Rampant (2018)
Tumblr media
If you’re interested in a period piece zombie film set in Korea but you don’t have the time to sit down and watch an entire season of Netflix’s The Kingdom, then Rampant is the movie for you. Movies about legions of undead terrorizing hapless citizens have been done countless times but this take offers something fresh.
Set during the Joseon dynasty, a plot to overthrow King Lee Jo (Kim Rui-Sung) accidentally releases a plague in a nearby village that turns people into highly contagious, flesh-eating 'night demons'. As their numbers grows, the crown prince Lee Chung (Hyun Bin) and his companion Hak-soo (Jeong Man-sik) must face this threat while schemers move ever closer to toppling the throne.
While many zombie films are made on the cheap, Rampant has a sizeable budget. The period setting is a nice way to mix things up visually and provides some spice to the formula. These zombies can be taken out with a blow to the head or heart and unlike most other stories, firearms are extremely rare. What does that mean? Swordsmen vs. zombies. That’s pretty cool. The excitement doesn't stop there. Escape is out of the question. Communication with the outside is nothing like what we have today. The infected are also given a couple of rules/weaknesses to keep your hopes up and things interesting. Movies of the zombie genre usually have a fairly standard plot and ultimately, it comes down to whether the conclusion is satisfying. Without giving too much away, this picture's is.
What sets Rampant apart is the stuff outside of the zombie apocalypse, however. To the backstabbing officials, this disaster is merely another opportunity. Even that’s not entirely novel. Many zombie stories reveal that humans are much worse than the flesh-eaters who rise from their graves. This won't even cross your mind while watching. You’ll just be concerned about whether Lee Chung will realize the real enemy is Ki Ja-joon (Jang Dong-gun) before it’s too late.
At 121 minutes, Rampant is too long. Some characters could’ve been combined to give their deaths (or survival) more meaning. The action scenes also tend to overstay their welcome. If you cut down zombies left and right it’s awesome at first but the more you cut down, the less of a threat they become.
Rampant offers a nice breath of fresh air while delivering what you want to see in a zombie movie. The ghouls are threatening, the swordplay and sieges keep you on edge and the political scheming bridges the gaps nicely - you may even find it more interesting than the monsters. It runs long and some of its time could’ve been better spent expanding on the characters. Though the sequel it wants to tell isn’t going to happen thanks to disappointing box-office results, Rampant still work as a standalone piece. (Original Korean with English subtitles, May 29, 2020)

The Advocate: A Missing Body    [trailer]
A lawyer and a prosecutor take on a murder case that has no evidence or a body.
While still a decent one, this easily could've turned into a much better, serious thriller. There were too many distracting elements for me. Like the introduction of the two dumb colleagues, or the sudden action chase sequence that felt out of place. They hindered the build-up of the tension.
I also would've very much preferred it, if the lead would've been a slightly less arrogant, sexist character.

A Gay Girl's Guide to Korean Musicals (with English subtitles!)
People often associate musicals with male gayness (both onstage and off) but there's stuff out there for female-oriented queers too! It's just harder to find, which is why I put this video together despite not knowing Korean.
This list isn't comprehensive and I deliberately chose musicals with either queer female characters or gender-free casting (i.e. female actors playing male roles), except for Bernarda Alba, which is special as it’s by far the largest-scale all-female production with 10 characters. Obviously there are many Korean musicals out there which don't meet these criteria and are still of interest to the queers, but I wanted to highlight these in particular as they are, apart from Rebecca, not as well-known. I highly recommend checking out @koreanmusicals for more information on Korean musicals generally!
Note: Again, I don’t understand Korean and relied heavily on machine translation and the original lyrics for licenced productions, so any errors in the subtitles or explanations are mine. Corrections are very welcome!

2022 kdrama/movie roundup!
It was a tough year for keeping up with anything because life, toddler, etc, but here are the things I watched, in part or whole, that I remembered. Hot Takes Incoming!
Sell Your Haunted House - Jang Nara in boots. Kang Mal-geum in dark lipstick. Touching, gay, many mother issues. The girls were fantastic. The boys weren't bad.
25 21 - I was dropped back into the 90s. Surprisingly, I didn't hate it. The girls were fantastic. Na Hee-do was correct to dump Baek Yi-jin. Moon Ji-woong, perfect boy. Ji Seung-wan for PRESIDENT!
Why Her? - Someone thought it'd be a great idea to throw Seo Hyun-jin's ex-client (shudder) current-student (TRIPLE SHUDDER) Hwang In-yeop into the romance mix when billionaire CHOI YOUNG-JOON and Crown Prince Bae In-hyuk were already there. And they thought it'd be funny if Hwang In-yeop won. NO.
Eve - The superior commentary this year on the horrors of capitalism. It ends with reparations (Park Byung-eun hands over his entire empire to Seo Yeji, who promptly divests it), rich people dying in horrible ways and Seo Yeji doing the tango. Were the makjang knobs dialled up so high they're broken? Yes. Was it fun? YES, because I got to see Park Byung-eun's range, which includes Pained Hottie, and Seo Yeji running men's feet over in cars wearing couture. We can ask for no more.
Juvenile Justice - No one asked "What happens if we take three of the most charismatic working actors in Korean entertainment today and squeezed the life out of them?" But someone answered anyway.
My Liberation Notes - Lee El, a revelation. Mr Gu, a revelation when he started talking, and not the good kind.
Grid - Kim Mu-yeol. Kim Ah-joong and Jang So-yeon had a great year. I didn't understand the time thing at all. This is a me problem, but probably the only time I'll face it this year. Right? RIGHT?
Bloody Heart - Jang Hyuk has done nothing wrong, ever. The girls were fantastic. Lee Joon, I heard your script was meant for Lee Joon-hyuk. Sorry.
Pachinko - The girls were fantastic. Kim Min-ha, baby, you're gorgeous. JUNG EUN-CHAE was everything. Sorry to Lee Min-ho, who had the tough double role of acting as Ko Hansu and also like he belonged to this cast of greats.
Our Blues - Great acting, but my own blues were sufficient for me. The girls were fantastic. Unwanted to wanted pregnancy storyline: no thanks. This is a me problem, but probably the only time I'll face it this year. Right? RIGHT?
Extraordinary Attorney Woo - 75% love; 25% NOT THIS AGAIN.
Little Women - The girls were fantastic. I ran out of air by this point in the year. I'll come back for you, gothic interior design, poison orchids, and Song Joong-ki in the best role he's played all year!
Through the Darkness - Almost too many twirling moustache psychos and dead girls. I did it for Kim Nam-gil because he's so pretty in this and in case it wasn't abundantly clear by now, I don't think with my brain. The lone living girl - Kim So-jin - was fantastic. Jin Seon-kyu, well-adjusted stealth hottie!
Reborn Rich - Samsung owes Lee Sung-min its entire semiconductor business as @rain-hat said. Lee Sung-min owes me reparations for making me watch this show for him primarily (secondarily Park Hyuk-kwon, Kim Shin-rok, Park Ji-hyun and Kim Nam-hee for their acting; Kim Young-jae because he is THE DILF). I'm manifesting NO TIMESLIPS in 2023 dramas.
Under the Queen's Umbrella - Kim Hye-soo pushing up her hanbok sleeves to carry babies and do embroidery should be projected onto my tombstone unto eternity. The girls were fantastic. And I know this is unusual, so bear with me, but: the boys? FANTASTIC ALSO.
Movies:
Vikram - Fahaadh Faasil, my thoughts are nasty and you don't want to hear them. The girls might have been fantastic had they been permitted to live and not be dumdums. That was never going to happen, of course. There was torture and a baby in significant peril, but it was also the most fun I'd had in a while. I should get my head checked.
Ponniyin Selvan - The sheer scale of work and sweat that has gone into the enterprise of making Vikram seem taller than Trisha Krishnan for the last twenty years! Iconic. The girls were fantastic.
The Naked Kitchen - This is sold as a story of a woman choosing between two men. That is a lie. It's about a man coming to terms with his marriage drifting into polyamory, and enjoying it. Shin Min-ah and Ju Ji-hoon fuck in a museum, which was also weirdly sweet.
Asura City of Madness - AHJUSSHIS WHY. Hwang Jung-min's shirttails worked very hard in 2012. Jung Woo-sung ate glass and has pathological issues about being as handsome as he is. We love him for it. We did not love this.
Hunt - Love is your bestie learning how to write and direct just to write and direct you in the role of a lifetime for you, personally. I don't know if that's what happened here, but that's what love is. And chemistry is whatever these two guys have in this completely ordinary movie that did not give any feelings. Hwang Jung-min, pussy OUT.
Decision to Leave - A well-deserved love letter to Tang Wei, just beautifully shot, gorgeous.
Il Mare - Absolutely lovely little film, reliant almost entirely on the star power of two actors who are so charismatic they don't need to meet in the movie to convince you of their romance.
Laal Singh Chaddha - There was a very beautiful wedding at the end. Aamir Khan's face must hurt.
Darlings - A movie that appreciated and respected noted hottie Shefali Shah.

'Catcher→Outfielder' position switch to improve Futures' home run king Jang's bat
Tumblr media
Kiwoom Heroes' Joo Sung-won, 24, is determined to make a splash this season. He has been working hard to improve his long-hitting power. Now, he wants to show his respect in the first team instead of the Futures League.
Joo Sung-won graduated from Gaesong High School and was drafted by the Burgundy with the 24th overall pick in the third round of the 2019 secondary draft. He was recognized as an offensive catcher with long power. Like most catchers, Joo gained experience mainly in the second team. Head coach Hong Won-ki said, "Joo Sung-won is a big catcher who is attracting attention. He has a bright future. He is the secret weapon of the Heroes," and expressed his expectations for his growth.
However, Joo Sung-won no longer wears a catcher's mask. He switched positions to take advantage of his hitting ability. He now plays as an outfielder. "I continued to play catcher after I left the military. It was difficult to utilize my batting, which is my strong point, while practicing defense. The team first suggested that I switch to the outfield," he said, revealing the reason for his switch to the outfield.
"Now I don't have any regrets about being a catcher. He was also attracted to the fact that he could revitalize the team's atmosphere when he blocked a long hit with his catcher's helmet, and he could press the opponent's spirit. "Outfielders are very active. It's fun to run around the field and practice defense. Outfielders can also block long balls with their defense. I like that I can make spectacular plays. I don't have any regrets about being a catcher now."
Joo's bat has the potential to improve enough to switch positions. He won the home run award in the Futures League North in 2022. If he can play in the first team, the Heroes' thirst for big guns could be quenched. "Since I was a rookie, my strength has improved through systematic training. I had to train harder because I can't make a long hit with just my strength, but I had good training, so it paid off in the long hit department," he said.
Last year, he experienced the thrill of making his first-team debut. He couldn't contain his excitement when he heard the fans screaming in the Gocheok Sky Dome. The experience motivated him to get better at baseball. "I played in the first team for the first time last year. It was more fun to play baseball. I think the stage where I can do well is on the field where the fans support me. The fans' support motivates me," he said, adding that he hopes to play for a long time in the first team this year.
Kiwoom also has high hopes for Joo Sung-won. Joo prepared for the season at the first team's spring camp in Arizona, USA this year. He trained with his role model Kim Hye-sung and learned from her. He also learned how she approaches baseball.
"My role model is Hye-sung," Joo said. He is an exemplary player and a hard worker that everyone 토토 recognizes. I learned that I have to work hard like him to love baseball and be good at it. I asked him a lot and learned a lot. Talking about baseball together changed my perspective and mindset. Hye-sung praised him a lot, saying that he was doing a good job. His words gave me a lot of encouragement."
In spring camp, he worked hard to develop his long-hitting power and improve his defense. All in order to survive in the first team. "I need to get better at baseball to be noticed during the season," says Joo. During camp, I focused on what I can do well and trained.
