3. rant. just do it

uhh so it’s been 5 months since i joined my current lab and i’ve felt huge amounts of imposter syndrome since day one? (it literally took me like 4 of those months to actually have a proper conversation with my PI since i mostly talk to my grad student. also my PI intimidates me even though people say she’s really nice.) i barely know any coding and computational neuro still - i’ve only just started to figure out MATLAB and Psychtoolbox even though i told myself to learn it asap. also i can’t help but feel like my grad student is doing a lot of handholding and is essentially my research babysitter bc i don’t know enough to do stuff on my own!! tomorrow is our summer research symposium and i don’t think i can properly explain everything in our study. heck, i’ve even forgotten basic brain anatomy, which makes me feel stupid when my grad student asks me questions about it. i’m a neuro major and i don’t know basic brain facts!! 

i wonder if i’ll ever stop feeling this way, because already this imposter syndrome has prevented me from asking for money over the summer (a BIG L), and it’s definitely preventing me from talking to my PI about doing a thesis. don’t get me wrong, i don’t hate being in this lab - people are super nice and the work i’m doing is super interesting!! but i’m getting tired. 

also i’m supposed to be studying for the mcat but i’m so behind. i don’t know anything and i’m fucked!! but i don’t have the energy to study when i get home!!

Hi Cordelia! Congrats on the pre-order for your new series - I'm super excited for them and you can bet that I'm counting down the days for their release. I was at work today and mindlessly going through a bunch of file names, and I came across someone with the last name Davenport, which threw me back to Ashton from Close Protection! It was a fun little moment for me and reminded me to put that on my reading list again, but it did cause me to wonder: how do you come up with your character names?

My two go-to name websites are Behind the Name and it surname version. Naming characters is something I take very seriously, so it’s not unusual for me to spend a half-hour or more trolling around name websites looking for one that hits the sweet spot. The way the name sounds has to resonate with the character’s appearance and personality for me to use it.

On the flip side, when naming throwaway minor characters with little importance, I often just take random names from anything near me. For example, if I have a magazine on my desk, I’ll take a first name from one article and smush it together with a surname from another article.
