ironhusbands prompt: rhodey and tony are at a carnival, rhodey is determined to win tony one of the giant stuffed animals they have as prizes
Here’s the thing about Rhodey: he’s not usually competitive. Usually. He knows he’s good, and he knows that he doesn’t exactly have to win everything to be considered a great guy or a “challenge” to the opposing team. His chess strategies can account for that exactly. (He loses every single round but a different time. Chess Club respects him.)
But this is different. Totally different.
He’s dating Tony Stark. Which is quite a big deal, even if he’s been acting like it isn’t for the last week in public.
Not in public? Whole other story. He called his little sister and asked if yellow was an obnoxious color.
He could practically feel Jeanette’s eyes judging from across the phone line.
“You’re serious? You’re asking about yellow?”
“Well you know, sometimes it’s too bright and shit, so--”
“If this is about your stupid fucking yellow polo shirt, I thought I told you to burn that. Tony will hate you forever if you wear it.”
“Oh. Okay. Thanks Jeanie. Love you.”
“I mildly tolerate you.”
“You’re lying.”
“I know.”
(In reality, Tony would not have hated Rhodey in yellow. He just would come to sigh every single time Rhodey put on a polo shirt. Jeannette, in her own opinion, saved their relationship from the get-go.)
A carnival is a big deal for Tony. Tony is what Rhodey likes to affectionately call, “a freak.”
He’d never had a hot dog until he came to the college dining center. He is very excited to try “normal” things.
And Rhodey noticed that his eyes lit up when they watched an old movie and in the background there was a couple and the boyfriend won the biggest teddy bear there for his sweetheart.
Rhodey wants to do that for him.
The only problem?
Rhodey isn’t exactly sure if he can win a game. Sure he’s practiced his aim and yeah, he’s been pretty solid at ring tosses at his school carnivals, but this is the big-time. It also costs money, and Rhodey has about twenty dollars in his wallet and he is absolutely not taking more than that for a stuffed animal.
But Tony? Tony’s excited. It’s all he’s talking about for the last week, which is very cute.
“Rhodey’s taking me to the carnival,” he says, grinning. “Isn’t that cool?”
“For the eighth time, yes it is very cool,” Bruce deadpans. “Now please don’t talk to me about it I’m having flashbacks to my sophomore year of high school and the production of Grease. I think I deserve some kind of refund for that trauma.”
“You guys performed that? How was it?”
“I literally just told you.”
“I bet it was fun,” Tony says, humming the rest of “Beauty School Dropout” as he finishes up the calculations to the assignment. “Can I tell you something, Bruce?”
“Yes. Please tell me it’s about Mothman.”
“No. It’s about Rhodey.”
“Is he hiding a dark secret? Is he actually a government plant so that you don’t get too crazy and out of control?”
“What? No. They wouldn’t send someone as amazing as him. I just really want a carnival prize.”
“Oh. Okay.”
Bruce knows this is a problem. Carnival games are rigged. Luckily, he knows someone who is currently working there because he either a.) is paying off a debt he owes someone, or b.) potentially undercover for a secret agency.
-
He just calls him Clint. He’s not as badass as Bruce just made him sound.
“Hey, I need a favor from you. I need you to work whichever stand Tony and Rhodey come up to.”
“And why should I do this for you?”
“I will buy you that really shitty pizza you like.”
“Oh, you mean the most decadent pizza you’ll ever have?”
“I mean it’d be decadent if you were in the Great Depression, but sure. Yeah.”
“Okay. I still would’ve done it even if it wasn’t a favor.”
“You absolute--”
“By Bruce say hi to Thor for me!”
Rhodey doesn’t know about Clint. But the plan is in motion.
They end up at a stall that involves a sharpshooting game. Clint’s not sure how to rig it against the other rigging, but he figures he’ll wing it. Tony is very excited about potentially winning a five foot tall stuffed animal of a dog. It looks quite cute.
Rhodey is very nervous, but Tony smiles at him.
“Hey, it’s okay. Just a game.”
“Right,” Rhodey says, trying not to think about how he had a nightmare that Tony ditched him for the stupid frat guy who sits ahead of them in chemistry. “Just a game.”
Tony comes back with a giant stuffed dog that barely fits in their tiny dorm, but he peppers Rhodey with kisses.
“Best date ever, honey. Thank you. I know you’ve been to a million, but it’s...it’s really nice that you did this for me. And you got Clint to rig it!”
“...who’s Clint?”
“We’ll ask Bruce later,” Tony says, pulling Rhodey close. “Don’t worry about it. For now, I would like to thank my strong boyfriend for winning me the best thing ever. I’ve named him Marmalade Blackberry the Fourth.”
“Wait...Clint rigged it? How? Why?” Rhodey looks very confused, and Tony honestly doesn’t want to talk about it now. He had to carry the dog home on the bus back to campus and had to be cute all day. Quite exhausting.
“Go to bed, darling. We’ll talk about it in the morning,” he says, kissing Rhodey on the cheek. “Let’s get ready for bed. Remember to use your new facial cleanser!”
Rhodey kisses him on the cheek back, grinning.
“Love you.”
“Love you too,” Tony says with finality, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. (Rhodey loves that.)
Tony tries to bring Marmalade the Dog into their beds. Rhodey has to politely but firmly say no.

Five incredible memoirs to add to your tbr
These books have thought me more about life and human relationships than anything else, they are of universal importance.
- Trigger Warning (Themes of sexual and psychological abuse)
1. Instrumental by James Rhodes
Tumblr media
In this thought provoking and eye opening story James Rhodes, now a famous concert pianist, reflects on the sexual abuse he had to endure as a child and how classical music safed him from his severe depression and drug addiction. A must read if you want to understand the harsh reality and consequences of sexual abuse, but also a touching manifestation about the powers and meaning of classical music. "This is a memoir like no other: unapologetically candid, boldly outspoken and surprisingly funny".
2. The last expedition by Robert Scott
Tumblr media
"In November 1910, a ship called Terra Nova left New Zealand on its way south to Antarctica. On board was an international team of explorers led by Robert Falcon Scott, a man determined to be the first to reach the South Pole. A year and a half later, Scott and three members of his team died during a brutal blizzard.Even in his final hours, Scott found the strength to continue the journal he'd started at the beginning of his adventures; the diary was found beside his frozen body."
3. The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
Tumblr media
A heartwrenching memoir about the troubles writer Jeanette Walls had to face growing up with an alcohol-dependent father: "When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family." 4. The blinding abscence of light by Tahar Ben Jelloun
Tumblr media
This technically isn't a memoir but I included it because it was highly based on real life events: "Ben Jelloun reveals the horrific story of the desert concentration camps in which King Hassan II of Morocco held his political enemies in underground cells with no light and only enough food and water to keep them lingering on the edge of death. He delivers a shocking novel that explores both the limitlessness of inhumanity and the impossible endurance of the human will."
5. In the dream house by Carmen Maria Machado
Tumblr media
"In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado's engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing experience with a charismatic but volatile woman, this is a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse."

Women conductors you should know
Today, March 31st, is the last day of Women’s History Month in the USA. With that in mind, here are some women conductors. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list, nor does inclusion here constitute an endorsement of the conductor’s work. The point that I’m trying to make is that women in this field are no longer the jaw-dropping novelty that many in the non-music press would have you believe. They aren't really a new phenomenon.
I’ve given each conductor’s country of birth; this isn’t necessarily where she ended up, and please note that some were born long enough in the past, in parts of the world that have seen great political tumult, that their native countries no longer exist.

Here We Are, Born to be Kings - AUgust Day 9
Title: Here We Are, Born to be Kings
Author: Purple_ducky00
Rating: Teen
Warnings: N/A
Pairing: Rhodey/Tony
Square Filled: G2 Dramatic Proposal
Link: Read on AO3
Summary:  Prince James is in love with Lord Tony Stark, a childhood friend. However, the Starks have been disgraced due to embezzlement charges. Can they overcome this?
++++++++++
“Your Highness. Lord Stark is here to see you.” Quentin Beck holds up his nose.
Prince James Rhodes rolls his eyes. It’s not like Beck should judge. He was only hired because his family was in serious debt.  Tony is working out of his.
Tony walks in a few minutes later, hair askew. “Wow, Rhodey, your servants hate me. I call it an achievement.”
“They just think it’s ok to judge since their scandals happened long ago enough for people to forget. You don’t deserve this.”
“I probably do.” Tony shrugs. “It doesn’t bother me. Actually, it gives me the chance to ditch my politeness because they already dislike me.”
“Oh for that luxury,” Rhodey sighs. He hates the protocol he must go through. Maybe that’s why he finds Tony so refreshing.
They first met at a football match. Tony was on the other team, and he told the young prince, “We’re not playing any easier because you’re the prince. So, be ready for that.”
Rhodey laughed and started playing. Tony’s team was clearly better, and they defeated Rhodey's team easily. After the game, Tony invited him to grab some lunch. They have been fast friends ever since.
Now, Rhodey is 22 and Tony is 21. Tony’s father died last year, and Tony inherited his estate. After going over the numbers, Tony’s godfather, Obadiah Stane informed him that Howard had been falsifying records and was basically bankrupt.
Dazed and reeling from his parents' sudden death, Tony doesn’t know what to do with this information. He reaches out for help, but as Howard had been stealing money from his peers, everyone refuses to help him. Rhodey offers to bail him out completely. Tony won’t let him. He decides he will work to pay off his father's debts.
Tony was always incredibly smart. His patented inventions were used worldwide. He decides to start his own company, Stark Enterprises, where he builds and sells hi-tech machinery and entertainment devices. As his company quickly grows, he branches out into clean energy and satellites. Not even a full year after starting his company, Tony is very successful. With only Stane and his PA, Pepper Potts, at his right hand, Tony makes sure that he himself takes care of the books. Every entry is painstakingly entered and checked by the big boss himself.
Rhodey is very proud of his friend, but it seems that his family is the only one in the kingdom that is. King Terrance and Queen Roberta love the young man as a son, but they often wonder if he is taking on too much, causing his sleepless nights and unhealthy eating habits. Tony waves them off saying he had had those problems before his parents had died.
Prince James’ PR agent tells him that finding someone to date might be a good look for him. Everyone is looking for news of the royal family, and they will only assume the worst if they don’t hear from each member. Queen Roberta’s cooking classes and bingo games are televised. The king does a podcast twice a month. Jeannie plays tennis professionally. James is the only one without a big public profile, and he prefers that. However, there are some people who think that James is being pushed out of the spotlight or being abused in some kind. To quell any quickly rising rumors, Rhodey agrees to attend sports matches and talk to the press for a few minutes each time. When Tony’s not working his ass off, he often accompanies Tony.
What Rhodey doesn’t tell his PR agent is the reason he doesn’t date. He is hopelessly in love with Tony and admitting that would be bad for a few reasons. 1.) Everyone in the country is against Tony. They would slander his name even more if they thought he had got his “money-grubbing claws” in the prince. 2.) Tony is straight. He had never told Rhodey otherwise, and he has only dated women as far as Rhodey knows. 3.) He doesn’t want any reason to make Tony uncomfortable in the only place he is welcome other than his home. So, he skirts the topic because fake dating is not his idea of fun.
Now, Tony’s here and Rhodey knows he’s giving Tony heart eyes. “So, you’ve got a day off from me. What’s the plan, Rhodey?”
“You pick today. I’m up for anything.” Rhodey trusts that Tony won’t do anything Rhodey can’t.
Tony sits on the chair beside Rhodey. “I need to sit. I don’t think I’ve stopped moving for a week.”
“So, what you’re saying is you need sleep.” Rhodey retorts.
“No, I need to spend time with my Rhodeybear. We never did that Star Wars marathon after Rise of Skywalker came out, did we?” Tony pokes him. “We can order like tons of pizza and greasy foods and bro it out like the old times.”
Stuck in a theatre room with only Tony and highly unhealthy food? “Sounds like a great day. Let’s queue up the movies. I’ll have |Miss Cabe order our food. The usual?” Tony nods and heads off to the theater.
Rhodey pulls out his phone and texts a maid, Bethany Cabe, to place an order for the following: an extra-large bacon pizza, two orders of cheesy curly fries, mozzarella sticks, and onion rings. Rhodey has cases of Tony’s favorite beer, so they did not need to worry about drinks.
As they settle in to watch the movies, Tony tells him, “Wake me up if I fall asleep. I don’t want to miss Episode Six again.”
“Come on Tones, Return of the Jedi isn’t the best.” Rhodey smirks.
Tony glares at him. “It’s my favorite. Leave me alone. Go ahead and like Empire or whatever one you like the best. Geez.”
“You know mine is Episode Three. The tragedy, the pain, the John Williams’ scores? A masterpiece.”
“Anakin deserved better.” Tony mumbles as he eats a bite of pizza. Rhodey sighs. He’s heard this rant many times, and he’ll probably hear it again tonight. Tony really gets into these movies.
Tony falls asleep at the end of A New Hope, his head falling on Rhodey’s shoulder. He looks so exhausted so Rhodey lets him sleep through Empire since Tony thinks it’s overhyped or something. Rhodey likes it. When Return of the Jedi starts, Rhodey nudges Tony awake. “Episode 6? Honeybear, you are an angel.” Tony kisses his cheek.
By the time The Last Jedi comes on, both of the men are sleeping. Jeannette comes in to check on them and snaps a picture of Tony lying on top of Rhodey, both snoring away.
Rhodey wakes up a few hours later and freezes. Tony is sleeping peacefully on him, his head on Rhodey’s chest. He doesn’t dare move in fear of waking Tony up. He slowly reaches for his phone and scrolls through Instagram and other social media apps until Tony wakes up.
Tony wakes up slowly, but when he’s fully awake he jumps up and goes. “I’ve got to get to work!”
“Hey Tony. It’s Sunday. We were going to spend Saturday and Sunday together, right?”
“Oh. Oh. Whew. I thought.” Tony slumps. “Probably hallucinating from all that grease.”
“Maybe we should get a little more sleep in a real bed.” Rhodey suggests. Tony nods, and they walk up to Rhodey’s room. Since they were kids, Tony always slept in Rhodey’s bed with him. They only ever slept and/or cuddled, and Rhodey has a king bed in case either of them needed their own space.
They go to Jeannie’s tennis match then accompany her to an expensive Italian restaurant for dinner. The next morning, there are pictures splashed across the tabloids. Stark trying to get in with the Royal Family? Read more on page 3! One says. The Apple Doesn’t Fall far from the Tree – Another Gold-Digging Stark! Rhodey shakes his head. He was afraid this would happen. He calls his PR agent, Maria Hill.
She answers with a “Now do you see why having a partner would be good?”
“Yes. Do you have any candidates who would be willing to date with no sex and/or strings attached? For public only?”
“You don’t know how many celebrities only hope for that. Let me see which ones I can get. I’ll send you over a packet when I get them.”
When he gets the packet, Rhodey isn’t surprised to find that 75% of them are women. Skipping through them, he tells Maria to reach out to an A-list actress Natasha Romanov. She is a beautiful woman, and they seem to have a lot of the same likes and dislikes. She agrees to meet with Rhodey at a small café near the palace. He introduces himself as Rhodey, then corrects it to “James or Jim” when Romanov gives him an odd look. “I’m sorry. My best friend always calls me Rhodey. It’s just what I expect now. I mean, if you want to call me that in private, it’s fine. Maria thinks it’s better if you call me James or Jim when talking with the press.”
“Tell me about this best friend.” Natasha leans forward. “He sounds like a nice guy.”
Rhodey launches into a detailed description of Tony: his strengths, his flaws, his quirks, etc.  When he’s done, she asks, “And you’re dating me because you can’t date him?”
 “How did you…?”
“You’re in love with him. Just look at your face. It’s ok. I won’t tell the press. I have almost the same problem. I’m in a poly relationship with a different celebrity couple. However, since Hollywood, even with its sex scandals, still looks down on poly relationships. I need a beard to keep our activity on the downlow. Is that acceptable for you?”
Rhodey nods. “Of course. And you’re right. I love Tony, but I need to keep the press out of his life. His father put him through a lot, and he’s trying to make up for Howard’s sins. He doesn’t need the extra press coverage. Also, I don’t know if he likes me like that. I’ve never seen him date a guy.”
“Well, I’d like to meet him.”
+++++++ Natasha and Tony eventually meet. Tony is happy to meet her, but Rhodey feels that Tony is wearing one of his many masks. |When they kiss goodnight, Natasha tells him, “Rhodey, he likes you.”
“Not that I want to doubt you, but I’m highly doubtful on this one here.”
A few months pass, and Natasha and Prince James are photographed at red carpet events, at sports games, and at galas. Rumors are spreading that Prince James might propose soon. Natasha shows up at the palace for a surprise visit. “Hey, can we talk?” She pulls James from his family dinner.
She tells him how the couple that she is dating are planning on coming out to the press as poly with her because they know some younger people who are receiving hate for their relationships. They want to be allies for such people. And they want her there when they come out. “Can we say we amicably split? I’d love to keep in contact with you.”
“That sounds good.” His phone pings. He has a google alert set up for Tony because the press likes to come up to him for hostile interviews at the most inopportune times. James does his best to save him. “Listen Nat, I will talk to my publicist, but I have to go.”
The press has trapped Tony on the palace driveway. “What do you think of Prince James marrying Ms. Romanov?” One reporter asks.
“I didn’t know they got engaged, but I think they are an excellent match. Well-suited for each other.” Rhodey can see Tony is keeping his press face on but was not ready for the sudden press conference.
Another reporter sneers. “We know you were trying to get a piece of the royalty. Will you try for the princess now that the prince is spoken for?”
“Excuse me?” Tony reels. “What are you talking about?”
“They’ll never have you. You’re just a charity case to them. What do you think of that? Did you think Prince James really liked you? Especially after what your father did?” Another reporter shoves a microphone in his face.
Tony loses his mask. “Do I think Rho- Prince James really liked me? I have known the prince since we were young teenagers. I know he likes me… as a friend. But anything more? No. He never did, never will. I know what my father did; I know what I have to do to fix it. My father and Prince James have no correlation. What are you even trying to say here?” Rhodey can see the pain in Tony’s eyes. They flash when he says that Rhodey will never like him as anything more as a friend.
“Excuse me.” Rhodey steps forward. “Can you step away from him, please?”
The press apologizes and steps away. “Now, I want to say this once more and hopefully never again. Lord Stark is not his father. Lord Stark is paying his father’s investors back as quickly as he can. He started up his business on his own with his trust fund from his maternal grandmother. Howard never saw or added to a penny of that fund. What is the point of hating a man for the sins of his father? Keep rolling. I am talking to the country as a whole. Leave him alone, please. I want to say one more thing. Tony Stark, you are the love of my life. The reason I have not dated is because the only person I have ever loved was you. Yes, Natasha and I dated, but we did to keep other things hidden. I’m sure she will let you know at some point. It’s not my job. Tony, again, I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you and perhaps rule with you. I do not have a ring yet because I had not planned to propose to you in front of live TV today, yet here I am. Will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?”
 “You’re serious?” Tony gasps.
 “Completely.”
“Then Rhodey, my Honeybear, my Platypus, my Sourpatch, I will marry you in a heartbeat.” Tony smiles widely, and Rhodey kisses him deeply, in front of the cameras. As they turn to the palace, Tony turns back to the cameras, lifts his middle finger, and says, “Fuck you” whilst smiling sweetly.
++++++ The country is so shocked at Prince James’ dramatic proposal. People wonder if Tony is a good fit for the prince due to his blatant disregard for protocol. Princess Jeannie posts the picture she took of them sleeping in the theatre room on Instagram, the caption “I knew it.” She broke the internet with the most likes on an Instagram post.
Tony goes through his numbers and his father’s numbers again to make sure everyone is paid off. While looking at his father’s records again, he notices some discrepancies from Obadiah’s report. The truth comes out – Howard had not done anything wrong; it was Obadiah. He falsified documents, records, and even bills to give him much more money. Obadiah is fired and imprisoned. Tony’s name is cleared. Anthony Stark marries Prince James Rhodes a happy man.

 Peggy Day, 86
Tumblr media
Mrs. Peggy Creasman Day, age 86 of North Wilkesboro passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at Wilkes Sr. Village, on what would have been her and Frank's 64th wedding anniversary.  Peggy has relocated yet once again, this time to her eternal home in heaven to be with her Lord and her childhood sweetheart.
Funeral Services were February 22, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Dr. Bert Young and Dr. Dean Simpson officiating.  Entombment was in Scenic Memorials Gardens Mausoleum.
Mrs. Day was born April 8, 1933 in Davidson County to Roy L and Pauline Kindley Creasman. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was in the Euzelian Sunday School class.
When Peggy was a teenager she worked for Belk's and Penny's on holidays and weekends.  She graduated from North Wilkesboro High School in 1952 and attended Woman's College in Greensboro (now U.N.C Greensboro) and worked as a secretary in North Wilkesboro at Wilkes Auto Sales from 1953 until 1955 and she also worked at Modern Globe.
Having met while sledding in the eighth grade, Frank and Peggy quickly became an item; they were inseparable for nearly 60 years. She married the love of her life, Frank Day, in 1956. Peggy did everything with Frank, until he predeceased her nearly a decade ago.  After she married Frank she became a mother and homemaker. Then she went back to work at Nancy King Textiles.
Nearly thirty years ago, Frank and Peggy Day took the empty Rose's building, once the retail hub of the Wilkesboro's, and turned it into a Victorian themed mini-mall. It was their hangout and a retirement passion after many decades of manufacturing. The Melody Square Mall became an active second hub of the downtown from its inception.
In the wake of Frank's death, Peggy kept the Mall and her retail store going for many years. For her, the mall and the store were so much more than just a business. Frank and Peggy helped dozens of businesses get their start inside this Victorian village. Most of these new business owners, and their regular customer, became like family to them.
Likewise, they also enjoyed seeing friends and acquaintances drop in.  It was like the venerable country store where folks came for more than merely shopping and eating.  Many pulled up on a bench to talk, or just sit and watch people go by. Others used the pleasant space to walk laps around the corridors. The mall has changed hands. And now, Peggy has moved on to sled once again with the love of her life.
She loved the Lord, her church and her family with all her heart. She loved and was loved by many friends.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband; Frank G. Day.
She is survived by a daughter; Melody Lynn Rasmussen and husband Gerald of Wilmington, NC and a son; Tim Day and wife Diana of Marietta, GA, four grandchildren; Davis Day, Cameron Day and wife Emily, Alexander Lee Rasmussen and wife Shaina, Nicholas Paul Rasmussen and three step-grandchildren; Joanna Toso, Grace Toso and Jared Toso.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Helping Hands Ministries, POB 5037 Statesville NC, 28687, or http://www.hhmworldmissions.com/ or to Samartians Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.

Hmm Im just drinking some Respect Rhodey Juice tonight and was wondering if you would write smth about his journey/struggles of life and ppl who doubt him (and then eat their words when he looks fabulous and kicks ass)
A lot of people know Tony Stark’s story. They know that he considers Rhodey to be the best person in the world. He was in ROTC training, Tony made fun of him, but they ended up bonding over engineering and some inside joke at MIT.
They don’t know the whole story.
So here it is.
Rhodey grew up in a relatively nice household in Philadelphia. He still considers some aspect of that to be home, no matter if he hasn’t lived there since high school.
He remembers his dad’s low humming on Sunday mornings when he was a kid, the way he smiled at him.
“Hey Jimmy,” he would say quietly. “Wanna surprise mama with breakfast?”
Mama acted surprised every single time, even if every Sunday she got breakfast on a tray. Rhodey would grin brightly up at his mother and clamber into her bed to steal the “extra” piece of bacon.
(His dad cooked three slices, and saved one for his son.)
He remembers that his sister Jeannette was born when he was four years old, and he did not appreciate having a sister.
“You have to be a good role model for her, sugar,” Mama had told him. She was tired from the hospital, and had handed Jeannette to Dad. “She needs a good big brother.”
Rhodey doesn’t get why his mom is so insistent on that, having a good big brother. It isn’t until he’s eight and Mama’s own older brother comes asking for a car or some money for his new business that he understands that Mama had a very different sort of life. One that they don’t talk about.
So he grabs his dollar and walks his sister to the corner store and gets her a popsicle that dribbles down her chin. She got watermelon flavor.
“Thanks Jim,” Jeannette says, grinning. “You’re the best!”
He vows to always be the best for her.
Always.
Including an academic example. He scores excellently on his tests, enough to catch the notice of the private education institution. They send a nice lady to talk to Mama and Dad about the possibility of him learning there instead of his regular school.
They agree. Rhodey doesn’t exactly want to go, but gets that this is an opportunity.
The school is nearly all-white. That’s...weird. They look at him differently, ask weird questions. He keeps his head down, focuses on studying. He doesn’t realize it yet, but these people have never had to worry about their race.
He’s still a good student. He’s in the top ten, and people whisper and say that it’s because he’s black.
He stares them down and asks if they have a problem with the color of skin he has.
They stammer out a no, but he knows. He knows that they think that he’s gotten all sorts of advantages, and some will never believe that his success is merit-based. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, and he comes home angry.
“Be better,” Mama tells him, smoothing her hand over his face. “You know you’re better than what they always say. You just gotta keep going.”
-
It’s around this time that they go to the Franklin Institute.
And it’s there that he gets introduced into flight travel and falls in love.
He wants to know how planes work. He wants to know why they use some materials but not others, how it works.
“You could go into the Air Force,” his dad chuckles one night.
“Are you gonna be a pilot?” Jeannette asks, looking up from her toys. “You’d be a good pilot.”
“Maybe,” he tells them. “Maybe.”
The military is his best bet.
Come high school, he starts training immediately. He’s a good kid, all things considered. He follows orders well, is intuitive to what comes next, and his officer lets other officials know that this kid will be a good guy.
Assuming, of course, that they let Rhodey into a position of power. He wants to be a good pilot, he wants to have a good job that’s kind of safe.
He also needs to figure out college. He knows he needs a college degree, needs something to show that he is who he says he is.
Rhodey gets a full ride to MIT. His dad sighs and looks at him.
“Son, I need to talk to you...”
“I know I can do this,” Rhodey says determinedly. “I know that I can do a college education, I know I can prove others wrong, and--”
“I know that,” his father says. “But really...Boston?”
His mother laughs for a long while, and makes her husband promise to visit their son, even if they do have to voluntarily go to Boston.
When they move him in, they’re greeted with one Tony Stark chasing after a robot who has grabbed a broom and is wreaking havoc in the apartment.
“Hi,” Tony heaves. “Sorry to be meeting you all like this, I sincerely did mean to be presentable. I’m Tony Stark, nice to meet you.”
His parents are scared of Tony, all things considered. He’s a kid with too much influence on the world. If he says one wrong thing...Rhodey’s finished.
Rhodey holds no such fear because Tony is standing in mismatched socks and chasing after a robot.
When his parents leave and his teenage sister actually gives him a hug, he’s left in the room.
“You want pizza?” Tony asks, blinking. “I’m ordering a pizza.”
They sit together and eat pizza that has too much grease on it, and Tony asks all about Philadelphia. He’s never traveled there, and wants to know if people really do run up the stairs like in the movie Rocky.
Rhodey answers yes, unfortunately, a lot of tourists do that.  Tony laughs.
He talks about New York, everything that people get wrong or right about it.
Then they decide to compare class schedules, and it turns out they have a lot of the same classes.
Rhodey likes being friends with Tony. He’s an easy guy to fall into friendship with. He’s not expecting anything from him, just that he likes some food and tells Tony to knock it off if he’s being annoying.
ROTC training is still going well. Tony makes fun of the uniform and teases him, but also helps make sure his pants are ironed in time.
“I swear to god if I told anyone you were an Iron-kinda-Man, they wouldn’t believe me,” Rhodey teases him. “Thanks.”
He presses a kiss to Tony’s forehead before he rushes out.
-
The Air Force loves him. He’s in aerodynamic engineering, getting the best grades in the class, and has proven time and time again to be a natural-born leader. His very presence commands attention, and the guys around him respect him quite well.
He’s offered a position after graduation to become a pilot.
He’s flying high.
-
His parents, of course, are proud. They host a party with all their friends and family, and Rhodey truly feels like this is it.
Of course, it’s not easy. Nothing ever is. He has to command men and women, go against what others say. He was one of the first in his unit to advocate for women to be part of the team.
“They’re too emotional,” Kennick had remarked.
“And just who nearly cried because their football team didn’t make it to the Superbowl?” Rhodey asks him. “Because it sure as hell wasn’t your wife or daughter, Kennick.”
The rest of the team howls in laughter, and Rhodey smiles to himself.
Tony is still his best friend. They call each other often, although Tony is busier with the company now. Rhodey acts as a sort of liaison for the negotiations between SI and the military.
Tony sends him care packages that host a wild variety of things, ranging from quite the bottle of Scotch to four different McDonald’s Happy Meal Toys.
“Why the toys?”
“Kids keep leaving them in the SI building after their school tour. I have to do something with them.”
(Rhodey takes pictures of them around the base and nearly compromises a secret mission.
It’s worth it.)
But Rhodey’s life is good. It has its ups and downs, but he got what he wanted. And when he sees the other kids from his school who looked at him weird, the teachers who told him to “aim a bit lower” than his goals, he smiles.
He especially likes to smile to himself when he wakes up next to Tony, who smiles at him like he has all the stars in the world.
