your fics are so good! I love the chemistry between klonnie. What scenes in canon would you rewrite to feature more Klonnie?

Ah, thank you so much! I try. ☺️ Klonnie will always have my heart mainly because it pairs one of my two favorite and most powerful characters in the TVDU.

There are so many opportunities in the show to naturally build up Klonnie, and it would still make sense, especially if it is a slow burn, which would be the best course for Klonnie, in my opinion. Also, E2L is my favorite trope if you've read my collection of one-shots and other works. But it fit and would also work for them in the show since they can stand up to the other given their power.

But going for specific scenes and rewriting them for Klonnie comes to mind. This will be a long post, and I will make separate posts to focus on other seasons too so this answer will focus on season 2 only. Thanks, anon, for giving me this creative brain boost because I am going down a rabbit hole. Will I write it? Chances are small, but never say never. But I love sharing my what-ifs on here to at least get them out of my mind.

Season 2: Klonnie are enemies, plain and simple. They're out to kill each other. Bonnie to protect her friends, and Klaus to become the Original Hybrid and for power.

I would mainly focus on the last few episodes in this season. But Bonnie is secluded from the others because she has to fake her death from Klaus. I've given my opinion and feelings about having her off-screen so much just to save the day by beating the big bad. However, it does allow me to take liberties by setting the tone for Klonnie, which would pay off later in the later seasons. Also, I am still trying to keep the overall plot the same.

Season 2, Episode 17 - "Know Thy Enemy":

• Damon leads Bonnie and Jeremy to the Witch's House, where Bonnie harnesses the power of dead witches (first use of Spirit magic).

• Bonnie feels the deaths of the witches and realizes she must be careful as her body isn't strong enough to channel so much power. She keeps this secret from everyone except Jeremy.

• The goal is for Bonnie to have enough power to deal with Klaus, as per Elijah's plan.

• Klaus, working through Isobel, sets his plans in motion with his witch Maddox.

• Klonnie element: While they don't interact directly, this sets the moment when they prepare for an eventual confrontation, setting the stage for future encounters.

Season 2, Episode 18 - "The Last Dance":

• Alaric!Klaus gathers information through a compelled Katherine, learning the group believes Bonnie has lost her powers.

• Klaus decides to do personal reconnaissance as Alaric to observe his doppelgänger and verify Bonnie's power status.

• Bonnie expresses confidence in her ability to take down anyone, including an Original.

• Key Klonnie moment: When Bonnie confidently states she can take down anyone, Alaric!Klaus briefly shows interest and doubt about her power and self-assurance. He is both intrigued, but mostly wants her gone since she is the thing that can ruin his plans.

• Alaric!Klaus consults with Maddox about killing Bonnie, learning that channeling too much power will kill her.

• At the dance, Alaric!Klaus observes Bonnie and lures her into a confrontation.

• The cafeteria showdown: Bonnie is ruthless with her attacks on Alaric!Klaus.

• Klonnie element: During their battle, Klaus (in Alaric's body) shows a flicker of interest in Bonnie's power. He mentions the "new order," he planned for 1000 years hinting at a potential alliance if circumstances were different. Klaus internally acknowledges that in different circumstances, he might have tried to recruit Bonnie to his side.

• This encounter plants a seed for future interactions while maintaining their current enemy status.

Season 2, Episode 19 - "Klaus":

• Bonnie, while in hiding, learns about Klaus's history with her own research through her ancestors.

• Bonnie sees unconnected visions of Klaus's past, including his human life, first turning, and transformation into the notorious monster he's become.

• Through it, Bonnie discovers the truth about the Sun and Moon Curse being the actual Hybrid Curse and thinks it’s best to focus on weakening Klaus by eliminating his witch, Maddox.

• She plots with Damon to deal with Maddox at the right moment to prevent Klaus from finding a replacement in time.

• Klaus appears in his original body.

• Klonnie element: Bonnie's growing curiosity about Klaus's past and the "new order" he mentioned, she is looking for a way to weaken him and protect her friends.

Season 2, Episode 21 - "The Sun Also Rises":

• Jeremy and Bonnie search for a resuscitation spell to save Elena from becoming a vampire.

• The ritual started. Bonnie offers to perform a locator spell to find Klaus, using Elijah's blood.

•Building up Klonnie through a conversation with Elijah:

- While performing the spell, Bonnie questions Elijah about vampire nature and morality.

- She asks how vampires, can lose their humanity after living so long, they started as humans.

- Bonnie expresses her opinion about vampire cruelty given her experience with them, fueling her desire to kill Klaus.

- Elijah reveals that he and Klaus weren't always monsters and explains his past loyalty to Klaus.

- He discloses Klaus's betrayal - the murder of their family - and his quest for atonement.

- This conversation provides Bonnie with indirect insight into Klaus's character and history.

Season 2, Episode 22 - "As I Lay Dying":

• We shift to Klaus, who wakes up naked in the empty woods after his first transformation as a hybrid. Elijah is with him and explains that Klaus was in his werewolf form for two days, even after the full moon had passed.

• Klaus is elated by this revelation. He smiles as he recalls every kill he made during his transformation, showcasing his newfound power and the control he has over his hybrid nature.

• Elijah reminds Klaus of their bargain - he wants to see the family members Klaus supposedly killed. Klaus assures Elijah that he will follow through with the deal soon enough.

• Klaus then taunts Elijah about having to break his word to save him, referencing Elijah's alliance with "the little witch" (Bonnie) and the Salvatores.

• In a subtle Klonnie moment, Klaus wonders aloud if the Salvatores and their "secret weapon" (referring to Bonnie) aren't seeking revenge. This shows that Bonnie is very much on Klaus's mind, recognizing her as a significant threat.

• Elijah urges Klaus to hurry, but Klaus tells him to lighten up, assuring him that they will soon be reunited with their family.

• Internally, Klaus reflects on his near-death experience at Bonnie's hands. Despite now being unkillable as the Hybrid, he's acutely aware of how close Bonnie came to ending him. This leads him to consider his next moves regarding Bonnie:

1. He needs to keep an eye on her, either to potentially use her power or to eliminate her as a threat.

2. With no witches currently serving him, he contemplates forcing Bonnie's hand by threatening her friends and Mystic Falls.

3. He also considers waiting for Bonnie to come after him in retaliation for Elena's death, curious to see her next move.

• Klaus finds himself somewhat impressed by Bonnie's power and fearlessness, remembering how she was ready to face both him and Elijah even if it meant her death. This sparks a sense of respect and a desire to gain her loyalty, possibly even corrupt her to his side.

• However, Klaus puts these thoughts aside for now. He has work to do first, needing to rebuild his "new order" with a new species sired solely to him: Hybrids.

• The scene then transitions to Stefan and Bonnie at the witches' house. Bonnie explains that she will attempt to summon Emily to find a cure for the werewolf bite. Bonnie attempts to contact Emily for a cure to the werewolf bite, but is rebuked by the spirits for misusing their power.

• Left alone, Bonnie tries to reconnect with the spirits, seeking guidance about Klaus's survival and new hybrid status.

• The spirits remain silent, leaving Bonnie questioning their concept of balance and feeling unsupported.

• This marks the beginning of Bonnie's doubt about the spirits and her role in maintaining supernatural balance.

• Her growing uncertainty and isolation could potentially create an opening for future interactions with Klaus, as both navigate their evolving supernatural identities.

I've been inspired! You didn't ask for a fic concept but here it is.

Emily had always been watching her descendant. She looked after all her kin through the years. The older Salvatore was too caught up in his own self pity to truly honor their deal. It was unfortunate knowing that she was partially responsible for her descendant knowing a vampire's wrath. There were thousands of Bennetts. She couldn't just watch over Bonnie but the teen stole most of her attention with Sheila dying and tapping into her powers. Emily couldn't resist using the power of a hundred witches to resurrect herself along with Jeremy Gilbert. Bonnie needed guidance and Emily was happy to provide it.

To Bonnie, it was strange having Emily in her life. The elder Bennett was more like an older sister than a mother. Emily would agree that she lacked a lot of mothering experience. Sometimes at night she would cry that she missed her children and Bonnie would comfort her. Because of this closeness, Bonnie agrees to go with Emily to Salem to better her magical knowledge. Neither Bennett witch expected Klaus to show up with Stefan.

Klaus was very satisfied with having his best mate, Stefan, by his side but he still longed to create more of his kind. He believed the world needed more hybrids. All his attempts were unsuccessful. He knew he needed a witch. He made plans to steal away Bonnie from Mystic Falls but discovers that she is elsewhere with another Bennett. Two Bennett witches to replace Maddox and Greta? Perfect. In Salem, the Bennetts reject Klaus' offer and a fight ensues with Stefan compelled to assist Klaus.

Upon hearing Emily cry out in pain, Bonnie stops and agrees to go with Klaus. Emily was her family. She wouldn't allow Stefan to drain her dry. Unlike Damon and Elena who were going crazy trying to track Stefan, Emily had another plan. She needed reinforcements. She travels the country recruiting Bennett witches to rescue Bonnie. When they arrive to retrieve her, they find Bonnie in Klaus' lap and she doesn't want to be saved.

The romance between Klaus and Bonnie was not immediate. His seduction of her was slow, far slower than he would have liked. From the moment he saw her in Salem, Klaus knew that he wanted to taste Bonnie's blood, her skin, her lips more than anything. Despite being even younger than Greta, Bonnie was unimpressed by his charm. Their magic lessons were more productive as every brush of their hands caused Bonnie's heart to skip a beat. Between their shared love for art history and Klaus' whispers of worship, Bonnie fell hard for the hybrid. She just hoped Emily wouldn't be too mad.

Part three of my East High drama department casting thoughts for different musicals!

Today’s musical: Be More Chill

Jeremy Heere: Jet (he needs a leading role and I think being Jeremy would be cool. Two Player Game with him and Carlos sounds so cool, like, Jet and Carlos together is truly a revolutionary concept for a duet imo)

Michael Mell: Carlos (Michael In The Bathroom would be performed so well by Carlos, like I actually think his experience with bullying would help him with character work and getting this number just right) (I also think MITB would sound amazing with Jets voice but Carlos fits better)

Jake Dillinger: Ricky (he can’t play a bad guy, but he also can’t be the lead. Does this one make sense I can’t tell)

Squip: Kourtney (I just think- Pitiful Children sung in Kourtney’s voice would be so powerful.)

Rich Goranski: EJ (I know he’s in college but has that stopped him from participating before? No, he’d have to be physically dragged from the stage at this point.)

Christine Canigula: Gina (I love Ricky and Gina as leads but it seems like an interesting idea to me to have Gina and Jet play love interests after their Hans and Anna roles where he wasn’t quite her true love interest because hans is evil)

(you might be thinking but what about Ashlyn here- and you’re right but I’m getting there, I have a much better role for her)

Jenna Rolan: Maddox (partly because there’s not enough characters to fill this cast list but also, an outsider who wants a group of friends seems like just her role.)

Chloe Valentine: Ashlyn Moon Caswell (I love this one because, well mostly because of The Smart Phone Hour (Rich Set a Fire), the whole back and forth phone calls thing I think she’d kill that so I’m gonna say I love it.)

Brooke Lohst: Seb (we can do another Sharpay in soft drag moment here and Seb is just the one to do it after he did Sharpay justice I think he not only can but deserves to do it again with Brooke.)

Mr. Reyes: Miss Jenn (mostly because she is their drama teacher and as long as no one reports her to the union, it’s fine.)

Mr.Heere: I think Mr.Mazarra had so much fun playing Coach Bolton in Miss Jenn’s production of High School Musical 3, that that he practically begged to be in this. Lmao okay no but seriously I think now that he’s dating miss Jenn he would do it, he also probably doesn’t mind it and kind of enjoys it but no he wouldn’t beg to be in it.

Best TV show ever (Real). Literally need to rewatch it because it's so good!

Gina Porter as Rapunzel: She is such a Rapunzel. Gina has such a heart of gold and is so fiercely loyal to those around her. Also, imagine her singing The Girl Who Has Everything??? Omg??? This is her role.

Ricky Bowen as Eugene FitzHerbert: Ricky is such a Eugene. He's hilarious, charming, wins over everyone's hearts, and is such a supportive boyfriend like Eugene is to Rapunzel. Also, the chemistry between him and Gina would be INSANE.

Ashlyn Caswell as Cassandra: Yes, this may seem like an unexpected choice, but I think Ashlyn would be incredible as Cassandra. She can be snarky, witty and sarcastic on the outside, but deeply cares about the ones she loves on the inside. The bickering between her and Ricky would kill me too.

Seb Matthew-Smith as Varian: LITERALLY THE MOST PRECIOUS CHARACTERS IN THE WORLD. Seb is such a Varian and I am not just saying this because Varian was voiced by Jeremy Jordan... who also originated Jack Kelly in Newsies, but Seb would nail the misunderstood antagonist who redeems himself in S3. IMAGINE HIM SINGING LET ME MAKE YOU PROUD? NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE WITH ASHLYN? READY AS I'LL EVER BE? TRUST ME ON THIS, OKAY?

Jet as Lance Strongbow: Lance was hard to cast but I ultimately went with Jet. This is because just like Lance, Jet did come off as arrogant at first but once his walls were torn down, he was easygoing and a true softie at heart. Also, the bond between him and Ricky would be immaculate.

Mr. Mazzara and Miss Jenn as King Frederic and Queen Adrianna: The true parents of HSMTMTS. These two just care about their wildcat children deeply, just like how Adrianna and Frederic care about Rapunzel.

Emmy and Alex as Keira (Angry) and Catalina (Red): The youngest on HSMTMTS will be playing the children on TTS. Their bond would just be so pure just like how they played Young Elsa and Young Anna in Frozen.

Lily as Zhan Tiri: Do I even need to explain? DO I EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN? LILY IS ZHAN TIRI PERIOD.

Antoine/Andy as Andrew: Shady boys who appear charming at first but are actually deceitful and have ulterior intentions. Listen, I know that Antoine/Andy is now "redeemed", but he's playing Andrew no matter what.

EJ Caswell as The Captain of the Guards: Beefing with Ricky just like how the Captain beefs with Eugene. He also gets to play Ashlyn's dad and he would LOVE getting to boss her around.

Big Red as Shorty: Clueless kings who are supportive to the ones they love and are quite loyal... we don't talk about S4 Big Red, okay? My man is loyal and not whatever they did to him in S4.

Kourtney Greene as Adira: I didn't know what to do with her, but she does have that fierceness that Adira has.

Maddox as Vex (S2): The no-nonsense attitude that Vex has reminds me of Maddox, especially regarding Maddox's attitude towards following the rules and stage management.

Carlos Rodriguez as Xavier: I don't really know anyone for Carlos. Maybe he would be a great Eugene?

okay my lovelies, this is a long post and the last i'll be making on this blog before i officially move to my new one and have this blog filled with queued posts of the link xD. so, if anyone has been reading my post lately my chronic fatigue has been flaring and taking up a lot of the energy i'd typically use for rping, which sucks. i have tried to get on a few times to work on drafts when i've had a sliver of energy but sadly a lot of the drafted threads i've lost muse for. it's not because i don't like them it's sadly because my cfs made me guilt myself about them and i got in my head and that made my rsd play up, it is an annoying, exhausting cycle. so, i've decided that aside from literally four threads in my drafts, i'll be dropping everything else (i'll list both below). as always this doesn't mean that we can't rp, i am happy to start new threads over on the new blog, including with the pairing we're dropping, it's just these specific threads. (i'll be posting the link to my new blog and following people soon after posting this so feel free to message me over there! note: replies may come slowly, especially this month as i'm prepping to see taylor swift, but after that, i have no major plans and i start infusions for my pain so i should hopefully be on a lot more!). if you owe me a reply that isn't listed feel free to message me and i'll tell you if i want to drop it or not, otherwise if you can tag the new account that'd be amazing! That, that was a lot of blood. That was way more of Maddox's blood than Jeremy ever wanted to see, in fact, and of course he didn't have any clean towels. Every towel in his van was covered in oil, and the shirt off his back was almost as sweaty. "Why not?" he asked--almost demanded. As panicked as he was, anger colored his voice. Why did every difficult person hate hospitals?

Meet my girl Eliza Hopp!

⁽¹⁷ᵗʰ ᵒᶠ ˢᵉᵖᵗᵉᵐᵇᵉʳ, ¹⁸⁰² – ¹⁸ᵗʰ ᵒᶠ ᴶᵃⁿᵘᵃʳʸ, ¹⁸⁴⁸⁾

— "Eliza" is short for nothing. Her name is just Eliza. Her name is just a partner name to her mother's, "Beth."

— More about her name: she lacks a middle name (common for her species before 1837 and the mid 1800s in general, although there were cases of this happening afterwards too) and her surname, "Hopp," came from her half brother. It was originally "Hop," as he was half snowy tree cricket, but was changed to "Hopp" later on as an homage to mayor and Eliza's dearest friend, Rainn Fort.

— She's yet another butterfly puppet!! Beth is a holly blue whilst Eliza's father, Jeremy, is a brown/orange butterfly puppet of an unidentified species.

— She has two half siblings, Cassandra Flinders and Thomas Hopp, and two step-parents on both sides of her family, Crispin [step-father on mother's side] and Nyx [step-mother on father's side]. Through her half-brother Eliza has a sister-in-law named Alessandra Hopp who's a gramophone puppet (illegally built), and through her half-sister a brother-in-law named Benjamin "Ben" Flinders who's an anthro lyrebird originally from Eastern Australia. Eliza is also an aunt of seven kids thanks to Ben and Cassandra: from oldest to youngest they are Bellatrix, Samuel, Juliet, Daphne, Fiona, James, and Ashley (M). If this wasn't enough there's also a funky Scottish spirit dude named Duncan who helped nurse and raise all said kids so that they'd survive.

— Technically she has a husband named Rhys Maddox but only when their souls go and live other lives and end up meeting each other on Earth again via new lives and all that junk. They don't plan on having kids but they love each other very much. 😌

— As of mid 2023 she's no longer a resident of Nowhere And Also Everywhere aka "the afterlife," but will return once her current life passes on.

— In terms of personality, Eliza was quite the pessimist and was known to have a very low self esteem. She saw herself as not good enough to do anything but be anything but the town maid (HEAVILY influenced by her backstory) and was very quiet, only speaking to a select few people she felt like talking to: Rainn Fort, poet (and commonly credited founder of the town TLP, alongside Rainn) Matthew Milkweed, Cassandra, and Thomas were lucky enough, among others. Since being dead, her conditions improved.

— (Read backstory for context) Due to her upbringing she struggled a lot with mental illness, specifically depression and anxiety [PTSD and OCD are possible for her as well, but I need to look more into the former and develop her personality a lil more before I make a final judgement.) Even more well known was her maladaptive daydreaming (not a mental illness but oftentimes a symptom of one), which started in early childhood and lasted for the remainder of her life. It's very likely her maladaptive daydreaming played a major role in her untimely demise. On top of maladaptive daydreaming, it's very possible she's hyperphantasic, as I see her having a very vivid imagination.

• Here you'll notice she lacks clothing. She's depicted with a rounder segmented body above but actually has a more rectangular body type without any segments. Lack of clothing was first made popular in the 1960s and became accepted in the mainstream in following decades but with the exception of the first puppets in the 10th century, this wasn't the case. Puppets wore clothes, albeit quite raggedy (basically think "poor person in the Middle Ages") and torn, especially those that worked in manual labor. Here, Eliza's without clothes simply because she didn't have a dress design.

• Eliza with her half-siblings!! She and Thomas were very close to each other before she passed, and both were very depressed and angry at the world thanks to very very less than ideal living situations growing up. Cassandra is more of a mediator figure in the trio, see. They might not look it here in this doodle but they were actually quite close during their time together. All three of them lived together in one house and Cassandra frequently visited even when she moved out to live with her husband.

• Here's a good example of what caterpillars look like! These babies really are like insect puppies, if puppies had a more plant/fruit/vegetable based diet (too much meat for a caterpillar can cause stomach aches). They typically have 6-8 legs and having a "tail" depends on genetics. Eliza here doesn't have one! Caterpillars oftentimes have their future wing prints on their body, kinda like a fun Easter egg for what's to come. Eliza has black spots since Holly blue butterflies have small black spots on their wings :)

• A version of the doodle above except she has a dress. Nothing much to say here besides um. I don't think I can draw loose clothing on complex forms too well.

Eliza's Backstory (1802 – 2023)

— This backstory is currently incomplete you can help by expanding it. Some details are still a WIP but I'd say it's coherent enough to count as a character backstory.

— A lot of the lore in the backstory was written by none other than @fishyfishyfishtimes ! She's an amazing worldbuilder so please go check her out. She only posts fish/sea creature related things (for now?) but maybe you like that too, I dunno.

Eliza was born (read as: hatched out of her egg) thanks to two puppet slave parents, Beth and Jeremy, sometime in 1802 (usually recorded as "the 17th of September" for simplicity); she was born in a household in London and spent the first couple years of her life around the house with fellow small children and even human children. Like many to-be slaves, contact with her parents was extremely limited if there was any contact at all as many children of slaves couldn't recognize who their parents were or were even allowed to interact with anyone outside their immediate field of view, or alternatively, they were to be sent off to a different household to work.

Reasonably, her living conditions for the first 35 years of life were less than ideal: like many "weaker" and more fashionable species, such as the butterfly, Eliza was resigned to do indoor tasks (most notably cleaning, given her fixation later on) and on rare occasions she would have to do garden work. She lived a life entirely at home, unaware of much of the outside world. Her time was mostly occupied by her excessive daydreaming while she slaved away.

This all changed on the 22nd of May, 1837, a day that's very well known in the (Universe) UK and around much of the world: after 8 centuries of being treated like mere "puppets," the first instance of puppets gaining personal freedoms finally occurred, on this particular day in British territory. Some human families paid royalties to those that had been treated so horribly. Puppet building was officially banned. There was only one nasty catch: instead of being integrated, both puppets and humans were now segregated by law. Thousands of puppets were grouped/grouped together themselves and left areas declared to be "human" areas (mostly big cities, such as London). Travel was allowed but heavily frowned upon by both human society and puppet society alike.

Somewhere in the midst of the chaos, Eliza got in contact with two puppets in particular, Cassandra and Thomas, who turned out to be her relatives. From 1837 – 1839, the trio traveled from developing town to developing town, eventually landing in a developing town between the counties of Kent and East Sussex, Townlocationplace ["TLP" for short]. Eliza quickly became infatuated with the mayor, Rainn Fort. The two became best friends but Eliza wasn't too content with just being friends. Unfortunately, Rainn had instead married a mute dragonfly woman named Alice Brown. This upset Eliza but she didn't push it. The pair remained good friends; Rainn helped her with literacy and even bought her new clothes to wear.

Eliza, however, remained in the cycle she was born into. If not in bed daydreaming, she would be seen wandering around the streets of the town aimlessly. On one of these trips, this proved to be an exceptionally dangerous practice.

On the night of the 17th of January, 1848, Eliza had written a love note to Rainn, wanting to deliver it to him in person. She had no clothes appropriate for going out in the snowy cold, only a gown. In the early morning hours she'd instead gotten lost and froze out in the dark.

Not too long after her soul was transported to Nowhere And Also Everywhere ("the afterlife") where she remained until finally trying to live a brand new life in the late 20th century. As of mid 2023, the present in the Universe, she's still living on Earth.

Potential 2022 US World Juniors Hockey Team: In Case We Still Have A Country

To say the least, it’s been a hectic week for Americans in international hockey. On Tuesday evening, the nation won its sixth gold medal in theWorld Juniorswith a dramatic, 2-0 victory over Canada. A gang of insurrectionists stormed into the United States Capitol around 12 hours later, ending a 200-year record of peaceful power transitions. So it’s a bit of a mixed bag all in all. Fortunately, IIHF president Rene Fasel reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to hosting tournaments in both the United States and Belarus later this year, indicating that a functioning democracy is not a deal breaker.

With that in mind, we shift our focus to a possible US World Junior team in 2022, just in case. The US will return to Edmonton to defend their gold title with players born in 2002 and younger. Six players from the gold medalists will return, leaving a large number of roster slots open for the United States to fill.

The second elephant in the room for next year’s lineup is the continuing coronavirus epidemic, which isn’t the man with elephant horns marching through the Senate chamber. As much as the virus caused havoc on this year’s roster, losing a few of players their chance at a gold medal, I believe we may see even more of an impact next year. When the virus shut down USA Hockey’s summer camp last year, I argued that the US was in a strong position since their roster was largely set. They had a lot of returning players and had seen enough from everyone else that most of the remaining slots could be readily filled.

The next year will be more challenging. There are just six returnees, and most of the rest of the team hasn’t played enough hockey in the last year to form views. The US will likely have summer camps, but I still believe it is a poor substitute for being in the rink and seeing someone play important games. This is going to be a tough squad to put together.

Here’s my best estimate at what a US World Junior squad could look like next year.

With the great ‘01 class aging out, there is clearly a lot of scoring to replace. They return three players who played important roles on the gold-medal-winning squad, albeit not necessarily scoring ones. Thomas Bordeleau would have been on the squad as well, but was unable to participate owing to Covid limitations, which we hope to resolve before next year.

Beniers has a chance of getting selected early enough, particularly given how well he performed in this tournament, that he gets signed immediately and plays in the NHL next year, rendering him ineligible. However, I believe the odds are slim.

I’m fairly confident about the top eight names on my Best Guess list. There will be some '03s who make it as well, with Lucius and Pastujov being the early front-runners. Due to a dearth of high-end scoring in the 2002 age group, the US may need them to be significant offensive players. Also, I haven’t watched them play yet, but there may be a chance for a '04 from the NTDP squad—which seems to be a very good group—to earn their way into the team.

Because there are so few youngsters in the qualifying age group playing college hockey at this time, the bottom few roster slots are more difficult to fill. I went with McKown, who didn’t contribute much with the NTDP U18s but has looked excellent so far at Colorado College. However, there is the possibility for someone in the USHL right now to have a great end to the season and a solid start to their collegiate career next fall, which would strengthen their case.
