Nat was sprawled across the back of a young man sitting on the sidewalk, arms draped over his shoulders and cheek resting on his head. He scarcely paid them any attention, however: all his focus was on his shoes. Carefully, one by one, he plucked out the laces.

"And that's why you can't help me film my set?"

"With my elbow, in this condition?" They twisted their arm, putting the tiny pink scrape on full, horrifying display. "If we get caught, how am I supposed to make my escape?"

Summary: Pilots are odd creatures and Fox feels for the young ones, so new to war. He does his best to help. (A potential future scene in Speak for the Silent.)

Fox counts helmets.

It’s an old habit, one he’s loathe to give up. It lets him know how many are leaving, how many came back, and sometimes who’s missing without waiting for the report. And despite the fact these aren’t his men -they’re Cody’s, Rex’s, Wolffe’s, or some other commander’s- he finds himself counting anyway.

The Rebel pilots were helmets too. He finds himself counting them as well. The Rebellion is still new and they’ve yet to have any ground battles, but plenty happen among the stars. Far too often the pilots, nat-born and clone alike, come back a helmet or two short.

The nat-borns take it the hardest. It makes sense, them not being soldiers and all. But they keep going out to fight. Fox watches as young pilots suck in a breathe, hold in their tears, and go to personally let a clone’s closest vode know that he won’t be coming back. The vode hold each other close, but all too often there’s no one to comfort the young nat-born pilots.

Fox follows them to their bunks, their hiding places, or sometimes to the med bay. He offers a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, and whatever else they might need. Pilots are an odd bunch, he learns. Every pilot is part of an intergalactic family it seems, friendships striking up quickly and holding true. And yet so many are alone, with no one from their old life left.

Their wing brothers and sisters are often all they have, and the younger ones take their deaths hard.

Fox counts their helmets, remembers the dead, and comforts the living.

Fox doesn’t know who started it, but soon the Rebels and vode refer to young pilots as “Fox’s kits”. He doesn’t bother to dissuade them. Once his brothers get a nickname stuck in their heads, there’s no getting it out. And as long as the clones say it, the rebels will too.

Still, it catches him off guard when Trace calls him dad.

It catches Rafa off guard too. But then she starts calling him “old man”, which is the Rafa equivalent of dad. The other young pilots start doing it too and Fox feels like he’s forty years old instead of thirteen. Fenn Rau and the other Protectors find it hilarious and start giving him dad advice. Every time someone calls him dad, Fox feels the overwhelming responsibility to take care of said pilot and he swears he gets a gray hair. He gets three when Fenn calls him “Grandpa” for different reasons.

Still, as he watches his kits get out of their ships and counts their helmets, finding them all there, he wouldn’t trade it for the galaxy.

when I wrote chapter 1, Thor was supposed to stay dead. that’s the big one.

this is one of the few times I’ve gone back to make significant edits to a chapter, so, like, if you read the first chapter 1 you know that New Asgard was originally very different and Loki had very little relationship with the Avengers

there was no meeting with 2012 Thor. Loki just punched out his younger self, took the scepter and the Tesseract, and he/Steve/Nat went back to the present day

Steve/Nat/Loki was not planned though I started putting the hints in during Chapter 2. in retrospect I would have made it explicit

putting in the Endgame battle at all -- if you reread Chapters 1 and 2 you might note that the plan to get the Power Stone there is to get it on Knowhere. it ended up changing back to the canon Morag scenario solely so I could get the Endgame battle in

who showed up to the battle -- at one point it was just going to go as canon and at some point the idea of the Nine Realms all showing up struck me like a bolt of lightning

I played with the idea of Loki using the Gjallerhorn in the traditional sense to summon the dead Asgardians from Valhalla, and that would be his temporary reunion with Thor (actually dead)

Sif coming back

how Thanos died -- at one point it was “fighting with Loki/Thor/Val/Sif”

(I will note that I never considered any version of the second Snap that Endgame uses. It was always going to be a straight-up slaughter of Thanos’s army.)

Yelena was a late addition. I came up with the scene where she crawls into bed with Natasha and the “DID YOU HAVE SEX IN THIS BED” exchange and then had to do the backwards work to make sure she was at the battle so that she could be in New Asgard

(yes, there was originally supposed to be a Steve/Nat scene in that chapter but it didn’t work out)

most of the post-battle chapter -- the Farbauti scene was originally planned to go differently. I wrote a number of different scenes for this and cut most of them.

there was a character who was meant to be introduced (you can see the set-up for his introduction in Chapters 4 and 5) but ultimately it just didn’t work because it shifted the focus too much. (he’ll be a sequel antagonist if there’s a sequel.)

the Asgardian party -- because I hadn’t originally planned to do the Endgame battle everything after Bruce’s Snap wasn’t planned from the start. (this was supposed to be a three-chapter story and Loki was supposed to end it Thor-less.)

Bruce being the one to snap at all post-Hulk. (the Hulk being the Soul Stone sacrifice was planned.)

Carol...you can tell I forgot about Carol in that chapter, I think.

the Thor and Natasha convo was a late addition! I think it was the last scene written, actually.

the last thing I put in this story was making Loki and Natasha stand on a widow’s walk because originally they were just standing directly on the roof. lol.

that that much of Loki’s missing year backstory came out! I was originally hoping to keep it as vague as possible but at some point you just gotta commit.

In 1887, Cincinnati Fans Really Did Try To Kill The Umpire

Among baseball’s hallowed traditions stands the God-given right of fans to abuse the umpire. Within limits, of course.. One hot August day in Cincinnati, fans got so riled up the umpire had to flee for his life and only a police escort saved him.

It was 1887. The season was reasonably good for the Cincinnati Redstockings. The team finished in second place behind the St. Louis Browns with a record of 81–45, rebounding from a dismal 1886.

The Cincinnati Redstockings at this time played in the American Association, not the National League. The American Association assembled the bad boys of baseball between 1882 and 1891, horrifying the puritanical National League by charging lower prices for tickets, playing baseball on Sunday and – most shocking of all – serving alcoholic beverages at the ball park. The National League tut-tutted that this was all to be expected from fans in the “river cities” of Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Brooklyn, Louisville and St. Louis, where morals and social standards were apparently questionable.

As August rolled around, Cincinnati was solidly in second place and had a winning record against the Brooklyn Greys. On Sunday, 21 August, the Redstockings and the Greys squared off for the final game in a three-game series. Cincinnati had dominated the first two games and the fans were hoping for the sweep..

To remind ourselves how long ago 1887 was in baseball years, understand that the wooden planks upon which fans sat at League Park were not yet known as “bleachers.” Instead, the crowd sat upon what ere then referred to as “bleaching boards,” from the idea that they were out there bleaching in the sun.

Baseball games did not require a crew of umpires in 1887. Only a single umpire officiated on 21 August 1887. He was a former ball player named John H. “Jack” McQuaid of Chicago. He was in his second season as an umpire and he eventually called the plays in nearly 1,000 games for the American Association and later for the National League.

Among the Cincinnati roster in this rebuilding year was Hugh Nicol, acquired from St. Louis after the last season. Nicol was an outfielder with a hot bat, but his stellar feature was lightning speed and the ability to steal bases.

The game against Brooklyn at first looked like the Redstocking sweep was assured. Going into the seventh inning, Cincinnati led 7-4, but Brooklyn’s bats came alive. By the bottom of the eighth inning, Brooklyn was ahead, 9 to 7. Redstocking outfielder George Tebeau lofted a home run and the crowd went wild. With two men out, Nicol managed a triple and the fans thirsted for the steal. With shortstop Francis Fennely at bat, Nicol made his move.

Fenelly was in a slump and most everyone expected him to strike out. As the Brooklyn pitcher let fly, Nicol dashed toward home. As expected, the pitch was a strike, the ball landing squarely in the catcher’s mitt, with Nicol just seven feet from the plate. And then, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer [22 August 1887]:

“He did something else, this prince of base-runners. He swung slightly off the baseline from third to home and then with a mighty effort sprang forward, clearing the arms of the catcher with a bound and landed upon all fours at the plate. A shout went up from the spectators that might have been heard for squares. It was increased as Nicol picked himself up and commenced brushing off his clothing.”

The celebration suddenly ceased as Umpire McQuaid called Nicol out. By leaving the baseline, he had forfeited the run. According to the Illustrated Police News [10 September 1887]:

“The crowd, or at least a greater part of it, at once made up its mind that McQuaid had given a wrong decision. They commence hissing. This in a moment changed into more demonstrative signs of disapproval. They hooted and yelled, and a break for the grounds seemed certain. The greater part of this show of indignation was confined to the bleaching boards.”

Some fans jumped onto the field to take the argument into Umpire McQuaid’s face. And then, the Illustrated Police News reported, disagreement took an ominous turn:

“Out from the boards flew a beer glass at the umpire. Another, and a second and third followed. The private police were hustling about endeavoring to quiet matters, but met with little success. A glass came from the pavilion and brought up almost at the umpire’s feet.”

For a time, McQuaid sought safety in the manager’s office as the police charged into the stands to restore order. Eventually, only one man was arrested, a printer named “Nat” Page, described as a mild-mannered citizen who got overly enthusiastic about baseball.

Play resumed. Brooklyn scored five more runs. The final score was 14 to 9. The Redstocking fans earned a scolding from the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune [22 August 1887]:

“Had it not been for the timely arrival of the [police] the uprising might have proved serious as the spectators were worked up to a fever beat of excitement and many liquor-soused fellows in the crowd seemed capable of doing anything that would bring the national pastime into disrepute and incite a general disturbance.”

Umpire McQuaid survived and called balls and strikes for another seven years. He died suddenly in Chicago, aged 36, just before the start of the 1895 season.

Insect legs, berry light, the crushing suffocating weight of soil.

Nat jolted upright in bed, nails clawing at their own arms as their breath came quick through gritted teeth. A nightmare. It was only a nightmare. Slowly, they lowered their hands to their lap. They could see skin caught in the crescents of their fingers, but their flesh still crawled. It took a force of will to not keep scratching. Instead, they worked their jaw and focused on their breathing, trying to relax.

They were starting to hate this place. They had always had dreams, but lately, the nightmares were endless. They dreaded going to bed, but no matter how hard they resisted, exhaustion pulled at them and their latest record for 'longest time awake' was a measly six hours. The doctor still didn't have an answer for them, whenever he bothered to say hello. Then there was the matter of their cast, hanging off their useless leg and rooting them to the ground. No windows. No light. No flight. It was a cage made special for them, stalked by a warden they had hoped they'd never see again.

They hated how easy it had been for them to identify his near-silent footfalls. They had become a ghost around him, perpetually dancing just out of view, while he stalked about, a minotaur in their labyrinth.

Balling their fists, they buried their face in their hands. They wanted to go home. Instead, the door clicked open. They straightened up quickly, smoothing out their face and sheets, but the smile they prepared for Fenn vanished when they saw Rowan instead. He looked nearly as surprised to see them as they were to see him. They rallied that smile back. "Aw, is our game of hide and seek over already?"

Something flickered behind his eyes that they couldn't quite recognize, but they could see the tension winding through his body, making him stiff as he shut the door behind him and walked to their bedside. "Too bad, so sad."

He hadn't changed much. They spied a few new scars, pale and shining under the florescent light, but other than that, he had the same heavy boots, stepping lightly in spite of them; the same sort of clothes--dressed like a warning sign--and the same knife-sharp eyes. He opened his mouth to speak. They readied themself for a torrent of hatred.

"I'm sorry."

The words crashed like steel beams between them. When Nat remembered their time with Rowan, they remembered his cutting tongue. They remembered his bitter disappointment, his harsh criticism, his belittlement. Don't be an idiot. Why would you think that's a good idea? Get over it. Rowan kept talking.

"I've had a lot of time to think, lately, about what happened last time I saw you. In retrospect, it's real fuckin' obvious. You were breaking down, and I was too focused on the next score to give a shit. I didn't hold up my end of our deal, and I made that your problem."

Rowan couldn't look at them, gaze fixed on the corner of their bed. For several moments, Nat could only stare. But then, laughter began bubbling up through Nat's throat, the sound all feathers and wings. They laughed, and laughed harder, even as Rowan's face turned bright red. His expression twisted with rage, and they got ahold of themself just enough to say, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I was so sure you hated me. What have we been doing? What do you want me to say?" They rubbed a hand across their face. "I never thought I'd see you again, and I was happy about that."

"I hated you for years."

"What changed?" A realization--and potential answer--clicked into place. "Where's Sofi and Garrot?"

"Sof's on the straight and narrow these days. Garrot's with her."

"And you're here."

"I'm here."

Nat rubbed their arm. Memories returned, unbidden: Rowan cajoling a furious Sofi into keying a car together. Rowan tossing back drinks with Garrot. Rowan with them in the dark, kissing each one of their burning, blistered fingers. An abrupt ache for that comfort seized their chest, yet they remained repulsed by it. The thought of being tied down again, to Rowan no less, made them sick to their stomach.

As if he read their mind, he continued, "This is something I decided to do a long time ago."

"Then what took you so long?"

"This was the last place I expected to see you. What the fuck is going on with you?"

"Hasn't anyone told you? I'm a medical marvel." They didn't entirely succeed in making it into a joke.

He had nothing to say to that. When he spoke again, it came with a sense of finality, "I said what I came here to say."

With that, he turned and left. When the door shut, it took a layer of Nat's skin with it: they felt red, raw, and exposed. Their heart ached, and they resented the feeling. They were alone in this pit, with no one to even complain to. Really, they only had one option.

Fenn scowls down at the stranger, incredibly upset with herself for forgetting how hard it was to get down from a tree when you're as short as she is. "If you laugh I'll kick your ass." She says. Her voice is raspy and rocky and her eyes glint like granite.

She pointedly does not ask for help, continuing to try and feel out a foothold with the tip of her shoe.

She'll figure this out or die trying.

"Okey-dokey." Nat offered a two finger salute before popping back into a picture-perfect lean on the park wall. They embodied relaxation itself, elbows on the bricks, body an easy curve, as they took a long sip of their smoothie and watched her struggle. She was obviously too stubborn to ask for help, so they may as well enjoy the show.

They couldn't see anything obvious she had climbed up there to retrieve, but from this two-second impression, they were willing to bet it was some kind of dare. Newbies. Always thought it was so easy to get up, and always underestimated how tricky it can be to get down.

"Question, would you kick my ass, if I offered a word of advice? Because if you move your foot abouuut six inches to the left and three down, what you find may surprise you." What she'd find was, sure, a branch, but more importantly, she'd find a beautiful, near picture-perfect cluster of cherry blossoms. Not that she was likely to notice, caught up in as dire straits as she was. Maybe they'd go grab it for themself, once she was out of the way.

The New Sounds (6/20)

Hi, guys. How’s everything? Weird times. Hope you and your people are all healthy and happy (enough).

When I started these New Sounds playlists back in January, the concept was a compilation of the best songs of each month – I actually checked release dates for every track in January and February. Then COVID happened (or the clampdown happened, anyway – the virus had been spreading among us for a while), and WFH happened. And I had more time to listen to music.

There was alot of classical that I always wanted to hear. And now I have – all the symphonies by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler, and almost half of them by Shostakovich, as well as a few by Bruckner and Schubert. Sibelius is next. There was alot of jazz that I always wanted to hear. And now I have – all of the pre-Columbia Records stuff by Miles Davis, most of the pre-Atlantic Records stuff by John Coltrane, and most of the Jazz Messengers catalog. OM and I are now doing a deep, chronological dive into Miles’ fusion-era studio material. (Blogpost/playlist coming eventually.)

I also kept up with fresh stuff, and that included revisiting records from earlier in the year to which I hadn’t given sufficient attention. Accordingly, the playlist concept changed. Now, it’s more like a compilation of the best new-ish songs that I heard during the month, even if they were released in a different month. Example: Kiwi jr.’s Football Money dropped in January, but I circled back to it last week, and a funny little track ended up on the June ‘list. The upshot is that a less strict rule had led to more tracks. Still, all killer, no filler.
