The Flux/Series 13 was a super fun series. (fair warning; spoilers ahead)

Am I a fan of the fact we were starved for content for so long just to get 6 episodes and a few specials in like what 3 years? No. But the episodes we DID get were so great!

I could feel the intent to inspire wonder in the world-building of the Whoniverse again. I heard lines purposively written to punch out a few cheap laughs while moving the plot forward. These are things that are inherent to the legacy of Doctor Who. Whimsy, coy humor, and satire.

Where certain plot points had fallen short of expectation, it was clear Chibs had taken at least some of that feedback and applied it to making the 13th series a memorable one.

Also:

Karvanista! Who's a good boy?! 🤗 Wait, hold on, maybe that's too presumptuous. Who am I to judge anyone's moral status on appearance alone? 🤭

Such a fun character with a classic Doctor Who "secret backstory". On a deeper fan appreciation perspective, this series was and still very much is a sandbox for creative innovation.

The side characters we met in these 6 episodes felt so well established and grounded in the narrative. Eustacius Jericho facing his death in a poignantly heroic way, Vinder & Bel's love story, Dan's earnest appreciation of Liverpool (and most importantly history), heck even Claire was worth her salt as someone to revolve the story around.

Was she captivating? Well, we're talking about narrative structure here so *clearing throat; failing to hide obvious blushing* no? I mean, no. She's really just a vessel for the Weeping Angels to have a voice which makes for an interesting plot device but it also sidelines her own independent will in the story. Still, when that's a "weak point", you're doing well!

Also, Yaz was incredible and I felt like we were finally able to grasp at her individual companion status. Prior to the departure of "the fam", she was the prototypical companion choice but we were splitting time with Graham & Ryan. A common fear people had before the series came out was the inclusion of Dan Lewis being an obnoxious and obvious replacement for Graham... but I don't believe his presence in the story had that lasting effect.

In fact, I think of the scenes we had with Yaz, Eustacius, and Dan as being a time for Yaz to shine in particular as a leader. Clever, calm, and concerted in her efforts. Yaz's demeanor is the only reason that facet of the journey was successful. Her relationship with the Doctor was empowering in that way we impact others through positive experiences. She pushed herself to become more motivated as our time with her moved along and we were rewarded with a meaningful degree of success in her arc through this story.

Plus her love for the Doctor felt so real; so fated to be one-sided.

Rose's romantic attachment to 9/10 had the advantage of an entire plot built around her; elevating her importance to the Doctor as a being we came to know, for a time, as Bad Wolf.

With Yaz, she is, in fact, an ordinary human who doesn't get to have some immense cosmically significant role with a title that gets plastered across the whole of the universe for the Doctor to piece together like a puzzle. She is an incredibly smart and capable person; she is also mortal.

Say what have you about Yaz + 13 (and I have my opinions too of them never kissing) but the Doctor keeping a distance from Yaz while acknowledging her feelings was still rather intentional and thematically moving.

You learn you're this being known as "The Timeless Child" and you've lost innumerable lifetimes of memories while beings you encounter ON THE REGULAR are persistently trying to tear the universe like a chew toy for their pleasure? Sorry, love. Maybe attachment to a human isn't a wise choice after all...

It's a decision made in a moment and a moment is all Yaz & the Doctor have. It adds levels to the tragedy of a romance with such a being that can travel all of time and space.

Maybe I'll write some fan fiction one day around The Flux. Around 13 & Yaz. Maybe something with Karvanista & a version of the Doctor forgotten to time.

Anywho, I love this show. I love it for all it's many eras. I love it for many different reasons. I truly believe value can be had in finding those aspects of enjoyment even when one Doctor or one era speaks more to us individually because what does the opposite hold? What does boundless criticism of "the writing" ever truly amount to?

The internet is teeming with "expert opinions" on how Doctor Who should have been made after every new season but gods is it the rarest thing to find people who choose to love it for everything it has already been and everything it can always continue to be...

The fox yokai's name is Jericho (Jay/Jeri for short)! They come from a smaller hidden city and were pushed toward the resistance when their city was destroyed by the Kraang. They have royal blood and enough war experience that they are quickly named a General.

Quick question: I was showing future Jericho's human form to my girlfriend and she kept going on and on about he looked like Eren from the anime Attack on Titan

I can kinda see it, but no, Eren wasn't an inspiration. I do see people compare him to Aizawa from MHA a lot though, which admittedly was a bit of inspo for future Jeo's vibe lol

an outfit for my beloved Wanda if she ends up going to the 2024 Hellfire Gala (if there is one at all tbh)!! I wasn't personally a fan of her 2023 look, so I decided to try my hand at designing a look of my own despite knowing jack shit about fashion. design breakdown, inspiration photos, and just general rambling under the cut :)

hehe, this is the part where I ramble about my design process!! I will confess, it took me four full sketches before I finally managed to purge the "high fantasy fairy queen dress" brainrot from my mind and arrive at a concept that actually felt like Wanda. given that as of her 2023 solo run, she's a self-employed business owner, a twist on a suit felt appropriate!! it's elegant, it's dramatic, it's sexy, it's powerful, and it's also a garment that, like, real people could wear?? which, I know this is a comic book and she also has magic, but, like. girl deserves a fit that's also reasonably comfortable. girl deserves pockets (I didn't showcase them, but the pants absolutely have humongous magic pockets.) talking fabric, I will confess that I really don't know much, but I picture the red fabric being pretty thick silk and the black fabric possibly being velvet? the shoes are beaded pretty much all over with the same crystal material as the crown.

as I continued to refine my concept, I looked to Kevin Wada's 2015 redesign for Wanda's last solo run for more inspiration. that's how I arrived at concepts such as the use of beaded accessories, floral embroidery, and especially the plunging neckline. I also knew I wanted to pay homage to Wanda's heritage without being stereotypical, so I decided to look to Zita Moldovan, a Romani designer whose site is linked above, to see how she incorporated her culture into her work. (as an aside, there's this other dress from her Romany Dreams collection that I would LOVE to draw Wanda in at some point, but that was not this project. maybe soon.) the dress I included in my (very, very trimmed down) inspo board was my primary reference as I drew the pattern for the pant part of the pantsuit. (I attempted multiple versions where the pattern was in color, but it wound up looking really muddy, so I opted for the slightly more subtle version you see here.) the pose for the final piece doesn't showcase the epaulette well (or the crown pin, which was another reference to the Kevin Wada design), so here's a bonus sketch that came out of the "design" part of this whole project that shows them both better:

anyone who has followed my art knows that I generally draw my Wanda with a high ponytail, but I decided to spice things up and draw her with a half-up like she has circa Uncanny Avengers #27 (this is when she and Jericho are being so very sweet together). the golden hoop earrings are another thing I carried over from my general Wanda design, and the makeup is just a quick thing I came up with on the fly. it's not the spiciest, I know, but I decided there was enough going on elsewhere that she didn't need a crazy makeup look as well. the full-finger ring is specifically a reference to her very first appearance in X-Men #4, where she calls upon her power by pointing her right index finger. I thought it would be cool to accentuate that finger as a result!!

and there you have it--a tribute to Kevin Wada and Zita Moldovan from an artist who knows nothing about fashion but does have severe enough blorbo brainrot to attempt to design an outfit regardless :D

I'd love to ask stuff about your work since it's actually really engaging, but I kinda never know what to ask. uhhh... what's your inspo? Who's your fave character of your own work? Which one would you say is the most "like you"? Tea or coffee? Have you ever regretted a scene so bad you rewrote it, even though it messed up the flow of the story? Did you ever start actually disliking one of your own characters while writing?

Oh my! Well, first and foremost, thank you for sending in an ask! Secondly, I'll go off of my latest finished work (which is, of course, Speak Not to the Gilded Dragons) Then, to go in some sort of order here:

Inspiration:

I would say it was a combination of wanting to put out the kind of story I would want to read as well as a certain sentiment I shared on this blog waaaay back when during the 'trapped in a virtual world' boom in anime and popular media. It more or less went 'why don't we ever see the real lives of the people trapped in the game?' And it wasn't to say that oh, the audience needs to see a bunch of mundane high school nonsense instead of a magical virtual world but, rather, utilize dynamic storytelling in both venues to create a richer story.

Favorite character:

As of right now in Speak Not, it's definitely Dr. Jericho Nwadike and his in-game self, The Dread Beast: Fimbulventir. While I delve into some fucked up stuff with all of my characters, I feel that Jericho/Fimbulventir have the most opportunities for it.

Most 'like you':

I would say that both of my core characters (Jericho and Linus) have elements of my personality and drives.

Tea or coffee:

Jericho would be both; he has a strong appreciation for food. Linus would be neither; he's a trainwreck in the midst of morning and isn't shoving anything down unless its horrifically unhealthy.

Have you ever regretted a scene so bad you rewrote it, even though it messed up the flow of the story?

I haven't written any bad scenes (and that's not me saying I'm a perfect writer, far from it, I just haven't gotten to that point yet), but there were several portions that I initially had planned for the first volume of Speak Not that I had to remove due to either the volume going too long or figuring that the scenes would work better latter on.

Did you ever start actually disliking one of your own characters while writing?

It's funny, both of my core characters come from... not too great households, yet I ended up being taken aback by just how much of a bastard Linus's dad came out to be.

BEFORE JERICHO

the eternal winter being all she ever knew, paisley tries their best to remain positive for the future. living with their family, which consists of their parents and three older siblings, she was always protected. she never really felt like she was in danger. it didn’t help that she was always with other settlements either. she never had to witness an attack. that was until she was fifteen. icebergs came into the settlement at night and nearly half of the people she grew up with perished. their father took them and one of their older brothers to safety before going back for everybody else. it felt like forever before he returned. but alone. they had to move even through their turmoil.

finding jericho not long after a few weeks, they settled down. their father never stopped looking for his wife and other children. he’d often volunteer on scouting missions, being quick on his feet and knowing the location, but he always came back empty handed without the rest of his family. each time paisley’s hopes dropped but she never let it keep them down. one day they would be a happy and whole family again.

PRESENT JERICHO

as soon as she got here and after recovering from their harrowing escape and weeks out in the eternal winter, paisley befriended many. she told stories of old friends, of how there was a tamed arctic fox, or of how their older brother was one of the bravest guys she ever knew, or of how she got to know how to knit. she could tell some knew she was not experienced with what was out there but after nearly becoming an iceberg theirself the last day before they had found jericho, paisley wasn’t too keen on going back. she had to find their place here and given there was mandatory basic training maybe she could prove upon herself.

being a worker - working at the market place and being a cleaner - she is content. but anytime hunters or scouts come back she’s always there to ask if they seen anybody matching her mother or siblings descriptions. maybe one of these days she could be brave enough to go out herself but she doesn’t think that’s anytime soon. so she stays within jericho. her older brother is security and that fits him perfectly. he’s become a bit closed off throughout the years but she still loves him. their father is also thinking of retiring sometime soon and she’s worried there will be no-one out there to help find her mother and other siblings and each year that passes is more motivation for them.

finally got hit with the deep jericho inspo and that idk jericho killing her first person on her own and something deep inside her feeling like that isn't right she's not the killing type she would never do this but yet she did it so easily and jericho internally reminiscing  and being like just like moon we all go through changes, now whether those changes are good or bad is to be debated. was she a killer before? she doesn't think so, at least not this literally in the sense of the word as far as she knows. the feeling of shooting a gun is foreign to her but here she is. shooting someone with a gun.
