Welcome Portugal!
A couple of days ago, we were let know that Portugal would release the song they would be sending to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Nice on November 26. Their choice was "Where I Belong" sung by Júlia Machado. And I'm looking forward to give it a listen for all of you!
I pressed play, and am already really liking the scoring of the song. The message is already poignant and I'm only on the first chorus. And with the message, it makes it PERFECT for Junior Eurovision. Her voice is amazing (which makes sense because she won The Voice Kids over in Portugal...so deserved). I'm actually getting chills from this song WOW!
That was...truly amazing. I actually had to stop what I was doing to process what I just heard it was that good. I'll be doing a ranking later (once all the songs are out), but this may rank pretty high I don't know...
Anyways, best of luck, Júlia, in Nice!

Can you Give us your top 16 of this year's jesc, king? And do you think Italy will do well?
youtube
UNITED KINGDOM (it was love at first listen: this blondie is so sassy it hurts, she will kill it on stage)
2. ARMENIA (always liking the Armenian language and these KPOP sound and vocals are just YES, GO GIRL)
3. NORTH MACEDONIA (oh heck, this is my absolute GUILTY PLEASURE: I suddenly wanna grab an umbrella and start silly dancing in the street)
4. NETHERLANDS (the energy of this kid is amazing: the sound is quite cheap but dammit, it's gonna be BELLISSIMO, let's enjoy la festa)
5. ITALY (she's a bit stiff but voice and funny song could land her in the top 5, not top 3 -I guess)
6. POLAND (a good dance tune is always welcome, especially when it comes from Poland at JESC)
7. GEORGIA (this is simply good, well produced and sung)
8. IRELAND (young Isla Fisher playing Titanic in the wind: I'm loving it)
9. KAZAKHSTAN (surely one of the most enjoyable ballads this year)
10. MALTA (nice bop but it's not special for me)
11. UKRAINE (Ok, they could have sent nothing different from this, I know and I get it, but I just don't fancy this entry, beside the message behind it. All my love to Ukraine, always and anyway ❤️)
12. SPAIN (always Spain playing cheap Spain...)
13. FRANCE (the kid is fun but I HATE this sonority)
14. ALBANIA (such a sweet girl but high notes are not everything in life)
15. SERBIA (I usually love a honest melancholic Balkan sound, but this is too sad and lacking drama)
16. PORTUGAL (there's something so off about this kid playing wasted...)

Junior Eurovision 2023 detailed opinions before the show. Part 2
And here am I, with the second part of my Junior Eurovision 2023 personal opinions by tier (rather than ranking, these songs are more difficult to rank than in adult Eurovision). We covered the 2 lower tiers, the ones that are not the worst songs of history (they're kids after all, and at least the songs are less disastrous than some of the worst entries in the adult edition's history) but not the best compared to the others. Now it's the turn for the third one, the wildcard (for reasons I will explain), as the last two will be joined in one (or two, if Tumblr limits the content size).
The tier-list, for reference
Tumblr media
Tier 3: "Not winners, but I identify myself with them"
A small talk before the first song of this tier, to explain why is it a wildcard I didn't think I would bawl "It was Eurovision, not depression!" over MORE THAN ONE SONG in this year's Junior Eurovision. Sure, one thing is one depressing/tear-jerking song per year like Forever (2020) or Nezlamna (2022, and by a lot considering the lyrics and the war); but more than one is because either I got too emotional lately or these songs really tugged me in the heart, one way or another, by any mode. The only reason they are not in the lower tiers and in a personalized one as a wildcard, although still not the top favorites T-T
🇵🇹 Júlia Machado "Where I Belong"
Portugal surprised me a lot the two last years. One with Simao's "O Rapaz" and his out-of-the-box voice that would send him to adult Eurovision in a click (even if the Discord fandom says he sounds like a grandpa ._.), and then Nicolas' "Anos 70" with a Damiano David-like voice (affectionate) and the rock ballad of the rock ballads in JESC (how don't we have that kind of songs this year? ;w;). And I was hyped for Portugal's selection, expecting everything...except this.
Tumblr media
Sure, the signals were clear when they said the song would talk about Júlia's personal experiences with bullying during her school studies in USA, but I expected it to be more of a "Stand By You"-like entry (Albania 2021). And then the song came and gave me the slap. For being a soft ballad, as someone who understands almost 50% Portuguese vía childhood comics and dubbing, the hit felt as hard as street concrete, and fricking relatable. Like wanting to hug Júlia each time I heard it.
By rumours they say the clothing for Júlia will be a key part in the live version. And I really, really hope it results good, because this song (and the next entries) deserves the best staging and to not land last.
🇪🇪 Arhanna "Hoiame Kokku"
Estonia in the Junior edition? The surprise of the year, I say. After hearing Serbia and Kazakhstan were leaving this year (both for bad results in Yerevan, one having extreme sickness bc of COLD OPENING CEREMONY OUTSIDE to the point the jury show was shown instead of live, and the other with a good studio song and feeling plastered by the live version ;w;), I was hoping for a miracle to complete the 16-entry list. And Estonia, from all countries, entered the contest, and with a contestant kid already! A good reveal! It was 100% ensured they would bring a ballad rather than another song genre (Alika's "Bridges" gave them confidence, I see). But this one got me off-guard a lot.
Tumblr media
If I got emotional with this one was rather because of the studio videoclip streamed in YouTube (during work, and me trying to hide the emotional tears) than the lyrics themselves. But it still hit me a lot. Arhanna's vocals are such of a level I never imagined for Estonia, since I expected a lot of things being their JESC debut, and the piano touch speaks "inspired by Alika" a lot (in a good way, "Bridges" was amazing, even if Ollie's "Venom" was my first election). But the video, my lord in Christ, was the main reason I put this song in this tier. And adding that, by lyrics and all, this reminded me a lot of Sora and Mashiro's friendship (yeah, into the Hirogaru Sky Precure fandom since last months). Yeah...
Should they ruin the staging for this one, I will be totally angry. At least they would make the piano a "ghost-play" like in Alika's case, but please, please don't ruin this one with the live version!
🇵🇱 Maja Krzyżewska "I Just Need a Friend"
Another song that I underrated during its first version like Viola's "Bota Ime" from Albania. The Szanza Na Suckzes 2023 (Poland's current JESC selection) experience was something new for me, from the fact they decided to use ONE SINGLE ORIGINAL SONG to test which finalist went better (instead of one song per finalist like in previous years with Laura and Sara James, something that showed which kid had more potential better) to expecting it to be at least decent compared to the unspeakable crime TVP "sent" for Liverpool. As for the finalist kids, I agree with the fandom it should have been more of a pair given the song's meaning than just one kid, but well, TVP is TVP and we can't do anything. The song at first listening by Maja was not a big hit for me for then. I said "they either revamp it like with Laura's "To the Moon" or they will place last with Albania". And it was in the last places for a long time until the studio version came to YouTube (and then the video T-T)
Tumblr media
For the song first. WHAT A REVAMP. I had low expectatives and yet the new version WAS SOMETHING AMAZING. It was waaaay leagues above the Szanza version, it had more strength and feeling. And Laura sounded WAY BETTER. I was unsure where to place it for the moment. Until the next day the video was streamed early in the morning...To tell you that, by the end of the clip, I called my pet Yorkie, Canela, to my bedroom and hugged her hidden in the blankets while sobbing a lot before my normal wake-up hour, I say a lot of how I felt of the video. The dog there is really a good boy/girl :,)
Knowing Poland's history of Capcut add-ons in screen (Viki's countdown, Sara's butterflies and flowers, Laura's floating moon and a clip of her and her besties in the intro, Ochman's thunders and rain, and whatever tf they tried to make in THAT song in 2023), I just expect for them to NOT SCREW this song with those things. The song is NOT FIT for it, and it will be a CRIME if they dare to do it in the live version. PLEASE. NO. EFFECTS
----------------------------------------------------------
And that's a wrap for this second part! Now we get to the best songs (in my opinion) for Junior Eurovision 2023! See ya! :D

have you listened to the jesc songs? which is your favourite??
I HAVE NOT BUT I SHOULD. you know what. i'm gonna listen to them in the bus and you'll get my live opinion on them:
-Albania (Bota ime - Viola Gjyzeli): Love the harmonies! It really sounds like an esc Albanian song huh. Very epic and such.
-Armenia (Do it my way - Yan Girls): OH LOVE THE VIBES FOR THIS ONE!!! GIRLBAND GOODNESS !!! Also I love they still sing in Armenian even if there's bits of English there :) I am sure it has a sick choreography but alass i'm hearing them on spotify
-Estonia (Hoiame Kokku - ARHANNA): ooooh this one sounds so powerful!!! Love the chorus with the two voices! It's definitely a serious topic, sounds like it has a strong message
-France (Cœur - Zoé Clauzure): I am sadly not inmune to french singing. It just sounds too good I have no option but to stan 😔. Oh that little 'ay ay ay' in the chorus is so familiar to me but I couldn't tell you why. The high notes !!!!
-Georgia (Over The Sky - Anastasia & Ranina): I was sad the song started in English but now they're singing in Georgian which :) THE HARMONIES !!!!! THE LITTLE SCREAMING PARTS !!!!!
-Germany (Ohne worte - Fia): Uuu I really like her voice. It sounds kinda school? I don't know how to explain it. Not much else to say tho, the song is fairly simple. Not that it's a bad thing tho.
-Ireland (Aisling - Jessica McKean): Is that Irish I'm hearing ????? If it is big slay from Ireland in jesc exactly !!! If it's not I'm so sorry I cannot understand anything </3 Nevertheless, love her voice and how whispery it is!
-Italy (Un mondo giusto - Melissa, Ranya): OHHH THAT RASPY VOICE ONE OF THEM HAS !!!! INSANE !!!! It's sounds so epic !!! Why do they sing parts in English tho :( The chorus is insane !!!
-Malta (Stronger - Yulan): This one also sounds pretty epic, I can see this one playing in the radios. Love the voice as well. That last part !!!! And the highs !!!
-Netherlands (Holding on To You - Sep & Jasmijn): Love to hear Dutch! It sounds so good in song !!! Uuuu love the vibes with this one honestly!!! THE BEAT OH MY GOD IT'S SUCH A BOP
-North Macedonia (Kazi Mi, Kazi Mi Koj - Tamara Grujeska): We love a Balkan ballad exactly !!!! She has such a beautiful voice! Quick question is it a requirement for a percentage of the song to be in English??? Cause tons are mixing English in there and I cannot say I love it. Anyways. Classic Balkan ballad with folk elements, what's not to love honestly.
-Poland (I Just Need a Friend - Maja Krzyzewska): wait why is this one so depressing ??? a very pretty voice tho. it's just very :( the bridge is cute
-Portugal (Where I belong - Júlia Machado): her voice singing in portuguese is quite possibly the cutest thing i've ever heard omg 😭 too much English tho :( once again her portuguese is sooooo
-Spain (Loviu - Sandra Valero): okay polyglot queen I see you !! These lyrics are so cute actually 🤧 in general the song is so cute!!! You were not wrong this song is actually good :)
- Ukraine (Kvitka - Anastasia Dymyd): ooooh I do love me an ethnic song yesss!!! Love the beat for this one! THE SCREAM!!!
-UK (Back to life - STAND UNIQU3): This one is also super radio friendly. And is this another girlband??? Cause if then massive slay for them! The tune is catchy enough
OKAY CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW EVERYONE (EXCEPT I GUESS MALTA) SUNG IN THEIR LANGUAGES ???? EVEN IRELAND ???? WHY DOESN'T THIS HAPPEN IN ESC
anyways. after this first listen I think my favourite is Netherlands! of course as with esc the scenography and live vocals are quite important so this might change. but yeah. for now Netherlands is the one for me :)

The Battle Of The Years (JESC Edition)
A couple weeks ago, I wrote a three-part post pitting the 2023 Eurovision entries against the 2024 entries by country. After talking to people (and by that I mean my sister) and coming up with ideas for fun posts leading up to the contest, I came up with the idea to do the exact same thing, but with the Junior Eurovision Songs!
Of course, I'm not able to do 2024 as the Junior Eurovision songs for this year won't be out until well after the contest is over. So, I'm gonna do the 2022 songs vs. the 2023 songs by country, divided by where they finished on the board. I'm also not going to do explanations as that will make an already long post longer and...yeah.
France: Oh Maman! vs. Cœur. Winner: Cœur.
Spain: Señorita vs. LOVIU. Winner: LOVIU.
Armenia: Dance! vs. Do I My Way. Winner: Do It My Way.
United Kingdom: Lose My Head vs. Back To Life. Winner: Back To Life.
Ukraine: Nezlamna vs. Kvitka. Winner: Kvitka.
Poland: To The Moon vs. I Just Need A Friend. Winner: To The Moon.
Netherlands: La Festa vs. Holding On To You. Winner: La Festa.
Albania: Pakëz diell vs. Bota Ime. Winner: Bota Ime.
Germany: Ohne Worte
Malta: Diamonds In The Skies vs. Stronger. Winner: Stronger.
Italy: Bla Bla Bla vs. Un mondo giusto. Winner: Bla Bla Bla
North Macedonia: Životot e pred mene vs. Kaži mi, kaži mi koj. Winner: Kaži mi, kaži mi koj
Portugal: Anos 70 vs. Where I Belong. Winner: Where I Belong
Georgia: I Believe vs. Over The Sky. Winner: I Believe.
Estonia: Hoiame Kokku
Ireland: Solas vs. Aisling. Winner: Solas.
Kazakhstan: Jer-Ana.
Serbia: Svet bez granica.

my first listen jesc 2023 rankings!
ireland 9.5/10 oh i adore the mood of this, and her dress! this is going to be BEAUTIFUL on stage i can already tell, and she's got such a lovely voice. as long as she can perform it live, she'll be a big contender.
spain, 9/10 oh this is SO fun, i love the video. so many fun colours, i hope the staging lives up to the vibe this gives off. it doesn't feel like a winner in a competition - a little bit too pop-y for that - but is DEFINITELY going in my playlists!
portugal, 9/10 i REALLY like this one, her voice is beautiful, it's such a wonderful mood. i'm not sure how it'll translate to the stage - i'm crossing my fingers she can do really well. another one that's a big favourite for me but doesn't feel like it'll win a competition
germany, 9/10 oh my god she's singing AND signing? that is IMPRESSIVE. big fan of the instrumental, this is another one that has a huge potential with the staging. the fact that i'm already trying to sing along and i'm writing this during the second chorus says it all
georgia, 9/10 i wanted georgia to win last year, and i honestly really love the music video. if the staging matches it with storytelling this could be another really strong contender. the usual comment on recorded vocals, hope they can deliver on stage. LOVE the costumes
malta, 8.5/10 some great vocals (if replicated live), a really good song all round honestly. we'll see how it translates to the stage, i think they could risk taking away from the sound of her voice if they try to get too busy with the staging
ukraine, 8.5/10 the fact that a kid young enough to still be loosing baby teeth is performing LIVE this well already is insane to me. the staging is fun, the colours are wonderful and bright, and i love her costume. super catchy too!
united kingdom, 8/10 last but not least - us! the costumes are great, though these kids look more like 17 than 12/13! there's a clear direction for the staging already, the dance is fun, the song is quirky and unique. if they can perform it live it'll be great!
france, 8/10 i love that they've recycled la zarra's props 😉 it's very france, which checks out. france always delivers so no surprises here. much like the others, just fingers crossed she can deliver the vocals live.
the netherlands, 8/10 this is a builder, the dancers in the first part are going too hard for the song at that point. the staging looks fun, it's all very co-ordinated. it's a fun song, but possibly too generic-pop to stand out? the vocals are very good, especially the young girl!
armenia, 8/10 a music video always makes it harder to assess what live vocals will be like, but it's a fun song, lots of bright colours, good choreography. if they can perform is live it'll be great on the stage!
estonia, 8/10 music video again so hard to judge live vocals, but the song is very pretty. the staging should be powerful but simple if the video is anything to go by. the worst part about (j)esc is pitting ballads and pop songs against each other
italy, 7/10 the vocals are very mature, though the usual pre-recorded disclaimer applies. i'm not sure i have much of a sense of how staging, lighting, costumes etc. might work so i'm a little lost with where to put this
poland, 7/10 it doesn't feel too special, hopefully with some polishing between selection and next months there'll be less nerves, she had a great voice further into the song. i don't think this will make waves, but i could be wrong!
north macedonia, 7/10 she has a lovely voice, and i hope those moons(?) feature in the staging. i like her voice, but it's pre-recorded and doesn't quite match with the video. we'll see how she does live. it has potential!
albania, 6/10 viola has a solid voice, especially if those pre-recorded vocals are also her, damn good range. the instrumental feels a bit empty, & between singing there's not much in the way of stage presence, but she should have more to play with at jesc.
