another cultural detail in Tarkir: Dragonstorm Episode 1
the opening mentions the tea house was run by a woman who had 3 husbands. this isn't just a polyamorous character– polyandry is normal in Tibetan culture, though not really common anymore. and i think it makes sense that Tibet would be one of the cultures that Jeskai borrows from.
The building, which was often the first or last stop for anyone coming from or venturing to the Salt Road, slouched on the lip of the fishing village surrounding Dirgur Lake Monastery. In years past, it'd been a much smaller establishment, operated by an elderly monk who'd forsworn her vows for a raucous triptych of husbands—a tea house with ambitions. What’s your favorite three-color combo in MTG?
I’ve seen a few polls for favorite guild, and I thought it would be neat to make one for favorite shard/clan. I would really appreciate if you decide to reblog; I’m a pretty small blog, and I’d be curious to see what the wider MTG Tumblr community thinks.

Magic the Gathering (MtG) is a card game created in 1993 that has continued into the modern day. While much of its success can be attributed to creative ideas in world building, gameplay, and characters, pieces of it are hinged on one of the games core concepts: the “Color Pie.” In Magic, every card is grouped into one of a few categories: White, Blue, Black, Red, Green, Colorless, and…

Ever find it weird that jeskai(the color combo) supports both Buddhism and the divine right of kings, as evidenced by Aragorn's monarch theme.

March 14, 2025 Draft
list: Pink Sleeves | 5 player draft @ Steadfast Brewing Co | 4 packs of 15, burn the last 4 from each pack. everyone started with a Cogwork Librarian | organized on the Toronto MtG Cubers discord
This was my first time drafting at Steadfast, and it was super, super fun. Great vibes from everyone and delicious beers. I've never had a bad experience drafting with strangers / people from online, but the energy was great and I had a fantastic time.
On top of that, Tales from the Mana Crypt's own Eric wrote up an amazing draft report!

🏆 3-0 (6-0) Golgari Elves drafted by Zach
The highlight of my night may have been misplaying my last turn in game 2 against Zach (I should have selected Fiery Confluence modes differently and then cast Pyroclasm), and then Zach showing me the absurd amount of shit he was set up for if the game went any longer, avenue after avenue after avenue to lock down the game.
As told by Zach:
"An elf wheeled from my p1p1, I identified green was open and moved in using my Cogwork Librarian to secure my first 2 green cards and ended up being the only green drafter."
"I built around casting one of my 1 mana elf on turn 1 (4x 1 mana elf, 10 untapped green sources, 15 lands) and I leaned into the golgari theme trying to play with my graveyard with Hogaak and Living Death. Even though I never ended up casting either of those cards, they would have been really good in almost all of my games!"
I mulliganed aggressively to start every game with a t1 elf and it paid off. Vengevine was a beater."

2-1 Jeskai Tempo, drafted by Eric
[Eric's Draft Report]
This was the one deck I didn't get to play against, but Eric wrote a great report!

2-1 Esper Boomer Control, drafted by Gray
I love a good small game deck. Zyym was an all-star, and I was impressed that Far//Away did things.
I got to cross my fingers and cast Massacre Wurm into open mana and have it resolve (to be answered immediately, but it still resolved damn it!).

Rakdos... stuff, drafted by SJ
I didn't feel like I ever had a great start with this deck and it wasn't aggressive enough and didn't come together as a real sacrifice deck. There was a lot of sideboarding, which I loved. Bloodghast being ~counter-proof felt reassuring, and I got some nice hellbent upticks with Liliana. Grafted Wargear may have been my MVP.

Azorius Blink, drafted by GL
This photo is the entire on-colour pool. This deck didn't quite come together for whatever reason. In the portions of games I got to watch I was pleased to see Mirage Mirror be relevant, and it was fun to play around

Another alt art, this time it's Zedruu, the Greathearted
Zedruu was the first EDH deck I threw together back in 2017! Didn't buy a precon or know any cards outside of the Kaladesh and Amonkhet blocks, so it was a doozy to make lol
Nowadays I really like handing my opponents enchantments, specifically removal spells like Oblivion Ring or the three other cards featured in the art, Nine Lives, Illusions of Grandeur, and Form of the Dragon.
Obviously I do not own the artwork used on either of those three cards, not do I create the background in this card (That's a land card called Rainbow Vale). Still learning anatomy and finding an art style that works for me. Might come back later and make this piece more "my own" than it is currently.

Okay so the Jeskai on Tarkir are represented by three colors of mana:
White: Compassion, Order Blue: Intellect, Cunning Red: Action, Creativity, Passion
When the Dragonlords eleminated the Khans, Ojutai reformed the Jeskai in his image, REMOVING RED MANA from the Jeskai.
What must it have been like when the revolution started again, to move from strict doctrine and adherence to the martial and scholastic ways of your predecessors to be encouraged to be creative? What must it have been like to have been freed from the strict histories and encouraged to seek new knowledge?
What must it have been like to go from isolationist martial artists and scholars to adding PASSION. CREATIVITY. ACTION. They could definitely fight. But now they had a reason. They could fight FOR themselves.
No wonder the rebels from all the clans flocked to Narset, and looked up to her. She was powerful. She was cunning. And she was willing to DO SOMETHING to end the oppression of the Dragonlords.
Narset is the BEST of the Jeskai.
Unification through understanding. Knowledge fueling strategic action. Unification through cooperative action.
Narset rediscovered a connection to red mana on Ikoria, and she brought that back to her people. She is the BEST of them, but that is only ever IN SERVICE of them.
Tumblr media
I will always love Narset. She is one of the few characters we have seen from being fairly young toward getting older, and I love her. I was SO worried about what they were going to do with her. And we'll never know FOR SURE what passed during the overthrow of the dragonlords, probably. But we do know that there was one former exile who wanted EVERYONE to be free, not just her people.
No one person deserves to rule Tarkir.
But if any one Khan could do so fairly...
Don't mind me I'm just over here feeling very emotional about what MUST have happened with the Jeskai during the overthrow of the dragonlords
