You were back in the crow club with the Conductor this time and Inej had dragged him to the second floor with you to keep him out of sight for now.
"Jesper, with me," Kaz said when he walked out of his office. "Inej, keep on eye on our new... crew member." Inej rolled her eyes lightly in annoyance as she turned to glare at the said man who was sitting on the couch. "Y/N... keep an eye on Inej."
You raised an eyebrow, "I don't know... I'm sure this guy will be alright with her alone," you said jokingly.
"Better not, she's calmer with you around," Kaz said.
"Uh, where you going?" you asked quietly as you followed him to the stairs.
Kaz stopped and turned to the side, looking at you, "I'm going to make sure Inej is coming with us."
With that said, he turned and walked down the stairs. You glanced to your side as Jesper stepped out and followed down the stairs after Kaz, giving you a small smile and a wink as he walked past you.
You stepped back into the room and closed the door. You turned and immediately felt the tension. You stepped to Inej's side, she was staring at the Conductor with a glare.
This is... Awkward...
You cleared your throat and walked around her to sit on the single couch.
This will take a while...
--
After Kaz and Jesper finally got back, Kaz had informed that Inej will be coming along, to your and Inej's relief.
Arken Visser aka the Conductor, had sputtered and sobbed that he was a mere man who wished to help Grisha forced to fight in the war, nothing more and nothing less… But you wondered just how he had gotten there, and how he had known the men that Inej sought out.
Kaz immediately got you all out of the room and to your surprise and nervousness, you were forced into a small space carriage with everyone, luckily for you, you got the seat next to the door with sitting beside Inej.
Inej, seeing on your body language that you were uneasy, had grabbed your hand in hers and gave it a light squeeze. You glanced at her and gave her a small thankful smile.
As you and your group bounced along the bumpy cobble road within the snug carriage on your route to a place called Novokribirsk, you kept glancing outside.
Finally, after a long silent trip, Kaz spoke to the Conductor, "I didn't hire you simply to get us across the Fold. You're with us because you smuggle Grisha out of the Little Palace, and that's the location of our target."
"Sun Summoner," Inej said. Kaz rolled his eyes, "Alleged."
Inej gave him a look, "They wouldn't keep a fraud in the most secure location in all of Ravka."
Kaz moved his eyes forward at the Conductor, "You said you have a contact who can get us inside. A Heartrender." The Conductor hummed, nodding. "How do I know we can trust her?"
"Nina grew up there."
"Most Grisha grew up in the Little Palace," Kaz said, "Very few would betray their general, and fewer still would help foreigners kidnap their most prized possession."
"Nina's a radical," the Conductor said, "Thinks Grisha should get to choose if they serve the Crown. She despises involuntary service more than she does Fjerdans."
She sounds lovely.
"Can't wait to meet her, she sounds lovely," you said with a small smirk as you looked over at Jesper, who smirked and nodded lightly.
"Oh, she is, I'm sure you all gonna like her," the Conductor agreed.
You hummed and looked back out the window.
It didn't take long now to reach to the Inn where Nina was staying. You let out a breath when you all got out and walked into the building. The Conductor and Kaz stepped to the counter where there was a rough-looking man grinning at a wad of foreign money within his hands.
After a few seconds, Kaz turned to you, Jesper and Inej and nodded before he and the Conductor took the led to the stairs. You followed behind them up to the third floor and to the further door to the left.
You saw the door was slightly open and Jesper walked in first, his gun in hand. You all walked inside and saw no one was there, but there was a mess.
Nina's suitcase was still spread upon the bed and overflowing with various silks, velvets and other decorated fabrics; clearly a woman who prized her looks. There was shattered glass by the side of the bed, and whilst the Heartrender could have knocked it over, there was a sprinkling of sharp glass on the side table too; it had likely been used as a weapon.
"She knew to expect us," the Conductor said.
"She isn't late," Kaz said, "She's gone."
"Yes, but her things are all--" the Conductor started but cut himself off when Kaz closed the suitcase and a silver wolf symbol was laying on the bed.
"What is it?" Jesper asked.
The Conductor quickly grabbed the symbol and stared at it in shock and concern, "Drüskelle. They are ruthless Grisha hunters."
"Explains the Fjerdan krydda the innkeeper was counting when we arrived," Kaz said as Inej peered out the balcony. "It's likely he ratted her out."
"She's probably captive on a ship to Fjerda by now."
Inej moved into the room, looking from you and Jesper to Kaz, "They had a clear line of attack."
"Take a look," Kaz said, "Make sure there aren't any more surprises." Inej pulled her hood up and left through the balcony.
"Well, that's that," the Conductor said as he sat down on the bed, "We've lost our way into the Little Palace."
You frowned and looked at Kaz to see he was thinking deep. "Let's go," he said after a moment as he walked past you. You and Jesper followed with the Conductor behind.
As soon as you got outside, Inej dropped down from the roof, "All clear."
"This seems like a reasonable juncture to abandon this whole Sun Summoner plan," the Conductor said.
Kaz stopped in his tracks, "Abandon?" He turned to the four of you, "We're in this now. And I know what a million Kruge means to me. What does it mean to you?"
You didn't really know how to answer that question...
"Freedom," Inej breathed out.
Jesper smirked, "Fun. Like, at least a few months." He looked at you with his charming smirk, "Maybe y/n and I can travel together, I could show you the whole world."
You smirked back at him as he wrapped his arm around your shoulder, "If I have to choose one person to travel with, it will be Inej." Inej smirked while Jesper pouted, "I thought we have a connection."
You hummed and looked at the Conductor when he answered Kaz, but you realized the boy was looking at you and Jesper with a glare, "Retirement."
Kaz quickly turn his glare from Jesper and looked at all of you, "Right, so we press on." He looked at the Conductor, "Get us across the Fold and I'll figure out the rest on the other side."
"Fine," the Conductor said and took out a small notepad, "To cross, I'll need 20 pounds of alabaster coal. A peck of Majdaloun jurda. Uh, not the kind from Kerch. It's too weak. And, uh..." He looked at Jesper up and down and then back at his notepad, "A goat."
You were a little confused by the goat part, so you leaned closer to Jesper and whispered, "Why do we need a goat?"
Jesper shrugged, not knowing either. You looked at Kaz to see he was a little confused too by the looks of his eyebrows only slightly frowning.
"Now, we meet in the dead of night," the Conductor said, ripping the note from the notepad, "There's a wreckage of a skiff northeast, on the edge of town. So, who gets what?"
Kaz thought for a second before answering, "Inej, jurda. Y/n and I will get the goat. And Jesper..." Jesper removed his arm from your shoulder as Kaz stepped closer and took the note from the Conductor. He held it to Jesper's face, giving him a look, "Just the coal, no detours."
