This is about Hindley:
«After a short suspense it was opened by a tall, gaunt man, without neckerchief, and otherwise extremely slovenly; his features were lost in masses of shaggy hair that hung on his shoulders; and his eyes, too, were like a ghostly Catherine’s, with all their beauty annihilated».
And this is about Heathcliff:
«a tall man dressed in dark clothes, with dark face and hair. He leant against the side, and held his fingers on the latch, as if intending to open for himself. “Who can it be?” I thought. “Mr. Earnshaw?”»
Heathcliff is the character most often described as tall (and altogether big), with Hindley also being described as tall, as well as Linton, Heathcliff’s son, being said he was tall for his age (which is fitting).
I find so juicy that Heathcliff and Hindley look somewhat alike, at least structure-wise, enough to make Nelly think for one moment Heathcliff could have been him, and scratch the idea because no, that's not Hindley's voice. You resemble the man who destroyed you. It goes both ways. His child looks like his sister. One could think it was her child instead. A stranger will think the boy your son. You'll smile at the irony.
#«“And this young man is—” / “Not my son assuredly!”#Heathcliff smiled again as if it were rather too bold a jest to attribute the paternity of that bear to him.»#I didn't remember Hareton being described as tall and for now indeed I can't find any mention hinting he was particularly tall#I did find this one line highlighted and what can I say I adore it#“How little did I dream that Hindley would ever make me cry so!” said by Cathy#I adore when little glimpses of the fact they were fond of each other show up#I also find this so funny: “the entrance of Heathcliff relieved me in some measure from my uncomfortable state”#Hilarious that everyone is so unlikeable Lockwood finds solace in Heathcliff’s presence. You must be the first lol#Of course it's in great part because of Heathcliff why they're like that#(although in Hareton's case it kinda seems he is mainly overall very jealous and tense; very reminiscent of kid Heathcliff)#Lockwood does notice something though. This is what he thinks when Heathcliff talks to Catherine:#“The tone in which the words were said revealed a genuine bad nature. I no longer felt inclined to call Heathcliff a capital fellow”#So interesting that Heathcliff’s vitriol is so clear that it makes Lockwood reevaluate#Really the second Catherine is the person whose existence grates more on Heathcliff’s nerve ugh#Super interesting considering how she is otherwise relatively harmless. She's no Hindley and yet. It makes all the sense though in some way#Good for her tbh haha#God I love this book beyond words#Anyway. Back on my point. Elordi would have made a very good Hindley#I talk too much#Wuthering Heights#Hindley Earnshaw#Heathcliff

One of my favorite things about Heartless is the whole murder, martyr, monarch, mad thing. It just gets fulfilled multiple times. Whether Marissa meant to write it that way or not, I think it is so cool.
First, just the progression of the story. Peter Peter becomes a murder when he makes Jest a martyr (who died for the ridiculous cause of saving Mary Ann), then Cath becomes the Queen of Hearts, and Hatta goes mad. Pretty simple. Pretty obvious.
BUT it also was not filled in order when you look at it from the standpoint of which characters were present to hear the prophecy. It still goes pretty much in order, with the exception of the murder since Raven does not kill Peter Petter until after all the others have been fulfilled.
My favorite though, is how Cath also fulfills it. She murdered Peter Peter’s wife who had become the Jaberwock, then she goes mad at the death of Jest. It isn’t the same way Hatta goes mad obviously since she is still pretty coherent when she speaks, but you really get to see it with her wild mood swings and the way she reacts to certain triggers. (Her reaction to seeing white roses and not wanting the reminder of Jest, etc.) Then she forces her way onto the throne and becomes the monarch. Lastly, she sacrifices her heart, sacrificing the thing that makes her the most human. In a sense, she died to bring justice to Jest.
I will never get over how much I love this book!

-jest
[pt: -jest /end pt]
The -jest suffix is a suffix that can be used for any part of identity as long as the intention is "because/when it's funny", "as a joke", etc. It can be used as a modifier for already existing labels or on its own as long as its for the sillies
Ex.
Chronojest(link), when one's age changes based on whatever is funniest. Girljest, when you only identify as a girl when it would be funny.
Flag stuff, symbol and disclaimer under the cut
[id: the first flag is a grayscale flag with 7 horizontal zig-zagging stripes. the outside stripes are the darkest, with them getting lighter towards the center. in the middle is a grey and white jester symbol with a two-toned hat ended in bells along with a frilly collar with bells at the end as well. there is white confetti in the background. /end id]
[id: the second flag is the same as first but without confetti /end id]
[id: the third flag is the same as second but with wavy stripes instead of zigzag /end id]
[id: the fourth flag is the same as third but with confetti /end id]

Jest and Catherine King and Queen of Hearts
Ending in which the King of Hearts dies at the claws of the Jabberwock shortly after marrying Catherine leaving her to rule Hearts and defeat the Jabberwock alongside Jest.
As for Jest he gets married to Catherine a while after she defeats the Jabberwock, making him the King of Hearts.
He doesn't die or go back to Chess. (It's complicated if I explain)

been a bit since i posted one of these, but here's my next drabble for @thedrabblecollective's drabble challenge! i used today's prompt, choice, although i actually wrote this before the month even began. once more i've chosen (heh) to write heartless fanfic... alice in wonderland and all of its adaptations have me in a chokehold right now. AND HATTA'S UNREQUITED LOVE OF JEST... you're gonna be seeing more stuff about that from me. ;) (as long as i don't find out they have an age gap, that is—jest and cath are already on thin ice.)
fandom: heartless (marissa meyer) characters: hatta (catherine pinkerton and jest are mentioned) relationships: hatta/jest (one-sided), catherine pinkerton/jest content warnings: none
~~~
Hatta knew it was over the moment Lady Pinkerton stepped through the door.
Despite what she said, Hatta knew the Sisters did not give warnings lightly. She had doomed them all by disregarding the Sisters’ advice.
Murderer, martyr, monarch, mad.
Hatta knew Jest, too. He knew Jest would always follow Lady Pinkerton, no matter the risks.
Murderer, martyr, monarch, mad.
Most of all, Hatta knew himself. He knew he’d always follow Jest.
Hatta laughed bitterly, alone in the empty Crossroads. They should’ve guarded their hearts better. Now Lady Pinkerton was the only one who ever really had a choice here.
I wish Heartless had a scene of Cath and Jest baking together, I feel like it could have brought so much to their connection and ours with the couple.
Imagine Cath bossing Jest around in the kitchen, them messing about
So I finished Heartless by Marissa Meyer a couple weeks ago and something I have been nonstop thinking about is Cath’s parents.
100%, I blame them for everything that happened, but they are just so interesting to me. They spend the first 90% of the book telling Cath what is best for her, but never truly listening when she tries to talk to them. Even her father, the one that was more open to her baking and recognized her talent for it and the joy it brought her, would not even CONSIDER the idea of her opening a bakery with a maid.
I kind of see where they were coming from. Their daughter was part of the gentry and would have no real concept of working her way through life. She also was seventeen, and few teenagers know what will actually bring them happiness, but they wouldn’t even let her try. They were forcing their dreams down her throat and ignoring how it was drowning her even though there were signs of it.
Cath hadn’t become cruel before she ran off with Jest, but you can see how she is starting to unravel into what will later make her the Queen of Hearts we all know and love. She stops holding back her thoughts, telling multiple people off, and generally just being grumpier.
Then everything falls completely apart and suddenly her parents are like “you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to”. To which she, rightfully so, tells them things could have been wildly different if they had thought to consider her actual happiness sooner.
To me, it really feels like they ignored the signs and with the gift of hindsight, realized their dreams were genuinely not going to make Cath happy, so they try to back peddle not realizing it is far too late for that. Cath’s reputation has cut Mary Ann out of her life. Cath’s reputation is so far gone, bakery would never succeed. Jest is dead. She has nothing left that brought her joy.
So, yeah. Her parents drove me crazy, but their reactions at the end of the book were just so amazingly blind to me.
