Joel Martinez (Civil War) x Original Female Character
prompt: "We're gonna be okay."
She woke to gunfire in the dead of night. She bolted upright in the back of the press van, immediately casting around for Joel. He wasn’t in the front seat where he had been sleeping all week on the road. She peered out the window, expecting to see him crouching against the wall of the burned-out school where they had parked, watching for soldiers. But he wasn't.
“Fuck.”
The gunfire broke out again and she flinched, ducking down in the back of the van. She didn’t think her heart had ever beat this fast. She grabbed her helmet and flak jacket with PRESS emblazoned on the front, throwing them on as the gunfire rattled in her ears.
“Fuck fuck fuck.”
Then the van door flew open and Joel threw himself inside, breathless.
“Oh Jesus, Joel,” she said.
“It’s okay,” he said. He was panting and there was a sheen of sweat on his brow, but his eyes were alight with excitement. “It’s our guys.”
“I heard returning fire.”
“It’s a long way off. They’re just scaring up the rabble. I told them we were here.”
At the next spurt of gunfire, they both flinched. Joel grinned.
“Were you sleeping in this?” he said, touching her helmet lightly. He started to take it from her head but she jerked back. His grin faded as he looked at her more closely, the fear widening her eyes.
“Hey, it’s okay. Really— listen.”
Silence. The gunfire had faded. Joel reached out carefully and lifted the helmet from her head. He eyed the flak jacket but she drew her arms around herself. They shared a long look.
“Want a cigarette?” he said.
She nodded. He grabbed a pack from the front seat and fished a lighter from his jeans. When she took the cigarette from him, her hands were shaking so badly that she dropped it.
“I didn’t know where the fuck you were,” she said, voice trembling.
“I’m sorry. I went out to smoke when it started. I didn’t want to wake you. Sleep is hard to come by.”
He nodded at her flak jacket.
“Let’s take that off. It won’t do much good if they come up on us at close range anyway.”
Slowly she relaxed her arms and allowed him to undo the velcro at her sides, lifting the jacket over her head.
“There. Maybe now we can both get back to sleep.”
“There’s no way I’m fucking sleeping tonight.”
“I have plenty of ways to help with that.”
She rolled her eyes.
“I’m not taking your drugs, Joel.”
He looked across the darkness at her and she could see he wasn’t smiling anymore. The sodium vapor lights from outside glinted in his eyes.
“There might come a time when you won’t be able to function without them,” he said quietly.
The adrenaline was leaving her system and to her surprise she felt her body grow heavy with weariness. Joel could see it happening.
“Go ahead and sleep,” he said. “I’ll stay up a while if it makes you feel better.”
She nodded, lying down atop her sleeping back with a t-shirt crumpled under her as a pillow; she couldn’t remember if it was hers or Joel’s. The familiar smell of smoke and whiskey filled the van, calming her system. At least she knew where he was. He was close now. She closed her eyes.
Gunfire again. Closer this time. She shot awake but this time Joel was there, peering out the window. He grinned over at her.
“It’s okay,” he said.
But there was something off in his smile. They could hear voices in the distance now. She looked at Joel to see how scared he was, but he appeared oddly relaxed.
“What’s going on?” she whispered.
There was something vacant in Joel's eyes as he gazed out the window.
“It’s never going to stop,” he said, his voice low and even. “This is how it’s going to be from now on. You never know when it’s going to come.”
There was a lull in gunfire while he spoke but it rang out again and she flew to Joel’s side. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tightly against his body. The smell of alcohol hit her and then she knew why he seemed so calm.
“Shh,” he said, his voice a lull. “It’s okay. We’re gonna be okay.”
With her head against his chest, she feel hear his heart hammering. He held her tighter, rocking slightly back and forth as he stroked her hair.
“Joel.”
When she looked up at him, she saw the first glint of fear in his eyes and her stomach sank. His silver flask was sticking out of his pocket and she slipped it out. He watched as she tipped it back, wiped her mouth with her sleeve and passed it back to him. He turned it up and drained it.
Joel gazed at her for a long moment then stroked her face with the back of his hand. It was shaking slightly. She took it and held it against her face, feeling its warmth, the only thing grounding her in this dark reality. He closed his eyes at her touch.
“Joel,” she murmured again.
“Yeah.”
“We’re gonna be okay.”
He nodded, opening his eyes slightly, glazed with drink and fear and something else. Then he took her face gently in both hands and leaned forward, kissing her as if he had all the time in the world. She could taste the alcohol on him, smell the cigarette smoke on his clothes. He moved his lips slowly over hers, and she forgot for a moment that they were in the midst of a war that would never leave them. He was there, she knew, but part of him was far away, perhaps gone forever. For a moment she didn't know who it was that was kissing her, but the warmth and the smell of him was so familiar and comforting that she dared not question it.
Joel pulled back and looked at her, still cradling her face in his hands.
“I believe you.”

Love the Joel fic!!! plsssss do an Arthur cramps one!!!

Moon Cycle — Arthur Morgan x F!Reader
A/N: I loved writing this! It's my first time writing anything that's not set in the present world so please bare with me <3 And yes, the title is a reference to Melanie Martinez's song :) As always, thank you for your requests and I hope you love it!
Summary: Even when you try to act tough, Arthur Morgan always sees right through you. And, the day you finally allow yourself to feel weak, he's there to help you with your cramps.
Tags: Fluff! A LOT OF FLUFF. High honor Arthur. Self-deprecating Arthur, we all know how he talks to himself. Mentions of his past (Eliza and Mary Linn), reader has a uterus and is menstruating, she doesn't wear the typical clothes that women used in the 1800's (think of it more like Sadie, she dresses like her). This is set before Arthur even knows he's sick.
Word count: 7.8k

Since day one, you had never failed to amaze the whole Van Der Linde gang with your dirty mouth and ways of pissing off Miss Grimshaw. To say the least, they had grown fond of you. And even if you could look after yourself just fine, you laid awake in your cot endless nights just wishing someone was there for you in times where you felt the most vulnerable, needing attention like the dog the gang had adopted. He always ran around, sniffing everyone and looking for any hand that would give him back scratches.
One particular day you had gone out to rob a stagecoach that a guy in Rhodes had told you about. Dutch assigned you to go along with Arthur, the gruff looking, almost giant man. But you knew he hid something else behind his blue-green eyes that often held a hint of tenderness whenever he looked your way.
"Now, stay right behind me, princess."
He muttered as he covered his face behind the rock you were prompted at, making sure the drivers didn't see you.
You groaned. Of course that, out of all of the women in camp, he would call you princess. But he didn't do it for the reasons you thought.
"Call me by my name, Morgan."
You muttered and he let out a deep chuckle, rumbling through his chest and sending butterflies to your stomach. But you wouldn't let your face show that, after all, you kinda liked being called princess by him.
The stagecoach robbery was a success, feeling like a breath of fresh air after what seemed like the gang had been cursed or just ran out of good luck.
Arthur counted the money effortlessly, the flicking of his fingers looking elegant. It was ridiculous, you thought as he you waited for your part.
"Don't forget to give some to camp, princess."
He said, pointing a finger at you. But he knew not to worry about you contributing to the little box Dutch had beside his tent, he had seen you do it more times than anyone else in the gang.
"You don't need to worry about me contributing, Arthur."
You said with a soft smile as you both rode back to camp, side by side, enjoying the nice weather and the views.
—
Later that day, you were sitting up against a log in front of the campfire. A bead of sweat fell down the side of your face and into your shirt. Arthur was going to tease you about it, but he held himself back when he saw the slight frown on your face and your knees being held against your chest.
He sighed, knowing that caring about you wasn't the best decision. He couldn't bring himself to like anyone else, not after Eliza and Mary. But that soft, empathetic part of him was stronger than any of his insecurities, and it needed to know if you were okay. Which you clearly weren't.
He slowly sat down beside you with a look of concern on his face, and placed his calloused hand on your shoulder.
"You alright, princess? Did you get hurt? You should've told me—"
"I didn't get hurt."
You interrupted him. You were about to snap at him for teasing you, but when you looked into his eyes, glowing by the fire crackling in front of you, you noticed he was being genuine. So your expression softened, and he saw it, making his heart flutter and long to open up to you more.
"I'm.. I have cramps. It's that time of the month.."
You spoke quietly. You had grown to know it wasn't okay to talk about it, let alone tell a man about it. They found it disgusting, a woman bleeding monthly was seen almost as a sin, something you couldn't talk about.
But Arthur couldn't care less. He had killed people and had seen countless bodies, massacred by some fool. Hell, he'd seen his son be born. He could handle speaking about a monthly small amount of blood coming out of a woman's body naturally.
"I understand. Is there anything I can do for you?"
He asked, and your eyebrows shot up in surprise. Why wasn't he acting disgusted by what you just said? Why didn't he tell you to just suck it up?
It took you a few seconds to answer.
"I—Uhm.. I don't know, actually. Can you help me get to my tent? I think I might've stained my clothes and I don't wanna get teased about it."
You spoke, your eyes darted towards the fire once again. It was fine if he declined, you would understand. But, once again, he surprised you.
"Yeah, let's go."
He said and wrapped his arm around your shoulder, helping you up. He looked behind his shoulder to make sure no one was paying attention to see the small stain in your pants, and led you to your tent.
"I've heard.."
He cleared his throat before speaking, the slight pink tint on his cheeks gave away the soft embarrassment he felt.
"I've heard that peppermint or chamomile tea helps, the ladies were talking about it the other day."
He said and you couldn't help but smile softly.
"Yeah, it does. I just ran out of both herbes."
At that, he raised an eyebrow. Why didn't you tell him? He would've gone looking for some if it brought you comfort. And, against his better judgement, he chose to speak.
"You should've told me. I'll make sure to bring you some."
He spoke gruffly, but unable to hide his growing softness and tenderness for you.
When he helped you into your cot, he made sure to cover you with a blanket before turning on his heels to go away. He figured you might want to be left alone.
"Wait."
You called out to him. You knew better than to call over a man who wouldn't hesitate to put a bullet between anyone's eyes, but a part of you knew he only did it when absolutely necessary. And that he would never, ever touch a hair on your body.
"Can you.. stay a little while?"
You asked, your cheeks turning a cute rosey shade. At that, he gave you a light chuckle.
"Yeah, 'course."
He sat down on the edge of your cot. You could see the sympathetic look in his eyes when your face would scrunch up every time a cramp hit harder.
"I'm not usually like this, I can take the pain—"
"No need to explain to me. I know it hurts and I don't need you to act tough all the time."
He cut you off, easing some of the embarrassment you felt. Maybe it was stress, maybe your hormones were fighting against you, but this cycle felt different. It hurt a lot more, making you sweat as you tried to deal with the pain.
The tension between the both of you only continued to grow, hidden desires behind your eyelids that none of you could speak about. Heartbreaks and loss were two things you were too familiar with, and couldn't bring yourself to experience once again.
So he didn't speak as he laid beside you, carefully, treating you as if you were made out of porcelain and he didn't want to hurt you. His hand went to your lower stomach and began moving it gently, massaging the zone.
You let out a sigh of relief—how did he know exactly what to do? As if reading your thoughts, he spoke:
"Mary told me this works. I didn't figure it out on my own."
He spoke quietly, and you felt kinda bad. How could she be such a fool to break up with such a kind man?
"Even if you didn't figure it out on your own, I'm grateful you know about it."
You spoke softly.
"Can I tell you something, Arthur?"
You asked, you heart pounding in your chest as if it wanted out just to be gifted to Arthur.
"'Course, princess."
He responded, his hand never stopped moving as he saw the look of relief in your face. A hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his lips when he noticed it was working.
"You're a good man. And anyone who doesn't see that, is a fool. A damn, blind fool."
You spoke and his eyes widened at that, letting you take in more of the particular color they had. You were so close to him yet none of you could move.
"I ain't much of a good person, princess. I've done things I'm not proud of, killed folks just because.. There's a price on my head."
He said, looking at you with that self-deprecating look he gave anyone who even dared to call him good. He wasn't good, he was a fool who didn't know how to be kind, how to be good. Or at least, that was what he thought of himself.
But on the contrary, you didn't see him that way, and he knew. So you doubled down, going along with your stubborn nature.
"Well, to me you are good. And nothing will change my mind about that."
You spoke in a firmer tone, placing a hand on top of his shoulder and rubbing it softly. He swore you could feel the way his heart jumped at your small gesture.
After a few minutes of just contemplating each other's faces, trying to read each other's minds, he spoke.
"You deserve someone better than me."
At that, you frowned. He couldn't tell you what you deserved and what you didn't, who you could or couldn't like.
"No one has ever cared about my cramps before. No one... No man has taken the time to try and make me feel better."
His expression softened. How could anyone treat you badly about something that wasn't your fault? But again, he reminded himself, it was 1899. You didn't live in a fair world.
"I couldn't just let you be in pain."
"Exactly."
You said. Everything he did or said was just another reason as to why you considered him a good man. After fighting against your fears, your mind, your insecurities, you leaned slightly closer. What were you doing? You didn't know. But the sight of his lips covered by his always perfectly trimmed moustache was something almost magnetic that pulled at your heartstrings right when you were the most vulnerable and needy.
"Princess..."
He tried to protest. His breathing hitched as he felt you slightly closer, his eyes kept darting towards your plush lips without even thinking. His heart thumped against his chest in a way that almost hurt.
"Do you trust me?"
His eyes shot up at yours. Of course he trusted you, even if a part of his brain begged him not to, he wasn't doing what his brain wanted. He was following his heart at this point, and his heart wanted you. Only you.
"I do."
He responded, his deep voice was now soft.
"Then.. Let me."
You whispered and pressed your lips against his, without giving your brain the possibility to make you think about it twice. You stayed still as you waited for him to pull away, to shut you down and never talk to you again.
But he kissed you back. He kissed you back, and his hand tangled on your hair as he did. Every move, every action was so gentle, so careful. And you couldn't be more grateful for that.
His other hand never left your lower stomach. He was determined to end with your cramps, even if his own hand ended up cramping after massaging your skin for so long.
He didn't leave your side that night. If anything, the whole situation only brought the two of you closer, to the point where he would look for excuses to sleep with you all curled up against him. His arm wrapped around your waist, holding your frame up against his chest. All while keeping a soft smile on his face even when he slept.
Because what started with the two of you being scared of letting anyone else in, ended up with Arthur going out of his way to look for anything that would relieve your pain. He would even ride his horse for hours until he found peppermint.
But in the end: all you wanted was the warmth his body provided you with and his hand pressed against your skin.

Something in the Orange
Pairing: Joel Miller x art teacher!reader
Author's note: this might become a mini series idk idk
Summary: A parent-teacher conference leads to trouble [4.0k]
Warnings: no outbreak! au, teacher things, Ellie being a little loner, Joel the Menace making a return, Joel gets both his daughters in this one because it's what he deserves, flirty flirt, i think that's it???

You feel like you've been running a million miles a minute since you got in this morning. The second you could unlock the door, at least three students spilled into your room and chaotically ran to the kiln to collect their most recent pottery projects. One of them ended up shattering (the exact one you warned Colin about, but he didn't listen), and, as per high school custom, they were all screaming about it. You consoled the students just in time for your principal to walk by and ask about lesson plans which made you scramble through your backpack for your notebook even though you knew damn well there wasn't a single lesson plan in there. "Do you always have those lights on?" Principal Martinez asked, gesturing to the room's fairy lights and orange lamps. Leave it to administration to want to avoid art classrooms so much that they don't even know about the Big Light Philosophy.
Since then, it's been class after class. You only have one more period before your planning period and then, finally, the end of the day. There are a hundred things to do, but you can't focus on any of them. You got so caught up in managing your classroom and helping students with the hardest parts of their portfolio work that you almost forgot you had a parent meeting scheduled during your planning period.
Calling in parents for meetings about their children may be your least favorite part of your job. It makes you feel like a bad teacher, and parents usually don't feel great about getting called in on a workday to talk about their kid. Luckily, Ellie's dad, Joel, seemed more than happy to take time to talk about her. You rack your mind for his occupation as you add some detail to a canvas you've been hiding in your office and working on when you can. Was he a blue-collar worker? Or was he another stuck-up Austin transplant parent who's gonna accuse you of lying? He'd make the fifth parent who's made you cry this semester.
A knock on your locked door pulls you from your thoughts, and you quickly put away your painting before answering the door. "I told you she was in here!" One of your students, Dina, announces as she and a posse of three other kids you don't recognize push their way into the room. "Miss, you've gotta take that thing off your door; otherwise, people are gonna think you went home!"
"You mean the sign that says, 'planning period. Do not enter?'" You ask, and she snaps her fingers.
"That's the one." She says as she and her friends start putting their backpacks down at one of your high tables. You sigh and kick the door stopper into the threshold.
"You guys can't stay here. I have a meeting in five minutes."
"With who?"
"None of your business."
"Miss!" Dina acts wounded, and you cross your arms over your chest, your keys jingling around your neck in the process.
"I am an adult with a college degree and the debt to show for it. You are a teenager with a still-developing brain. You have to listen to me," you say. "Wait, whose class are you supposed to be in right now?"
"Mr. Flynn's."
"Guys!" You groan before walking over to your desk and quickly writing up a hall pass for them. "I know you don't like math-"
"No, we don't like Mr. Flynn." Dina cuts you off.
"Or math!" One of her friends adds, and you shoot them a (loving) disapproving look.
"Whatever you don't like, you can't keep hiding out here. Mr. Flynn is two seconds away from trying to get me fired for how often I let his kids in here during class, and I actually like this job, so," you rip the hall pass off the pad and hand it to Dina. As they pack their stuff up, a tall, bearded man steps into your classroom and makes eye contact with you. "Out, out, out! I love you. You're gonna change the world one day, but please get out." You blow them kisses as you usher them out of the room.
"Are you Ellie's art teacher?" He asks, a confused look on his face, and you nod.
"Yes, I am. Sorry about that. They're still figuring out that I have work to get done even when I don't have a class," you explain, a little breathless from running all over the place and getting caught off-guard. You really do try to act a little more professional with parents, but the kids threw you off. The kettle whistling behind your desk doesn't make it any better. "Is there anything I can get you? Coffee? Tea?" You pick up a random mug off your desk but find it full of murky water. "Paint water?"
"Are you allowed to have an electric kettle in here?" He asks, and you laugh nervously as you find a clean mug and your tea box.
"I won't tell if you won't." You say. He stands there awkwardly as you pour yourself some tea, and you realize you didn't pull a chair up for him. "Um, we can sit..." you glance around your messy classroom until you find a clear table and gesture toward it. "Here." He follows your lead, and you take a deep breath as you sit down.
"You gonna be okay?" He asks, the hint of a smirk on his lips. His curly hair looks golden brown in the low light, and his round eyes have a little knowing twinkle. You take another breath to compose yourself and nod.
"Yes. Sorry. It's been a long day."
"Don't worry bout it. I'm sure they run you ragged."
"Is it that obvious?"
"Well, you do have paint in your hair." He says, and panic seizes in your chest. You're never more aware of how crazy your job can be until you meet Real Adults. Even if you can't remember what he does for a living, you still have to admit that you look a little silly next to each other: you, with your paint-stained sunflower dress and markered hands, and him, with his black shirt and jeans. He doesn't have any apparent stains or splatters on his clothes, but he's broad with thick biceps. He must work with his hands or something within that capacity. You clear your throat and try to get back on track with the meeting.
"Uh, so Mr. Miller, the reason I called you here today was to talk to you about Ellie," you start. "First, I just wanna say that she is an amazing student. She always does her work and engages thoughtfully with the material. I really do enjoy having her in class."
"Well, that's certainly good to hear. She talks a whole lot bout this class and you, so... it's nice to place a face to the name," he says, adjusting his position on the stool. "But I have a feelin' you didn't call me down here just to tell me how great my kid is."
"She is great. She's extremely talented, smart, and funny, but she spends more time in my classroom during lunch than anything else. I'm worried about her making friends and finding a community here at school. I've tried convincing her to join the art club, but she's hesitant. During class, she just sits with her headphones in and draws. She really doesn't like talking to anybody but me." You wait for blame to be assigned to you or get lectured, but it never comes. He just sighs, and he deflates a little in his chair.
"She's been through a lot this year. Well, her whole life, really, but 'specially recently," he says dejectedly. "What can I do for her?"
"There's an art show this Friday night here at the school. It'll all be student work from across the district. I thought if maybe you or... whatever adults she has at home came with her to this, she might feel more comfortable talking to her peers or even want to submit some of her own stuff."
"We can do that. I'll get off work early and ask her uncle if he wants to come," he's quick with his solution, and you're a little shocked. You rarely get parents, let alone fathers, who act this swiftly when something is going on with their kids. "Is there anythin' else goin' on that I should know bout?"
"Uh, no. Like I said, she's a great kid. You should be really proud." You say, and the concerned wrinkle between his eyebrows disappears with a proud smile.
"Thank you," he mumbles, suddenly shy. "And thanks for carin' so much bout her. It's nice to know she's got someone lookin' out for her here." You don't know what to say, so you just nod and stare at him. You know, like an idiot. It takes a chuckle from him to snap you out of your thoughts, and blood rushes to your cheeks.
"Yes, of course. She's a good kid." You say.
"You said that already."
"I bet you'd be a little scatterbrained if you were at the mercy of two hundred teenagers all day."
"You're absolutely right. I would be," he says, smirking devastatingly. "Someone ought to get you a coffee or somethin' if you're dealing with all that."
"People like you should go argue with the school board. I'm sure you'd be popular with all the teachers."
"That'd be a first. I think I might've been the least favorite parent for all of my girls' teachers."
"Well, I find that hard to believe."
"Yeah?" He asks, leaning forward just a little, and you nod, smiling. Your brain struggles to come up with something to say, and you're a little embarrassed at your silence, but luckily, your projector saves the day by buzzing loudly and making the picture on the board cut in and out. You mumble a quick apology before getting up and climbing up on a desk to jiggle a piece back into place. You hear Joel curse behind you, and when you turn to see what the problem is, you see him holding his arms out behind you. "Do you stand on desks often?"
"Only every day. I haven't fallen yet this year." You laugh at his exasperated expression and turn back to the projector. It's still making a weird noise, so you move it around a little more, moving the desk under your feet, and Joel stabilizes it with a sigh.
"How long has it been doin' that?"
"Couple months. I keep putting in maintenance requests, but nobody ever comes to fix it."
"I can fix it for ya," he says simply, and you look down at him. "I've got tools in my truck. It wouldn't take long at all."
"Really?" You ask, and he nods.
"It'd make me feel better knowin' you're not almost breakin' your neck every day."
"You mean, standing on a decades-old desk to mess with an ancient piece of equipment isn't OSHA compliant?"
"Please," he says, grabbing your ankle when the desk wobbles under you, and you laugh at his worry. "Let me fix it for you before you give me a heart attack." You think about declining and just putting in another work order, but the likelihood that anyone would actually come and fix it is slim to none. Plus, you really shouldn't be climbing on top of desks every day. You pretend to think it over for a few more seconds just to watch the worry play across his features as his grip on your ankle gets tighter.
"Only if you really mean it."
"I really mean it," he says, offering you his other hand. "Now, would you please get down?"
"Fine." You say and take his hand. You bend to safely get yourself down, but Joel moves his other hand from your ankle to your waist and basically hoists you to the ground. Once your feet touch the floor, he doesn't let you go immediately like he's trying to figure out if you somehow got hurt when he wasn't looking. There's a part of your brain that's aware of how inappropriate this would look to any passersby, but you're also highly aware of how warm his big hand is on your hip.
"Ya alright?" He asks softly, and you nod, taking a conscious step back from his arms.
"Yes, thank you."
"Good," he says, also taking a step back. "Let me go get my tools, and I'll get that fixed for you."
"Perfect. I'll be here." You stand there, staring at each other awkwardly, for another moment before he turns on his heels and walks out of the classroom. The second he's out of your line of sight, you bury your head in your hands and start silently freaking out.
What the fuck are you doing? How did a parent-teacher meeting turn into him hauling you off a desk and offering to fix your projector? Technically, nothing incriminating has happened, and it needs to stay that way. It doesn't matter if you think he's attractive or like how he worries about everything. He's Ellie's dad. Teachers have gotten fired for much less than this, and you're not willing to risk your career because of one guy.
When he gets back with his toolbox, you're sitting at your desk and sorting through assignments like a reasonable adult. He doesn't say anything as he climbs up on the same desk you were standing on and begins messing with the mechanics of the equipment. You each work in silence for a few minutes before a screw clatters to the ground, and he grumbles something under his breath. "Do you mind..." he starts, pointing toward the lost piece.
"Not at all." You cover your anxiety with your chipper teacher voice and search for the screw with your phone flashlight. You find it tucked between canvases, carefully pick it up, and walk over to where he's standing, waiting for him to be ready for it.
"It looks like it's just an old piece in here. I'm sure you can order a new one, and I can come back and install it if ya want," he explains, looking down at you. You probably look stupid just standing there with a tiny screw in your hand, but he doesn't laugh. "D'you mind handing me that tool to your right?" He asks, and you blindly reach for the tool you think he's talking about. "Your other right." He corrects, and you flush in embarrassment.
"Sorry. I never was a very good woodshop student." You say, and he laughs once he has the tool in hand.
"My girls are the same way. Just askin' ‘em to hold a flashlight while I work on their car is like pullin' teeth," he says fondly. "Speaking of which, is there a reason the lights aren't on in here?"
"The lamp light is less harsh, and it helps students focus. Plus, nobody likes coming into a bright classroom first thing in the morning." You explain, and he hums.
"If I'd had a teacher like you growing up, I would've been at school much more than I was."
"You didn't like school?"
"Hated it," he says, opening his hand for the screw. Once you drop the tiny thing into his large palm, he straightens up, and you can barely hear it going back into its rightful place. "'S a miracle I graduated."
"That was me in college."
"Now, I don't believe that for a second."
"Really?" You laugh, and he nods.
"Someone like you, with your pretty dresses and all that empathy, was meant to be a teacher."
"I wasn't always like this," you evade the compliment despite the butterflies in your stomach. "Being a teacher was never on my radar until I graduated. A lot of my life was never on my radar until then." He puts the hood of the projector back on and climbs down from the desk until he's standing in front of you again, wiping his hands on a red handkerchief from his toolbox.
"Well, with the way you carry yourself, I never woulda guessed." He says. He opens his mouth to say something more, but the sharp tone of the bell ringing cuts him off. You jump at the sound and look at the clock as if it were wrong.
"I'm so sorry. Time must've gotten away from me. Thank you so much again, Mr. Miller, for coming in to talk with me and looking at the projector. I hope to see you and Ellie on Friday." You say quickly as the sound of rowdy kids fills the hallway, and you hold your hand out to him. He takes it and squeezes it firmly.
"You can call me Joel. Mr. Miller makes me feel old." He says, and you smile. He doesn't look old, unlike the other dads you've encountered. Sure, he's got some gray at his temples and in his beard, but it suits him.
"Joel, it is then." You resolve. His hand lingers in yours for a little too long before finally pulling away. "Well, Joel, unless you want to elbow through teenagers, I'd suggest you hide out here for a few more minutes." He does happily, even helping you carry supplies to your car once the hallways have cleared out enough. He's a proper gentleman, slinging your backpack over his shoulder and opening doors for you. You part only once everything is in your trunk, and he bids you goodnight with a charming smile that fills your thoughts on your drive home.
Ellie surprises you the next day as you're setting up the classroom. Normally, she isn't in until right before the bell rings, so seeing her this early is a little bit of a shock. The ink staining her hands is not. "Hey, dude. What's going on?" You ask. "Did you get breakfast from the cafeteria today? I heard Mrs. Hodges has those French toast sticks that everyone loves. You can probably get two servings if you run."
"No, I already ate. My dad and uncle had to leave early this morning, so we got breakfast. Speaking of which," she says as she takes off her backpack and pulls a cup of iced coffee out of her water bottle pocket. "This is for you. We didn't know what you liked, so we got a vanilla latte or something."
"Oh, El! You didn't have to do that. Thank you, honey." You say, and she sets it on your desk for you to enjoy once you don't have paintbrushes in hand. "If this is your way of getting a good grade on your piece, I already told you that you have nothing to worry about."
"It wasn't my idea. It was my dad's." She says nonchalantly before moving to the back of the classroom to get her sketch book. You, however, are confused and secretly pleased that Joel thought of you when he didn't have to. You find a message scribbled on the side when you reach for the cup to take a sip.
Thanks again. See you Friday. -J
You turn to hide your smile from Ellie, but she's so deep in her work that you doubt she would've noticed anyway. You put some music on, and you and Ellie work silently on your projects until the bell rings and the day starts.
The rest of the week goes by without a hitch, meaning that nobody accidentally ingested paint, and you only had to have one Come to Jesus talk with your Art 1 class. When Friday night rolls around, you're excited to see all the students work and treat yourself by wearing a new shirt with black scribbles all over it and black dress pants. You figure you should look as art teachery as possible for an art teacher event.
By the time you get to the school, the hallways are buzzing with students dragging their parents from one piece to another and administrators praising their art programs even though you know not one of them has seen the inside of an art classroom in months. You make small talk with some of your students and their parents before finding a way out of the conversation and letting yourself wander through the makeshift gallery. You love your kids, but you really don't want them breathing down your neck as you look at all the art. You're almost at the end when you hear a familiar voice calling your name, and you turn to find Ellie walking toward you with Joel and, who you assume to be her uncle, next to her.
"Hey, kid! I'm so happy to see you here!" You say sincerely, and she smiles shyly. You turn to her uncle and hold your hand out to introduce yourself.
"Tommy. We sure have heard a whole lot bout you at home." He says with a smirk, and you laugh.
"All good things, I hope."
"Of course. Ellie just bout worships the ground you walk on," he says. "Joel was singin' your praises, too."
"Alright, I think that's enough. Why don't y'all go walk around, and I'll catch up with ya?" He suggests, and Tommy chuckles. Another teacher calls Ellie's name from down the hallway, and she's quick to drag Tommy off to meet him, leaving you and Joel alone. He's replaced his black shirt with a light blue dress shirt, and it looks like he's recently trimmed his beard. He looks nice.
"Singing praises, huh?" You raise your eyebrows at him, and he smiles sheepishly. "Thank you for the coffee the other morning, by the way. It was a really nice surprise."
"Figured it was the least I could do to thank you for takin' such good care of my girl."
"Well, thank you. I owe you."
"You don't owe me a thing," he says. "Although, Tommy was a little upset that I didn't bill you for lookin' at the projector."
"Was he?" You ask, and he nods.
"Oh, yeah," he laughs. "Said next time I should, at least, ask you on a date."
"Mr. Miller-"
"I thought you agreed to call me Joel." He raises his eyebrows in a silent challenge, and you shake your head, fighting a smile.
"Joel, while I'm flattered by the offer from someone so handsome-"
"You think I'm handsome?"
"I can't date my students' parents." You say, ignoring his question, but even then, the playful look on his face doesn't fade. "Well, I can leave you to it. I know Ellie will probably want to show you around."
"Right. Of course," he says. "It's really nice to see you."
"You, too. I'm just glad I didn't have paint in my hair this time."
"I don't know. I thought it was kinda cute." You feel yourself blush at his words, but you have to shut it down before it can become anything more than flattery. You take a deep breath and try not to let that stupid smirk weaken your knees as he watches you.
"Goodnight, Joel."
"Goodnight, ma'am." He says, tipping his head politely before sauntering down the hallway like he owns the place. Trouble, you think to yourself. But you can handle trouble. It's in your job description, for Christ's sake.
So, you brush off the flirting and try to ignore how his kindness and sweet words made you feel. You absolutely cannot flirt with the parent of one of your students. Dating is completely off the table. You can handle this like an adult. You have to.
After a cold shower and a leftover dinner, you check your email once more before going to bed that night. Sitting in your inbox with alarming clarity is an email from Ellie with the subject line: Art Club. Her email is somehow just as short as her subject line.
Simply, "When can I start -E."

Teacher’s Pet
Pairing: Javier Peña x Reader
Word Count: 1924 | requests are open (send requests, I will gladly answer them all)
Pedro Pascal Masterlist
request:Hii i have another idea! Could you maybe write this about Joel or Peña, where the reader has a student-teacher relationship with either one of them. Maybe based of the song “Teacher Pet” by Melanie Martinez.
I still remember the first time I walked into Professor Peña’s lecture hall—a mix of anticipation and nerves that made my heart pound erratically. The room was dimly lit by the early morning sun streaming through tall windows, and the scent of old books and chalk filled the air. Javier Peña, with his sharp features and a gaze that could both intimidate and reassure, stood at the front, his presence commanding every ounce of attention.
“Good morning, class,” he said, his deep voice echoing slightly off the walls. “Today, we’re going to explore the complexities of law and morality—two forces that, more often than not, collide in the real world.”
I couldn’t help but lean forward, not just to catch every word, but because something about him pulled me in like a magnet. I was his student—a fact that filled me with both excitement and trepidation. For weeks, I’d stayed after class, lingering near the door, hoping for a brief moment alone with him, a chance to ask a question or simply share a smile. And slowly, those fleeting moments began to accumulate into something far more intense than I ever anticipated.
After class one humid afternoon, as students began to shuffle out, I found myself alone with him by the blackboard. He was scribbling notes, and the soft scratch of chalk on slate was almost hypnotic.
“Professor Peña?” I ventured, my voice small. “I… I was wondering if you could help me understand the concept of moral relativism a bit better. It’s been on my mind, and I can’t seem to shake it.”
He turned, his eyes meeting mine with a curious intensity that made me blush. “Of course, y/n,” he said, using my initials as if they were a secret code between us. “Sit down. Let’s discuss it.” His invitation was warm, and I couldn’t help but feel that perhaps this was the beginning of something unexpected.
I sat on the edge of the desk, my pulse quickening as he moved to stand beside me. “You see,” he began, his tone soft yet authoritative, “moral relativism isn’t about having no morals at all—it’s about understanding that our perceptions of right and wrong are shaped by our experiences. Every decision, every act of judgment is influenced by our personal history.”
I nodded intently, my eyes locked on his. “It’s like how sometimes, what seems wrong in one moment can be the only right decision in another,” I said, my voice trembling with excitement and uncertainty.
He smiled, a small, knowing smile that made the dim light seem to glow around him. “Exactly. And sometimes, those decisions aren’t black and white.” He paused, and I could see a flicker of something more in his eyes—a blend of empathy and something that felt dangerously close to desire. “Do you find that idea… liberating or frightening?” he asked quietly.
I hesitated for a moment, then replied, “Both. It’s liberating to think that we aren’t bound by absolutes, yet frightening because it means everything can be questioned—even the things that define us.” His hand brushed gently against mine as he reached for a book on the desk, the contact sending a jolt of electricity through me.
Over the following weeks, our after-class conversations became the highlight of my day. We’d sit in empty classrooms, tucked away from prying eyes, delving into discussions that were as much philosophical as they were personal. The boundaries between professor and student blurred with each shared secret and each lingering glance.
One rainy evening, after a particularly intense discussion about power and vulnerability, he finally said, “You’re not like the others, y/n. There’s a fire in you that I can’t ignore.” His words, spoken in the quiet of a deserted hallway, made my heart flutter wildly. I felt both exposed and strangely empowered by his attention.
“Professor,” I began, my voice wavering slightly as I tried to steady my racing thoughts, “I—sometimes I feel like I’m living in two different worlds. One where I’m just another student, and another where… I’m more than that. More than just someone who listens to you.”
He leaned closer, his eyes searching mine. “I know exactly what you mean,” he murmured, his tone husky. “I see you. Not just as a student, but as someone with so much potential. And yes, it’s dangerous, this connection we have. But I can’t help but be drawn to you.”
I swallowed hard, my mind echoing the lyrics of that song I’d been obsessed with lately—“Teacher pet, you’re always on my mind…” The thought sent a shiver down my spine. “But isn’t it wrong?” I whispered. “This... relationship. It breaks all the rules.”
He sighed, his gaze softening with regret. “Sometimes the rules are meant to be questioned, y/n. I know the risks. I know what this might cost me professionally and personally. But the way you look at me, the way you challenge me—it makes me feel alive, like I’m not just a teacher or an enforcer of rules. I’m more. And I believe you feel that too.”
Our conversations were punctuated by moments of heated debate and playful banter. One afternoon, after class had ended and the campus had emptied, we found ourselves alone in the quiet of the library. He was thumbing through a battered copy of a legal treatise, and I couldn’t resist the urge to tease him.
“You know,” I said with a mischievous smile, “I think you’re just trying to impress me with your vast knowledge. Are you trying to be my teacher pet, or is it just me?”
He laughed—a rich, warm sound that made my heart skip a beat. “Perhaps a little of both,” he replied. “But remember, y/n, a teacher pet isn’t just someone who seeks approval. It’s someone who dares to question the world, to push back against the very fabric of what’s expected.”
I leaned in, lowering my voice to a whisper, “And what if I don’t want to be expected to do anything? What if I just want to feel—truly feel—everything?”
He closed his book slowly, his eyes never leaving mine. “Then let us feel it together,” he said softly, his tone a promise and a plea all at once.
Our clandestine meetings became our little rebellion—a series of moments stolen from a world that insisted on labels and limitations. Late-night walks through deserted hallways, whispered confessions in the quiet corners of empty classrooms, and the shared thrill of knowing that our secret could shatter everything if it ever came to light.
One evening, as the autumn chill crept in and the campus was bathed in the glow of twilight, we found ourselves alone in his office after hours. The air was thick with unspoken tension as he closed the door behind us. “y/n, we need to talk,” he said, his voice uncharacteristically somber.
I sat on the edge of his desk, my hands trembling as I tried to steady myself. “Talk about what, Professor?” I asked, though I knew what he meant.
He walked slowly to the window, his back to me. “This can’t go on forever,” he said. “What we have—it’s a line we’re treading, one that could ruin everything we’ve built. I’m not just your teacher; I care for you in ways that complicate everything.” His words were filled with conflict, each syllable laced with both desire and dread.
I stood, my eyes brimming with tears. “I don’t want it to end,” I confessed, my voice barely audible. “Every moment with you makes me feel like I’m alive, like I’m more than just a student.”
He turned slowly, his eyes dark with emotion. “I feel it too,” he admitted. “But there’s a danger here that I can’t ignore. The world outside—what will they say? How will it affect you? How will it affect me?”
I stepped closer, reaching out to touch his arm. “I’ve thought about that every day,” I said, my voice gaining strength. “But what if we’re meant to break the rules? What if this, right here, is our lesson—one that teaches us to be brave, to love without limits?”
He hesitated, the conflict evident in his gaze. “You make it sound so simple,” he said, a small, wistful smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “But it isn’t. I’ve spent my life following rules, enforcing them. And now, with you, I want to rewrite them. I want to explore every possibility—even if it means risking everything.”
Our conversation was interrupted by the distant hum of the campus settling into the night, the sound of leaves rustling in the wind. For a long moment, neither of us spoke, the silence heavy with the weight of our unspoken promises. Finally, he reached out, pulling me into a tender embrace. “I don’t know what the future holds,” he whispered, “but I do know that I want to experience it with you—every challenge, every triumph, every lesson.”
In that embrace, I felt a certainty that defied the chaos of our situation. “I trust you, Professor,” I murmured, my voice filled with hope and resolve. “I’m ready to learn, no matter how unconventional the curriculum may be.”
As the weeks turned into months, our secret relationship deepened into a bond that defied conventional labels. We navigated the delicate balance between passion and professionalism, often exchanging heated dialogue over late-night phone calls and secret rendezvous in abandoned lecture halls. Every whispered word and every stolen kiss was a defiant act against the rigid boundaries set by the world around us.
One chilly evening, after a long day of classes and hidden meetings, we sat together in his modest apartment, the glow of a single lamp casting long shadows on the walls. “I can’t help but think of that song sometimes,” I confessed, a hint of playful mischief in my eyes. “‘Teacher Pet’—it’s like it was written for us.”
He chuckled, running a hand through his hair. “You really are my teacher pet, aren’t you?” he teased. “Always hungry for more lessons.” His voice was laced with both amusement and tenderness.
I laughed softly, the sound mingling with the quiet hum of the night. “Maybe I am,” I admitted. “And maybe you’re my favorite professor, the one who makes every lesson unforgettable.”
The conversation meandered between light-hearted teasing and serious discussions about the future—a future we knew was uncertain, yet impossible to resist. “There will be challenges,” he said, his tone earnest as he looked at me. “People will talk, and the risks are enormous. But if we’re willing to fight for this, to fight for us, then I believe we can overcome anything.”
I reached for his hand, intertwining our fingers. “I’m ready,” I said, my voice steady despite the whirlwind of emotions. “I want to learn everything there is about you—about us—and I’m willing to face whatever comes our way.”
And so, amidst whispered confessions and forbidden rendezvous, we continued to write our own curriculum—one that defied expectations and rewrote the rules. Every lesson, every moment of shared vulnerability, brought us closer to a truth we both cherished: that love, in all its messy, unpredictable glory, was the most profound education of all.
In that realm where the lines between student and teacher blurred into passion and possibility, I discovered that sometimes the most valuable lessons aren’t found in textbooks—they’re found in the quiet, stolen moments that speak to the heart. And no matter what challenges lay ahead, I knew that as long as we had each other, every day would be a lesson worth learning.

For the fanfic ask game 💖
👀 Do you have any WIPs that you would never let see the light of day? If yes, what are they about?
📊 Current number of WIPs
🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?
*deep inhale* Tara, you literally asked all the questions I didn't think I would get when I shared this 😂
👀 Do you have any WIPs that you would never let see the light of day? If yes, what are they about?
Yes. I have a Two-Face x F!OC that I am positive I will never let anyone see (minus 1). I have about 4-5 chapters so far. It's titled "Wait and Hope" and is about Harvey rekindling a romance with a long time companion/friend. Lot of Count of Monte Cristo references/quotes and focuses on sort of social expectations of people depending on their status. It's very angsty and I love it. The reason I won't let it see the light of day is because that corner of the Batman fandom is....a lot. Love 'em, but I'll continue to keep most of my Two-Face works to myself. EDIT: Yep, thanks for reminding Tara, there is another one, I will NEVER share. One person has read it but that is ALL. I will never post it and I won't even say what it's about. That shit is under lock and KEY
📊 Current number of WIPs
Well, 2 for sure and then actively working on one other so about 3 total.
🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?
So I just had 2 ideas come up. One if for a Roman Sionis x F!Reader, lots of drama/angst inspired by Melanie Martinez's song "The Contortionist". It's some unrequited love, pining, self deprecating, and all that jazz. I originally was gonna write some mean!Joel Miller and then decided to do both, but then thought that there's so much mean!Joel already (nothing wrong with it) and I want to write something different and not feel like I'm just rehashing something else so I decided to do Joel with soft! f! love interest. He's gruff, rough around the edges, but he really likes her and he's trying to figure out how a guy like him can get close to her. He's not the smooth talkin' Texan we might all think him to be, no, he's gonna be clumsy, he's stumble, and it's gonna be adorable.

Little Wind
Pairing: Joel Miller x art teacher!reader
Author’s note: we are so fucking back dude
Summary: Caught out [1.6k]
“I don’t know what we need to talk about, Marnie.” You say as you walk into your apartment and throw your car keys in the dish by the door. You told her you would call her once you weren’t navigating icy roads which was partly true. You also just needed a second to prepare yourself for this conversation. “He’s a good dad. He helped out with my field trip to the McNay. I have no worries about Ellie’s safety if that’s what this is about.”
“What happened at the winter showcase?” She asks, her tone sharp. Was she there? If she was, she didn’t talk to you or make herself known. Fuck. There’s no way this can be about what you think it’s about. You’ve been careful. Going out of your way to go somewhere far away from the school and any students that might appear out of nowhere. There’ve been a few times where you’ve been a little reckless but you had it under control.
“Ellie had an anxiety attack. I sat with her and her dad in the stairwell until it passed.” You say, attempting to shrug off the cloud of worry that’s settled on your shoulders.
“And the visits to your classroom almost every week?”
“Jesus, are you spying on me?” You breathe a laugh but she doesn’t humor you. She only waits for a response. “My projector’s been broken and he’s trying to fix it for me since my work orders keep getting denied. Is there anything else I can confirm or deny for you?” You ask, glancing at your half-finished canvas as you pace. You can’t sit still. Not when she’s calling you during your break and interrogating you. She sighs and you can imagine her pinching the bridge of her nose.
“If administration finds out about this-“
“Finds out about what? My broken projector?”
“That you’re sleeping with one of your student's parents.” Your back molars buzz at her words and a wave of nausea hits you. You shake your head and take a deep breath.
“That’s not funny. You could get me fired for saying things like that.”
“Oh, c’mon, honey. This may be a big city but people talk like it’s a small town,” she says. You feel caught but you don’t want her to know that. “She’s good. She could go to State and win scholarships. But if the judges find out that you gave her any special treatment because of your relationship with her dad, not only will they fire you but you will ruin any chance she has at getting better.”
“This is ridiculous.” You say and she huffs on the other line.
“No, what’s ridiculous is the thought that you’d put your students’ well-being at risk so you can fuck around with a parent. Did you ever stop to think how Ellie might react if she finds out about this? How this might affect her?” She asks like you’re stupid. Of course, you have. It’s been the idea pressing on your brain since before the field trip.
You just never thought it’d get this far.
You think it’d break her heart if she found out. You think she’d curse and scream at you and you’d deserve it. You think she’d never want to see you again or worse, never want to make art again. The world needs Ellie’s art even if she doesn’t know it yet. And you fucked it up.
“You have until Spring Break to either break up with him or say something to Martinez.”
“Or what?”
“I will.” She says with alarming clarity.
“You know, it’s been really nice talking to you, Marnie, but I’ve gotta go do some lesson plans.” You hang up before she can respond and practically throw your phone away from you. Your head swims and you have to clutch the back of a chair to steady yourself.
What the fuck? How did she even find out? She saw you once at Whataburger months ago and now she has eyes and ears watching you? Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. You need to tell Joel or cut contact entirely. At this point, you don’t know which is the right option. You don’t make enough money from the bar and commissions to stop teaching. You’re only on the second step of submissions for a gallery and you haven’t even finished the paintings you want to send them. And Marnie’s right, Ellie is really good. She got second place at the showcase, which didn’t surprise you, and now she has the opportunity to get her own small exhibition if she sends in her work soon.
You can’t do this. You shouldn’t have ever done this. You shouldn’t have let him into your life. You shouldn’t have put your phone number in his phone or let him sit at your bar or fucking beg him to come over like you did barely a week ago. You should’ve kept your head down and done your lesson plans and art history lessons like the good, perfect teacher you’ll never be.
You don’t know what to do with this heavy feeling in your chest, guilt and anger, and a sense of loss swirling around your ribs until you look at the lone empty canvas lying on your kitchen table. It’s the last unpainted one you have and probably the last one you’ll be able to afford for a little bit. You were saving it for something special but you can’t wait for special anymore. You have to get this out.
Without thinking, you grab the first paints your hands touch and walk out to your balcony. There’s already no way you’re getting your deposit back so you might as well make it worth it. You haphazardly put up a cloth behind the canvas before you start taking literal handfuls of paint and throwing it. Reds, purples, lumpy, half-dried-out blacks, and green splatter across the white, ruining the last bit of pure material that you had. The cold wind whips around your face and blows dust and even kicks up a few rocks that get stuck in the wet paint. Colors sprint down to kiss the pavement and leave a strange conglomeration of colors near your back door. You’re so caught up in the sloppy, angry dispersal of paint that you almost don’t realize you’re crying until a sob escapes your throat.
For the first time in a long time, you were so happy. Just deliriously, stupidly, dangerously happy. You let yourself relax and get comfortable and open up because it felt right only to be hit with the reminder that things like that aren’t reserved for you. You’ve consistently picked everyone else over yourself because that’s what teachers are supposed to do. Maybe Henry was right. Maybe you would’ve been much better suited to being the silent muse who wants for nothing. At least then you’d be able to pay your bills.
You slump onto the frigid concrete of your balcony, your paint-soaked hands shaking in front of you, and stare at the canvas. It has a weird texture from all the dirt and debris getting flown your way and the wind has made streaks in all different directions. The colors are objectively ugly together. They swirl and drip in mysterious and formless ways. It’s gritty There’s no story being told here. There’s no shape, no dimension, nothing. Your college professors would rip this to shreds if they could see it.
But the gallery might want it.
Before you can talk yourself out of it, you push yourself off the floor, scrub your freezing hands raw in the sink, wipe your tears, and send a picture of the painting to the gallery. You title the email “Something Different,” and quickly type out a message.
Hey,
Finished up some stuff today and thought you might like it. It’s something a little different. It’s called ‘Spring Break.’
You shoot out the email and turn off your phone, too anxious to watch your inbox for a response. You leave your canvas out to dry but bring in all your paint because you can’t afford to lose that much paint to the elements especially after you just finished heaping globs of it around. You don’t feel much better. You still feel the weight of Marnie’s words pressing on your lungs and the fizzing in your molars. You feel, ironically, like a girl in a painting you saw years ago.
You remember it was painted by Leighton sometime in the 1800’s. Although you can’t remember the exact historical details, you can see the painting clearly in your head. A bride and groom are stopped by a knight leaving their wedding ceremony after being showered with pink flowers. There’s a battle happening and they need the groom to join the fight. His new wife, young and dressed in white, watches the conversation and knows there’s nothing she can do. Her husband’s hand is already on his sword. He’s going to leave and die on the battlefield and she’s going to go home a widow. They’re both helpless and doomed to their obligations: him to his brothers in arms and her to her marriage.
You think you and Joel are doomed in the same way. There’s not a whole lot either of you can do to change your fate. Maybe if you had met him at a different time— maybe if the couple got married on a different day— things might have worked out for the better. You might’ve been happy. You might’ve had a minuscule chance at having something good for yourself.
But good fate never made for good art. You know this now. You feel it in your bones.
There is no other way.
