Christmas is such a special time, not just for the magical atmosphere given by all the lights, the shopping to get some good presents and all of that but also because it usually is the time you get to spend with all your loved ones.
Among all those loved ones you would've like to spend the so called most wonderful time of the year there was also another person that, during this last year, became pretty important to you, that one was John. That would have been your first Christmas together and, Needless to say, you were really looking forward to it: getting him the perfect presents, even that being rather hard as he already had everything he could ask for since he had enough money for all of that, picturing him interacting with your family and all of them getting along, him complimenting your mum for the delicious food she cooked…the only thing that could spoil that perfect scenario was him missing all of that. And that was exactly the turn things took: when everything was set for him to come and spend his first Christmas holidays with your family, he came and said that he couldn’t do it anymore due to an intensive training schedule his manager decided to submit the squad to as a “punishment” for their latest losses.
When your boyfriend told you that news you were hoping you didn’t have to listen to, your heart broke into a million pieces and you were sure he could have heard it from the outside too.
"But you promised you would've come"
"I know but it's work and it doesn't depend on me"
You got so angry the night he called all your plans off you were this close to a fight but instead you just kept it all inside and let him cuddle you all night, trying not to let him see the hot tears that were staining your face.
The next day he woke up before you to go training as you had to finish preparing your suitcase ready to take the flight home in a few hours. That morning he tried to make it up to you by whisepring sweet nothings into your ear as he would place lingering kisses against your cheek and by leaving your breakfast ready (including the last chocolate muffin you would usually argue for) with a note saying he was really sorry abd that he loved you so much. As much as you would've liked to play the part of the strong girl that doesn't need these useless things, that sweet gesture caused you to smile from ear to ear, taking your phone in your hand to write him a thank you text, adding you loved him more than ever.
As soon as you arrived at your parents' you facetimed John to let him know you were home safe, as he kept sending you texts asking you how were you doing.
"Yes, I'm entering my bedroom in this very moment" You sighed, leaving your suitcase at the side of the bed and abandoning yourself on what was would have been your bed for those upcoming days.
"Good, how was the trip?" He asked as he was lounging on his bed, with his arm propped on the bed holding his head. The weary smile curving his lips mase your heart flutter, you would have loved to kiss his tiredness away and cuddle next to him.
"Okay, it's so damn freezing outside I just wanted to get home and drink this hot cocoa my mum just made for me"
You were literally gladly to have that steaming mug in your hands and a soft and warm bed to realx on, you were feeling like a child and that made John's smile grow even wider.
"You look like a happy baby"
"I am indeed!" You two shared a little laugh before asking him how was training.
"I'm kinda tired you know, with the cold and everything it's getting kinda hard"
He let out a loud yawn, rubbing his hand over his worn out features. He looked like a baby too in that moment, needing all the cuddles in the world.
"I miss you" You whined, pouting and wrapping your blanket tighter around you.
"You look so snuggly with that blanket on" John smiled softly at your face reflected on the phone screen.
He missed so much seeing you wandering through the house wearing that pile thing around your shoulder as if it was a cape.
"We could have been here together, snuggling under this soft and warm blanket but you preferred staying there, in cold and rainy Manchester"
"You know I would've loved that but Pep decided is a good time for us to work on some tactics"
"Pep, it's Christmas for Christ's sake, go eat some sweets and let these poor men go!" You rolled your eyes, sighing in distress "I should've been your manager"
Your exasperated reaction made him chuckle out loud.
"Yeah, we would've had so much fun…especially me" He wiggled his eyebrows in a flirty way.
"Nope, you wouldn't have gotten anything" You playfully snapped back, him being the one to pout this time.
"I miss you too" He confessed, wanting nothing but to run his long fingers over your face and kiss you.
You looked at each other in silence for a couple of minutes, just getting lost in each other's eyes.
"Mum was really looking forward to meet you"
"Me too, I'm so sorry to be missing all of that"
"And now I'm about to face a long family dinner without you"
"Hey, I already said I'm sorry, don't make me feel guiltier"
"I love making you suffer from time to time" You said, sticking your tongue between your teeth.
He chuckled before waving you goodbye and sending a kiss your way, not after hearing you say how much you loved him.
-
"Someone rang the door!"
"I'm coming!" You shouted in answer to your mum.
That morning you were adjusting the Christmas tree your mum lef you to do as someone rang the door.
As you opened the door and you realised who was the one person standing at your parents' entrance, you gasped and let the glass bauble you were holding to put on the tree fall to the ground, breaking it into a million pieces.
"JOHN??"
"Happy Christmas baby" You jumped in his arms, wrapping your arms and legs around him like a koala.
He giggled, his lips pressed against your head.
"What the hell are you doing here??"
"Well, if you don't want me anymore I'm going back to Manchester"
"Don't you dare!" You both laughed as you cupped his face to give him a long, needed kiss on the lips. The contrast between your warm lips against his colder ones made you shiver while he let out a pleased moan, enjoying the warmth you were radiating as he spent the last hours out in the cold.
"Oh he made it in the end!" Your mum exclaimed seeing you in tears in John's arms.
"What does it mean?? You knew it?? For all this time!" You gasped pointing a finger against your mum, guessing she knew everything from the start and probably talked to John to arrange the surprise. But how was it possible? They didn't know each other personally.
"Well, I unlocked your phone and searched for her number telling her about the surprise I had in mind" The City player explained you, as you couldn't quite believe what was happening right in front of your eyes.
"You two…you have been playing with my feelings all this time...that's not fair"
"But we succeeded in surprising you so we won" He smirked, kissing your forehead.
Everything you had in mind finally happened: he met your parents, your sister and had dinner with you all, including him appreciating your mum's cooking skills.
“So this is our room?” John asked wiggling his eyebrows mischievously as you showed him upstairs.
“No, it’s mine. Yours is just here on the right”
“Oh come on, I don’t wanna sleep all alone in a new house” He whined hugging you and hiding his face in your neck “I’m scared”
His stubble tickled the highly sensitive skin of your neck, making you giggle and squirm in his arms.
“John, we can’t do anything as far as my family is here”
“I don’t wanna do anything! I just wanna sleep. What do you have in mind, you cheeky girl?” He smiled mischievously.
“The same thing you have in mind, you naughty boy” You pinched his cheek before kissing him softly.
“The heating doesn’t work properly though...I’m so cold”
“John stop it” You couldn’t stop giggling as you tried to push him out of your bedroom. You would have really liked to sleep next to him but you didn't want your family to make some comments or anything about your private business.
"You can't leave me out in the cold!"
"I'm not! You have a hot bed waiting for you"
The day after, when you were strolling hand in hand with him through some Christmas markets, you realised how lucky you got: with him by your side you were feeling as if you had just won the lottery. That thought made you squeeze his hand firmer, drawing his attention.
"What?"
You gazed up at him: his curls perfectly styled, his slender body wrapped in that black wool coat you insisted for him to buy instead of those puffers he would use at City, his cheeks slightly pink due to the cold weather, making his cerulean eyes stand out.
"Nothing, I just love you so much"
John smiled back at you, meeting your smaller figure standing on your tiptoes ready to kiss him.
"Even after having played that prank on you?"
"Even more"
"You said that! Don't complain then"
You playfully hit him on his toned arm.
"It doesn't mean go on, play pranks on me whenever you want to!" You warned him jokingly.
John trapped you in his arms, engulfing you in his embrace which felt so perfect.
"I really am the perfect girlfriend, you know?"
"Pff, don't flatter yourself, I am the perfect boyfriend"
"This coat your perfect girlfriend made you buy is what makes you the perfect boyfriend, nothing else"
"Oh so you're with me just for the looks? I'll remember that"
He pinched your hips from underneath your coat, making you squirm. The cold air and the never stopping smile making your cheeks hurt but you couldn’t care less.
"I have another thing or two that could make me an even better boyfriend…" John smirked teasingly, muttering that kinky words in your ear, adding some red to your already tinted face. He took your hand in his to start walking together again. That was really the most wonderful time of the year.

Scott Weiland - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
In 2011, Scott Weiland recorded a deeply personal album of holiday classics titled, ‘The Most Wonderful Time of The Year,’ inspired by celebrated crooners like Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole. The original 10-song collection will be expanded with FOUR unreleased recordings for its limited edition vinyl debut available for pre-order TODAY and out 11/4.

player: John Stones (and a long cameo from Dias) words: 981 request: John Stones - you / your - 500 - 750 words - As I'm terribly shy and introvert, I was 🤔 if you could write sth about you and him going to a Xmas/NYE party and you struggle in fitting in and doing small talk but he helps you throughout the night and he's so careful
Tumblr media
You stand nervously, fingers alternating between clutching and playing with your glass. John isn’t standing with you, but you’d also stressed to him that you didn’t want him to feel as though he needed to babysit you. And while it may have taken a few attempts to push him away from you, John had reluctantly moved away and engaged in conversations with some of his teammates and here you are, standing awkwardly both hoping you had someone to talk to and praying that no-one does just so you don’t have to talk while panicking.
Wishing you could pull out your phone to give you some distraction, you take another drink instead and glance back around you. Some of the faces here are familiar, and though some of the women close by have spoken to you a handful of times at matches for both club and country, there’s no real familiarity there to enable neither you nor them to come and strike up conversation. You’ve had a few conversations, more small talk than anything, but you haven’t always been standing or sat away from everyone.
“I’ve been sent to rescue you,” Rúben says as he appears at your side, making you jump slightly. “Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you.” he gives you a warm smile and for the first time since John left you, you feel settled. “Drink?” He offers you a flute of something sparkling and you graciously accept.
“Rescue me from who?”
“Yourself. Don’t give me that look, I’ve been watching you too. Come my little bird, there’s food over there and I’m hungry.” he says this part loud enough for anyone close by to be listening. When he drops his voice he adds, “John’s stuck talking to someone and needs you as a diversion.”
“Oh, I have to rescue him but he couldn’t do the same.” You challenge as the two of you begin to walk.
“Thought you didn’t want a babysitter?” Rúben replies quickly and you feel heat begin to burn at your cheeks. “Yeah, he told me. Do you want one?” he asks and gestures to the stack of plates. You shake your head and he picks one up for himself. “I get it, I don’t like these things either.” he confesses, scanning over the table and selecting a few pieces of food to add to his plate. “Especially since becoming single. It’s just you in the spotlight and everyone is looking at you. She was amazing at making me feel calm and as though no-one else was paying attention to us. Something tells me you know how that feels.” It’s not a question and yet it feels a little like one.
“I get envious of how John can step into a room and just… be John. I’m rehearsing lines in my head before anyone has even spoken to me and more often than not, I don’t even need to use those because no-one speaks to me.”
“I’m speaking to you.” Rúben states, giving your hand a little squeeze before turning away from the buffet now he’s happy with his food haul and begins to make his way, with you in tow, towards John. “If you ever need someone, come and get me.”
“You’re a good man Rú.”
“I know.” he flashes a grin and instead of verbally responding, you swipe something from his plate and eat it with much enthusiasm.
“Hey!” John beams at you as you approach, his arm reaching out to pull you as close to his body as he can without it seeming too inappropriate. “I missed you,” he mutters into your hair as he places a little kiss into your hair.
If Rúben had calmed you previously, then John has sedated you. Just having one arm around you, the feel of your body moulding to his, taking in a scent that is only John as well as the scent of his aftershave is enough to leave you feeling content again.
“He was just speaking about you,” the man standing with John says. His expression is a happy one, there’s no malice in his tone and yet there’s a little panic that begins to rise up in you.
“Oh is that so?”
“I was talking about the promotion you earnt.”
Earnt. Not given. John always made sure to use vocabulary that credited you at all times but hearing it tonight made your stomach flip. When you look back at John, he beams down at you with an expression of love and adoration. He had no reason to speak of you when you weren’t close by, but to hear that he was? It made you feel good.
“Congratulations. Does it come with a bigger responsibility list? I imagine it would.”
It’s a topic that you weren’t expecting and in a way, talking about yourself makes you feel a little nervous even if it’s an easy topic. Rúben remains with you both, and though each person chimes in at the right moments, John lets you take the heat off him and you find yourself shedding the anxiety the longer the conversation continues. You wouldn’t say you’re “cured” for the night, but he’s making it easier. When Rúben speaks, it continues to keep the mood light and the conversation just as much so.
Every so often you feel some small gesture from him. A light touch on your arm, a gentle stroke of the small of your back, fingers and thumb at your elbow when he reaches around you for something. Nothing too much, but enough to let you know quietly that he’s thinking of you, he wants to interact but he’s letting you have this moment. This isn’t babysitting and you realise this now, it’s him bringing you to the right people and him trying to gently guide you out of the shell you’ve been hiding in. And this is what you love about him.

Life beyond OL - Xmas movies and a short Bucharest tour
About three weeks ago, What Else Anon prompted me to tell her what else I was reading, watching or interested in lately (https://www.tumblr.com/sgiandubh/734634576675274752/so-about-tcnd-no-im-kidding-dont-throw-me). That gave me an idea for a poll:
Should I turn this ask into a Life Beyond OL weekly, preferably on Tuesdays?
97,1% of the 35 brave people to answer said yes, so here we are.
Reading won't do it this hectic week: since Friday is my last day on the job before the holidays, I'm literally in a wrap-up frenzy, both at home and at the office. Let's say I am not exactly the type who buys her presents in July, which pretty much explains the circus.
As for watching, well: nope, I will not watch A Princess for Christmas if you'd pay me. It's both beyond and beneath my dignity, I am afraid and bless The Boy, but that is not enough for an incentive. By the same token, I shall not willingly acknowledge in public (at the blessed age of 45) that I know all the damn lines of Home Alone 1 by heart. With age, my absolute go-to Xmas movie has to be Love Actually. If only for this perfect opening scene with 0 cheesiness in it - you watch it and you are immediately hooked:
Interested in: going home for Christmas, what else? And before local exasperation hits hard (roughly two days after arrival, to be honest), I am still procrastinating on YouTube and watching those foot-in-mouth travel vlogs ('John and Jane Doe do ...'). In a sea of meh, you might find something interesting enough: I have no idea who Sammy & Tommy are, but they are smart people and they surely know a thing or two about travel. Once in Bucharest, my hometown, they followed their instinct and engaged with the natives - always the best plan.
Let's say it was worth it and probably went above and beyond their expectations: we tend to be obnoxiously hospitable. And I found the bakery people flawlessly endearing. I can confidently say it was something absolutely spontaneous and something I would do myself anytime for a total stranger:
youtube
A bit of context: the Cișmigiu Gardens look way better than the last time I ventured in there. It is probably one of the most beloved parks of the city, a stone throw away from the Old Town, and also a wannabe copycat of Munich's Englischer Garten.
The featured bakery & cake shop are actually quite decent, serving traditional pastries from Transylvania (the West of the country) and some of the local dessert mishmash fare. Despite what the very nice bakery guy is telling Sammy and Tommy, neither savarina, nor amandina are 'traditional ' Romanian cakes. Savarina is simply the Polish/French rum baba, Stohrer invented for Stanisław I Leszczyński, the exiled Polish king who was also Louis XV's father in law. As for the other one, let's say it could be the love child of a Sachertorte and a Rigó Jancsi cake - totally Austro-Hungarian (Wikipedia babbles: it has nothing to do with French cuisine!)! Both sickeningly sweet and both personal favorites, amen. The first one they tried, cozonac, is a babka spinoff: something I hate with a passion, but also something that is going to be literally every(fucking)where this Christmas ('oh, you don't like my cozonac?! huh, nonono, I do, it's so fabulous I am taking my time!').
Honestly? This is a place that suffered a lot, especially during the Eighties, when Ceaușescu thought it would be a great idea to bulldoze about 60% of the old neighborhoods, after the horrific 1977 earthquake (perfect pretext). Words could never decently describe the shock, the drama and the abuse: people throwing themselves under the first passing car as their beloved houses were torn down, people displaced in the middle of nowhere, a human chain of people holding hands in a failed attempt to stop the demolition of a beloved church. All that quiet, endearing charm suddenly replaced by a Pyongyang transplant smack in the middle of town. This explaining perhaps why Bucharest is not the best/most touted tourist destination in my country. Tourists usually choose Transylvania (absolutely deserved) or, if they really want to be adventurous, Bucovina (or Țara de Sus, literally: The Highlands, hehe) - an off the beaten track gem and a very special place to me (half of my family hails from there). Impressed to see these guys hit Timișoara - one of the most beautiful, interesting and definitely underrated cities, right next to the border with both Hungary and Serbia.
Nice guys or not, I would never take you to that bakery, though. Nah: I'd take you round the corner, at the Athénée Palace's English Bar - the red arrow marks my very own spot since, heh, forever? And we'd have the Amalfi Old Fashioned cocktails: they are mandatory, here.
Tumblr media
PS: the Romanian guy kept his word and took them places the next day. I'd happily babble about this next week, though - from home. :)

ok i'll bite and start watching doctor who again.
any recs?
particularly of episodes to avoid if one is absolutely unable to watch anything horror-like? (i remember watching the Empty Child when i was younger and being traumatized, for example)
you are in luck. i have a whole list.
this only consists of new who episodes (because i haven't watched old who). also if you decide to rewatch the full series, keep in mind the specials are NOT skippable and in fact contain quite important moments
of course i recommend watching the whole show, but these are particularly good or important episodes!
in bold are particular highlights (as in particularly good episodes according to me) or important episodes. basically, the short list is the bold titles
this was an already-made list that i did for a friend a while ago, and it's made up mostly of standalone episodes. please tell me if you want more plot-oriented recs!
do not watch list at the end
onwards:
Episodes to watch (specifically):
S1E01 Rose (intro, good for setting up the themes and the show)
S1E06 Dalek (good, bit of plot + callback to old who)
S1E08 Father's Day (maybe hard without context?)
S2EX The Runaway Bride (2006 Xmas special, stands alone)
S3E08 Human Nature/S3E09 The Family of Blood (two-parter, maybe slightly icky for you. am willing to give you more details if you want them. watch at your own risk)
S3EX Voyage of the Damned (2007 Xmas special, stands alone)
S4E07 The Unicorn and the Wasp (just 1920s fun it's great)
S4E16 The Waters of Mars (plot-heavy esp at the end but my favourite episode ever)
S5E01 The Eleventh Hour
S5E10 Vincent and the Doctor
(moffat's seasons were very much arcs and plot-heavy)
The Day of the Doctor
S8E05 Time Heist
(s9 unwatchable without previous seasons)
S10E01 The Pilot (for the first appearance of a fun companion, not that great but it's a soft reboot so good to get back into Doctor Who)
S11E01 The Woman Who Fell to Earth
S11E04 Rosa
S11E06 Demons of the Punjab
(s12 unfortunately not that good, and s13 is a whole Thing without standalone episodes)
❌ DO NOT WATCH (if you dislike horror) ❌
S1E09 The Empty Child
S1E10 The Doctor Dances
S3E10 Blink (highlight but the weeping angels are terrifying)
S4E08 Silence in the Library/S4E09 Forest of the Dead (my 2nd favourite episode ever) (this one is definitely a bit horror. if you didn't like the empty child do not watch this)
S4E10 Midnight (psychological horror. do not watch if you have a hard time with horror. also one of the best episodes of modern who)
S5E04 The Time of Angels/S5E05 Flesh and Stone (the angels again)
S6E05 The Rebel Flesh/S6E06 The Almost People
S6E09 Night Terrors (not my thing)
S6E11 The God Complex
S10E04 Knock Knock (not that hard horror? but similar to the empty child so you probably won't like it)
⚠️ WATCH WITH CAUTION ⚠️ (i think you can watch these, but be careful)
S2E04 The Girl in the Fireplace (maybe a bit too plot-heavy?)
S2E05 Rise of the Cybermen/S2E06 The Age of Steel
S2E07 The Idiot's Lantern (not particularly great, but on this list because of a face-stealing lifeform)
S7E07 The Bells of St John (this one is safer than others on this list, but putting it here as a warning)
S7E10 Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS (not very horrifying, but better safe than sorry)
S8E08 Mummy on the Orient Express
S9E11 Heaven Sent
S10E02 Smile

Speed-running Doctor Who - 11th Doctor
Tumblr media
A quick and dirty guide for those who want to get into the show, but don't want to watch everything from the beginning.
For Those Who Just Wanna Get An Idea of the Era
A Christmas Carol - 2010 Xmas Special
Tumblr media
Timey Whimey, fairy-tale like, charming, doesn't make a lick of sense, messes with established continuity, and accidentally makes the Doctor into a unrepentant mega arsehole. All while boasting scrumptious design and bedazzling direction. It's style over substance, which is basically the Eleventh Doctor's era in a nut shell.
Plot Important Episodes
Entrances, Exits, Enemies, Lore Drops, and Character Development
Tumblr media
The Eleventh Hour - S31E1 (Eleventh Doctor's first episode; introduces Amy and Rory, kicks off the Silence arc)
The Beast Below - S31E2 (Amy's first trip in the Tardis, re-establishes the shows premise)
The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone - S31E4&5 (reintroduces River Song and the Weeping Angels)
The Vampires of Venice - S31E6 (Rory's first trip in an the Tardis and more development of the Silence arc)
Amy's Choice - S31E7 (character development for Amy and the Doctor)
The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood - S31E8&E9 (reintroduces the Silurians and Rory goes missing for awhile)
Vincent and the Doctor - S31E10 (fallout from the events of the previous story/character development for Amy)
The Lodger - S31E11 (Meet Craig! Also foreshadowing for events in the season 32)
The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang - S31E12&E13 (season finale, ending of the first half of the Silence arc, Rory returns, we have Amy and Rory's wedding at the end)
The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon - S31E1&E2 (kicks off the River Song/kidnapped baby arc, starts the second half of the Silence arc)
The Curse of the Black Spot - S32E3 (Captain Avery and his son will be important during the mid-season finale)
The Doctor's Wife - S32E4 (The Tardis becomes a human)
The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People - S32E5&E6 (we find out Amy is pregnant and then she gets kidnapped)
A Good Man Goes to War - S32E7 (mid-season finale, the Doctor and Rory rescue Amy, Amy gives birth to her and Rory's daughter Melody, Melody then gets kidnapped, first appearance of the Paternoster Gang)
Let's Kill Hitler - S32E8 (we find out that River Song is Amy and Rory's long lost daughter Melody, thus ending the kidnapped arc.)
Closing Time - S32E12 (Craig returns!!!)
The Wedding of River Song - S32E13 (The Doctor and River get officially married and we pretty much end the Silence arc)
Asylum of the Daleks - S33E1 (There's some drama about Amy and Rory getting a divorce but it's resolved by the end. Also we meet Clara for the first time)
Dinosaurs on a Spaceship - S33E2 (Rory's father, Brian, is introduced)
The Power of Three - S33E4 (character development for the mains, the return of UNIT and we meet Kate Stewart)
The Angels Take Manhattan - S33E5 (Amy and Rory's last episode)
The Snowmen - 2012 Xmas Special (we meet Clara again and kick off both the impossible girl arc and the great intelligence returns)
The Bells of Saint John - S33E6 (Clara joins the tardis officially and we get more development of the various arcs)
The Rings of Akhaten - S33E7 (Clara's first trip in the Tardis and we get some of her backstory)
Cold War - S33E8 (The Ice Warriors return)
The Crimson Horror - S33E11 (Clara officially meets the Paternoster Gang)
The Name of the Doctor - S33E12 (the end of the impossible girl arc and the great intelligence arc, we find out about the War Doctor for the first time)
The Day of the Doctor - 50th Anniversary Special (fourth multi-doctor story and the end of the Time War arc)
The Time of the Doctor - 2013 Xmas Special (The Eleventh Doctor's last story)
Personal Favorite and Least Favorite Stories
Because one man's trash is another man's treasure and vice versa
Favorite: The God Complex -S32E11
Tumblr media
Least Favorite: Let's Kill Hitler - S32E8
Tumblr media
(disclaimer: no spin-offs or extended universe stuff was considered when making this list)
Next Up: 12th Doctor

Thoughts on the 2024 Oscars
Just the other day I posted my Best Movies of 2023 list, so you pretty much know what I was rooting for! But here are some thoughts on tonight's awards, telecast and winners:
Best Director: Christopher Nolan - he deserved this award, but he easily should've won for Memento, The Dark Knight, Inception or Dunkirk too.
Best Actress: Emma Stone - really Academy? Lilly Gladstone should've won for Killers of the Flower Moon. That was a performance where she leaned into the silences and it was all in the eyes. While Emma Stone gave a powerhouse performance in Poor Things (an uneven movie IMHO) it was more of a showy "hey, look at me" performance. It's hard to compare both performances since they were so different but Gladstone should've won (and made history).
Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr. - Congrats to the first SNL cast member (he was in the 1985-86 season) to win an Acting Oscar. So cool to see the supporting actor from Weird Science, Back to School and A Scanner Darkly win! He probably should've won for Tropic Thunder, but he is worthy of this award for this performance!
Best Supporting Actress: Da'Vine Joy Randolph - I named The Holdovers my Best Movie of 2023 so I'm thrilled they did the right thing and at least rewarded Randolph!
Best Documentary Feature Film: 20 Days in Mariupol - I named this my Best Documentary of 2023. Big Congrats to GBH, Frontline and everyone involved with this powerful doc!
Best Animated Short Film: War Is Over - In my recent guide to the Oscar Nominated Short Films I predicted this. But big congrats to co-writer / executive producer Sean Ono Lennon. The son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono oversaw the short animated film inspired by John and Yoko's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)". I met Mr. Sean Ono Lennon when he did an in-store performance at Other Music in NYC in 2010. In Feb. 2015, I named his band Ghost of the Saber Tooth Tiger's album Midnight Sun my #1 Album of 2014. Then both The GOASTT and their leader Sean Lennon retweeted it and thanked me! I've also gotten to cover his band The Claypool Lennon Delirium here as well.
Best Live Action Short Film: The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar - another short film I predicted would win. Wes Anderson has been nominated in a lot of other categories, but it's nice to see him finally win, even if he should've won for Bottle Rocket or Rushmore!
Very cool to see Slash doing a guitar solo during "I'm Just Ken". Yes the Barbie song lost to Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell's "What Was I Made For" also from that film, but how cool was it to see the GNR guitarist ripping it up at the Oscars?!

DELUXE EDITION OF HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY INDIE CHRISTMAS SET FOR RELEASE IN NOVEMBER 2023
Tumblr media
Have Yourselves a Merry Indie Christmas (digital volumes I & II plus the Selected Songs CD) raised nearly £6,000 for Crisis at Christmas last year. The album, championed by internationally renowned critics such as John Harris (Guardian & Rolling Stone) & Pete Paphides (The Times, Mojo), received sensational reviews across the board, genuinely staking a claim to be the best-ever Indie Xmas compilation of all time. (see reviews in the archive section).
For 2023, in order to raise more money for Crisis, I will be releasing a deluxe version, with a half-dozen or so extra tracks. If there are any artists who have an original Xmas song, past or present, that they want to submit for consideration, then please email me at [email protected]
The original digital albums can still be purchased here - V4Velindre | Various Artists (bandcamp.com), but the CD has sold out.

"We've Only Just Begun" by The Carpenters
"When I Need You" by Leo Sayer

I miss going to concerts with people. The last couple I’ve been to I had to go by myself. Gonna be honest, seeing the Rolling Stones was amazing and a long time dream but the number of times I turned to the empty seat next to me to share my excitement started to get me down. I ended up listening to the family next to me talk just because it made me feel not so alone and it was really cool to see Alice Cooper also but all of my friends canceled on me when I was picking up the tickets for us at the window so I went alone to that too.
I guess I’m bummed too because last year I didn’t get any Xmas gifts from any friends even after buying or making everyone something and then again this past year my friend stopped me from buying tickets to see Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks and said she and her room mate were gonna get them for me for Xmas but then the tickets for Nashville went up because they waited too long and then they were gonna get them for Kansas City but the prices have gone up for there too. I suggested seeing John Mellencamp since he’s gonna be in our town and the tickets are much cheaper but she just frowned and acted like she really would have rather not. I didn’t even ask her to buy the tickets, just to go with me. I dunno, sometimes I wish I had some other friends to share this stuff with.
