What a delight music legend David Jackson is. No surprise. I was warned by his legions of loyal fans, most of whom are his brilliantly talented contemporaries. This was fabulous fun, topped perhaps by pre-fed stories with lots of misinformation which paved the way for the truths, which proved to make it all even more fun. So what if David wasn’t actually at Columbia Studios when George Harrison hid the pot from the cops, he told great story! Who cares if David was with Cher in DC, not the Chateau Marmont when she got a call from Jimmy (President Carter), not Henry Kissinger, or when he was offered his own show after being a regular on The Andy Williams Show he didn’t turn it down, it just… well… he tells it... and then some… and then some more. Great stories, all. We hear about Hoyt Axton and how they wrote Ringo’s No No Song, and Three Dog Night’s Joy To The World, and what happened to David in both, there’s the Chambers Brothers, Bo Diddley, Jackson Browne, John Denver, Sonny, and Sonny and Cher, Glen Frey, Jimmy Buffett, a GREAT story about Roger Miller and Glen Campbell, The Bohemian Grove, what that gentleman’s club is really all about,  and his upcoming trip to Marrakesh to play and… play. What a life. Well lived, still living to the max. This man is damn delight. Top to bottom, start to finish. I can’t wait for his return to the States and his Friday nights at The Write Off Room with The Deductions. Till then I’ll be hitting his Bandcamp

John Denver "Rhymes & Reasons" LP. This was my dad's album. He had John's first 5 albums. I remember when JD died my old man was kind of bummed. I offhandedly said something to the effect that it was a shame he died but his music was lame (I was a week shy of 16 when he died so I was as far away from Denver's music as I'd ever be) My old man was like "He did some really good stuff on his early albums". While I held my dad's opinion on music very highly, I knew sometimes he liked really terrible shit that I just couldn't get behind. Anyway... in 2011 or so my dad decided to give me his sizable record collection to sell in my store after he digitized them. He had enough obscure stuff that the quarter of his collection that was common (about 500 records) I didn't pay much mind to. Yet somehow this debut album got separated from the other 4. When my old man croaked unexpectedly in 2016 I was sorting a bunch of records and ran across 4 of his John Denver albums and decided I'd finally see if what my dad said about JD in October of 1997 was actually true. It turned out he was in fact correct and I ended up keeping those 4 albums and wondered where his debut album went. Turns out it never left my parent's basement. Found it last spring when I started emptying out the place as I had about 2000 LP's stored there. I was thrilled as it has my favorite song of his on it ("Yellow Cat", which he didn't even write). This is one of those times vinyl breaks my heart. "Yellow Cat" has an almost invisible needle drag scratch that causes a meaty click for a few revolutions at the very start. It's just ironic since my dad took excellent care of his vinyl, but I've done the same thing before. Then on the second best song on the album "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" there's an audible pressing bump! So it goes.
