Johsnavi and pumpkin spice latte adventures
“This is stupid.” Teeth chattered together against thebreeze that delicately dipped the city’s temperature to just under Usnavi’scomfort level. With his hat fastened tight against his head and his puffed coatsipped over his mouth one would think the tropical man could retain some heat. No, he was as transparent as paper when it came to body warmth. Only fiveminutes after stepping out of his house, Usnavi was mentally checking off allthe reasons why he regretted going outside in the middle of a chilly Octoberday.
Just as he thought about reaching for his apartment keys ahand gently scooped his and laced his larger fingers between Usnavi’s tired andslightly calloused ones. Johan was dressed fairly lightly, a recycled greensort of jacket and red scarf he had knit himself which would explain itsunnaturally long size even for a scarf. It looked as though he was going forLenny Kravitz’s look of over sized scarf. “You said we weren’t going to spendall day indoors, we need to get that good ol’ vitamin D.”
“Its New York, the only vitamin out here is iron and smog.”He grumbled, his face turning a bit red as Johan started pulling him a long gently.“Only reason I’m doing this is because I wanted to pick up some pumpkin spicefor the café.”
Johan shook his head almost disapprovingly, his lips turneddown into a small frown. “Falling into the basic trend of pumpkin spiced thing, its all just a ploy by—“
“Big business, commercialism, unobtainable popularity andsingularity that is killing the individual originality of people” his Dominicanboyfriend recited coolly. It was everything he had heard before. He eyed Johanwho’s frown turned into a small open smile, he looked as though he was going totear up all of the sudden.
“Babe” He pulled Usnavi a bit closer and squeaked with asmall delightful chuckle. “You know me so well.”
Given, they had been dating for nearly a year. Usnavi wouldlike to think he knew Johan as well as anyone would. Without much morecomplaints about weather and the killer known as Capitalism they walked downthe street. They took a couple of back avenues around Haven down to 181ststreet. In the mid 80s to early 2000s 181st was an insane placefilled with stores that were three to four floors high. Busy shops used to linethe blocks now? It was pretty empty aside from the McDonalds on one side of thestreet and the Banana Republic on the other.
It was sad at first, to Usnavi, that the place had changedto much. The crowds of families running into places like Lola K and J&J,affordable places for the low income to middle families where entire outfitscould be made for just dollars. Then strolls to the nearby cinema that wasclosed down for good… Instead there were big businesses moving in, moreexpensive stores pushing out the mom and pop shops.
There was a shared sadness between the men when Johan spokeup, breaking Usnavi from his internal dialogue. “So where are you picking upthis overly consumed seasonal spice?”
“There is a place just up the block.” He looked up at Johanwho was already eyeing something else. Usnavi found his line of sight andsighed, of course. A juice bar.
“And why again are we getting this? Your coffee is amazingas is.”
“Well …I was thinking I could amp up the coffee a little, you know appeal to the youthful tastes.” Said the corner store owner (not acoffee shop owner).
Johan arched a brow and have him a small, almost knowingsmirk. “So this has nothing to do with Sonny walking in with a pumpkin spicelatte from Starbucks?”
A hot pang of competitiveness washed over Usnavi. “If I makepumpkin spice, Sonny will never spend money at Four-bucks again.” He startedquickly marching towards a bulk shop, tugging his tall giggling boyfriendalong. Of course Johan saw the hilarity of it, Usnavi didn’t solely sell coffeebut his pride for his store being a gem of his neighborhood was a wicked thrall.
Johan went along with Usnavi’s little pride trip. He boughta ten dollars’ worth of pumpkin spice and walked out almost giddy to try andwin over his cousin, who’s opinion yes was valued, wasn’t exactly the bestopinion of coffee around. As they were walking back, hand in hand, the cold wasreally getting to Usnavi now. His teeth clicked together, his fingers that werewoven around Johan’s trembled loosely. Johan paused for a second and looked himover, then came to a stop. “You know if you want to best the competition youcould figure them out.”
Usnavi turned and noticed Johan and paused in front of aStarbucks. Pain shined through his face, “You too, Johan?”
“Tone down the face Caesar, I’m just saying you’re cold andlooking to outdo your cousin’s and 90% of millennial America’s favorite coffeechain.”
“—and you want to feel hip with the kids, what happened toall that bullshit about consumerism, hm?”
Johan shrugged a bit, “Starbucks is great, they work with veterans, have great benefits, great place for college students. I put my beliefs asidefor the greater good” He leaned over and pulled the door open, and held it forhis man.
With a small huff, Usnavi walked into the danger zone of hiscompetition mumbling under his breath. “…lo sincero que piensa que es…” Usnavilooked around sideeyeing every teen with their Macbook pro opened, headphoneson, fingers skimming iPhones as they absently consumed their drinks without asecond thought. He didn’t even realized Johan had ordered a drink and held itout to him. “What you want me to drink this shit?”
“It’s a nice hot drink, mm steaming and warm.” He took a sipand made a face.
“What?” Usnavi wondered if the coffee was good? Oh god, whatif he actually couldn’t compete. He ripped the coffee from Johan’s hand andtook a shaky sip waiting to be crippled by the flavor and… “huh…you know…itkinda tastes like shit.”
“I can’t believe you think you need to compete with this, babe.”
“Fuck it.” Usnavi started marching out, “I’ve got myreceipt, I’m getting my ten bucks back.”

There’s Something About Ruby
Summary:
Usnavi is tired of Ruby flirting with Johan
Authors note:
Special thanks to @hamiltonhistory and @limpblotter for getting me sucked into this ship. [1] based off of an @limpblotter headcannon
California wasn’t like New York. It was far hotter. The only time Usnavi remembered when his feet burnt this much on the sand was when he vacationed back to the Dominican Republic with Johan for his birthday seven months ago. California wasn’t as hot as Dominican soil, but it was pretty dang close. Another thing that was different about California was all the hipster tourists who either sunbathed on the beaches or walked around the boardwalk with a sparkle in their eye and some kind of iced drink in their hand. Sure, there were hipsters in New York, but they were easy enough to avoid. All you had to do was stay away from places like Times Square or Broadway. In California, the pest problem wasn’t mice or roaches, but rather tourists. But, the biggest difference between California and New York was Usnavi didn’t have the support of his family. California felt like a foreign land with strange people that Usnavi didn’t really know very well, Johan’s family. Now, this wasn’t the first time that Usnavi had come to California. He had been there twice before. During these visits, he met Johan’s sister, Rainbow, and her beautiful family. Jack was adorable, Diane made him laugh. He had helped Junior with his Spanish homework (apparently his spanish teacher didn’t appreciate the swear words Usnavi  had taught Junior), and Zoey was more than eager to hear about eccentric New York fashion. Little did he know, Dre’s family had also moved in with the Johnson family. Dre was nice and the two had a few things in common, however, Usnavi didn’t trust Dre’s parents at all, especially Ruby.
The reason why Usnavi felt he couldn’t trust her was because Ruby turned down coffee. But, it wasn’t just any coffee. It was the coffee that Usnavi had brought from home and made himself. . . No good person would turn down Abuela’s recipe. It was at this moment that Usnavi knew that he had to keep an eye on this woman. The next thing, and arguably the most infuriating thing, was that Ruby couldn’t seem to keep her eyes off of Johan. On their first morning there, Usnavi woke up to the sound of Ruby’s voice radiating down the halls, finding Usnavi’s room, and promptly waking him up. She was making less than appropriate comments about Johan while he was doing his morning yoga. In New York, Johan would do yoga naked in their living room leaving nothing to the imagination. Usnavi’s eyes snapped open and he bolted down the stairs only to find Johan doing yoga in a tank top and sweats. Every day after, Usnavi would force himself awake at ungodly hours to make sure nothing funny happened between Johan and Ruby.
Ruby’s closeness to Johan didn’t stop there. The two acted like close friends. Over the course of the week, Ruby had tagged along on dates that were supposed to be exclusively for Johan and Usnavi. When they got coffee one morning, she had said nothing about Johan’s long, overly complicated coffee order, but she did say Usnavi’s order was too bland. At a poetry slam, she had cheered for Johan, her voice drowned out Usnavi’s own. Usnavi had tried to write a poem for Johan that he was going to say at the slam. But by the end of a night filled with Ruby shamelessly flirting with Johan,  he tucked the poem away in his pocket in a crumpled ball. Ruby’s overly loud personality and his own lack of sleep put Usnavi in a sour mood for the rest of the week, and Johan started to notice. Johan would try to give Usnavi affection, but he had shrugged off every hug, nuzzle, and kiss Johan gave him. Johan was getting desperate, not getting the attention he was used to, and planned on asking Usnavi to join him and Ruby for a wine tasting. He had turned Johan away exclaiming he had a headache. Johan didn’t know what to do. He was too scared of Ruby to turn her down, but he felt his Usnavi drifting away from him. Rainbow suggested that the whole family could go to the beach. Johan could talk to Usnavi in private there. After all, Usnavi loved spending time near the water and Usnavi was more than happy to get out of the house.
However, Usnavi was far from stress free. He was sitting on a beach towel watching Johan play chicken with his nephews and Diane. Diane and Jack were on top laughing and trying to push each other off of Johan and Junior’s shoulders. The scene would have been endearing, if it wasn’t for a certain woman’s voice breaking the serenity of the beach.
“Mm-mm, that Johan is looking fine over there without a shirt confining him like a prison.” She said fanning herself with a magazine. “Lord knows a body like that is sinful. Show me what you got, baby!”
Usnavi turned deep red and pursed his lips in anger. Johan was his! Nobody else was allowed to look at Johan the same way Usnavi did! His fingers curled around Johan’s shirt and the towel that was sitting next to him and clutched it so hard that his knuckles turned white. He cursed in spanish under his breath as he marched from his spot in the sand to the water glaring at the woman commenting on his man’s body. A father covered his daughter’s ears with a gasp after hearing Usnavi call Ruby a “fucking puta”.
When Usnavi reached the water, Diane had finally managed to knock Jack off of Junior’s shoulders causing both of them to hit the water. Johan and Diane cheered for their victory. But when Johan saw Usnavi waiting for him where the water met the land, he playfully tossed Diane into the water and waded back to where his boyfriend was waiting.
“Navi, do you finally want to go swimming? I love swimming in the ocean.  You know, the salt is a good natural exfoliator for your skin. Plus, sea salt is a better alternative to corporate salt mines and-”
Usnavi stopped him by holding the shirt in his face. “Jo, put on a shirt. You’re going to get sunburned.” He muttered taking advantage of the fact that they forgot sunscreen.
Johan took the shirt and put it on after toweling himself off. He knew that Usnavi was upset. Usnavi didn’t realize it, but he really did wear his emotions on his sleeves. After a year, Johan knew exactly what to look for. Puffed out cheeks? Check. Not looking Johan’s eyes? Double check. Playing with his hands? Yup. Johan took Usnavi’s hands into his own and kissed his tense knuckles.
“Let’s get some coffee up at the boardwalk.”
Usnavi was about to protest. He was going to say something about how maybe Johan should ask Ruby instead! But, Johan knew Usnavi better than anyone and turned up the charm. He cupped Usnavi’s cheek and leaned down to kiss him on top of his head.
“Para mi, Navi? Por favor?” Damnit. Johan had been trying to learn Spanish recently when he had decided that he was staying in New York for good after a bitter fight between him and Usnavi. Hearing Johan speak his language, the language of everything he found special in his life, made Usnavi weak and found himself agreeing with Johan.
The two of them walked up to the nearest coffee shop on the boardwalk, a place called Coffee on the Boardwalk, despite Usnavi’s protests of there being too many tourists. After ten minutes, the two of them ordered. Johan got a organic, dark chocolate latte in a porcelain cup with a splash of almond milk, raw honey, shaken after being filtered four times, alkaline water ice cubes, and fat free soy whip [1]. Usnavi got a black dark roast. Johan gave him a sad smile. His Navi only got dark roast when he was in a sour mood. The two of them walked outside and sat on the patio furniture, so that they could listen to the sounds of the ocean. After a couple of minutes, Johan saw Usnavi start to relax and he reached across the table to hold Usnavi’s hand. He smiled softly and rubbed soft circles into Usnavi’s palm.
“What’s wrong?” he muttered. It was a conversation between the two of them. Private. Secure. Usnavi relaxed.
“Nothing.” Johan gave Usnavi a look. Usnavi sighed. “Alright, I guess I’m just upset with the way Ruby is looking at you. She’s stealing you away from me.” He stopped for a moment trying to keep it together. All of his troubles and worries he had been bottling up inside were overflowing and rushing out at once. A couple of tears escaped his eyes and slid down his cheeks. He closed his eyes and pulled his hand away from Johan’s and pulled them into his lap.  “This week was supposed to be special, Jo. I had a lot planned that didn’t work out. I was going to. . . Carajo. . I wrote a poem and everything, and she just-”
Usnavi stopped when he felt a pair of strong arms wrap around him. He put his head on Johan’s shoulder and wept into it. All of the stresses of the week slowly rolled off his shoulders as Johan whispered to him in soft French that Usnavi couldn’t understand. The moment felt so intimate. . . Usnavi felt protected, secure, endeared. . . Usnavi felt loved. Once he had stopped crying, Johan wiped the lingering tears away with a calloused thumb.
“Usnavi, mon amour, I love you more than life itself and nothing is going to change that.” Johan rested his forehead on Usnavi’s. “You’re my Navi, and I’m yours. I would never let anyone take that from us. Je T'aime, so much.”
Usnavi wrapped his arms around Johans neck and pulled him in for a long, innocent kiss. “Te amo.” he whispered back afterwards. Ruby wouldn’t be the first woman to hit on Johan, and she wouldn’t be the last. But, no matter what happened, Usnavi knew that he was the home Johan would return to, and that would never change.

“What do you want to do first?” Johan asked excitedly, dragging his boyfriend by the hand.
“Doesn’t matter to me,” Usnavi shrugged with a smile.
Johan shot him a withering look. “Navi, this is your first time at Disneyland. You call the shots.”
Usnavi rolled his eyes and looked around. “Fine, uh... how about the Mark Twain Riverboat?”
Johan made a face. “Ugh what are you, ninety?”
Usnavi rolled his eyes again. “You’re seriously like a man-child. You decide where we go, then.”
“Let’s go to the haunted mansion,” Johan grinned. Reluctantly, Usnavi followed along. They cut to the front of the line with the passes Dre had procured for them and went inside.
Just walking through the house to the ride, Usnavi began to regret agreeing to this ride. He was not the bravest when it came to scares. He held tight to Johan’s hand.
Once they were on the ride, Usnavi sat tensely, keeping his eyes wide open as if that would ward off the fake ghosts. He managed to keep it together until the last moments of the ride when a particularly scary ghoul showed itself rather suddenly. Usnavi let out a shrill scream, immediately clapping a hand over his mouth, his entire face going red. Utterly embarrassed, he buried his face in Johan’s shoulder (which was shaking with uncontained mirth).
Once they emerged from the mansion, Usnavi remained in sulking silence, his face still burning red.
“So...” Johan said, biting his lip to stop himself from laughing. “I’m a man-child?”
“Shut up,” Usnavi grumbled abashedly.
“C’mere,” Johan laughed, pulling Usnavi into a hug and kissing his temple. Usnavi hid his face again, growing even redder. Johan laughed softly. “Wanna go on the Mark Twain ride?”
Silently, Usnavi nodded into his chest, and they made their way to the water, holding hands.

From My Rotting Body, Flowers Shall Grow and I Am in Them and that is Eternity
Usnavi sat on his couch fiddling with the ring box, the couch creaking every once in awhile when he would shift. Johan rather liked the couch, even though his sister chewed him out for allowing Jack and Junior to sit on it even though the sag in the middle was nearly brushing the ground. Benny joked often that he was going to cut the legs off, and finish the job. Usnavi pulled out his phone and tried to call Johan. “Hey it's Johan. I can't-”
Usnavi looked at the clock and saw that it was a little past 2 in the morning. He had a knot form in his stomach as he recalled Dre and Rainbow words.
“He can't commit, he's lazy, entitled, and a mooch.”
“Dre! My brother, as Dre so rudely put it, likes to be constantly on the move, he struggles with commitment but does love you and I see that he is trying to do his best, and he does love you.”
Usnavi checked his phone seeing there was still the apology text from him. Usnavi tossed his legs on the couch as he reached around for Johan’s cardigan that he left lying on the back of the couch for a cover when the apartment got too cold. Usnavi pulled Johan’s cardigan over smelling the mixture of coconut and cinnamon. In the back of his mind Usnavi knew Johan wouldn’t up and leave for fear of the Benny reproductions, but in the forefront of his mind he couldn’t get over the fact he and Johan had a fight, Johan wanted Usnavi to come with him to California, and Usnavi didn’t want to go because two weeks was a long time for the bodega to be closed, and for the barrio to be left to fend by itself. Usnavi checked his phone again only seeing the text Johan sent as an apology.
‘When you’re right, you’re right. I shouldn’t have kept pressing you to go to Cali. While I’m gone look into getting Benny some help for his Milky Way addiction. He and Dre could bond over that. Anyway, I’m going to go out. Shop, check out a few bars. I’ll see you when I get home.'
“Where are you? He wouldn’t just up and leave without everything?” Usnavi thought as he drifted off to sleep,”Maybe his phone died and time got away from him.”
Usnavi jolted awake confused then relaxed realising he was woken up by his phone ringing happily, he answered the phone without checking the caller ID,”Hello?”
Rainbow’s voice came through, slightly frantic,”Usnavi? Thank God. Is Johan with you?”
Usnavi shook his head,”He hasn’t contacted you?” Rainbow’s voice was nervous,”Not since earlier, he said the two of you got into a fight so he was going to go out for a bit then, make up to you. I’ve tried calling him but I’m only getting voice mail.”
Usnavi tapped the ring box in his pocket,”Well, you said he wandered off a lot when he was younger, right? He probably just forgot to charge his phone.”
“Yeah, I guess you're right. Will you call me when he comes back?” “Of course, Rainbow. I’ll talk to you later.” Usnavi said hearing the call ending beep. He slid his phone back into his pocket and began to make a cup of coffee. When he heard a knock on the door, he walked very calmly and didn’t nearly run into the end table as he calmly opened the door seeing a petite police officer standing in the doorway with an unreadable expression, she was about a head shorter than Usnavi, not exactly an uncommon occurrence but to see this height on a cop was a little alarming.
The officer stared at Usnavi for a second,”Mr. De La Vega?”
Usnavi nodded,”May I help you?” “My name is Detective Gutierrez, you were named as Johan Johnson’s emergency contact.”
Usnavi opened up the door a bit more,”What happened?” Detective Gutierrez took a deep breath,”There was an accident. We believe Mr. Johnson was a victim of a hate crime. He was wearing a Black Lives Matter t-shirt and was around a well known gay bar. He-” Usnavi cut her off,”Is he okay? Can I see him?”
She shook her head, her expression sympathetic,”I’m sorry, he was pronounced dead on his way to the hospital last night. We’ve been trying to track you down in the meantime.”
Usnavi felt his knees go out from underneath him and Detective Gutierrez grabbed him before he hit the ground, as Usnavi pressed his hands to his mouth and let put a quiet gasp,”Are you sure?”
“We got his name from his California ID, and he was lucid enough to confirm it for us.” She kneeled down next to him, going to reassuringly touch his shoulder but thought better of it,”I’m sorry for your loss, Mr. De La Vega.”
Usnavi stood up leaning heavily on the door frame, he offered his hand to Detective Gutierrez and she allowed him to pull her up. Usnavi’s voice was shaky and quiet,”When can I see him?”
“At your earliest convenience, he’s at New York Presbyterian.” Detective Gutierrez flinched when her pager loudly, there was muffled talking on the end, and she answered it,”Detective Gutierrez. What? Yeah, I’m on my way. Mr. De La Vega, I’m sorry for your lose, but here is my number incase you would like to contact me for information.”
Detective Gutierrez began to head down the hall and Usnavi crumpled the paper she gave him and tossed it on the end table, he stumbled to the couch and grabbed Johan’s cardigan, inhaling the scent of coconut and cinnamon, he felt his eyes grow hot and he buried his face in the cardigan, trying to muffle his cries. Usnavi felt as if he’d been hit in the ribs with a bag of rocks, his lungs felt like they weren’t getting enough oxygen, and his heart felt like it was being pulled apart and stuck in a blender. Usnavi felt a wave of anger come over him as he flipped the coffee table in front of him, scattering Johan’s papers and notebooks to the floor. He pulled the cardigan close and began to wring the fabric. He looked at his phone, his chest slowly tightening, he thought of what Rainbow said,”Call me when you hear from him.”
Usnavi jolted when his door banged open, and Sonny stood there panting,”Usnavi? Pete said there was a cop outside the bodega and when I asked around they said the cop was looking for you…” Sonny trailed off, looking around at Usnavi curled up on the couch and the flipped over coffee table and the scattered papers,”Navi? What happened?”
Usnavi took a deep shuddering breath and tried to get through the sentence without breaking down,”The cop showed up to tell…..to tell me that Johan…… that he died.”
Sonny shut the door and sat down on the middle cushion of the couch,”What happened?”
“They think he was a victim of a hate crime.” Usnavi looked at Sonny teary eyed,”Sonny, how am I gonna tell his family?”
Sonny swallowed and looked at his cousin,”I’ll do it?”
Usnavi furrowed his brow at his cousin,”Seriously?”
Sonny nodded,”You aren’t in the best condition at the moment. I’ll call them.” Usnavi stood up, lurching slightly,”I’ll be on the fire escape.”
Sonny dialed Rainbow’s number, trying not to think to deeply about what happened to Johan, not if he wanted to keep it together. He cleared his throat, as Rainbow answered the phone. “Hello, Usnavi?” Rainbow asked.
“No, it’s Sonny, Usnavi’s cousin.” Sonny said taking a deep breath.
“Oh! Have you heard anything from my brother?”
Sonny’s eyes felt hot and he squeezed them shut,”Not exactly.”
There was some muffled conversation on the other end and Sonny heard some faint shuffling, Rainbow’s voice came back concerned,”What happened? Is everything okay?”
Sonny shook his head,”No, you should come to New York though. Something happened. Johan is dead.”
Rainbow’s voice was quiet and disbelieving,”What? What happened?”
Sonny shrugged,”The cops think it was a hate crime.”
He heard Rainbow take a moment to try and calm her frantic breathing, her voice was trying to be level,”Let me talk to Usnavi.”
Usnavi came back into the living room after Sonny called for him, he took the phone from Sonny and hopped for his voice to not break,”Hello?” Rainbow’s voice was thick,”Is it true? Is my brother…. Is he dead?”
Usnavi rubbed his chest,”Yes, I’m sorry.”
Rainbow let out a sharp gasp and her voice was ,”Excuse me, I need to go.”

2. JOHSNAVI PLZ
They CANNOT be in the same kitchen together
Usnavi is very much a methodical but feeling cooker, he was taught by his mother and Abuela how to cook so he goes purely off “feeling” and memory
Which drives Johan insane who uses pinterest recipes for nearly everything
Johan is also a strict vegan while Usnavi is a typical Dominican (meat is a big part of their meals)
Johan tends to give him disapproving looks from outside the kitchen
It turns into a passive aggressive match of who gets there first and who does what
What usually ends up happening they make two separate meals for themselves
So to save them from a lot of the strife, Usnavi does make his meals after he makes something from Johan
Or they go out to eat which fairs better
Later on in their relationship Usnavi does eat a lot healthier thanks to Johan
