Fran Drescher In Talks With Sony For ‘The Nanny’ Continuation Movie

It’s been 23 years since “The Nanny” went off the air after spending six seasons on CBS, and in the time since, the show has become a cult classic, with fans all around the world reciting lines from their favorite episodes and emulating the many fashions of Ms. Fran Fine, played by the legendary Fran Drescher. In early 2021, HBO Max acquired streaming rights to all 146 episodes and had given a new generation of fans a chance to laugh, live and love alongside the Fines and the Sheffields, but in a world filled with reboot after reboot, one has to wonder when we’ll ever get to find out what the clan has been up to since we last saw them head off to Los Angeles to support Max Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy; Victor Cassadine, “General Hospital”) as one of his Broadway shows was being developed into a TV show by Hollywood producers. Now comes word that Drescher has been talking with the show’s production studio, Sony, about continuing the story as a movie.

In a recent “Entertainment Tonight” interview at Variety’s Power of Women event, Drescher told Deidre Behar, “There’s some talk about maybe a movie … we’re in the talking stage now with our parent company, Sony.” She noted, “It won’t be a musical,” referencing previous discussions about a Broadway iteration of the show being in development. “The musical is going to be set in the ’90s as was the series. The movie will probably be more in the present and incorporate new characters.”

While she expects characters from the original show to be featured, Drescher explains, “[the movie would] dovetail into a whole other character story.” Should it feature the beloved characters and their familiar portrayers in some capacity, it’s understood that we’ll finally get to meet the adult versions of Fran and Maxwell’s twins, Jonah Samuel and Eve Catherine Sheffield.

Drescher hopes that whatever happens with a musical, continuation movie, or even a reboot TV series, fans receive the same message they had during the show’s original run, which is as follows:

“This is as current and present as it’s ever been. So, it’s extremely important that the audience feels like they’re really seeing the proper representation of all the characters and the relationships and they understand how noble in many ways the character of Ms. Fine was.” She adds, “And [understand] the global message of that show was that it doesn’t matter what you look like or what you sound like, it’s what in your heart that counts and that was what she proved week in and week out.”

RevPro Uprising 2022 was the worst RevPro York Hall show, but it was still quite good.

Dan Moloney vs. Luke Jacobs (c) vs. Robbie X vs. Will Kaven - British Cruiserweight Championship.

It was decent and explosive, however it had too many shenanigans, which hurt the end of Luke Jacob's reign and the start of Robbie X's, he was good, as was everyone else, but it was never super high level. ***¼

Dani Luna vs. Kanji (c) - Southside Queen of the Ring

Dani Luna is a good addition to the RevPro women's roster, she has a good power game, and I am excited for her match with Alex Windsor, Kanji is good as she usually is. ***¼.

Sunshine Machine vs. Greedy Souls (c) - British Tag Team Championship

It was a street fight and not a very good one, there was decent brawling, but on the other hand, there was sloppy stuff as well as a lack of good tag stuff, quite disappointing, as I like both teams a lot, but the build was not good, and this was not as good as it should have been.

Leon Slater vs. Zack Sabre Jr.

This was very good stuff, of course ZSJ was great at his technical stuff, however, Leon Slater also proved to be good at it as well, along with his amazing high flying, so he is proving to have a great amount of upside, and is just great already. I am happy ZSJ is back at RevPro as he was great here (like he is in NJPW) and he has many new people to face. ****

Great-O-Khan vs. Zak Knight (replacing RKJ (c)) - British Heavyweight Championship.

It was alright, but very uninteresting, I think O-Khan is fairly good and charismatic, but he is not too amazing in the ring. Also, Zak Knight is pretty dull, at Royal Quest II, Zak was a terrible replacement for JONAH, he bad cheap gear and was boring in ring, he skipped out on his Sheffield date, and here, he looked a bit better, but still not worthy of being on York Hall, he should have been squashed. ***.

Connor Mills vs. Michael Oku.

I enjoyed this a lot, the build was very good, if a bit much post break up, there was good violence, and nice action, I did not find it to be as good as there previous match at Epic Encounter, but I think it was still good. ****

Will Ospreay vs. Tomohiro Ishii

A great match, fun strong style action from both, while Ospreay also bring his athletic stuff to the table, however, it did suffer for a lack of build amd did not feel as big as it could have done, but still, it was the match of the show. ****¼.

You start picking clothes based on what she would wear in the year 2000s (if you’re a millennial like me 😜) and you also start wearing boots or high heels.

You become more chattier (even if you’re shy as anything)

You take note of which outfits Fran is wearing when she’s married to Maxwell (and, no, her wedding dress and negligee doesn’t count 😂)

You also note the Sheffield kids’ and their age differences and base it off a particular season (even more so when Maxwell calls Fran by her first name or “darling” etc then you know it’s between S5&6)

Designs for the grown up Sheffield twins because surprise The Nanny is one of my obscure interests.

A few ideas I had for them was that Jonah is a singer in a band and a big fan of Stone Temple Pilots, Maggie introduced him to the band and gave him t-shirt. He’s the ‘rebel‘ of the two

Eve is an aspiring book writer, she writes Y/A fantasy novels but is also very interested in the theatre, mainly in set designs and writing scripts.

Jonah pierced his ears by himself (minus the industrial one) and actually did Eve’s as well. They also both inherited Max’s grey streak, it was shown that he had it in his youth (most likely just for shits and giggles) but I thought it’d be cool to incorporate.

A thing I’m dreaming about: 

The Nanny gets a revival (like so many 90s shows do these days), we get to see the people together again, fandom (re-?)awakens, there are gifs of new and old episodes, there’s discussion, new people discover the show and watch the old episodes, everybody’s happy.

All I know about the nanny is from what you've reblogged, so this might be ridiculous, but I wonder what a Spider-Man crossover would be like?

The post I just reblogged reminded me that I had this waaaay back in my drafts!! So edited to finish it up and also to say that the entire The Nanny series is now streaming HBO.

The plot of The Nanny is pretty simple: after her fiancé breaks off their relationship and fires her from his bridal store, Fran Fine accidentally nets herself a job as the nanny for a rich goyishe family, consisting of widower Maxwell Sheffield and his three children: shy teenager Maggie, middle child troublemaker Brighton, and neurotic family baby Gracie. A Spider-Man/The Nanny crossover would be ridiculously easy, actually, because they’re both set in New York, they both have protagonists who hail from Queens (Forest Hills vs Flushing) and they both have theater connections (Mr. Sheffield is a producer and Mary Jane is an actress; a number of Nanny plots deal with the musicals Mr. Sheffield is working on).

It begins, naturally, when Mr. Sheffield acquires the rights to Broadway’s first musical about New York’s very own Spider-Man, tentatively titled Switch On The Night. He doesn’t really think it will be a success, but as Niles the butler reminds him he passed on CATS, so what does he know. Besides, Spider-Man is Brighton’s favorite superhero, so by putting on a play about him Mr. Sheffield hopes that it’ll bring them closer together. Maybe Brighton will finally think his old man is cool.

(”Spider-Man is so creepy,” says Maggie with a shudder. “Ugh, can you imagine dating a guy who dresses up like a spider?”

“The mask indicates a deeply troubled psyche,” intones Gracie, brushing her doll’s hair. “Perhaps a traumatic event in his youth, leading to a desire to hide his true self.”

“Gracie, honey. Want a cookie?” Fran asks.

“Okay!” says Gracie.)

Mary Jane, of course, books the lead in the Spider-Man play, much to Peter’s chagrin, because the last thing he wants to deal with is a musical version of his life, but what can he do? Fran is unimpressed at the prospect of meeting her -- “another shiksa chorus girl with legs up to here” -- until they come face to face while wearing the exact same Moschino outfit. (“You must have hit a real jackpot at Saks!” Cue Fran Drescher's famous laugh.) Mr. Sheffield thinks Mary Jane is a lovely girl, and very talented, but he’s not quite sure about her boyfriend, that Parker fellow. He seems very squirrely, if you ask him. 

“Who asked you?” Fran says. “Those eyes, those shoulders. What a dreamboat! And a Jew, too. If he was a doctor, I tell you, we’d be married already. But a freelance photographer? My mother would never forgive me.”

(Also, of course, it comes out that C.C. has a connection to the Osborns and that they go way back. "Shame about that whole Goblin business," she says. "Mummy always said he was an unusual one."

"Flying around on a broomstick, terrorizing innocent people?" Niles says. "No wonder you can't find a man; your soulmate was right there waiting in the wings of a Halloween store.")

The musical is a spectacular failure because J Jonah Jameson won't stop writing editorials about how Maxwell Sheffield is glorifying a dangerous vigilante and also because it's bad, Fran is kidnapped by a villain who mistakes her for star of the show MJ because they're both wearing the same pair of tight sequined pants, and she gets rescued by Spider-Man, who she declares a Jew as soon as he opens his mouth. Brighton gets his autograph so it's not all a complete loss for Mr. Sheffield, except in the financial department when the musical closes after a month. The last shot of the episode is Aunt May accusing Yetta of cheating as they play canasta.
