right now I'm calling it, this is a Christmas episode (?) and we get a Kelly Clarkson music cue for Wrapped in Red, one of my favorite christmas songs/albums.

Reindeer! yes, Christmas episode!! oh, I wonder what sort of terrible emergency will befall these people. Wife of a pilot, aww. Except oh no! Pilot double life! Is this how he has every other Christmas?!?!

diaz house christmas!!!!! i love eddie being so low-key about putting the decorations on the tree and chris being absolutely particular. I can see you getting away with two of them, but Three??? i know you're hosting big beefy firefighters (presumably), but as someone who also has big family holiday get-togethers that is Too Much unless you're intentionally sending people home with leftovers. aww, three less! May is working! Time and a half IS good, but since it's christmas it should actually be double time. Can't believe the city of LA is being cheap with their first responders! i mean I can, but. they shouldn't. Bobby's deep-frying ONE of the turkeys? he's got two turkeys??? that's so extra.

"where's the wreath?" there's literally already one hanging up on your sliding glass door? but also yes, she did find another one! oh no, apartment collapse on top of the car! okay, i really thought he was going to be dead, but it's just the feeling of watching a kid not know if their dad is gonna live. awwww, they can't go back in the building, they have to red-tag it! :(((( reasonable for safety reasons, but really fucking depressing. bobby doesn't fuck around with building safety. ESPECIALLY at christmas.

hen and denny are there! hen and buck talking about being less than merry, but happy for the people they do have! hen really is besties with everyone. she's got a bestie in every family unit. i could say a thing about the "where's karen?" and "where's eddie?" parallel, but I Shan't, because we did see Chris and Denny greet each other, and also it gets us from one conversation to another. (if that were not the case, it would still not be out of place, though!)

In a Disney film? I know the sexism & shit is realistic for the period, I know it is, but it grinds the everloving piss out of my gears regardless; ALSO why the fuck didn't we get to see Bernie (Chris Pine) & Mel (Beau Knapp) reunite at the end??? They were besties and the only reason Mel stayed behind (reluctantly) was because he had the sniffles. Do you mean to tell me that he wouldn't have gone outside with everyone else when the boat came in - the freezing cold & his health be damned for a minute - to greet his friend who could have died at any moment while Mel was busy being a human burrito sipping hot cocoa (idk) while listening to what's going on out on the water over the radio, never certain he'll see his friends again, not able to do anything to help them, in the safety & comfort of the Coast Guard station???? Uhhh bullshit. Of course he would've gone out there!!! So where the hell was he????? Asleep in the lunch room suddenly???? *desk flip*

Fellas, is it gay to say hi to your best friend and hug hi- oh, it is? Silly me haha. Then we better make sure it's crystal clear for the audience that Bernie is definitely going to marry a woman to remind them he's 110% straight and a man and has absolutely nobody else he cares about or who care about him, and we need to definitely not show even five seconds of affection between two male friends! ☹

While we're on this subject (I'm on a roll now so can't stop til I say this lol soz) I was reminded during the film how toxic masculinity limits the acceptable feelings men can express, without fear of ridicule, to anger & lust... except if they're in the middle of disasters or other traumatic events, e.g. war, then it's way more acceptable for men to be scared & to cry & be vulnerable & concerned for the emotional wellbeing of other men. And rightly so, they're human after all and those situations suck. It's scary and painful watching your friends be hurt/die right in front of you and to also be staring death in the face yourself with very limited options & chance of survival. Men more readily accept and are even moved by these expressions when they see it in these extreme situations, but as soon as it appears in the context of Normal Everyday Life the response is "don't be such a girl, grow some balls". *sigh* The patriarchy is on nobody's side in the end. Cishet dudes help us burn it down challenge!

And, of course, there's nothing wrong with the little romantic subplot - it's the fact that Hollywood constantly locks platonic love in the trunk and takes romance on a nice Sunday drive that makes my blood boil.

Gastroworld: A Canadian Attempt To Recreate the Travis Scott Meal

VANCOUVER – Travis Scott knows how to make an entrance.

In September, the rapper drove his candy red LaFerrari to the McDonald’s in Downey, CA, to help promote his much hyped partnership with the fast food juggernaut. Located about 15-minutes southeast of Downtown Los Angeles, the small stand is the oldest heirloom in the McDonald’s family. Preserved thanks to an early franchise agreement, the restaurant operated outside Ray Kroc’s control for nearly three decades, before being brought into the fold in 1990. These days it exists as something of a McCurio – a McDonald’s outpost devoid of modern McDonald’s designs. Familiar yet foreign, it serves as a sort of post-war cosplay, a place where product is prioritized and Instagram likes flow freely. A place perfect, in other words, for Travis Scott.

For those living outside the Hypebeast/Hypebae binary,  Travis Scott is a rapper, producer, and Kardashian procreator whose best ideas are usually other people’s ideas, but with better marketing. A byproduct of the Tumblr-era, his work carries a sense of reckless re-blogging; ideas are stripped from source material and repackaged for immediate consumption, often with little concern for optics or even legal repercussions. Beats, melodies, ad libs (Straight Up!), and even nicknames (La Flame), are all fair game. As Jason “Them Jeans” Stewart explains “He’s shamelessly taken bits and pieces, or entire identities, and resold them to fans who don’t know to care, or don’t care to know.” Nothing is wholly original, nor is it expected to be. In an era where curation is commonly confused for creation, Travis Scott operates like a wavy Criterion Collection, slapping his Cactus Jack seal of approval on a wide range of brands including Reese’s Puffs, Hot Wheels, Fortnite and Nike.

For years, the latter served as the crown jewel in his Infinity Gauntlet, but the pit stop in Downey suggests McDonald’s was in fact his key to controlling the universe. Fans got wind of the surprise visit and seized their moment to rage with La Flame. Videos show Travis signing cereal boxes from the hood of a car, as a mass of young men, aged 18 - 34, struggle to contain themselves. Police estimate as many as 500 people attended the non-sanctioned moshpit, for which Travis and the restaurant were each fined $100. Not since the Szechuan Sauce riots of 2017 has McDonald’s so clearly captured the zeitgeist. And while you might expect the merch to move (at a supersized mark-up no less), the real surprise seems to be that his less wearable food-merch also sold out in several markets.

The first, and possibly last, burger to ever go SICKO MODE, the Travis Scott Meal took McDonald’s Quarter Pounder and flipped it faster than the Texas Cyclone, adding bacon, lettuce, and another slice of cheese. He explained the changes in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, saying “I might order my sandwich a little weird but that’s the whole thing – that’s the whip.” To complete the Butterfly Effect, he added a medium Sprite, a medium side of French Fries, and barbeque sauce to the combo. The limited edition meal, exclusive to the U.S. and only available until October 4, was so popular it strained McDonald’s supply chain as hungry customers looked to sink their teeth into the ‘The Fortnite guy burger.’

North of the 49th parallel, however, it was a different story. Canadian drive-thru operators were not only confused when I said “You know why I’m here,”, they seemed genuinely terrified to hear 3500 rattling over their headsets. If I was to taste the hottest combo of 2020, it seemed, I’d have to take the Rodeo to the kitchen. Specifically, the kitchen at my parents house.

Recreating the McDonald’s hamburger experience, however, is a Sisyphean task. On paper, the Quarter Pounder is little more than beef, salt and pepper. In practice, though,  those ingredients fail to capture the sandwich’s unique taste sensation. Determined to do Travis proud, I scoured the internet for recipes, only to realize they were all pretty much the same: divide ground beef into patties, flatten them, and then dust aggressively with salt and pepper, cooking on medium-heat. When the centre was warm-red I delicately topped the patties with two slices of American cheese.

I then prepared the store-bought toppings, frying the bacon in the left over hamburger grease, slicing onion and lettuce, and then toasting the sesame seed brioche buns in a small pan with butter. McDonald’s cooks their french fries in beef fat, which fortunately for my complexion wasn’t an option this time around, so I decided to bake my frozen friends per the instructions on the bag. To get weird, I needed to recreate McDonald’s signature barbecue sauce, which has tangy taste of well-worn leather chaps doused in moonshine and set ablaze. With my chaps at the cleaners and the moonshine still percolating, I settled for a combination of Kraft and Bullseye BBQ sauces, heated in the microwave for 30 seconds on high. Last, but not least, I filled a large glass tumbler with ice and then poured myself a crisp Sprite. The carousel began to spin.

What followed can only be described as a Travis Scott Feast. The tanginess of the barbecue sauce played perfectly off the burger and its savoury bacon. While the fries were no match for those in the little red box, they proved to be pretty damn delicious. The biggest surprise, though, was the Sprite, which I actually refilled more than once –perhaps the first time I’ve ever truly obeyed my thirst.

As I gorged myself like a Studio Ghibli creature, I realized the meal wasn’t what mattered. I had simply been looking to participate in something larger than myself. In his terrific book The Hamburger: A History, food writer Josh Ozersky argues America needed symbols like the hamburger more than other countries, due to sheer size vagueness of the nation, that “America is the great icon making nation because it requires icons more than any other nation.” In this sense, Travis Scott is an icon. Like Michael Jordan, the last celebrity to have an official McDonald’s burger, his essence is no longer tethered to his corporeal form. Instead, he’s a reverse swoosh on pair of Jordans. He’s a dissociated voice shouting “OH MY GOD” in the dark. He’s a theme park that closed for business in 2005 and was demolished in 2006. Like a shining ‘M’ off the side of the highway, Travis is just the latest tether to a distant past everyone remembers but no one experienced; a collective fever dream that insists the knowable memory is kinder and more preferable than an unknowable future. By collaborating with our nostalgia, he becomes our nostalgia.

It is, as they say, lit.

NEW MUSIC:

·         Fresh off the release of their latest album NINE, Blink-182 joined Goody Grace as he bared his heart on his new song “Scumbag.” The release marks the second this year for Grace, who dropped “Wasting Time” in July.

·         Earlier last Wednesday, Tom DeLonge took to Instagram to share a short teaser video of some new Angels and Airwaves music. The band dropped their track “Kiss & Tell” back in the summer, and now fans received a new music video for the song.

·         To celebrate what was his favorite holiday, Lil Peep posthumously released his highly anticipated EP, Goth Angel Sinner. Originally announced in October 2017, the genre-bending EP is accompanied by the release of an official music video for the track “When I Lie.”

·         PUP’s latest music video endeavor involved the band bringing their song “See You at Your Funeral��� to the afterlife. Directed by Joe Stakun, the music video features the band members as various spooky characters.

·         Alt singer-songwriter Skye unveiled his brand new track “Voices,” featuring late rapper XXXTentacion. The powerful new single also features an interpolation of the classic Blink-182 track, “I Miss You.”

·         YUNGBLUD’s “Die a Little” made its debut on the season 3 soundtrack of the hit show, 13 Reasons Why, which dropped earlier this summer on August 23rd. Previously, ahead of his debut full-length, he teamed up with Charlotte Lawrence on “Falling Skies” for season 2.

·         Rapper Blackbear announced the new song in a new interview with Capital FM, and says it will be out before the end of the year. The special track will feature a collaboration with YUNGBLUD and Marshmello.

·         Foo Fighters have been releasing EPs of live tracks, covers and demo songs for the past few months and returned with yet another. The latest and seventh overall EP, 02050525, saw the band covering Jawbreaker and the Passions, as well as three demo tracks.

·         Panic! at the Disco released their new song for the Frozen 2 soundtrack, “Into the Unknown.” While Elsa herself, Idina Menzel, performs the track in the movie, P!ATD recorded their own version for the end credits.

·         Billie Eilish said in an Instagram story video she posted over the weekend there will be two new tracks coming shortly, as well as a new music video for her track “Xanny.” The musician didn’t give a timeline for the new songs or video.

TOUR ANNOUNCEMENTS:

·         Twenty One Pilots were forced to postpone last week’s show in Salt Lake City due to unsafe conditions as a result of weather. Slated to perform at the Vivint Smart Home Arena, snowfall and slick roads made them unable to make it to the show on time.

·         Motionless in White and Beartooth announced a co-headlining tour last Tuesday. The Diseased and Disguised Tour, which is inspired by each band’s most recent release, will kick off in January, with support acts and additional dates to be revealed in the coming weeks.

·         Green Day played their third studio album, Dookie, in full during an intimate one-off show in Madrid last Wednesday. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of their breakthrough album, the band also added an additional 12 songs to the setlist.

·         Poppy performed two songs live on WWE‘s NXT last Wednesday. Rocking the house at Full Sail University, she opened the show with “I Disagree” and escorted wrestler Io Shirai out to the ring with “Scary Mask.”

·         Last week, Emo Night Phx celebrated Halloween with some incredible performances and resident DJs, including one from Jonny Craig, who took the stage to perform an Isles and Glaciers track. Prior to this, a rough demo of “Clush” was originally released in January 2009.

·         After much teasing from the band members, Creeper finally made their return to the stage one year after breaking up. The band performed an intimate gig at Club 229 in London, debuting their latest single “Born Cold.”

·         After a few days of speculation at a new tour, Sleeping With Sirens unveiled their next round of dates. Set It Off, Belmont and Point North will be joining the band on the Medicine Tour in January.

·         Poppy announced the I Disagree U.S. Tour, inspired by her upcoming album of the same name. Kicking off in late January in San Francisco, the dates run through February just prior to a previously announced U.K./Europe tour in March.

·         Grayscale revealed their Nella Vita North American Tour Part II 2020 tour dates. Hot Mulligan, WSTR, and LURK will join them on the run, which kicks off in January in Wilmington, Delaware.

OTHER NEWS:

·         SWMRS guitarist/vocalist Max Becker was sent to the intensive care unit and is now in a rehab clinic following an encounter with black ice in Denver. Two touring crew members, Natalie Somekh and Josh Berl, were also injured in the van accident.

·         Arizona-based alt act Halocene shared a 12-minute video outlining why they believe The Masked Singer Australia ripped their arrangement (which includes an original riff) of the Billie Eilish mega-hit “Bad Guy.” The band first shared their cover in April.

·         In the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine, Green Day vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong sat down with Billie Eilish for a special “Musicians on Musicians” issue. Eilish expressed her love of Green Day while Armstrong shared his admiration for the 17-year-old artist’s music.

·         Filmmaker/actor Kevin Smith recently joined Joe Rogan on his podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience,” for episode #1372. While there, he helped confirm that Rogan is a cousin of My Chemical Romance’s frontman and bassist, Gerard and Mikey Way.

·         Taylor Swift recently joined scene royalty at the self-described “most emo dinner party” alongside Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz and Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie. Swift hit Beats 1 with Zane Lowe, where she discussed the event.

·         At 2 p.m. ET on Halloween, activity began on a new Instagram account for My Chemical Romance. An hour later, the band triumphantly marked their return to the scene by announcing a return show on their Instagram, which sold out instantly.

·         After almost a year’s worth a teasing and a six-episode series on YouTube, the Shane x Jeffree Conspiracy Collection officially launched. The long-awaited collab of the two YouTube megastars, the launch broke both Star and Morphe’s websites in the process.

·         Actress Kristen Stewart played host to this past weekend’s Saturday Night Live episode, donning iconic Hayley Williams hair and singing the pop-punk parody, “Corporate Nightmare.” The (real-life) Paramore frontwoman later saw the skit, and took to Instagram to create the perfect memes.
