rambly inception thoughts p.2

this has been kicked off, specifically, by disliking that i failed to include yusuf in this post but there’s already so much going on there re: exact limits/mechanics of imagination in dreams, how to call down projections, moral relativism, crack chara psych, and speculating on the future of ari’s career--and i explained most of it poorly anyway so it’s probably for the best!

to start with, i’ve always imagined that there’s a huge variety in the caliber/class of chemist u can hire in dreamshare. the title probably applies even to people whose capability starts and stops at sourcing base product for somnacin and/or the finished drug. the next level up can maybe mix up different kinds to standard specifications. idk how much education/training u’d need to be able to do this, bc i v much do not chemistry, but i’d bet there’s a lot of variety in ppl’s qualifications in this category, too. a standard formula might affect different ppl slightly differently, like any psychotropic drug (is that even the most sensible analogy to real-world science? idk and i don’t want to risk hours of ultimately fruitless wikipedia spiralling), but in the same vein, the variances will all probably fall within a reasonable range of the same functionality. without, like, some sort of neuro degree, probably, the most fine-tuning a chemist could do is optimize doses/known variants of the drug through trial and error in preparation for a job.

so, just like the rest of the team, yusuf is obviously a total powerhouse in his field. like i said, it must take sophisticated knowledge of brain chemistry in order to do what he did on the fischer job, as well as the same mad genius as the rest of them. (as an aside, can i just say how utterly delightful a team dynamic is “group of geniuses who surround themselves with enough people who are the same kind of batshit to normalize it”? i’m weak) and idk how someone gets famous in like neurochem but yusuf is so brilliant he was probably p well known. js imagine the comedic potential of whatever rising-star chemist meeting yusuf and js going dr. ____?! who published those completely revolutionary but completely balls-to-the-wall studies on x and then after throwing the discipline into an uproar either a) dropped off the face of the earth and is now known as smth of an urban legend/cryptid in the community or b) still corresponds w experts in the field but now about the wildest shit and ppl kind of have to mythologize/not think too hard abt the dude who walks in ppl’s heads in order not to risk js breaking everything

so yusuf knows his shit and his initial assertion that 3 levels is impossible can be trusted to carry a lot of weight. which means the fact that he proceeded to do it more than secures his place in the cast of demonstrable prodigies

now, bc this is ostensibly a continuation of a post that’s loosely focused on charas’ moralities, let’s look at the 2 parts of the movie where we most directly confront yusuf’s: his dream den and hiding the sedation from the team. i’m going with the assumption that any legitimate/legal research and application of dreamshare has been discontinued.

come yell at me for over oversimplifying, but that makes the question of the dream den seem p straight-forward. yusuf faced giving up dreamshare research (or came onto the scene after it was already illegal, which could make for some rly interesting stories abt how he would’ve found out abt it) and couldn’t, so he had to find a way to continue on his own. and since it would be in rly bad faith to assume he doesn’t have the full consent of all his test subjects, that’s js that. (i’m not going to argue abt the difference b/w ethics and morals, and i’m laughably unqualified to discuss the ethics of human experimentation anyway so moving on)

hiding the fact that the team was sedated was a major plot point and is discussed w according frequency, so i’m sure most ppl have their own opinions abt what this says abt the parties involved. i’ll readily admit that my view is heavily colored by the fact that i js plain like yusuf. he’s a likeable guy. (i’ll try not to go off on a tangent, but i know that my reasons for disliking cobb are a little unfair; it’s more about narrative structure than any of his personal failings. the fact is i have a weakness for hypercompetence, and cobb is presented as someone who used to be the best, but is no longer reliable. he shows flashes of his old brilliance running the mr. charles gambit successfully and improvising capitalizing on the appearance of fisher’s browning projection on l2, but he’s desperate enough to be untrustworthy and further, he’s untrustworthy in a way that is eminently predictable by the audience. we know from the get-go that his shade is gonna sabotage something, and it’s hard not to blame him for that. we also know from the get-go that he’s desperate enough to drag other ppl into a fool’s mission, and that he’s hiding something dangerous from arthur, who by all appearances should be the person cobb can trust, and the person to whom it’s most important to know that kind of shit. i’m not gonna pretend i anticipated that big twist in the parking garage on l1, but it makes a ton of sense in retrospect and all this makes it easy to see why cobb is so widely mistrusted/disliked by the fandom. and i went off on a tangent, whoops.)

so picking back up at yusuf is a likeable guy--he seems p friendly and easy-going and i thoroughly enjoyed every scene of him on l1. i’m gonna say a lot of his moral considerations come in the form of deciding what is or isn’t his responsibility. mbe he avoided or suitably resolved the thorny ethical question of human experimentation in the same way i kind of did: by saying that the participants agreed to it on their own and leaving it there. this kind of reasoning is how he would’ve let cobb take responsibility for sedating and then informing the team. it’s also probably how he decided to cue the kick early on l1 and make it everyone else’s problem. which i do think was the right decision! it would be absurd to suggest that this highly intelligent man’s patterns of reasoning are always questionable. but i do see a pattern.

as for the advice he’d give ari, i think a lot of this relates back to my mention in the earlier post of whether or not she could let an institution/legislation dictate her ethics to her. i’ve since decided that it’s simpler to assume the institutions are all outside the law, though, so i’m not going to think abt that anymore unless directly prompted. one thing we do know abt ari, though, in contrast to my suppositions abt yusuf, is that she has a v strong sense of responsibility. she took it upon herself to manage cobb, and she took it upon herself to save the job, fisher, saito, and cobb when it looked like everything had been ruined. thinking abt it now, this makes for further interesting contrast w arthur, whose sense of responsibility seems to revolve around personal loyalty, eames, whose sense of responsibility is acutely pragmatic, and saito, whose sense of responsibility is on the grand scale of stopping a monopoly (suitably ironic).

again, idk if i’ve rly made any kind of point, and now i want to go back and build elaborate hierarchies of skill in each job description (architect, extractor, etc) like i kind of did for chemists but, well. if u made it this far bless u, i hope u have a wonderful day. vote

*deep shuddering inhale* I have thought abt draco and harry being foils before I even reached double digits. they could have saved each other and had so much potential to even just be FRIENDS!! if j*r wasn't like that, then she could have actually made a meaningful impact on draco early on. abt how you don't have to be your parents! and how to heal!! anyway I love them any way shape or form. I love reading dark gritty fucked up stories about them just as much as I love reading domestic silly fluffy stuff for them. draco would NOT put up with harry's bullshit and harry would NOT go easy on draco either but they're ultimately just two lonely boys who grew up in fucked up households who have much more in common than they realize!!! LIKE!!

I've genuinely thought abt them since I was TEN when the first kingdom hearts game came out but it didn't solidify until KH2 came out when sora has to search for riku the entire game and when he finally does RIKU DOESNT EVEN LOOK LIKE HIMSELF BUT SORA STILL RECOGNIZES HIM ANYWAY AND HOLDS HIS HAND AND CRIES. THAT SHIT MADE ME GAY! I had never witnessed such tenderness and they are so inherently queer and subtle that it's one of the first stories I ever saw myself in. on top of that I also read that doujinshi that I consider Canon and it's so!! childhood best friends! with big complicated feelings of jealousy and betrayal and possessiveness when you start to grow apart from the person you care about the most!! and in game they're slowly... circling to become end game? the entire story revolves around them saving each other and RIKU LITERALLY CALLING SORA HIS MOST PRECIOUS PERSON? AHHHHHH

I will never forgive what the show did but the Fandom and the writing from that fandom is incredibly important to me. they're like my comfort pairing and I just love that Derek is sad and grumpy but it's because he's fucked up and needs to go to therapy and stiles is also kind of fucked up but happier and he's smart and beautiful and!!! they were obviously attracted to each other!! almost all of their stories involve CONSENT or Derek hale getting better slowly. they mean a lot to me bc my mom was dying while I clung to this fandom and wrote my grief fic and I always associate them with that time in my life. I could and did read like 30 stories abt Derek doing laundry and buying wooden spoons and trying to move on and be a healthier happier person.

rarely have rare pairs but this is one of them and!!! look. I didn't ship them until the last two arcs of the show revealed that instead of only knowing each other for a few years and being idiots they in fact knew each other for 100 years+ and DIED A LOT together and saved each other. BUT COULDN'T REMEMBER IT YET THEY STILL KIND OF... FALL IN LOVE AGAIN? they balance each other so much. magnus is magnus - brave and GOOD. taako is so closed off, careful abt trusting people so when he acted on gut instinct to LITERALLY THROW HIS SOUL OUT OF HIS BODY TO SAVE MAGNUS I was hooked. I know that taako ends up w kravitz but bc we didn't get to see Krav much I couldn't grow attached to him? I love the thought of first love and exploring that - how it never goes away, really but you can still love other people!! plus! I love writing them as lesbians! they're butch/femme to me!

6. ruth/debbie

UGH. UGH!!!!! they're so obsessed with each other and it's so filled with repression and anger and betrayal thst has nothing to do with Ruth fucking her husband and everything to do with the trust of their friendship. it's such a complicated weird fucked up intense 'friendship' that I love to see and like!! sometimes my friendships w women FELT like that. the times I have felt the most hurt is when I lose a friend bc a part of me is in love w them in some way!! Ruth and Debbie are just. in love. though. and Ruth is never gonna admit it and she's gonna... be in a comp het relationship even tho she thinks Debbie is smart and sexy and she idolizes her GOD.

YES MOST OF MY PAIRINGS ARE SAD WHAT OF IT? I read this book as a sophomore in hs and I simply could not stop thinking abt how gay and in love they were. FIRST OF ALL THE metaphors!!!!!! gene as winter and finny as summer!! and how codependent and weird they were even tho finny KNEW gene broke his leg. he didn't want to believe it bc he WAS IN LOVE WITH HIM. THEY WENT ON A DATE TO THE BEACH? THE PINK SHIRT? finny being the embodiment of childhood innocence and Gene literally breaking that? and killing it? once again I just love reading abt how complex jealousy is and where it comes from and also REPRESSION!!!

I wrote abt them for FOUR YEARS. they're childhood best friends who fall in love and marry and are in love no matter what universe and are so soft and tender and healing. forrest goes thru a lot of gender exploration and aiden is just the partner I want to be!! he's goofy and LOVES HER SO MUCH AND SUPPORTS HER SO MUCH GOD!!!!

they r a new one and yes once again childhood best friends but in a FUN NEW WAY that I want to explore. kenma is like disinterested in most things except gaming and whatever kuroo wants to do and has a hard time socializing bc he's SHY and is too observant! and kuroo is big and dumb and passionate but was also a stupid anxious child. I think they're those friends who are dating but don't even know they're dating or their relationship is so indescribable to themselves and others that it's hard to take any step forward or backward bc theyre SO codependent and yes. I want to explore that and read abt them more.

I just wanted a taste.

In Janis’ defense, it was really hot out. Like balls fucking hot outside. Like she had ditched the tights and was just in shorts. But that didn’t entirely excuse the way she practically fainted when Regina pressed her lips against Janis’s.

Wait, maybe she should back up a bit.

It was all Cady’s fault, because of course it was.

If it weren’t for Cady, she wouldn’t have been at Gretchen’s house in the middle of July, sitting on the side of the oversized pool with Regina. If it weren’t for Cady, Janis wouldn’t even have been talking to Regina (but that was a whole ‘nother story). And most importantly, if it weren’t for Cady, who forgot to pick up more ice cream because she was too busy making out with her boyfriend, they wouldn’t have run out of mint chip.

It was also sort of Gretchen’s fault, although not as much as it was Cady’s fault. Gretchen was the one who wanted them all to have ice cream cones for her instagram.

(“Well, Janis, I don’t know if you know this, but there’s a certain aesthetic to be maintained on Instagram.”

“Thank you, Gretchen, I had heard of that thing you’ve called aesthetic.”)

And so, thanks to Gretchen, Janis had found herself, watching behind overly large sunglasses thank god, as Regina licked around a chocolate ice cream cone, her pink tongue peeking out from even pinker lips.

It was enough to make a girl swoon, regardless of the heat.

Not that Janis would ever admit that to anyone, ever.

(She didn’t have to. They all knew anyway.)

“Oh fuck!”  Janis cursed as some of her mint chip dripped onto her hand, shirt and leg. “Jesus.” She stood up abruptly while Regina looked at her with amusement over her Prada sunglasses. “I’m just gonna go, ya know, clean up.”

“Make sure to dab, not scrub, dearest!” Damian called out from his spot lounging in the sun.  

“Good plan,” rasped Regina, her tone light and amused.

Janis cast a glance towards the rest of her friends who were busy with a game of chicken, Karen and Cady perched on Gretchen and Aaron’s shoulders respectively.

She slipped into Gretchen’s ridiculously large kitchen, all fancy marble and copper pots hanging from the ceiling. Wetting a paper towel with one hand, Janis licked up the last of her ice cream before it could drip onto her hand.

“Is there any more of that?”

Janis spun around, almost dropping the ice cream.

“Geez, you need like a bell or something.” Regina nodded towards her ice cream with a set of raised eyebrows. “Uh, no, uh, Cady and Aaron didn’t pick up any more, so it’s just whatever’s left from last week.”

That seemed to satisfy Regina who shuffled off to the freezer and rummaged around.

Janis focused back on the sink and trying to scrub the sticky green stuff off her leg. She and Regina had spent minimal, if any time, together since the Spring Fling. Regina had been nice? Sort of, kind of, Janis wasn’t really sure.

“Ugh, gross, she’s out of mint chip.”

“Oh, yeah, I think I got the last of it.” Janis glanced over at Regina, who had the same pout on that she had when they were 10 and couldn’t win the big bunny at the state fair. “Go complain to Cady, she’s the one who didn’t get any more ice cream.”

Regina let out a long exhale and returned to the freezer.

Janis stifled a smile and went back to scrubbing at her leg.

And then there was a wall of pink in front of her. Janis glanced up to find Regina standing in front of her, an odd look in her eyes with an emotion Janis couldn’t quite place. Janis slowly straightened up until her eyes were level with Regina’s nose.

Before Janis could say anything, Regina moved forward and pressed her lips to Janis’s.

Unlike the last time they had kissed at a sleepover in 8th grade when Regina had been nervous about her first slow dance and the fact she had never kissed a boy, this was more than just a quick press of the lips.

Regina cupped the back of Janis’s head, gently tugging on her hair. She slowly sucked on Janis’s bottom lip, drawing out a low moan. As Regina’s tongue slipped into her mouth, Janis was vaguely aware of the sound of the ice cream hitting the floor.  

Stars popped behind Janis’s eyes and then Regina moved away.

Janis blinked her eyes open, finding Regina only a few inches away.

“What the fuck, ‘Gina?” She choked out, stumbling backwards.

“What? I just wanted a taste,” said Regina with a smirk. She left with a kiss on the corner of Janis’s mouth and then sauntered back out to the pool.

“Holy fuck,” Janis let out a choked laugh, leaning against the counter. “What the fuck just happened?”

Janis twisted around to her other window, the one that looked out onto the big oak tree and the tree house her dad had never finished. And sure as fuck, there was Regina fucking George in all of her pink sweat suited glory.

And she was throwing fucking pebbles at Janis’s window.

Janis wrenched the window open and called out, “What in the everloving fuck are you doing, Regina?”

“I’m being romantic. Do you think that branch will still hold my weight?”

She motioned towards the branch that practically hit the side of the house. She and Regina had figured out at about age nine that they could come and go as they pleased by crawling out on the branch to the half finished tree house. Until, that is, they both fell out and broke their right wrists.

“Are you stupid?” Janis hissed out, her voice carrying on the summer air. “You haven’t done that in ages. Come through the front door like a normal person.”

“Aren’t your parents home?”

“Nah, my step-dad’s on a business trip and my mom’s got the night shift at the hospital. C’mon, I’ll let you in.” She stared out at Regina for a moment before turning away, a fondness seeping through her. She hesitated in front of a mirror and tucked her hair behind her ear before shaking her head. “Grow up, Sarkisian.”

She bounded down the stairs, the lightness she had been feeling since May carrying her.

And there, sure enough, on her front porch was Regina, looking unusually unsure of herself.

“Hey,” breathed out Janis.

“Hey.”

“Wanna come in?” Janis stepped aside to let Regina in. Regina stopped as soon as she got into the hallway, staring around the room. “So… should we talk about what happened earli-” Janis was cut off by Regina kissing her fiercely. After what felt like a wonderful eternity, Regina pulled back, letting Janis finish, “-er. Or, we can just do that.”

“Sorry, I don’t mean to keep jumping you, but once I started, I-”

“Couldn’t stop.” Janis smiled at Regina, tugging Regina back to her. As they kissed, Janis pushed Regina back until her back hit the wall. Regina let out a yelp and stiffened against Janis. “Oh fuck, ‘Gina, I’m sorry, shit, fuck, I’m an idiot.”

“You talk too much, Jan.” Regina flipped their position so Janis was the one pressed against the wall. Regina kissed her again as Janis let out a moan. Janis nipped at Regina’s lip as one of Regina’s hands slid until her sleep shirt. Janis moved down to Regina’s neck, pressing open mouthed kisses to Regina’s neck until she found a sensitive spot near her ear.

“Don’t suppose you wanna take this upstairs?” Janis ended the sentence on a high note as Regina’s other hand pinched her ass. “I’m taking that as a yes.”

Janis led Regina back up to her bedroom, glancing over her shoulder every few times as if to check that Regina was still there. She was still there with bruised lips and dark eyes fixed on Janis, or more specifically, Janis’s ass.

Once they reached Janis’s room, she was seized by nerves and doubt until Regina grabbed her hand.

“We don’t have to do this, Jan. Not if you aren’t sure.”

“You know, ‘Gina, I think I want a taste at the very least.”

I forgot season 7 was released only like two weeks ago and so much has happened? Literally feels like a month went by lmao.

I’ve aged 5 years. Here is a list of things I sorta remember but everything kind of blurs together?

•Cus like ;; both these people could’ve contributed to the fandom is some positive way but they argued online KNOWING the other person wouldnt change their perspective

•Suddenly people overly praise the season (like chill Sharon) or they’re pure assholes about it

•Some of the tweets were funny though don’t lie to yourself

•(tbh i try to stay neutral bc i see both sides and I’m sick of being sad)

•Neutral party simutaneously combusts

I have absolutely no idea what prompt to give you as a request but I really loved “just a fling” so maybe something with chris e again? Maybe Christmas or holiday related? Or on the flip side they get to know each other more (maybe didn’t originally like each other) become bffs then the relationship (which probably won’t be holiday related lol)? Really, just preferably something with a happy ending lol. Fluff, angst, smut, all or whatever really doesn’t matter to me. I’m just throwing things out there so I’m not completely useless lol.

After a couple of days, Y/N was discharged. Though she was still in quite a bit of discomfort she couldn’t wait to get home from the hospital over in a holiday season wasn’t exactly a calm and relaxing environment to recuperate in. She was home by the weekend and had a crowd of visitors come in as news had flown through the cast and crew like wildfire. She was touched that so many people seemed to care though she found herself getting exhausted at the simplest things and not quite ready to return to work as the Thanksgiving break ended.

Production rolled on into the end of November and Y/N found herself rattling around the house all day, though she finally managed to see some of the city which she had been waiting to do since she touched down for production. A welcome distraction came in the form of Chris who came straight from work to check on her late in the evenings.

The animosity between the two had disappeared totally. Since Chris had seen her so vulnerable they seemed to have come to another unspoken agreement and forgiven each other’s pettiness. He came a little after seven most nights and brought food so they could spend the night on the couch watching films. The rest of the visits, from other colleagues, died down after the first couple of days and so he was the only person she got to see by the end of the week. Y/N didn’t mind though. On the contrary, she was delighted with these interactions. In fact, the nights were a solace since she had been off work Y/N hadn’t considered what a loss it had been to have him so distant. Now he was so present she couldn’t believe he’d ever been away.

After a week off work, she was ready to return. Her doctor had given her the okay providing she didn’t drive for another week and any strenuous activity was avoided for a while. Y/N agreed to her terms as she was eager to get back to it and the production could return to its normal schedule. On the Sunday before she returned Chris came over, as he usually did, and brought Sebastian and Anthony with him. They ordered in and lounged around on the sofa enjoying the news about Y/N’s imminent return. Y/N had convinced the boys that the only thing that would make her feel better would be to binge-watch one of her favourite shows.

‘Wait so Philip did the dirty on the Queen?’ said Sebastian, looking at Y/N puzzled. ‘Well, it’s speculation but…’ ‘No way,’ he said wide-eyed. ‘How can you cheat on the Queen of England, I mean like she’s the queen,’ Anthony said. ‘I know but,’ Y/N shrugged as she munched on potato chips. ‘Brits are weird,’ Anthony chuckled earning a light-hearted glare from Y/N. ‘Woah, let’s not get into that debate Mack-Attack because you’re not gonna win,’ she said. ‘Oh, you think so?’ Chris said with a raised eyebrow. ‘Uh huh,’ she said with another glare now in his direction, ‘don’t be coming for my people.’

A laugh broke out amongst the group before it died down as they turned their attention back to the screen. The boys seemed engrossed, excited even, as Y/N announced they would be able to see the next season soon. Though after a while they started to fidget. Y/N noticed it in Chris the most who was stationed on the couch to her right and was now shuffling awkwardly in his seat. Her eyes drifted from him and back to the screen and stayed there until he was no longer unnoticeable. Chris turned to look at her and said, ‘could you perhaps turn the thermostat up? I’m a little cold here.’ His eyes were big and begging to which Y/N turned to look for other opinions. Sebastian and Anthony seemed to agree with Chris’ opinion. Y/N bit her lip and paused before admitting ‘Erm, the heating’s out, sorry.’

They looked at her puzzled and Chris sat so he was facing her and said, ‘what why?’ ‘I don’t know why it just sort of broke yesterday.’ ‘You didn’t have a look at it?’ Anthony said. ‘No?’ ‘Why didn’t you call the super or something?’ Chris said as if her actions were completely implausible. ‘I don’t know, I just kinda left it, it’s not a big deal.’ ‘You’re going without heat Y/N,’ Seb said concerned. ‘Guys it’s not a big deal. It’ll get sorted.’ ‘You see this is where you need to be a grown-up Y/N,’ Chris said with an exasperated sigh. ‘Alright dad,’ Y/N said with a roll of her eyes, ‘I’ll get a man in tomorrow.’ ‘That’s what I like to hear,’ Chris said with a grin. ‘You see that’s the difference between being 20 and being 40. Just get someone to come in, it’s no good being without heat,’ Antony chuckled as he jabbed Y/N in her side. ‘You know once some of my student friends and I didn’t use one of the rooms in our flatshare because there wasn’t a light.’ ‘What?’ Chris exclaimed. ‘Yeah, we didn’t get a new bulb for like 6 months so we just sort of stopped using that room.’ ‘That’s ludicrous,’ he said as the boys shook their heads with a laugh before Chris moved to shove Y/N’s legs off the table where they were resting as he whined, ‘and I’m still cold by the way.’ ‘There’s a blanket in my bedroom closet you big baby,’ she said resisting the urge to stick out her tongue. Chris rolled his eyes and got up dramatically as if the mere act of getting up was an achievement.

He moved through the room and into her bedroom, moving towards the closet in search of a blanket he was in desperate need of. He pulled back the door which revealed her neatly ordered cupboard to his eyes which scanned for any sign of warmth. Her clothes hung in a neat row with a shelf above them. Chris rummaged around it with a hand but felt nothing in the way of a blanket. He crouched to observe the bottom of the closet which was laden with boxes. Resting on top of one plastic box was a plush wool blanket neatly folded which he grabbed and pulled up. It unravelled to his dismay bringing with it a scrunched mess of black fabric. He moved the blanket out of the way and picked up the black fabric, shaking it out so he could fold it and put it back. It looked familiar and as he shook it out he found it to be a cop uniform. A very familiar cop uniform.

A pit grew in Chris’ stomach as his mind cast back to the last time he’d seen this uniform. But why was it here? In her closet, why would she keep it? He wasn’t sure he wanted to know the answer. As his name was called he stuffed the uniform shirt back into the closet and grabbed the blanket moving back into the living room at a pace. He was stony and silent as he sat down in his chair, the new information swirling around in his brain. ‘You okay?’ Y/N asked with a smile as he fell down into the seat with a thud. Chris turned his head and said ‘yeah’ though his smile was half-hearted. What had he missed?
