Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A weird sort of analysis but walk with me here. I feel like this episode was showing Myeongseok at his most stressed. Sort of the effects of being a high powered attorney with a winning streak. He spent the entire episode worried someone was gonna kill him. He probably worried himself sick in doing so. I feel in next episode he’s probably gonna take a vacation. I don’t (yet, I’d have to see if they’d bring it up in later episodes) see this as a sign he’s gonna die but more as a “this is the price of being a winning streak high profile attorney”. He probably thought about that and next episode wanted a break. But hey you never know EAW may surprise me. Someone literally died last episode so 🤷🏿‍♀️

Styling Suits for the 10 Kibbe types
a nice suit has no gender, and no single kibbe type, either! anyone can customize an androgynous suit to complement their type and their essence.
~~~
Romantics & Theatrical Romantics
Tumblr media
Lee Hi is a Romantic and Jessica of SNSD is a Theatrical Romantic. Both types need a suit that is predominantly made of a soft, flowy fabric that creates soft, draping lines. Jessica, as a TR, can handle a bit more sharpness and dramatic/yang qualities in a suit. The overall look is soft and 'yin' so the sharp shoulder pads don't overwhelm her silhouette.
Romantics might have a hard time with suits because many suits have strong, yang-dominant lines, but softening the shapes and 'feel' of a suit is very possible. Jessica adds a 'yin' spin to her suit with the dainty pendant she's wearing, plus the very soft look of the blouse.
~~~
Gamines
Tumblr media
Our Soft Gamine example is Nayeon of TWICE, and our Flamboyant Gamine, Jennie of Blackpink. Soft and Flamboyant gamines need line breaks. Due to appearing 'compact' they look best when this is emphasized with small, contrasting details that break up their vertical. Nayeon honours her Soft Gamine traits with a high neckline, a cropped shirt (creating the line break) and rolled up sleeves.
Jennie's outfit plays with contrast in a delightfully gamine-ish way. She has strong, straight shoulder pads, contrasted to a round neckline. Like Nayeon, her outfit is cropped (at the ankles) to break her vertical a bit more. Both ladies also have detailed patterns and/or accessories in their outfits.
~~~
Classics
Tumblr media
I've said this before, but the dividing line between Soft Classic (Mina of TWICE) and Dramatic Classic (Yeeun of CLC) is not that noticeable. Both ladies look amazing in a typical black and white suit, but their looks are modified to account for their yin vs yang undercurrent.
Mina's suit looks a bit 'softer', the fabric of her tie looks light and softened. Her hair is also slightly curled; if it was straight, like Yeeun's, the look might feel too harsh, but the soft shapes of her hair make this very harmonious.
Yeeun, aside from her hair, has an outfit that looks a bit 'harsher' (not in a bad way, of course). She has more straight yang lines, in the pinstripes of the suit and even in the straight-down earring she's wearing.
~~~
Naturals
Tumblr media
Olivia Hye of LOONA is a Soft Natural and Lisa of Blackpink is a Flamboyant Natural. Olivia's look suits the relaxed openness of natural recs perfectly. It's not too chunky or overwhelming for her frame, but it's not overly dainty, either. She's wearing loose-fitting pants and relaxed shirt sleeves, plus her tie is wider than the other ones we've seen (naturals have the frame to pull off a lot of in-your-face pieces!) The suit still honours her moderate vertical vs. Lisa's tall vertical, which we'll see.
Lisa looks powerful in this suit! As an FN, she can wear a lot of bold pieces (think of the styles that you see fashion models in) without looking like she's been overwhelmed. The black monochrome suit with very straight shapes emphasizes her continuous vertical. The chunky, glittery lapel is the sort of thing that FNs look fierce in!
~~~
Dramatics & Soft Dramatics
Tumblr media
Eunbin of CLC is wearing perhaps an ideal suit for SDs. SDs have straight, sharp 'yang' lines with yin curves as well, and her suit honours this with the sharply tailored lines, plus the soft bow as a strong yin focal point. Her hair and makeup is also following SD recommendations. (SDs are similar to FNs, in that they look great in bold styles, but there needs to be some softness)
Nana of After School looks devastating in one of the prime pure Dramatic recs: a suit! The natural stiff, sharp contours of a suit are perfect for Dramatics. The thin pinstripes and sleek hair further complement her elongated shape.
I am drunk on Young Woo's smiles from the last few minutes of Episode 16. That is all.
I love this girl 😭♥️
Thankyou to Park Eun Bin and the cast an crew to bringing this wonderful character to life!
I think Ep 16 tied up the lose threads fairly well. I also have a sense of fulfillment after watching the show.
I think the thing I loved at the end (and was most afraid would happen) was Tae Sumi not being villainised for carrying Young Woo to term at the request of her father and choosing to not be a mother to her- by being exposed for it. I'm glad that her candidacy ended because of a different reason. And that Young Woo and her brother met <3
I'm content for Tae Sumi to be in shades of grey.
But someone who has no shades??? Min Woo. I'm not buying his redemption atall especially because it came about due to lurve. Yeah those few moments of him accepting Young Woo eere nice but there's a huge chasm between this and the shit he pulled in the middle of the show which the writing failed to fill in my opinion. Even Min Woo self-reflecting that he didn't want to become Attorney Jang 2.0 would have been something.
Also, I still don't know what beef the Hanbada CEO has with Tae Sumi? ALSO, no Papa Woo x Lee Jun Ho interaction? 😭
I loved Hairy's Pub acquiring 3 more customers- or 5 if we count Jung Myeong Seokie and his ex(soon to be not ex?) wife. I just loved Attorney Jung showing up at the end. And tried doing Dong to the Geu to the Rami xD. Thankyou to Kang Ki Young for his amazing performance!
I went in EAW without even reading the synopsis and have come out knowing Woo Young Woo and whales and dolphins (and great layered storytelling in the first half) and I feel pretty satisfied with how S1 has wrapped up.
Lovely watching with all the folks over here and reading great analysis, especially from people on the spectrum. It was a learning experience for me!
Note: For this list, I decided not to add a symbol for shows that center queerness, because in a way all of these shows do that and at the same time almost none actually do. Queer characters and their love stories are featured in every show in this list, but most of them do not address any other queer aspects of their lives and only some address the fact that they are queer at all. This is not a critique of South Korean shows, but just an observation of their current media landscape and added as context, in case you are interested in watching.
Heya, me again! Thank you for getting into it with me. I finished Hot Stove League, what a fun and learning time. I honestly do not find baseball to be at all interesting but this one made me sit through it, and enjoy learning! I agree about Mr Bark and Mr Kwon here, I think they would have, at some point, loved to pulverize eachother from the face of the earth, but in the end came together for Dreams! And Park EunBin! I adore her so much, too much. AHH, what a delight, how amazing is she!
About JangHyun, I am looking forward to his growth. I think Part 1 was about GilChae's growth and part 2 will be his, I'm looking forward to seeing him unlock all of that trauma from his body and release it. Their parting was so horrible horrible horrible. I'm glad I wasn't online much after watching ep10, just so I could l figure out my own feelings about that ending without the many voices getting into my head.
Anyway, I think he will repent.
I'm so team GilHyun or JangChae that my assessment of both in the last EP is that they are both in the spectrum of the the five stages of grief, him: shock and her, maybe anger or somewhere further along the line. I hope I'm making sense. Because he returned to Joseon with the idea that he and GC will be talking about their future, he said they would when he 'proposed' to her before he left. And GC was probably overwhelmed when she saw him alive after thinking that he was dead for so long.(PS: what a horrific way to realise that you love someone). Maybe after a long time reflecting, he may, may, understand that he was asking far too much(the fact that YeonJun said things that make sense before Janghyun was able to see it says a lot.)
I'm very interested in how GC feels about RyangEum.
Extremely proud of GilChae( very sad that we have to keep emphasising this). I'm looking forward to their conversations in the future. To GilHyun or JangChae.🥂
Dearest Anon, I still don’t know how baseball is played but I’m glad that wasn’t necessary to enjoy the show.
I loved Park Eun-bin so much - she’s so smart and gutsy and hotheaded and full of love for her team. I deeply enjoyed her protecting Baek Seung-soo (and on occasion his one cheap suit) by throwing a shot glass at a player built like a tank. I enjoyed Oh Jung-se’s character very much as well - there’s a wonderful scene where he’s with his cousin who drops his key and waits for Oh Jung-se to pick it up - which of course Oh Jung-se does since this cousin will be his boss someday, and Baek Seung-soo observes this moment from his car. Lovely character work in that single thirty second scene.
Thank you for those amazing observations about Gil-chae and Jang Hyeon - it makes so much sense! I think they are deeply misaligned and I agree with you that they are also in two different stages of grief. I think Gil-chae tries to meet him in the middle, but Jang Hyeon didn’t wish to move at all (perhaps partly because he was in shock, as you pointed out). I hope like you do that he reflects on and regrets how he treated her. If there is one very sore point I have with the show, it is that they made Yeon-jun of all people (!!!) say the right thing to Jang-hyeon.
I think you were completely right to stay mostly offline for the post episode 10 discussions. I read very little and backed out. I think it’s just part of a larger cultural conversation that we tend to give men far more grace and leeway than we offer women. I find it ironic here because the characters literally live in an era where men had a lot of leeway to begin with and women had very little (and the show takes pains to address this too!), so it’s a real choice to place even higher expectations and tighter leeway on the women and doing the opposite for men. But this has been going on longer than the internet has been alive, I guess.
Anon, thank you so much for coming by and making these very cool and wise observations. As you progress in your Namgoong Min deep dive, please always know you can come hang out here, link arms virtually and tell me (and us!) all the Namgoong Min feelings. Here’s a hug if you’ll have one! 🫂
Wtf do you mean Youngwoo broke up with Junho??? WTF DO YOU MEAN YOUNGWOO BROKE UP WITH JUNHO?!?! Why you put attorney Jung outta commission?!?!
Youngwoo literally skipping down the block, becoming a full time employee, seeing all her favourite whale friends in the sky, conquering the rotating doors and then meeting with Junho?!??? What a goddamn banger ending.
I too am feeling a sense of fulfilment Youngwoo!!
What a great ending. We were on rocky terrain for a while and they reached for the tried and true drama tropes. And you kept being left uncomfortable because all the people Hanbada was representing weren’t people you could easily sympathise with. But it made for some compelling storytelling, if the fandom riots were any indication at the absolute fear people had about how EAW was gonna end. Haven’t watched 2521 but I hear y’all are scarred. I had no such trauma so I was more judging it for the fact that it did try to cram a lot into the final hour. And maybe they had the inside track on getting S2, but I believe the first season, first book, first book should always be a contained story in its own right
I think this was. Yes the Minwoo storyline is not complete in terms of him making up for his past sins and whether or not Atty Jung returns to Hanbada is up in the air. But I think that EAW S1 had a solid through line and ended quite well and completed the story of Youngwoo’s first 6 months as an attorney with her becoming a full time employee.
I look forward to s2. If Kang Tae Oh isn’t there bc of his military deployment, then yknow what they can wait. Bc otherwise there’s no point.
Park Eunbin is a stellar actress. Great ensemble cast. Kang Kiyoung is best boy. I hope to see Geurami find the person of her dreams and move on from Minwoo. Still kinda hoping Suyeon does the same but idk if that’s the vibe atm.
But anyway. V good Kdrama. Some flaws to be sure and content matter is complex and steeped in real world politics and intricacies but delivered very well I think?
OK maybe this is my optimism screaming at me but I honestly feel like Junho and youngwoo are not over especially with the karaoke scene, the lyrics!!! Sorry but I don’t feel like their completely over maybe this is called optimism because it’s my first kdrama but there’s many symbolism other then this. The dolphin popping up when they walk away, the karaoke song, the ex wife and the way Jung talked about her. Based on junho and maybe outside forces they are gonna have a conversation. They better cause my sanity depends on it. Hopefully the writer and park eunbin comments on the ending doesn’t make this show my 13th reason.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo- Episode 8
Finally caught upto EAW and I'm LOVING the character dynamics. The fact that Young Woo has such people around- minus Min Woo- who respect her yet don't coddle or pity her....ah my heart 😭😭
Episode 8 does feel like the halfway point and my only complaint is that it wrapped up the halfway threads so well that I'm not as on edge about the next epusode as I normally am?
The whole backstory with Young Woo's dad and her birth mom Tae Sumi has a lot of shades of grey; no one is to be entirely blamed except the classist society.
I spent the first episodes resenting Tae Sumi's smug face everytime she was onscreen. But with the past reveal, I don't think she should've been persuaded to carry out a pregnancy she didn't want? I disliked Young Woo's dad for that, since it was quite early into their dating period.
However, he spent the next years being a great dad that I can see why the thought of having his own kid moved him to the degree that he begged Tae Sumi to carry the pregnancy to term. The fact that he loved his unborn child and KEPT loving Young Woo and still does is a sore reminder for us during these times.
Ah Young Woo ya! Park Eunbin is wonderful. Young Woo's way of getting to the heart of things whether in a trial or with Jun Hu, in her clear direct manner is amazing. I adore her relationship with Geu Rami and Soo Yeon. AND JUNG MYEONG SEOK!!!!!
The only one whose smug face I feel comfortable hating right now is Kwon Min Woo. I thought perhaps he was Tae Sumi's son but I doubt that now with how often he's been in her presence and his non reaction. I highly doubt that Jun Ho is going to turn out to be her son either cause I don't see this going down a TSHLYE incest route 😬 Maybe he's going to turn out to be as yet unintroduced character.
