Q&A with Jacqui Culler

✨A short interview with my RevPit 2024 winner!

Hey Story Crafters,

As summer starts winding down (I know the last official day of summer is in September, but years of public school has trained me to think of Labor Day as the end of summer), I want to take the opportunity to reflect a little more on one of the bigger writing-editing events I participated in this year: RevPit 2024.

I honestly hadn’t heard of RevPit before a couple of years ago, when a board member reached out to ask if I’d like to participate as a RevPit editor. I said yes, completed the sample materials and sent them to the RevPit board, they extended an invitation for me to be a RevPit editor, and…life happened, preventing me from participating in RevPit that year. Thankfully, the board said I could still participate the following year, and I was able to serve as a first-time RevPit editor this year.

And I’m so glad I did! I’m happy I was able to interact with my fellow RevPit editors and the RevPit community through the 10Queries events on Reddit, to share the love of writing, reading, and a little of my editing expertise. Though it isn’t possible to offer a full developmental edit for free more than once a year, I’m happy I was able to do so through an event like RevPit. And I’m really glad I found a RevPit winner who was a good fit for my communication style (email only!), in addition to being a talented writer open to receiving feedback.

Which brings us to the main event of this post…

Jacqui (@CullerPictures) wears quite a few hats: she’s a YA fantasy author, works in the film industry, and also freelances as a graphic designer. She agreed to answer some questions about why she decided to enter RevPit.

1. Before deciding to enter RevPit, what was your editing process?

Before entering RevPit, my editing process had a few steps after finishing a first draft. I’d go back through the manuscript and do my own version of a developmental edit, checking where the major plot points happened and writing breakdowns for every chapter. That would help me figure out if certain scenes were truly needed, if some could be combined, and if others needed to be beefed up.

Then I’d go through and do a line edit to clean up the writing and try to get the word count down. After that, I’d read the whole thing out loud to listen to the flow of wording and dialogue and make edits while doing so.

Finally, I’d try to give the whole thing a rest for a few weeks and then give it another read-through with fresher eyes to hopefully catch any typos and story slipups.

2. Why did you choose to enter RevPit?

I had actually entered RevPit twice before with a different manuscript, and this was my third time entering. I’ve followed Revise & Resub for a few years and I love the community they’ve created online.

When I entered this year, I did so not expecting much, but I figured why not try? I was very pleasantly surprised when I got the email that said I was a winner!

3. What qualities were you looking for in your RevPit editor?

I read the profiles for all the editors that fit my genre and looked for the ones that I thought I would enjoy working with. I wanted an editor who specialized in fantasy and would tell me what was working as much as what wasn’t, as well as someone who would be encouraging along the way. Leah was all those things and more, and I’m so lucky she chose me as her winner!

4. Did you have expectations going into RevPit? If so, what were they, and how were they met?

After finding out I won, I hoped my manuscript would come out the other end being the strongest version of this story it could be. I suspected that meant ripping it apart and piecing it back together, but I was open to major changes and just excited to have Leah’s eyes on it.

Luckily, there wasn’t that much ripping involved! There were still changes I had to make, but I felt like each one worked toward that goal of telling the best story I could.

5. What did you learn about yourself as a writer from RevPit?

I learned to have a little more confidence in myself as a writer! I was prepared to face some hard truths about my writing and storytelling when I got my edit letter, and I remember the biggest thing I was surprised about was how much I’d done right!

That edit letter and this whole RevPit experience have given me a huge boost of confidence, not only in my writing abilities but also in my ability to be able to talk about my writing and what I’m working on, which is something I’ve been very shy about in the past.

6. How has your querying journey been so far?

From the RevPit Showcase, I got interest from three agents, and two of the three requested to see more of my manuscript. One was a full request and the other was a partial, and I’m currently waiting to hear back from them.

I think a huge reason why I got interest was due to how much Leah helped with my opening pages and my query letter, making sure the stakes were clear and that it hinted at the major theme of the story. I’m still sending out queries to more agents, just to cast the net a bit wider, but fingers crossed I’ll get that yes soon!

Additionally, Jacqui was kind enough to share her thoughts about working with me!

1. Did you have any concerns about working with me on your project? If so, did your concerns turn out to be true? If not, what happened instead?

When I found out I was going to get to work with Leah through Revise & Resub’s annual RevPit contest, I did zoomies around my apartment, I was so excited to work with her! It was obvious from our first communication that Leah is not only kind and professional, but 100% knows what she’s doing.

Every single word of her feedback shows how thoughtful, intelligent, and insightful she is, and that she truly wants to make your work shine. Whenever I received feedback from her, I couldn’t wait to read it because I knew her insight would help me see my story in a whole new light. My experience working with her was even better than I had hoped for, and it makes me feel incredibly lucky and grateful that she chose me as her RevPit winner.

2. What did you enjoy most about working with me? Were you pleasantly surprised at any point of the process?

I enjoyed every aspect of working with Leah, and I can’t recommend her enough. When I read through her comments on my manuscript, it was almost like I was sitting right there with her as she read it. The feedback was so insightful, encouraging (not to mention fun to read!), and each one lit up my brain with ideas of what I could do to strengthen my story.

She showed me how a reader might interpret those aspects of a story that are so easy to overlook as the person who wrote it and made enormously helpful suggestions on how to address them. From minor notes like a pesky door that I kept forgetting only opens one way, to bigger picture suggestions like making a character’s motivations much clearer, Leah got me examining every scene, every dialogue exchange, every room layout—all aspects of my manuscript—to ensure they were all working together like I intended.

3. If you recommended my editing services to a close friend, how would you explain the reasons they should hire me?

Leah can not only pinpoint what part of your manuscript or query is or isn’t working, but she can tell you exactly why. Before I started working with her, I had revised my manuscript so many times, I’d hit a wall and was fresh out of ideas on how to make it better.

After Leah sent my editorial letter, it was almost like it made my story new for me again. Every suggestion she made on my manuscript and query letter helped me either build on what was working or put me on the path to making it better. The process of working with Leah breathed new life into my story—and me as a writer.

4. What are 3 words you would use to describe your experience working with me, or my editing style?

Encouraging – Leah told me what was working and what I did well as much as what could be improved on, which gave me a huge boost of confidence. As a writer, you want to tell the best story you can and you want to feel confident that you can do that. With Leah’s encouragement I received both, and I can’t thank her enough.

Thorough – Reading through my edit letter and the Developmental Editing Tracking Sheet Leah created, I could tell she combed through every inch of my manuscript to the point that it felt like she knew the story just as well as I did—and sometimes even better! She posed questions about my setting, character motivations, and story timeline that hadn’t even occurred to me that I needed to answer.

Invaluable – Having Leah’s eyes on my manuscript and her editing talent in my corner has been invaluable. During the time I’ve worked with her, I feel like my storytelling has become stronger, and the way I think about how to construct a scene, build a setting, and develop character relationships has strengthened my writing.  

5. Have you ever hired a freelance editor before? If you have, how has your experience working with me been different?

While I haven’t worked with an editor before, I can’t imagine a better experience than working with Leah. She went above and beyond to make my manuscript shine, and because of her, it’s now better than I could have possibly made it on my own.

Garden Log #4/17/2024 - Evening

I'm only a little annoyed that my browser crashed while I was writing this text post (I hadn't typed much yet), so I will try to write it out again. :P

For starters: drip irrigation kits! I understand why someone recommended just getting the cheapest one as a starter because it's really just a way to learn how to hook everything up and what pieces you actually need for your uses. I'm a little more than halfway finished with a basic setup and everything is working like it's supposed to.

As I was setting the tubing up, I did sneak some peeks at some of the things I've planted and I noticed at least one onion is shooting, the single garlic I moved the dirt around to check has rooted (I didn't know that's what garlic did and was checking for rot/dryness), the potatoes have all developed roots, and the two different dahlia roots I planted are also starting to grow new shoots even though I definitely thought I'd killed them by not watering enough on those random ass summer heat days. The cherry tomatoes are still alive, and the sunflowers are doing really great, as well.

The only thing (in the garden itself) not showing any progress are the marigold seeds, but a store-bought packet I found says the germination time is 10-14 days, and I only planted them a few days ago.

I think some of the catnip and rosemary I planted it starting to sprout, and my cabbage sprouts are looking really nice. When I get the drip irrigation set up I will try to transplant the cabbage/broccoli and plant lettuce, spinach, radish, beets, beans, and a bunch of miscellaneous herbs and flowers that are supposed to be good companions for more of the garden. I'm really excited to plant the white yarrow sprouts because even the seeds had an amazing smell, and hopefully my chamomile seeds will germinate soon, too.

I'm going to be a lot more careful with how I store my seeds this year so I won't have to spend so much on restocking again OTL

Oh! I forgot to mention because I'd already typed it out in my other text post attempt that I finally planted the seeds that needed planted! Finally!!! I do also plan to replant some herbs that are having trouble germinating from last year's seeds, but I won't need to go through as much trouble with the seed starting mix.

I also found a packet of Parisian Market carrots that I'm a little excited for because they basically look like orange radishes and should be easy to grow anywhere there's open space in the garden and I've never grown carrots before.

I'll need to make sure I get the electric fence put up tomorrow because the cats are trying to use my garden as a litter box and I'm also worried opossums or raccoons will bite or pull out my irrigation tubing or dig out the bulbs and tubers

The game-plan for tomorrow should be: 1) finish setting up irrigation, 2) finish setting up the electric fence, 3) plant whatever I remember to plant where spacing allows, 4) fix ripped greenhouse screen windows

Newsies as things my cast did while in (and out of) character

first of all: some casting gags

our spot was this tiny buff blonde girl who was like a Total class clown

our race, in contrast, was soft spoken, freaking gigantuan (like 6’ something) and did drag in his free time. he did a fully choreographed routine to Miss Baltimore Crabs at karaoke night. it was fabulous.

our jack was straight and a total bro— but he had a really great voice and up until tech week i thought his accent was real (i still haven’t heard his real voice).

our davey is my best friend. he’s the memeiest mofo out there, but he drinks his Respect Women Juice. freaking chugs it. he’s the only cishet guy i trust. he’s also fairly new to musical theatre (this was his first time at the camp) but he’s definitely committed and has been taking voice and tap lessons.

our les was 13 years old. he looks like an 8 year old. my actual 9-yr-old brother was heavier than him. he was also the funniest dude i’ve ever met, and he introduced said 9-yr-old to the concept of lesbians.

our pulitzer was like 15 and an Absolute Fool.

we had a couple doubled roles— jojo doubled as Bill and Seitz doubled as Darcy. also i (romeo) doubled as Bunsen (and a nun asdfghjkl), and buttons doubled as the mayor

we had a couple girlsies with speaking roles, including Specs, Elmer, Tommy Boy, Mush, and ofc Spot

Specs was the dance captain, and Finch was also SUPER talented (he did a lot of cool flips and stuff. at one point Jack boosted him for a flip a la Newsies Live. it was awesome.)

we had a pair of twins in the cast who played Wiesel, Roosevelt, and Jacobi. they were best friends with the guy who played Snyder, and none of them got their lines memorized until opening night. they were all kind of really annoying— “Snyder” was suspended for a bomb threat in 8th grade, nearly killed the cast of our school musical because he was messing with the rigging, and (according to his sibling) plays torture simulators for fun. yeah. seems pretty on brand

OKAY now onto Actual Shenanigans

That time...

pulitzer took the Stuf from a bunch of Mega Stuf oreos, put it in between the cookie parts of one oreo, and ate it while bunsen filmed

during the first staging of seize the day, when davey & jack were instructed to put their arms around each other’s shoulders during “behold the brave battalion”

davey did what he was supposed to

jack did not, and instead grabbed davey’s ass

during one of the last singing rehearsals we were doing Something to Believe In in front of the full cast for the first time and Katherine was busy staging Watch What Happens

so Finch (male) sang her part

and afterwards Jack chased him around the room trying to kiss him

someone gave me a mocha chip smoothie while i was in my bun costume, which led to a horde of nuns taking crazy selfies with the Jamba Juice cup

that time i was in my nun costume, walking past a janitor to get to the dressing room and he said “Afternoon, sister”

Except, instead, you let him escape, and everything turns out fine.

🌷ggukkienote: I am so hooked on this (because I am a sucker for Mafia AUs too). This is such a great story and the OC is really different from the usual OCs. Very interesting.

Chapter 3 - Addicted to you.  

A/N: It felt so weird writing/editing this chapter in the middle of summer, but that’s how their timeline worked out! I can’t remember the last time I released a H&L chapter or wrote one to be fair, I think after this I have 2 more in drafts. Better get back to it! I hope you like it 😘

A couple days later.

"So what are you going to get Harry for Christmas?" Nikki asks her as they had taken a break from shopping to have some lunch. "I have no idea what to get him!" she sighs. "I'm sure he'll be happy with you in some sexy lingerie," Nikki winks at her Laila lets out a loud laugh making people turn to look at her. "Or you can get him a Santa costume?" she laughs.

"What are you getting Stu?" Laila changes the subject. "He wants a new aftershave, I can't remember what he normally wears. What does Harry wear?" Laila has a think "Erm...a few different ones really Paco Rabanne One Million, Davidoff cool water, Boss Bottle that one what's his face is in the advert....the guy that plays Thor. Is one he smelt recently and liked but he didn't get it because they sold out and only had the sample bottle."

"You can get him that! I might have a sniff to see if it's something Stu would wear too!"

After lunch, they are walking through the shopping centre, Nikki ended up getting Stu some aftershave. Laila was still unsure what to get Harry, so Nikki drags her into Ann Summers. "What about these??" Nikki holds up some fluffy handcuff, Laila snorts. "We already have some, but without the fluff!" Nikki puts down the cuffs "What about cock ring? Closest Harry will get to sticking a ring on it!"

"We have that too," Laila blushes. "Crotch less knickers?" Laila nods signalling she has those. "Weighted love ball?" she asks and Laila again nods. "Feather tickler?" nod, "Blind fold? Riding crop?" Laila again nods, "Jeez, it would be easier to ask what you haven't got!" the pair laugh, "What? It has been eight years remember!" Laila winks at her.

"What about anal beads or ball gag?" Laila pulls a disgusted face "Finally! What about nipple clamps?" Laila laughs, "Only if they're being used on him!" she laughs. "God! Just think 6 months ago you were a born again virgin...now look at you! Getting more action than all of us put together!" Nikki giggles "Just over 7 months actually!" Laila corrects her.

Laila's phone Pings.

"Nikki! Look what Harry has done to Mabel!" she hands her the phone. "Awwww! Laila how adorable do she look!" the pair coo over the photo. "Has she met her new dog walker yet?" Nikki asks as she hands back the phone "She's met her, she's actually taking her out today." she smiles.

They ended up leaving the shop with some Christmas theme lingerie.

Later.

Laila arrives home all the lights are out "Harry?" Laila calls out. "I'm in the living room!" he calls back, she hangs up her coat and makes her way across the hall. When she opens the living room door the room is lit with tea and fairy lights, there are blankets and cushions on the floor in front of the coffee table. On the coffee table there is a chocolate fondue with fruit and marshmallows next to it "Aww Bear! What's all this?" she wanders over to him on the floor. "Where's Mabel?" she looks round the room as she sits next to him.

"She's gone to bed, Nessa took her for a 2 mile walk today!" he cups her face pulling her in for a soft kiss. "Aww, are they getting on OK?" he smiles, "Yeah, I've booked her in for Monday to Friday this week coming about lunchtime, so you'll met her this week."

"Right, enough about this dog walker. Are you going to let me feed you?" she winks, he leans forward grabbing a strawberry and hands it to her. She dips it into the chocolate and guilds it towards his lips, he's just about to take a bite when she redirects it to her mouth and takes a bite. He laughs and reaches over and pulls her lips to his. His tongue swirls with hers tasting the chocolate covered strawberry, he pulls away "That was amazing!" he grins at her.

She grabs another strawberry covers it in chocolate and traces it against his pulse line. Her tongue follows the same path, he groans and his breathing hitches as she pulls away she places the strawberry against his lips, he takes a bite. His lips brush over her finger tips making her every nerve ending stand on end. He knows the affect he has on her "How was that?" 

"Tasty!" he grins and winks at her "Your turn." he picks up a marshmallow covers it in chocolate holds it out for her to bite into it. "Hmmm..!" she smiles at him "Did you get all your shopping done?"

"I need to order a couple of bits online, but after that..I'm done."

"Christmas day, what are we doing?" he asks.

She sighs, "I don't know how we are going to split between them all!" she leans against him and his arm comes around her. "I have an idea....as it's our first Christmas together, what if we did Christmas day just me, you and Mabel? In bed in our PJ's? I'll cook us Christmas dinner. Then Boxing day we do a buffet for both families?" she sits up to look at him "So, a lazy Christmas day? In bed?"

"Yeah...PJ's, snuggles in bed and a Harry Taylor roast. What more could a girl ask for?!" he winks waiting for her answer. "I love it!" his face lights up "Really?!" he questions her. "Yeah, Christmas day in bed with my hunky boyfriend, but I have one alteration....no pajamas!" He raises a brow to her, "Noted!" he jokes. "Instead Christmas jumpers!!!" this wasn't the answer he was expecting.

She giggles "Your face! But I want matching Christmas pajamas!" He chuckles "OK, but no photos my brothers will rip into me!" she sighs "Oh! Come on, one photo? Just to make me happy?" she pouts. "Fine, if it makes you happy." she claps getting her own way, "I think you owe it to Mabel after today!"

He chuckles "She looked cute!" "She did! Oh are you working Saturday?" she asks. "I don't think so?" he questions. "Every Christmas we do a friends Christmas party, kinda like a blow out before the family stuff. Nikki has planned it for Friday night and she has found somewhere that is having a 90's to 2020's night"

"Sounds good, who's going?" he asks. "Remy, Alec, Nikki, Stu, Alene, Daniel and now us!" she smiles. "I'm guessing we get completely smashed then?" she laughs.

Friday evening.

They arrive at the club Nikki found, Laila and Harry are the last to arrive.

Laila notices Stu and Nikki at the bar, she sneaks up behind her Stu spy's her, but Laila puts her index finger to her lips signalling him not to say anything. As she reaches Nikki, she wraps her arms around waist, making Nikki whip round with a face like thunder until she realises it was her friend "Laila, I was just about to...whatever. Glad you guys are here." she shouts over the music.

"Sorry, Mabel's walker got back late. Where are the others?" Laila calls back, Nikki points over to a table where the rest of the group are sat. Harry leans in, "Shall we get a drink first?" Laila nods "What you guys having?" Stu asks. "I know Laila's drink, Harry what ya having?" Nikki asks.

After they make their way over to the others "Hey!!" Laila call out as she takes a seat next to Alec, who hugs her and Harry. They are sat for a few minutes when Kelly Rowland - Commander begins to play Nikki jumps up, grabbing Laila's hand dragging her to the dance floor.

Nikki starts to sing along.

"From here on out

I'll be your commander (I'll be your commander)

No fear no doubt

I'll provide the answer

Right now I command you to dance"

She points to Laila, who starts to sing along with her. The pair are dancing on the edge of the dance floor in view of the table, laughing, their bodies swaying to the music the pair attract a couple of strangers, who slowly move closer to them waiting to make their move to become their unwanted dance partners.

Completely oblivious to the unwanted strangers, the song switches to Rihanna - Only Girl they continue to dance. Suddenly both girls feel someone behind them as they turn they saw Stu and Harry, Laila looks up at him confused "I thought you don't dance?" she laughs. He wraps his hands round her, swaying her as he leans in, "I don't, but those blokes behind me were inches away from trying to dance with you two."

She looks behind him "Oh, you didn't want me dancing with a stranger?" she laughs, he shook his head and they continued dancing away.

The next song was Magic - Rude as it starts up Laila starts singing it to Harry when she gets to the chorus he joins in.....

"Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?

Say yes, say yes, 'cause I need to know

You say I'll never get your blessing till the day I die

'Tough luck, my friend, but the answer is no!'

Why you gotta be so Rude?

Both grinning and smiling, he cups her face pulling her in for a kiss.

A little later back at the table "Laila, Boxing day....is it OK to bring Melissa?" Alene asks, Laila looks over to Rem. "Is Rem OK with that?" she looks to Alene who nods "If it's OK with Rem it's OK with me." when she looks up Rem mouths "Thank you." to her.

Daniel comes over from the bar with a tray of drinks "Sex on the beach anyone?" he passes them around the group. "Damn Daniel at least buy a girl a drink first!" Alene teases him "Sorry Len, but you aren't my type!" he winks at her, the group laugh.

A little later Perfect Gentleman - Wyclef Jean starts playing a tipsy Harry pulls Laila away from the bar and onto the dance floor. He spins her before pulling her close to him swaying them together. "Hey, you are a liar!! You can dance!" Laila giggles as she wraps her arms around his neck.

"My moo....ves only get bet...ter after I've add....a few." his words are slurred, his hips move with hers. He spins her round again, her body collides with his "I think you need to get drunk at every party or night out if it improves your dance moves!" he smirks before claiming her lips. As they sway with their lips locked, Laila can feel him begin to stiffen against her hips "Hmmm....someone seems to be enjoy themselves a little to much!" She winks.

He looks round checking no one is near, his lips brush against her ear "Can we head home? I got some other kinda moves I want to show you!" she giggles and bites her lip, "Let's go!" they say their goodbyes and head for the tube.

10 Minutes later.

Their underground train arrives empty, he sits and pulls her onto his lap. He captures her lips, the kiss becomes heated, Harry pulls off his coat and places it on her lap. His hand creeps under his coat snaking into her jeans "Bear, not here!" she whispers, he smirks against her lips continuing his trail. He lets out a soft growl. He reaches her hidden jewel, her head rolls back as his lip pepper down her neck.

She bites back a moan as he works between her slick slits.

Through the speaker they hear the next station is their stop, they both groan with disappointment. "Come on, we can continue this at home!" she gets up as the train pulls into their station.

2 Weeks later.

It's the day before Christmas Eve, Laila has just finished her last day until the new year, she wanders into the kitchen, "Oh, Harry! You're home early!" she was sure he mentioned he was training Stu tonight.

He's leaning against the kitchen counter with a whiskey in his hand, he looks over to her "I canceled Stu's PT session....Laila, there's something I need to tell you..."

He looks as if what he's about to tell her is tearing him up inside, her minds goes into overdrive....Was history repeating itself?

"Bear?" she looks at him concerned, he takes a deep breath "When I came back today to take Mabel for a walk at lunch....I bumped into Nessa." she laughs, "What is she annoyed we didn't get her to take Mabel out today?" he silently chuckles, but it quickly fades. "She was walking another client's dog, she asked if she could join Mabel as I was taking her over to the fields. We were just sat on a bench talking...she asked me about work and us. Then this afternoon she turned up at my work for a PT session, I didn't even know she booked. I was giving her a tour of the gym and she tried to kiss me..."

Laila's cheeks burn, but soon drain cold "What?!" was all she could conjure up from her lips. "Laila, I promise you as soon as she leaned in I stepped back. I was just as confused as you are, I asked her to leave after that." she can see he's just as shocked as she is "Laila? Please say something!" he softly pleads with her.

She sighs, making her way over to him cupping his face "Looks like we need to find a new dog walker." she laughs, he rolls his eyes at her. "Hey, It's not the first and probably won't be the last time a client tries to make a move on you....I remember a client making some more steamier moves on you about 7 months ago," she grins at him. He laughs, "Those were wanted moves!" he reminds her. "More than wanted...just look at what happened that night...but I'm glad you told me about Nessa." she pushes up on her tiptoes to kiss his nose.

"I've never given another woman a tour of the changing rooms since." he laughs before continuing "That is how and why we work because we are honest with one another!" he kisses her nose. "OK, can I be really honest..Bear?" he nods, "You stink!! Did you not shower before coming home?" Laila baits him. "Oh, I do? Do I?" he raises a brow to her.

With that he throws her over his shoulder "Harry?! Put me down!" she screams between her laughter. "Sorry, my love that's a no!"  his hand strikes her arse cheek as he begins to climb the stairs with her over his shoulder. "Harry!!"

Later.

Cuddled up on the sofa watching a film "Bear?" he hums in response. "Can I be the one to sack Nessa?" she giggle, he starts searching her hair, "Harry, what are you doing?" she asks. "Looking for your devil horns," he chuckles, "But if it makes you happy...Yes, you can sack her.... to be fair, it means I don't have to deal with her," he starts to stroke her hair back down "Now how to do it? Mwahahaha!!" she fakes an evil laugh, "You really are the devil!" he smiles at her "Oh, you've seen nothing yet, Bear!" she winks.

i made a tag game again.  i’m bored, procrastinating, and certain we all need some more positivity right now. hell yeah.

dean winchester / supernatural - not only because i love pie, women, classic rock, and old muscle cars, but because i also have great a great emotional capacity but no skill at articulating it and will probably spend 11 years harboring feelings for a friend that i’ll never admit to having.

nick miller / new girl - because he is attractive, stupid, funny, and great boyfriend material. i am also attractive, stupid, funny, and great boyfriend material.

RENT. i saw it once almost ten years ago and remember virtually nothing about it except at one point an actress had the entire crowd screaming “MOO!” over and over again and it felt like a dream. i saw that play while meeting with a pen pal i had my freshman year of high school.

4.) What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?

i don’t have anything that sticks out to me, but i become a complete mess when people compliment my singing.

5.) How many times have you been in love?

two, i think. maybe once. although, i’ve told a few too many people i loved them, even though i didn’t actually feel it with most. the real question is, how many people have been in love with me? that would be zero.

6.) Embarrassing story or fact about yourself that makes you laugh now?

as a kid, i was obsessed with harriet the spy. to the point that i made my own spy kit (which consisted on a costume purse from my grandma’s dress up bin and a singular compact mirror that i would use to peek around corners). my big brother caught me a few times and told me to stop being dumb.

7.) Favorite Disney/Pixar movie?

the little mermaid, hands down, no questions asked. as a toddler, i would demand that my parents play, rewind the tape, and play it again over and over all day long. i still watch it for comfort sometimes.

i always want to say halloween, but the past few years, halloween hasn’t been very good to me. but christmas always makes my heart swell up with happiness.

hand holding. really, any physical touch will ground me when i’m feeling stressed/anxious, but hand holding is my favorite.

i’ve dropped out of school twice lmao, but if i had the discipline to go back and actually finish a degree, i think i’d like to become a high school engligh teacher.

it’s not that i necessarily hate a lot of my family, i just don’t like a lot of them. there’s not a single one that i can pick out and say, yeah, that one is the best one.

The Rise Of Skywalker Review [SPOILERICIOUS]

I’m going to post all the SPOILER stuff way below in section 3, so as not to ruin anything for anybody who hasn’t seen the movie yet.

You’ll get plenty of warnings.

In my old age I’m starting to divide creative works into three groups:  Good, bad, and not-so-good.

A good creative work is any where the strengths overwhelmingly outweigh the weaknesses; a bad one is the obverse.

A not-so-good work is one where the strengths and weaknesses balance each other out.

It’s the kind of a work that will doubtless please those audience members who really enjoy the strengths in it, and equally irritate those annoyed by the weaknesses.

In my estimation, a not-so-good work is one done with straight forward intent and as often as not, a fair degree of technical and aesthetic competency, but fails to jell as a cohesive whole.  

No one need feel ashamed for enjoying a not-so-good work, and no one involved in the making of a not-so-good work should feel bad about their contribution (unless, of course, their contribution turns out to be one of the weaknesses that should have been avoided).

Theodore Sturgeon famously observed “90% of everything is crap.”

I think that’s a little harsh.

I agree with him that only 10% of anything is good, but think only 40% falls into the crap bin.

Most stuff falls in the 50% I call not-so-good.

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker is in that 50%.

The good stuff is really good.

Elsewhere I’ve posted my enthusiasm for Star Wars Episode VII:  The Force Awakens and Star Wars Episode VIII:  The Last Jedi hinge in no small part on just how emo Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) could get, and holy cow, does he ever deliver in The Rise Of Skywalker.

Easily my favorite parts of the picture.

Doesn’t really mesh with anything else in the movie but, hey, ya can’t have everything, right?  (I’ll discuss his performance in a little more detail in section =3=.)

Other performances range from adequate to doing-the-best-they-can-with-the-material to okay-smartass-you-try-recreating-a-dead-actress-via-CGI.

The dialog in The Rise Of Skywalker is the worst of any film in the series, with the possible exception Star Wars Episode III:  The Revenge Of The Sith, which I haven’t seen and have no intention of seeing (but more on that below…).

It’s not an attempt to depict characters talking, it’s a series of shouted declarative sentences.

Elsewhere I’ve referred to The Rise Of Skywalker as the best Jason Of Star Command episode ever made.

For those who don’t get the reference, Jason Of Star Command was a low budget albeit imaginative Saturday morning kid-vid Star Wars rip off by Filmation Studios.

To make sure the youngest kids in the audience understood what was going on, they tended to hammer home plot points repeatedly.

  DRAGOS Jason!  In just sixteen hours my space fleet will destroy Star Command!

  STAR COMMAND Jason!  Dragos is going to destroy us with his space fleet in just sixteen hours!

  JASON Don’t worry, Star Command!  I’ll stop Dragos from destroying you with his space fleet in sixteen hours.

  NARRATOR (i.e., Norm Prescott) Jason has only sixteen hours to stop Dragos from destroying Star Command with his space fleet!

  There is far too much of that in The Rise Of Skywalker.

Ten minutes into the movie, and there was already far too much of that…

The opening credit crawl reveals an off camera plot development that literally deserved an entire film of its own to fully explore.

There is no sustained coherent plot to The Rise Of Skywalker:  

Well, we gotta do this,

now we gotta do that,

first we gotta find this thing,

then we gotta find that thing,

now I’m feeling blue,

now I’m gonna get encouraged,

etc., etc., and of course, etc.

Everything feel frenetic, not fast paced.

There are far too many scenes that exist just to sell action figures and toy vehicles.

There was a desire to tie off loose ends and say good-bye to favorite characters and that was a mistake.

It undercuts the urgency of the story (or rather, the desired urgency; the fact the film is called The Rise Of Skywalker means everybody in the freakin’ audience ALREADY KNOWS HOW THE DAMN THING IS GONNA END!

(This is not a problem unique to Star Wars.  Gene Siskell famously upbraided Roger Ebert for spoiling the ending to the third Star Trek movie, to which Ebert retorted, “Oh, come on!  They’re going to call a forty million dollar movie The Search For Spock and not find him?!?!?”)

There is one nice little breather scene (“little” only in screen time; visually it’s pretty big and impressive):  The Festival of the Ancestors on the desert world Pasaana that gives a nice touch of exotic space opera flavor to the proceedings.

All of the Star Wars movies offer really great art direction and visual design, and The Rise Of Skywalker certainly delivers in that category.

Which makes the occasional mediocre special effects shots all the more obvious.

The Rise Of Skywalker has a few painfully obvious matte shots, a few shots obviously composed in post-production, and a few shots where the audience becomes aware the actors are performing in front of a greenscreen. 

You can get away with mediocre visuals so long as there is consistency in their mediocrity.  

If everything else consistently looks great, a so-so shot spoils the illusion; if everything consistently looks so-so, it’s simply part of the work’s look.

Indeed, you’re better off with consistently mediocre work highlighted by a few great shots than consistently great stuff undercut by a few mediocre ones.

Best thing about the movie is the complete lack of Jar Jar Binks.

Before diving deeper in The Rise Of Skywalker, let’s look at the series as a whole (just the numbered theatrical episodes, not standalone films, TV series, video games, comics, novels, etc.).

I’ve said the original Star Wars was the movie an entire generation had been waiting all their lives to see.

George Lucas wanted to do Flash Gordon but when Universal turned him down, created his own space opera.

Lucas, it needs be noted, is not a good writer.

Whatever visual talents he has, they don’t extend to telling a good story.

One can easily find early drafts of Star Wars online, and while they all share certain elements, they’re all pretty bad.

The development of Star Wars the movie grew organically with storyboard and production art, characters and incidents changing and evolving along the way.

It’s long been rumored that a more skilled writer than Lucas came in to do the final draft; one thing’s for sure, the shooting script is head and shoulders above the earlier drafts.

Star Wars the original Han-shoots-first-dammit theatrical release is very much a product of the 1970s.

20th Century Fox thought they had a good enough kiddee matinee movie for summer release; they expected their big sci-fi blockbuster of the year to be Damnation Alley.

Instead, they hit a nerve and found themselves with a blockbuster on their hands.

Lucas did show one great example of foresight:  He trademarked all the names / characters / vehicles and held the licenses on them, not 20th Century Fox.

This gave him the war chest he needed to build the Lucasfilm empire.

And let’s give Lucas and his crew their due:  They added immeasurably to the technical art of film making, as well as making several entertaining films.

What Lucas did not fully envision was how to mold his Star Wars material into a coherent and thematically cohesive saga.

He started out with grandiose plans -- four trilogies with a standalone film connecting each for a total of 15 movies -- but that gradually got whittled down to 12, then 9.

After Star Wars Episode VI:  The Return Of The Jedi, Lucas put the Star Wars movie series on hold, waiting for film making technology to develop to the point where he could tell the stories the way he wanted to tell them.

Okay, fair enough.

But the problem is that while the film making technology improved, the technology of the Star Wars universe didn’t.

As I said, the original Star Wars is very much a 70s movie in taste / tone / style / sensibility.

While the designs look sufficiently sci-fi, they reflect robots and spacecraft designs of the 1970s -- in fact, even earlier in many cases.

That fit in with Lucas’ “used universe” look and the tag line “A long ago in a galaxy far, far away...”

But compare the original Star Wars with Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Kubrick spent a lot of time researching where technology was heading.

Long before visual displays and vector graphics became commonplace in real world aircraft, he showed them being used in the future.

The first example of what we refer to today as a computer tablet appeared in 2001 as a throwaway background detail.

Kubrick’s next film was A Clockwork Orange and he successfully predicted punk culture a decade ahead of reality (his only mistake being the assumption white, not black, would be the base color).

Star Wars Eps I - III take place a generation before the original Star Wars movie.

Star Wars Eps VII - IX take place a generation after.

Name a two generation span since the start of the industrial age that is not marked by radical technological change that produces an ensuing change in the social order.

Now I grant you, the Star Wars universe isn’t trying to tell that kind of story, but the story it is telling is static.

Characters in The Rise Of Skywalker talk about cloning as if it were A Really Big Deal.

Cloning today is cutting edge bio-tech, to be sure, but it’s already common place.

It’s as if the Star Wars characters were getting worked up over steam engines.

One can intercut scenes from the movies and, unless one is a familiar with each movie, it’s impossible to tell one film from another.

Lucas’ financial success enabled him to issue edicts re Star Wars (and other Lucasfilm projects) that undercut the strengths of his projects.

Lucas is a technological guru and a savvy businessman, but he really struggles to tell a story.

Frankly, I think he would have been a better film maker if he’d spent a decade or so making American Graffiti scale movies, not space operas and epic fantasies and adventure movies.

His decision to make the original Star Wars the fourth episode in his saga and going back to start his story with his villain was fatally flawed.

I grant following the Skywalker saga from Anakin to Luke to Rey could work if it started with Anakin.

But what he did was the equivalent of the James Bond movies jumping back in time to follow the pre-Bond career of Ernst Stavo Blofeld.

(And the Bond movies, at least up until the Daniel Craig era, are all standalone films insofar as one does not have to see any of the previous films to understand and enjoy the one being watched, not does the sequence they’re viewed in matter.  And the Craig films were conceived from the beginning as having a coherent overall arc, so in that case they are the exception to the rule.)

The joyous whiz-bang space opera of the original Star Wars got bogged down in a lot of meaningless politics and talks of trade treaties, none of which explained why anyone would want to conquer the universe in order to rule it as a decrepit, diseased dictator in a dark hole.

Look at Hitler and Stalin and Castro and Mao and the Kim family in North Korea.

These guys enjoyed themselves (well, Hitler did until things went south for him).  They loved the attention and went around preening themselves in public.

The off screen Empire (and implied Emperor) of the original Star Wars served that film well:  It was a story about a tactical conflict, not a treatise on the philosophy of governance.

Lucas’ universe does not make sense even in its own context.

And because of that, it becomes harder and harder to fully engage with it.

A sci-fi movie doesn’t have to explain everything, but it has to at least imply there is an underlying order that links up.

Lucas began subverting his own universe almost immediately.

The Force was originally presented as a spiritual discipline that any sufficiently dedicated intelligent being could gain access to.  (Robots seem to be specifically excluded from The Force, implying it needs a biological connection.  But that would seem to exclude intelligences that may not be organic in the commonly accepted sense of the word, which means such beings cannot appear in the Star Wars universe, which means…well, I digress…)

That was a big hunk of the original Star Wars’ appeal, the thought that literally anybody could become a Jedi if they so desired.

It speaks to a religious bent in audiences from many different cultures around the world, and it offers up an egalitarian hope that allows everyone access to the Star Wars fantasy (“fantasy” in this context meaning the shared ideal).

But already in Star Wars Episode V:  The Empire Strikes Back Lucas began betraying his original concept, sowing the seeds for self-serving deception and innate superiority as endemic in The Force.

By the time he got around to Star Wars Episode I:  The Phantom Menace, Lucas abandoned the hope established in the original Star Wars movie.

Now one has to be a special somebody, not just dedicated.

Mind you, that sort of story has its adherents, too.

Way back in the 1940s sci-fi fans were saying “Fans are slans” in order to claim superiority over “mundanes”.  Today many Harry Potter fans like to think of themselves as inherently superior to “Muggles”. 

It’s a very appealing idea, so appealing that the United States of America is based on it, the assumption being that white people are endowed with more blessings -- and therefore more rights -- than non-white people (add force multipliers such as “rich” / “male” / “Christian” / “straight” and you get to lord it over everybody).

Lucas with his stupid midichlorians robbed audiences of their healthy egalitarian fantasy and replaced it with a far more toxic elitism.

It appeals to the narcissistic stain in the human soul, and encourages dominance and bullying and cruelty and harm as a result.

It’s an elitism that requires a technologically and sociologically stagnant society, one where clones and robots and slaves can all co-exist and nobody points out they are all essentially the same thing.

A progressive society -- and here I use “progressive” strictly in a scientific and technological sense (though as stated above, advances in scientific fields invariably lead to changes elsewhere) -- does not let such conditions exist unchanged for generations.

As technology changes and improves, the culture/s around it change (and hopefully improve, too).

As I mentioned above, I’ve never seen Star Wars Episode III:  Revenge Of The Sith.

My reason for not seeing it?  Star Wars Episode II:  Attack Of The Clones.

Little Anakin Skywalker and his mom are slaves in The Phantom Menace.

He saves the Jedis and Princess Padame’s collective asses in that movie.

Okay, you’d think at the end of the movie that Padame would hand Qui-gon her ATM card and say, “Here, go back to Tatooine and bail the kid’s mom out.  He did a solid for us, it’s the least we can do for him.”

No, they leave her there because there is no desire to change the underlying social order of their universe.

There can be no changes in Lucas’ bleak, barren moral universe.

There can be no help, no hope, no improvement.

When an edict is issue -- be it Jedi council or Emperor (or president of Lucasfilm) -- it is to be obeyed without question or pause.

Daring to say one can change their status -- change their destiny -- results in tragedy (and ironically, proof that is their destiny).

It’s dismaying enough that a large number of people enjoy cosplaying Star Wars villains, especially storm troopers, as that seems to indicate they’re missing the whole point of why the rebels were striving against the Empire in the first place.

Originally that could be written off as (at best) just enjoying the cool costumes and props or (at worst) finding an excuse for bad behavior (i.e., “I vuz only followink orders”).

But Lucas’ tacitly endorsing a sense of innate superiority pretty much destroys everything about The Force that the original Star Wars audience found enlightening and ennobling.

The Star Wars universe has become at its core a very ugly thing, and The Rise Of Skywalker doesn’t really clean it up.

Seriously, SPOILERS follow.

Holy crap, The Rise Of Skywalker is a damn mess.

Nice eye candy, but a mess.

It pretty much undoes everything good in the previous two episodes.

I’m glad it’s the “official” end of the original saga because now I never need to see another Star Wars movie ever again.

(Oh, I’ll keep my DVD of the original Star Wars and if I find Solo in a bargain bin somewhere I might pick that up, but as far as the rest of Star Wars goes, I am D.O.N.E.)

The series stopped making sense long ago, so I’m really in no mood to analyze why nothing links up or really works.

It’s full of absurd, stupid ideas, such as space barbarians galloping across the deck of a star destroyed on their space horsies.

The whole back and forth between among Palpatine / Kylo / Rey goes on for two long.  If hating somebody is bad because it sucks you over to the Dark Side, then why doesn’t somebody start building Terminators that can track down beings with midichlorians and kill them?  (They’ve got the technology to detect midichlorians, that’s canon.)

It’s not anywhere near a good movie.  It’s not as bad as George Lucas’ Star Wars Episodes I - III, but it’s clearly the worst of the last trilogy.

The scene where Rey gets off camera encouragement from all the dead Jedi?  It seemed awfully familiar to me, as if the writers consciously or unconsciously remembered the John Wilkes Booth / Lee Harvey Oswald scene in Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins where all the presidential assassins and would-be assassins past and future encourage him to plug Kennedy.

Not what I want in a Star Wars movie.

I think we may be seeing the end of Star Wars.  It’s been crammed down our throats for too long.  I’m aware of The Mandalorian series and how insanely popular it is, but y’know, sooner or later every pop culture craze dies out.

Star Wars has nowhere to go.  Star Trek is hemmed in, too, but nowhere nearly as bad as Star Wars.

We’re about to enter a generational shift in America, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a badly dated 1970s sci-fi concept fails to make the cut.

It ends on a frustrating note, taking much too long to come to a close, far too much self-congratulatory bullshit, and the deliberate planting of clues for a future set of sequels should the Mouse start jonesin’ for that sweet, sweet Star Wars franchise money fix.

It’s a really bad script, and dragging Carrie Fisher’s digitally reanimated corpse into it and then killing her off by suicide is a damned stupid / offensive idea.

Mark Hamill’s ghost walking out of the flames of Jedi hell (thank you for that analogy, David Brin)?  Wow, who didn’t see that one marching down the avenue?

Harrison Ford coming back as a memory / hallucination to tell Kylo to do the right thing?  Skrue dat noiz.

(Though I have to say Kylo Ren is the best thing about the movie and his character turn parallels both Luke’s and Vader’s in The Return Of The Jedi only his is much more believable and poignant so dammit, Disney, you could have done a much better job with this movie than you did.)

The plot and pacing is straight out of a video game.  First do this, then do that, now ya gotta do another thing -- feh!

And unless I misheard the dialog, this whole film supposedly takes place over a span of sixteen hours!!! 

They visit a half dozen worlds, crash and repair spaceships, go undercover, get captured and escape, fight duels to the deal -- all in sixteen hours?!?!?

Yeesh.

And I’ll say this, the last line is wrong wrong WRONG.

If the Star Wars saga has taught us anything, it’s that Force users are a threat to everything.

They should be eliminated for the good of the universe.

Rey shouldn’t have buried the Skywalker lightsabers.

She should have destroyed them -- and the one she made, and any others she found lying around.

And when she’s asked at the very end what her name is, the answer should have been:  “Rey…just Rey.”

I know I put The Rise Of Skywalker in the not-so-good bin, but truth be told, that’s the nostalgia talking; it’s only a eyelash away from being bad.

The whole epic saga is a failure as far as I’m concerned.  One and done is the way to go; the moment it started making money as a toy franchise it went south.

A/N: I wrote this a while ago but then decided to rewrite it since I hopefully have improved at writing just saying in case this appears to be familiar. 

Characters: Erik x reader, mostly just mentions of Charles, Raven and Alex.

Warnings: Loss of a child, a little angst  

The first time we met was in a bar.

He and the professor had tried to recruit Logan and he was being a total git, per usual. I stepped forward to ask what they wanted and I knew then and there that I hated him. He was cocky and arrogant and I found myself comparing him to Macbeth once I got to know him a little more. There was a short moment of silence before I felt a digging in my mind and then the shorter one addressed me.

"So your mutation."

"What do you want."

There were a full 5 minutes of intense staring while he spoke to me inside my head and the only thing telling about our conversation was the change of expression on my face. I joined the fight that day.

Rather than mingling with who I would later dub, the group of wayward mutants I chose to sit outside already missing the comfort of my overprotective, and one might argue grumpy friend. We had parted ways me knowing that wouldn't be the last time I saw him. He sure loved to cause trouble here and there. I watched the professor convince Erik, to stay and once he left Erik stood around a little before going inside. It was then that he noticed me by the door.

"I didn't catch your name"

"That's because I didn't tell you. It's Y/N"

"Well Y/N it's nice to meet you."

"I'm sure it is."

Since we were similar in that we were pretty advanced in our mutations we spent a lot more time together. Just training turned into eating and eventually just being in each other's constant company. We kept it mostly professional. Me harbouring a small crush which I wasn't too sure he returned. Until one night when I woke up with tangled limbs and messy hair. One might say when I tell this story That he was nothing more than a blip in my very long life but a feeling is a feeling and everything felt good when I was with him, even when it was bad.

Almost too soon for us to address that the beach came along and we made our decisions Raven choosing Erik while he waited for my choice.

"I can't choose you, Erik, you know that."

"No, I don't you can do what you want. You can't pretend what happened didn't."

"How can I choose you after this, what the hell is wrong with you. Don't you understand what you've done? No. I'm done with your shit."

The next time we met was years later. Alex Summers and I had become extremely close but he then got drafted. It was bad after that, the one person I trusted to lose hope did and the school was shut down. The day was normal until Logan walked through the door. I wasn't in the room and wasn't able to clarify that yes I do know the mutant whose acting like they know you and it was the loud crashes and then a long string of silence that made me cautiously enter the room.

"Y/N aren't you a sight for sore eyes."

"Logan what the fuck are you doing here," I said a smile reaching my face.

"He's from the future apparently, he wants us to break Erik out of prison," Charles interjected.

"I want to ask about the future thing but I don't really want to know." I went along with the whole process and let him lead us to who I later would find out is Erik's son. He had just explained the whole I'm from the future thing which to me sounded like complete bullshit but this was someone I trusted with my life.

"Damn it's been a while," Logan said after the car ride got a little too quiet for liking.

"I'm dead aren't I," I asked Logan.

"What gave it away."

"You're a sight for sore eyes. I wouldn't willingly stay away from you for that long and with the way you described our future I'm not sure how long I would last."

"You lasted a long while it's just you refused to run and hide. You died protecting the people you loved including myself. He wanted to die with you, by the way, it's just the professor wouldn't let him."

"So he's still kicking then I'm sure."

"Yeah, he told me to tell you that he loves you. "

"I'm sure he did."

We broke Erik out which we were able to do a lot easier than expected I wasn't needed much, so I had no reason to interact with Erik until we were left on the plane.

"You look well." He said I'm assuming to lessen the tension.

"You killed the president."

"I did not."

"The bullet curved," Charles said obviously not taking a hint and joining the conversation.

"I tried to save him, he was one of us."

"The President, a mutant you've got to be mad."

We kept all necessary contact scarce after that to a complete minimum. Until the fight came along. Erik ran after that with little less than a goodbye and at that moment I hoped I wouldn't see him again. I can assure you I did.

Hank, Charles and I had rebuilt the school by this time. Alex had returned and we had built our lives together. I never needed more when I was with him. I felt complete and that was what I wanted to keep. Last time I had heard from Erik was through Raven who had said that he was now married with a young child. I suppose it was natural that he also moved on but it still hurt in a way, it felt as if our story was unfinished.

The day I saw him again had to be the single worst day of my life. It started with the appearance of Erik. It was in that moment that I knew something was going to go wrong.

"Y/N You weren't supposed to be here."

"What is that suppose to mean what the fuck are you doing Erik."

"How's your son."

"I don't see how that's of relevance Erik, how's your daughter."

"Dead, along with my wife."

"That makes the fucking both of us. " I was stern and very ready to hit him by that point.

The minute after however had to really rip me from my insides. Charles was taken and Alex tried to stop them. It was too late and the next minute I was sobbing and screaming in front of the ruins of my school with Erik's son holding me while I was sick.

I felt my world being pulled out from under me, everything I had created for myself. The one person who was my constant was ripped away from me in seconds without me able to do anything. The worst part was that I was alone to grieve. Charles was gone, Raven and I weren't close and I was expected to fight before I had time to process and function. I never have felt so empty and so defeated.

The fight happened not soon after. Peter has taken us up to Erik but I found it hard to look at him I was numb and angry and for once in some sense, I understood Erik's actions. Built on anger, hatred and loss of hope. His glance kept flickering to me while Raven was speaking, to the point where she gave up and just looked at me and waited. I finally looked him in the eye, tears gathering in my eyes, I wiped them away furiously.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to. I'm sorry." He said softly.

"I want to say it's okay but it's not. I lost everything with him, Erik." Quiet sobs broke my speech causing him to lower his hands slightly and his eyes to soften.

"I understand. Just please let me help you."

"How the hell am I suppose to trust you, Erik, you keep running I can't take someone leaving me again. Stay just please stay Erik."

He fought with us and we won with the help of the new group of wayward mutants. I distanced myself from Erik until I tried to speak to the professor and saw him there.

"Erik your leaving," I said both disappointed and strangely upset.

"Yes but hear me out please."

"No, are you being serious. You promised."

"I want you to come with me." He said cutting me off. "I know that I can't stay here, this isn't my home and I see the way that you look at this place, you can't stay here it hurts. Just trust me and for once I swear it I will not disappoint you. Come with me."

It took minute and tears to fill my eyes before I nodded furiously and jumped into his arms. It felt right just like me leaving felt right and when we found a cottage with a farm in the countryside that felt right too. It took over a year for me to kiss Erik and then it took 2 months after that for us to become a couple. 2 years after that we said vows that lasted about 10 minutes and 6 years after that I would hold my 3rd child. A boy, Alexander Logan Lehnsherr.

A wild tag game appears! Woo! I’ve been tagged in this a few times in the recent-ish past, so I figured I’d make a lil compilation answer post. This tag is very cool and I’m so glad I found a lil time to get it done :D

I included one each for Heart of Lead and Belladonnas, to compare usage/style/etc. All under the cut, for the sake of length!

Dance

Heart of Lead (draft 2- i.e., the version before this Spring/Summer’s rewrite, which I’m currently planning): A soft wind blew through the park, making the willows dance above us.

Belladonnas (uses “dance” MUCH more than Heart of Lead, interestingly):  Patrons crowded around tables and twirled on a hardwood dance floor before a swaying jazz quartet.

Water

Heart of Lead (Wren talks about Luanne’s eyes a lot lmao):  Her eyes were wide, innocent, and startlingly calm. They were a perfect rainy-day gray, I noticed, almost colorless, like lake water under a sky of clouds.

Belladonnas (this one’s from my favorite paragraph!):  “It’s true; I have no plans to nurture your rivalry bushes and water your beds of greed.”

Wood

Heart of Lead (ehehehe no context for you):  The tearing of wood and metal, as the door was ripped from its hinges and hurled against the stairs.

Belladonnas (I! Like! This! One! Too!!!):  The place was an enchantment of dark wood and high-gloss.

ever since the cancellation was announced, i’ve been trying to figure out how to put into words all that once upon a time has meant to me. at first i was like, ‘i’m gonna keep a draft and write down all the thoughts i have about ouat until the finale & give my whole sordid emotional tale!’ but that......was a bit much for me also trying to finish up the semester at the same time. then i thought i’d go for a seven-day countdown - also not the smartest idea to try and pull off during finals week. so here i am on the day of instead.

so what up once upon a time. how you been doin’.

rhetorical question, i know how you’ve been - you and me, we’ve been together since day one. actually a little bit before, because you first drew my interest from a magazine spread the summer of 2011. you fell right in line with my being raised on my mom’s love for the 10th kingdom, and right after i’d grown out of reading the sisters grimm as a kid. i watched the pilot and fell in love by the end of the first scene, and realized i’d found something to stick with me when the clock struck 8:16. after an unsuccessful first confusion with tumblr, you’re what drew me to the platform after ‘skin deep’ aired and i needed to scream. the day that filming vids from the season 1 finale were shared and we all realized that joe & farming meant a lot more than they did 30 seconds ago was nuts, and i was a mess when emma kissed henry’s forehead and broke the curse.

an even bigger mess when the tv cut out right in the middle of rumple revealing why he’d thrown that vial down the well and i had to go digging for the full end of season 1, but y’know that’s not sentimental or shit, that was just annoying and that’s not what we’re here for today.

then s2 came around and we exploded exponentially. between ‘ask if we have avocado’ and the main cast growing and you getting on netflix, we went from a little dinghy to a whole fleet. you could mention once upon a time and people would actually know what you were talking about, and it was easy to make friends between everyone groaning about how many random breaks the show got that year. it was still marked by the same disagreements that were started in s1, but joining the ranks were the starts of ship wars - tho looking back at it now, i don’t actually remember being as much of an issue then. they were there, yea, but not an overwhelming issue; i actually don’t remember them becoming publicly ugly until marketing surged up for s3 and press articles started pitting them against one another. but i also view that time through rose-tinted glasses, so who knows.

besides that, tho, i remember s3 fondly. it started with what i believe would be found in photoshop’s toilet, and ‘going home’ was beautiful and the culmination of 2 and a half years of love. the nonsense died down when ‘quiet minds’ aired and there was actually a mutual agreement of respect towards everyone who mourned neal’s death. i’m gonna admit, you kind of lost your luster there for me for a while after that though. baelfire had been so intricately involved with the heart of the showing, and his death just felt like that heart was being ripped away.

but s4 was still wacky and enjoyable, and the finale made me so excited to see henry back in his spot of ‘only believer in a cursed land’ but with a twist. actually, deviating from that - i loved how every almost finale was about henry in some way. whether it was breaking the curse, him being pan’s real goal, operation mongoose, him acting out his mourning of his father and getting the world to believe in magic, or him getting the curse to break one last time and heading off to an epilogue that was, finally, his own story -- henry was the even greater heart of you and that was never forgotten. he got the most continuity in his development, and a lot of us got to grow up along with him in storybrooke, maine. i was 14 when i started this show, barely starting my freshman year of high school. 7 years later, and i’m going to be starting my senior year of college. henry was bleeding heart, stubborn optimism that just refused to die out.

it wasn’t any mystery about why he ended up my favorite character.

so where was i - oh yea, finales and going into s5. which... existed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ hey bleeding heart and stubborn optimism may not have only been henry’s character but the personification of my relationship with you, but even the stubbornest glasses half-filled have to admit when you get an off year. the ball got dropped on dark swan, making an arc that could’ve been all about reconciling the grief emma felt for her childhood with her still trying to fully open her heart to her family, but y’know. the hets sell. i actually liked the underworld arc, but i was so burnt out from the first half that i couldn’t really get invested as i could have with a solid first half of the season. s6 was a much better improvement on stable quality, and the final battle is still up there battling for one of my favorite episodes. and then... end of book one. onto the epilogue.

i’ve always meant it when i’ve said that i feel sorry for everyone who skipped out on this last season. season 7 has been amazing. with the majority of the fanbase gone taking the bad apples with them, i haven’t felt this much peace in the community since season 1. everyone left were the people who had fallen in love with the heart of the show. the new characters were amazing - alice jones has made me cry, i still am so thankful to this last year for finally giving me a version of hook to genuinely love, because i hate missing out on a good thing but hook prime was just not a character i could get on board with. and everyone i’ve seen who started watching the season later has fallen in love with it too. it’s a good thing, it’s a love letter to the heart of the show, and it shows how much the people behind it have grown since s1. there were six years of mistakes. like, no doubt about it, there were just straight up mistakes. but they grew from them and kept working it until they knew how to make good on them. and i’m grateful for that, to see them learn and grow right along their audience, their characters, and this incredible piece of spiteful optimism that is once upon a time.

so. that’s how it happened. 7 years of once upon a time, of growing up from an awkward teenager to a child who can drink trying her best. there’s a lot more, like the friendships i’ve made or the relationships i fell in love with, but that’s the core of it. i am very grateful to have loved a show with so much heart in it, that was never afraid to be embarrassingly emotional or completely heartfelt about the concept of hope. there have been a lot of things that weren’t entirely genuine, but i think that the bookends of season 1 to season 7 were. this was the little show that could. and i’m very glad that i could have even some small part of it.

Gluttony Back in the days when I was a young, careless glutton, I ate cows, pigs, fish, turkeys, and chickens with barely a thought to those billions of sentient creatures in brutal captivity.  I consumed the milk of cows, even as their young were denied the nourishment, and were being slaughtered for veal.  I deprived chickens of their progeny by devouring their eggs, while mixing their genetic material with flesh ripped from pigs, over a piping hot burner.  At a gut level, I knew I was being a thoughtless, brutal asshole.  But what’s a poor human to do, when all the best information is telling us that we NEED the protein.  We NEED the dead flesh of the designated sacrificial beings.  After all, who in his right mind would consider giving up In and Out Hamburgers? Selfishness may be the only reason most humans ever exhibit decent behavior.  In my case, I only gave up animal protein in favor of a plant-based diet because I became convinced that the gluttonous consumption of  dead animals is the major cause of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, Parkinson’s, and many cancers.  I did it for my own good.  I did it out of selfishness.  The decision had little to do with empathy or kindness.  Like all humans, I’m still an asshole, but now I’m an asshole who can look into a cow’s big brown eyes without guilt.  I can forget the sins of my past, and the cows will never be the wiser. Gluttony is second only to lust on Ye Shitlist o’ The Lord, and looking around, it appears that humans have not only overpopulated the earth with their lustful antics, they’ve filled it to overflowing with gluttonous, flabby, morbidly obese, thoughtless, brutal assholes.  Gotta blame much of this mess on God, Himself for telling His clueless minions that they should “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”  One of the best examples of The Lord’s dark sense of humor; with His blessings, the planet is overpopulated to bursting by gluttonous, fat-assed killers. Fifty years ago, I had a choice:  1. Stay in college and keep the 2S Deferment, which would keep me out of The Vietnam Fiasco for a while.  2. Drop out of college and head for safety in Canada.  3. Drop out of college and take my chances with the draft board.  or 4. Drop out of college and join the U.S. Navy, in order to avoid being drafted into the U.S. Army, and possibly becoming fertilizer for rice paddies in Vietnam.  I hated college, so choice #1 was out.  Number 4 was a possibility for a while, but the more I learned about military matters, the more I became convinced that I just wouldn’t fit into any of their uniforms.  So when it came down to a choice between possible prison time, and maybe never again seeing friends and family, I chose to stand my ground on U.S. soil.  My number came up, and I refused induction into the freaking Army.  Twice. Of course, I knew that war was wrong in every conceivable way.  Even as a young child, I wondered what made the mass-murder of warfare okay, when murder on a personal basis was illegal.  I’d sure like to be able to say that my anti-war stance was firmly rooted in empathy and compassion for all mankind, and to a great extent it was.  But to an even greater extent, I did it out of selfishness.  I did it to save my own ass from a kill or be killed scenario. After doing time for my crime, I found out that in virtually every war waged by my country of birth, the blood of young men was shed for the benefit of the already wealthy profiteers at the top of the economic ladder.  I learned that the U.S.A. grew out of the deaths of millions of Native Americans, and that the sweat of enslaved Africans greased the wheels of capitalism.  I found out about Manifest Destiny, the theft of the northern half of Mexico, the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy, and a string of sordid wars across the globe, spanning two centuries.  It was a surprise to discover that the U.S.A. was behind Hitler’s rise to power, and largely responsible for 80 million deaths in World War II, and an even bigger surprise to find out about the Pentagon’s post-war plan to drop 204 atomic bombs on 66 Russian cities, and “Wipe The Soviet Union off the map.”  What a disappointment it must have been for our fighting forces when the world’s greatest fireworks show was not approved.  Since it is military policy to avoid counting the dead bodies, it is impossible to know the extent of American mayhem since WWII.  But according to James A. Lucas, my country is responsible for at least 20 million deaths in 37 countries since the end of the second war to end all wars. Just as summer must succumb to autumn, and autumn to dead, cold winter, all things must pass.  Cradles to graves, empires to dust.  I’ve never even fired a gun, and know nothing about weapons systems.  But fortunately The Saker does, and if he’s right, the bloody dance of the American Empire may be coming to an end.  It appears that while required reading at The Pentagon has been “The Power of Positive Thinking”, the Russian Military has been absorbed in “The Art of War”.  And while bloviating American politicians have been blathering about their country’s greatness, exceptionalism, and invulnerability, their Russian counterparts have been quietly building earth’s most formidable military arsenal.  Without going into detail (link to The Saker’s article), it now appears that The U.S. Empire is no longer militarily superior, nor invulnerable.  If this is correct, the long-standing nuclear standoff has tilted in extreme favor of the Russkies, and the United States now finds itself wielding a knife at a gunfight. Fortunately for those of us who live under the Stars and Stripes, who value and enjoy our allotted time to breathe, eat, procreate, and recreate, Vladimir Putin’s Russia represents a threat to no other country.  President Putin is apparently a wise man.  He understands human nature.  He knows that, as I stated above, selfishness may be the only reason most humans ever exhibit decent behavior.  He knows that capitalism has inadvertently castrated the U.S. Military Machine, and that The Pentagon must be aware that it is now in possession of simply second rate hardware.  Yes, America…the profits of Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon are, and have always been, more important than the quality of their products.  Russian jets, missiles, and bombs cost much less, but pack unparalleled punch.  Thou art no longer exceptional, America.  Thou art second rate when it comes to weaponry, and had better start considering standing down.  Reconsider thy threatening stance, and understand that thy choice now involves simply life or death.  Maintain thy stance, and prepare to meet thy Maker, or do what is right and take thy place righteously in the world community.
