Ruminations On Sex And Gender

  I  came across an acronym recently which puzzled me. Someone critical of J. K. Rowling’s position on transgender women accused the writer of being TERF.  I had to look up the term and found it means activists who seek to limit full equality for transgender people and exclude trans women from women’s spaces.  I was surprised. Nothing I’d read by Rowling suggested she wanted to limit transgender rights.  I’m not even sure she wants to exclude them from women’s spaces.  A recent poll revealed a majority of women don’t worry about sharing private spaces like bathrooms and dressing rooms with transgender women. What worries them were imposters in stilettos who mean to do them harm. Crimes of this sort may be rare, but to a victim, statistics mean little. Data, in fact, reveals a stunning irony. Transgenders face greater harm in private spaces than women.  In any case, Rowling’s fears, as I read them centered on how transgender issues affected women’s rights.  A long-time feminist, I decided to examine her arguments.     Because the library on sex and gender is vast, this blog will rely on two documents as I review the issue:  a) Rowlings’ “manifesto” on sex/gender and b) Scientific American’s article on what science has learned about the subject.  Rowling’s View: For the record, literature on problems that arise when transgender men identify as men is scarce.  The writer’s essay doesn’t address that question.  Her focus is on transgender women, specifically those who self-identify. She raises 5 points to explain why she objects to defining them as women.  1. She fears the erosion of women’s rights, believing that trans-activism will erode the legal definition of sex and replace it with gender. The broadening effect, she assumes, will have negative consequences for women. Except as a physical act, Rowling does not attempt to define sex as opposed to gender, so her argument doesn’t flow from any premise. To be fair, I could find no legal definition of sex either. In many cases, the terms sex and gender are used interchangeably. Here’s one example:  Sex may refer to either the gender of individuals in many species that are distinguished as being female or male. Constitutional law considers sex a “suspect classification”, so classifications made by public entities based upon gender are strictly scrutinized for a compelling state interest to support it. 2.Rowling explains that as a former teacher, she wants to safeguard the interest of children. Again, she fails to identify what those interests are. I can only point out that the transgender movement makes the same claim. 3. Rowling also worries that transgender campaigns will affect free speech. She cites the example of two women who lost their jobs because they opposed the transgender movement. That number pales, however, when compared to workplace firings of transgenders. 4. Rowling fears homophobia is driving many women to join the transgender movement. She admits she has no data to support this opinion, but points to social media as an influencer and couples it with patriarchy’s allure [for] escaping womanhood. 5. Her final point is anecdotal. As someone who lived as a battered spouse, she’s uncomfortable with transgender women who have done nothing but self-identify. She isn’t alone in that concern as the poll I cited earlier showed. Scientific American on Sex and Gender:  Recent scientific discoveries are testing our understanding of ourselves. As the Scientific American article explains, physiology isn’t a definitive marker for a person’s sex.  Possessing a penis or a womb doesn’t make an individual a man or a woman. Nor does the presence of XX and XY chromosomes.  The arguments are as follows. Genes within chromosomes can complicate sex identification.  …new technologies in DNA sequencing and cell biology are revealing that almost everyone is, to varying degrees, a patchwork of genetically distinct cells,  some with a sex that might not match that of the rest of the body…[suggesting] there’s a much greater diversity within male and female, and there’s certainly an area overlap where some people can’t define themselves within the binary structure.   As we know, the sex of an embryo is indeterminate during the first 4-5 weeks of gestation, a time in which genes do a  mysterious dance to manifest sex. During that time, various combinations of gene expression are possible.  What’s more, some scientists suspect sex assignment isn’t immutable. Realignments can occur post-natally without medical intervention due to hormonal changes.  Scientists base their suspicion on mice studies. We also know that individuals sometimes possess both male and female genitalia, one external and the other internal. A woman might discover this about herself while undergoing going fertility treatments, for example. Another condition is  Mosaicism. With this variant, a person has more than one genetic makeup. Fraternal twins are an example, a case when one embryo carries two different sets of genes.   More combinations exist but these are sufficient to explain why biologists see sex as a spectrum rather than binary.  If society wants a more definitive standard, it will have to draw a line somewhere along that spectrum to define male and female.  It wouldn’t be the first time society has made an arbitrary decision.  We award adulthood to individuals when they turn 18 even though the human brain doesn’t fully develop until the mid to late twenties. Another alternative to the sex/gender equation might be to eliminate the concept of sex, though it flies in the face of centuries of human understanding.  Yet another approach would be to establish a legal definition for a third sex. What we do know is that defining sex is complicated.  Learning a person’s gender is easier. Because the term refers to the way an individual’s emotional and mental identity aligns with biology, the best way is to ask.     Issues of Concern: Society will eventually decide where transgenders fit in the sexual spectrum. The Devil Judge Rewatch Ep 5 (Part 1)

If Ep 4 was their wedding, then Ep 5 is the developing relationship between Yohan and Gaon.

And it started with Gaon coming to apologise, after falsely accusing Yohan of murdering his brother.

Only to have his chin gripped by Yohan. It must have come as quite a surprise.

But Gaon had just jerked his chin away instead of showing a stronger reaction like maybe punch him or something. (I'm not sure if other guys will have taken it so calmly.)

And look at Yohan's reaction - as if he wasn't pleased having Gaon slip out of his fingers.

Then Gaon went on to confess that he had been spying on Yohan. Coming clean, maybe because he wanted to make amends for the wrong accusations he had thrown at Yohan.

And look at Yohan's reaction. Definitely amused and tickled.

And Yohan certainly hadn't expected Gaon to do some serious digging - going through his old trials. And that Gaon had detected Yohan planning to do something for a long time.

Look at Yohan, definitely intrigued by Gaon's deductions.

And then, Yohan looking a tad disappointed when Gaon said he didn't understand Yohan's reason for doing the above.

Yohan's like telling himself - what do you expect. Gaon's just like the rest, he won't ever know you.

Only to be thrown a curve ball by Gaon's next words.

And Yohan had shifted his eyes away. In fact, his eyes had darted here and there in this scene. And maybe I'm reading too much into it. But my guess is, he hadn't seen that coming. Gaon saying that he understand that one emotion - Yohan's anger.

And it had affected him in the sense that Yohan wasn't sure how he should react.

And here is where I really want to slap Gaon's head.

He and his big mouth - going on to say the worst thing possible after saying he understood Yohan's anger.

No wonder Yohan had reacted like this.

Then going on to demand that Gaon had better make his decision - to stay by his side or not. And that he had no qualms about getting rid of people who are in his way, pissing Gaon off.

And all that Yohan had said, if u were to follow on to what Yohan told K after Gaon had left the room.

You will know that Yohan didn't mean it - the threat to get rid of Gaon.

In all the other AUs, he is, but in I&K, he's learned his lesson and also he doesn't adopt Shardia, so adopting kids is new for him in this AU. From watching other couples take care of their kids, he learns how to treat them well (he also learns from Onyx since he's good with kids) and makes sure he never comes off as scary or cruel (although, he knows he's already crossed that line but wants to make amends).

Excerpt from quit telling everyone i'm (permanently) dead! (wip)

The black zirconium statue was larger than life. It towered above them on two separate, stepped obsidian pedestals, each about five-feet high. As Mateo moved closer, he could see something glittering in the bases. Danny mumbled something about ectoplasmic ice mixed into it, stronger than diamonds, but Mateo thought they looked like stars. He figured that was the intention. It was gorgeous.

He tilted his head back to take in the actual sculpture. That Danny was twice as large as the one standing next to Mateo. He felt his heart lurch a little at how serious Danny looked, the tight furrow over his brow, the determined set to his jaw. It all made him look so much older than even now, even though Mateo knew he was only sixteen when the statue was made.

The statue’s zirconium white accents were blinding in the late afternoon sunlight, and Mateo found himself shading his eyes as he looked up even higher. The hair on the statue was shorter than Mateo had seen Danny wear his, probably closer to the length it had been when he was in high school. It was swept back heroically, as if moved by an unseen wind, and the sun glinted off its sharp edges. It made the whole statue look as if it were glowing.

Crystalized ectoplasm made Phantom’s eerie green eyes, and they glowed too, though Mateo figured they probably glowed under their own power rather than a trick of the light. The statue’s eyes were trained on the thin, steel-wire Earth he cupped protectively close to his chest; it was a promise as well as a remembrance. The world remembered what Phantom did for them, and he promised them he would do it all over again if necessary.

No. Do you know how broke Ben's heart was when, after he'd done the one big fucked up thing, he went to the person he, maybe, actually, loved, and no matter how he tried to make amends, she wouldn't take him back? Oh, all kinds of things, dude. All kinds of things. Last few months have been heavy with Tolkien, in preparation for an essay I'm writing on Amazon's The Rings of Power (as a staggering example of acutely poor penmanship in the prosaic sense); this meant, of course, re-reading Unfinished Tales, The Book of Lost Tales Vol 1 & 2, Tales from the Perilous Realm, The Silmarillion, The Fall of Gondolin, The Fall of Númenor, Beren and Lúthien, The Nature of Middle-Earth, down on through The Hobbit and his epic The Lord of the Rings in its three volumes. I couldn't help but amend these with Humphrey Carpenter's J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography, John Garth's Tolkien and the Great War, and The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien as published by William Morrow, and The Story of Kullervo. Further reading included another read-through of the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, The Devourers by Indra Das, Off Season by Jack Ketchum, Reckless by Ed Brubaker, Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, The Conqueror's Shadow by Ari Marmell, A Midsummer Tempest by Poul Anderson, The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse, Ghost Story by Peter Straub, and also re-read Philip K. Dick's Second Variety, Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions, and Fitzroy Maclean's Eastern Approaches. I recently began reading The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica by James A. Owen after a passionate endorsement from a friend. So that's been my current companion.

Back on my FFXIII-Capital-G-God bullshit.

Went ahead and decided to watch the final battle in JP. Good lord... Look, I am no judge of Japanese voice-acting, but I feel so much of the jank is amended with just that. Lightning's voice-work is wonderful in both version's; Vel's, however... Dear lord does his English work feel generic and forced— WHICH honestly makes sense, considering the script-changes.

Yuki Kaji, who voices Hope, does an excellent job on this guy. Divinity, eagerness, and adolescence all executed brilliantly. You really get the sense that this is a being way over his head, who, in desiring to eventually walk among humanity in the new, flawless world he created, took on the body of a teenage boy— Volatile feelings and all.

I've spoken about this before, but Bhunivelze is just... Goodness, he is at once deeply well-meaning but also horrendously authoritarian. World's ending due to an overflow of Chaos, Bhunivelze seeks to create a new world for all the worthy, living souls, and destroy the Chaos— Issue is, Chaos is the collective souls of the dead: a Lifestream to use FFVII terms. You destroy that, you destroy all those souls awaiting rebirth, and destroy the memories of those deceased in their loved-ones— Vel considers this a positive, because as a demiurge with hitherto no prior experience with emotions(except endless paranoia after tossing his mother's body in the cosmic basement oop--), he considers grief a needless suffering to be washed away in his new world.

Having built her up to be the new goddess of death in the wake of Etro's death, Bhunivelze challenges Lightning to a last match after she rebels against him. Their dynamic, by the way, is extremely romantically-charged in the JP— Teenage boy feelings do that to you. After a longass, multi-phased fight, Lightning, inevitably, defeats him...

And he goes full:

This bitch, to the surprise of everyone in the arena including himself, starts sobbing his fucking eyes out. Realising he has lost control of the situation, and will have no part in the world he created, brother starts feeling it all— Sadness, grief, anger —The whole shebang.

My guy, in Peak Teenage Boy Angst, declares his intent to cast Lightning out. This, of course, proves ineffectual, and also One of the Most Video Game Divorces of All Time™! She wasn't even married to him! This is a trainwreck; I am obsessed with their dynamic; what is wrong with hiiiiiim????!?!

I bet £100 fucking bucks this guy was scribbling their initials together with hearts in some cheap pink spiral-bound notebook, kicking his non-existent legs back and forth as he imagines their wedding day. I bet he signed his diary entries with her surname. I can't. I'm fucking losing it. This is like Sephiroth if he was so much more desperate aND SEPHIROTH IS DESPERATE AS F U C K LMAOOO

Lightning is not having any of it. She signed up to get her sister back, not whatever the fuck this is. Did I mention he ripped the vestiges of Serah out of her heart, thereby emotionally crippling her? This fucking tool thought it'd be all fine once the plan went through. God. Dear God. He has no idea what he's toying with.

The fact that they toned all this down to Evil God Wants To Turn Humanity Into Mindless Slaves makes me so mad on so many levels, but I also wholly know why they did it.

The fact that Bhunivelze is an essentially all-powerful God who, to the best of his abilities, is genuinely sympathetic and loving, reiterating this time and time again, and yet not only despite but because of this fails in his role as a caretaker as he is unable, and unwilling to stoop down to humanity's level and engage with them on their own needs and terms, instead opting to follow his plan on crafting a utopia that would gut them of their memories and negative emotions struck a little too close for Western localisers.

Religion is a hot-button issue.

Far better to turn him into another cold, unrelatable Lucifer-like. Someone without love or care, who takes only to fuel his own arrogance.

I've talked before in another post similar to this written, god, what? A year ago? —About how this examination of a loving yet ultimately distant and detached god struck a chord with me. The romantic character especially— Within my old church, the relationship between God and the Church, you and He was always illustrated as akin to a groom and his bride.

I completely understand Lightning's drive to throw off that.

No love is worth being hollowed out. Even with the promise of being filled again.

X owner Elon Musk should be thrown in prison, said a senator in Australia yesterday, because he refuses to delete a video of a recent stabbing from X globally. “Whatever Elon Musk is on,” said Senator Jacqui Lambie, “it’s disgusting behavior. Quite frankly, the bloke should be jailed and the key thrown away.”

But what’s truly disgusting behavior is calling for the incarceration of someone for refusing to censor the entire global Internet on behalf of a single nation. It is not the right of any nation to decide what should be on the Internet around the world. “No president, prime minister, or judge,” responded Musk on X, “has authority over all of Earth!” He’s right.

It’s true that violent content online can be disturbing. I think platforms should put warning labels on them and find some way to prevent minors from seeing it. I also think there are real privacy concerns that should be addressed.

But violence is not the only thing the Australian government has told X to remove. It has also targeted political speech. And nothing can justify the Australian government censoring the entire global Internet of content it does not like.

Many of us, myself included, have long suspected that government censors in Ireland, Scotland, and the European Union would attempt to censor the whole of the Internet, not just in their own countries. With Brazil and now Australia demanding the power to censor the whole internet, it’s clear that our fears were more than justified.

And now, Public has learned that there is a formal government censorship network called the “Global Online Safety Regulators Network,” which Australia’s top Internet censor, Julie Inman Grant, who enjoys the right to free and unfettered speech courtesy of the Fist Amendment but would deny it to others, described at World Economic Forum. The group includes censors from Australia, France, Ireland, South Africa, Korea, the UK, and Fiji.

But before getting to that, it’s first important to understand just how powerful she is. Here is Julie Inman Grant, boasting of her extraordinary censorship powers (emphasis added):

Yes, we do regulate the platforms. We have a big stick that we can use when we want to …. They’re going to be regulated in ways that they don’t want to be regulated.

In a different video, Inman Grant said,

We also have some pretty significant ISP blocking powers. We just had some new powers given to us… in addition to be able to compel that takedown, to be able to fine perpetrators as a deterrent effect, and fine content hosts that don’t take down this content, um, we can, um, We also have something in this new legislation called the basic online safety expectations.

She goes on to say that she is already working with Ireland, the UK, France, and other governments around the world.

We use the tools that we have, and we can be effective, but we know we’re going to be, go much further, um, when we work together with other like-minded independent statutory authorities around the globe … with the U. K. With Ireland and with Fiji in November 2022, we launched the global online safety regulators network that has now grown to seven independent regulators, including France, South Korea, South Africa and a number of countries are serving as observers.

At the World Economic Forum, Inman Grant said she had launched a global censorship body called “the Global Online Safety Regulators Network” to unify governments around censorship “So that we could have a form to help us coordinate, build capacity and do just that. But also make sure that what we’re going to have differences in our regulatory schemes, there would be common values that drive us together.”

This global censorship body gives governments extraordinary power to invade privacy, explained Inman-Grant:

What this legislation will give us is the ability to compel basic device information and account information. And more and more and more social media companies are starting to collect phone numbers and email addresses so that our investigators can at least find a place to issue a notice or a takedown notice or infringement notice of some sort.

Inman Grant may be working with other governments to create identity requirements and to stamp out Virtual Private Networks, which millions of people in China and other totalitarian societies use to access the free Internet. “You can use VPNs, you can use burner phones,” she said, “different SIM cards every day. So it’s going to be a challenge for a long time because, again, the internet’s global. If there is no such thing as a kind of global identity system or even a piece of identity everybody can agree with, you know, should we all be sharing our driver’s license or our passports?”

At that same World Economic Forum meeting, one of the European Union’s top censors, Věra Jourová, called for censorship to avoid “events like January 6”, and to fight hate speech.

“The same thing, uh, reaction on the 6th of January, 2020. So, in Europe, of course, we have our history. We had to take action against hate speech. Because what it is, anti-Semitism, racism, LGBT, the menu is always the same.”

Jourva explains that the EU and Australia intend to pressure social media companies to implement global censorship to simplify things.

OK, so we can now eat things, but how did we get that house to begin with? Well let's take a gander at our 'make' verb: mo-. To start with, this is relatively well-behaved verb: imperfective realis stem mo:-, imperfective irrealis mó-, perfective stem ɣummo-.

However! I'm going to make an amendment to Lexember 12! I implied there that perfective verbs inflect for person just like imperfective ones do. This I've now realised to be incorrect, because these forms, having been originally adjectival formations, originally didn't take verbal person inflections. However, they did inflect for the person of the subject when it was 1, 21 or 2, but this time with forms identical with those used with possessed nouns. So for 'make', the paradigm for the perfective is like so:

So as you can see, the stem behaviour of the perfective is substantially different from that of the imperfective, with length and tone alternations being conditioned by person rather than by reality status.

And let's also introduce another voice alternation to complement the causative, the reflexive (or perhaps 'auto-benefactive', depending on the verb). This was historically a suffix, likely *-(u)t-, which followed the root. However, this ended up undergoing some fusion with the classifier suffix, such that the actual reflex of this suffix is as a gemination of the conjugation II variant of the classifier suffix, which combines with the person suffixes to make the following paradigm (here with the perfective).

This by itself is sufficient to construct a reflexive clause, but sometimes som re-inforcement is desired, so re-inforcing pronouns are also available. For SAPs the free pronouns or clitics may be used, e.g. rú:n'sʲa ɣummonnsʲə 'I made the house for myself', sʲa ɣummonnsʲə 'I made it for myself'. There also exists a reflexive root βo-, which takes the possessive suffixes to agree with its antecedent: this is an alternative strategy for SAPs but the sole available one for 3rd persons: thus βo:sʲ ɣummonnsʲə 'I made it for myself', βont ɣummonn 'He made it for himself' (note the agreement with a covert class I feature on the reflexive). This pronoun can take the ablative and locative suffixes as any other noun, with the same provisos as noted for possessed nouns of SAP suffixes before case, 3rd person ones after: thus βo:sʲtʃ 'from myself', βóɬəm 'to/in ourselves' but βotʃənt 'from himself', βomənk 'to/in itself'.

This reflexive conjugation is actually the default inflection to use with 'eat', partly to do with the self-affecting nature of eating. Thus rather than nʲunʲuk tsʲá:βn 'they are eating some fish', the more usual construction would be nʲunʲuk tsʲá:βənn 'They are eating (themselves) some fish'. Thus 'eat' is for most speakers a deponent verb! Will wonders never cease...

Nothing to do with the subject of this blog lol, but book recommendations. I've read The Sparrow too and I loved it. Do you have any favorite books that feel similar to that one?

Lmao god bless you Ok, nothing is like as directly similar but here are things in my taste range that i believe are complimentary. I also would love your recs because I read so rarely for pleasure now that when I do, I just gobble it down and then am bereft for the rest of the week. I wish to amend this.

Black Box by Amos Oz. Incredible emotional storytelling and Anne in the sparrow made me think of Ilana in some ways. This book was irritating at points and at other times heartbreaking but it was all very meaty and bizarre and looked intently at the way academia and religion both impact how we navigate emotion. If you wanted MORE judaism, here it is! Not scifi or fantasy btw.

The Left Hand of Darkness by thee Ursula K LeGuin. I think you've probably read this but it is so captivating. Aliens and a the moral neutrality of the landscape versus the people who populate it. God tier worldbuilding and the tantalizing peeps of social stratification in a world where everyone is both sexes. I feel it likely influenced the sparrow like it has influenced everyone who has ever come after it.

Light by M John Harrison. Much harder tech scifi, but elements of body horror and sacrifice that i come back to over and over again. Hang in there.

Under the Pendulum Sun, by Jeanette Ng. Weird, unsettling faerie world and two well-meaning christian siblings. I really like what this attempts.

Lilith's Brood by Octavia Butler. Another classic, much less about encountering another world so much as being forcibly assimilated. Very little familiar ground to grip on, i think for me it's in the outer circle of overlap to the sparrow.

And finally, the short story All My Darling Daughters by Connie Willis, available in pdf somewhere on the internet. Horrible!

honorable mention goes to The Three Body Problem because of the delicious technical issues with time and space, as well as cosmic revenge enacted by humans. however i am a huge bitch and i get tired of reading about so many men and i the second book veered hugely into this issue imho but its still such an achievement i am gritting my teeth and including it.
