Bryan Lee O'Malley remarking that he had Scott explicitly spell out that his relationship with Knives was inappropriate in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off because he feels like a lot of the comic's readers maybe didn't pick up on that is very funny not only because how do you not, but also because the original Scott Pilgrim comics are some of the most didactic media I've ever read outside of, like, medieval Christian allegories about the wages of sin. It's just constantly explaining to the reader exactly why Scott is a bad person, sometimes with little annotated diagrams. Genuinely, what's it gonna take for the twentysomething male audience not to idolise a loser?

I think a lot of people's idea of how religion works is that it's just an oppression factory or something. I'm not even just talking about Christianity here. It's like when people choose to wear clothing specific to their religion and people try to tell them that they're oppressed and they're like no lol my family would support me if I decided against it I chose this of my own free will and people still try to preach to them about their own experience or something.
Like yeah mandatory caveat that you need to believe people about their religious trauma but sometimes it really is fine. Sometimes it's hard to tell when it's fine. Sometimes it's not fine. And that's life. Religions are connected to identity and family and politics and heritage. All extremely messy things that don't have an inherent goodness or badness to them. Religion can be a tool of the oppressor or empowerment for the oppressed. Both things can be true at once. I'm not here trying to make excuses for anyone or anything. I'm just like. It's complicated. It's all complicated. It's more complicated than a lot of you seem to think it is.

Oh gosh, you're a cult worshipper aren't you? Ugh... I really liked your blog too... That's a real shame. Sorry, but as an atheist there's no way I can be friendly with a cult worshipper. You are the reason why there are so much bad shit in the world. Your kind makes me sick. And your queer too! That's the kicker. Have fun explaining to your sky daddy why you should go to 'heaven' even though your queer. I'll see you in hell, fucker!
This is so funny I have to share with all of you.

You ever find yourself down and out, going through a real dark night of the soul? Well if your name's Vash, then fortunately for you, you've got a Meryl Stryfe on your side.
Tumblr media
She came in clutch, and I'm proud of her. Nightow even conveys the moment Meryl's words of resolve reach Vash as a burst of light in the dark. After Vash kills Legato, we see his soul teetering on the brink. He feels truly lost, boxed inside an all-black space, wondering what reason he has to go on living, "What's there left to see?"
And as if in answer to prayer, sparks of light begin to appear around him. As our eyes follow the flow of panels down to the lower left, we're then hit with the impact of the space around Vash brightening dramatically as he hears Meryl's words. Her faith calls him out of the void, and he gets the answer to his question: Here are the people fighting to realize your dream. Here's the woman who declares that she's among those who will share your burden because it doesn't matter if you broke the vow that defined you for so long - you're still worth believing in. And here, right in front of you is a fragment of your sisters' memories - the key to finally bridging the gap between them and humanity. There's so much left to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love how in every version of Trigun, it's the sheer persistence of Meryl's faith that pulls Vash out of his lowest points (I know Stampede hasn't reached this climax in Vash's emotional journey yet, but I think what we've seen with Meryl helping him break Knives' control is a foretaste of bigger things to come). That tenacity and refusal to give up are so central to her character. Once her convictions are set, she's incredibly steadfast in them, and it's this steadfastness that makes the Mary Magdalene comparisons even more fitting.
In Thomas Aquinas' reflection on Mary Magdalene, he calls her devotion "constant," and says "it deserves praise" as a quality that "made her fit to see the angels." Aquinas remarks that while the other disciples left when Jesus was buried, Mary Magdalene stayed because of her "stronger and more burning affection." Thus, she is privileged among the saints as the chosen witness and messenger:
"Notice the three privileges given to Mary Magdalene. First, she had the privilege of being a prophet because she was worthy enough to see the angels, for a prophet is an intermediary between angels and the people. Secondly, she had the dignity or rank of an angel insofar as she looked upon Christ, on whom the angels desire to look. Thirdly, she had the office of an apostle; indeed, she was an apostle to the apostles insofar as it was her task to announce our Lord's resurrection to the disciples."
So how fitting is it that Meryl ends the story as a news reporter and thereby having even more power to tell Vash's story? She has witnessed the most hidden aspects of him (a fact that makes a great point of comparison to the characterization of Mary Magdalene in the extracanonical Gnostic Gospels), and there's so much she could say to help the rest of the world learn to understand him. She now has the resources to share his message on a much greater scale, and in those last few pages we see that the people Vash met in his travels, people like Lina and her grandmother and Badwick's family, are among those watching the broadcast. Meryl gets the word out to others who came to know him directly: He is risen.
Tumblr media
"Mary answered and said, What is hidden from you I will proclaim to you. And she began to speak to them these words: I, she said, I saw the Lord in a vision and I said to Him, Lord I saw you today in a vision. He answered and said to me, Blessed are you that you did not waver at the sight of Me. For where the mind is there is the treasure." -Gospel of Mary (extracanonical)

Everything Tumblr has told you about Moby-Dick is absolute bullshit, and everything that Tumblr has told you about Moby-Dick is 100% true. It’s a travelogue fantasy. It’s proto-science fiction. It’s cosmic horror. It’s shockingly original and it’s shamelessly plagiaristic. It’s a misotheistic Christian parable in which the whale is the mask of a cruel, uncaring God and Ahab is Satan himself, not as trickster or as tempter, but as doomed hero. It’s the most gripping thing you’ll ever read. It’s boring as shit. But above all else – and I cannot emphasise this enough – it is filled with Facts About Whales.

My dad isn’t religious and today I had reason to explain the story of Cain and Abel to him and he asked me what it means and I was like whatever interpretation you have of that story has probably been discussed one billion times already

God: I don't. You are my weakest soldier, and these battles are so easy. It's a letter. Why are you crying?

maybe youve already written about this, but have you ever thought about a yandere priest?? 🫣 theres barely any in the already very niche yandere community and as someone who has a thing for priests and corruption, hnnggggg. i think itd make very good material for some batshit crazy yandere. itd be a mess, really. maybe a priest willing to abandon their god for you, rid themself of their white collar, breaking their servitude. to get on their knees to pray for forgiveness not to the lord above, but to pray at the altar of your flesh.
maybe, a priest who truly believes that you are the epitome of purity, so they must keep you clean and rid of all sin threatening to corrupt you. even if it means sullying their hands to keep you pure.
or maybeeee a truly unhinged priest who stumbles upon a broken darling and gives them promises to shepard you into the light, so you must trust them for they'll wash you of your sins. how could you distrust a servant of god?
OR, OR, its just some overzealous heretic who uses the word of god to justify their actions, whilst manipulating you to falling on your knees upon their feet.
Ugh I ADORE yandere priests. The type to make you the focus point of worship? YES! The ones who have abandoned their god because you have brought them more bliss and salvation? Tasty. The ones who see you as their god and even possibly makes others believe it too? Delicious, 10/10, its always so good! I also really love the ones you mentioned where they see you as everything pure as portrayed in their books, so they must protect you, they can't let you fall into unworthy hands, must be the only ones to ever touch such a beautiful, pure image of perfection. I've written about a few, years ago, it's been a while, but its a wonderful trope with so many ways to write about it! makes me wonder who fits this trope the best, there's so many good characters!

You know, I’m not religious but for the sake of the phrase, I pray for anyone who would try to say that people like me (autistic / disabled / could be considered mentally ill) wouldn’t have survived in the ancient world, because whoo boy. I’d have a whole infodump locked and ready for that one LMAO get ready to hear about how autistic people were frequently considered blessings/connected to the gods/etc, how disabled people have been loved and cared for since before the invention of writing, and/or how mentally ill people were loved and had happy lives and even considered religious figures all throughout history. Just because recent history has been badly ableist doesn’t mean I’m not worth anything or that I’m only alive due to modern mercies
