A friend of mine has been trying to get funds transferred from their 401k to a IRA for 6 months. They’ve been told the funds can’t be released for some reason—something like they need to finish closing the books? Is this legal? Can the people who have your 401k funds just refuse to give them to you?

This doesn't sound right to me. Your friend needs to ask more questions to fully understand the situation.

I'm willing to bet their 401(k) funds have not "fully vested" yet. In which case, your friend doesn't own the total funds of their 401(k) at the moment, and the funds therefore can't be moved. Here's what that all means:

The good news is that moving these funds over is not a huge emergency. They're safely in the 401(k), which is a tax-advantaged retirement account just like an IRA. They're still accruing interest and FDIC insured. But your friend should also read our advice about rolling them over, and maybe contact our partner Capitalize for help understanding the problem. I believe there simply are names that by their sonority, by the way they sound together, just sound cool. Like they were made up by corporate commercials. I'm talking Robin Williams. Kim Kardashian. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Hugh Jackman. Cameron Diaz. Steven Spielberg. Al Pacino. Drew Barrymore. Jean Dujardin. Jennifer Anniston. Antonio Banderas.

Not saying they got where they are because of their names. But there's something about the way these words roll on the tongue that makes you want to say them and it definitely helped their brand.
