Day 3: Camera.

*Shikamaru walking into the Hokage office*

Shikamaru: Lord Hokage? I just have a few papers for you to look over before you leave for the night, and —

Shikamaru: Eh?

*the room seems to be empty; until Shikamaru notices a sandal sticking out from underneath the desk*

Shikamaru, crouching down: … what are you doing under there??

Kakashi: Hiding.

Shikamaru: From?

Kakashi: Gai.

Shikamaru: Why are you hiding from him?

Kakashi: This morning, before I left, I accidentally ate the last of his chocolate cake. I thought he wouldn’t notice but he’s been messaging me all day asking where it is. I finally told him I ate it and he said he’s “coming to pick me up” after work.

Shikamaru, sighing: Lord … Kakashi-Sensei. You’re the Hokage. You’re the leader of our entire village. You can’t be scared over something so mundane.

Kakashi: Maybe you’re right.

Kakashi: By the way, Temari stopped in while you were running errands earlier. She wanted to know why you didn’t take out the garbage this morning like she asked you to. Seemed pretty angry; she also said she’d be by for YOU after work. But I guess you’re not scared of that, right?

Shikamaru:

Shikamaru: *gets on his hands and knees and crawls under the desk* Move over.

Not one to just sit by and recover by relaxing

Bedtime Story

Obito is fighting a lot of demons because all those voices and urges can’t disappear without a trace all at once. He needs support, he needs someone to believe in him. Kakashi gives him that. They sit on his bed. Obito has learnt what affection is like, and he is learning how to show it himself. Deep in his heart he knows he doesn’t deserve it, but Kakashi’s voice is reassuring. He says that he cares; he says that he loves him, the real him, and that he will be there. Through all the bad things, unpleasant things. Obito asks to tell him this again, and one more time. He draws Kakashi closer, their foreheads touch. Obito’s hand moves slowly, gently and stops over Kakashi’s heart. It flutters; it overflows with fondness. For a split second everything stops. Mokuton release swiftly pierces the heart. Kakashi recoils, finds Obito’s gaze, and doesn’t recognize the face three inches away. Mad red eyes are there instead of Obito’s familiar loyal, wondering brown.

Kakashi wakes up in cold sweat scooting away to the edge of the bed. It’s the same bed, the same dark room, so he’s trying to shake it off as fast as he can and get a grip on reality. He’s not new to nightmares, but this… This was horror. Seeing those eyes again, filled with that ruthless crazy determination to put an end to everything, was nothing less than devastating. He turns on the night lamp to invite some warm light into the bedroom and dissipate the remaining fear of… Obito. 

He takes a deep inaudible breath and turns to look at the man sleeping next to him. Splayed on his side of the bed, Obito is occupying as much space as possible. He is lying on his back with the blanket covering only his stomach. His left leg is resting on Bull who doesn’t mind serving as a footrest as long as he is allowed on the bed now and then. Another ninken occupies half of Obito’s pillow (because “He can’t just take my favorite pillow, Boss! I don’t care if it was his in the first place!”). Unaware of his furry rival, Obito has his head tilted to the left, so Biscuit’s butt is only millimeters away from his nose. 

Kakashi contemplates the scene and can’t help but chuckle. After having taken in the view, he turns off the light and quietly moves closer to gently guide Obito’s head away from the dog’s bum to the right side. He notices a couple of dog hairs on his cheek and blows them away. Then he settles on his left side next to Obito, facing him. Before Kakashi can go back to sleep he takes Obito’s right arm and hugs it in, close to his chest. 

It was just a bad dream.

Obito: *walks behind Kakashi and drops a kiss on his cheek* How are you liking your meal, birthday boy? Kakashi: Obi, have I ever told you that I love it when you cook me dinner?

Obito, blushing: No, but —

Kakashi: Then why do you keep doing it? Babe … *holds up his plate* I have your other sharingan and I can’t even begin to decipher what this is supposed to be …

Obito: It’s tuna casserole, you asshole!

Kakashi: Are these hard things pipe cleaner pieces or —

Obito: Noodles. And look, I even went to the trouble of putting in a lot of color for you!

Kakashi: Okay but … marshmallows? With tuna and mayonnaise??

Obito: It’s not mayonnaise, it’s cream. Well, actually, it’s milk that was about to go bad, but, same thing. Now come on, I worked hard on this so eat up!

Kakashi: But —

Naruto, on his second plate: C’mon big bro! Obito-nisaan is a great cook, dattebayo! This almost tastes better than ramen!

Kakashi, to himself: Okay, if I just get through this one plate then —

Obito: By the way, save room for dessert! We’ve made you a really big birthday cake!

Kakashi: Oh? That sounds —

*smoke alarm goes off*

Naruto: Sounds like it’s ready! Oi, Obito-nii; why is there wax dripping from the oven?

Obito: Hm; maybe we should have waited to put the candles on until after the cake was done …

Kakashi: *groans* I can’t believe this happened to me …

Sakura, sitting at his side: You mean you can’t believe you completely exhausted your chakra during one of your ridiculous competitions with Gai-Sensei? Yeah, me either. *holds up a spoonful of medicine* Say ahh…

Sasuke: You know, you really should just leave him alone. He’s never gonna learn if you keep babying him every time this happens.

Sakura: Sasuke-kun, you’re REALLY not one to talk right now, considering your “patient”.

Naruto, from his pallet on the floor: C’mon Sasuke! More ramen! I can’t get better without more ramen, dattebayo!

Sasuke: Tsk; you idiot! Eating that crap is what got you into this in the first place! You and Kakashi!

Kakashi: In Naruto’s defense …

Sakura: No, there is no defense here, Sensei. You know spicy food upsets your stomach, so you shouldn’t have agreed to Gai’s ultra-hot udon eating contest! I’m no Uchiha but I’m pretty sure the sharingan isn’t supposed to be used for things like that!

Sasuke: And usuratonkachi, if you and Lee had just stuck to ramen you probably would have been fine. But no, you had to add five-alarm hot sauce into it!

Naruto, indignantly: A challenge isn’t a challenge unless it’s super-hard, idiot.

Kakashi: You two, stop fighting. This noise isn’t helping my recovery. I have to get better as soon as possible; there’s a bbq eating competition that Gai asked me to do in three days, so -

Naruto: Oh, hey, bushy-brows challenged ME to that, too! *struggles to sit up* Sensei, let’s train together so that we beat both of ‘em!

Kakashi: Great idea, Naruto! Sakura, Sasuke, can you guys run to that bbq place that Asuma takes his team to? Pick us up some wings with the hottest sauce they have, so Naruto and I can practice —

Sakura: *bonks Kakashi over the head so that he passes out*

Sasuke, to Naruto: Are you going to be a good boy and go to sleep by choice? Or do I need Sakura to persuade you, too?

Naruto:

Naruto: *turns over on his side and starts exaggeratedly snoring*

Kakashi's grieving more now than he ever thought he could, even if he doesn't yet have a reason to. He grieves his eye sight, he grieves his childhood friend, he grieves the innocence lost in the war. Mostly though, he grieves Gai, even though he's not dead.
