I think it's hilarious how Suzanne Collins has such vibrant, deep characters but we only get useful descriptions of some of them. Like, we know every inch of Ripred, it's clear that she knew excatly what that dreamy beast was supposed to look like, but there's absolutely no consensus on the bats, especially Ares. My writers' group and I have been trying desperately to figure out just how big the bats are, but there's not a lot to go off of. Their carrying capacity is important for all the logistics, but weather they can carry a whole boat or just three kids and a cockroach is always up in the air. It doesn't help that Ares, the one we get to see the most of, is just legendarily jacked. He can carry a whole ass Ripred (who again, we have clear descriptions of, he's six feet tall and jacked to hell and back as well). So okay, got it, the bats are huge as well, but then we get all these descriptions of them just vibing in enclosed spaces, and when Ares gets arrested it only takes two people to carry him to trial. Are the Regalians just also incredibly jacked? How many body builders are there down here? We also just never get to know what kind of bat Ares (or any of the other fliers for that matter) is. It really is just left up to the artist's interpretation. There's cover art of him as a microbat, a flying fox, some weird amalgamation of both... there are no wrong answers. I love seeing all the fanart here because we can't agree either so we just get a big buffet of different beautiful bats to look at.

The only concrete bat descriptions we get are that they all have bright, vibrant, and diverse warrior-cats OC pelts. You got your adorable tabby bats, your zebra bats, evil red bats, and edgy loner black bats.

If your OC was at a karaoke night, what would be their go-to song? Would they even partake? Bonus points for a little story.

I'm a bit late to the Music Monday tag, but alas this song so screams Jacob x Mercedes to me.

Now this is a part two to Sabrina's snippet, where Mercedes is feeling a bit down at the absence of a certain ginger as the night progresses. Would she choose something more provocative had he been at the table with the rest of the group, just to get a rise out of him... absolutely. But this song just feels like something she'd pick in the context of the snippet. 🤍

Mercedes wrapped up her song, ignoring the hollering from around the bar, instead focusing on the table where John and Sabrina were close to giving everyone in the Spread Eagle a show. Their happiness was another pesky reminder Jacob had declined time and time again to go out with her and pretty much refused to hang out with the people who had become important to her over the last couple of months. "A girl of many talents, Mer.", Calahan whistled when she sat back down across from him. She forced a smile as she ran her index finger over the edge of her glass mindlessly, contemplating heading home first for once with her mood souring by the minute. "You okay?", Sabrina asked from John's lap, who finally seemed relaxed after spending a full hour looking like he was about to sneak out the second they shifted their eyes away from him. "Yeah.", Mercedes mumbled and got back up, "I'm gonna catch some fresh air." The second she pushed the bar's door open and another song started, she heard Hartley call out after her, "Wait up." They sat in silence, taking in the cool air outside as Hartley took a drag after drag from his cigarette before he eventually spoke up, "You know, he's gonna come around." "Who?", she retorted absently. "Jacob, the bastard who has you all mopey. Who else?" "It's nothing like that." "You can talk to us, Mer. No need to act fake happy." She sighed, "Fine. I wish he'd swallow his pride and come. But he wouldn't ever. I'm trying… to accept it." Calahan raised an eyebrow and finished his cigarette, "John did." "They ain't the same, Cal." "They're brothers.", was all he muttered before heading inside.

Hours passed in a blur where she tried her hardest to have fun, ignoring Jacob's absence until the party crowd began to thin out and John and Sabrina announced they're leaving, she turned down their offer for a ride to the ranch, choosing to stay a little longer. The two said their goodbyes, leaving the table empty with Calahan popping out for a smoke again just then and Leslie conversing with fellow Resistance members at the bar. Mercedes pushed back her chair with a frown, aiming for the ladies' room with even strides, a part of her regretting the idea to stay. Get yourself together. He's missing out. The second she was past the doorway leading to the toilets, a hand wrapped around her wrist, pulling her sideways into a secluded corner. "Hands off, asshole.", she said in a stern tone, fully prepared to deal with some drunken patron, instead blue eyes stared at her in amusement. "Having fun?", Jacob chirped, quirking up a smile her way. "You're here.", she retorted, feeling disbelief at his appearance. "Where else would I be?" "You said-" He interrupted her swiftly as his hands gripped her waist and brought her closer into his body, "I heard you sing. Was the song for me?" "Maybe. What did you think?", she tried to keep the giddiness in her voice at bay, but his presence and the fact he had been there a while made it almost impossible. "Loved it, sweetheart." "Yeah?" Jacob's lips brushed over hers as he whispered, "Let me drive you home and show you how much." She gripped onto his shirt, already wishing they were all alone, "Home?" "The ranch. You're staying there, aren't you? Or should I say, we are, now?" Mercedes nodded, "I need to say goodbye to Cal and Leslie." He dipped down for a brief kiss, thumb running over her cheek when he replied, "Go on then. I will be waiting." Progress. She knew it was indeed that, that the fact he had showed up at a bar in a different region held a promise, Calahan's words came back to her as she left him to lurk in the shadows.

a thing i have JUST realized, isn't the human brain amazing lol -- is that we talk about izzy's thoughts and feelings on ed, on blackbeard, about how he serves one but not the other, etc, etc, and how it means he never loved or even respected the True Man Underneath It All but rather the bloodthirsty legend of a pirate--

e x c e p t izzy is not the first person who makes the distinction between edward and blackbeard. it's ed himself, when he says "actually, i want to be called edward from now on".

before, when he was with stede, it didn't bother him at all that the crew called him blackbeard. that was his name! he was blackbeard, what else would they call him. only stede and izzy got to "ed" or "edward" him, because they were closer -- stede was his first close friend, izzy was his friend and first mate for decades. (note that fang was with ed the longest, but he doesn't call him by his name! you gotta deserve it.)

izzy doesn't do anything inappropriate or out of proportion when he snaps at the crew to call him blackbeard or captain -- that's who ed is, is supposed to be, to them. they're not friends! they even call stede captain, and have you seen that guy?

it's ed that makes the connection between his current state: draped in fuchsia robes, singing sad songs about how sad he is, showing his vulnerable and emotional state in front of people who are supposed to respect and trust his authority. and by that he splendidly loses that authority, to the point that wee john calls him ed, and when izzy snaps at him for disrespecting his captain, ed goes no, actually, yknow what, do call me edward! and then he goes on to encourage the crew to sing as well and hey, actually, why are we being pirates! we should do a talent show!

the distinction is clear here. before all that, in izzy's eyes, his boss was blackbeard, captain, ed/edward -- different names for different occasions, but one and the same guy. but now? this guy singing songs in a pink bathrobe doesn't want to be called blackbeard, he's edward! ed time now! we're going to eat marmalade and express our feelings in front of everyone! and hold talent shows! Ya Hoo !

yeah, it's no wonder izzy doesn't want that. he wants his competent captain back, and this current dude, edward? he's not him. so, uh,

Chillin’ with the Lads™ at Camp Magnus

(Heads up that the TMA discord that I mod for is hosting a “Camp Week” packed full of super cool daily events hosted from July 1st to July 7th and if you’re interested, you should definitely join! The link and more information can be found below the cut.)

Welcome to The Magnus Institute!

We’re a 15+ TMA community and daily live-listen discord server with over 350 members that’s here for you to make friends, chill out, and prepare you for The Magnus Protocol!

Our goal is to foster a community that can involve anyone and everyone: from hardcore TMA veterans to those who have never listened to the podcast before. We've got some epic channels that create fun spaces for artists, writers, gamers, and theorists, along with those who’re just into chilling out.

The start of Camp Week means lots of events! Feel free to join the server to check out the full schedule, but here’s a short list of some events we’ll be hosting from Saturday July 1st to Friday July 7th;

We’ve also set up cabins to create a little bit of camp spirit and competition! By participating in events, you’ll be able to win points for your cabin which will be tallied at the end of the week to determine who reigns supreme! You’ll be able to choose to join 1 of 4 cabins; Gertrude’s Goobers, Leitner’s Losers, Mikaele’s Malewives, and Smirke’s Seniors.

We also have a Minecraft Server dropping on the 1st along with the start of camp week! So if you’re into mining or crafting, make sure to check out the server.

I should also note that a big part of our server’s draw is the daily live listens. We’ve been listening to an episode of TMA every day since March, and as of today (the 26th), we’re on MAG 92 - Nothing Beside Remains. So, if you’d like to join us (or catch up) and listen to the last half of the podcast alongside a live chat every day at 6pm BST and 6pm PT, then we’d love to have you!

˚˖𓍢ִ໋🪼‧₊˚ Rafayel - The beach is an obvious answer. For him, a beachside restaurant is an ideal place to hangout and enjoy a meal. I don't think we ever saw him visiting an art exhibitions of other artists (pls correct me if I'm wrong), but he probably enjoys visiting galleries for inspiration. Would Monet be one of his favorite artists?

𝄞⨾𓍢ִ໋🐦‍⬛⨾𓍢ִ໋ 𝄞 Sylus - As he said, most restaurants don't like to experiment with food, so he visits the ones no one has ever heard of before. His armories (plural) are places where he goes to relax and probably brainstorm his next moves. When his business takes him to Linkon city, he likes to visits parks and gaze at real plants. Karaoke bars.

⋆꙳❅☃️* Zayne - The man has a sweet tooth, so obviously he regularly visits his favorite pastry shops and likes checking out new ones. He might like going to the gym, where he gets move his body and activate his muscles, while listening to his favorite music and just getting into the zone. But mostly, since his schedule is so hectic, his apartment would be his favorite place - where he gets to cook his favorite meals, try out new recipes, and to just unwind.

Hey, I need some urgent help! My boyfriend and I are enjoying the summer on a cruise. Its been great but he wanted to play in one of these stupid game shows. They call it a couples make over or something. We thought it would be funny, like just clothes or something. But they use the chronivac to give a real make over experience with audience input. Well apparently they thought it would be funny to turn my boyfriend into a hairy southern redneck with the thickest accent I've ever heard. I asked him if he's alright and I swear they must've dropped his IQ too. He sounds so stupid. And he's totally into it- he asked to stay this way for the rest of the trip! And now he keeps riling up the crowd telling them to give him a good southern boy to match him. They're taking me back stage now! Please, I need some help!

Okay. I'm afraid I'm late again. You're already on stage. Your transformation seems to have been successfully completed as well.

"Guys, thanks uh lot fahwar thuh transformation. Nuthin' beats thuh lads frum Alabama! Few wonna say sum reeyul dick, come visit us in cabin 1862!" you shout into the microphone. Your friend adds, "Don't knock, gist come in. But beware, we're always naked in thuh cabin. Git reddy fahwar twice 12 inches uh prime beef between our legs."

Dang, you two make a much prettier couple than before that way, though. Okay, you're both as thick as two short planks. But hell, you've got abs!

As a bonus, I made almost all of your tops disappear by the end of the cruise. All you have left are a couple of tank tops. And your necklaces. They go great with the huge belt buckles and the cowboy boots.

Now make your way to the karaoke bar. Sweet Home Alabama. At least twice. And afterwards something nice by Dolly Parton. Have fun!

John always chimes in when you’re listening to jazzy music like Frank Sinatra’s and Michael Bublé’s.

Despite claiming otherwise, he’s guilty of giving many a home concert when he thinks you’re out the door. So more often than not, it’s you catching him singing.

John loves singing to you while slow dancing in the kitchen. The most stupid grin will break out on his lips when he does. But, honestly, can you blame him? He’s on Cloud Nine whenever you’re in his arms.

(Or balancing on his toes as he guides you through the dance)

Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley

Ghost leans against the fridge while watching you quietly sing to yourself. Usually it’s him cooking dinner, but after much debating you finally managed to convince him to let you do it (for the first time in two months).

Now, the only time Simon will allow for Ed Sheeran is when you’re singing along to his songs like this evening. Although, he also doesn’t turn off your music when you’re listening to the singer-songwriter while cleaning the house (another daily debate because he’s actually a bit of a neat freak).

He likes it better when you sing something else, however. In fact, a proud warmth spreads in his chest when he notices you’re singing along to one of the playlists he’s made for you. Sure, he doesn’t expect you to scream your lungs out during certain parts of songs by Sleep Token or Bad Omens. But he does like that you’re listening to and evidently liking the songs he likes.

It’s difficult for Simon to express himself and to communicate with you (at times). However, he’s glad he’s found a way via music.

Little do you know how much your voice comforts him, puts him at ease.

It’s his guide to you.

And he wants to hear every single note.

Kyle ‘Gaz’ Garrick

Gaz immediately joins you in song, phone in hand and iTunes on if he doesn’t know the lyrics. Fight me on this, but I dare to bet he kinda sounds like Pharell Williams.

Kyle flat out refuses to participate in karaoke, though. Simon knows not to pressure him any further when he does (he’s lost microphone rights after one song the first time you and the lads went), but Soap and John don’t take ‘no’ for an answer as easily. Eventually they do… after you’ve told them off for the third time. He’ll never admit it, but Kyle’s glad you come to his aid. Although, he’s not so sure the men would listen as well out in the field. Then again, he still recalls the furtive glances around the table the first time he introduced you to the task force and you asked them to come over for dinner.

He still doesn’t know how you did it, but whatever magic you worked to keep things lowkey, casual, relaxed, and civil (not a single swear word or cuss to be heard the entire night) was impressive.

To be fair, you’re always enchanting to Kyle.

Most of the time, he’s the one initiating a veritable home concert. Or, rather, musical.

Yes, you read that right.

MUSICAL.

Johnny loves musical songs and you often catch him watching replays on YouTube of Hamilton, Phantom of the Opera, or some other show in the West End (Boys from the Blackstuff, anyone?). That being said, though, if he’s on leave, he’ll occasionally book a weekend in London for the two of you so he can drag you along to one of the many theatres. Of course, to repay the kindness, he takes you out for lunch if the show is in the early afternoon or a nice restaurant for dinner. 

Now, you tagging along is a given which wouldn’t need compensation whatsoever. Nevertheless, Johnny feels guilty about making the days down south about his passion and fun rather than yours. So the least he could do is treat you.

Though his company is already enough.

The shared moment, away from the battlefield, away from army life, seated in a theatre to immerse in a play, is enough.

Your man being Johnny McTavish rather than Soap is enough.
