Edith, #16 for the ask game
16. A childhood headcanon
Okay, this one is very specific.
When the Buffalo crew were children, some bright spark had the idea that they should put on an amateur version of The Pirates of Penzance. Maybe it was Mrs. McMichael, and in any event, Eunice insisted on playing Mabel.
But, in the way of late 19th century sheet music, the version they managed to get hold of didn't have all the smaller solos divided exactly as they were in the original production.
Which is how the final performance ended up with 9-year-old Edith scream-singing, more enthusiastically than skillfully, "...GO, YE HEROES, GO AND DIE!!!"
Eleanor was so proud, watching with Carter from the little chairs arranged on the lawn of some acquaintence's summer house.

Tagged by @karinta-agogobell-unified Thanks! :D
Currently Reading: Reading up on the lore/abilities of the chubby dragon I'm going to be playing as in a Demon Lord free-for-all at my next D&D game.
Last Song: The GaoGaiGar soundtrack. More specifically...
Currently Watching: The Rifftrax of an old, somewhat charming and VERY silly Japanese B-Movie about an alien invasion. At the moment, I am watching a teenage girl who has been inexplicably left behind on an alien space station by her friends and family, but who is holed up in a supply closet with the alien equivalent of a light machine gun and is mowing down bad guys by the dozen.
Current fic (I'm reading/invested AF): Reach for a World That's Been Forbidden From You.
Writing?: Yes. Working on both my RWBY/Kingdom Hearts crossover "Hunters of Light and Shadows", as well as an entry for Rosebird Week.
Next on my watch list: Nothing at the moment...
Current obsession: Analysis/theorizing on the latest Helluva Boss episode.

So I.... encountered someone on a Discord server I’m on who felt sorry for Adam because he was abused and enslaved as a kid, and that got me thinking about Cinder, and the somewhat horrifying thought that maybe Cinder fans and Adam fans aren’t so different after all. But honestly, I don’t know what to think....
Do you think there’s a meaningful difference between Cinder and Adam in that respect, in a narrative sense? Or are their stories and arcs similar enough to warrant that kind of comparison? Basically I just sorta want to know your thoughts on this matter in general. Feel free to ramble.
i think, in general, in a show like this where you end up with plenty of villains, there are bound to be similarities. however, those similarities don't necessarily mean that they're treated as parallels or as ways to connect those characters.
for example; with cinder, emerald and mercury trio, those similarities are important and main reason why cinder recruited and kept emerald and mercury around as her disciples. when cinder recruits adam, that connection has only become clear to the audience now; there was nothing to imply that it mattered to cinder, or that she would have even had a way to know they were similar in some way (being enslaved in atlas, etc.)
so, in narrative, i don't think any similarities they share are really meaningful as a way to predict how cinder's arc is going to go, because they haven't been meaningful in the past.
there's also huge difference in the amount of focus cinder and adam have gotten. cinder's basically a main character of her own right; she doesn't really play support to anyone else's story, and when we learned about her backstory, it was all about her.
in comparison, adam was... kind of just there? he appeared when the plot demanded, he didn't particularly get much focus that was only for his sake, and most of what we knew about him in the first 5 volumes was told by others.
and honestly, that's the main reason why i think most of the comparisons between cinder and adam fall flat; because when it comes to character's importance to the plot, there's no competition. to put it bluntly; cinder's the epitome of "show, don't tell" and the writers have clearly taken their time with her. adam was basically the opposite of "show, don't tell" until his very last moments.
additionally — and this is something i've mentioned before — adam had his place in the world with white fang, place where he belonged and could feel safe and accepted in. cinder hasn't had that, so already, their arcs have a one major difference that should not be overlooked.
that's about all i can think of now, and i hope it makes somewhat sense, because i was trying to stay as concise as possible and sometimes that ends up backfiring lol

OKABE RINTAROU from STEINS;GATE
Tumblr media
JUSTIFICATION:
"Okay, so hear me out. (I’ve only seen the anime so I might not have caught stuff from the VN, so don’t come after me lol) Okabe is a terminally nerdy otaku who spends too much time on message boards and has less-than-ideal social skills. This could very easily be the result of coping with repressed feelings of disliking “his” own masculinity; additionally, “he” adopts a “mad scientist” persona called Hououin Kyouma which could easily be a means of subconsciously rejecting the reality of Okabe Rintarou, while also overcompensating gender-wise. Second, “he” has a hard time bonding with other guys; Daru is basically “his” only male friend, and they’re fellow 2ch addicts. The rest of the central group around which Steins;Gate’s story revolves are women (yes, I’m counting Ruka, wait a second), and Okabe’s childhood best friend is Shiina Mayuri, the epitome of casual effortless femininity. This could be symptomatic of a lack of identification with manhood as a whole. Thirdly, and this is the key evidence, Okabe’s whole thing with Urushibara Ruka. Ruka is, essentially, a trans girl (she IS, I’m not taking comments on this) and Okabe repeatedly thinks about how unbelievably pretty and feminine she is, before compulsively reminding “himself” that Ruka is a “guy”. This can very easily be interpreted as Okabe denying to “himself” that transness is even possible, because if Ruka can be a girl, then it would mean that “he” would have to confront certain uncomfortable feelings deep inside of “himself”. Basically, I think Okabe is secretly jealous of Ruka. Lastly, just LOOK at Okabe. “He” clearly has little care for outward appearances and is frequently haggard and ungroomed — and this might very well be an indication of dislike of “his” own bodily form. In summation, I contend that Okabe can compellingly be read as a very repressed trans woman; transition might not save her from the storyline, but it would probably give her a lot healthier of an attitude towards herself and other people, and it would certainly fix the way she treats both Kurisu and Ruka." - @karinta-agogobell-unified

for the fic title thing: “Ostensibly Human”!
I'm torn between Vampire Edith AU where she decides the Sharpes are just TOO perfectly on-the-nose not to turn,
and, for some reason, my Coffee Shop Modern AU concept where sweet-looking nerdy barista Edith is secretly poisoning rude customers' drinks- not enough to kill them, probably; she's not a monster -and Lucille is the mysterious regular who notices.
(Also Edith started a betting pool on whether the Sharpes are siblings or partners. She's very put out that an unofficial jar another coworker made, simply marked "Team Lannister," is the one with the most money in it by far.)

What do you think of the crack theory that Raven, not Taiyang, is Ruby’s other parent?
Hehehe, I love it so much for so many reasons. Like, for one, it'd just be cool narratively. You could explain why Ruby seems to take so much after the Branwens while maintaining her and Yang's relationship as half-sisters. Definitely adds intrigue as to what Raven and Summer's dynamic was after she left. Not to mention what a statement it'd be to have a main protag that's the biological offspring of two badass ladies, no man required.
But, if I'm being honest, the real selling point for me is the comedic potential. Namely Tai and Summer bonding and getting together over shared experience of being left to raise Raven's kid. (The image of Tai opening his door to a pregnant Summer, going "You, too, huh?" and just rolling with it cracks me up every time). Then imagining how this reveal might go down (from Raven not even knowing she's the father and finding out Maury-style to her just kind of bringing that up casually to Ruby?). Endless digs/salt in the wound about Raven not only being a crap mother, but a crap father. The list goes on XD
Do I think it'll be canon? Probably not. But will I happily headcanon it for the rest of my time in this fanbase/lose my mind if it somehow turns out to be right? You bet I will!
