I did a random roll to pick a section of The Richmond Job for this and god it gave an angsty bit ... so ... sorry?

For Where the Hell is the Karma? I was going to have the press finding out full details of everything that happened to Jamie and him having to go on the record during the trial. But then I realised that 1) there wouldn't be a trial, like this is so clear cut a case and 2) it didn't really add anything to what Jamie is going through in this last chapter (which is going to be long enough as it is) so I cut it.

Here's a little Ch4 snippet:

I reblogged something else in the last post and bitched about cultural Christianity.

I'm still unpacking my own and have plenty of work to do about that myself. It's not that I don't understand how hard it is to do. But it's necessary if you truly want to actually switch religions/ world views/ etc.

So. Example time.

My own religion (now) has very little if anything to do with morality. My gods really genuinely do not care if I'm nice to people or any of the other qualifiers, qualities, or actions that most people/ Christianity would say makes A Good Person tm. I don't believe there is morality carved into the bedrock of the universe.

If the universe or """karma""" (the western understanding of karma is as appropriated as chakras and white sage) or the Fates or gods judged us for the harm we cause, why don't they judge and punish dolphins? Or any of the other copious animals in the wild who rape one another, or otherwise cause harm to each other?

Are we better than them somehow? Science says cephalopods can dream. Dolphins and whales have complex languages. Corvids can use tools and hold burials/ have funerary practices for their dead. Elephants share information with each other about which humans will help and which humans to avoid. You know damn well your pets have feelings.

Many magic practitioners who work with spirits have encountered the aware spirits of individual animals (including pets) that have passed. Sometimes they become familiars and other similar protectors. So you can't tell me the difference between humans and animals is that the latter don't have a "soul."

I put soul in quotes because I'm not quite sure any of us knows what that means. There are certainly multiple parts to the noncorporeal aspects of our being. The mind is one such part, and I've felt the chi body part when learning kung fu. I've experienced the weird slipping of the etheric double resulting from psychic attack that Dion Fortune explains in Psychic Self-Defense. Many different cultures have documented different parts of the soul or spirit or soul complex or whatever you want to call it. I'm not sure any of us have it all figured out. Maybe one day someone will explain it with science and measure it all.

Speaking of science, Biology 101 and 102 in college actually influenced part of how I see what happens after death. In your biochemistry, stuff breaks down and is reformed right? The sugars and the proteins and the carbohydrates get broken down and repurposed. Cell parts break down and get recycled. ♻️

And in evolution, there's no End Goal, right? That's one of the first myths they try to dispel. Evolution is adapting to circumstances, to the environment around the organism. It's not trying to obtain some sort of Ultimate Perfect Being.

So I think reincarnation and whatever we go through after death works the same way. I don't know all of it, for sure. But I think... I don't think growth is to Become Some Perfect Ideal. I think we just... adapt and change to fit the circumstances. Parts of us slough off on our journey and get recycled.

Maybe there's a core part underneath it all, but is that really the same person anymore? What are we without our memories and feelings?

I don't think it's about punishment or reward at all. I think it just exists. I think it just is. The rest of nature is that way. Why would the rest of the universe and reality be different? Especially in such a limiting way where it's all a front to divide the Righteous tm from the Wicked tm. Wtf is the point of that?

I think that's just too complicated for most people though. It took me a lot of unpacking and small changes one after another to get here. It's like that meme with the dominoes that's like Stephanie Meyer publishing Twilight leading to 50 Shades of Grey leading to shit, I forgot what it ended up being but it was absolutely bonkers.

Anyways.

The point is that completely different-than-Christianity worldviews and beliefs do actually exist. I'm sure a Jewish person, or idk a real Buddhist, or Hindu or Muslim or Sikh or Shinto person could maybe explain their religion as a far better example of just Vastly-Different-Worldview. but I couldn't explain any of those as well as someone who follows or studies them could. I only have my own experiences as someone raised in American cultural Christianity who is trying to move away from it and believe and be different.
