In other news, tonight Hallmark Channel reran what I’ve decided is one of my favorite of their movies, A Royal Runaway Romance (some possible spoilers hereafter).

One of the reasons I like it is because it doesn’t have that tired, formulaic trope of “partway through the second hour, one character, put in a tough situation, does something that hurts the other character or that the other character misinterprets in a hurtful way, and they refuse to talk to each other for most of the last half-hour until someone comes to their senses in the closing minute or two.” Those situations always feel so contrived, even forced, to me, particularly when the couple refuses to talk/explain/hear the other person out. Yeah, bad stuff happens, people make mistakes, couples have fights…but the not talking/not trying never seems realistic and always grates on me.

This movie instead goes with a more straightforward “your purpose here is to help me with X” and feelings develop along the way, but they’re both mature enough to understand that while they have these feelings, their purpose is X, not romance. So while there’s a bit of heartbreak, it’s not the kind that comes from betrayal (or “betrayal”) or the like, but more the kind where you know the cool person you hung out with (and liked) at summer camp is going back to their life, too, and you’ll never see them again (as one example of the type).

Another reason I really enjoy this movie is Philippa Northeast starring as Princess Amelia, who is lovely and kind and trying to find her way/place. (Ms Northeast looks a bit like Emilia Clarke and Lena LuthorKatie McGrath—perhaps exactly like if they had a daughter 😂—so there’s that. And that pink dress, wow 🤩 Kudos to the costume designer.) Her excitement for seeing America is both charming and contagious. (Plus, now I want s’mores!)

This is also one of those movies where I’d like to see a sequel. There’s the expected happy ending, but there’s so much room—perhaps deliberately so?—for more adventures before Amelia becomes queen. I’m not exactly sure how you’d work the “romance” angle without falling back on the tropes I find trite—I’d like to see them exploring and learning about each other similar to the the way they did in this film, but as a couple rather than two strangers. A romance adventure? Dunno. (They made romance-in-a-sequel work for a whole series of “Season in the Vineyard” films with Rachael Leigh Cook, but I’ve only ever seen the first one, so I don’t know how that worked.)

The other thing this rewatch reminded me (I can’t believe this movie came out in 2022—it was either the week before or the week after Katherine McNamara’s groundbreaking one [I thought I had a post about Kat’s movie, but I can’t find it under the expected tags, and we all know tumblr search is absolutely worthless])—is that, in spite of their ability to (sometimes) move beyond that contrived conflict, these Hallmark movies have yet to move beyond other formulaic elements: Amelia has a person-of-color “best friend” (assistant) and a really cool fun gay uncle. I’ve seen commercials for a winter/Christmas movie with two Black leads, and there was Kat’s aforementioned movie where she ends up with a woman (the way her sexuality was never defined, only explored, felt beautiful—like a vision of an ideal world—but I can’t help but wonder whether it was specifically downplayed)…they’re still (almost) all straight, white couples at the center. And while I adore many of the Hallmark leading ladies (“providing regular employment for actresses who portrayed Uncle Asad’s favorite bit-part broadcast-network characters since 2002” 😂) and enjoy many of the movies, they’re just not reflective of the world we live in…and so very far behind most of the rest of the networks out there. It makes me very sad.

future Kat and Philippa fluff

I couldn't sleep, so here's some Kat and Philippa slow burn co-parenting fluff. They're just friends, obviously...such friends.

Taking off her uniform jacket in the dark bedroom, Kat lingers, staring at the little body asleep in her bed. Lulu's not under the blankets, she always kicks them off. She's in a circle of them instead, curled on her side in a little nest, her dark hair spread out around her head. She's peaceful asleep, compared to the tiny ball of energy she is awake. Toddlers are powered by dilithium and spores at the same time.

Staring at her for another moment, Kat sighs and tiptoes out of the bedroom. She can read on the sofa until Philippa gets back from her security meeting.

Kat finishes her tea, and her book, and Philippa's still in the meeting.

Still.

Kat's sat through those kinds of meetings, the ones that won't end, no matter how much you think you've accomplished. There was a time when Philippa never would have had the patience for such a thoing. Where she'd threatened to murder someone, everyone, before it got this far.

Now it's well past oh-two-hundred and crawling into bed beside Lulu's starting to seem like a good idea.

Shifting the blankets carefully, Kat slides in, slowly. Lulu mutters words, syllables really, not words as Kat would define them, and she rolls to the side, giving Kat room to crawl in. Listening to her breathing, Kat's asleep before she even has the energy to wonder how late it is.

It's far later when Kat wakes. She sensed her, which means Philippa must have touched her hand or something because she can be entirely silent when she wants to be.

Lulu's curled into her chest now, arms splayed over Kat's. Why didn't that wake her? Lulu's a heat-seeking torpedo at night, curling into Kat's warmth even if she hates the blankets. Toddlers.

"Did you save the universe?" Kat asks, shutting her eyes.

She can hear Philippa's little smile. Years in the soft universe and she still does not apologize. It's nice how predictable she is. "We did, for now. I can take her--"

"Just go to sleep, Pippa," Kat mutters before it really occurs to her that the nickname was for the captain, not the woman standing in her bedroom.

"Here?"

Not that it hasn't happened before, or won't again. Lulu's a terror in the middle of the night if she's disturbed and yes, Philippa is gentle and strong enough that she can just carry her back, but Lulu's so wrapped into Kat right now that it seems like a terrible idea.

"The bed's huge."

Fabric rustles, and that must be Philippa getting undressed because she joins them a moment later, slipping under the other blanket. For a moment their feet touch, brushing against each other inthe dark. Kat can almost see Philippa's eyes around Lulu's head, dark like stars.

"Was she-?"

"She was a tiny terror, as usual." Kat winks over her head. "And a joy."

"Good." Philippa rolls to her back, eyes closing, and perhaps she'll be asleep in a moment, maybe she worries that work takes her so far from her little demon princess, or maybe she's grateful Lulu had a good evening. She won't say it aloud, never does, but Philippa's hand touches Kat's arm and that warmth courses through her.

"Goodnight," she whispers. "I love spending time with her, you know."

"I could tell from the toys all over the room."

"You're good at avoiding them."

"You spoil her."

"She's two," Kat whispers. "There's no such thing."

katrina x philippa +  62. “You’re not as quiet as you think you are.”

Georgiou walks past Admiral Cornwell’s quarters and hears a voice, maybe two. It’s a rare occurrence that the admiral had forgotten to turn off the privacy for her quarters considering how long she’s been on the ship for. 

Her curiosity gets the better of her because Georgiou has been wondering what her status will be in Starfleet’s Section 31 would be. After all those screenings and tests and sparring, she’s getting a little bored of waiting around on the ship. It’s very obvious the admiral can have a stake in her future. 

She presses her ear against the door, listening to Cornwell’s voice, especially piqued when she says Pippa. 

Georgiou raises her eyebrows. Pippa is quite affectionate. 

Suddenly, she stops speaking and the door slides open with the admiral standing in the doorway without her Starfleet jacket. Georgiou takes note of the modest muscles at her shoulders before dipping into her smooth lithe arms. 

“Admiral Cornwell, fancy that you’re awake,” Philippa says feigning courtesy. 

Katrina frowns. “What are you doing in my doorway exactly?”

“I heard you say my name,” Philippa casually responds, peaking into the room to see if anyone else is there. 

Katrina looks very displeased, putting her hands on her hips. “I wasn’t--”

Philippa smirks at the beginning of a flustered explanation. “You’re not as quiet as you think you are,” she immediately interrupts, full of double entendre. 

The admiral gets even more flustered, pinkness rising to her cheeks. Instead of bantering anymore with Philippa, she stares sternly at her. “Goodnight, Georgiou,” she emphasizes. 

The door to her quarters slide shut and Philippa stands there with a small smile to herself. Affection growing in her chest.

Katrina Cornwell/Philippa Georgiou?

Answered here and mentioned here, but I wrote you a ficlet. This plays off my Academy Trio™ scenario and takes place somewhere in the middle of their relationship, so they are in their 30s, around the rank of Lt. Commander. 

“Once upon a time–”

“Ugh.” Katrina makes a face over her glass. “I hate fairy tales.”

“You do not.” Philippa chuckles. It’s late and they are already a little tipsy.

“They’re unrealistic,” Kat complains. “There’s no such thing as happy ever after.”

“I didn’t say happy ever after. I said once upon a time.”

Kat purses her lips and restrains from rolling her eyes. There’s a – familiar – mystical tone to her friend’s voice and she never makes quibbling distinctions without cause. Bedtime story it is. She gestures with her glass for Philippa to continue, drains it before placing it on the table and inching closer to the the other woman on the sofa. As Kat curls into the – also familiar – curve of her body, Philippa positions her arm around her shoulders. She brushes a gentle hand through Katrina’s hair, and begins.  

“Once upon a time, there lived a princess. She was very beautiful but more importantly she was clever. Rulers and knights of every kingdom wanted to marry her but she fell in love with a dragon. It was hard on the princess. Dragons are very powerful but they are better known for destruction than affection.”

Philippa’s quiet voice fills the room. She comes from a long line of storytellers and likes to provide advice or support couched in narrative. Even her official reports often have a touch of whimsy.

“This one was loyal to the princess. He flew her all around the kingdoms and during the full moon he could turn into a handsome prince so they could make love. But he was still a dragon. A monster and hoarder whose heart would always belong to the sky.”

Kat scrunches her nose. She’s not sure she wants to hear this story.

“One day a wizard offered the princess a choice. Turn the dragon into the prince permanently, so they might marry and rule together, or turn her into a dragon, so she would forget her responsibility to the kingdom.”

She looks down to meet Kat’s eyes. “Which do you choose?”

“Are you asking me?” Philippa nods. Kat sits up. “I’m the princess?”

Philippa’s eyes twinkle. Annoyingly. “Which do you choose?”

“Why does it have to change?”

“Because it’s a fairy tale. Transformation is required.”

“I told you I don’t like fairy tales,” Kat harrumphs.

Philippa takes in her defensive posture, the red tinge in her cheeks, and leans in to curl a finger in her hair again. “It’s just a story, princess.”

Kat does not restrain herself from rolling her eyes this time. “Turn me into a dragon.”

“And give up the kingdom?”

“They can get another princess.” She’d rather be a dragon anyway. “Making the dragon a prince would diminish him.”

Philippa raises an eyebrow. “And making the princess a dragon wouldn’t diminish her?”

“You just said dragons are very powerful.”

“And I said the princess is clever,” she answers with a smile.

Katrina glares. She’s tired, a bit lightheaded, and she has no idea what she’s supposed to be getting out of this story.

“Fine.” She takes a breath. “The princess tells the wizard that she’s happy the way it is, and to transform the hearts of all the simple minded people in her kingdom so they will accept that the princess is perfectly capable of ruling alone.”

Philippa gives her an encouraging smile.

“And then she moves her dragon into the palace, with a …launch bay so he can fly off to do what dragons do.”

“Burn villages?”

“Only the bad ones.”

Philippa laughs. Katrina grins.

“And the wizard keeps her company when he’s gone. They all live happily ever after, the end.”

“Are you suggesting we brainwash the peasantry?”

“It’s just a story, wizard,” Kat answers in a sing song representation of Philippa’s earlier comment, and advances toward her on the sofa.

“What if–”

“Stop talking.”

Katrina’s logs are tomes that include in depth psychological evaluations, and Philippa’s have little excursions into side stories that seem to have nothing to do with anything but then it turns out to be an amazing insight, but Gabriel’s are like “stuff happened today, I made the right decision and looked good doing it”. You can tell when he and Kat are working together because his reports are ten pages longer and make sense. And hers sound frustrated

Tonight's middle of the night fic rabbit hole is unintended maternal Kat feelings.

A drabble, because word economy is a fun struggle.

The baby she never chose to want, or seek, curls into her chest. Her sweet dark hair echoes her mother's, and her tiny her flutters in sleep. She snuggles, warm and content. This is still instinctual rather than affection, but Kat already struggles to let her go.

Katrina Cornwell chose Starfleet. She tried to keep the universe steady. 

And died, alone.

Her unasked resurrection has none such solitude. Tilly brings dinner, and stays. Michael escapes from the bridge to kiss the baby's head, eat and laugh.

Philippa returns sweaty and glowing, unaware she's the most unexpected twist. 

"Kat, come eat."

         Summary:            

The last thing Philippa Georgiou remembers is a Klingon ship, gold and ornate. Katrina Cornwell was on the Enterprise, worn from war. Then they wake up in bed, together, with memories and feelings that aren't theirs.  Should they try to get home? Is this their home now?

Everyone lives, families are found, friends are sweet and enthusiastic and only slightly overprotective, and Kat and Philippa have a baby.

                 Notes:    

middle aged ladies who really didn't meet in canon being domestic and having babies (in space) is totally my fic happy place. I love Kat and Philippa, they could very easily love each other.

So they do.
