Aizawa prided himself on being good at solving mysteries. He had always loved them as a child, had devoured mystery novels and thrillers and police procedurals, trying to solve the mystery before the characters could. It was a trait that served him well as he made his way through UA, as he “solved” the mystery of how to get into the Hero Course (the Sports Festival method wasn't well advertised for a reason), as he ventured into the Pro Hero scene and made his name for cracking cold cases (it wasn't Aizawa's fault that people didn't pay attention to details; it was logical), and as he managed to catch the eye of the Rat God himself and was dragged back into the UA fold as a teacher and pseudo-mentee (Nedzu was terrifying, and Aizawa thanked whatever power was up there in the sky that Nedzu decided to mostly stay on the side of law and order).

So when Aizawa's mind latched onto Midoriya Izuku, prospective Limelight student and new Symbol of Peace if Aizawa were being entirely honest, Aizawa felt his detective instincts itch.

There was…something about Midoriya.

Neito knew how lucky he was to make it into UA without a recommendation. He wasn't stupid - he had a Copy Quirk. If he didn't have people with strong physical Quirks in his test center, if he wasn't able to figure out how the Quirk worked quickly enough, if it had bad enough side effects to adversely affect his performance; there were a lot of factors that fell just so so that he made it into Heroics when so many other people like him had to fight and scrape their way to the Sports Festival on the slim chance that they would impress and be asked to join.

But just being in the Heroics Course wasn't enough. Just having the benefit of training and conditioning and teachers to mentor him to become a Pro Hero like them wasn't enough. Neito couldn't simply sit by idly and allow the work he was doing in classes to dictate the pace of his upward trajectory any longer. It was time to take his progress into his own hands, which meant he had to get a meeting with The Architect.

Aizawa (not sensei yet, but well-versed in the aftereffects of winning the UA Sports Festival as a teenager and as someone with a highly desirable mental Quirk) had been a great help with this fact immediately, coaching him on how to vary his paths of getting home, how to double back and confuse a pursuer, how to recognize he was being followed, and Hitoshi had soaked it all in like a sponge. And it had been good for a while, had even been fun for a while employing all of Aizawa's tips and tricks especially when the man became his sensei.

His only complaint was that it added so much time to get home.

But then...Hitoshi started slacking off a bit. Just one less double-back, one less decoy route, one less false turn, one less look around him for pursuers. And eventually all those one lesses added up and suddenly Hitoshi was back to walking directly to and from UA.

He got complacent. And that was the beginning of his current predicament.

It was like everything had been building up to this moment - their entire lives, leading up to one final game together at the Olympics. Team Japan were titans of the game, led by Ushijima Wakatoshi and Kageyama Tobio with a supporting cast of Japan’s, and the world’s, new volleyball stars.

Bokuto Koutaro, Miya Atsumu, Hoshiumi Kourai, Hinata Shouyou - Team Japan was a veritable who’s who of the volleyball world.

The fact that so many of them had been playing with and against each other for years, from middle school to high school to professional leagues and beyond, just made this even more of a fairytale moment. And yet…

Hajime’s hands clenched on his clipboard. Something wasn’t right - something was missing. And even as much as his high school self might have wished it, it wasn’t that he wasn’t out on the court.

As much as Hajime had loved volleyball, still loved volleyball (he would have to if he was willing to work with this group of absolute basketcases), he knew why something was wrong.

This was not good. This was not good, was very, very bad as a matter of fact, and there was absolutely nothing Darcy could do about it.

She had been careful, so so careful, to not do anything that would bring attention to her. Well, not the bad type of attention, at least. And it had actually been really easy to fly under the radar because it wasn’t like she was even all that powerful or dangerous or anything.

It was a minor Luck mutation, just enough juice in the X gene to skew things one way or the other but not enough to materially affect outcomes either way. Darcy’s mutation affected luck purely - it didn’t care whether it granted her good luck or bad luck.

Luck was luck, to Darcy’s mutation. And it seemed like hers had finally run out.

Catch up to the Hero Course kids: catch up with their academics and add Heroics and Ethics, catch up with their conditioning and their training and learn a weapon because he didn't have a physical Quirk, catch up with their Quirk training that he had never had a chance to do.

He was exhausted twice over at the end of every session he had with Present Mic to hone control of his Quick. And he didn't have to ask how he was doing - he knew. He knew each time his head pounded and his vision blurred and he struggled not to vomit on the Pro Hero's shiny leather boots.

He wasn't catching up quickly enough.
