Keiko: "I wrote whoreraddish instead of horseraddish."
Hao: "Oh, no, that's something different."
Yoh: "No one wants that."
Mikihisa: "It would explain the spiciness, though."

I think if I said who my favorite characters in media were, it wouldn't surprise anyone here. Instead it'd be like that explains so fucking much while saying nothing. So fuck it.
A list of favorite characters from every hyper fixation I've ever had.
YuYu Hakusho (I would recommend both the manga and anime bpth are very good times.)
Yusuke Urameshi Keiko Yukimura Kazuma Kuwabara (I love Kuwabara he's great- He's amazing good guy.).
Since we're on Yoshiro Togashi's work anyway-
Hunter x Hunter
Killua Zoldyck Leorio Paladiknight Knuckle Bine
Detective Conan
Shinichi Kudo (I too am irresponsible and full of hubris I would have followed that criminal too at his age.) Ran Mori Heiji Hattori
Shaman King
Yoh Hao Asakura
It's equal but I lean more favorably towards Yoh. Favorite Yu-gi-oh series and protagonist
Yu-Gi-Oh GX
Judai Yuki (I don't think this says anything. I'm just correct, actually.)
Bleach
Orihime Inoue (Always forever sweet lady amazing girl.) Captain Unohana Oldman Yamamoto Toshiro Hitsugaya Kenpachi and Ichigo (I like them both to about the same degree.)
Naruto
Naruto Hinata Neji Shikamaru Sakura Ino Tamari
Oh, wait Akamaru. Yep that's every- oh and Shino! Wait and Choji. Probably Tamari's entire team, too, and can't forget Neji. In fact there we go he's up where he belongs. Naruto has a huge fucking cast. Most of them are interesting chaaracters. Bleach has a fucking huge cast as well.
Code Geass
Lelouch Euphemia Suzaku Akito from Akito the exiled (this is also correct).
Boruto
I'm committed to what I like-
Boruto Shikadai Chocho (this is just correct too actually I don't look in this fandom so fuck it I make this rule now) Himawari Inojin.
One Punch Man
Garo (I said he could beat Saitama in the manga and my nephews made fun of me because he's never won anywhere else. But that shit was a fight in the manga instead of a one hit out.) Metal Bat (I have a character type leave me alone. Yes, I recognize having Kuwabara, Knuckle Brine, and then him here sets a pattern. But I'd argue it's a good one.)
Chainsaw Man
Denji Makima Nayuta Kobeni Asa
Pandora Hearts
Oswald Gilbert Oz Elliot Marie Ada Sharron Lily
Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning (Spiral Suri no Kizuna)(read this in middle school sooo this is going off memory.)
Ayumu Narumi Hizumi Mizushiro
Nabari No Ou (read this in middle school sooo this is going off memory.)
Tobari Kazuhiko Miharu Yoite Kouichi
Kagerou Days
Shintaro Ayano Seto Konoha Hibiya
Kingdom Hearts
Terra Roxas Axel (Lea) Xion Vanitas Ventus Xemnas (Look my first game was days and he was a decent boss). Larxene Sora
Oshi No Ko
Aqua Hoshino Akane Kurokawa Taiki Himekawa Kana Arima Frill Shiranui Shun Yoshizumi
Batman comics and animated series
Harley Quinn (since batman the animated series) Damian Wayne (since Son of Batman movie) Bruce Wayne (Yes, Bruce is below his son. I'm not sorry.) Poison Ivy (since Batman the animated series.).
Spider-man
Peter Parker Mile's Morales (from the films).
Calvin and Hobbes
It was the first thing I enjoyed reading. I don't think I have to explain this but I liked everyone that appeared frequently in this.
Deadpool (mostly due to the Spider-man team up comics and the movies.)
W.I.T.C.H
Irma Hay Lin Will Taranee Cornelia Elyon
Totally Spies
Alex Clover Sam
Martin Mystery (A show nobody knows)
Martin
Invader Zim
Dib Gaz Tak
Gravity Falls
Dipper Pines Pacifica Mabel Stanley
I was typing this up during that whole other thing people may have seen. I don't know what this list can tell anyone about me. It is funny to go over for me personally because a lot of the characterization stuff I like from Milgram can be found in most of these series. Which is proably why I have trouble actually picking favorites in regards to Milgram since all of the characters have traits I enjoy.
But yeah that's a little bit about me I guess. I do enjoy a lot of the characterization I see in Milgram. This is much more casual and generally being written up to give some idea of my likes. Though most of these are good watches, reads, or plays. Most are pretty well known but I would recommend Spiral since it's not that talked about in general.
Well, that's it.

Fandom: Shaman King
Characters: Keiko, Hao, Yoh
Word Count: 918
Summary: Hao’s temper tantrums include fire (AU)
Taking the twins shopping is a careful juggling act because Hao has no problems trying to wander the store by himself and grabbing anything that interests him. Yoh on the other hand is more then content to get distracted by one thing and just stand there staring at it.
They also refuse to sit contently in the cart or stroller as she pushes them around as Hao insists on walking everywhere and Yoh always wants to do what his twin is doing.
Mikihisa had suggested getting leashes and Keiko had quickly shot that one down. She knows Hao won't like it, and while Hao can't remember anything of the lives he's lived, he still has control of fire. Keiko isn't sure if he still has his reishi. She is always careful to mind her thoughts, but she suspectes his reishi if he was born with it has long since quieted.
If Hao doesn't like the leash then Keiko is sure it will find a way to catch on fire and she doesn't want Hao getting burned in the process. She doesn't know if his fire can harm him, but she doesn't want to chance it and she doesn't want to risk Yoh or herself getting hurt either.
“Hao,” Keiko says when he toddles up with a stuffed cat in his hands.
“Want,” he responds back, holding it up.
Yoh turns his head and his eyes widen taking in the toy Hao has and his lack of his own. Hao shoves a plush dog into Yoh's hands before he can start crying and stares at Keiko as if to say see.
“You just got a toy yesterday,” Keiko responds taking it out of his hands.
Hao gives her the meanest look he's capable of at age three and then gestures a hand at Yoh who's already clutching the toy to his chest for dear life afraid she's going to take it away too.
“No,” Keiko reiterates because she has to be firm. She has to set clear rules and follow through. She cannot allow Hao to walk over her or use Yoh to his advantage to manipulate her. She's the parent her.
Yoh sniffles as she pulls the stuff dog out of his hands and whispers a sad bye-bye. Hao on the other hand doesn't want to take this one laying down, and maybe if Keiko had paid better attention she would have seen what was coming. She would have noticed how the stuffed cat Hao had found looked surprisingly like another cat.
“Want cat,” Hao tries again holding his hand out.
“No,” Keiko answers setting it up on the shelf well out of his reach.
“One,” Hao starts to count and that immediately ends the last of Yoh's sniffles as his eyes go wide.
“Two,” Hao says, and that's when Keiko realizes he's imitating her count of three to stop misbehaving.
“Three,” Hao finishes, and Keiko has the wherewithal to pick Yoh up at that moment.
“Want it!” Hao screams, dropping to the ground kicking his arms and legs and starting up a full blown tantrum.
Yoh clings to her and she can see the way he's unsure if he should cry, scream, or fight to get down and hug Hao.
“I'm sorry, Hao, but you can't have it,” Keiko sighs, placing Yoh in the cart and buckling him in.
Small fires start to pop off in the aisle and Keiko's eyes blow wide. This hasn't happened before. This is a new development and a nightmare.
She picks Hao up who is still kicking and screaming as the fire alarms start to go off and the sprinklers activate in the store.
“Now we can't buy anything we have to leave,” Keiko states even though she knows Hao can't control it, but she's hoping maybe she can convince him not to reach the level of mad that triggers his fire like this again.
Hao's still screaming as she holds him under one arm and pushes the cart with Yoh with her other hand towards the nearest exit. The fire isn't spreading and there is no danger, but Keiko would rather be anywhere but here right now.
She doesn't see the way that Yoh's fingers reach out and manage to snag the plush dog she didn't put far enough away. It's not until she's out of the store, that she sets Hao down with a stern look and lifts Yoh out of the cart. Hao's face is still red but he's stopped his temper tantrum for the most part.
She takes both of their hands and leads them back towards the car. It's not until after she's buckled them in and gets in the driver seat that she sees through the rear view mirror Yoh handing Hao the dog plush.
“Better?” Yoh asks.
Hao shoves it back at him, “Want cat.”
Yoh thinks about it for a moment before trying it again.
“Cat!” Yoh declares proudly.
“Dog,” Hao corrects.
“Name cat,” Yoh insists still trying to give the plush to Hao.
Hao finally relents if only to make Yoh stop trying to shove it into his face. At some point that day Hao will find a way to give it back to Yoh. Yoh won't care anymore the events of the day gone from his immediate memory. She'll find Yoh the next morning with the dog plush cradled to his chest while he sleeps.

Part II!
285 Marlin (Magical Princess)
An English witch. During the war, she served the Prime Minister using Beelzebub, the spirit of flies, and used insects from around the world to collect information that was difficult to obtain even for the secret services. She saved her country several times this way. Today, however, no one has much need for her and she has fallen from grace, barely being able to make a living as a street keeper. By Comparing the teachings handed down orally by her ancestors with the documents preserved in the British Museum, Marlin is convinced of the existence of the Shaman Fight and, seeing it as an opportunity for a new life, dusts off her techniques.
286 Samansa (Magical Princess)
She's an American witch who's spirit ally is Asmodeus, a slug. Foreseeing the future through tarot cards, she was a consultant to the wives of Presidents, but retired after she got married. As we age, we get less and less conventionally attractive, so she starts searching for the secret of eternal youth. It has been passed down orally in her family for generations, and she reaches the conclusion that the key to it lies in the Shaman Fight. "Eternal youth" is actually Hao's reincarnation technique, but she never realizes this. She finds herself fighting against Hanagumi. Her late husband was the director of an advertising agency, and she participates in the Shaman Fight against the wishes of her daughter and grandchildren.
287 Lil Red (Magical Princess)
She is a French witch. During the war, under the code-name "Little Red Riding Hood", she acted as a spy in the shadows with help from her wolf-shaped staff and Tara, a spider spirit. She provided information to the resistance, and thus contributed to the liberation of France. Apparently, she still coordinates French spies. She is the only single woman of her team, but hasn't given up on love, so she participates in the Shaman Fight hoping to regain her youth. She met Marlin and Samansa during a conference in Morocco at the time of World War II, and they have since been friends. She is also the oldest of the three.
288 Marlin, 289 Samansa, 290 Lil Red
Young Magical Princess (As young girls)
The Magical Princesses in their best years. They are ruthless in their old age and are descendants of three witches that aided Hao during the previous Shaman Fight. Their ancestors loved Hao, but were abandoned. Each of them married and formed families. Because of the era of fierce and ruthless witch hunts, they stopped their work and simply pass on spells useful in everyday life orally.
291 Anahol Pokki (Younger brother)
Self-proclaimed descendant of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs, Anatel said that his younger brother Anahol is more devoted to the Universe. He is present at the Shaman Fight to cheer for the Niles, but finds himself a witness to his older brother's death. Turned avenger, he attack Jeanne and her companions. While investigating the X-LAWS, Hao takes notice of him and welcomes him to his group, even introducing him to the Cho Senji Ryakketsu. Perhaps because he is a genius, or perhaps because he is thirsty for revenge, Anahol quickly assimilates the fundamentals of the book. Meanwhile, the 10 000 spirit slaves that were allied with his beloved older brother commune with the gods of Egypt within the Great Spirit. He now lives a life of Nirvana, calm and entirely without rancor. Anahol's face is identical to his brother's, except his nose is three centimeters shorter.
292 Amneris
She's a nature spirit that used to be an Egyptian princess. She took the form of a cat, which were considered sacred animals in those times. Perhaps because she was a princess, she speaks to Anahol with poisonous words; she is a selfish, arrogant, and ruthless spirit. She is very good at shape-shifting aside from her cat appearance, such as her Sphinx form (when attacking Jeanne), or the goddess Bastet.
293 Mikihisa Maki (At 25 years old)
Mickey in hippy style, who dreams of the sixties, when he met Keiko in Funbarigaoka in 1983. Wanting to become like John Lennon, he leads a life of hardship. Compared to the mature and adult Keiko, Mickey lives a late adolescence, yet manages to impress her. Obviously, Mickey is an individual whom the important Asakura family frowns on, but with his innate talent and thanks to the advice of a mysterious cat spirit, he overcomes Yohmei's traps one after another. He is welcomed into the family and changes his surname. His band was called "Deer Flying". And in the lazy adolescence of the father you see the roots of Yoh.
294 Keiko Asakura (At 23 years old)
Strictly educated as a child to become a shaman, she rebels against the Asakura family and goes to Tokyo, where she finds a job as a clerk in a company that turns out to be tied to her family. Having grown up in the countryside, she cannot get used to the frenetic metropolitan life altogether. She knows a boy, but he is uncomfortable because of her shamanic powers and leaves her. After a while Keiko meets Mikihisa, a boy who does not want to grow up, and who falls madly in love with her. Thanks to her unexpected strength of will and her practical sense, Keiko manages to make sure that Mikihisa is welcomed into her family. Equipped with very strong powers, her personal spirit is the god Tamenojikara-O.
Notes:
-Marlin’s job translates as “street guess”, which seems to be a street keeper.
-The Young Magical Princess file seeeeems to only be referring to their ancestors? Like, everything after the first two lines seems to be about the past-Hao witches(since Lil Red’s file says she’s always been single). It’s kinda unclear.
-The “Obviously, Mickey is an individual whom the important Asakura family frowns on,..” line translates with a “not” before the “an individual”, which I removed, as it seems to contradict itself. I could totally see Yohmei finding Ryu on the doorstep and thinking “Gods, not this shit again”. :P
- Tamenojikara-O doesn’t seem to be any deity I can find. It sounds like an actual one, but google only find Naruto pages for it. Likely a slight translation error when it was put into Italian from Japanese. If anyone has any answers or ideas, I’m all ears!
-And that’s it! I love the KZB Shaman Files and wish more were translated. I love the lore, world building, and just kind of everyday trivia that they add to the story and it’s characters, especially the super side ones (like the Magical Princesses!). This is the only Star Comics volume I own, and I got it because I was super curious about what the Magical Princess and 2nd Hanagumi files told. I wasn’t disappointed!

Hey can you doing of one Hao development in interest in one of Yoh friends. She doesn’t look strong or useful but she have a unusual ability that let her understand and communicate with spirit that can’t normally talk like Spirt of Fire and she can have full conversation with them.
Hey, No problem sorry for the late reply as I had to think up character parameters as to not have the reader come across as a Mary-Sue, To this end I have imposed the rule that the reader is a shaman in training and she is training at the Asakura compound, she is to be trained as a shrine maiden by Yoh and Hao’s mother, They can talk to spirits like Spirit of fire but it takes it out of her as shes new to it also I have left it open ended if you want a chosen ending hit me up again Anyway with them parameters here goes nothing and if anything isn’t to your specification drop me an inbox or another ask and I will alter my answer to your liking.

Shaman king: Kindred soul
(Reader, Hao scenario)
You had lived at the Asakura compound most of your life since your family were annexed by the Asakura clan due to the dwindling supporters of your family; it started 100 years ago as a temporary measure but as time your family and the Asakuras began to help each other as family.
One of your family traits as shamans was the innate ability to speak with seirei class spirits, This trait as itself becoming a bygone power as most or your family ether didn’t bother to train the skill or simply lacked the right amount of furyoku to do so< you fell into the latter category as you trained this skill as an understudy to Keiko Asakura, Your skills were improving but it would take time like everything else.
One day you received notification from your tutor that your training would be temporarily be put on hold and you were guided down to the lower levels of the compound with Anna, It was there you were told about the Asakura families dark past, Of Hao Asakura the man who would destroy the world to remake it in his image, As you listened you understood why you were privy to this information as certain aspects of your powers sounded similar to his.
Within no time you were aboard a helicopter to Patch village with Anna and the group in hopes of derailing the fire users plans for this world, During the ride over to Patch village you wondered what kind of spirits could you talk to when you arrived, this was a thought that ended when the helicopter stopped on the ground and you disembarked.
In no time Anna was questioning Hao as to the location of Yoh, An altercation ending in Hao receiving the legendary left handed slap, During this you talked with the spirit of fire who simply shrugged you off with answers that they only communicated with their master, When all was done and you were heading off with Anna and the gang you felt the intense stare, You had done it, Hao’s interest was peeked.
Tumblr media
Encounter 2: watchful scarlet gaze
A day had passed since you arrived at Patch village and you were sightseeing with Anna, Since the other day you felt the watchful eye of unknown intent upon you, You walked with Anna as she made plans for Yoh’s next round of training, Within no time you both had separated from each others company.
You tried to regain contact with Anna as you searched though the crowd, That’s when you heard a voice you would soon know to remember, You stopped walking in your tracks and turned round to face him.
“Well, Well you are a perceptive one aren’t you?” Hao mockingly spoke to you as you looked at him preparing to ether run or fight as he put his hand out to talk you down from any action you were about to do.
“Now that’s not very friendly and just when my dear friend talked of your kindness” He retorted as he referred to the crimson spirit by his side, You relaxed your stance albeit not much.
“What do you want from me?” you demanded to know making Hao laugh at you’re your trembling stance whilst he crossed his arms and leaned against the nearby wall.
“Nothing much you just intrigue me, Not many shaman can talk to him, You should feel privileged” Hao mused as he played with a strand of his long hair whilst looking you up and down.
“So what, You want to form a club with me” You sarcastically said to the long haired shaman in front of you, And with a quick response you felt a burn on your cheek as he looked at you with stern eyes.
“Watch your tone, Even though I told you I find you interesting doesn’t ascertain that I see us as equals, Even without this power id outclass you in a breath, I Just came to tell you make sure you pick the right side as it would be a shame if I had to dispose of a useful shaman” He coldly spoke out looking deep into your eyes almost speaking to your soul, And with that he made his exit leaving you standing there dumbstruck.
Soon side would need to be picked and to which will you choose?

One of the things we were shown quite often in Shaman King was the loneliness Yoh felt throughout his life. Not only when Anna mentioned it and other characters commented, it's especially in the flashbacks where they showed us how Yoh got into trouble with his classmates, his refuge in the subway ghost girl, or his attachment to Matamune for wanting so much... a friend and then lose it so soon.
It always made me very sad, and I always thought I wish Mikihisa and Keiko had given Yoh a little brother or sister. Can you imagine Yoh in the big brother role, having a boy or a girl around him? (let's say about 5 years younger than him) running super energetic around him and demanding to play and get away from grandpa's training? How would Yoh's family life have changed if they had added a younger brother or sister to his life? I don't know, but I like to think that Yoh would have had a happier childhood had he had a younger brother or sister in his life since his twin wasn't with him. And I think Yoh would have made a lovely big brother.
oooh that is very intriguing concept!

Shaman King - Name Games
I didn’t really intend to expand this accidental series of Bleach posts outside one series, but I was looking back at Shaman King, what with the new anime having been announced, and to be honest there’s not a lot to pick at in this particular regard --a lot of the names are pretty straight forward, or just not Japanese, and the O.S. are all similarly named, predominantly in English or with pretty straight forward Japanese epithets.
Like, for example Amidamaru’s name is just written as Amida[阿弥陀] as in the Japanese name for the Buddha, Amitabha, and -maru[丸] super common super generic suffix for boys’ names.  All his attack names are accordingly Buddha themed.  There’s no real obscure or obtuse kind of references or anything that isn’t really self explanatory.  It does tie into Yoh’s general attitude and personal philosophies being zen influenced, which I guess takes a bit of a leap if you’re not familiar, but again it’s pretty obvious.
Then his Over Soul names are all things like:
阿弥陀丸 = “Amidamaru”
スピリット・オブ・ソード = “SUPIRITTO OBU SOODO” = “Spirit of Sword”
...白鵠 = “...Byakko ” = 白:“White,” 鵠:”Swan”
Really straight forward.  English readers really weren’t missing much.  Or at least if they were reading Mankin Triad’s scanlations. (I’ll be honest, I never read all the Viz prints front to back.)
But you know what are some fun kanji readings that TOTALLY get missed in English?  The actual names of the main character.  And granted, a lot of characters in the series aren’t Japanese so they don’t all get fun clever names, but the Asakura family is like one big running joke...
So, in-world, the family itself starts in Japan in the 900s with an orphan child named  Asaha(麻葉) Douji(童子) whose names read as “Hemp”+”Leaf” and “Child(implicitly a boy)” but also an archaic reading meaning “Scholar" or depending on context “Sorcerer.“
Tumblr media
For a little context, despite Japan having rather notorious modern marijuana policing, hemp was actually a widespread and integral crop in Japan for hundreds of years so it’s not an uncommon component of names in the first place.  It’s also the basis of a very common pattern in traditional Japanese fabric printing (and you’d probably seen it before in period settings in anime, manga, J-dramas, or film) it’s called Asanoha(麻の葉) and you’ll notice is the exact same kanji as the name Asaha.
The boy, Asaha, grows up to be a powerful onmyoji and changes his name to  Asakura(麻倉) Hao(葉王) meaning “Hemp“+”Storehouse/Warehouse/Treasury“ and “Leaf“+”King.”  Considering the name “leaf” clearly refers back to the family name’s, “hemp” I really hate to admit it, but Hao’s name is basically “Weed Lord” of the family “Weed Stash.“  If it wasn’t clear this is also why Takei draws a lot of cannabis leaves in association with Yoh(葉) whose name is just written with the same kanji as Hao’s for “Leaf” but with an alternate reading.

Yoh’s super chill and laid back personality and his ever present headphones for relaxing to are all part of this theme in his name.  This theme is also why he’s a fan of Soul Bob (aka totally-not-just-Bob-Marley) and why Soul Bob posters are everywhere in the background of Shaman King.  The Asakura family crest, adapted from the Onmyodo five-path star, also resembles a leaf not unintentionally --I don’t remember if they openly refer to that fact in-world or not.
But as we follow the rest of the family tree from there we get the ancestor Yohken(葉賢) from 500 years ago, Yoh’s grandparents Yohmei(葉明) and Kino(木乃), his mother Keiko(茎子) and father Mikihisa(幹久), and eventually his son Hana(花).  Also the branch family’s Yohkyo(葉虚), and his kids Ruka(路菓) and Yohane(葉羽).  And you’ll probably already notice a lot of those names use the same Yoh/Ha(葉) that is the basis of both Yoh and Hao’s names.
So the rest of the family’s names go...
Tumblr media
Yohken(葉賢) = “Leaf”+”Wisdom” which, at face value, is just naming him as a wise shaman.  But it’s also basically a cheeky euphemism for “stoner logic.”
Yohmei(葉明) = “Leaf”+”Insight” synonymous with Yohken’s reading.
Kino(木乃) = “Tree”+”From/<posessive indicator>,” so “Hemp Tree” basically
Keiko(茎子) = “Stalk/Stem”+”Child” but keeping in mind that -ko(子) is just a super common suffix for girls’ names, so it’s not like she’s being called explicitly child-like or anything, her name is basically just “Stem Girl”
Mikihisa(幹久) = “Stem”+”Longtime” but I’ll come back to him...
Hana(花) = “Flower” but also a phonetic play on ha(葉) + na(ナ) from his parents’ names
Tumblr media
Yohkyo(葉虚) = “Leaf”+”Void/Empty” (haha that’s the same “Hollow” used for Hollows in Bleach)  As the head of the disgraced branch family of the Asakura house, his name reflects that he’s not part of the family, despite the family surname, by basically just calling him “No Leaf.”  Technically it could also read “Fruitless Leaf” which kinda sticks to the plant imagery better, but makes a little less sense when he has kids...
Ruka(路菓) = “Way/Path/Road” + “Fruit” I assume this is meant as “Way of Fruit” like a metaphor for the fact that she’s been tasked with leading the branch family to success, and not “Road Fruit” as in fruit you’d find on the road, or by the side of the road.  Although that does kind of fit in its own way.
Yohane(葉羽) = “Leaf“ + “Feather“ which I think is a play on the fact that when traced back to Jodai era(700s CE) etymology both words shared a common root word, reflecting the fact that he’s got the same ancestor as the core family, but has developed differently but in parallel.
Tumblr media
So I said I’d come back to Yoh’s dad, Mikihisa, because as an outsider who married into the Asakura family he has an original family name other than Asakura.  His full name is Miki(真木) Mikihisa(幹久) which read as “Truth“+”Tree” and “Trunk/Stem“+”Long Time“ which has some nuance to it.  Obviously “Long Time Trunk” and “Tree (of) Truth“ evoke the image of an old and venerable tree with a thick and many ringed trunk.  That image plays into Miki’s role as a Shugenja --there is a whole lot going on with the history of the religion, more than I can reasonably summarize, but the thing to know here is that the popular image of Shugenja in media leans into them being ascetic monks, living in the wilderness, generally forest mountains, with an association with Tengu.(Tengu are frequently dressed in Shugendo attire.)
So, the forest man is named after a big tree, pretty straight forward...  The clever bit here is how once he takes the Asakura name his name can be read to match his wife’s, as the (幹) in Mikihisa and (茎) in Keiko can both read as “Stem.”
Unrelated to anything, but it’s always super weird to me that English translators insist on calling him “Mickey” (they did the same with Kaoru Miki in Revolutionary Girl Utena....)
Tumblr media
And while I’m talking about outsiders, I’ll bring in Anna as well.  Her given name is actually just written in katakana as An’na(アンナ) so, unlike Mikihisa, her name in English is untouched.  But her family name Kyoyama (恐山) is written “Fear/Dread/Awe“+”Mountain“ which is both a description of her character as an imposing figure in Yoh’s teen life, but also a reference to Mt.Osore(恐山) where she first meets Yoh, which is both home to a famous Buddhist temple and a mythological location of the gate to the underworld.  It is of course written with the same kanji as her family name but pronounced differently, as you can see.
Tumblr media
The American, Alumi(アルミ) Numbirch(ニウムバーチ) is obviously named after Aluminum, as all the Patch are named after metals.  I’m not really sure why the “-birch” part is in there?  It might be an obtuse play on the fact that the Japanese White Birch is also called the Siberian Silver Birch, and her dad is Silva?  It feels like a bit of a stretch, but I can’t think of another way “birch” would be relevant to her name.  But otherwise she’s not really related to the family theme.
Tumblr media
And not at all related to the Asakura’s, but beautiful androgynous British boy detective, Lyserg Diethel is named after the hallucinogenic compound Lysergic acid diethylamide. (aka LSD/Acid)   The drug themes is part of why his spirit is named Morphine.  She is a nature spirit of (of course) a poppy flower.  The other reason she’s named Morphine is because Sherlock Holmes --from whom Lyserg gets his inverness cape aesthetic-- infamously used recreational morphine (and cocaine) to alleviate himself of the lethargy of being without a case to solve.
