SV Star Wars AU where Shen Yuan transmigrates into a proxy for Padme.

I know the Obikin vibes are really strong with Bingqiu, but hear me out:

Shen Qingqiu is the fourteen-year-old(?!?!) King Elect (?!?!?!) of Qing Jing, a planet from the Cang Qiong sector that has been facing issues with the Trade Federation and has petitioned the Jedi Order for help.

"Shen Qingqiu" is also a role played by several similar-looking fourteen-year-old boys, except where Padme and her handmaids were all from more or less the same background, most of the servants conscripted for the Shen Qingqiu role are downtrodden slaves basically cast as expendable bodyguards, whose main advantage in this deal is that after Shen Qingqiu finishes his term as King then they get to go free.

Meaning, Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu are both expendable body doubles for the "real" Shen Qingqiu (in this case, Qiu Jianluo going by his royal name, with the "qiu" being deliberate rather than accidental).

Additional fun possibility: Qiu Jianluo has actually been dead since the trouble with the Trade Federation first escalated, and Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu have basically been Weekend At Bernie's-ing him because there's no time to elect a new king and if the Trade Federation's blockade isn't broken, everyone's immediate prospects are extremely bleak (and the odds of the Shens being sent to some prison camp instead of granted their freedom is very high).

Another additional fun possibility: the Trade Federation didn't actually kill Qiu Jianluo, Shen Jiu did, so not only do they have to maintain the charade, they also have to look for opportunities to drop Qiu Jianluo's corpse down a reactor core or something and make it look like he's died during the conflict in order to prevent any investigations that will look into pesky things like "time of death" or "how many stab wounds there are".

In the midst of all this, of course, there is the main plot of PIDW/SW, wherein Shen Qingqiu was originally one of several antagonists to excessively bully and dismay Jedi prodigy and future Chosen One Luo Binghe, a poor slave boy living on an ice planet and trying to win enough money via dangerous pod races to buy medicine for his dying mother. Featuring also young Jedi knights Liu Qingge and Yue Qi (the latter of whom seems to have some history with Shen Jiu...?), admittedly kickass Sith apprentice Mobei Jun, a certain future Chancellor from the Huan Hua sector, and sentient Sith holocron Meng Mo. And Airplane, probably as an up-and-coming member of the Jedi AgriCorps who basically has Count Dooku's plot duties (turn traitor and get killed) but is somehow also thoroughly entangled with Mobei Jun.

look at that face. that hardened stare of the woman doling out orders and basically running the whole village by proxy and probably totally a kickass swordswoman.

then there's this kiddo that came with them to the village as a refugee-war-orphan. TELL me this woman doesn't try to avoid them entirely and treat them like any other adult (he's not an adult he's a child!) under her command and accidentally adopts them in the process. AND THEN! A N O T H E R ONE FALLS FROM THE SKY!

she gives them a task designed to fail, her commander is suspicious as anything about this kid, but she gives them new clothes (because WHAT are they WEARING!?) and the little thing comes back not just victorious but also it turns out they had immediately packbonded with her Totally-Not-Kid. so uh... whoops there's two of them now. she never expected to be a parent! how does she even handle that! what does she say!?

"Your orders are not to die" yeah that totally works. she's nailed it.

Starmora is still canon, stop sinking your own ship

I'm not sure why people are mad or sad about the way Gunn "ended" the Starmora relationship? It's not over, it just went through a natural resting point after all of the stuff that happened in the plot???

Because even if the characters don't share a screen anymore, that doesn't mean it's over. That doesn't mean that love can't happen twice. Gunn has laid the groundwork - you can see it if you're looking at the characters.

Gamora has always been subtle. but she commits. She puts her whole traumatized heart into something if she believes that it's the right thing. She was raised by Freaking Thanos - she was (kinda) fine with him killing half the population but when Ronan wanted All of Xandar killed she Bolted. Betrayed Ronan and by proxy Thanos and Nebula.

After Endgame, she knows how to reach the Guardians if she wanted to. Heck, she's been talking with Nebula who respects that enough to only bring her on a mission that could kill a Guardian and end their found family.

About 75% of Gamora's lines are her denying that she's the same person. She's clearly pissed as hell that Peter is trying to "bring her back" when it's clear to her that she's fine without the Guardians.

At the end of the movie, if she wanted to be on the same team as Peter, she would have stayed on Knowhere. If she never wanted to see Peter again, she wouldn't have said anything.

By saying "I bet we were fun" its a signal to both Peter AND the audience that she is fine to stay in contact. That she acknowledges that her love with Peter could happen again.

As for Peter...

Peter loves HARD. He's never been subtle about it. He's never been subtle about feelings; happy, sad, angry, romantic - he boosts them up and uses them as a distraction, makes others think he's not sharp as an arrow.

He values Gamora's choices. We see him flirting at Knowhere, she pulls a knife on him and he doesn't directly flirt again for a while. You see that in Vol 2 when he's patient about her having feelings. He SHOT HER in Infinity War because she told him to. She's dead but she knows - she knows that's love.

We know he respects her choices in all situations...except in Vol 3. He's more childish and clingy especially compared to the other Guardians - they don't try as hard as Peter does to get her back. I feel like this is justified; he's already heavily traumatized from Infinity War and as acknowledged in the movie(!) Peter is dependent on Gamora in a way that the other Guardians aren't.

And with Vol 3, he's lost that part of him. He just wants "his Gamora" back. And it's cringy and sad and messed up.

You can parallel it to Thanos, who just saw "his little one", a daughter he trained to be a weapon and didn't acknowledge as a person. You can parallel it to the High Evolutionary, who wants his creations "perfect" and only sees Rocket as a failure that needs to be utterly destroyed.

(yeah it's a theme, its kickass writing, it's *chefs kiss* thank you mr. Gunn for tying this all up with a big fancy bow)

Peter is stronger than both of them. Able to move past what he thinks he needs and see Gamora as she is now instead of as he wants her to be.

"Like you wouldn't believe." He finally has something in his past that is complicated but at the end of the day, he can smile about it. An ending he can be at peace with.

Both of them know that they are not the same people that met on Xandar outside the pawn broker's shop. Fighting over their ticket out from under Yondu and Thanos.

But they know they could be good to each other again. It's just going to take some time apart.

Within the Wardrobe of (Lex) Luthor!

Part 1/? (1940-1941)

Did you know the Lex Luthor we know and love today has changed wildly over the years? He looked extremely different from the suave, Machiavellian villain we know today, clad in green suits and authoritarianism.

Back, in his extremely "humble" (cough, cough egotistical) origin, Luthor (not Alexander Luthor, just Luthor) made his first appearance in Action Comics #23 "Europe At War (Part II)" (1940) as a puppet master organizing a proxy war between unspecified European Countries so he can take over the ashes. He was ginger, hyperintelligent and preferred a baggy muumuu to anything else more dignified.

He managed to actually a score a temporary hit against Superman- keyword: Temporary. However, his dignity was only skin deep because he'll flee to save his own skin in the snap of one's fingers.

His next appearance is in Superman #4 "Superman vs. Luthor" (1940), clad in a spiffy purple suit, ginger hair and also trees? He had the ability to transmit his face...he never uses it again.

He does still have that recognizable respect-hate relationship with the Spandex'd Buffguy. His drip also improved with a kickass bomber jacket.

Later on in the same issue- "Luthor's Undersea City" he has apparently built a secret layer in a glass-domed city on Atlantis. He also wears an absolutely hideous bodysuit showing off his emaciated physique.

In Superman #5 "Luthor's Incense Menace" (1940) he appears in a spiffy suit with gray hair and sees straight through Superman's disguise.

Superman #10 "The Invisible Luthor" (1941) Ah, now this bitch is more iconic. He's bald and wears...a weird frilly neckpiece with a bodysuit?

In Superman #12 "The Beasts of Luthor" (1941) we probably get the most recognizable Luthor design so far- he's buffer, bald and wearing green- but the outfit is like...a jacket? It looks like a labcoat mixed with a jumpsuit.

In Superman #13 "The Machinations of the Light!" (1941) he wears an actually pretty dop disguise, but he's still wearing a bowtie on a labcoat- which is certainly a choice of all time.

Part Two: Luthor's Wardrobe (1941-1942)

a beast kickass mother unleashed - first of all, i'm not calling her a beast, that seems rude. but i wanted to select this option because just knowing how she did everything to protect pavetta and ciri, i think this is really where her 'lioness' moniker shines. i mean, regarding emhyr, if it were not for her who knows what would have happened to pavetta and ciri, and sooner! one of the worst things a parent can do is be careless about the safety of their child... i adore and respect that calanthe guarded them from evil, even when the evil was in the house:

‘(...) Calanthe was keeping a weather eye on me.’ ‘She never trusted you.’ ‘I know. I think she knew something about that prediction. And would have done anything to hamper me, and in Cintra I was in her power. (...) Calanthe guarded little Ciri like the apple of her eye. I couldn’t even have dreamed of kidnapping her.’

my friend's favorite, the blorbo by proxy -hiii :D and well, it's true. especially since i'm more of an aficionado of the saga than the short stories, i think you got me to appreciate calanthe a lot more and i'm very grateful for that <3

the fandom is so mean smh - or, alternatively phrased, unfortunately, our apartment's wall is right up against that of the netflix fandom's. but the book fandom also doesn't treat her well, particularly on reddit i've read some nasty comments about her with armchair military direction, essentially saying that they could have done a better job at defending cintra... guys. it's a story, and in this story the fairytale land is trampled by the big evil empire - no matter how good of a queen or military strategist calanthe ever was, no matter how good of defense cintra had, the massacre of cintra was going to happen because its what the plot demanded. i also think it's inaccurate to lambast calanthe for the nilfgaardian invasion, because not only are the nilfgaardians depicted as some kind of medieval-esque fantasy blitzkrieg, in these circumstances it's actually depicted that calanthe did a great and heroic job defending cintra. compare and contrast with the other northern monarchs during time of contempt! foltest, hem hem!

"They surrounded the Cintran army in the Marnadal valley. A battle was joined lasting the whole day, from dawn till dusk. The forces of Cintra fought courageously, but were decimated. The king fell, and then their queen (…) headed off a stampede, didn’t let them disperse, gathered anyone she was able to around herself and the standard. (...) They say she fought like a man, threw herself like a woman possessed into the greatest turmoil. They stabbed her with pikes as she charged the Nilfgaardian foot. that's a solid design right there - "Calanthe adjusted the narrow golden circlet on her curled ash-gray hair (...)" "Calanthe, her fingers tapping an emerald necklace, the smallest stone of which was the size of a bumblebee (...)" i adore her design, it's so wonderfully fantastical, which adds to the entire fairytale atmosphere of "a question of price" and cintra in general. and i also appreciate how it is mentioned that she gained weight in her grief following pavetta's death. i also really love the imagery of her in geralt's brokilonian vision: "The woman is wearing a silvery suit of armour, bloody, dented and punctured by the points of pikes or halberds. Blood drips in a thin stream from the corner of her mysteriously and hideously smiling mouth." strikingly saintworthy.

literally i would kiss them - i'm sure one of her "unfailing smiles" would make me blush!

if anything happens to them i will cry - i guess, "when things happened to them i cried," the massacre of cintra especially told through geralt's vision in "sword of destiny" and dandelion's account in "something more" are crushing, and especially taking into account the end of calanthe's part in "something more" where she tells geralt that she feels it will be the last time they see each other. there was so much vision, foreshadowing, and premonition around her death that it's like a wave of dark molasses... it inches closer and closer, as a reader you're entirely powerless. and i believe calanthe herself felt this too, but refused to live any different way because she would not abandon her country and people.

hey ive been trying to learn japanese but was wondering how you learned it? And with which app maybe...? (i use alot of apps including duolingo but may delete that app soon because of the annoying ads everytime i finish a single lesson.🙄😒)

I'm sorry I might not be a ton of help because most of my japanese learning has been in classrooms! I studied in high school (m...many years ago), and then lived in japan for a few years and went to school while I was there. But I'll do my best!

I do have a couple of apps/sites I like - wanikani is kickass for learning kanji if you haven't picked that one already. imiwa? and jisho.org are the dictionaries I like to use (both are good for finding unfamiliar kanji, too, if you learn how to search by radical). If you want pure listening practice for real life japanese, Japan Radio is okay but it can be a little hit-or-miss. Watching japanese shows with jp subs is also really good, you can use a proxy and watch things like crayon shinchan on jp netflix - or other shows aimed at younger audiences that use simpler language. It's a good way to pick up a lot of vocab/kanji from context (also shinchan just kicks ass).

I can point you towards some textbooks too, but a lot of it really depends on your goals - i.e. if you're just learning to watch anime without subs, I wouldn't suggest doing hard JLPT test prep the way I did because anime japanese ≠ test japanese (≠ real life/conversational japanese). If you want to get conversational the only real way to do that is to talk to someone, unfortunately, and that can be difficult, but there are still resources ... they're just not usually free ;;
