(Dec. 7th, Wednesday)
Wicks
He sighed after he said goodbye to Lynette, and they hung up. His hazel hue shifted away from the wide, nearly empty sidewalk to Garter. His friend wore such a puckish grin.
"You look proud of yourself."
Garter pulled up his chest, "Always am."
Wicks partially smiled back. It'll be fine. The sentence echoed in his mind over and over again. He couldn't help but reimagine what happened before.
Then his throat was tight; someone pulled at the back of his dark green compression long sleeve. It stopped him.
His attention crawled back out of his mind when Garter laughed.
"Were you walking with your eyes closed?"
Wicks had almost walked into a lamp post.
"Thanks." Garters' hand dropped. Wicks's body picked up the corners of his lips and smiled, "I was lost in thought with my eyes open."
In a human case, the mountain oni tilted over to allow Wicks more room. "Over this?"
Wicks limply bobbed his head up and down. "Yeah." The word left without conviction.
"Focus Wicks."
Not even a year after the war, he heard his Dad's voice changed and scarred—the croak of sore vocal cords never left his mind in times like this.
I'm on a mission. Wicks reminded himself. They were finally cracking down on the monster that assigned I.D.'s and seals without proper certification. Like they did to Claudia.
"Are you worried for little Lynette?"
His reply wavered. Garter caught him. He wanted to tell Garter and explain it all, though it was something only his family, Olivia, their leader, and himself knew.
Wicks tightened his ponytail, "she has a bad habit of getting into trouble. Even with humans."
His left arm tensed up like he was about to throw a punch. He always remembered the situations she got herself into in school. She meddled her way in, and he bailed her out. She never realized what might happen by intervening like that... He released a deep breath, or she didn't care.
"What kind of trouble? Fights?!" Garter gasped as he bent toward Wicks while they were still walking, nearing their destination. "She fights like she's never lifted her arms in her life!" He playfully kept his arms down and tried to swing them into Wicks.
Wicks responded with a soft push, "How dare you insult my sister in front of me."
Garter snickered, pleased with his joke.
You're bogus. Wicks smiled regardless—he knew Garter only poked fun at Lynette and didn't mean any harm.
He especially appreciated him.
Garter was a handful at times, and Wicks hadn't seen him enough before he started helping train Lynette. They rarely went on missions together like this.
Most of the time, it'd be solo. However, this only meant that Wicks would need Garter to cover the aspects he needed to improve.
It was the reason for his behavior when Lynette met and saw Zetsu. No one was supposed to know besides a few select agents like them.
They couldn't have anyone tip Zetsu off.
They were to bring Zetsu in and get a confession because those licenses and seals were essential. They were used to get into events and privileges.
The 'badges' were as physical as the C.P.P.A. ones that were generally bound to their palms, with some exceptions.
Wicks and Garter slowed down. The apartment complex looked rather beaten the closer they stepped. It is very worn down and barely livable compared to the other housing available. I know you make more in the C.P.P.A.
There was always the possibility that it could be a false lead.
"You're going in first," Garter reminded him.
He traced over the details, the barred windows, rusted over fire escape, and bits of fauna growing along the edges from the nearby patches of dirt running alongside the dirtied stone staircase.
"And you wait out here, on standby."
Wicks walked to the steps. Garter behind him threw up his hood and would be patrolling and putting a barrier up if fighting broke out.
Be careful with any questions. Wicks said to himself. Unlike other monsters, Sphinx's magic rarely gave off an indication that it had been activated. Any question could lead Wicks right into Zetsu's hands.
Wicks twisted the knob; he first assumed it wouldn't open because most wouldn't without a key, especially as there were plenty of buttons to press near the door to buzzer a room to let someone up.
Are the locks broken? Wicks questioned as he was blasted by the scents of cigarettes and the foul burn of cat urine. The rugs below his squelched slightly under his soles. Do people live in conditions like this? Not that he should talk; Madre wasn't well off when they all arrived on Earth. He remembered being on the streets for the first two weeks. If they weren't and stayed in a shelter, Madre wouldn't have been able to keep them. Not that we wouldn't have fought to stay with her.
Regardless, this, as a paid living condition, irked him.
He went toward the staircase, jagged carpet as well, and the doors themselves seemed paper thin with the number of voices he heard beyond them.
He knew they couldn't help everyone. They had numbers in the C.P.P.A. and leverage to a certain extent, yet their efforts were on the problems humans shouldn't constantly have to deal with monsters—including himself.
He climbed up to the fifth floor, room D. And knocked.
...
Drake
He flipped his hand back and let his own explosion erupt. Just like he practiced with a ferocious fury of fire and then into crackling sparks. Andras, who somehow possessed the same heartbeat and appearance as the blue haired Ace, threw himself back, unable to avoid all of it. His cloak nearly shattered, though it held while Drake's car almost went up in flames.
Drake escaped the asphalt and his eyes held onto Andras.
"I don't want to fight you, Flawless. I need you to have as much energy as you can spare for later."
Drake didn't feel like he had much anyway. Why do I already feel so drained? Did he do something else when he bit me.
Drake closed the distance between them, though Lynette blocked Andras before he could throw another blast.
Her eyes were dull, and not a muscle went against protecting him. Yet her heart scrambled like a rat in a tank filling with water.
"OUT OF THE WAY!" He commanded in a fusillade of animosity.
Her body listened to him past the puppeteering the fake Alexander used on her.
And it left Drake vulnerable to perform.
A hand came around holding bundle of steel cord. He couldn't close his mouth in time. The cord exploded like worms, and stuffed its way into his mouth. It kept him from closing his jaw and biting, and the left over strings went around his head to keep it secure.
He couldn't even lift a hand to fight as their next move hit him with temporary magic sealing cuffs. Drake flipped and bashed his head into the person holding up an illusion that made them look like Alexander.
It struck them, made them stumble but Drake did more damage to his body than theirs, because he didn't have a link to his form like they did in human cases. His own strength, it was better than humans, but most monsters were tougher.
Thus, the being got Drake when he attacked again.
While Andras pursued Lynette. She couldn't get far because of the barrier. She banged into it, which brought her out of Drake's ability.
Lynette dropped to her knees, her hands clutched up to her body. It hurt Drake to see.
"No need to cry, poor Lynette." Andras teased and changed his voice to Ace's. "You're worthwhile and I'm sorry I never noticed that before."
He listened to beats. It's not only fear of the situation. Drake didn't understand what else she was afraid of.
"Stop it, leave me alone! Let me live!" She huddled further, hiding herself in a ball, and trembling.
Andras approached and pushed the short bangs back. He knelt to her and reached out. "You're embarrassing yourself, someone part of such an esteemed-"
Her right hand swung back and swiped across his face. She nicked him with it across his nose. She was too quick on the draw.
She was worried about getting caught?
He laughed, "You're not as timid as I assumed!" The wound healed.
Lynette held up the blade and fumbled her stance, "why are you attacking Drake? What even are you?"
Andras looked her over, "you never attacked anyone with the intent to kill or really hurt them, have you?" He stepped closer. "You should have waited until it'd kill. I'm a magus, after all. I can simply end your life right now if I wanted."
She adjusted her stance, "Y-you could. Wh-why don't you then?"
"Because Drake needs you." He turned back and looked at them. "Isn't that-" his lips curled wickedly seeing Drake the way he was, "Osiris, you answer for him. He needs Lynette now, right?"
"Yes, so you should comply and help him," Osiris shouted to her.
Lynette's temporary control was revoked. She dropped her knife and nodded. I still can't combat that with my animosity. I wish I knew Disrupt.
Andras didn't turn. He glanced at the knife and then at the other object on the ground where Lynette had her foot.
"That's why you struck so early. You were contacting someone and didn't want me to see." He shifted his foot on the ground, opening a hole in the asphalt. He let it drop inside and buried it.
"Why don't you get those two into the car? I'll make sure the mess isn't found immediately."
They were first shoved into the car with Osiris still looking like Alexander. His best friend.
The lights on the ceiling burned, overly bright to Drake. The leather seats felt like an extra layer of constraint, as if he would sink into them if he pressed too much weight back.
The seats curved, only one door was usable. Meaning one viable exit. With a table and bar underneath across from them.
Andras switched places once he finished out there, and slipped Drake's phone from his pocket.
Drake knew one of them used illusion magic. Andras didn't. How does his heart sound like Ace's?
Andras put his arm around Lynette and smiled at Drake. She's his shield.
"What's the matter, Flawless? Are you not excited to be my merchandise again?"
Drake lurched at Andras, then stopped once he tipped Lynette's head away, exposing her neck. "Unlike you, she's fragile, isn't she? She can't regenerate at the same level as your species. One bite from me, and she'd bleed out."
Drake's toes curled in his shoes, and his eyes felt like they were bursting with falls of lava. He also hated that he found a fascination in that idea, blood from her.
Andras sat back, still holding her to his chest. "I already have two VERY excited clients looking to have a taste of you."
His anger was threatened to be snuffed out by his mention of clients. The flash flood of anxiety told him and his anger to run.
He remained still. Drake knew if he thrashed too much, he'd threaten Lynette.
His body desperately tried to change with no success. Vampires were immune to many poisons and trouble, but there were certain herbs they should never consume. And one of those was wolfsbane due to it's canceling properties on vampire beasts.
He couldn't even hiss with the metal twisted in his jaw.
"You look so angry, Flawless—you know this all could have been avoided if you-" The phone he took started to ring. It was Drake's. Andras bounced excitably, "Oh, look, it's short fuse."
Andras put his head over hers.
Her eyes look dead.
Surprise stabbed Drake, Andras perfectly copied his own voice too. He talked to Alexander like he would.
How is he doing that? His eyes aren't glowing. Drake had never seen a magus use magic without their eyes signifying it.
"That should keep him busy for a little while." He broke the phone, opened the car door, and tossed it out.
"Where were we-" He brushed Lynette's curls from her face and he sickeningly admired her. Tracing his finger across her lips.
Drake pushed forward to make Lynette's body move and stop Andras.
Andras noticed it, and his eyes flicked to Drake, "Sorry. I should pay attention to my real prize, huh?" He sat back, "You know how hard it is to find a Flawless like yourself. Easy to manipulate, to control, and defenseless."
SHUT UP.
"Because you were supposed to stay indoors, weren't you? Coddled up and protected by your family. Like a child."
Drake felt his teeth cracking under his clenching pressure. How the hell would you even know what they told me?
"But you can't help yourself, could you, Flawless?" Andras cackled. kicking his feet up on the table, "You never really change, do you?" He pointed his finger at him, "That's great though. It gives me the jitters thinking about old times."
His muscles couldn't squeeze any harder. He wanted to kill him.
"If you stayed with me, you wouldn't have to be like you are now. You could have lived with that perception of power I gave you." His words pierced into his head like lawn darts. "Don't you miss it?"
If another word was said, he would have snapped.
The driver's window came down, "Andras, someone broke into my brother's home. I have to leave."
They had been driving for about thirty minutes. Andras rolled his head along his shoulders and exhaled disappointedly. "I wanted to get further away, but toss the car into the ocean then."
Ocean?
The car started to speed up.
Drake hoped Andras would brace her as the car hit the metal railing.
...
Alexander
He saw both their cars, but neither Lynette nor Drake at them. They probably went inside. He tugged his tank top and sighed heavily.
He took a few steps forward, then stopped. A human's scent would typically linger in the air, especially one desirable to him like Lynette. He found it odd that he couldn't follow any traces toward the mall.
The winds didn't feel abnormally strong either; the breeze was oddly still. If anything, it left an uneasy calm.
He took out his phone and called Drake.
"Hey, are you finally here?" Alexander received the sass with his question.
Alexander smirked, "Don't start with me." He didn't have a hint of anger behind those words, simply an equal sass back. "Where are you guys at?"
It took him a second to respond. "Far back, left side, Lynette wanted to see the anime. We're in IYF"
"You mean you wanted to, Weeb." He teased. He was one of the only people who knew Drake was an avid anime enjoyer.
"Shut up!" He could almost hear the embarrassment, "Meet us over here."
Drake hung up after.
Alexander threw open the doors to the mall—the abundance of smells made his mind spiral to hunger as usual. This is why I eat before I go to these things. It at least made his desire to eat people manageable.
Why can't I smell her? Something he should have considered a blessing bugged him. It was as hard for him to ignore as it would be for someone to not pay any mind to a fly buzzing by their ear.
In a situation like this, he'd simply find them by tracking hers, but he knew there was no way every other scent would cancel hers out. His uneasiness grew with each step. Alexander paid less and less attention to the others roaming around him and got to the railing overseeing the other floors.
Drake wouldn't do something stupid to her, would he? Alexander asked himself. He knew if Drake did, he wouldn't have acted so calmly on the phone. Then what happened to her? Did Wicks give her something that hides her scent? Is there another hybrid with them? Drake didn't even give them any indication of danger. "Arm and a leg," "pulling my leg," and more. Basically, anything that had to deal with 'someone' holding or things costing a body part.
Alexander felt stupid because he went to call again and threw himself from the railing. This time, his phone went uninterrupted to voicemail.
His adrenaline struck like a volleyball spike into his chest.
He called a few more times, and the same thing happened without fail. Lynette's phone went to voicemail too.
His body moved, and his feet twisted back like his heart did. He couldn't think, he didn't—his eyes, upon instinct, brightened until they were similar to a flashlight, frantically searching for them.
He caught people's attention with his sprint.
He made it to their cars again, and he locked onto the two seals between them. He went to undo one—the curdling smell of blood felt forcefully injected into his nose. It's Drake's. He went to unbind the other seal. Then quickly stopped, holding the last 'latch'.
He was panicked, far too desperate to break it that he hadn't pushed himself to fully read it. The conditions of the seal were hidden behind one and only became apparent once it was undone.
He was left on a standstill. If he did undo the 'latch,' he'd be blown up with the cars. Though he'd survive, he'd erase the evidence.
He couldn't stop what he did as his body was bound to finish. So he was stuck holding a bomb.
All he could do now was observe every aspect of the seal and smell his brothers' blood that they tried to hide behind it.
...
Wicks
"Coming!" He heard Zetsu's voice from the other side of the door.
His eyes were softly illuminated. He couldn't see any other forms of magic used around him or on the door.
There was a jingle of the chain lock and a loud creak as Zetsu pulled it open.
"Hello-" Wicks expected him to slam the door in his face or for him to use magic. Not the innocence of confusion. "Wicks?"
"Hey, sorry to bother you like this, but we have to talk."
"W-we do?"
Then, what Wicks expected guilt. It was a familiar look that he saw Zetsu wear often.
"Can I come in?" Wicks asked.
Wicks didn't hold any particular appeal for the human-cased Sphinx—nonetheless, it was unsettling to know someone so kind acted against his C.P.P.A. Sure, the organization isn't perfect... He understood the importance of it and the good they've done thus far.
The scraggily brown-haired boy let Wicks inside. Despite being taller, Zetsu had such a youthful appearance. He looked 16 at most. It struck a chord with Wicks and made it harder to convict him.
He took his first steps inside. Carpeted gray like the outside, its dark shade concealed stains and smudges.
The air held a stale taste of mildew that chalked at the back of his throat. Why does he live like this? He makes good money.
He'd assume it'd be a front of some kind—that wouldn't explain why he was here now. Unless someone tipped him off.
He stepped past the giant cactus, and an immediate spark of magic rushed through his nerves. His dad trained him to pick up on the distinct pressure in the air when someone uses magic.
His back, not completely left open to Zetsu, hunched. His eyes darted to the trim right next to the plant. He immediately put his hand on the prickles, which made Zetsu jump.
"Wicks!"
They couldn't even break his cloak, so he felt nothing on his hand as he gripped and moved it over. He could see the seal instilled on the trim behind it.
It's a notifier. It'll tell someone I was here.
He turned his attention back to the kid, who innocently raised his hands, "Why are your eyes glowing. I thought you wanted to talk-"
"Who does that notify?" Wicks pointed to it.
"What?"
Wicks read over his thoughts even though his face looked honest.
"What is he talking about? What did Osiris do? What did he put in my house."
Zetsu's thoughts felt like blaring sirens warning of a deadly storm.
He pulled himself from the boy's thoughts, "Who's Osiris?"
Any other shade in his face besides white left. He stumbled away from Wicks and back into the closed door.
Zetsu trapped himself, and that's also why Wicks didn't approach. He maintained his distance. He assumed the boy might lash out under too much stress.
"Hey, I came here to talk. Okay. So tell me what's going on." Wicks controlled his tune. Stay calm.
"I c-can't! He'll hear, he'll know, he'll kill you." The boy got out of the door and went to open it and run out. Wicks had no choice; he threw himself forward and pinned the boy to the door. It slammed shut.
Compared to Wicks, Zetsu was much taller, closer to Garter's height, and had a thin-looking build to match.
"Stop this, Wicks!" He shouted. His human case got dangerously close to breaking. And unlike most Magus's, Wicks sucked at sealing them back up. "Maybe you'll be fine if I get far enough away!"
"I can protect myself and you, Zetsu. Tell me who he is and why you're so afraid of him." Wicks didn't let up, regardless of the desperate wheezes Zetsu released.
"Fine! Just tell me what you want with me!"
Wicks dropped his grip because the exact copy of Zetsu's voice came from behind him.
A strike to himself was expected, not a strike to the floor.
Using enhancements like Wicks, they were able to increase their physical capabilities. He saw the person briefly—they were a copy of Zetsu. The only difference being a single streak of white hair.
He fell into the apartment below.
He heard a scream and quickly scanned the area. How did they get past Garter?
He picked up on the lone female in pajamas holding a controller. She stood from her couch and saw Wicks scramble out of the rubble.
"Whoa- are you okay, dude?"
Her voice seemed shocked more than angry. She got closer, and he met her gaze.
"Your eyes," she exclaimed as he lifted a hand and flashed her with light. Then, he got to her and erased her memory of the moment, making her believe she was getting up to get some water, and the blindness was a result of springing off the couch too quickly.
Garter was involved now by the sounds of above. Though, he needed to focus. He needed all his focus to return the floor to its proper position with reversal magic. It was a strenuous task for him like a muscle rarely worked.
And almost like clockwork, as soon as he got up, Garter came flying at him. He ducked out of the way and avoided being hit by his companion's body. Garter reinforced the walls and floors from what he saw.
Good. Wicks threw himself at the look-alike. They slung Zetsu in the way and used that momentum to avoid the hit themselves. Wicks held back the shot to an extent—albeit created a shockwave across Zetsu's body and knocked him back, similar to an attack with blast magic except focused solely on a point in his chest.
Zetsu's body folded inward, and he slammed back into his bookcase with glass dolls. He was knocked out.
Wicks turned his head to the enemy. "Give up, Osiris." Wicks wasn't sure about the name.
"It's not in my nature to tuck my tail like Earths' dogs," he responded, "besides, wouldn't you rather help your partner? He can't heal himself at the moment."
There was a reason Garter had yet to get up and was late to the fight.
Wicks glanced back. Garter's body wasn't moving. He remained slumped at the door.
"Your choice: capture me or help your friend." He tapped on his watch. "You have five seconds left."
Wicks noticed the seal had been changed, it was going to explode and Garter was near it. He raced to him, wrapped Garter in a cloak and kept his own back to the blast to protect him. Though the room was enforced, it still sent them back and allowed Zetsu and Osiris to escape.
And to make matters worse, he couldn't follow them, because Wicks had gotten word that Lynette texted Suzie for help.
