This place really was the type of place she had always tried to avoid in the past. It just felt like a different type of prison to her. Though really, any normal life had ended up feeling like that. Had she been happy? No. But she had been free, and after everything that was all she could really wish for. Here though? Here she didn't feel either. The whole reason I was thinking about the movie Holes is I was reading Blanche Barrow's memoir and this made me keep thinking about Kissin' Kate Barlow. But also I do think about Holes unprompted on kind of a wildly regular basis

Once Katherine Barlow was a normal woman, living a normal life in Green Lake. She was the teacher in a small town, teaching the children during the day, and the adults at night. She was also famous for her spiced peaches. However the schoolhouse was falling down, and the local onion seller Sam told her that he could help fix it up, and the more time she spent with him the more her feelings grew. But Trout, the son of the man who owned the town, also had his eyes on her, not accepting her rejection. He eventually saw her and Sam kissing in the school room. But it was 1904, and illegal for a black man to kiss a white woman. Trout rounded up the town to burn the schoolhouse down. Katherine ran to the sheriff, but he was drunk and demanding a kiss. He then told her he wouldn't do anything because he always got drunk before a hanging. As the mob ran to find him, she tried to warn Sam, instead watching Trout's boat catch up with him on the water and then kill him.

The next morning, Katherine went back to the sheriff, shooting him and leaving a lipstick kiss on his cheek. She then rode out of town. The kindhearted teacher was gone, and instead she became one of the most infamous outlaws, robbing every bank and trainline. She always left a lipstick kiss on the men that she killed giving her the name of Kissin' Kate Barlow. Her plan was always to hide the treasure back in the remains of Green Lake, after all it hadn't rained since the moment they had killed Sam.

And then she woke up in London. For now she's acting like her original self, realising that it would be a lot harder to be an outlaw in this place than back home.

kissin kate barlow has the best villain origin story ever put to paper. if i fell in love with a sweet man who just wanted to sell onions and show of his sick carpentry skills and they killed him for being black i think i would also snap and kill everyone involved in the most ironic way possible.
