West Side Story is set in the mid-1950s in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, then a multiracial, blue-collar neighborhood. At the age of seventy, after years of consolidating his empire, the Great Lord Hidetora Ichimonji decides to abdicate and divide his domain amongst his three sons. Taro, the eldest, will rule. Jiro, his second son, and Saburo, his third son, will take command of the Second and Third Castles but are expected to obey and support their elder brother. Saburo defies the pledge of obedience and is banished.

It's beautiful. It's Kurosawa's biggest, most expensive film. It's about nuclear war and how technology has only made killing easier. It's about Kurosawa's fear that he was old and obsolete. It's an adaptation which asks what sins Lear had to commit to become king. This is the only version of King Lear where Goneril is implied to be a kitsune. (Or, where Albany is a kitsune, however you want to look at it)

DND Campaign: L.A. Numinous

The Pantheons of the World are not as fantastical or mythical as you might think. They are around us, always hiding in plain sight. They hide from the Mortal Realm, having forgone most of their earthly attachments after the Great War, the World War, the Last War that they would put themselves through.

They hid their World, their mythologies, their fantasies from the Mortal Realm, between the cracks of what can and can't be seen. There in the unperceived, the lives of fantastical creatures, of ogres and fairies, of kitsune and deities, they continue to survive.

It's 2028, just 6 months before the Summer Olympic Games starts anew in the City of Angels, Los Angeles. You scroll through your X feed, look at the current trending topics: Articles about Whales and Dolphins taking over the sea; The Olympic Flame being ignited in Greece; And the death of an Instagram Model with no leads. It's almost banal and boring as you flick through tweets.

Perhaps, just at the corner of your eye, you see a little miracle, a trick of the light or a creep of a shadow. But something/someone tumbles over you, a friend, a loved one, a mentor you've known for some months, weeks, or maybe only a few days. They're blood soaked and their eyes are pleading, worrying, and saddened, as they look at you, clutching at wounds that only look seconds old.

"Aphrodite is dead. This was not how I meant for this to happen but I'm sorry but I must pass my Eidolon to you before it's too late."

Light flashes before you could even ask. You find yourself engulfed with it, bathed in it and then... nothing.

Now there's a dead body in your hands and an ominous feeling in your chest. Your phone beeps and rings to life with a spoken message. You're pretty sure it didn't have that feature before.

Hi, hello, Name's Kiri or Hex or Vai! I hardly ever post on Tumblr anymore or advertise any campaign ideas here due to school but this one has been nagging me just a little bit more after listening to Stray Gods, watching American Gods, and rewatching the Percy Jackson films, so I needed to just write down the blurb and the pitch in case anyone is wanting to play some DND in a Divine Urban Fantasy kind of setting.

The game is set in contemporary Los Angeles, a few years into the future, a few months before the Summer Olympic Games. You have been accused for the assassination of a Deity and usurping their power and status, their Eidolon. Through the Eidolon, you gain power and are now able to perceive Los Angeles in its truest form, a City of Mythical Creatures living in secrecy.

During Character Creation, you will choose a Deity from any Pantheon (Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Egyptian, Norse etc) whose Eidolon has been passed down to you.

This is going to be a Human-centric campaign so, despite the advertisement of other races in the game world, physically your character will be Human. Through the power of the Eidolon, they can be reskinned with the capabilities of other DND races.

Gameplay will be roleplay heavy, debating on either PBP semi-live text or just Discord VC with a separate channel for Texting RP. But there will also be combat involved of course.

The DM, me, hi, has a flexible schedule but I am in PST so applicants who are close to that would be preferred.

Current Allowed Resources are PHB, Xanathar's, Tasha's, and Mythic Theros

Depending on interest, around 4-8 rotating players can be taken.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #128-132, FCBD, OPENING MOVES #1-2 MAY - SEPTEMBER 2022 BY KEVIN EASTMAN, TOM WALTZ, SOPHIE CAMPBELL, PABLO TUNICA, FERO PE, TONY GREGORI, PATRICIO DELPECHE, RONDA PATTISON AND SHAWN LEE

I have been reading these issues as they were coming out, but for many reasons, I wasn’t able to review them until now... so there is a lot to unpack.

First, the Venus arc:

- Donatello and Alopex were captured by Dr. Barlow, they discovered that he was commissioned to create copies of the turtles (by Null).

- Venus can communicate telepathically and both of them were exposed to the electromagnetic energy of the dragon scale.

- While being bombarded with this energy, Donatello was able to reach the astral plane and talk to his father (both in their former life).

- Venus carapace was created from Donatello’s original carapace.

- The rest of the turtles (and their students), assuming their disappearance had something to do with the frogs, payed them a visit (this goes wrong).

- Venus helps Donnie contact Shredder in his astral form, and he comes to rescue them. Freeing them.

- The lab gets destroyed by the ship carrying a now mature Seri (who in this continuity is a triceraton).

- Sheena and Clyde kill Groundchuck and Dirtbag.

- Venus doesn’t remember her life as Bonnie, so she decides to take her own path.

- Bludgeon contacts her, attracted by her aura. Maybe she becomes part of the Foot?

- The turtles reunite and take Seri to their lair.

- Dr. Barlow manages to escape with a blood sample from Donatello.

So... for this arc, I couldn’t really place what the inspiration was for Dr. Barlow, but his area of expertise and his odd relationship with Donatello, makes me think he is some sort of adaptation of Dr. Cornelius Quease (from the next mutation).

And just like in that show, there will be four clones of the turtles, which takes me to the FCBD special.

This is a prelude to Armageddon game, and it is narrated by Venus (starring the clones). There is not much to say about it, it’s a remake of TMNT #1, but with slight alterations (like the turtles using weapons that are not their own).

More will be explained as the saga continues.

At the end of the Venus arc, Shredder needed to tell Leonardo and the turtles something important... but we need to stop by the “Opening Moves” two-parter.

In this mini, Kitsune and Shredder evaluate all the enemies involved in the saga recruited by the Rat King. We get to see who they are, and in some cases, we get to see a lot.

Also, Aka was reborn.

Madame Null was probably the biggest surprise, everything about her backstory screams Archie comics, from the Nova Posse (here known as the Nova Squadron, which should probably be changed to avoid copyright issues), Cherubae, Cudley, Verminator 2 (I guess we are only 8 tries away from Verminator X), Noi Tai Dar (the demon that created that dog mob guy), and there is a lot more.

It is also quite interesting to see Old Hob doing something. Since Mutant Town started, his plans were pretty much confusing, so I am eager to see what’s going to happen to him. I think he may end up dying in this arc.

Shredder is on his own, and goes to train the Turtles in the mystical arts.

This doesn’t go well with the extended family. Alopex in particular, who simply cannot trust Saki. So she and Raphael break up.

The mystical arts are basically black magic, something Leonardo experienced first hand during the “City Fall” saga (when he was converted into the Shredder’s chonin).

If you are wondering why Saki never used these powers against his enemies, they are only meant to be used for emergencies and they do come at a cost.

Saki trains the Turtles into the five elements (pretty nice that we have 5 turtles), and makes them explore new sides of themselves. The most interesting one being Donatello, now being at ease with all this mystical stuff (something changed for him when Venus helped him reach the astral plane).

The turtles communicate with the spirit of Splinter, just like in the movie (although he wasn’t dead in the movie).

Also, a small retro-continuity change. It was revealed that Jennika was present when the foot attacked the Northampton farm (this was way before Jennika was introduced). So... will that issue go up in value now?

Anyway, the last two issues were a little meh, they were cool but they were mostly the turtles learning new stuff.

The end of the Venus arc and this last arc feel a lot like a course-correction. People were complaining that the Turtles weren’t the focus of the book (something I do not agree with, but whatever), so they suddenly became the only characters.

And there other things here and there that makes me think that IDW is reacting to the critics.

Now, I have been enjoying the book all along, and I do understand the criticism. But mostly because I believe this period of time was a bit too long. Two years of no progress since issue #100. But I do think the Foot clan needed to take a break from the book.

So I don’t have problems with the story, it’s consistent with past issues. My main problem is with the art. Tunica is just not my kind of artist (and he seems to be heavily inspired in Studio Ghibili movies). Fero Pe seems to have a nice art style, so I am looking forward for the next saga.

"Curiosity killed the cat, sure, but satisfaction brought it back, didn’t it?"

To say that Luis' life growing up was not particularly exciting would hardly be an understatement.

He was raised on a farm out in middle-of-nowhere Nebraska, with a grandfather, two dads, an aunt, and 3 cousins, he'd earned himself a reputation as the most wild of the kids, quick to follow instinct-driven impulses, often enough rebellious and sure of his own capacity to be independent.

Since they lived in an area where quite little of supernatural was known to happen, there was hope that Hunters, Kitsune, or Mediums would be none too likely to bother them. Still, it was a closely held rule of the family, coming from his grandfather, never to let anyone else think any of them were anything other than regular people for their safety.

So long as there was no company, any of them were free to act however they felt most comfortable.

While prone to mischief, Luis was easy enough to keep busy by making use of his curiosity one way or another. He would not in person meet any other non-human people (as far as he knew) back then, but he certainly heard plenty about all sorts of them, along with a variety of creatures.

The wealth of it being a mix of true fact, misconceptions, and falsehoods, which Luis' hungry mind accepted easily and without questioning its validity.

It didn't surprise anyone when he decided he wanted to go out of state for college, even if him choosing University of Maine, Wicked's Rest as his first choice rather did.

His life there started out crammed into a shared rented space with half a dozen peers, working part-time, and studying music production in the infamously supernatural-plagued town.

It was perhaps a small miracle that his adventurous nature at the time didn't get him killed one way or another, learning of the many dangers present through a mix of personal experience, offered warnings, and overheard rumours.

In the process, he'd come to learn about other shapeshifters in particular, and cleared up many of his own misconceptions about how similar they supposedly were to himself.

He wanted to help, to talk them into embracing who they were. All the while failing to notice how the years spent among largely humans had driven him to hide his own being deeper and deeper. The start of a chain reaction.

When he first moved out to Gatlin Fields, having made a deal to help with farm chores given his own preexisting expertise, about a year ago, it was simply to seek more open air and less people all around.

It was during the winter holidays when he'd gone back home to catch up with family in person for the first time in a few years that one of his cousins asked him why he wasn't acting like himself even around them.

He'd laughed it off then, but it came to gnaw at him.

Character Facts:

Despite not outwardly expressing very much emotion, especially in his tone of voice, an open/relaxed posture and a vaguely friendly neutral expression is unlikely to make him all too intimidating to approach to anyone new.

Despite having lived in Wicked's Rest for no more than a decade, Luis has arguably had enough personal experience there that he'd not stand out much from the locals who grew up there

He can speak English, Spanish, and a little bit of Italian

He knows how to play piano and acoustic guitar, though gets nervous being watched or listened to.

In university, he pursued a music major, assuming he'd one day go into music production. He has not made any use of this yet.

Despite trying to wear entirely different clothes for going into town vs hanging around Gatlin Fields, even a regular human could probably tell where he lives by smell alone.

This is a book published under the auspices of Kew Botanical Gardens, discussing in short essays (2-4 pages) a variety of trees of historical, cultural and industrial significance. Each is illustrated with botanical illustrations and photographs taken from Kew archives, some of them from the 18th century. Not all of them, because some plants are significant because of their recent discoveries, such as the dawn redwood or Wollemi pine. The book is very pretty, and a quick read.

67. Dark Persuasion: A History of Brainwashing from Pavlov to Social Media by Joel E. Dimsdale. The title says it all, really. The author has both a professional and personal connection to the topic at hand, being a psychologist whose senior colleagues include several people affiliated with MK-Ultra, and who lived nearby the Heaven’s Gate compound in 1996. Dimsdale does admit that the term “brainwashing” is reductive and even silly, but the use of coercion, sleep deprivation and surreptitious manipulation to get people to make decisions that aren’t in their best interests is real. The book focuses on the 20th century, with the long shadow of Pavlov and operant conditioning influencing most of the discussions. The book is strongest in the mid-section, which is the MK-Ultra material. Edit: doing the image searches for this led me to discover that “Dark Persuasion” is also the name of a German chocolate cake-inspired beer, which sounds delicious. But completely unrelated.

68. The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll Through the Hidden Connections of the English Language by Mark Forsyth. This book feels like it would do numbers on tumblr. The introduction is basically, “etymology is my autistic special interest, and so I am going to subject you to it for the next 200 plus pages.” The book goes deep into the origins of words and how they are related to each other in weird ways, following a very stream of consciousness journey from books (in idiom) to books (in the actual meaning of the word). It’s easy to pick up and put down, as it is broken up into short chunks of a few pages each. If you ever wanted to know what chickens have to do with gambling, the relationship between chess and the world of finance, and why naan is “naked bread”, this book is for you.

69. Deep Time by Riley Black. Black is an author I quite like, and who is on tumblr at @rileycatrocks​! This book is a survey of history from a deep time perspective, starting with the Big Bang and progressing to the human era. It kind of zooms in from the cosmic scale to the scale of Earth fairly shortly, and goes through mass extinctions, evolutionary milestones, and the formation of various notable Earth features. The book is written for a British audience, and so a fair number of the examples are British. We end at Hadrian’s Wall, which was used by James Hutton to demonstrate that the Earth’s strata must have taken millions of years to form, not the few thousand presumed by biblical literalists. The book is dominated by its imagery, which unfortunately is kind of uneven. It’s very much a case of what pictures can the publisher get the rights to, which means that there’s a lot of lovely photographs and some very dodgy CGI paleoart. There are a few pieces by Mark Witton (one of a walrus in Ice Age Europe, one of a parieasaur in the Permian extinction) that stand out for their quality.

70. The Fox’s Wedding by Matthew Meyer. This book came in the mail this week, after a long time of waiting for the Kickstarter to deliver. Meyer is the proprietor of yokai.com, which is both an excellent resource on Japanese folklore and a personal inspiration to me. It’s fair to say that @thecreaturecodex wouldn’t exist, at least not as it does, without Meyer’s writing and art. This is the fourth book compiling his work. As the title suggests, kitsune are a major focus of the book—about a quarter of its length is devoted to kistune ranks, habits and specific kitsune named in legends and literature. Since the book was written recently, it also devotes a fair amount of space to Japanese folklore related to plagues and diseases; yokai that spread disease, yokai that prevent or warn against disease, yokai that are diseases.

When Stiles finds out that Loki is his father, he doesn't go to him right away, he research first because that's how he works. I hadn't survived that long by rushing. He doesn't know how Loki will react to his presence (nor the Avengers, but they're not important), yet with his mother dead he's the only family he has left and more importantly, he's someone he can learn from, about the world and about himself. Mischief and Magic

Loki spent the rest of the school day at Morgan’s side.  He wouldn’t risk another incident with her health.  Not after the horrendous gym class.  He spent his time watching over her, wondering just how badly she’d been injured in the attack that day and just how much of her life his actions had caused her.  He hated that she’d been injured, hated that she still bore the scars of the battle to this day.  

Luckily, she had no other incidents that day, besides being fatigued from the gym class.  She let Loki walk her back to the tower and he helped her sneak up to her room to take a nap, slipping past her father without them being seen.  She clearly didn’t want to tell him about the incident in gym class.  Loki wasn’t about to break her confidence over one incident.  If it happened again… then he would risk Tony’s wrath to bring it up.

But only if it happened again

The next day was Saturday, so Morgan didn't have school and Loki didn’t have to escort her or guard her. However, that didn’t mean that he didn’t want to see her.  The Starklet was interesting and sparked his curiosity.  She had magic.  He knew she did, but he hadn’t seen any sign of it since the battle of New York.  

So Loki waited for her to come to breakfast that morning to spend an entertaining morning with the Starklet. Except the troublesome little Starklet didn't come to breakfast. That worried Loki, especially when it got too late and even more especially after her medical issue the day before, so he went back upstairs to check on her.  The path between his suite and hers, and the common room and her suite was well traveled by the god by then.  The entire team knew it and Tony pretended he didn’t.

When Loki got to her room, he knocked politely on the door and found that there was no Morgan in her room either.  Definitely a troublesome little Starklet. "Lady Morgan?" Loki called out. "Where have you gone?" He asked the question to himself, not really expecting an answer.  Though things didn’t always happen as expected in the Avengers’ Tower. In fact, things usually didn’t happen as one would expect.

"She is down in her lab, sir,” Jarvis told Loki, announcing it from a speaker above Loki’s head.  Jarvis answering random questions around the tower, even when not directed to him, was definitely in the norm in the tower.

Loki looked at the ceiling, still getting used to the AI.  His instinct was to treat it like a servant and be polite to it.  It controlled a lot of the tower, he’d found out. “How long has she been there?"

"A couple of hours,” Jarvis replied, sounding displeased.  Loki bet that Morgan had gone down to work without eating breakfast.  She was too alike to her father in some ways.

Loki nodded, though wasn’t still entirely sure if Jarvis could see him. "Could you tell her I'm coming?"

“Yes, sir,”

Loki quickly made his way to the floor where Morgan’s lab was.  He knocked on the door before he walked inside.  Morgan had already given him permission to enter her lab whenever.  He’d proven his trust. “Lady Morgan?" He asked when he saw her.

Morgan glanced up from her project and gave him a bright smile which warmed his heart.  It was rare for people to be glad to see him and the little Starklet always was. “Hey Loki,”

"Hello, Lady Morgan," he replied warmly, returning her smile with a soft one of his won. "It's time for breakfast.”  He figured she had forgotten.

His theory was proven true when her bright smile turned to a pout. “But I’m working,” she whined, resembling her father far too much. 

Loki chuckled, finding her absolutely adorable. "You'll be able to focus better when you're not hungry,” he reasoned far too reasonably.  

Morgan knew that a Loki would not be easily dissuaded.  So she got up from her lab table. “You’re stubborn,” she grumbled at him, but good naturedly.  

Loki chuckled and offered his arm to her to escort her to breakfast. "Let's get you fed, Starklet,”

Morgan took his arm and let him drag her from the lab.  He didn’t really have to drag her.  She went easily enough once she remembered that food existed and her friend wanted her to eat.  Loki escorted her to breakfast and seated her at her usual chair.  He was a gentleman after all.  She gave him another brilliant smile in thanks as she took her seat.  Loki took his own seat across from her and had a moment to notice her arc reactor glowing through her t-shirt before Barton set a plate of pancakes in front of each of them.  

Loki looked curiously at the food in front of him. Pancakes were new. He looked at them dubiously, unsure about the fluffy food.  

Morgan grinned at his adorable reaction and started doctoring her pancakes with butter and syrup.  Loki recognized syrup.  He loved sweets and had gotten a rundown on as many sweet Midgardian foods as he could "Barton makes the best pancakes,” Morgan informed him.  “They’re sweet,” she reassured Loki as she helped him doctor his pancakes.  He took a careful bite and purred loudly when he did.  He felt the boost to his magic almost immediately.  “Like them?” 

"They're amazing!"

Morgan grinned "I think so too,”

Loki beamed and devoured the sweet pancakes. He loved that Morgan shared his love for sweets and she seemed to perk up with the sugar too.  That was no surprise since she had magic, even if there was no sign of it. 

The team seemed more amiable to Loki since his friendship with Morgan had solidified.  He didn’t understand it, since he didn’t trust them as far as he could throw them, but he understood that it was Morgan’s influence that had swayed them.  Thankfully, after Barton finished cooking and left, the pair were alone in the dining room.

Loki looked at Morgan as he ate, glad he no longer had to deal with the team. "Going back to your lab after breakfast?"

"Unless something more interesting comes up,” she replied. She got distracted a moment later and frowned over at her alarm when it went off. She tried to silence it, but Jarvis was insistent.

Loki jumped at the alarm with a soft hiss.  He really was an overgrown cat. "What's that for?"

Morgan sighed and blushed. "To remind Miss Stark to take her medications,” Jarvis said grumpily 

"Medicine? For what?" Loki fretted, already looking over Morgan with his magic.  His friend needed medication??

Morgan sighed again and grumbled about Jarvis tattling on her. "Weak heart and lungs and asthma,” she replied sheepishly as she dug her pill container out of her pocket to down her meds.  She didn’t want to draw attention to the fact that her medical conditions were because of his attack on New York.

Loki nodded. "There's no shame in it,”

She raised an eyebrow “You don't think me a weak little Midgardian?" He’d complained about the mortals often enough.  

"Of course not," Loki replied, shaking his head.  Morgan got an exception.  She was Morgan.

"Happy now?" she grumped at Jarvis when the pills were gone.

“Extremely, Miss Stark,” Jarvis replied dryly.

"Jarvis is like an overbearing parent,” Morgan grumped to Loki, looking like a grumpy kitten

"A second Stark?" Loki teased her fondly.  They were friends.  Teasing was allowed.  It wasn’t mean spirited, just friendly.

"Yes, but one who's with me everywhere. Permanent babysitter,”

Loki chuckled. "You get into nearly as much trouble as I do when you're not even trying," he reasoned.  It was perfectly logical for her to have a permanent babysitter.

She stuck her tongue out at him and laughed "Do not"

"Not from what I've observed," Loki replied, laughing along with her..

Morgan smirked at him “See if I take you with me on my next adventure,” she threatened. Loki chuckled and shrugged, not threatened in the lead.  Morgan’s smirk only got smirkier, resembling Loki’s own mischievous looks. "And here I was going to introduce you to ice cream,”

Loki raised an eyebrow. "Ice what??"

"A dessert. A very sweet one. You do like sweets, right?" Morgan teased innocently.  Loki absolutely adored sweets, which they both knew perfectly well.

Loki nodded. "I love sweets."

"Then you'll like ice cream,” she informed him easily. She got up from the table, which Loki had magically cleared of all the dirty dishes. "Let's go,”

Morgan ignored that Loki was supposed to have a babysitter to leave the tower. She could babysit a Loki.  Totally.

 Loki went with her without complaint. With sweets and his mischievous friend involved, he definitely wouldn't talk about his lack of a babysitter.

- Casey: A True blooded werewolf (born a werewolf). her 7ft tall stature and nauturally build body is callling of that. Shes a fare skin brunette with hair going down to her shoulders with differing tattoos on her body. Being a true blood she can turn any part of her into wolf and even go fully into a wolf form (but cant turn anyone). She has a hard time finding clothes that fit her let along her dumptruck of an ass. shes normaly docile and loyal but can be drawn out to her more wild nature.

-Fuyuko: A light blue and white kitsune, only haveing 4 tails each with a light blue fire above them. constantly drunk, she has a very bubbly personalnality flrting alot. being a kitsune she can change her form at will normally keeping the light blue color and smell of sake.

-ViVi: a peppy cyber cat girl. she may seem innocent but she has a high body count (if you know what i mean) in addtions to her normal cat features she has glowing mech-like armor on her fore arms on legs (visual ref)

-Tony: Casey's older brother. Also being a true blood he also has a height of 8'5ft and is naturally ripped. a well groomed beard with a ruffle of hair. He is very stoic and layed back at times, but is way more wild than Casey. if he finds a lady he likes he would be very "forceful" when it comes greeting them and sex.
