Copen: You say you’ve been keeping our base up to code but I’ve been talking to Kyota and he informed me that the floor is actually lava, which I don’t need to tell you, is a pretty serious safety hazard.
Kohaku: Was that a joke just now?

Alright. I’m late but here’s my backlog report for January. How did my first month of 2024 go in terms of games?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a word, rather well.
Trails from Zero:
The first game of the new year that I beat. Would you believe me if I said this whole thing only took me about a week of concentrated play to beat?
Anyways, it’s probably the most solid title in the Trails series so far. As I’ve said before my journey into Trails was a bit screwy, due to only having a Switch and a standard laptop. It was surprising to find that a lot of the good that the series accumulated was actually added in this entry specifically, from attacking enemies on-screen, to bonus experience, to being able to use combo attacks a la Chrono Trigger.
Also, music good.
Star Ocean Second Story R:
I’m a sucker for anything that can blend science fiction and fantasy, which means that this was almost as good as drugs.
The only two negative things I can say about it is that 1.) the music wasn’t really bad, but not what I’d call my favorite, and 2.) I wish that characters had more interaction in Private Actions. I like the Private Action events, but I wish more involved more than the protag and the character in question.
My complaints with First Departure, mainly that the combat felt very barebones and there was no fast travel, have been destroyed here with extreme prejudice. The breaks and sidesteps are fun additions that don’t break the game, and the fast travel system not only gives you easy access, but also notes when and where events are available, so no more cursing yourself for not having the exact timing to recruit a character.
Gunvolt Chronicles 2:
If you liked Mega Man Zero/ZX, chances are you will like or do like this series. I myself have been a fan since the 3DS days.
Unfortunately, while I did enjoy my time with this, I was a little bit disappointed.
In terms of gameplay, Copen no longer feels like Copen. The high-speed human pinball has been grounded and his range has been shortened. While he gets his wings back once the kudos reach a certain threshold, this means that I was constantly cursing my muscle memory, having to remind myself that I only had one air dash and the attack button was no longer a straight shot but a melee saw.
In terms of story, while I like a few of the ideas and the new character of Null, I found it hard to truly get invested. None of Gunvolt Chronicles 1’s supporting cast is present aside from Kohaku, and we frankly don’t spend enough time with Null or Ypsilon for them to be compelling. Also ‘character falls into portal because reasons!’ is a trope I hate. They explain it eventually, but it’s just the perfect encapsulation of how break-neck fast this story moves. Prologue movie where characters get isekai’d, short two-sentence long introduction to Null, and Bam! Months long time-skip.
I feel like Inti-creates and I just have different opinions on the Gunvolt series’ identity, but that’s a discussion for an entirely separate time. I make these reports to have fun, not to vent.
Final Fantasy IV (DS version):
Would you believe me if I said this one took half the month?
Anyways, I first encountered this game on the Wii’s Virtual Console shop, back in the good old days of owning your own retro software. Being a kid of average intelligence, it completely escaped me that you could save on the overworld, which meant that despite trying to get into it a few times, FFIV was the first game to be booted when I needed memory space.
A few years back I finally got my hands on a copy of the DS remake with 3D models and voice acting by the likes of Yuri Lowenthal. And it rocked.
I think the augment system is undercooked, but that is the only complaint I can think of, because the music, the story, and the gameplay are all great! Let me put it to you this way: FFIV’s active time battle system was so good that they used it for five more games straight, and borrowed from it heavily for 12.
I know that the Crystal Remasters have come out and gained notoriety, but I still prefer this version because of the solid voice cast, fun art direction, and balanced yet challenging difficulty.

videogame asks 20 and/or 24 ~
20. A boss you think is really cool
Hmmmm, I think a lot of bosses from the azure striker gunvolt series are cool as hell. I especially love Blade from luminous avenger ix 1 and Mother Computer from luminous avenger ix 2. Blade just looks cool as hell zipping about with a lightning sword whip and i am Insane about Mother Computer. the references baked into her design, her battle theme being a remix of Igniter, the anthem melody for copen from asgv2 and laix1 - tis perfect. the first phase fight against possessed kohaku was also my favorite boss in the game to learn, and the only one i could beat without taking damage. the second phase is MUCH trickier, but also fun, even if i had to rely on the game's easy mode infinite healing.
i also adore the final boss of kh3, as mentioned in a previous ask. stunning cinematography. i don't remember if i enjoyed the gameplay of it as much though. i definetly hated the phase of the fight where goat xehanort floated underwater and you had to air step toward him.
24. A game with a cool art style
A lot of games have great art styles! People are so creative! But i'm gonna give it to Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth. The chibi artstyle is adorable. The UI retains much of the slick p5 feel with a cinema theme. The enemy designs are fun, particularly the bosses, who are wild mish-mashes of persona enemies. The first one is Kamoshida as superman, the second is yosuke as a dinosaur. Phenomenal. One of the mini-bosses is a giant chicken.
The original character designs are also adorable, I love Hikari and Nagi, and the animated cutscenes like the musical opening are gorgeous. All around, a lovely game!

Here’s three more sets of my recently done pixels for more DRRPS I’m in. The first row is dubbed “Cartoonronpa”. As the title implies, 16 animated characters, anime/manga, and comic characters are placed in a Killing Game setting. Here’s the cast and their Ultimate Talents: Mickey Mouse- Ultimate Entertainer (Disney) [My character I’m playing] Molly Blyndeff- Ultimate Inscribed (Epithet Erased) Vagatha- Ultimate Hotel Manager (Hazbin Hotel) Dave Strider- Ultimate DJ/Time Traveler (Homestuck) Flicker- Ultimate Squire (Blazing Dragons) (Might update this later to fix, forgot the wings) Chalchiutlicue "Calamity"- Ultimate Aquamancer (No Evil) Equius Zahhak, Ultimate Robotician (Homestuck) Laura "X-23" Kinney- Former Ultimate Weapon (Marvel) Yasuna Oribe- Ultimate Survivor (Kill Me Baby) Katsuki Bakugou- Ultimate Pro-Hero! (My Hero Academia) Fenneko- Ultimate SNS Stalker (Aggretsuko) Violet Evergarden- Ultimate Soldier/Auto Memories Doll (Violet Evergarden) Ryan Akagi- Ultimate Guitarist (Infinity Train) Lop- Ultimate Swordswoman (Star Wars) Charlotte "Charlie" Magne- Ultimate Princess (Hazbin Hotel)
It’s postponed at the moment, it hasn’t started at the moment. But the bottom row’s RP has started. That RP’s Kiwironpa: Rebirth. 18 people from different times and worlds noclip out of reality, and find themselves in the Backrooms, which holds not just deadly monsters that could kill them, but also a Killing Game. . . In this, none of the characters have Ultimates, but the general consensus is the same. The cast of this Killing game is: Zote (Hollow Knight) Chicken (Nuclear Throne) Sucrose (Genshin Impact) Kizuna Tomori (Danganronpa Another) Vanessa (Five Nights At Freddy's: Security Breach) [My character I’m playing] Dr. Drakken (Kim Possible) Albedo (Genshin Impact) Tsumugi Shirogane (Danganronpa V3) Dave Suss Moogus (VS Dave and Bambi) SCP-105/Iris Thompson (SCP Foundation) Captain Goomba (Mario) Scott C./Phone Guy (Five Nights At Freddy's) King Knight (Shovel Knight) Rin (Muse Dash) BMO (Adventure Time) Copen (Azure Striker Gunvolt) Amon (The Legend Of Korra) Cerebella (Skullgirls)
It’s recently start, and so far it’s been a blast lol. The last row is for a DRRP called Wagerronpa. 16 recently deceased participants, whether they remember dying or not, all find themselves in a casino in hell. And like other KGs, they’re told the age old mantra: Kill each other, and get away with it. This cast is: Walter White- Ultimate Chemist/Drug Kingpin (Breaking Bad) Red Velvet Cookie- Ultimate Military General (Cookie Run) Ayame Hatano- Ultimate Sprinter (Danganronpa Another) [My character I’m playing] Cotton Candy Cookie- Ultimate Writing Prodigy (Cookie Run) Frisk- Ultimate Pacifist (Undertale) Deathcry- Ultimate Warrior (Marvel) Yuri Honjo- Ultimate Lucky Student/God Candidate (High Rise Invasion) Xiao- Ultimate Yaksha (Genshin Impact) Chara Dreemurr- Ultimate Narrator (Undertale) Mayuko Nise- Ultimate Survivor (High Rise Invasion) Giovanni Potage- Ultimate Supervillain/Talentless (Epithet Erased) Peter Quill- Ultimate Outlaw (Marvel) Morgana- Ultimate Phantom Thief (Persona 5) Pure Vanilla Cookie- Ultimate Leader (Cookie Run) Kohaku- Ultimate Maid (Tsukihime) Berdly- Ultimate Brainiac/Talentless (Deltarune) Hope you guys like these pixels.

June 6, 2020 8:08 PM EST
All the announcements at Indie Live Expo 2020, a huge stream celebrating doujin games, featuring messages from Swery, ZUN, Toby Fox and more.
The Indie Live Expo 2020 live stream event was held on June 6, revealing a plethora of info on Doujin games and Japanese indie games. Here’s a list of all the announcements made during the stream.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 was originally a Nintendo 3DS game launched in 2016. Inti Creates launched the game on PS4 in April 2020. It’s now coming to Steam on June 22, only two weeks from now. Read our review here.
2D Action Game Cogen: Sword of Rewind Announced for 2020 Release on Steam, Switch, PS4
youtube
Japanese indie studio Gemdrops announced Cogen: Ootori Kohaku to Toki no Ken. Also known as Cogen: Sword of Rewind, it’s coming in 2020 on PC, PS4, and Switch. Sakuraba is composing the OST. Read our dedicated article for more details.
Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth- Early Access Stage 2 Coming Late June
youtube
Team Ladybug announced on Indie Live Expo 2020 that the second stage of Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth- will launch in late June. A trailer showing the stage was published as well. Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth- launched in early access on March 12, 2020. As of now it only has a single stage, so it really is an early access. Stage 2 will include Efreet and Ylk as mid-bosses. The developers promises more content to come soon. You can read much more on this Metroidvania featuring Deedlit from Ryo Mizuno’s Lodoss novels with our past coverage here and here.
Online Multiplayer, Open-world, Survival Action game Craftopia Announced on Steam, with Early Access This July
[How to Join Closed Alpha Test of Craftopia]
1. Add Craftopia to wishlist in https://t.co/4jHzMqKuqV
2. Follow @PocketpairGames and RT this tweet
50 players will be chosen by lottery and receive the invitation code via DM. The application period is by 6/12 23:59 pic.twitter.com/yx3rHQkaKo
— Pocketpair – Craftopia (@PocketpairGames) June 6, 2020
Japanese indie devs Pocket Pair revealed its online multiplayer game Craftopia, and announced a Steam Early Access in July. Recruitment for a Closed Alpha Test also began.
Craftopia might look like Story of Seasons in 3D at a first glance, but it actually mixes Survival, Open-World, Crafting, Pokemon, and Online Multiplayer. Craftopia is also an hack ‘n’ slash, as you’ll craft your own equipment and learn skills to fight. You can make buildings and vehicles as well. The game promises a high degree of freedom, allowing you to do a lot of things that would lend you in jail in real life, such as building a giant machine to automatically boil livestock for food, or hunting elephants.
Craftopia looks like tons of fun and is definitely a game I’ll keep an eye on. The official site promises “endless possibilities”. If you can create a whole automated society complete with state racism and cops characters who assassinate innocents with impunity, I’ll buy this in a heartbeat.
Nimbus Infinity Announced on PC via Steam and Consoles (Release Date TBA)
youtube
GameTomo and GameCrafterTeam announced Nimbus Infinity, the sequel to high-speed mecha action game Project Nimbus. Nimbus Infinity will feature skill-based combat, diverse battlefields from asteroid belts to deserts, and customizable mecha & weapons. You can read more on the game on its official site. It’s interesting to note Nimbus Infinity was announced for PC via Steam and “consoles”, so perhaps it could come to Xbox Series X and PS5.
Sumire Announced for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch (Release Date TBA)
youtube
GameTomo revealed a brand new narrative-driven game, Sumire no Sora. it’s definitely one of the game that piqued my interest the most during the Indie Live Expo 2020 stream, so I detailed what we know about the game via a dedicated article.
Picontier, Coming to PC and Switch, Gets New Gameplay (Release Date TBA)
『ピコンティア』の最新映像が公開されました!でもこれは、まだほんの一部です!完成までもう少しお時間をください…!#ピコンティア #Picontier #gamedev pic.twitter.com/bGDtTuCnGm
— ユウラボ@Skipmore (@skipmore) June 6, 2020
Developed by Skipmore (Fairune, Kamiko) Picontier is a slow-paced garden raising game with cute pixel art. You can also fish and fight monsters.  It’s similar to Bokujou Monogatari (Story of Seasons) and its spinoff Rune Factory. They showed around 5 minutes of gameplay on the Indie Live Expo stream. Watch it at the 54:03 timestamp. The game’s developer asked us on Twitter to please wait a bit more till release. They’re also working on another game called Transiruby.
Touhou Fan Game Gensokyo Night Festival on Steam Gets Major Content Update Coming Soon
youtube
Tea_Basira announced during Indie Live Expo 2020 that its 2D scrolling action Touhou game, Gensokyo Night Festival, will get a new update soon. Similarly to Deedlit in Wonderland, the game is in early access. The update will add the game’s second stage, which has Utsuho Reiuji aka Okuu as boss, one of my favorite 2hues.
Chinese Parents, Already Available in English, Will Now Launch in Japanese
Chinese Parents is a pretty interesting sounding game. It’s a raising simulation where you live as a Chinese kid born in an average family, from their very early days of life up to the end of high school when they turn 18 years old. You decide how to spend your time, having fun, studying, learning skills, etc. It’s pretty much Princess Maker but with Chinese Parents. I’d definitely like to try it one day.
Children of Morta, Already Available in the West, was Finally Announced for our Japanese Peers on PS4, Switch
Children of Morta is an indie-action RPG available in the West on PS4 and Switch. Developed by Dead Mage, Children of Morta‘s story driven experience will hopefully become a hit in Japan. No release estimate for the Japanese version was announced yet, but hopefully the wait won’t be much longer. You can read our review of Children of Morta here.
The Indie Live Expo 2020 stream is embedded below. You have the English version and the Japanese version. Smaller announcements were also made, like new ports of existing games. Multiple already revealed or released games were featured for exposure too, such as Gnosia and Alter Ego S. If you’re interested, watch the Indie Waves Part 1,2,3 at the 1:15:56, 2:05:45, and 3:24:27 marks. The event also featured messages from popular Japanese developers:
ZUN (Touhou Project)
Toby Fox (“UNDERTALE”, “DELTARUNE”)
SWERY (CEO for White Owls Inc. ) (1:30:58)
Kazuya Nino (TYPE-MOON studio BB) (3:58:18)
Shuhei Yoshida(Head of Indies Initiative Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Jenova Chen(Co-Founder and Creative Director of thatgamecompany)
ZUN appears on stream at the 4:00:24 mark. He waited in the next room for like 6 hours, watching the stream unfold. Toby Fox’s heartwarming message follows soon after. You can watch Toby Fox’ message by itself here, but it isn’t as poignant without the comments from ZUN.

a quick post on my change in opinion towards Copen before i go to bed
so i'm starting to like Copen more because, as of LAiX, his motivations are a lot less selfish; he fights Adepts to protect the Minos, rather than to avenge his late father (and to protect his sister from Eden in ASG2).
but then i realized something
i like Copen more because his motivations are more like Gunvolt's in ASG1
they both fight Sumeragi to protecc the smol(s), and Sumeragi views them as extremely dangerous for pretty obvious reasons
they both have a group of four characters, three of which are pretty unimportant for almost all of the story and one being the most important story-wise (as of this post, LAiX isn't out yet, but i'm hoping that the group of smols, or at the very least, Kohaku, are actually important to the plot)
