Breakfast of Champions! @theroost920mass had the most delicious special this morning. The Chapuon! It was a scrumptious mix of pesto, mushrooms and tomatoes on sourdough bread. @annehollond and I added an egg over medium and was a perfect, healthy, nutritious breakfast to go with our Kansa Thistle. Our drink was a great mix of gin, Prosecco and blackberry. Sooo good! It was the perfect way to celebrate a #marchmadness win. Mass Street in Downtown Lawrence was alive with bright energy. Lawrence felt different today. After two years of hard days, it was so good to delight in living In one of the best college towns. The parents are in town!

Sooo, ich meld mich nach gefühlt ‘nem ganzem Schaltjahr dann auch mal wieder! Ist ne Weile her, ich will auch gar nicht versuchen irgendwelche Ausreden zu finden. Die gibt’s nicht! Hätt ich mir die Zeit nehmen wollen hätte ich mir sie irgendwie genommen. Hab ich aber nicht, weil ich meine Auszeiten eher daraus bestehen mich einfach abends mal hinzusetzen und ganz ohne jede Ablenkung einen Film zu schauen. Auch wenn ich manchmal währenddessen mir vornehm was anderes nebenbei zu machen. Kann ich aber nicht gut weil ich absolut nicht Multitasking fähig bin. Das gute ist ich fokussier mich zum Glück dann komplett auf den Film und schau nicht auf mein Handy um den Moment zu genießen und nicht andersrum. Das ist meine Auszeit um mich zu regenerieren. Und die hab ich mir viel zu lange nicht genommen! Ich hab mein persönliches Tagebuch, welches ich seit dem Beginn unserer Reise auf englisch schreibe vernachlässigt, weil mein Fokus auf den Uniprojekten und vor allem auch in Zeit mit den ganzen Leuten hier zu verbringen und zu genießen lag. Und ja deswegen blieb hierfür neben Instagram keine Zeit mehr. Das ist gute ist, mein Semester ist rum und ich hab gerade wiederentdeckt wie viel Spaß mir das schreiben hier macht! Fühlt sich gut an wieder zurück zu sein!

Mein Socken Counter ist mittlerweile bei 24 Paar fancy Socken. Ich brauch glaub ich bald nen eigenen Koffer, allein nur für die Socken! Einer der größten Fehler war es überhaupt erst so viele hier hin mitzunehmen. Das hier sollten alle sein... 

Wir sind vor kurzem von unserem größtem Roadtrip zurückgekommen. Nachdem wir die Pläne ein paar Mal umgeschmissen haben, haben Grace und Jedd uns auf die Idee gebracht unseren Roadtrip nach New Orleans zu verlegen, was wir dann auch so gemacht haben. 

Und es fühlt sich richtig gut an wieder zurück in Lawrence zu sein! Ich weiß gar nicht wie sehr ich das vermissen werde, wenn ich erstmal wirklich weg bin und nicht nur zehn Tage auf nem Roadtrip... Es war super schön mal länger aus Lawrence rauszukommen, aber umso schöner war es jetzt wieder hierher zurückzukommen!

Ich bin jetzt schon eine ganze Woche wieder zurück und hab mich für meine restlichen Wochen noch hier bin in einem Langzeit Airbnb eingemietet. Ich hab nen guten Schnapper gemacht und nen Rabatt von um die 50% bekommen. Normalerweise sind die Airbnb’s in Lawrence für einzelne Tage verdammt teuer. Neben New Orleans definitiv das teuerste was ich bisher so gesehen hab.

Anfangs dieser Woche hab ich mich noch um ein paar organisatorische Sachen gekümmert. Ich hab meine Visums Verlängerung fertig gemacht und abgeschickt, mich um mein Flugticket für nach Hause gekümmert und noch einige andere kleinere Sachen. Also es ist jz offiziell. Ich werde Mitte Februar wieder da landen wo die große Reise angefangen hat!

Unser Semester in Trier geht erst Mitte April nach Ostern wieder los. Also hab ich noch etwas Zeit um so viel wie geht hier mitzunehmen. Wenn ich zurück komme, hab ich dann sogut wie alle Reserven aufgebraucht und muss erstmal wieder bis die Uni anfängt arbeiten. Ich hab’s mir auch nicht groß anders vorgestellt und war von Anfang an so ziemlich darauf eingestellt! Wenn ich schonmal hier bin... 😌😇

An der KU ging es am Dienstag schon wieder los mit dem Spring Semester. Echt verrückt, die sind hier Mitte Mai schon wieder fertig. Da fangen wir in Trier gerade mal so richtig an. Das coole dabei ist aber, dass die Leute hier ne super lange summer break haben. Die dann gute drei Monate bis Ende August andauert. Was verdammt cool ist, da du dann den ganzen Sommer komplett nutzen kannst und nicht wie wir daheim den ganzen Sommer durch immer am büffeln bist.

Und ja, das was ich eigentlich erzählen wollte, damit hab ich noch gar nicht angefangen! Also let’s go 😊...

Letztes Wochenende war Parents weekend! Freitag Abend sind die ersten Eltern eingeflogen um Samstag rechtzeitig zu dem Spiel da zu sein. Es ging nämlich schon relativ früh los. 1:00 Uhr mittags war tip-off und wir haben uns um 10:45 Uhr schon vor unserer Basketball Arena getroffen. Wegen dem Campen mussten wir diesmal super früh da sein. Und diesmal hat es sich wirklich ausgezahlt! Wir wurden als Gruppe 8 ausgelost und sind am Ende noch auf Platz 1 aufgestiegen. Ich war baff als ich aufs Handy geschaut und Braden’s Nachricht auf GroupMe gesehen hab’, dass wir Gruppe 1 sind. Normal gibt es beim Camping um die 70-90 Campinggruppen, je nachdem welches Spiel es ist.

Bevor ich im letzten Sommer hier rüber in die Staaten geflogen bin, hat Grace mir zum ersten Mal von dem Camping für die Basketballspiele erzählt... Und dass ich das unbedingt einmal mitgemacht haben muss. Ich war dann nur so, Camping? Für en Basketballspiel...? 🤨 Jaaa, es ist zwar nicht mit Übernachtung, Zelt und so weiter aber wär auch echt gar nicht so abwegig. Da komm ich gleich zu und erklär es.

Das Camping für das West Virginia game, war diesmal nur 4h lang, weil es noch in der winter break war. In der Regel geht das auch mal eine ganze Woche von Montag-Freitag von morgens 6-22 Uhr. Da würd sich bei uns daheim keiner auch nur einen Tag so lange dafür hinsetzen. Und dass nur nur um bessere Plätze in der Basketballarena zu bekommen. Das ist wirklich der einzige Grund. Auch wenn sich gute Plätze auf jeden Fall lohnen! Da es für die Student Section keine feste Platzverteilung gibt, funktioniert das ganze nach dem first come first serve Prinzip.

Das Camping funktioniert so:

Am Anfang gibt es eine Lotterie, in der ausgelost wird welche Camping Gruppe welchen Platz bekommt. Pro 5 Personen gibt es ein Los. Die niedrigste Gruppennummer aus den Losen wird dann für die ganze Camping Gruppe genommen. Je niedriger die Zahl ist desto besser.

Gruppe 1 darf am gameday als erstes rein, dann Gruppe 2, dann 3 und so weiter... Solange das Camping stattfindet, muss zu jeder Zeit immer eine Person aus jeder Gruppe vor Ort in der Basketball Arena sein um den Platz zu sichern! Andernfalls wirst du runtergestuft. Jeder übernimmt dann in der Regel mindestens eine Schicht die eine Stunde dauert.

Das Camping an sich einfach nur dort sitzen und den Platz sichern. Manche Leuten bringen einen Schlafsack und Decken mit, die dann noch weiterschlafen wenn es denen zu früh ist. Andere bringen Campingstühle oder sogar ganze Beerpong Tische mit! Gibt hier alles. Es wird also nie langweilig und die Zeit geht immer super schnell rum.

Erste Gruppe die an einem Gameday in die Arena rein darf. Normal gibt es so um die 70-90 Campinggruppen. Was die Chancen Gruppe 1 zu werden super klein macht. Nur für dieses Spiel gab es sehr wenig. So um die 15 Gruppen, da es noch in der Winterbreak war und die meisten Leute erst das Wochenende wieder in Lawrence eingeflogen sind.

Das war einfach nur verrückt! Ich hätt niemals gedacht, dass ich irgendwann mal in den vordersten Reihen sitzen würde. Und dass wir als aller allererste an einem Gameday ins Allen Fieldhouse reinkommen.

Auch wenn man schon zwei Stunden vor tip-off in der Halle drin ist, vergeht diese Zeit unfassbar schnell. Durch das Warm-up, die ganzen verschieden Traditionen der KU, der Nationalhymne usw. gehen die zwei Stunden ruckzuck rum.

Wir haben übrigens vor zwei Wochen Nachwuchs aus Trier bekommen. Für Tim war es das erste Mal im Allen Fieldhouse und das erste Basketballspiel. Wir füllen die KU gut mit unseren Studis. Im nächsten Fall Semester kommt dann auch schon Jasmin rüber und mal schauen wie das ganze noch weiter geht.  

Das Spiel an sich war auch einfach nur der hamma! Ich hab keine Worte um zu beschreiben wie cool es war in den front rows zu sitzen. Zur Halbzeit war der Score super knapp. Ab der zweiten Halbzeit hat unser Team Western Virginia dann richtig an die Wand gespielt und mit Abstand gewonnen! Ich hab’s geschafft ein Bild mit Baby Jay zu bekommen und wir haben es ins Fernsehen geschafft haha! 

Taylors Schwester Jordan hat mit uns ganz ganz vorne gesessen.

Danach ging es dann erstmal wieder durch den eiskalten Schnee mit dem Bus zurück ins Apartment. Wir hatten auch erst so halb 4 rum. Abends um 8 Uhr ging es dann bei Jedd und Braden’s house mit der Party mit allen Eltern zusammen weiter!

Es war so iconic! Ich lieb’s und ich werd’s auch richtig vermissen wenn ich wieder zurück bin. Wir müssen sowas daheim auf jeden Fall einführen. Es macht viel zu viel Spaß mit den ganzen Eltern zu feiern. Jeder von den Eltern spielt auch alle Trinkspiele mit, egal ob es Flip Cup oder Rage Cage ist. Wir haben daheim echt nichts vergleichbares. Ich weiß nicht ob unsere Eltern das daheim mit machen würden, wär aber richtig richtig cool!

Die Simpsons, Bryce’s family, war auch wieder in der Stadt 🥳...

Und ich hab Grace’s family zum ersten Mal vor Ort gesehen! 😊

Kurz vor Mitternacht sind wir dann noch ins Bull’s um den Geburtstag von Braden’s Cousine Macey zu feiern! Im Bull’s haben wir draußen dann noch witzigerweise Luke getroffen! 

Als wir zurück waren haben wir dann noch bei Jedd, Braden und Bryce im Haus auf unsere Uber gewartet. Bei Lyft war glaub ich kein einziger Fahrer mehr unterwegs. Ein richtig richtig cooler Tag den ich nie vergessen werde.

3 takeaways from No. 3 Kansas’ thrilling 64-61 upset of No. 1 Baylor

We may have seen college basketball’s game of the year so far Saturday afternoon in Waco.

In what may have been the best overall game of the 2019-20 college basketball season to date, No. 3 Kansas toppled No. 1 Baylor, 64-61, Saturday afternoon in Waco. The win was sweet revenge for a Jayhawk team that lost to the Bears at home by 12 on Jan. 11.

For Baylor, the loss was more than just their first setback since the opening week of the season. The Bears lost, at least temporarily, the inside track to both an outright Big 12 regular season title and the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament.

Baylor and Kansas now sit tied atop the Big 12 standings with identical league records of 13-1. Both also seem like more than safe bets to grace the top line when the big bracket is unveiled in three Sundays. The Jayhawks should be fairly heavy favorites in each of their final four regular season games, while the Bears will a face a monster test at West Virginia in its regular season finale.

Before we shift our focus to any of that, let’s take a second to look back at the three biggest takeaways from a tremendous game Saturday afternoon in Waco.

1. Udoka Azubuike exploited Baylor’s biggest weakness

For as good as Baylor is defensively — No. 3 in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency — the Bears are unquestionably undersized on the interior. Scott Drew starts four guards, and his only true reliable post presence is 6’9 senior forward Freddie Gillespie. That’s not a major problem against 95 percent of the teams in the country. Against a member of the other five percent that has a 7’1, 270-pound monster manning the middle, well, it’s a little bit different.

This was Udoka Azubuike’s game from start to finish. Double teams made no difference, and neither did Baylor’s attempts to attack the big man on the other end of the floor and get him in foul trouble. When the dust had settled, Azubuike had scored 23 points, grabbed 19 rebounds, and (probably) done irreparable damage to both of the rims inside the Ferrell Center. Of his 11 made field goals, nine were dunks.

In the first game between these two, Baylor limited Azubuike to six points on just six shots by fronting the post and always having a second defender within arm’s length of the big man. Kansas combated this on Saturday by creating opportunities for Azubuike not through traditional post ups, but off of high ball screens and feeds from driving guards.

Azubuike also created his own opportunities, scoring on four of the five offensive rebounds he was able to pull down.

The common thread in both of Baylor’s losses now has been the lack of an answer for a talented opposing big man or big men. In the Bears’ November loss to Washington, the highly-skilled freshman duo of 6’9 Isaiah Stewart and 6’9 Jaden McDaniels combined for 33 points and 15 rebounds.

Again, the vast majority of teams Baylor will run into between now and whenever its season ends won’t present this type of problem. But if the Bears want to win six games over three weeks in the NCAA tournament, it’s more likely than not that they’re going to have to find a way to beat at least one of those few teams that does.

2. Kansas is going to be everyone’s pick to win the national championship

Despite owning the longest winning streak in the history of the Big 12 (23 games), Baylor has been a team that, for weeks now, the basketball world has seemed desperate to find fault with. Finally taking a loss and having it happen on its home floor should do the trick.

Of the teams that would be the four No. 1 seeds if the tournament began today, Kansas is the only one that has previously won a national championship. It also probably has the two most recognizable names out of any roster from that quartet in Azubuike and point guard Devon Dotson. For these reasons as well as the simpler fact that anyone with functioning eyes can see that the team is awesome, expect the Jayhawks to be the public’s overwhelming pick to cut down the nets after the full bracket is released on Selection Sunday.

The other thing that helped Kansas’ cause in this department is that it proved on Saturday that it doesn’t need to shoot the ball all that well to take down one of the best teams in the country. Everyone pointed to KU’s 4-of-15 three-point shooting and 14 turnovers as the factors that doomed them in the first meeting against Baylor and the areas that had to be improved for Bill Self’s team to have any shot in round two. The Jayhawks won on Saturday despite turning the ball over 12 times and making only three of their 13 attempts from beyond the arc.

Because of the way it defends, because of the way its guards can get to the basket, and because it has Udoka Azubuike, Kansas can survive a woeful outside shooting game against a quality opponent. That just isn’t the case for pretty much any other team in the sport.

3. The nation demands a rubber match

The Big 12 is, as always, one of the deepest conferences in college basketball. With that being the case, it wouldn’t be overly shocking if Kansas or Baylor (or both) lost before the championship game of the Big 12 tournament. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be extremely disappointing for the rest of the college hoops world.

Kansas and Baylor currently sit at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, on Ken Pom. There’s a very solid chance that they’re going to tie for the Big 12 regular season title with matching 17-1 records and a win over the other on its home floor. If that’s the case, they’ll both head to Kansas City as a virtual lock to be a No. 1 seed in the Big Dance. It could also set up a situation where the Big 12 championship game could decide not only the conference’s current king, but the NCAA tournament’s overall No. 1 seed.

We must have a round three.

Snoop Dogg to perform at KU’s basketball season kickoff party

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The University of Kansas is looking forward to the start of basketball season, and they’re getting Snoop Dogg to help them kick it off.

The famous rap artist is set to headline the 35th annual Late Night in the Phog, an event that celebrates the start of the season, according to KUSports.com.

KU announced the performance on its social media channels Friday, Sept. 27, with a video featuring KU men’s basketball coach Bill Self.

Snoop Dogg is the latest artist to get the gig in a line of famous musicians that have performed there over the past few years according to the website. Rapper 2 Chainz performed at Late Night in 2018, Lil Yachty performed in 2017 and Tech N9ne performed in 2016.

The event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4
