Warning, tiny bit of dark content near the end. But like, it's death note sooo...

Characters:

Rikki = Light

Emma = L

Cleo = Misa

Lewis = Matsuda

Miriam = Kiyomi

Zane = Mikami

Kim = Sayu

Elliot = Near, Mello, Matt

Miss Chatham = Ryuk

Now, despite character assignments I'm still giving cannon siblings. So Sayu is still Light's little sister, the wammy boys are L's etc. The roles are based off of personality, so not everything fits and I'll move things around. Like yeah, Ryuk is Chatham because him as a weird old ocean man with ominous advice is hysterical.

Plot:

Starts of pretty similar, will diverge.

Light and Misa go to high school at the Gold Coast, Australia. Light's mother is a marine biologist that works at a nearby institute, while his father still works in Japan as the chief of the NPA.

Misa lives there with her parents, and is close with Light. Ie, she follows him around and he puts up with her. She is also good friends with Matsuda, who studies with her occasionally.

L is the new transfer kid, who Light doesn't like because he keeps on challenging his intellect. Plus he's weird.

So of course Light gets put in a group biology project with him, along with Misa.

While brainstorming where to research, L asks about Mako Island. Light says the Island and the waters around it are too dangerous. L (in essence) calls him chicken.

That weekend, the two, and an unwilling Misa, take Sachiko's boat out to Mako. And the gas tank leaks. So, they row the short rest of the way to Mako.

Of course, there's no phone service, and no one will look for them until after the weekend. Light and L bicker on the beach until Misa makes them go setup camp on the shore, then look for higher ground to try and get reception.

While looking, Misa falls in a hole. L goes in to help her. Light falls into trying to lend them the rope. Stuck down there, they look for an exit, and find the moon pool.

After oooing and aweing, they figure out the pool is connected to the ocean due to tidal rings. They plan to swim out after L scopes it out. Problem, Misa can't swim.

But after encouraging words and promises to help her, they all get in the pool as the full moon rises over the mouth of the volcano.

Weird bubbles happen.

But they ignore it, swimming out to the ocean and back to their camp near shore, getting dry and going to sleep.

The next morning they go into the shallow water to look for samples for their project since they have nothing else to do.

And they all turn into fish.

They freak, Misa screams, it's a mess. They all crawl onto shore to try and figure this out, and as soon as they're dry, they turn back to normal.

Misa refuses to touch water again. L needs time to process what just happened. But Light, the little getter he is, goes for a swim.

And he loves it, it's the most awesome swimming experience he's ever had. Way better than swimming as a clumsy human. He convinces L, then Misa, and after they all start to get used to their tails, they're having the time of their lives.

Now, they can push the boat back to the mainland, and say that "luckily" the gas tank leaked right as they were getting back.

They get what they need for the project, and like the dorky 16 year olds they are, swear a pact to never tell anyone about this.

(Touta finds out a week later when Misa tried to go to a pool party.)

Miscellaneous/Plot Points

Misa shows up at school the following day in total beach girl aesthetic, including beach curls, shell/pearl jewelry, flowy clothes and wedges. L nearly smacks her upside the head. Light does.

They turn the moon pool into their own little hangout! Misa gets them all to buy fairy lights, tapestries, blankets, pillows, and even shelves for all of their stuff, along with a crap ton of batteries for the lights. It turns out surprisingly cozy.

They all hang out a lot for obvious reasons, which puts a chip in Kiyomi and Teru's shoulder. They've tried to be close to Light to no avail, but suddenly this L guy, and Misa who is now more than tolerated, are suddenly thick as thieves with him! They get bitchy with the two, especially L.

Misa made them all fishing net pouch-belts to put cool things they find during swims in.

The pool starts to look like a little treasure trove, since there is a LOT of cool stuff to find and the bottom of the ocean.

With the sheer amount of pearls and mother of pearl they find, Light starts to make accessories out of it. Misa is overjoyed and accepts the items with joy. L likes to watch Light tinker. Light doesn't mind him there.

The three, especially Light develop a superiority complex in regards to other people. It's based in insecurity about not being human anymore, but they do feel superior because of their powers.

L goes research nuts. A large portion of the moon pool wall looks like a mermaid conspiracy board, he wants to find any possible explanation. Light helps where he can, impressed with L's brain.

L was the first to find his powers, when he froze Kiyomi and Mikami to a wet sidewalk. Next was Light, after he boiled his annoying history teachers coffee all over his desk. Misa found her power a few days after, accidentally flooding her bathroom when she tried to bath.

The first full moon was... not good. Ryuk randomly showed up at the beach to warn Light, who discarded his words as meaningless blabbering. The three of them went moon crazy, and swam in the ocean until Misa got caught in an illegal fishing boat net.

The next morning, the boat was found sunken and destroyed, the charred and frozen bodies of the small were found with it.

None of them swam for three days.

But uh, yeah! They're a little pod, very protective of eachother :)

Misa likes to find starfish that match their hair colours and stick them on the boys' hair. They don't come off :)

It's the wammy boys that notice something up (they including Sayu are 10 btw) and they end up finding some of L's research. Watari just said it was probably a hobby when they showed him, but when they go to Sayu and they find a type of shell that is only found at diving depth in Light's room, they begin to think their theory of mermaids is warranted.

The trio is annoyed by the snoopyness, and now that they were technically murderers there was another level of urgency to keep this secret.

Unfortunately, mermaid hunters and scientists do start showing up, as "sitings" have increased due to underwater cameras.

Stakes rise and the three begin to ponder the benefits of staying. And the risks of going.

They start sabotaging. Finding the groups, their plans and evidence under the guise of mermaid enthusiasts. It works mostly, except for one group that keeps coming back. L finds himself impressed with how easily Light can manipulate them.

The three start going farther away during swims, able to go to places like Fiji or the Mediterranean in under an hour due to their extraordinary tails.

There is relationship drama. Misa is realizing her crush on Light is going no where, and he and L have started to become closer. Eventually they get over it, but lawlight is end game.

Kiyomi's jealousy deflates over time, and she begins to appreciate Misa without Light clouding her mind ;)

summary. nishimura riki despised love, so why the hell was his heart beating so fast around you?

If anyone were to ask Nishimura Riki what he thought of love, he’d say it was pointless and quite frankly — a joke.

Nishimura Riki did not believe in love. He didn’t believe in going on multiple silly little dates just to maybe, maybe ask out the person for them to maybe say yes.

He hated the concept of dating. He hated the concept of love.

“What’re you thinking about?” Sim Jaeyun, one of Riki’s closest and really only friend, swung his arms over the much taller boy. “How to take over the world and rule with an iron fist?”

Riki scoffs at that, flicking Jaeyun in the head. “No. But if I were to take over the world, I’d kill you first.”

Jaeyun pretends he’s offended by bringing a hand over his chest, leaning forward to make it more believable that Riki’s words truly hurt his heart.

“How could you say that? I’m your only friend!”

You watch from the distance, watching Riki’s eyes crinkle from both annoyance and amusement, watching as his hands come to each side of Jaeyun’s body, tickling the older boy with no mercy.

It’s in moments like this that you realize Nishimura Riki is just a teenage boy, and that maybe a teenage boy wasn’t the love of your life after all.

“What are you thinking about?” It was Asakura Jo’s voice that snapped you out of your thought. “Math equations, I hope. Your SATs are soon.”

“Shut up.” You shriek, swatting Jo’s face away from yours.

“I’ll never see what you see in him,” he snickers. “But young love, right?”

“Jo, you are one year older than us. One.” You roll your eyes.

“That’s one more year of love experience than you have.” Jo shrugs his shoulders. “Whatever though, your boyfriend looks mad, I’m gonna go.”

Before you can deny that Riki was your boyfriend, Jo’s already leaving, engaged in a new conversation with Kyomi.

“What was that?” A glaring Nishimura Riki already makes you feel annoyed. He could be an asshole when he was in a mood.

“I was talking to Jo. You know, my SAT tutor.”

“Yeah yeah,” Riki waves your words off. “I still don’t know why your mom hired him. I’m so much better.”

“Riki, I love you but you’re terrible at math and English.” You say.

“Oh, you love me?” He teases you by softly nudging you with his side. “L/N Y/N loves me.”

“Yah Nishimura, I will kill you.”

He scoffs, pretending to surrender. “I’m sorry, forgive me your highness.”

You roll your eyes at his sarcasm, linking your arms with his as you two make way to the vending machines.

“You gotta stop doing that.” Riki says, although his tone doesn’t sound like he’s serious at all. “People might think we’re dating if you link arms with me.”

“Oh really?” You put in a few coins, pressing number 36, which was a snickers ice cream bar. “Yah Riki! Give that back!”

It’s too late though — Riki’s already taken a bite out of your ice cream, almost choking on it when you smack his shoulder.

“Okay sorry!” He laughs, a noise that you’ve grown to love despite your love and hate relationship towards the Japanese boy. “Here, I only took a small bite.”

Your eyes widen when he shoves the bar towards your mouth, waiting for you to open so he could feed you.

“This is gross.” Jaeyun, Kiyomi, and Jo all watch from a distance, shaking their heads at one another. “Not a couple my ass.”

As soon as Riki and you are done with school for the day, his instincts instantly go for your school bag, swinging it over his shoulder despite how heavy it was.

“Yah,” he says, fingers coming down to mess with your ponytail. “This bag is so heavy, no wonder you’re so short.”

Your cheeks puff out and you make a halt, which almost has Nishimura Riki tumbling over you since he hovered above you.

“You’re crazy!” You say, pushing him backwards. “I don’t know how your sisters deal with you everyday.”

“They love me.” He defends himself.

He drops you off at your house, bidding a quick goodbye to your grandmother before dashing back to his house.

“Geez, did you run a marathon or something?” Riki’s older sister says, giving a look of disgust towards her brother.

“No.” He places one of his hands against his chest, eyes widening when he realizes how much his heart is beating. “I don’t like it.”

“You don’t like what?” His sister is super annoyed now, feet tapping against the floor tiles.

“This feeling.” Riki’s mouth goes dry, and his first thought is that he needs water. He really really needs water.

His long legs march themselves to the kitchen, flimsy arms clumsily reaching for a cup.

“Seriously, you’re acting weirder than usual.” His sister says from the living room.

“Mind your own business!”

Nishimura Riki was screwed. He was sure of it. Although he swore that he’d never get serious with you, he feels the butterflies in his stomach and his heart beating irregularly. He’s so screwed.

He thought that pushing you away the week before would be a good idea. When you had asked the stupid question of were you and Riki soulmates in another universe, he felt speechless.

He didn’t believe in soulmates, much less another universe.

No. He had replied with. We aren’t even soulmates in this one.

He knew he was an asshole, and it was an asshole move on his part. But he couldn’t help it, there was no way Nishimura Riki would let love tie him down. There was no way. He simply refused.

“I hate her.” Riki grumbles the next morning as he’s eating breakfast with Jaeyun.

“You hate Y/N?” Jaeyun tries to stop himself from laughing — because it’s ridiculous, really. He knew his best friend by heart, if anything, Riki was inlove with you.

“I hate Y/N, I hate the way she laughs, I hate the way I can easily tower over her, I hated her stupid haircut from last month. I hate her.”

Jaeyun thinks it’s pathetic that Riki is trying so hard to convince himself it’s not love he’s feeling, but hate. Clearly the Japanese boy had issues.

“I heard Jo’s gonna ask her out.” Jaeyun’s mouth moves quicker than he can stop it.

“What?”

Before Jaeyun could say anything else, Riki’s already leaving in a panic, his priority was finding you.

“Hey!” He yells as he spots your figure heading into the school. He grabs you by your arms effortlessly, your surprised yelp only adding to the list of what Riki claims he “hates”.

“Is it true?”

“What is?” You say exasperated, arms crossed over your chest. “Why do you always ask me the broadest questions Nishimura?”

“Is Jo gonna ask you out?”

You automatically choke on your spit, not expecting such a ridiculous question. “What?!”

You let out a giggle, which doesn’t help Riki who’s already flushing with red.

“No! What the hell!” You say, looking directly into the boy’s eyes. “He’s my tutor for God sakes! I’ve told you like a billion times.”

“Oh.” Riki bites the inside of his cheek, now aware that Jaeyun had lied straight from his mouth.

“Why?” You get closer to Riki, your head almost bumping into his chest. “It wouldn’t be a problem if he asked me, would it?”

“It would!” Riki clasps his hands over his mouth, already realizing he’s said too much.

You smirk at his unsuccessful attempt to try and conceal his emotions because despite the nonchalant persona Nishimura Riki so desperately tries to keep up, you can see right through it.

“Oh would it?” You tease. “Why?”

“Because..” Riki pauses, biting his lip as he tries to think of what to say. “Because I don’t want you to go out with him.”

“I think Jo and I make a great couple, don’t you?”

Riki rolls his eyes, both hands coming down to grip your shoulders. “No.”

“Why not?”

You keep pushing the boy because you know sooner or later he’ll break. He wasn’t very good at containing his obvious jealously.

“Because you’ll look better with me!”

Ah, there it was. Nishimura Riki has finally broke.

“Hmm,” you say, lips curving into a teasing smile as you watch Riki’s face turn bright red in embarrassment. “Don’t worry Nishimura, it’s you I like, not him.”

Riki doesn’t let you say anything else before he connects his lips with yours. He ignores the blaring alarms in his head telling him that it was stupid to fall inlove, because he had already fallen too deeply with you.

with a frown on your face, you followed your parents around like puppy with their master. it had been almost an hour that they had been going on and on about politics and giving their suggestions like that would change a thing.

you were accompanying them to an event for launch of new project for someone you didn’t knew and didn’t care to know about. you were planning to spend some quality time alone and relax in you room but as soon as you returned home from school, you mom dropped the news about them attending an event and for you to come with them.

you of course refused at first but then she started telling you about how events like these will help you make connections and you’ll learn a thing or two about business in real life.

when you were sure that she is not gonna leave for event without you, you just gave up and followed them. 

“well it was very nice catching you with you, mr. kiyomi.” your dad said to another man around his own age.

finally. “please join us for lunch or dinner with us sometimes.” he bowed to your parents as they did the same. 

once you were left alone with you parents, you join in, “can we go grab something to eat?”

“you should have had some snacks before we left y/n.” you mom replied to you.

“well i should have but didn’t have time, sorry about that. can we get something to eat now?” 

“politely now.” your dad warned you like they didn’t drop the news last moment and told you to get ready quickly from an hour before the event.

you scoffed and looked away from them and went through your phone again.

“mr. and mrs. l/n, good to see you.” you looked up to see another couple approach your parents with a smile on their faces.

your parents exchanged a quick greeting with them when their attention came to you, “oh my is she your daughter?” the lady asked looking at you.

you put your phone away and nod with a smile, “yes, hello. pleasure to meet you.” you say politely with a little bow of your head.

"she has grown up so fast.” she smile at you and you maintained you smile as you looked at your mother.

“where is your son by the way? i haven’t seen him in like forever.” you mom asked the lady.

“oh you definitely should meet him. he is a fine young man.” you dad said and look a sip of his drink.

the man laughed and looked around, soon enough spotting the man he was searching for, he called out, “reo, come here.” you looked at the person he called for and saw a boy of around your age with purple hair in a nice suit coming towards you all with a small smile on his face.

he came and stood in between his parents, “hello mr. and mrs. l/n, nice seeing you.” he bowed a little and he gave you ‘prince charming’ vibes.

your parents said some things to him like how good he was looking and his studies and him politely giving them replies.

“oh you’re in the same grade as y/n.” your mom said and you were suddenly the center of attention in the group.

“aw that’s really nice. you both should get to know each other.” the lady, his mom said with excitement.

you looked at your mom to see her telling you to introduce yourself to him with her eyes, “ah.. hi?” you cleared your throat, “i’m y/n, nice to meet you.” you said calmly despite all the sudden attention making you nervous.

he smile sweetly and introduced himself as reo. pretty name for pretty boy.

soon the parents went back to their own conversation, talking business while you were left out again and even hungrier than before. you noticed that reo was now beside you, his father moving to go beside your own. 

you both stood there in silence. you were not good with starting a conversation and he wasn’t saying anything, you didn’t mind though. what you did mind was your hunger growing by every second and it was starting to make your mood bad.

“ugh this is so boring.” you mumbled to yourself and fold your arms in front of your chest.

“i know right and i skipped plans with my friends for this.” reo replied from besides you, you were surprised by his sudden reply but appreciated it either way. “anything special today?”

“nah just enjoying the monthly test getting over with i guess.” he turned to you, “had any plans tonight?”

“no.. not really. nothing special just relaxing.” you sighed thinking about the things you’d be doing if you were at home.

he closed his eyes and shook his head, “i can’t wait for this to be over.”

“same. i might just run away from here.” you straighten your back and check time on your phone. 20: 26.

“let’s do it.” reo said with excitement in his voice and you look at him. he had a huge smile on his face, you on the other hand were confused by what he said, “what?”

“let’s run aways from this boring event.” 

“w-what? no. we can’t leave this place without our parents.” you could not get out through the security who you knew noticed you since there weren’t just a couple of parents who brought their kid to the event.

“i know. that’s why i’m saying to run away, just like you said.”

“i.. was kidding when i said that. i didn’t think you’d actually take it seriously and agree to it.” you shook your head.

“so you wanna stay here?” he asked like he was teasing you. you frowned, “of course not you dumbass. why would you ask me something that?”

a mischievous smile played at his lips, “so let’s get out of here.”

you paused and thought for a while. what’s the worst that could even happen? nothing really.

a smile formed on your lips as well, “let’s go.” anyone could know that you were excited at the idea from your voice. “let me deal with them?”

you asked referring to both your parents and he quickly nodded. you take a few step towards them, “umm excuse me?” they stopped their talk and looked at you, and reo who was behind you.

“yes darling?” your mom replied, for you to continue, “sorry to disturb but like i said before mom, i am hungry and i am going to get dinner.” 

“why would you have dinner alone? wait for a while so we can join you as well.” you dad said to which reo replied, “oh i’m quite hungry myself so i shall join her.”

your moms had a smile at their lips, “looks like they’re getting along just fine.” his mom said with a sweet smile.

“oh yes, we..” you looked at reo, “have, quite a lot in common it seems.”

“that’s great to hear. go on ahead we will join you both later.” his father said as they went back to their talks.

you both turn around and walk away from the group, “now how do we get outta here?” you asked reo who was walking a step ahead of you to lead you out the main hall. 

“i have a perfect thing in my mind.” he looked back for not more than a second to flash you his smile.

you didn’t know the guy but you hoped he is as good on the inside as he looks on the outside. if not, you might just up dead.

he led you behind the main hall and there was a balcony from where o you could get the view of beautiful garden below.

“come on let’s go.” he walked ahead of you and you noticed stairs leading down in the garden. on reaching the garden, you walked through the stone paveway and it ended with a small pond with some statue in the middle.

reo looked around to see if anyone was around. there was a stone wall with texture, which could be easier to climb up. he turned to you, “i’m gonna climb first and wait there,” he said pointing to the top of the wall, “then you can see how i do it and get up, is it okay?”

“yes don’t worry i can climb a wall.” you assured him and he smiled, “great then. i’m going ‘kay?”

“yeah yeah just go ahead reo.” shaking the thoughts away, you watched as reo climble up and sat on the top of the wall to look down on you, “come on up y/n.” the first time you said each other’s name and call yourself weird but his name was felt so good to say out loud plus hearing your own name come out of his lips made you like your name a lot.

you weren’t so inexperienced in climbing walls so you reached the top to join reo in very little time, “wow y/n, you’re really good at this.” he let out a laugh and jumped on the other side.

straightening himself up, he looked up at you and waved his hand, signalling you to jump. he extended his arms to catch you, in case. “right!” you jump to join him, excited when you didn’t land on your butt. his body moved on it’s own and were holding onto your arms, “this might just be my hidden talent.” you smiled at him and he laughed at your words.

“where will you use your talent hmm?” he asked as you both started walking away, not noticing his hands still holding yours.

“who knows maybe i will have to run away some other time as well?” you both kept talking about random stuffs and just getting to know each other. he was easy to talk to so you didn’t run out of things to say to him.

soon, you reached a convenience store and reo pushed the door open as you both entered and were greeted by the young lady sitting in the counter. you smiled at her and walked to the snack aisle.

“what’s your favourite?” he asked you as he himself grabbed a bag of chips and showed it to you, “do you like this one?”

“i like anything as long as it’s tasty.” you grabbed another flavor of the same type of chips reo got for diversity. “wait- lemme grab a bigger bag,” you put the on in your hand back and garbed a bigger one, “i literally haven’t had anything since lunch.”

you walked ahead and tugged his hand to follow you. then it suddenly hit you that you were holding his hands. you weren’t sure since when you were but you were thinking about if he has noticed it and if it would seem rude to let go now.

so instead you took some fast steps and reached the fridge, “what do you want?” you asked him as you let go of his hand as casually as you could to open the fridge door.

you grabbed his drink and one for yourself as he moved to another asile and grabbed some chocolate bars. you walk to the counter with him following behind you, “do you think we need some more?” he asked and you look back at him with disbelieve, “look how much food we are buying.”

he tilted his head at you, “didn’t you say you were hungry?” 

you chuckle, “don’t worry this much is enough.” you continue you walk looking ahead, “beside if we need more, which i do not think we do, we can always come back and grab some more.” 

on reaching the counter, you put all the snacks in your hands on the counter and your partner of the night did the same. you bickered a little with him about who’s gonna pay and after you realized the lady was laughing to herself looking at you two, you got embarrassed and let him pay.

grabbing the bag with goodies, reo carrying the bag with the goodies, you both walked to the small park near by to enjoy you dinner for the night.

thankfully it hadn’t rained so the ground wasn’t wet. you sat on the grass, under a tree, near a light so you could see better and enjoyed the rest of the night with reo until your parents called.

they sounded furious on the call so you both hurried back but didn’t care about your parents as you were exchanging number and socials to keep in touch. 

“let’s do this again.” he winked at you and went to where his parents had parked and you did the same.

you were so not gonna let him pay the next time.

6. My least favorite ship of them

Probably with Ryuk. I just don't like human x Shinigami ships, haha.

I also don't ship Light with any women, but I at least think his canon relationships are interesting. So seeing him with Misa or Kiyomi doesn't bother me per se.

26. When do you think they were being "themselves" the most?

He had a few raw moments. I think he generally can be himself around Ryuk. But we also saw a different, unfiltered version of him when he, without his memories, tried to convince L he's innocent, or when he thought Soichiro was going to kill him. Also when he punched L, haha.

And then there's, of course, his Kira speech at Yellow Box. I think he was completely honest there, even thought he used his monologue as a distraction.
