Dirty Deeds From A Devious Son Of A Bitch

Marcus didn't like being called Marcus. He liked Mark, Marky, even Mercutio on occasion, but it was Marcus that he hated. Marcus reminded him of all the twisted dark memories, arrogant teachers, and run-ins with the law he had back in Delaware. He had come to Los Angeles to forget all that. No job, no plan, just the winnings from a lucky break on a fast horse, and a desire to run away from it all. He had found the spare bedroom of a sweet old lady that he could rent out, but wasn't sure how long his money could last. When he started looking for work, he was surprised by the surprised of employers that he wasn't an actor. The more he got to know people, the more he felt like a man without a country. He wasn't an artist, a writer, a director, or any of the part-time side-hustles that so many of his neighbors were obsessed with. Finally he lucked out as an assistant to an assistant for some antiques collector in the Hollywood Hills. She, the antiques collector, would spend her money on online auctions, and then find clever ways of reselling for a higher value. One of her tricks was to buy a basketball jersey, then sleep in it without wearing deodorant. The scent of musk and pit stains fooled buyers into thinking it was worn by the legend whose number was on it. Mark would help with errands, which wasn't hard, but wasn't profitable either. The barely minimum wage job barely covered expenses, and he was racking up credit card debt in order to stay afloat. The one good thing that the job allowed was introductions to the Los Angeles investor class. Not everyone he met was wealthy, most were other dreamers and schemers waiting for their next big whale of a break. However, he was put in the sight lines of people who, whether through family or luck, they had gotten enough dough to live comfortably in one of the most expensive cities in the world. They ranged from Chinese real estate moguls, Ukrainian gas merchants, PR executives, Oscar winners, bicoastal bipolars, and T-shirt salesmen. They didn't need to get to know Mark, they just trusted him because they trusted the antiques dealer; and the more they wanted something from her, the more they wanted something from him. One buyer or another would often surreptitiously slip their cell number into his hand with a whispered request. "Get me a Babe Ruth baseball." "Let me know when the next shipment comes in." "Call me when she makes her next big deal." Mark was invited out to cocktails and parties where he did not belong, and he knew it. But that wouldn't stop him. He knew enough that when you get an invitation to the Kentucky derby, you don't give up your horse. So, he lied, and he drank, and the more he drank, the more he lied. He concocted stories about priceless antiques in his boss's cellar, and hinted at more. He drank until he couldn't remember, and then woke up in his bed, as if the night before was a dream. He would lie in his bed, staring up at the ceiling, the morning light slicing through the blinds. He would think about what he was doing with a nihilistic despair. Nine months had gone by, and he was running out of energy and money. Then, a thought. No, that wouldn't work. But as he laid on the bed, paralyzed by hangover, he stirred it around again and again. Maybe... just maybe. And that was the moment he decided to set his idea into motion.

Etienne’s Top Fives of 2018: Kpop Edition - Girl Groups

This has been a fun year for girl groups for me in terms of getting into new groups (not all of which were able to make it onto this list) and rediscovering groups that I liked at debut who had kind of fallen off my radar. Overall, I feel like some of the older groups out there that really dominated attention for a while are starting to leave a void, and that’s getting filled in new and interesting ways by younger, upcoming girl groups. It’s interesting to see how this changes and progresses (and in no way changes how awesome the older groups are or were).

As usual, I would love to hear about groups that you think that I might like based on what ends up on my Top Fives (and there are a lot of groups that I love that don’t end up on them because there’s only five slots). I am making a separate list for subgroups/subunits/special projects, so if a group who released only something in that sort of category isn’t on here, and you would expect them to be, that might be why.

5. Lovelyz

This was a year of multiple excellent releases from Lovelyz. “That Day” (above) was probably my favorite, but it was a close run. They’re really getting into that groove of catchy, interesting music that shows off their voices and choreo well,and is fun. I’ve liked them since debut, and I’ve put them on these lists a few times, but I think that they’re just getting better and better as they grow up and come into their own a little bit more as a group.

4. Mamamoo

Mamamoo had a year filled with a ton of incredible releases. I picked “Starry Night” (above) as the representative MV because it is at the intersection of my favorite releases from them that I felt encompassed the most of some of the interesting new stuff they’ve been doing. They’ve definitely entered a new stage of their sound, and I’ve really liked them venturing into a sort of folk-pop tone a little bit. Moonbyul singing more this year has been awesome to me too! One of the things that this year has reinforced is that Mamamoo is going to keep coming back with more and more amazing music, and they’re going to keep growing and improving and showing new sides of their skill. It’s well worth going and listening to all of their releases this year!

3. Laboom

Laboom is another one of those groups that I’ve liked since debut who I am so glad seem to be finally stepping into a little bit more spotlight. (I still definitely wish more people paid them attention, but they seem to have developed a little more steam.) I loved all of their releases this year, but I’m putting the one of my favorites that doesn’t have as much horror imagery as the representative one, “Between Us” (above). I also really really loved “Turn It On” but I kind of have to skip the first minute and a twenty seconds of the MV, so it seemed unwise to choose it to post. I love their voices so much, and I really enjoy seeing them try out new styles.

2. Cosmic Girls/WJSN

It’s been a bit of a tumultuous year for Cosmic Girls with three members kind of busy doing other things (Meiqi and Xuan Yi with Rocket Girls (and before that on PD101 China) in China, and Cheng Xiao doing solo promotion in China), but they’ve had a few excellent releases, and I really liked their MVs of the year. I did pick “Dreams Come True” as their representative MV though because I wanted the one with all of them in it. I continue to love their sound and excellent vocals, and I hope for only good things for the group going forward.

1. Gugudan

Gugudan continues to hold their place as one of my absolute favorite girl groups. They had some awesome releases this year, and I liked “The Boots” and “Not That Type” (above) about equally. I decided on using “Not That Type” as their representative song for the year because it highlights that they are still a strong awesome group with amazing vocals and style even having had a member leave. I’ll miss them as nine members, but I really like them as eight members as well, and “Not That Type” gave one of my favorite members (Haebin) a level of highlight that she’d not really gotten up to this point in the group. Gugudan is always a little bit hard to predict in terms of which style and concept they’ll go with next, but they seem to always manage to make me like it, so I can’t wait to see what they’ll do next.

There are so many amazing girl groups out there, and I always love to see and hear more of them. There were so many that I like that I didn’t get to highlight here too! I’m always interested in suggestions of things that you think that I might like too!
