We under value and take for granted artists as a society. I’m talking all artists…writers, actors, musicians, dancers, designers, painters, sculptors…the list is endless.
The commonality is that they all have either spent their time honing their skills through practice, lessons, education or all of the above. Artists dedicate their time and often their lives to their craft.
We are failing our artists. Symphony orchestras are failing across the US. Writers and actors are on strike. People involved in the fine arts are turning to independent sales. We need to shift our expectations.
We need creatives as a part of our society. What we don’t need is the expectation that artists should work for free or for a paltry income. Simply because an artist enjoys performing or creating doesn’t mean they should have to do so for nothing.
We also no longer live in an era where it is standard that the extremely wealthy build museums or libraries or fund performing arts groups. We live in an era of amassing extreme wealth for the minority of the population.
I get that profitability is important, but at what cost? Are we ok that artists can’t afford health insurance? Are we ok that artists are leaving our communities for other opportunities? Are we ok that companies are ready to use AI over humans for creative processes and performance?
I’m not ready for any of this. We will lose a significant part of our humanity by eliminating and discouraging the ability to thrive for artists. Change can be hard but change is what is needed.
We are experiencing the beginning of a labor revolution and it will not stop with our writers, actors, UPS drivers or Starbucks baristas. The peasants are fed up and the nobility needs to pay attention.
Support your local artists. Support independent artists. Support the striking unions and organizations. We can all play a part in creating a long lasting effective change.

My local grocery store is striking.
My local Kroger's is on strike, and this Bitch is NOT crossing the picket line. Instead, I've driven by honking and waving to show my support every day for the past 3 days. But this is by no means the only way to support a labor strike! Here's how:
1. Never cross a picket line
2. Spread the word about the labor strike
3. Reward competitors for good behavior

WGA and SAG-AFTRA's strike for the Minimum Basic Agreement are reasonable, long overdue, and FAIR!
Digital illustration of a fem workers wearing a white t-shirt and jeans with a red bandana around their neck. They are sitting on a stack of TVs with various movie scenes and text that reads, 'stay tuned for worker solidarity.' They are holding a sign that reads, 'people over corporate profit.'

Some California hotel workers welcomed the new year with a labor strike. Workers at the Hilton Pasadena and the Hyatt Place Pasadena who belong to Unite Here Local 11— a union representing a range of hotel employees — walked out at dawn Sunday as preparations were underway for the Rose Bowl Parade. In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, union spokesperson Maria Teresa Kamel said organizers chose this weekend for the walkout because “it’s probably the biggest tourist event in Pasadena.” Dozens of other hotels have reached tentative agreements with the union since their contracts expired earlier this year, but these two had not, Kamel told the outlet.

Video Games related strike
"SAG-AFTRA is striking this contract so that members working in interactive media (video games) can continue earning a living doing the job that they love. Our members’ work and likenesses are being exploited by artificial intelligence, and video game companies have refused to plainly affirm, in clear and enforceable language, that they will protect all performers covered by this contract in their A.I. language."
For streamers and regular players, playing or streaming games is not crossing the picket line you are more than free to keep doing that - but they DO encourage you to talk about the strike and why it is happening! So if you do stream games, You might want to read a bit about the strike and mention or even discuss it on streams.

"There is no commitment more vital than the overthrow of capitalism, and — paradoxically — if there is even to be any hope of human survival in the abstract, it will come about only through the struggle against capital...
[Marxism's]... ultimate horizon is not the impending doom of ecological catastrophe and human extinction: it is the capitalist mode of production and its dismantlement. Martin Luther, when asked what he would do if the world were to end tomorrow, replied that he would plant a tree; the Marxist should reply: we will call for a general strike. I jest, of course, but it is only by fostering such indifference to catastrophe that we can ever hope to avert it."
- Daniel Hartley, from "Against the Anthropocene." Salvage, 31 August 2015.

A few months ago, I became an assistant manager at [insert mega large corporation] and I’m glad for the actual wage and benefits. I’m also really wanting increase morale and do as much for my coworkers as I can, unlike our previous one. Overall, I think I’m doing okay, but this week my manager brought me into a meeting where corporate wants us to be more aware of employee organizing here and at other branches. And my manage wants me to personally keep an eye out and report anything, since I have “such a close relationship” with our staff. What do I do, aunties? I feel like i can’t refuse or I’ll lose my job, and also I don’t want to report anything and risk any of my staff getting punished or fired, esp during a pandemic. Hell, I went to some of those potential union meetings when I was part time so I’m all for it. I just feel stuck?
HOT STRIKE SUMMER... is coming to a close, so let's begin this HOT STRIKE AUTUMN!!!!!
First off, your coworkers are lucky to have you. Your instincts are very ethical and correct: reporting pro-union organizing activities to your bosses is pretty shady shit and could lead to folks getting punished for the crime of... well, wanting to be treated like a human at work.
So I say you stick with the letter rather than the spirit of the task. They want you to report anything that could lead to collective organizing. Well, I don't know anything that leads to unionization faster than shitty management practices. So start reporting instances of inhumane management, or management policies that could lead to unfair treatment of labor. When they ask you who talked about labor organizing related to that poor management, just say "No one said it. I just think it's the kind of thing that could lead people to get upset and start unionizing."
It might not work. To be fair, we haven't tried it. But my hope is that it will keep you in good standing while also showing your upper management the error of their ways. Good luck, sweetness!

I just want to say that I absolutely love how everyone's striking right now at the exact same time. The more people who are willing to show that everyone deserves a livable wage off one job the better. Fuck the rich bastards that ride your coattails and siphon off of your time, energy, and creativity. Fuck those parasites that will happily fire you for no reason other than to save a penny. Fuck those elitist shit for brains that would sell their soul and yours if it made a profit, and cater to bigots via censorship and cancellations. I only hope that workers everywhere else follow suit and we can collectively demand what we deserve.

under my first wga/sag-aftra strike post, i had a frustrating interaction that makes me want to reiterate what the unions want from non-union supporters.
during the wga/sag-aftra strike, you should:
donate to the plethora of fundraisers set up to support writers, actors, and other crew members and businesses affected by the strike.
SHARE SHARE SHARE! post about the strike. outwardly and vocally support the strike.
support other unions in the entertainment industry trying to unionize! many of them are trying, such as the animators at disney! show them support too!
follow strike rules that are easily accessible online. what does following strike rules mean? it means not doing the work that the union writers and actors are currently not doing because of the strike. that would be scabbing, and scabbing makes you a dick.
participate at a local wga/sag-aftra event or picket.
contact employers— disney, amazon, netflix, apple, discovery-warner, nbc universal, sony, paramount, etc— and urge them to give the writers and actors a fair deal.
get more information at sagaftrastrike.org and wgacontract2023.org. ways to help and donate are on both websites!
‼️to reiterate: do not boycott. neither the wga or sag-aftra are calling for a boycott of streaming services. right now, boycotting services against the unions wishes is not helping anyone. it is counterproductive.‼️

Drivers represented by Teamsters Local 705 began an unfair labor practices (ULP) strike on 8 January at the US Foods distribution center in Bensenville after weeks of contentious contract negotiations, the union said. “With this strike, the Teamsters have struck a blow that will resonate throughout corporate America,” Teamsters Warehouse Division Director and Teamsters Central Region International Vice President Tom Erickson said. “US Foods Teamsters held the line until they secured the contract they deserved. Workers in the food service and grocery industry are organizing with the Teamsters like never before to hold greedy employers accountable.”
