I tried my best with the parts I had available to me, but it’s not quite the same, is it?

Laid Back Camp Movie (2022)
Any return to Laid Back Camp is an absolute delight. Newcomers to the anime could watch this film and also have a lovely time, you'll just be slightly more invested in the characters if you already know them from the show.
They introduced a higher stakes project than I expected to be the focus of the film (they could have just made a feature length episode of the show and I would have been completely happy). Something that I also appreciated was how the realities of adult responsibilities and work was allowed to make a mark on things. Though of course there is little deviation from the lovely, comfy tone of the show.
Definitely watch this film if you enjoy the show and I highly recommend Laid Back Camp in any form to people looking for something charming, chilled out and comfy.

I was surprised to see that the Laid-Back Camp movie was available on Crunchyroll. As much as this show is the ultimate comfort food in animated form, I have to be honest when I say the movie didn’t need to be two hours long. That being said, at least it did not come off like a series of episodes strung together for the sake of being feature length. Unlike another anime movie that released this year.

I just finished the Yuru Camp movie! And let me tell you, my body was NOT ready for the movie to begin with a time skip.
I’ve rambled before about how slice of life stories often depict characters falling into a comfortable routine over the course of the series, then when outside circumstances forcibly change (or maybe even end) that routine... THAT’S the moment that a seemingly simple story grabs your heart and squeezes.
Considering Yuru Camp is a high school anime, I was anticipating that the aforementioned outside circumstances would be the girls graduating. But no! My heart wasn’t even given the chance to prepare itself to witness the end of that era of their lives. The story instead takes an unexpected leap forward into their adult lives. I legit had a hard time believing it at first. I was thinking that the scene of Rin going to work would be some sort of bit. Like we would see a flash-forward in her life as the setup to a joke.
But it wasn’t a joke. The world of the movie really is several years ahead of when we last saw the girls in season 2. And I gotta say, the exposition into this familiar but different world is executed in a super clever way. Because the audience wants to know what’s changed, and guess what? It’s been a hot minute since these girls have seen each other so they are ALSO dying to know what everyone has been up to! As they catch up with each other, so too does the audience get familiar with the new status quo.
I find it fascinating that the Yuru Camp series (to date) covers like 10+ years of the lives of the main characters. That’s not something I (personally) see much of, and I’m very curious what point in their lives season 3 will pick up from.

Salmon Soup (Makes 5 Servings)
Tumblr media
We bring you this recipe from our panel, “Anime Foodies: Laid-Back Camp The Movie”.
During the construction of the campsite in Yamanashi, our characters spend the night to give the campground a test run.  Nadeshiko and Aoi are assigned to feed the group and stumble upon a tremendous sale on salmon which they take advantage of for a selection of dishes for the evening.  This first recipe we see them create is a play on a Finnish soup called lohikeitto.
6 Cups - Water
1 ¼ Pound Skin-Off – Salmon
7 – Black Peppercorns
2 – Bay Leaves
1 Medium – White Onion
4 Medium – Carrots
2 Small – Russet Potatoes
1 TSP – Dried Dill
1 TSP – Kosher Salt
1/2 Cup – Heavy Cream
Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
As the water boils, peel the carrots and chop these and the onions into a large dice.
Once the water is boiling, add the peppercorns, bay leaves, onions, and carrots; cover; reduce the heat to medium; and cook for 5 minutes.
As this is cooking, peel the potatoes and chop into large, bite-sized pieces.
After the 5 minutes are up, add the potatoes, cover, and cook for another 8 minutes.
As this is cooking, check the salmon for bones and slice into 10 large nuggets.
After the 8 minutes are up, add the salmon, salt, cream, and dill; reduce the heat to medium low; cover; cook for a final 5 minutes, and serve.

Optional/Notes:
If you use skin on salmon, make sure to check for any leftover scales on the skin before slicing it.
If you want a bit of a richer taste to the soup, you can substitute the water for a fish stock though this may reduce the amount of salt you need to add.
The small number of peppercorns don’t add a noticeable pepper flavor, so these can be crushed or ground if you want more pepper flavor to the soup.
If you would like to use fresh dill, increase the amount to 1 TBSP.

Yuru Camp movie was a worthy sequel to the series! It’s the perfect movie to watch on my day off when I want to relax to the fullest haha. I really missed these characters so it was really nice to see them as working adults with their own responsibilities.
The movie did a good job of balancing the comfy slice of life elements and the more mature sides of our characters. I really liked seeing the characters deal with their working life while maintaining their hobbies.
Rin and Nadeshiko’s conversation at the onsen stood out: we have more freedom to do things when we’re grown ups but we also have more responsibilities too.
On the production side, I really missed C-Station’s character designs. They were really good!
9/10

I've been wondering when or if a show will get its hooks into me like The Owl House did, and as I'm six episodes into a rewatch of the first two seasons of Laid-Back Camp even as I watched the season 3 premiere, I think I've found it. Something about it is very addictive and I wish there was like 500 episodes lmao
