The Earl Carroll Theatre and Moulin Rouge: Two Decades of Entertainment

Promoter Earl Carroll built his second Earl Carroll Theatre at 6230 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood and opened its doors on December 26, 1938. Just as he’d done at his New York City theatre, Carroll emblazoned the words "through these portals pass the most beautiful girls in the world" above the entrance.

The building's facade was adorned by what was at the time one of Hollywood's most famous landmarks: a 20-foot high neon portrait of entertainer Beryl Wallace, one of Carroll's "most beautiful girls in the world," as well as his devoted companion. Another major feature of the theatre was its "Wall of Fame" where many of Hollywood's stars inscribed a personal message on a cement plaque. The Earl Carroll Theatre was a popular spot for Hollywood’s movie stars and film industry moguls such as Darryl F. Zanuck and Walter Wanger who also sat on the venue's board of governors.  

Considered an "entertainment palace", the glamorous supper club-theatre offered shows on a massive stage featuring a 60-foot wide, double revolving turntable and staircase. Swings could also be lowered from the ceiling during performances. Extremely successful talents such as Jean Spangler, Mara Corday, Phyllis Coates, Maila Nurmi, Gloria Pall, and Lucille Ball were some of the showgirls who performed there.

Following Earl Carroll and Beryl Wallace’s untimely deaths in a 1948 plane crash in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, various promoters stepped in to run the theatre’s operations in an effort to continue its success. When Frank Sennes took over in 1953, he changed the name to Moulin Rouge and undertook an extensive remodeling campaign, expanding the seating capacity to 1250 and making it the largest theater-restaurant in the world. After months of construction, booking acts, hiring dancers, designing costumes, and developing a new stage production, Moulin Rouge opened its doors on December 25, 1953.

From the beginning, Sennes was dedicated to providing the finest stage entertainment available and the venue quickly became a center of nightlife in downtown Hollywood once again. During the next seven years of its illustrious existence, the Moulin Rouge featured countless outstanding personalities including Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Daniels, Dean Martin, Dennis Day, the Mills Brothers, Anna Marie Alberghetti, Frankie Laine, Johnny Ray, and “Mister Showman” himself, Liberace. In addition to all the star headliners, the production cast over 100 beautiful singers and dancers who showcased their talents on the huge multi-tiered, moving stage, in elaborate costumes costing in excess of $75,000.

The success that Moulin Rouge experienced was due in part to what Sennes referred to as the "package deal." For just $5.50, customers received a deluxe full course dinner, dancing to a fine orchestra, and top notch entertainment. Sundays were devoted to the family matinee, featuring a kiddie circus with clowns, balloons and toys.

Beginning in 1955, the daytime show Queen for a Day starring Jack Bailey, was broadcast from the theatre. By the late fifties, Sennes found it more and more difficult to attract A-list entertainers because of his inability to compete with the high salaries being offered in Las Vegas. Recognizing the enormous potential opportunities that lie in Las Vegas, he closed the Moulin Rouge in 1960 and soon began producing shows in the gambling capital.

For a time, the building on Sunset became the Hullabaloo Rock & Roll Club, capitalizing on the popularity of the TV variety show of the same name. It was re-named the Aquarius Theatre in the late 1960s, serving as the venue for the long running musical Hair, and became even more famous as the place where The Doors performed on July 21, 1969. In 1983, the Pick-Vanoff Company purchased the property and converted it into a state-of-the art television theater that was the taping studio of Star Search for nine years. It was also used for Jerry Lewis’ annual Muscular Dystrophy Telethon for many years. In the late 1990s, the cable television channel Nickelodeon changed the building’s name to "Nickelodeon on Sunset" and made it their West Coast headquarters for live-action television productions, filming shows such as All That, The Amanda Show, Drake & Josh, and iCarly.

In 2004, the building was sold to a private equity firm as part of a larger parcel of property. In 2007, the City of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission designated the property a Historic Cultural Monument. Currently, another rehabilitation is planned and the show may yet go on in some other fashion. Such is the life of storied historic buildings in Hollywood.

Skeleton Girl | Chapitre Deux

Hannah could feel the sweat bead on her forehead as her arms became sticky with perspiration. She was slumped back in a chair that was anything but comfortable. She ran her cold hands over her inked up arms, cooling them slightly, if only for a moment.

Her nerves played into the heat as she kept her eyes trained on the empty desk that was in front of her, waiting for Mamrie to come in. She was admittedly early, but whenever the red head took a detrimental tone with her, she knew it was better than being late.

Mamrie was usually a laid back boss. She was stuck in her ways, yes, but she was ultimately putting every bit of herself into the show. There were rare moments when she pulled back a little with Hannah. Sometimes they shared a drink, or a heartfelt conversation, but Mamrie's true self had always lain with Grace.

"Han," Mamrie's voice made Hannah jump slightly, she hadn't notice the girl walk in. Mamrie had a silent nature about her, if you were lost in thought she could pop up like a piece of toast. She was sitting in front of Hannah now, her arms crossed as her fingers tapped slightly on the desk.

Hannah cleared her throat, adjusting her position as she pushed against the armrests with her palms stinging. "You wanted to talk?"

"Yes," Mamrie smiled softly "I would have started by now, but I was hoping you'd be present for the conversation."

"I will be," Hannah responded, scratching the top of her arm again. It was mid-summer, making the tents unbearable during the morning- the heat lasting until late afternoon. By the time it cools off, the mosquitos would come out and pretty much remind everyone of the season.

Mamrie chuckled, running a hand through her hair sloppily "I have a proposition for you."

Hannah raised her eyebrows, cocking her head slightly to the side. The last time Mamrie offered up a proposition ended in her adding a light to that stupid box. Sure it helped, but Hannah didn't mind being close to Grace in the pitch- well, until the stabbing part commenced.

"Are you going to add some carpeting? Maybe hard wood flooring?" Hannah smirked, resting her head on her knuckles. Mamrie shook her head softly glancing down at the ground as she stifled her amusement.

"I thought you hated that box, now you want renovations?" Mamrie cleared her throat, taking the humor in the air along with it "What if I had a different job for you?"

Hannah's breath caught in her throat, her eyebrows knitting together quickly as her mouth became dry almost instantly. Her vibrant eyes searched Mamrie's face, finding nothing but a serious expression.

"What kind of job?" Hannah's words were cautious.

"Tamer," the taller girl said simply, messing with the pen that had found itself into her palm, waiting for a response, but she didn't receive on right away "Of course you'd be a roust while Sawyer trained you in the art of well... training."

Hannah bit into the side of her cheek, waiting for a sharp sting to follow. She raised an eyebrow, nodding slowly. Hannah's thoughts hadn't necessarily caught up with her yet. Adrenaline was streaming through her veins as she still tried to comprehend the offer that Mamrie put out on the table.

"Say something, Mini Hart" Mamrie turned on her protective nature for a moment, checking to see if her friend was still able to pull air into her lungs. "Do you want it or not?"

"Of course I want it!" Hannah said excitedly, shaking her head clear of all doubt "I really really want it."

"Good, because you have it," Mamrie said, seemingly talking in circles as she shook her head slightly as she grimaced "I can't believe I kept you in that position for as long as I did."

Hannah couldn't hold back her questions much longer "What if I get mauled?" She said, suddenly taking the red head aback as a laugh escaped the older girls lips.

"If you get mauled, you'd die." Mamrie said, placing the rubber tip of the pen between her teeth "which isn't really a stretch from your previous job."

Hannah nodded again, dismissing the fears of working with a wild animal once again. She should be happy- hell, Hannah was happy. This whole circus trick had put a huge strain on the relationship she had with Grace. If she wasn't worried about getting stabbed one night, she was worried about how Grace would control her nightmares the next.

"You'll be fine, Hannah." Mamrie dipped her chin "You just need to learn the ropes first."

The tennis ball landed in Grace's hands softly as the blood began to rush to her head. She could feel herself getting dizzy, but her focus was ultimately on not letting the ball drop to the ground. It was a nervous habit of hers- she always needed to have something in her hands at all times. If she didn't, she would be picking absentmindly at the hem of her clothes.

Hannah would always end up scolding her for it, but would patch up the holes that Grace had created with a smirk and little to no complaints.

"Did they say what you would be doing?" She asked, tossing the ball up in the air once more before the neon felt found her fingertips. "Lions, tigers,-"

"bears, oh my" Hannah chuckled to herself as she leaned back in the chair, letting the light shade her features. She was writing something down in a leather bound journal, the pen conveying her thoughts as she creased the lined paper.

"I'm serious, Dorothy." Grace said, smiling herself "What'll it be?"

"Don't know," Hannah leaned back further, balancing on two legs of the chair "Whatever it is, it's not here yet. I'm a roust now, remember?"

Grace scoffed at the slight bitterness in Hannah's voice. There was nothing wrong with being a roust. In fact, that's what she was when she first started here. Nothing more than someone to pitch tents and greet people at the door, all that hard work did something for her character, and made her even more appreciative when she got out of the job.

"Stop being senile," Grace threw the ball into the air again, confident enough to keep her eyes on a ripped hole in the top of the tent. Her gaze watched the inky sky. "You skipped that process when you got into this place anyway."

She got no response, causing her to glance up. Hannah held the tennis ball in her grasp, a smirk moving across her lips "Oh really? It seems like a lot of hard work."

"Not any more than you're used to." Grace winked, sitting up as she shook her head softly, allowing the blood to drain back into her veins. Hannah chuckled at Grace's attempt to shake the dizziness away as she sat down next to her.

Hannah scooted closer to Grace, causing the blonde to fall slightly back onto her elbows "and what exactly am I used to?"

Laine The Clown, 'Neon Circus' | Then Vs. Now

Years ago I attempted this weird angle while doing some explorative sketching, and ended up turning it into an actual piece. One that needed much work mind you, however I thought it was decent at the time. I ended up having that piece (the one on the left), as part of my portfolio which was reviewed by an actual industry professional at the time who very lovingly told me that I needed to go back and study some anatomy and also use references more often, looking back I probably should have done it sooner but, here we are. Unbenknownst to me, that advice simmered in my head and finally spawned the piece on the right, which is a bit of a sneak peek to an upcoming work of mine based off of the personal project :) It makes me happy to see how far I've come [Also i know i put 8 hrs, the left was probably more like 9-12 hrs, I just have a habit of not considering random stuff like the intitial sketch phase]

P E P P E R | The Watcher

Another installment of my personal project exploration series, for "Neon Circus"! This was a bit of an intro/nod to our character, Pepper, who, without revealing too much, functions as partly an antagonist for much of the story, and resides topside, on Etid's "Zone 1", similar to Laine and Rosemary [my 2 main OC's] :D I made this piece before I updated her outfit, but the likeness is still very similar.
