Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
In today’s review, I find that a new change of place, may not be enough to escape your past. As I attempt a #positive review of the 1998, anniversary of Halloween H20 20 Years Later. #JamieLeeCurtis #JoshHartnett #AdamArkin #MichelleWilliams
We all have that desire or inclination, deep in the back of the mind, that wonders what if we could run away from our responsibilities and start over; away from the baggage of the past? In 1998, over two decades since Michael’s attack on October 31st, we might find out that a certain resident of Haddonfield might have just done that. Yet the events of Halloween may still shadow her life, and the…

„The evidence concerning Hera’s status in Thessaly is ambiguous, and has given rise to diametrically different interpretations: for some Hera’s cult was introduced to Thessaly only at a late date and was of little, if any, importance, while for others she was one of the oldest and most important divinities of the area. The kinds of evidence that form the main source material for Thessalian religion, that is coins, inscribed dedications, and archaeological remains, are mostly late in date and give us very little and uncertain information about her cult in Thessaly and in the various perioikic areas. It is hardly worrying that Hera may not have been depicted on Thessalian coins. As one moves to examine the evidence of inscribed dedications the absence of any offerings to Hera from almost all Thessalian cities, and indeed from the rich corpora of Atrax and Gonnoi, becomes more alarming. Atrax, Gonnoi, and yet other Thessalian cities have furnished a wealth of dedications made by women on different important occasions of their lives, sometimes no doubt in connection with marriage, as is probably the case with some dedicatory inscriptions to Artemis and Demeter. One might have expected Hera to be markedly present in the evidence. … To be fair, she is not totally absent. There are a couple of Hellenistic inscribed dedications to her from Larisa and Demetrias. The idea that the dedications from Larisa and Demetrias should not be dismissed as simply late and circumstantial evidence gains support from the fact that in both places there is further epigraphic evidence for Hera’s cult. …
Be that as it may, in one context Hera’s absence is definite and demands further explanation. A fourth-century monument found at Pherai, persuasively reconstructed as an altar, has inscribed on one of its long sides the names of six goddesses. It seems to have been only one-half of a larger monument consisting of two separate altars dedicated to the twelve gods (the second altar would have borne the inscribed names of six male gods). Several of the well-known Olympians are included among the six goddesses: Athena, Demeter, Aphrodite, and Hestia. Hera and Artemis, however, are omitted and in their place we find the lesser divinity Themis and the local Thessalian deity Ennodia. … According to scholarly consensus, the cult of Themis, who was one of the earlier wives of Zeus in mythology, was very important and had deep roots in Thessaly. Themis, however, cannot have replaced Hera in Thessaly, at least not so straightforwardly and simply as a scholar such as Miller seems to imagine. Thessalian Themis does not seem to have been involved in marriage, Hera’s traditional domain. Her role was mostly political. And it seems that it was precisely thanks to her important political role that she was included among the twelve gods on the Pheraian monument.
The evidence of myths adds further depth to our analysis of the status and role of Thessalian Hera. Hera looms large in the story of Pelias, the mythical king of Iolkos. Pelias, the story went, was very disrespectful of the goddess, while he honoured mostly Poseidon, who was his father. As is usual with similar stories, divine punishment ensued. Hera’s wrath fell upon Pelias, and it was with her help that Jason won the golden fleece and returned with Medea to Iolkos, who caused the death of Pelias. The story, it could be argued, concerns the division of timai between the two powerful deities, as the growing powers of one encroached on those of the other. It is in this context of division of timai between Hera and Poseidon that we should place a group of inscriptions found in the wider area of Larisa and which give Poseidon two cultic epithets, Impsios and Zeuksanthios, which resonate closely with epithets attributed to Hera in her stronghold, the Argolid. Impsios is the Thessalian equivalent of Zygios (the one who yokes), and Zygia was a well-known epithet of Hera; while Zeuksanthios seems to be a combination of Antheia, another well-attested epithet of Hera, and Zeuksidia, a variation of the epithet Zygia. …
A closer reading of the fragmentary second-century inscription from Larisa, referred to already, reveals a landscape saturated with Hera’s myths. Amongst the various sanctuaries and sacred properties listed, which include a sanctuary of Zeus and Hera, there is also a reference to the little-known hero Epaphos. Epaphos was, according to mythology, the son of Io, the tortured priestess of Hera at Argos, who crossed the world haunted by the gadfly that Hera had sent to punish her, in search of a place to rest and give birth to her son. That this Argive set of myths is found here, transplanted to the northern plains in the shadows of Mount Olympus, is not surprising: after all this was once Pelasgian Argos. We have come full circle, from Hera’s exclusion from the twelve of Pherai, and her faded trace in the material evidence, to her unmistakable stamp on the mythical landscape of Thessaly. Some focus on the first to underline her supposed absence; others on the last: Hera is there, as powerful as ever, it is the evidence that falls short! But in truth, each of the different kinds of evidence allows us only a partial and distorted view of the role of the goddess in the area. Only by piecing it all together can we trace the contours of Hera’s place within her Thessalian family.”

Everything is clean, quiet, harmonious.
I was convinced of this personally.
Quiet snow and clouds.

Writing about this world is bad.
Whatever the era,

And the nights - God forbid.

Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You (Gil Junger, 1999) Cast: Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Larry Miller, Susan May Pratt, Gabrielle Union, Daryl Mitchell, Allison Janney, David Leisure. Screenplay: Karen McCullah, Kirsten Smith, based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: Mark Irwin. Production design: Carol Winstead Wood. Film editing: O. Nicholas Brown. Music: Richard Gibbs. 10 Things I Hate About You is a reminder of what we lost with Heath Ledger's early death: an actor capable of elevating even a formulaic teen comedy whose obvious source makes the taming of the shrewish Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) a foregone conclusion. Ledger brings a buoyancy to the role of Patrick Verona, the film's Petruchio, that makes the clichéd role of teen-movie hunk into something fresh and engaging. But that's not to undervalue Stiles's contribution to helping the on-again, off-again role of Kate become somewhat credible. It's not clear why sometimes Kat is clearly infatuated with Patrick and the next minute keeping him at arm's length. I suspect the script underwent so many revisions that everyone lost sight of the thread it was supposed to be following. Stiles gives Kat an edge of wit and charm that is, of course, lost on her fellow high school students, as it must be to keep the story moving. But there are other pleasures to the film, too, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, making a breakthrough out of sitcom celebrity into full-fledged movie actor, and the always welcome David Krumholtz as his geeky sidekick. The adult roles are sidelined: Allison Janney is wasted as the horny guidance counselor, irritated that the kids are always interrupting her attempt to write a pornographic bodice-ripper; Daryl Mitchell's irascible English teacher makes no sense; and David Leisure's gym teacher is there mostly to get shot in the ass during archery practice and to be distracted by Kat's flashing him to help Patrick escape detention. Larry Miller does what he can with Walter Stratford, the uptight father of Kat and Bianca, but here again the script isn't helping him much. Still, 10 Things has plenty of enjoyable moments and a glimpse of some young performers with bright (if in Ledger's case shadowed) futures.

Most squander any potential they have by embracing every dopey cliche and incorporating every overused gag. “10 Things I Hate About You” is an interesting case. It definitely has its fair share of cliches and many of the character types have been used several times over. But at the same time the film is cle

ver and infectiously charming. It’s such a likable movie and even after recently revisiting it after a few years I found myself once again having a great time with it.Gil Junger directed this modern twist on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”. Junger never directed much other than sitcoms and that’s a little surprising. He manages this film well and keeps things moving at a nice pace. He was also blessed with a talented young cast. “10 Things I Hate About You” was the launching pad for the careers of Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. These three drive the main story which is sometimes a bit formulaic but it never ceases to be entertaining.Stiles plays the antisocial feminist outcast Kat. She’s constantly at odds with her popular sophomore socialite younger sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). Levitt plays Cameron, a new student in their school who is smitten with Bianca at first sight. Ledger plays another outcast who pretty much operates by his own rules. We also get a pompous jerk of a jock, a geek without a clue, and an overprotective but well-meaning father. Most of these are characters that we’ve seen in many other movies. You can’t help but notice it. Yet even with that and a few plot points that will feel very familiar, “10 Things” quickly attach
derably different. “10 Things I Hate About You” is what’s called a teen comedy and that title alone deservedly gives you reason to pause. But while it may appear to be the traditional nonsense that we often get, it is actually a lot more. The characters, their personalities, and their situations are convincing and interesting. And even though we get occasional breezes of routine storylines, the film manages to do things a bit different and it never feels conventional. That’s why the movie always works for me regardless of how many times I have seen it. Great review Keith! I LOVE this movie, I have watched it so many times and it never gets old. Smart, witty, funny, charming, it really covers it all, and Ledger was (as with everything else) amazing here. Isn’t it good. It’s a breath of fresh air in a genre that is often times stale and annoying. Thanks for the comments! Having teen and Pre-teen daughters when this first came out, it was inevitably on our must see list. I put up with a lot of dreck in those years, but I am happy to say that this was a refreshing and intelligent change of pace. While not exactly the same, there were several parallels between my kids and the two sisters in the story. That made the film feel special to them, Oh and Heath Ledger. Heath Ledger was really solid and even the cutsey sequences felt right with how he sold his character. Allison Janney as usual, steals a couple of scenes. I think this is Larry Miller’s best role, his overprotective father was a little close to home at times. A treat that I can re-watch easily. Your last line says it best. That’s exactly how I feel about it. It’s one of those movies with so many good moments and so much truth at it’s core that I can watch it anytime it is on. One of those movies I have never seen but have been hearing good things about… It’s definitely worth checking out. I actually saw it by accident. It’s one that normally wouldn’t appeal to me considering the company it keeps within that genre but it really is a nice surprise. I love this film, Keith. Everything about it is fun, smart–Heath and Julia are wonderful together. The message is important, too, about being yourself and learning to trust. Nice post, Keith. One of my all time favourite teen comedies. It does the genre so well, doesn’t compromise on the usual teen film antics. The characters are great to watch and there is a fantastic group of young actors at work here supported by some older ones. Adore this film. Glad you enjoyed too! I really did. I remember the first time I saw it. I was so surprised that it was as good as it was. In fact, I was so caught off guard that I just assumed I was wrong and almost dismissed it. But then I saw it again and again and again and I realized that I really did like the movie. Love this movie! It’s one of my favorites from the 90s. You’re right – the movie is blessed with such a talented young cast. Makes me miss Heath Ledger every time I watch it. One cool thing I remember after watching behind the scenes on this movie in one of the final scenes, when Kat is reading her poem, and then she cries at the end – the director was saying how Kat crying was never in the script, but that Stiles added it. I thought it was such an honest scene, and it’s a reminder of how underrated and majorly talented Julia Stiles is. Great review, Keith! I absolutely love that scene. It really does feel honest and genuine. I’m completely sold on the emotion every time I see that scene. one of my favorite chick flicks! Glad to hear that. I really think this movie deserves the fan base it has. This movie gave us JGlev and Hedger and for that, I will always love it. It did indeed. The movie that introduced me to Ledger and I followed him since. JGL was also a fan favourite of mine from 3RD ROCK… And fun movie overall. Great one Keith! Thanks man. It really is a fun film. And Ledger really came onto the scene then. Like you, I’ve loved Ledger’s work since. Watch free movies and tvshows on VidooTv

es you to these characters and its hard not to care for them. The movie has its fun moments and there are some interesting relationships at work. But it also deals truthfully with several real teen issues that I still respond too. The script dances through all of these things and rarely does a disservice to any of them. There are times where things just get silly and a bit absurd. A particular school detention scene and another one taking place in Kat’s literature class instantly comes to mind. These feel lame and fabricated and in some ways clash with the movie’s better moments. But these weaker lazy moments don’t define the film as a whole. And getting back to the performances, it doesn’t take you long to notice that Heath Ledger was a special actor. He was always known to bring an authenticity to every role and we definitely see it here. Even in the few occasions where the script trips up, Ledger never lets the scene go to waste. It is such a spirited and strong performance. I also liked Stiles here, an actress who I have always felt was generally underrated. Her character is a bit obvious but she has such a good chemistry with Ledger. And Gordon-Levitt is also a lot of fun. At first I thought I knew exactly what type of stereotypical character he was going to portray but he turned out consi
