The Sun is stirring from its latest slumber.
As sunspots and flares bubble from the Sun’s surface, representatives from NASA, NOAA, and the Solar Cycle Prediction Panel announced that the Sun has reached its solar maximum period.
The solar cycle is a natural cycle the Sun goes through as it transitions between low and high magnetic activity and back again. Roughly every 11 years, at the height of the solar cycle, the Sun’s magnetic poles flip (on Earth, that’d be like the North and South poles swapping places every decade), and the Sun goes from calm to an active and stormy state.
During this most active part of the cycle (solar maximum), the Sun shows many more sunspots and often unleashes immense explosions of light, energy, and solar radiation, creating "space weather" which affects satellites and astronauts in space, as well as communications systems and power grids down here on Earth.
NASA and NOAA track sunspots to determine and predict the progress of the solar cycle - and ultimately solar activity. Sunspots are cooler regions on the Sun caused by a concentration of magnetic field lines. They're the visible component of active regions, areas of intense and complex magnetic fields on the Sun and the source of solar eruptions.
“During solar maximum, the number of sunspots, and therefore the amount of solar activity, increases,” says Jamie Favors of the NASA Space Weather Program. “This increase in activity provides an exciting opportunity to learn about our closest star, but also causes real effects at Earth and throughout our solar system.”
Solar activity has led to increased auroral activity and impacts on satellites and electronic infrastructure this year. During 2024, barrages of huge solar flares and coronal mass ejections launched clouds of charged particles toward Earth, creating the strongest geomagnetic storms we've experienced in decades, and possibly the strongest auroras visible in the past 500 years.
This is a great time to watch the Sun (via the internet or a properly filtered telescope only - never view the Sun without certified safe solar filters made for your instrument) and catch some auroras. Even here at Ad Astra headquarters in Kansas (which almost never sees an aurora), we've been able to enjoy a few nighttime light shows this year!
This solar maximum could last for many more months, so stay tuned!

"There has been a considerable amount of correspondence relating to "electronic animals" following the earlier series on Bionics and the articles about EMMA last year. Readers' letters, in the main, have emphasised the need for less expensive drive systems in these "animals" and, among other things, pointed to the shortcomings of the noise cell arrangement used in EMMA. Unlike the earlier models, XEE employs integrated-circuitry for all its control logic, using discrete components only where it is more simple and cheaper to do so. Further differences include the bodiment of relays in the muscle control circuitry, rather than transistors which only afford a modicum of isolation between logic and drive systems, and which, because of their relatively high Vcc lose volts that could be usefully driving motors. Related to EMMA, XEE is mechanically a sort of "middi" version; indeed, this new animal represents just the beginning of others which, physically, will tend towards the "mini". We will examine the anatomy of this latest "bug" which, not inappropriately, got its name from a computer that had been programmed to generate random letter and word sequences. Basically, XEE has two senses, one, an electro-optical sense provided by a pair of photo-sensitive resistors; and the other, a load monitoring arrangement associated with the muscle control circuitry. How XEE ultimately decides to respond as a result of inputs to these senses is determined by a subsystem employing a clock and random generator. Several degrees of freedom are provided permitting turning to the right, turning to the left, driving forward, driving in reverse, and stopping. At the end of March, it emerged that the Trump administration was making a new push for Ukraine’s natural resources, including its now famous rare earths. It’s no surprise that the United States wants access to the precious commodity, since relying on the world’s top processor, China, is hardly sustainable. But very little is known about Ukraine’s actual rare-earth deposits, and a large part of them sit in Russian-occupied territories. Building the infrastructure for extraction would take years—and require peace first.
Here’s a better idea, one that would make the United States dependent on no one and create jobs at home (not to mention do a good deed for the environment): recycle rare earths in Americans’ used gadgets.
On March 23, the Trump administration sent Ukraine a proposal on its natural resources that went far beyond the draft agreement on which the two sides agreed in February, the Financial Times reports. The draft agreement, the Times explains, “would apply to all mineral resources, including oil and gas, and major energy assets across the entire Ukrainian territory.”
It also marks the latest salvo in U.S. President Donald Trump’s long-standing quest for Ukraine’s supposed rare-earth riches. “I told them [Ukraine] that I want the equivalent of like $500 billion worth of rare earth, and they’ve essentially agreed to do that. So at least we don’t feel stupid,” Trump told Fox News on Feb. 10.
Ukraine’s rare earths are the core of the natural resources agreement Trump has been pushing President Volodymyr Zelensky to sign. A softer version of the now proposed deal was supposed to have been signed during Zelensky’s visit to Washington in February, but it was derailed by the acrimonious meeting between the two sides.
And now Washington has upped the ante with a proposed agreement that covers the entirety of Ukrainian natural resources and would send revenues directly abroad, with the United States receiving royalties before Ukraine, the Times notes. The deal, which also foresees a U.S.-majority board, would effectively give Washington ownership of Ukraine’s rare earths.
Getting the minerals out of the Ukrainian rock would, alas, be extremely difficult. Three of Ukraine’s four major rare-earth deposits are within or near Russian-controlled areas, as Erik Jonsson, a senior geologist with the Geological Survey of Sweden, told IEEE Spectrum, a journal published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
There’s also the matter of how large the deposits actually are. “The numbers are believed to come from Soviet surveys dating as far back as the 1960s,” Spectrum notes. Rare earths are notoriously difficult to mine because they appear in tiny quantities within larger pieces of rock, making the commercial aspect of any deal highly sketchy. Spectrum concludes, in italics to emphasize the fact, that “there are no deposits of rare-earth ore in Ukraine known to be minable in an economically viable way.”
For years, the United States has tried to solve its increasingly painful dependence on rare-earth imports, which it needs mainly for electronics, from smartphones to F-35s. (An F-35 needs 920 pounds of rare earths.) Though rare earths are mined in different countries, usually African ones, nearly 90 percent are processed in China, which during globalization’s heyday was not a problem. Now, though, it is.
Since 2020, China has blocked exports of graphite—which is, like rare earths, a crucial component of electric vehicle batteries, though it doesn’t belong to the rare-earth group—to Sweden, where lithium-ion firm Northvolt had been trying to jump-start European EV-battery production before declaring bankruptcy last month. China has also threatened to withhold rare earths from Lockheed Martin, the U.S. maker of the F-35, and is imposing a wide range of controls in response to Trump’s trade war.
The U.S. government must reduce America’s dependence on China. But restoring U.S. industrial chains is a long and painful process that can’t be conjured up overnight. In 2022, the Biden administration awarded $35 million for rare-earth processing to MP Materials, whose mine in Mountain Pass, California, is the United States’ only scaled site.
Over many years, Australian miner Syrah Resources has also received several hundred millions of dollars in U.S. government loans and grants to mine rare earths and graphite in Mozambique, including $165 million in January. Syrah also built a processing plant in Louisiana for its graphite. But as soon as Syrah’s mining of graphite in Mozambique seemed to take off, China flooded the market with lower-priced specimens, the Wall Street Journal notes. It was hardly a subtle signal from Beijing.
But there’s another way for Trump to get the United States the rare earths it needs—and this way would not involve forcing a deal on a savaged country or finding exemptions to global tariffs. In fact, it would involve no country other than the United States. It would even aid the environment, which ought to matter now that the world is approaching the climate change point of no return.
That better way is recycling. Electronics waste is growing rapidly because we all have more electronic gadgets, which we replace increasingly often. In 2022, the latest year available, the world discarded e-waste containing 31 million metric tons of metals, 17 million tons of plastics, and 14 million tons of minerals, glass, and other reusable materials. But only an estimated 19 million tons was recycled—mainly “metals like iron which is present in high quantities and has high recycling rates in almost all e-waste management routes,” the Global E-Waste Monitor, a partnership between the International Telecommunication Union and the United Nations, reports.
The United States throws away nearly 7 million tons of e-waste each year, and as elsewhere, only the easiest parts, such as iron, are recycled. That’s doubly wasteful because discarded gadgets often end up in landfills, where they can poison soil and water—and because they contain the very rare-earth metals that are so desperately needed in new electronic gadgets.
If the United States could marshal the rare earths sitting around in people’s homes and garbage cans, it could slash its dependence on China and create jobs at home. What’s more, it wouldn’t need to impose a rare-earth arrangement on Ukraine, and it would help rid U.S. communities of toxins seeping out from landfills.
Recycling rare-earth metals is extremely difficult and thus commercially unattractive, which is why it’s not yet being done on a large scale. That’s because rare earths are often used in extremely small quantities; while some EV batteries use many pounds’ worth of rare earths, the combined rare earths in a smartphone typically weigh no more than 2 grams. Most other electronics fit somewhere in between. And each rare earth has to be extracted separately.
But getting rare earths out of retired gadgets ought to be no harder than getting them out of remote and unexplored rock in Ukraine. Three days before leaving office, the Biden administration awarded $5.1 million to REEcycle, a small Houston-based recycling company, to help restart a demonstration facility and “advance commissioning of a commercial facility with an estimated annual production of 50 tons of rare earth oxides.” REEcycle specializes in recycling four rare earths commonly used in aircraft, missiles, submarines, and unpiloted vehicles. (The grant, if not yet paid, may have been canceled by DOGE, but DOGE.gov contains no such update.)
There is, in fact, a massive opportunity in rare-earth recycling. Turbocharging U.S. efforts to recover rare earths would trigger more research and development and more innovation at home, and it would help the United states reduce its dangerous rare-earth dependence on China in a way that harms no other country—and creates a variety of new jobs at home. Once scientists and businesses have developed a commercially viable way of recycling rare earths, the United States could reuse these versatile metals over and over. That’s surely a deal Trump should like. In fact, I can’t think of a reason any American would dislike it.

The Trump import taxes (AKA: tariffs) are being added to prices. Retailers cannot hold off any longer. If you need to buy anything that's imported, you may still be able to get it at the pre-Trump price at some places for a few more days. But act quickly.
Among the levies Trump has imposed is a 10% baseline tariff for most imports and a 30% tariff on most Chinese goods. Some goods, such as steel and aluminum, face higher rates. Many retailers have issued warnings that they won’t, as Trump has suggested, “eat” the additional costs caused by those import taxes. That means anything from groceries and clothing to toys and cars could cost Americans more. Walmart is one of the latest major retailers to say it would sell more expensive goods soon because Trump’s tariffs are “too high.”Other retailers suggesting they could hike prices soon include Ford, Best Buy and others. Here are some of the companies that could raise prices on everyday items – whether or not companies are directly blaming Trump’s tariffs. Walmart Price changes at Walmart will likely take effect by the end of May and prices will increase “much more” in June, the company’s chief financial officer John David Rainey, told CNBC. Mattel Trump threatened Mattel, saying he would “put a 100% tariff on his toys, and he won’t sell one toy in the United States, and that’s their biggest market.” Best Buy Electronics retailer Best Buy warned during a March earnings call that “vendors across our entire assortment will pass along some level of tariff costs to retailers, making price increases for American consumers highly likely.” Some electronic components and devices are temporarily exempt from Trump’s tariffs. That won’t last forever. Shein and Temu “Due to recent changes in global trade rules and tariffs, our operating expenses have gone up. To keep offering the products you love without compromising on quality, we will be making price adjustment starting April 25, 2025,” Temu wrote in a notice similar to an announcement Shein made.
As for fast fashion sellers like Shein, we should not be spending money on that anyway. Fast fashion is horribly wasteful and bad for the planet. It's bad enough to support such industries. It's even worse to buy their products and pay Trump tariffs on top of that. /editorial
Beat Trump by being frugal. And when buying American, make sure the products are union made.
Keep in mind that Trump would not be able to impose these tariffs without the full cooperation of Republicans in the US House and Senate. Capitol Hill Republicans are Trump's willing accomplices.

Core components for NASA's Roman Space Telescope pass major shake test
The core portion of NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has successfully completed vibration testing, ensuring it will withstand the extreme shaking experienced during launch. Passing this key milestone brings Roman one step closer to helping answer essential questions about the role of dark energy and other cosmic mysteries.
"The test could be considered as powerful as a pretty severe earthquake, but there are key differences," said Cory Powell, the Roman lead structural analyst at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "Unlike an earthquake, we sweep through our frequencies one at a time, starting with very low-level amplitudes and gradually increasing them while we check everything along the way. It's a very complicated process that takes extraordinary effort to do safely and efficiently."
The team simulated launch conditions as closely as possible. "We performed the test in a flight-powered configuration and filled the propulsion tanks with approximately 295 gallons of deionized water to simulate the propellant loading on the spacecraft during launch," said Joel Proebstle, who led this test, at NASA Goddard. This is part of a series of tests that ratchet up to 125% of the forces the observatory will experience.
This milestone is the latest in a period of intensive testing for the nearly complete Roman Space Telescope, with many major parts coming together and running through assessments in rapid succession. Roman currently consists of two major assemblies: the inner, core portion (telescope, instrument carrier, two instruments, and spacecraft) and the outer portion (outer barrel assembly, solar array sun shield, and deployable aperture cover).
Now, having completed vibration testing, the core portion will return to the large clean room at Goddard for post-test inspections. They'll confirm that everything remains properly aligned and the high-gain antenna can deploy. The next major assessment for the core portion will involve additional tests of the electronics, followed by a thermal vacuum test to ensure the system will operate as planned in the harsh space environment.
In the meantime, Goddard technicians are also working on Roman's outer portion. They installed the test solar array sun shield, and this segment then underwent its own thermal vacuum test, verifying it will control temperatures properly in the vacuum of space. Now, technicians are installing the flight solar panels to this outer part of the observatory.
The team is on track to connect Roman's two major assemblies in November, resulting in a whole observatory by the end of the year that will then undergo final tests. Roman remains on schedule for launch by May 2027, with the team aiming for as early as fall 2026.

A toothpaste-based transistor is the latest innovation from the research team at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT-Italian Institute of Technology) in Milan, which pushes the boundaries of edible electronics. This innovative nano-device is expected to become a key component of future smart pills, designed to monitor health conditions from within the body and then safely dissolve after completing their function. The research findings have been published in the journal Advanced Science. Several commercial toothpaste formulations contain crystals of copper phthalocyanine, a blue pigment that acts as a whitening agent. This substance is deposited on the teeth, functioning as an optical filter to enhance their whiteness. Throughout the day, copper phthalocyanine is gradually removed by saliva and ingested. The research team at IIT's Center for Nano Science and Technology (CNST) in Milan (Italy) investigated the properties of this substance in collaboration with a dental researcher from the University of Novi Sad in Serbia. Through laboratory simulations and analysis of existing clinical data, they determined that, on average, humans inadvertently ingest about 1 milligram of copper phthalocyanine each time they brush their teeth.

The export of video game controllers from the UK to Russia has been banned as they can be repurposed to pilot drones used to launch attacks on Ukraine.
It is part of a package of around 150 trade sanctions against Russia announced by the Foreign Office on Thursday.
The European Union enforced a similar ban on video games and joysticks earlier this year.
Other technology items used in the defence and energy sectors are among items which can also no longer be exported to Russia, including software used to search for new oil and gas wells.
Sanctions were also announced on exports of chemicals, electronics, machinery and metals to limit Russia's military capability.
This includes electronic circuits and other components that can be used in weapons systems.
"Gaming consoles will no longer be repurposed to kill in Ukraine," Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty said.
He added: "Putin thought he could use British markets to boost his war effort, buying harmless goods and turning them into tools of war - but the UK is exposing and acting on this sinister trade.
"Today's action clamps down on Russia's sneaky trading and deprives Putin of the goods he desperately needs to fight his barbaric war."
He added that cutting off Russia's energy revenues "will drain Putin's war chest".
"And our tough new measures will also degrade Russia's military machine - new export sanctions mean Putin will no longer be able to get his hands on specialist technology used to produce weaponry for his illegal war."
The latest package is part of wider sanctions by the US, UK and EU on Russia, in response to its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Sanctions are penalties imposed by one country on another, to stop them acting aggressively or breaking international law.
The UK also condemned a Russian missile strike on Kyiv that killed nine people and injured dozens overnight on Thursday, one day after Ukrainian, US, UK and European officials met in London to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine.
UK foreign minister David Lammy said on X: "While Ukrainian ministers were in London working towards peace, [President Vladimir] Putin's Russia was attacking the Ukrainian people."

Uncovered: The Ninja Tales
3. Machinedrum - 3FOR82 (2024)
To complete our trilogy of ‘The Ninja Tales’, Part III takes a look at the hidden spot gloss ASCII artwork for Travis Steward's aka Machinedrum’s 11th studio album, 3FOR82 out on Ninja Tune on 24th May 2024. It is reported that Stewart crafted the album during a pilgrimage to Joshua Tree National Park, California, to seek clarity and inspiration, saying, “..I knew that I should, at some point in my life, go out there to work on something creatively.”

Fascinated by the outwardly simple artwork that, in reality has many hidden depths, we caught up with graphic designer and Machinedrum's Creative Director, Joseph Durnan and Ninja Tune’s Head of Production, Sean Preston to understand more about the process for creating the album’s hidden code artwork using The Demoscene. For us mere mortals unfamiliar with The Demoscene, it is an international computer art subculture made up of a worldwide network of creative minds, focused on producing demos: self-contained, sometimes extremely small, computer programs that produce audiovisual presentations.
Joseph told us, “One component we latched onto early was the Demoscene's challenge of keeping file sizes as low as possible while maximising the complexity of the demos. ASCII art, halftoning, and duotone degrading helped express that idea, with legendary demoscener TPOLM's art and Travis' (Machinedrum) personal artefacts from his teenage years acting as source material. The words flooding the sleeve and hidden code are nods to personal messages within Demoscene culture—references to in-jokes, cryptic sayings and messages to other demo makers. I liked how this type of content could either seem conceptual and esoteric to an outsider, or something between total gibberish and a confusing nerdy joke. Blending this with the 3FOR82 process involved using personal numbers related to birth dates, in-studio references among the album collaborators, and redundant information about the WAV files for the album tracks.”

Accompanying the record is a 16-page boutique zine. Joseph explains, “The accompanying zine goes deeper into the archival aspect, including rules from a quest-style video game imagined by Machinedrum as a child and a transcript from his first-ever interview. It also features nostalgic cyber-culture-style artwork contributions from Sensory Works and bitmapped photos from studio shoots with Tinashe and AK the Saviour.”
The limited edition translucent yellow glow vinyl edition, includes an alternative Dinked album art oversleeve and Joseph told us more about this, “For the limited edition Dinked art, TDR's Ian Anderson "3FOR82" font was degraded via an online ASCII art converter, overlaid with the T-26 font "Bias” for the MACHINEDRUM type. The font non-coincidentally looks good with Ian's logotype because a lot of the T26 foundry's typefaces made their way into his designs in the 90s and early 00s - which is widely held up as an era defining body of work within that world. Something definitive of the visual language of electronic music was how much of the artwork developed with technology, mirroring the way the Demoscene visuals have mutated over the past 30 years.”

Ninja Tune’s Head of Production, Sean Preston worked alongside Durnan on the album artwork and gave us his insight into the creative process.
He told us, “I think if anyone else other than Joe had come to me with the premise for the latest Machinedrum album I would’ve done all I could to put them off, but having suffered under the designer’s collaboration for several years, I was all too aware of his penchant for ASCII art, glitchy graphics, and secret gifts/traps buried deep within pixel data for me to find. Sometimes, where you land with the final packaging on a record, is more pleasing or rewarding because of the pitfalls laid before it, most of which in this instance we couldn’t have known ahead of the course.” 
Sean explains, "Initially pencilled for manufacture in Ireland, we had to pivot to printing some of the sleeves there, stickers, zine booklet and o-card (for the Dinked edition) in three separate locations in the UK, and pressing the vinyl in France. The danger in working that way is that most printers have their own calibration settings for sleeves and o-card sizes. It also presents a risk to hitting colour consistency across the print parts. Getting printers to talk about these things with each other isn’t always a harmonious of fruitful pursuit, but with a good amount of physical proofing, some nervy stress tests, the record comes together really well.”

We asked more about the 16 page zine insert and Sean explained, “The zine booklet, complete with French folds, feels like a real artefact, centring the artwork’s ambition on an uncoated offset paper and card. The outer sleeve is 6-colour, utilising a bright Pantone Green and Pantone Orange against a CMYK composite, overlaid with a blind spot varnish. A blind varnish is a varnish that doesn’t necessarily correspond to the colour artwork it is printed on. Often when you see this, the blind varnish is vibrant, blind only in name, and usually employed as large block text, which requires a certain level of legibility. I visited the printer near Dublin specifically to get the right amount of subtlety to the overlaid varnish. Because of the miniscule, dotted areas occupied by the varnish, the traditional method of varnishing wasn’t going to give us the fine detail desired. The beauty of working with the sort of printer we did (AngloPrinters in Drogheda, around 45 mins north of Dublin) is that they are experienced and agile enough to recognise intention and move to solutions that benefit the artistic purpose. The finished sleeve now holds a finely detailed varnish that is present in light, but subtle enough to maintain the overall clandestine aesthetic that pervades the album’s artwork and music.”

He’s Spider-Man right? He’s gotta have a spider Pokémon. There are a few different spider Pokémon I just think Ariados suits him the best.
Miguel raised Ariados for his research and experiments to re-create Spider-Man’s powers. After the lab accident which gave Miguel his powers, he takes Ariados home with him.
Ariados does not like Miguel at first but they do eventually grow closer and make a great vigilante team.

A while ago someone made a poll asking what kind of pets Xina and Miguel would have. I couldn't quite pin down if they were a dog/cat/lizard/squirrel couple but I knew for sure they were an Espeon/Umbreon couple.

Xina and Charizard are really close, with Charizard being Xina’s starter Pokémon raised from a Charmander.
Charizard does not like Miguel. Xina may be willing to forgive Miguel but for Charizard it’s an on-sight flamethrower to the face.

The “lore” around Rotom in the Pokémon franchise itself is interesting. Rotom is a ghost-type Pokémon that can inhabit and “possess” appliances. Rotom originally seemed to be a sort of mischievous poltergeist, but in the latest entries in the franchise it seems to come with and be an essential working component of some electronics like phones and pcs. The Rotom inside the Pokedex even talks.
So essentially in this AU Lyla is a Rotom. She still takes the form of the Lyla we all know and love but the reason Lyla sometimes feels like a sentient being with thoughts and feelings is because…she is. Inside the box that contains “Lyla” there is a Pokémon.
Miguel had no idea that Lyla was a Pokémon until he brought her to Xina.
Lyla-Rotom is an Electric/Fairy type.

latest Freddie DeBoer seems odd. It's very focused on a sort of consumer-facing understanding of technology for a lot of its runtime. He's not wrong that the changes are smaller than they were in the 1800's but like. That's the low hanging fruit, we all know this, the jump from "not having trains" to "having trains" beats almost any improvement in "trains"
A major change technology has brought to the modern world imo is heavily streamlined manufacturing all across the industrial stack.
If you read like, Bunie Huang's Made in China blog series, in the early 2000's getting a piece of technology made required enormous in-person investment of time and effort working with your manufacturing teams across a pretty broad number of suppliers and industries, you had to get PCB's made, components sourced, moulds designed and set up for injection.
I know people manufacturing small to medium run commercial and industrial electronics, and I did that at my last job. You order machine populated PCB's from your favourite Chinese PCB solutions provider over a web form. If you need ten thousand buttons, you can get that delivered with three emails. Hell, if you want a custom genome to use for some experimental bioreactor, there's multiple competing suppliers who will mail you plasmids that you can customise from online templates and you don't even have to talk to anyone.
And that's just mass manufacturing. If you're making a few thousand of some high end medical equipment, or still in the development phase of design, you can order a titanium laser print to be delivered by the end of the week, or run off a dozen prototypes on your company's fleet of printers using body safe plastics.
Consumer needs don't change much because people are people, we have limited capacity to need things and do things. I've long said that no human can digest more than 50Mbps of media in real time, really. One home cook can only economise their movements so much. A food processor and a pressure cooker can save you some time but the solution to"I want to spend less time cooking at home" will eventually become "don't cook at home, lean on industrial manufacturing of food" and that's fine. There's only so much tech can improve your individual experience before you become the bottleneck.
Faster computers sure, means you can edit video on your phone a little quicker (also hey people ARE editing video on their phone, despite what this blog post says) but it also means Netflix can serve their 4 Petabytes of video library at 400+Gbps from a single server occupying less than 50 liters of space.
It seems disingenuous to act like consumer products feeling stagnant means technology is stagnant.
