Representative Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican, took to Twitter on Sunday afternoon to complain about the Black National Anthem being performed during the Super Bowl.

Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph is slated to perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing," colloquially known as the Black National Anthem, ahead of the Sunday night football game. The song, written more than 100 years ago, emerged as a rallying cry during the civil rights movement, according to the NAACP. The NFL began including the song in its games following the Black Lives Matter protests that occurred during the summer of 2020, but the move has faced backlash from some conservatives.

Boebert became the latest prominent Republican to criticize the National Football League (NFL) over the song's inclusion, which will be performed alongside the "Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful." The GOP lawmaker accused the league of attempting to "divide" Americans by including the Black National Anthem in the performance lineup.

"America only has ONE NATIONAL ANTHEM," she tweeted. "Why is the NFL trying to divide us by playing multiple!? Do football, not wokeness."

Critics argued, however, that Boebert's tweet was more divisive than the inclusion of the performance. Condé Nast editor Luke Zaleski accused Boebert of "gaslighting" viewers.

"The gaslighting is the fact that she's using the concept of unity to divide. She's doing what she's accusing the NFL of. It's a fake grievance contrived to irk and produce the effect of further fracturing society," Zaleski tweeted.

"It's black history month. The song is meaningful to African Americans. It's also a historic game with 2 black quarterbacks, the first time ever. Get over yourself and your ridiculous white grievances. If you don't like it, don't watch. Simple," another Twitter user tweeted on Sunday in response to Boebert.

Other conservatives have previously criticized the NFL over the song. In 2021, Fox News host Sean Hannity decried a performance as an attempt to "inject politics into sports." Several conservative pundits also complained when Vanessa Williams performed the song during a PBS Fourth of July special that same year.

WHAT IS THE BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM?

NAACP leader James Weldon Smith first wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing" in 1900. His brother, John Rosamond Johnson, composed the music for its lyrics, according to the NAACP.

The song was first performed by students at a segregated school in Jacksonville, Florida, to celebrate the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who presided over the emancipation of slaves during the American Civil War, according to the NAACP.

The song became a landmark of African American culture. According to Time magazine, it was performed during meetings in which civil rights leaders planned the Montgomery Bus Boycott and has been quoted in speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Following the 2020 racial protests after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police, the NFL sought to confront what many players have described as systemic racism following years of protests.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told The New York Times in 2021 that the inclusion of the song is "an opportunity to highlight messages that are important to the league, players and personnel and our communities."

"We've seen tremendous work done by our players to make an impact, and we can increase that through the high-visibility platform that the NFL provides," he said.

Newsweek reached out to Boebert's press office for further comment.

For someone like me who never cared about a celebrity's personal life and never will, I feel this is the best time to be a fan of Henry. Finally he's free from DC studios and their cgi faces, he's free from Lauren's tw and the vast majority of the fan base is with him (100% of the comments on the official trailer are just praise for him and hate for the writing), he is working with talented directors and he's preparing his own universe not to mention that he looks better than ever (love these curls and stubble).

On the contrary, I feel we're at the worse time to be fans of Henry.

-I don't enjoy the arguments about whether he was fired or not (he was) and people questioning his acting skills

-I don't appreciate the rumors about why he left people talking sh*t about him (it makes my blood boil but I don't have the energy to argue about that)

-And mainly, I don't appreciate the way he's been treating the fandom. He ignores us and blames it on us because he's sh*t at keeping his private life private. Don't want people to talk about your personal life and speculate about it? Then keep it private! Don't share information about your girlfriend, don't follow her instagram (you didn't do it with the others, Henry). Tell your girlfriend that for privacy reasons it should be best to make her Instagram private, instead of getting a verification and start acting like an influencer, posting personal stuff, like doxing the rentals and the new house. And she should stop posting the hour she's living in to let us know she's in the Uk, when her job is in LA, so we confirm she's abusing her privilage to work and probably Uk work visa indications -she's not there because is needed for her job, she's there because she needs to be with him to be important. Without Henry she's a nobody, just another high executive for a company (if you doubt me about this, ask yourself how many TV Vice Presidents for entertainment companies do you know and how many have verified accounts?)

(Go to her social media and you'll see almost every post since April 2021 is somehow related to Henry)

She's acting like an entitled *sshole and we just have to be quiet and let the influencer wannabe influence. And even if we just let her do her f*cking influencing, we're still punished by him because a loud minority just can't stay quiet, when the problem wouldn't be a problem if he at the start of the relationship would've just said to her "Look, some fans are very, passionate and, some of them might attack you, like it happened with my exes, so the best thing would be for you to go private on social media so they don't harass you and your friends and family. Just that, just private your social media so people won't find information about you." But of course, he didn't, because deep inside he knows that's the real reason why she's with him. It took her only a few days after articles about their dating were published for her to get her verification checkmark (in order to get verified, she needed to provide three links to articles that talk about her). And after verification, she started to share fanart like an influencer.

And to the people who didn't interact with her social media (or his when he was posting things related to her, which is all he posts now, aside from trailers, posters, or ads) but complain on our freaking blogs or fan spaces, we're gaslighted to believe is OUR FAULT that he's always because we're not acting like the good girl daddy wants us to act like...we're brats so daddy is punishing us until we behave properly. And the ones who do what daddy wants us to do, when they don't get the reward for acting like a good girl, blame others when in reality this is all his own fault, for not keeping things private like he knows he should, and because he doesn't suck it up that some fans will always treat his girlfriends badly (it happened with Tara and Lucy and other and at the time it wasn't a problem for him to interact with fans)

So, to sum up, no it's not the best time to be Henry's fan. It's because of Kal and the hope someday he'll be back to the man he was before this sh*t show that keeps me in the fandom.

CELEBRATING 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIP HOP, THE MUSEUM AT FIT PRESENTS FRESH, FLY, AND FABULOUS: FIFTY YEARS OF HIP HOP STYLE

The Museum at FIT (MFIT) presents Fresh, Fly, and Fabulous: Fifty Years of Hip Hop Style, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip hop. The largest and most comprehensive exhibition to explore this revolutionary and influential style, this also marks the first time that the museum examines fashion exclusively through one musical genre. Over 100 garments and accessories capture the pivotal moments in hip hop fashion’s evolution, ranging from Kangol hats to custom Dapper Dan jackets and the Manolo Blahnik Okla Alta booties inspired by Timberland work boots. The exhibition is curated by Elena Romero, journalist and assistant chair of Marketing Communications at FIT, and Elizabeth Way, associate curator of costume at MFIT. Romero is the author of “Freestylin’: How Hip Hop Changed the Fashion Industry (2012).”

“It was important for The Museum at FIT to organize this exhibition, because hip hop—the most influential music genre of our era—has had such a profound impact on the world of fashion,” notes Dr. Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, MFIT. “Furthermore, hip hop fashion and music are cultural expressions of the African and Hispanic cultural diasporas, which MFIT seeks to amplify as part of our goal to expand the understanding of fashion.”

Visitors will see looks worn and made popular by artists Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LL Cool J, Chuck D, Missy Elliot, Aaliyah, Khaled, and Cardi B, to name just a few. A Famous Face that Started the Journey to End a Disease

For nonprofit organizations, reaching an outside audience is essential to helping spread awareness about their cause and getting people to support it. By having social media platforms available for people to access, nonprofits are able to reach a new audience to share their message, give updates on their progress, and give users access to important information and ways to help.

A nonprofit organization that really resonates with me is the Michael J. Fox Foundation. As many people know, the famous actor Michael J. Fox has been living with Parkinson's since he was 29 years old. Parkinson's is a disease that affects the movement of the body, and it gets worse over time to the point where many have trouble moving or talking. I have a grandfather who has Parkinson’s and has struggled with it for as long as I can remember. It has been hard watching this disease slowly ravage his body. He has gone from just having trembling hands to not being able to lift his head up anymore. Most of his movement is gone, and he remains in a wheelchair. Like many others, I want an end to this disease. The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s mission statement on their website says that they are “dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today.”

According to an article on Empower Agency’s website, “According to the Giving Report, 29% of people consider social media to be the communication tool that most inspires giving.” I first started by looking at the foundation’s Instagram page; its username is michaeljfoxorg. Their Instagram appears to be very active, with over 2,000 posts and a pretty large following of 170k followers. Most posts get about a few hundred likes, but the ones that actually show Michael J. Fox get around a few thousand likes. Many posts, including the most recent ones, show the progress the organization has made towards helping those with Parkinson’s. The foundation’s Facebook page has an even bigger following, with 919k followers. Some posts get fewer likes, however, with many having less than 100 likes. But, like Instagram, there are still many posts that get into the hundreds and thousands. Finally, I looked at the Twitter account for the foundation. It has 101k followers and 24.6k tweets. Aside from a few popular tweets, most of the tweets posted on the account have less than 100 likes and very few retweets. All three social media sites seem to be very active, with new posts almost every day or week, and many posts are repeats, as in, the same important news is shared on all three platforms.

When it comes to improving the number of people who interact with the accounts and the posts, there are a few ways they could improve them. From what I noticed, on all three platforms, the posts that got the most likes were the ones that, unsurprisingly, had Michael J. Fox in them. While he is the face and founder of the organization, many know him as Marty McFly from the popular franchise, Back to the Future. Fox is a well-known celebrity, and it makes sense why the content most interacted with is the one that displays his sweet face. I think that while the platforms could use him more often to improve their metrics, I do think that they use him in the most appropriate amount to focus more on their cause than the well-known figure. In fact, many of their posts are very informative, including interesting ones. They also give a voice to many people who have Parkinson’s and allow them to speak about their struggles with the disease. While you could say that the sites could hop on trends to draw in a younger audience, their cause is a serious one, and I appreciate how they are dedicated and focused on their cause. One way that I personally think would be good is for more celebrities who also have Parkinson’s or know someone with it to appear every once in a while on the social media sites and give their story or ask for more support in helping the cause. Also, I noticed that they could use more hashtags, as some posts only have a few and some do not have any. Overall, though, I think that the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s social media is run very well. No matter how much engagement they get, they keep their followers well informed and educated.

For improving certain metrics on the platforms, it is important to monitor how the numbers increase, decrease, or make no adjustments. Any posts that lead to more people following the accounts, visiting their website, or donating should be watched and highlighted when they happen. It is important to note these changes in numbers so that they know what gets them more engaged. As I said before, just having the face of the organization helps improve the numbers. They can also monitor engagement on temporary things like stories on Instagram and Facebook, which usually last 24 hours. There, it is possible to see the number of people viewing the story. Lastly, it is important to focus on the comments of those following the accounts. Going through Instagram and Twitter, I did not notice any negative comments or any simple questions, but if there were, it is important for the social media platforms to respond and take into consideration what their followers are asking or thinking. According to the Nonprofits Source article, “55% of people who engage with nonprofits on Twitter end up taking some sort of action.” and “75% of Instagram users take action, such as visiting a website or making a purchase after looking at an Instagram advertising post.”

The Michael J. Fox Foundation has given users all they need to stay informed and keeps engagement up by sharing important people and events. Not only is it a great nonprofit to support, but it also gives me hope that one day there will be an end to Parkinson’s.

2023 The Mid South Recap

The gravel event season shifted into high gear this past weekend at The Mid South, a grueling but exhilarating gravel biking and endurance running challenge that takes participants across the rolling, red dirt roads of Stillwater, Oklahoma. This year competitors were treated to warm temperatures and fast roads. BikeFlights’ team members Kerry Werner and Michael Potter were there to work the expo and compete in the event.

The annual migration to The Mid South starts with a gathering of industry brands and packet pickup at the event’s expo. Calm winds and moderate temperatures created a welcoming environment where the gravel community could come together from all over the U.S. and catch up after the long off season. 

BikeFlights' newest team member and Event and Marketing Support Specialist Kerry Werner and Partnerships Director Michael Potter spent the expo day connecting with current and future BikeFlights shippers among the nearly 2,500 like-minded people celebrating the ride that would follow the next day.  

Race day featured sunny skies, warm temperatures and strong winds. The pace was fast over what were smooth, dry roads, causing the field to break into many smaller groups. As the winds pushed out of the south, it challenged riders from every direction as they pedaled clockwise around the course throughout the day. 

In the men’s race, the deciding move occurred 89 miles into the 100-mile course. A sandy, twisty mountain bike trail section took the lead group of 12 down to three. Payson McElveen, John Borstelman and BikeFlights’ own Kerry Werner emerged from the trails and sprinted for the top three podium spots, crossing the line in that order. 

The women’s race was shaken up halfway through the race when the leader was held up at a railroad crossing by an unfortunately timed freight train. During the delay the top five women regrouped. Keeping calm and continuing to push the pace, Lauren De Crescenzo would again ride away from her competitors to repeat her 2022 victory with her teammate Caroline Wreszin claiming second place and Heather Jackson rounding out the last podium spot.

In the event’s first-ever non-binary category, Rach McBride claimed victory by riding a consistent, strong effort from start to finish. Apollo Leonard and Sam Hansen completed the podium in second and third places.

Special congratulations to BikeFlights Team Members Justin Barr and Zach Heyer who spontaneously decided to ride the 100-mile route after originally registering for the 50-mile route. Both pushed themselves hard and finished in impressive form.

Lastly, BikeFlights Brand Ambassadors Jessica Brunson, Maria Doering, Enzo Moscarella and Sarah Bowman inspired us with their efforts in the 50, 100 and ‘the double’ routes. Congratulations to you all!

I'm very, very depressed.

I'm seeing my therapist today, and I'll talk it all through. I'm not going to do anything to myself. The depression is situational. It will end or fade when the situation changes.

I mean, none of that stops the SH/SI gremlins on my shoulders from whispering that it will never get better and this is just all there is.

People - strangers even - have been asking me if I'm all right. I think I must have Resting Sad Face now.

Normally, I have brunch with friends once a month on a Friday. It used to be weekly. Well, originally, it was me and my friend Anne from church. We'd read the book of Ruth for Bible study group and felt like we wanted to cultivate a relationship like Ruth and Naomi - two women who were not lovers but were deeply committed to each other and each other's wellbeing and happiness. So we started meeting up weekly - gosh, three or four years ago? It was well before Covid, anyway. Maybe early 2019.

Anyway, so we started meeting and it was lovely, and eventually we had some new people join our Bible study group, and we invited Laura (who's quite a lot older - like parent age for us) to join us, and it was really, really nice. For awhile, there were several people joining us, including Izzy, who is Anne's close friend and business partner. And then Covid happened, Laura moved to be closer to her daughter, people's maternity leave ended, all that sort of thing, and then it was just me and Anne... and Izzy.

Slowly brunch has become the Anne and Izzy's Business Brunch with Special Appearance by Lauren.

I've really tried to become friends with Izzy, too, but there's just this feeling of like, Izzy has a very full life with lots of friends and family and I'm 100% not needed or particularly wanted. Not needed as in I need someone like Lauren to save me!!! but needed as in Lauren's perspective is very valuable to me and I think I need someone like her in my life, but even if I don't need her, I am interested to know what she thinks. You know?

Izzy is the kind of person who doesn't think about anyone who is not physically in front of her, demanding her attention, and I can't deal with that. It feels childish and rude and inconsiderate.

And the thing is, I really have genuinely tried. I've invited Anne and Izzy and their respective partners for games nights, movie nights, the whole shebang, and Anne mostly says "yes, we'd love to, I can do dates XYZ", and Izzy says "Let me look at John's shift schedule!" and then has literally never, ever gotten back to me. This has happened at least six times in the last six months. I did the nudges and everything. I felt like I was properly begging them to Do Friend Things.

I tried to blow it off (not very successfully), but I'm not stupid. I follow them both on social media and Izzy posts loads of social stuff she does with Anne and their other friends. She clearly can plan stuff, she just doesn't want to with me.

Then last month, she said she was going to host a little birthday celebration for her toddler on a Sunday afternoon, and I and my husband were going to be invited. Great, that's lovely. Except she didn't send me any details at all. I had to ask two times, my messages went unread, and then Anne offered to follow up with Izzy for me while they were at work and I said sure, if she felt like that would be better.

Ultimately, I got no details about this until the literal day of the party and I was sat in Stafford Park with my husband and I saw the message and we started heading back their way, and in the car, I burst into tears and said I didn't want to go, I couldn't deal with it anymore. My husband said, OK then, we won't go. Let's go somewhere else instead, and we ended up driving to the seaside (for a grand total of one hour).

I just couldn't do it. I couldn't face being the fucking dork who'd set aside the whole fucking day just in case the 'popular' girl texted details of a party I was invited to. I'm 35 fucking years old, I'm long past being the dork chasing after cheerleaders to be my friends.

So I spent last night crying silently in bed, wondering if our brunch has run its course, and it made my stomach hurt so badly I thought I was going to be sick or wake up with a migraine.

I have also been accompanied by the thought of, Well, but what if this is just depression talking and I'm about to throw away something good because I feel like shit and I want to self-destruct so badly?

This has, without exaggeration, been the worst two months of my life. I feel like I'm drowning. All I want to do is sit outside in the twilight, smoking and staring into space. But time keeps passing and I keep not buying cigarettes.
