Actually The Substance is basically that Junji Ito story Layers of Fear. Mrs Soya being so obsessed with her daughter’s beauty and when Reimi gets into an accident it’s revealed that underneath her skin she gets younger and younger until she removes so much skin from her daughter that she turns into this grotesque elongated monster with a toddler face and then the mom tries to cut her own face off to make herself look younger and in the end they’re just disfigured shut ins. I don’t know read the story and it’ll make sense

Playing Layers of Fear everytime feels like coming home. I know it's supposed to be a horrorgame, and I looooove the scares in this game, because some still get me after playing it already a couple of times, but the moment I start the game and stand in the lobby, I feel like I just arrived back home... The rain sounds, the atmosphere, the music. Ugh I love it so much. And even after playing it through couple of times, I still find new rooms, new paths, new scares. And so it never gets boring.

Also, I'm so glad that I decided to play the game today, because apparently only on Halloween theres an extra room with an ouija board, where you can type random words, that have to do with the game and something happens. I literally just learned about that today, after I found this room. I was like "hey this is new?" And googled it and was like "damn that's cool!" and then I was prolly over an hour just playing with the board, trying to find words with a reaction.

Hiii I was actually the anon that mentioned Layers of Fear !! I did so bc the game features pretty cool macabre art actually,, since you play as like this tortured artist (no spoilers don't worry) and discover what he's done through the game ; and you have to complete a painting, which has multiple phases that go from abstract macabre to just horror macabre and I love it

(but it also features already existing art in the house) The game just revolves around art as a whole too, and as a horror game it does a pretty good job at utilizing it in my opinion

I think one of my fav horror tropes is the “Layers of fear”/“PT” trope where you move through an old house/hallway that gets progressively more fucked up the more you continue.

I couldn’t find anywhere selling a replica of the painting from Layers of Fear so decided to just do it for myself to hang on my wall! It was a lot of fun and I’ve never done gore before so it was good practice too! (the painting is from scratch but is as copy a close as I could get to the one from the game, I do not own any rights to the game etc. Also just for fun not to sell anyway)
