Do you see this shit Lesly?
Oops, all Lesly’s part 2: electric boogaloo. With a sprinkling of Barrett thrown in. Last sketches are just me being too silly about them.👉👈

Listen I super hate capitalism too but how many of you pro-communists actually consider the oppression carried out in its name before you wear it as a badge of honor

Ah sometimes when patients don't speak English they give me the paperwork they got from the clinic/hospital they went to and i figure it out anyway i put the packet in front of my face and like bam! Suddenly all cyrillic! except their name is written in english. So I thought of my Russian friend I haven't heard from since they told me about the war

Hi there and welcome to my blog! Will you accompany me on my (language) journey?
Tumblr media
You can call me Seher and this is my sideblog for all things language related. My main blog is seherling but I rarely use it, maybe one day if I will dust it off if I ever start making art again, though I follow and reply to comments with it
I enjoy discovering new music, video games and reading manga and sometimes books! Some of my favourites are Mushishi (if you can't tell), Mononoke and Gangsta
Languages I know: German (N), English (B2/C1 idk), Japanese* (N4?) Languages of interest: Czech (dabbling), Dutch, Icelandic
*main focus

wow very cool. as a european i am learning a lot about the us navy and defense and everything from your blog haha! idk if you've answered this before but what made you wanna work in defense?
Russia invading ukraine on my birthday lol. though i was always interested in military history/military fiction even as a kid. that was just the watershed moment for me personally
i don’t want to work IN defense though. I want to write ABOUT defense. still not sure what that looks like exactly for me. move to DC definitely. maybe get a position at one of the twenty trillion trade publications there are around here. Or comms job, govt job, journalism job… not sure. hopefully i will figure it out ! would love to write fiction for a living but im realistic enough to know that’s an oxymoron
(Also, side note, i am very flattered, & i know i say this somewhat often but i feel the need to repeat it every once in a while… please don’t take anything i say on this blog / ESPECIALLY in my writing as fact. i misrepresent stuff and get stuff wrong all the time, sometimes on purpose for story reasons. I try my best but i simply lack experience & worldview and have spent functionally zero time being an Adult or having to deal with Adult topics [still do not know what a 401k is!]. for instance if you even mention the words “security clearance” or “congressional confirmation hearing” in the general vicinity of my fics, the plot, nay, the entire CONCEPT, goes up in flames, as i discuss in this post. i really appreciate this comment don’t get me wrong But there are definitely better/more accurate places to learn about these topics than a 20y.o. A&D intern who is only just beginning their career & is still confused about many of the basics of real life. I have a lot of growing up still left to do & you really don’t have to listen to me)

I feel like the only reason people make Greg half-Jewish is because of his last name tbh
i’m embarrassed bc i didn’t even think of that….. i’ve headcanoned characters as jewish for less so if that’s your reasoning that’s valid (although a lot of stereotypically jewish last names are also had by german/german-descended gentiles, and hirsch is german, but also tv characters are fake and someone made them up)
however sometimes i get the vibe that people introducing a minority status to greg to make him more sympathetic/less connected to the roy bullshit (on a related note i think it would be super interesting to explore anti-catholic sentiments in the us throughout the 20th century and how they relate to logan’s identity as a Self-Made Man but that’s another post). on one hand giving further reasons for greg to be as othered as he is from the rest of his family is interesting, but on the other hand there are already existing reasons in canon (logan/ewan feud, physical proximity, age difference, etc) and sometimes i just get an icky feeling since greg gets woobified so often by the fandom, especially in favor of shipping him with tom, and the actual canon elements of his character are replaced by fanon that becomes basically original fiction so i feel justified in holding a little bit of skepticism towards jewish greg as a jew myself
so one side of me is saying i’m right and i’m smart and cool but if you think greg’s jewish and you want me to go fuck myself. cool ig you go do that

like it when people say things like "Wow, you have a nice writing style" or "what an interesting style". I mean, I'm INCREDIBLY flattered, but it's so fun and unusual mostly because...
It's a translation. Which means that Ukrainian is actually very suitable for literary writing: I love playing with the number of synonyms, or words whose cognates are based solely on the situation, or long, convoluted sentences that can be put on a page without repetition or connecting words. In English, of course, you can do most of these things too, but it usually tends to be simplified to be understood by everyone, which is incredible, which is why it's an international language.
But because of these not-so-unique features of English, a text translated from Ukrainian may sound unusually interesting to a native speaker.
No, I have my own style, of course (at least I hope so), but it's always so interesting to see how the text changes after translation and when I edit it, because don't think that I just copy and paste it through a translator. I always check how accurately the text is translated, because my level of English is more than enough to do that.
A rather interesting example: I was looking for synonyms for "I mean" in English, and after trying at least three synonyms in Ukrainian, it still remained "I mean" in translation.
And also, if I write something for you on writing prompts, it will most likely be a translation, so I think this is a pretty interesting detail of my writing to talk about a little bit more.

Hello! Sorry, but as a native russian speaker 'Алёнка' can't be translated as 'little deer' at all💀. A deer is 'олень', a little deer would be 'оленёнок'. 'Алёнка' is a diminutive form of a name 'Алёна', hence the girl, not a 'babushka' on the cover of the chocolate bar...
Oh you're all good! I'm not native to Russia or Ukraine (I'm from the US) and I haven't taken a Russian class since I was 5 years old, so most of my Russian was learned from listening to my Ukrainian family since childhood (they can speak both Russian and Ukrainian) so I'm not too keen on the technical stuff of the language, but can still speak it fairly fluently, as well as read it and translate. I can't write in Russian though, my handwriting isn't good enough for that.

the lack of friends of my own age is kind of killing me, everyone from school (+ the one newer friend i made last year) is in their 20s so not only do they feel too young for me but i'm also pretty sure they find me too old and boring as well so nobody's interested in knowing me (and i mean it. i've been in the same class for 3 years now and have had project groupwork and everything and not a single person even cares to have lunch with me after class ever) and then at work everyone is 35+ and have children and family homes in the countryside so obviously they won't be my friends who'd hang out with me in my city. too busy taking their school aged children to football practice and all that.
how hard can it be to just have A FRIEND in this fuckin economy
