I think part of the reason I can’t connect with the hoo characters because they’re all relatively new and young to the demigod life and yet they’re supposedly on par with Percy, Annabeth and Jason (I have my gripes with Jason cause we know virtually nothing about him but whatever we know that he was training since he was in diapers so I’ll take it).

Like, ya’ll remember 12 year old Percy? He was cornered and hurt and desperate on the arch and all he could think to do was pray to his father for help and jump. And sea of monsters? Hoo percy would have that in a choke hold but baby Percy was so stressed and panicked he couldn’t control the water, his own element. And botl? He straight up ran from him when Kronos came out of the sarcophagus, like he didn’t even try to fight.

Yes his badass moments are in a league of their own but they’re so good because we see him grow. We see a scared and angry kid to turn into a powerful, level-headed warrior and commander. It’s satisfying to watch him grow into the legend that he later on becomes.

Annabeth is a trained warrior too, more than most campers, gets more confident in her abilities, proves herself to her mother, to the gods, a feat she spent years training for.

Jason is….something, I’m sure [insert conjecture here]. He’s a leader. He’s a solid fighter. We haven’t seen any of his feats first hand but ehh at least he got an identity crisis.

But Hazel, Leo, Piper and Frank are, like, insecure one page and dominating the next one. Hazel is a witch now cause why not and only for half a scene, and Frank is blessed by mars, had a makeover to boot, and chocked a god, very sailor moon of him. Both have been demigods for five to six months.

Leo is just an engineer, he’s not much of a fighter so I can maybe let this one go but that’s no excuse for his arc. A demigod out on a world saving quest, mind you, isn’t issued a measly weapon, but he got a girlfriend so that evens out I guess? And Piper? She’s a strong enough fighter to fight multiple monsters at once, something we don’t see our original characters do until they’ve had multiple years of experience, but that’s fine she’s had one quest under her belt she can take five harpies at once. Both have been demigods for less than a year.

It’s so jarring it takes me out of the story sometimes and as much as I think they had potential, it’s not enough.

Casey Junior with fever flushed cheeks, dozing on Raph's lap. CJ in a loose piggy back as Cassandra carried him on a long trek. Casey holding Donnie's hand in the med bay, asleep against the lip of the mattress. And Sensei singing this song, stroking his hair, carrying him through the death of everyone they loved.

We the people don’t utilize the fact that it is stated Jason is immune to lightning, like he starts smoking a little and is dazed for a second, then he just goes right back to kicking ass. I don’t care what anyone says when he flipped his coin sword and went “my turn.” I understand Piper Leo and Reyna, I would’ve also been kicking my feet and twirling my hair for that white boy.

So...what do we think of the way lab rats handled Taylor's disability? Personally, I think they did a decent job narratively. They steered away from "this is a sci-fi type of show so we can just 'fix' the disability". The visor Douglas made for her basically functions like a cane would, except its more compact and on her face, but all it does is tell her when an obstacle is in front of her...like a cane would. She's still blind. That doesn't go away. Taylor goes on missions again as the hero she is, even with her disability. She's disabled and she can go on missions.

I say narratively because there were a few comments about "a newbie, a quitter and a blind girl!" and with how Leo wanted the doctors to "fix it", but as far as Leo's comments go, he mostly felt guilty about his actions altering her way of life forever, which it did.

Seriously, what do we think? I'm not physically disabled myself, but I'm taking a class where we talk about this stuff and I was reminded of this Taylor plotline recently. I've been thinking about this all day.
