A quick tutorial on how to Download Fics from AO3

After making this poll about the panic that comes when Archive of Our Own goes down, there seems to be a chunk of folks who didn't know they could download fics for offline use, or don't know how to go about it. Here's a quick tutorial for that.

You do not need an AO3 account (unless the fic you are trying to download is restricted to AO3 users only) you only need an internet connection and a device to download to, whether it's PC or a phone.

These instructions work for both desktop and mobile. At the top of the fic, where the chapter index is, there will be the download option on the right side, and an 'Entire Work' button the left side.

For One-Shots: Go ahead and click the download button.

For multiple chapter fics: In order to have the fic download all together instead of downloading each chapter individually, make sure you select the 'Entire Work' button. Like the names says, it displays the entire work on the webpage, and will download the entire fic with all it's chapters in the correct order when you go to download.

Click the download button. You've got a couple of options:

AZW3 - Amazon-developed ebook format that is designed for Kindles and Amazon's systems. Good if you want to read off of a kindle.

EPUB - Standard file format for Ebooks and is basically used as the default for pretty much most ebook readers. This is what I prefer to use when downloading to my phone.

MOBI - An older version of the AZW3. Older but standard as well.

PDF - Downloads the fics as a PDF. Can be read anywhere you can open a PDF.

HTML - Downloads an offline version of the exact webpage you are looking at. Fine if you want to keep the 'look' of AO3 but you can't change the text size or reading style like you can with ebook formats.

Not sure which one to download? Use EPUB since it's standard and readable by pretty much everything, retains images too.

You now have your fic downloaded to your device and can read it on whatever reading app you have. YAY!

Do keep in mind that these are offline files that do not synch with Archive. So if you download an ongoing fic that updates or is edited since you last downloaded, you will need to download it again to have the updated version.

My summer break is tragically over and it seems that I've come back to bot activity on my main fic, Chaos for the Fly. I have no idea what's happening, but according to my research (reddit bc I can't find anything about it anywhere else) the only way to stop it is by "archive locking" it. This means if you are not an AO3 logged in user, you will no longer be able to see it. If you don't have an AO3 account, try getting an invitation. I'll temporarily turn on my messaging here if you would like the PDF download. Note: I don't use Tumblr daily (weekly...monthly) so if I don't respond right away, I'll get it to you the next time I log in - since I'm offering, I'll try to log on here somewhat frequently.

If anyone has other suggestions for removing a bot, please advise. I've seen it called the "kudos bot" and "AO3 web crawler" on reddit but cannot find any reason why it targeted my story, nor how to undo what it did.

Also I am no closer to updating CftF's sequel and this certainly isn't motivating to do so.

how to build a chair........... director's cut ∠( ᐛ 」∠)__ this is about to be a very long very self-indulgent post where i just talk about my own writing. i also doodled on all the pages i think it makes the whole thing more fun to go thru. welcome to my ted talk

SIKE before i begin. credit where credit is due, this post was the start of it all. it changed my brain chemistry my jaw was dropped i was in awe i was obsessed and before i even finished it i knew that i would eventually have to make something similar for the commander or else i would be cursed to think about it for the rest of my life. and i Was cursed for like two years every day i would just be like........ is today the day i sit down and draft the commander chair fic of my dreams....... maybe tomorrow......

and then i got accepted as a writer for the gw2 zine ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ the chair idea was actually my backup option in case my first idea didn't pan out, and thank god it didn't, bc this one worked so much better. (still working on my initial idea, just turning it into a full fic! it was wayyy too long to be a zine submission.)

this is the chair i used. i downloaded the assembly instructions and tried out a bunch of different free pdf editors until i found one i liked, which ended up being sedja. if anyone's interested in doing something like this, i recommend printing out the pdf and writing directly on it! it was a lot easier for me to just figure out everything on paper first and then digitalize it after :P here's a picture of my physical copy

1. yeah i could've just erased the ikea logo and left a blank space but then i realized i could turn it into an in-universe joke. and then i ran with it.

4. if your commander willingly goes to therapy i'm happy for them but TO ME? you'd have to drag the commander kicking and screaming. it's not that they don't know that something is wrong with them, they know, and they know YOU know. you're just never supposed to talk about it. they don't look at their own psych eval results bc that's none of their business.

5. i normally avoid specifying the commander's race when i write them bc i enjoy the challenge, but for the zine i was assigned to write about a norn commander! as a human main i was uhhhh very ill-equipped. but that just meant i had to study up on my norn lore (•̀ᴗ•́)و i spent hours on the wiki, then went around interviewing norn mains for their opinions, which was great fun :D it all helped me narrow the focus of my piece: joining the war on commander objectification on the side of commander objectification (ㅅ´ ˘ `)♡ and no one self-aggrandizes quite like the norn commander!

and to balance that i knew my narrator had to be patronizing as shitttt. they've clearly been following the commander since the beginning and seem to know a lot of intimate details about their life, despite not thinking very highly of them. wonder who that could be :3c

6. i can't stop making references. so the original part number is actually #122620 in the manual but i've changed it here (and on the previous page!) to #082812, as in 08/28/12, the date gw2 was released! no real reason for it, @dalennaugw suggested it for funsies and i liked it. if you're my pal and i show you a wip and you have a cool idea for it, chances are i Will put that shit in. hi dale if you're reading this

7. another thing about me. i loveeee repetition. here the word "over" is repeated four times to match the picture. honestly a lot of the creative process for this piece was just staring at the pages and figuring out how to tie the pictures to the commander in ways that weren't extremely corny or trite. idk why i enjoy writing like this when i could be frolicking in the beautiful prosaic meadows of a word doc instead but. it's like i see a tiny little restrictive box and i'm like OH BOY can't wait to think inside of that thing!!! i like when the format matters just as much as the content and in some cases informs the content. am i making any sense here. well all you need to know is that i'm a virgo and my favorite book is house of leaves

7. aw fuck just realized i wrote 7 twice. whatever i'm not changing it this is 7 part two now. the theme of my piece is glory, what it means to the norn commander, and how far they're willing to go for it.

8. does norn culture place emphasis on seeking individual glory Yes are norn also very community-oriented Also Yes. i think it's common to see norn kids napping together in a big pile, usually after they've worn themselves out playing games outside. it makes sense practically (apes together warm) and socially (pack bonding good) but that's just my hc. growing up i used to share a bed with my cousins all the time so it's normal to me.

a young, naive not-yet-commander, with no real combat experience, has no point of reference to compare a "blaze of glory" to. but the way everyone talks about it, it must be a good thing. a wonderful thing. a reward fit for a life well-fought and a legend hard-earned. so they imagine it must feel like falling asleep surrounded by the people they love, who love them in turn.

11. out of all the pages, this one has the most emphasis on text placement, like comparing the enlarged picture of the screw to a sword, the numbers counting the screws, and "up up up" being arranged to mimic a wisp of smoke.

i also wanted to lean into the viking/norse mythology influences with my word choice.

12. more nods to norn culture. i didn't know they referred to the six human gods as "spirits of action" until i was doing the research for this piece :O

and the domain of the lost is called a hall of ghosts....... cause valhalla.....

"how to build a chair" was only supposed to be a placeholder title til i figured out a better one, but the innocuousness of it grew on me. also i came up with the other one too late and had already advertised under the chair title lol

20. my first instinct was to end it with something more reassuring, like "what you have built so far is enough" but that would've been an ooc switch-up for a narrator who has been nothing but snide and detached this whole time. gotta stick to my guns

obligatory chair joke as the last line. for realsies though it’s meant to be an earnest appeal to the commander to take a break, to have a seat, but it’s also a challenge. are they willing to lean on their friends? are the bonds they’ve forged strong enough to hold their weight? are they willing to put their faith in someone else’s hands? are they brave enough to try? well. only one way to find out.

As someone who's college age: yeah, there's a TON of people my age who don't know how things work and don't try to learn. Can't unzip a zip file, want to know where to download anime but haven't tried looking it up, ask things on subreddits a Google search or quick search on the wiki would answer, ask questions answered in FAQs or by professors or in the syllabus, say they can't download and install a new browser or app or program because they don't know how and they never think to look up how to do so, go months without logging into their student email because no one explained to them how to do so and they never thought to ask anyone how to do it, go months without washing their laundry because they don't know how and they also don't know how to look up instructions on how to do it, don't know how to cook and can't Google a recipe so they throw things in a pan and pray it works out, don't understand how to back up files, don't know how to attach a pdf to an email to send to a professor, cannot manage to put stuff on a USB drive + go to the library + print it off of the library computer, etc.

I spent most of freshman year teaching people things. The year after, my patience got more frayed and "Google it" started coming out of my mouth a lot more. This last year I gave up and now if people fuck themselves over, that's their decision. I'm not going to stand there begging people to do basic things they should already know how to do.

It was really funny when someone from Career Services came to talk to us about resumes and said we didn't need to put down 'can use Microsoft Excel' on there because everyone knew that and all but three people said actually no, they didn't. People who are 40+ really think we're all good at tech by default, like we fall out of the womb clutching a little phone already making spreadsheets in Excel or coding computers or whatever.

Meanwhile in reality you see a ton of people posting on tumblr going, "How do I post fic on tumblr?" whose blogs proudly state that they're under 18. The thought that you could just type into a Word doc and then copy and paste onto here never hits. And it's not going to.

I hate to break it to millennials and older people but yeah, actually, my generation does in fact have morons. We're not a moron-free demographic. I'm pretty sure moron-free demographics don't exist, tbh.

It infuriates me that my father (in his 80s) is always saying to me that he needs to find a 12-year-old to explain his tech to him. I (40s) keep telling him it's more like a bell curve or something. We had a blip of people being taught in school or having their asses kicked about technology. But then it went away again.

I think we made computers and then phones much more accessible, which is great, but we forgot we still need to teach people things. I know not everyone got explicit instruction in school even in my era, but it seems like the US, at least, phased some of that out as we started assuming The Youth automatically knew it all.

That said... in my day, college freshmen were also terrible about doing their laundry, so some things never change.

once upon a time, over 10 years ago, just a few months after the announcement that Motorcity was officially canceled...the creators of the show took pity on their heartbroken fandom and gave us several glimpses of what season 2 might have been like. they saw how much we loved Motorcity and gave us every scrap of info they could at the time, so that we could use those scraps to imagine our own personal "Season 2" - whether it continue on in our fics, our fanart, or simply our own heads.

Capri Chilton - Mike Chilton's long lost big sister! I can't remember where or when it was first revealed that they were considering giving Mike a secret older sister, and I haven't been able to track down the origin. that being said, when it was revealed, the fandom loved the idea so much that they begged the creators to make it canon. Chris P busted out the "magical canon stick", gave us this delightful concept sketch, and "Capri Chilton" was born!

Wiping Away Your Tears update.

So today is the day where I am allowed to edit my fic which I did and removed all the violations I did about my dad deporting thing and all of the links. I could only edit the story, footnotes, and stuff, so I can't answer comments or edit them so if I mentioned anything about gofundme or ko-fi accounts in the comments when I wasn't supposed to, I don't know what else I can do about that cause AO3 won't let me edit it.

If all I did is still not enough, then they will delete Wiping Away Your Tears but send me a downloaded version of it in pdf form, not that that it will matter because I already copied and pasted all chapters to a word document. But the comments will be lost, unfortunately 😔

Anyway, another update on my dad's situation. Unless the German government makes a move, we are planning on getting him out of there by the end of summer. I am doing writing commissions for people who don't just want to donate which if you are interested, you can send me a message on here. Or I will draw stuff too if you like my art. I'll basically make anything within reason.

My mum loves reading a non-fiction and history kinda stuff and a few months ago she asked me what am I reading (because i'm always reading on my phone and she hates that. She likes reading from an actual book) so I downloaded and print the pdf version of ILGOSS and gave it her and told her to read it. I didn't expect her to read and hence finish it. She ask me who is the author of the book and why are the characters are from Marvel (btw, she doesn't know much about marvel) and I just told her to keep reading and she did. I saw my mum cried while reading the book and she told me that she loved and hated it so I ask her why and she told me that the way you write the story and how you express and describe the part where Wanda and Vision are having an affair and how you construct and navigate the aftermath of the affair from the beginning to end is spot on and it shows how creative and talented you are. She thought you're like one of the OG writers from the internet and wanted to read more of your books that you're selling. She's even happier when she finds out that you're from Philippines (my dad is from Philippines)

My mum just finished reading your Bulletproof story and she even thank me that I introduce you to her. Who would've thought that this woman who always read non-fiction, History and True Crime is now reading your stories. You don't know how thankful I am for this, you gave us something to bond with.

It being a sapphic fic, I couldn't share it with my mom who still hasn't accepted that her daughter is gay (ive made peace with it). It must be so nice to be able to share your interest and true self with your family.

Gosh, your mom said all those things about the story? That's like .. wow. It's an honor. Hey, since it looks like ao3 is still down-ish and I keep seeing posts from people complaining about light mode, I'm gonna take this opportunity to recommend you download your fic and use the app moon reader. It lets you read epubs and pdf and it's the most outrageously customizable reader ever.

You can change the font up and down to any size, and you can change the color of the back ground and the color of the text. Back when my phone was brighter, or maybe I just had better vision, I would make the background black and text gray in order to get a darker dark mode. But you can make it purple or whatever.

And you can save your files in your Google drives or drop box and set it to sync up between your tablet and your phone, and if you do it right it will save your bookmarks.

There's a paid version and a free version, but for the life of me I can't remember anything that wasn't included in the free version. Maybe it just had ads? I feel like I used the free version for a long time and then finally upgraded because there was some minor feature I wanted and I was happy to give them my money.

Thank you for the ask, Cabbage! I started rambling so I'm sticking this under a lil cut!

☃️Does the “tadpole” storyline interest you? How does it affect your writing?

It absolutely does! Since my current fic takes place after the events of BG3, I don't really know that I have explored the tadpole implications very much--I've made reference to it, and I've gotten to dig into some of the pieces through flashbacks, but I haven't gone all out. As far as how it affects my writing, I do want to consider just the emotional/mental implications that carrying a tadpole around must have on the characters.

I think the storyline implication that interests me the most must be the amount of distance the party feels like they need to place between themselves and others. I don't know if I'm verbalizing it well, but for me, when I think about how cautious they must be about who finds out about the tadpoles, it makes me wonder how alone/alienated they must feel from others. Certainly, they have each other, but do they ever feel like they need to hold people outside of the party at arm's length? What would happen if the wrong person found out? Would the party be locked up so that their eventual transformation wouldn't hurt others? Would they be immediately written off as undercover True Souls/Absolute Cultists and handled thusly? Would they be banished? Worse?

The other part is the nervous undercurrent that the game introduces at the beginning? When is the transformation going to happen? Do we have time to dither? As a player, I didn't know if I had to meet a game condition every X amount of long rests or I would become a mind flayer until the Dream Guardian came in. So I was pretty nervous about making sure I thoroughly explored everything in Act 1 while also trying to figure out if there was a hidden timetable. Not to mention everyone really wants my cool artifact!

So when I write about the party during in-game events, I want to focus on how anxious they are. How irritable do they get with each other? How scared are they? Do they have time to sleep? Is that skin bruising or is it purpling because of transformation?

💧Is there a ship you wouldn’t write yourself, but love reading?

This is a tough question! I prefer to write mostly Tav x Character ships, so that's normally what I lean into, and a lot of my writing reflects that.

That being said, I do really enjoy reading pairings between origin characters--Shadowheart x Lae'zel and Wyll x Karlach are two of my big ones (there are *many* others). For now though, I don't have any ideas for those ships. I am seriously enjoying reading what others have written for them though!

This is a 'rules for me but not for thee' situation, where I will worry over how lore-accurate my story is, but when it comes to someone else's fic, I'm there to read and have a good time.

This is a mess of a situation in my brain--I really enjoy using lore to help build out ideas that I have, but I also don't ever want to run into a situation where I feel like I can't write an idea because the lore wouldn't support it (that doesn't stop me from worrying over it!). I will research lore to death to make sure an idea is viable (and likely not ask the right questions and miss a key detail); I am very lucky to have a lot of DMs in my life who are ready to help me research/remind me that the Rule of Cool does exist.

My DM also pointed out to me that the current D&D wikis and player books are nice, but they don't have the same breadth of information that older editions contained, and to purchase those books can get very pricey. There are .pdf's online, true, but I get nervous about what I am downloading--so even if I want to be as true to the lore as possible, I might not even have access to the whole picture.

So this is my way of saying that I try to afford myself a little grace, because I might not even have ready access to wider D&D lore.

Confession: I don't really get the big deal about the lorefm drama as far as it saving fics elsewhere and not giving authors engagement. I just can't wrap my head around that being any different than if the app said to download the epub or PDF of the fic which would barely require you to interact with the author, too.

And as far as it being stored somewhere else... isn't that the same thing with an epub download? I've seen epub Google Docs of fics for a fandom I'm in to prevent against author deletion (which includes some deleted fics) and that interaction obviously doesn't go to the author either. Not to mention that someone can do this with a locked fic and share it outside the archive, too.

Like yeah the people behind it came off weird, and it's not that I'm a fan of making people download yet another app that seems entirely unnecessary, but that whole line of argument seemed really hollow to me.

(Also anyone who emailed them to opt out was just giving away their email for no reason based on the whole frenzy around it, which is also why adding superficial reasons why this app is supposed to be uniquely evil bothered me. No way this glorified text to speech AI bot would be able to recognize that a fic was written by user A and therefore not read it.)

I've been thinking about this fic and I can't seem to find it.

All I remember was Kurt was an Angel and had wings. Then I remembered this specific scene where Blaine took Kurt to an abandoned building and let him fly in the building. That is all remembered from this specific fic.

Hey honey, I was trying to access the gallaplacidia fics that are hosted on your epub library but thought I could download them, none of them would open - is this just a me thing?

so those are epub files, which need an epub reader. if you're an iOS/mac person, Apple Books will work. the kindle app will also work. if you want to avoid amazon products and/or don't use apple products, there are tons of free epub readers available if you google it. i chose epub because it's a widely accessible format and handy for people who use ereaders for fic (like me).

Calibre is a really great free and open source ebook management software that i highly recommend for anyone who wants to download and manage the organization of fic. there are plugins that make it really easy to bulk download things to build your own archive. which i bring up because it has a function that lets you convert files quickly, like epub to pdf or epub to html, etc etc.

i also took this opportunity to update the archive with pdf files for anyone who doesn't want to go to the effort of all that. and i also added The Bolthole, which i can't remember if i left it out just because it's still accessible on AO3 or if it was just some weird oversight. but either way, the archive is updated with all that now.
