this is so cornplate but it’s keeping me up at night. how could haymitch have known what a seashell was during a game when he was a small child?
Then I remember a Games from when I was little, and a hysterical boy dressed in a suit made of seashells, who’d just been crowned in front of the entire nation of Panem.
Like how do you know what that is? you said you have “little schooling”, there’s next to no books in 12, that you “learn your letters in school”. Even volcanoes barely get a mention, and that’s framed next to the fact it’s because they have mountains.
In District 12, we learn about mountains but predominantly the ones that cover the seams of coal that will provide our livelihood. Volcanoes barely get a mention.
Their curriculum is built around their district. Beetee says schooling in d3 is mostly all about electronics. There would be no reason to teach them what a seashell was. They’ve been isolated for at least 50 years. They can’t just leave d12 to vacation at the ocean. Katniss and Peeta had only seen the ocean once on their victory tour.

Note
I calculate my like/love of Pokemon as:
Like - that's a good shiny but I'm not willing to spend possible hours trying to get it
Love - I'm willing to spend possible hours/days to obtain you
I really like this reasoning, there's certain shinies I like but the thought of hunting them is daunting

Very interesting advancement note that I’m obviously not the first to comment on but

The wording is ‘rescue’ a Ghast from the Nether, and bring it ‘safely home’. Which has always been the idea of, are Ghasts from the Nether? Was the Nether always like this; and are they so miserable because they were forced to adapt to a ruined fiery hellscape? Well, now we know that presumably when young especially, they’re liable to dry out. That if they’re rescued from being dried, they thrive in a more earthly environment. That they grow up happy when doing so. I do think that Ghasts may be from the Nether, but not from the current Nether. A much colder one, maybe more like the Overworld, maybe not. Probably a cavernous fungal paradise if I had to guess. But now they live in a world that’s been ruined by something, and turned into the human embodiment of hell, forced to spit fire just to no longer be filled with it when they’d much rather eat snow to cool down. Is it any wonder they cry?

Fossil predator is the oldest known animal with “saber teeth”
“Vaguely dog-like” animal was one of the oldest-known close cousins of modern mammals
The first true mammals evolved roughly 200 million years ago, during the early days of the dinosaurs. But mammals are the last surviving members of an older group, called the therapsids. At first glance, many therapsids weren’t obviously mammal-like , but they also had subtle features that we recognize in mammals today, like a hole on the sides of their skull for the jaw muscle to attach and structures on their jaw bones that would eventually evolve into mammals' distinctive middle ear bones. In a new paper in the journal Nature Communications, scientists announce the discovery of a fossil therapsid that’s the oldest of its kind, and maybe the oldest therapsid ever discovered: a vaguely dog-like saber-toothed predator.  The new fossil, which doesn’t have a species name yet, is a member of a group called the gorgonopsians. “Gorgonopsians are more closely related to mammals than they are to any other living animals,” says Ken Angielczyk, the Field Museum’s MacArthur Curator of Paleomammalogy in the Negaunee Integrative Research Center and a co-author of the paper. “They don’t have any modern descendents, and while they're not our direct ancestors, they're related to species that were our direct ancestors.”...

Including timelapse vid here because I found it easier exporting it from Procreate than CSP. (The idea of manually turning on record doesn’t exist in my brain apparently)
