Pairing: Bucky Barnes x OC/Reader Summary: When Bucky learns that his neighbor has been stealing his wifi for months. Warnings: None A/N: I'm not a fanfic writer at all, this, like all my stories, are adaptations to fanfics. My original stories are not written in english, so this is also a translation. please do not repost my work

For an instant, Bucky thought that the knocking he was hearing was coming directly from his head, I mean, it wouldn't be the first time his mind played tricks on him, but he realized that the sound was actually coming, unluckily for him, from his apartment door. Oh no no no no no no no, I just got back from putting up with Sam for almost 6 full weeks, I don't need interaction with more people for now.

Bucky thought for a minute to ignore the sound, to wait for the person to give up and leave, anyway he didn't spend many days on this apartment, almost no one had seen him leave or enter the building and he had no contact with the neighbors, only with the lady on the 7th floor who once lost one of her cats, which ended up in Bucky's apartment, accidentally. Not that I found the cat in the alley and actually brought him to my apartment, it doesn't mean that I stole the cat, he was in the street by himself, I rescued him.

When the banging on the door stopped and Bucky thought he could breathe calmly again, a voice between altered and annoyed was heard all the way to the living room where he was sitting trying to overcome his third panic attack and fourth existential crisis of the day .

-"I know you're in there! I saw you coming in a few hours ago! I've been waiting for days for you to come back!"-

More out of instinct than anything else, Bucky pulled out the knife hidden in his right boot as he slowly backed away from the door. Do I really have a spy as a neighbor? Should I call Sam? Is he in danger too? Never mind now, you need an escape route Bucky, concentrate, third floor, window to the alley, 2 minutes max, the bike is parked far away, I'll have to run, but to where, rendezvous point, safe place, think....

- "for God's sake, open the door, I need you to pay for your fucking internet plan, I'm in the last season of my series and I need to know if Carolina died or not!"-

- "The internet?"- Between the andrenaline from escaping and the shock of not understanding what was happening Bucky spoke louder than an assassin, with over 60 years of experience, should have spoken. Oh, shoot.

-"Yes! Your wifi, I need it to finish watching my series"-

Whispering "wifi" to himself, Bucky tries to remember where he has heard that word before, this is what I get for never listening to Sam when he talks to me. But before he can continue his mental analysis of all the conversations with Sam about such stupid things as his favorite American Football team, the New Orleans Saints, that I remember, to how Antonio could possibly leave María on the last episode of the 6 o'clock telenovela of which Sam is a fan, his apparent "neighbor" spoke up again:

-"Jesus Christ, can you open the door? So we can resolve this like adults"-

Bucky resigned to the fact that he has given his position to the "enemy", walks to the door and opens it waiting for his death. Well at least if I die I won't have to listen to Sam again talking about Antonio and María. But on the other side of the door, there was a woman, who in her pajamas, very unthreatening but cute, was watching him as if he were a ghost but still with defiance in her eyes, in one breath she introduced herself and continued her speech about her complaint to Bucky:

-"As I was saying, I need you to pay for your internet"-

-"I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand what you mean"- mumbled Bucky.

- "Good Lord"- To Bucky's surprise his neighbor, pushes him and enters his home, well not so much a home home, more like the headquarters of his secret club, of which he is the president, vice president and only member, the point is that it is his place, where he can (and wants to be alone), as she lives here. This must be a dream, maybe I hit my head too hard in the last mission and I am unconscious in the hospital.

Crossing the room, Bucky's unwanted visitor looks around searching for something while whispering the words "I see you are quite minimalist, but maybe this is too much, someone urgently needs to look for some inspiration on Pinterest". She stops abruptly in front of the shelf where, in theory, a TV should go, while shouting: "EUREKA", she bends down and picks up a white device which has two antennas and like a million little blinking lights, damn, that looks like something out of a spaceship, I'm being watched by aliens? I'm being spied on by Kree?

-"This is your router, this is where the internet signal comes from, which I need you to pay for so I can finish watching my series"-.

Bucky, still in shock for the third time in less than 15 minutes, as he processes the idea that perhaps Thanos' unknowing twin is spying on him for a second invasion of earth and revenge for his brother's death. He can only nod to his now more relaxed and happy neighbor.

-"Perfect, thanks! I need to check the food I left in the oven, I'll talk to you later"- and as quickly as she came she left through the same door, leaving Bucky with more doubts than answers, peeking down the hallway, he realizes that she is the neighbor who lives next door, to his right. When Bucky comes out of his initial stupor, still not fully understanding what is going on, he decides to take his cell phone out of his pocket and call his own personal Google to solve his doubts about this century: Sam Wilson.

-"Hey Buck! What's up?"-how does he always manage to sound so happy? focus Buck.

-"What the hell is a router and why do I have one in my house?"- somehow Bucky manages to formulate, although maybe his voice cracked a little on the last words.

-"That thing's been there for at least two months and you didn't even notice it? Have you even paid the bill?"-

-"You put this in here? Without telling me????"- maybe Sam is also a Kree? Who can I trust now? It's all a trap?

Listening to Bucky's accelerated breathing, Sam tries to explain to him slowly, that in this century life without internet is not life, but obviously as Bucky does not even know how to set the alarm on his own cell phone, he was in charge of buying the router and creating the contract with the company so that, the 106 year old man could have his personal network at home. He had given it the name but he had not given it a password so that Bucky himself could set it up later. "I am an excellent friend, I mean co-worker, if I may say so"

-"Sorry man, after all that happened, we got called for a mission and I forgot to tell you, do you have your laptop over there? I'll help you set up a password, so your neighbors won't steal your internet anymore"- and with that comment everything started to make sense in Bucky's slightly screwed up but functional mind about the events with his seemingly non-spy and harmless neighbor.

Meanwhile Bucky was trying to remember his own password to unlock the laptop in front of him, also courtesy of Sam. "Bucky, when you learn about online banking and that you can pay your rent, electricity, phone and everything with a click of your computer, you will thank me". It should be noted that Bucky hasn't used that laptop once, like a good 100 year old grandpa he goes to the bank to make his deposits and pay his debts, which obviously consisted only of electricity, water, gas and phone because the man had no idea that there was a device in his house that spit out internet, apparently only his next door neighbor knew this. Buck tells Sam how he thought his router was an alien device and how he thought his neighbor was a KGB agent coming to kill him. "Relax Buck we all have undesirable neighbors that steal our internet signal sometimes", well undesirable is not the word I would use to describe her but ok.

When Sam finally explains to him how to connect his computer to the internet, Bucky can finally see the name that his wonderful co-worker, not friend, because he could never be friends with someone so stupid as to think that the name "THE WIFILCON AND THE WINTER ROUTER" was a good name.

- "my god Sam, you're such an asshole!"-

-"HEY! That's a great name!"- Sam responds with as much indignation as possible, he's the best at naming everything from dogs to wifis.

- "I can't believe you're Captain America, I can't believe we're even friends"- Bucky really can't understand his luck to have friends, well, co-workers whatever.

- "Well excuse me but we're co-workers..."-

- "Well, take this call as my formal resignation, bye"-

-"Wait a minute Buck..."- Bucky ended the call, to finish -his self-imposed- punishment of listening to Sam Wilson talk for over an hour. At least I asked him how to use the bank's website to pay for the internet. Suddenly, without warning and without explanation, the memory of his neighbor is lodged in his head, her hair in a ponytail, her reading glasses, pink shorts, her sweater from some university of which he can't even remember the name because he was watching out for other things... that she wouldn't kill me obviously, he was watching out that she wouldn't pull a knife out of her back and kill me right there. The message on his laptop indicating that he can now set a new name and password to his wifi distracts him enough to stop thinking about his sweet and cute non-spy neighbor and how she would look with her hair down and her glasses off.

Still with the sweet feeling in his chest and the desire to see her again he writes as the new name of the wifi, while laughing:

"If you want free internet, you owe me at least one free dinner"

After paying the internet debt and closing the laptop, Bucky gets up hoping to find something edible in the kitchen, while leaning over to look inside his fridge and analyzing how bad it would be to eat a fried egg with pasta and sriracha, he hears again a knock on the door, but this time it does not cause Bucky the anguish and anxiety that caused him the first time, but quite the opposite.

-"Open the door Winter Router! I prepared chicken pot pie for dinner"-.

you do your part in messing with jungkook as you stifle a yawn, pretending to arrange things around the room before settling near him at the edge of the bed

he almost gives himself whiplash to look at you because you can NOT be serious

it’s endearing for you that he knows thay but you just continue to deadpan for the time-being

jungkook scoffs and crosses his arms across his chest because nO your eyes are dry!!!! look at them!!!! not a single tear!!!!

he’s looking at you so pointedly that it makes you chuckle, finally sitting down on his lap properly like he wanted you to that it makes him grunt

jungkook hasn’t had any decent action for a week now and even the slightest contact of you sitting on him, still-clothed, already makes him cRUMBLE

the thought that you’re in your volleyball shorts doesn’t help at all

it’s nice seeing him so flustered and willed right now,, his pupils already blOwn out and you haven’t even done anything

it’s instant relief when you’re back to kissing jungkook again and he might just bURST at this point and you’ve only been kissing him

tasting your lips is his first priority and breathing’s his second that it makes you chuckle with how needy he is, having to push him off because you know he’s getting light-headed

It's been a few days since your date night with Jay. It went much better than you expected. You knew from the start that Jay is a good guy and probably a sweet lover too. But after that night, you found out that there's more to him than his good look and easy-going attitude. Jay's gentleness soothes your insecurities. His understanding warms you from inside. It's hard to feel miserable when he's around. You cannot help but latch on to him.

You and Jay keep texting and calling each other every day, but you only got to meet him once since then. For a coffee date before he ran to work while you went for your PT session. His job doesn't leave a lot of spare time, so you relish all the time he spends with you.

You hear your phone rings when you have your lunch. There is a video call request from your best friend and work-mate, Alex. "Hey, you! I miss your stupid face!" you greet him.

"You know what's not stupid?" Alex ignores your greeting. "The new material I received this morning

He refers to an email you sent him last night. Instead of sleeping, you wrote some lines and tinkered some notes on your electric keyboard. It was still very rough, but you and Alex swap ideas all the time. They could be a bar of melodies or chord progressions. Or maybe a single line that you cannot get out of your head, even there's no context to it.

"Wanna work on it soon?" Alex proposes.

"Yeah, sure!" you easily agree.

"You know I'm gonna ask how you come up with that song idea, right?" Alex probes further. He got an idea about your sudden burst of inspiration, but you haven't told him anything yet so far.

"You can ask. I might not answer", you nonchalantly retort. "Are you asking now?"

"I would, but I just arrived at my parents' house for our weekly dinner", Alex turns his camera phone and shows you his family dining table. "Say hi to Y/N, Pop" He lets his parents know that you're on the phone.

"Hallo, Liefje" Alex's parents greet and wave at you. "I miss you, Y/N. How are you doing, darling?" Alex's mom squeals at you.

"I miss you guys too. I miss home," you utter mournfully.

"I saw your dad last week. He and your mom cannot wait to have you back home next month. As are we." Alex's dad informs you.

Your face gets even more upset. "I haven't told my parents yet, but it's gonna be another two months. It's not working out as good as they wanted"

Alex's parents let out a sympathetic noise. "Oh great, I still have two more months to hide all my chocolate from you" Alex teases you instead. He knows if he doesn't throw any humor here, you're going to weep. The family laughs at your offended look.

"Where's Sara?" you ask them when you didn't notice Alex's little sister on the table.

"She's getting ready for a date after dinner. Said they will go stargazing. Can you believe it?" Alex skeptically recounts to you.

"Hmm, that sounds romantic. Good for her." you hum your appreciation. Alex can see twinkles in your eyes.

"Of course, you thought it was charming", Alex sounds vexed.

"Why are you so grumpy about this? You have a hit song that compared someone's eyes with the moon", you remind him. "Last time I checked, that song already got more than 400 million streams on Spotify". Alex just grumbles incoherently, while you can hear his father's booming laugh in the background.

"Alex, would you please call your sister down for dinner?" Alex's mom orders him.

"Alright, ma. Gotta go, Y/N. I'll call you later when I'm back at the studio. Bye, sis!" Alex ends the call.

Kelly Severide comes to your place in the evening after he finished his shift. He called you on your cell several times, but you didn't pick them up. He knocked on your door for a few minutes without answers. Worried that something bad happened to you, he uses his key to open your apartment door. You gave him a spare when you began your recovery from the incident. Since you got nobody in town except for the 51 Family, you thought at least one of them should have access to your place, in case you need help.

Kelly sees you sitting on your corner desk with headphones on. Your head is nodding to the beat you're working on. Relieved to know you okay, but feels a bit annoyed, Kelly taps your shoulder lightly. You jump in surprise, almost fall from your chair if Kelly doesn't hold you down.

"Kelly! What..! Why are you..??" your heart is still pounding in shock, makes you unable to finish your thoughts properly.

"I knocked! And called you many times! Neither you answered! I was afraid that you fell and unconscious so I used my key", Kelly exclaims.

You check your phone and see seven missed calls from Kelly. "Sorry, I left my phone on mute, somehow"

Kelly goes to raid your fridge and takes a bottle of apple juice. "Your fridge needs beers" he judges. "Go, get ready! We'll hang out at Molly's. Everyone misses you", Kelly orders you.

"I'm working, Kelly. Just because my work has no shifts, doesn't mean I can go anytime you want", protest you.

"You work for your best friend, who's in another continent right now. You can slack off for a bit" he dismisses your complaint.

"I'm making big progress here. My writing juice is flowing", you point at your laptop.

"One hour. I give you one hour to work. Then I'm hauling you out of here. In the meantime, I'm gonna order take out for us", Kelly decides.

You only mumble your disagreement, knowing that you're gonna lost the argument anyway. So you just put your headphones back on your head. However, Kelly pokes you again five minutes later, with his phone on hand, "Hey, do you want Thai or Greek? I'm in the mood for Greek right now", Kelly playfully asks you.

"Yeah, Greek is fine" you start to feel bothered.

He leaves to order the food while you're back to do your work. Ten minutes passed, Kelly drags a chair from the kitchen island to your side. He knocks on the table to catch your attention.

"Hey, I just remember, Brett said they saw you rescued somebody at the swimming pool last week. How did that happen?" he questions.

You let out a desperate sigh. "You're not going to let me work in peace, are you?"

Kelly just grins. "C'mon, we haven't hung out for a while. Lots of drama to share"

You save your work in defeat and then move to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water. Kelly sits on the couch with legs resting on the coffee table. You place yourself next to Kelly.

"They extend my therapy for another month" you restlessly play with your bottle cap.

"Is it not going well?" Kelly asks in concern.

"I got cramps that day at the swimming pool. They worried I damaged something. So they prefer to be cautious" you fill him in.

"That's when you rescued Dr. Manning's son " Kelly tries to clarify.

"Well, I just pulled him out of the water. The pool guard was the one who helped him breathe" you shrug.

"You assisted. It still counts as a rescue", Kelly insists. "Bet if Dr. Manning knew, she would buy you drinks at Molly's forever"

"More like got invited to dinner at their place," you mutter.

"Hmm, that's probably true" Kelly pauses for a moment, thinking. "Wait, did you meet her?" he grills you.

"Yeah. And her fiancé. I came to the hospital to check on Owen. Then next thing I knew I'm having family dinner with Manning/Halstead clan", you convey to him.

Kelly's phone chirps interruptedly. "Food's here" He goes to pick up the food from the delivery guy. "Alright, let's eat then we can go to Molly's"

Jay is nursing his first beer as he watches Will bottoms up his third glass of whiskey. Will called him earlier in the evening, claimed that he needs bro night out after a shitty day at Med. Jay's initial plan to have dinner with you got scrapped before he even asked.

"Maybe you need to pace yourself, Will", Jay suggests to him as Will signs to Otis for a refill.

"Yeah, Doc. Maybe you want to switch? We have a nice Dutch craft beer chilling here", Otis offers. But Will is still holding out his empty glass to him, silently demanding for more. "Okay then" sighs Otis as he fills the glass.

Jay hears the commotions at the other end of the bar. He recognizes some people from Firehouse 51 there. Christopher Hermann is cackling, while Matt Casey grins widely. They pay attention to someone that is sitting among the group, but he cannot see who because Severide is blocking his view.

Jay checks his phone while he finishes his beer. He received a text from you beforehand, told him that she's going out to meet her friends tonight. He texted back, wishing her to enjoy her night out, but got no replies. Will notices Jay's scrolling on his phone and asks, "Do you need to go back to work?"

"Nah, just checking my texts" Jay puts his phone back in his pocket. "Are you feeling better now?"

"Not in the slightest. But I still have to go to work tomorrow. If I wanna do better than today, I cannot do that with a hangover" Will sulks. "Hey Gabby, I would like to try that craft beer Otis suggested" he requests to Gabby who passes by.

"Would you like one as well, Jay?" Gabby offers him.

"Alright, why not.." Jay accepts the new bottle.

"Is this a new batch? Don't think I ever have it here before", comments Will after his first sip.

"Yeah! Just start to come in this month. It's a friend's favorite. She hooked us up with a supplier directly from The Netherlands. You like it?" Gabby enthusiastically claims.

"It's good. But still not Bourbon", Will pouts. Jay lets out a snort while Gabby snickers.

Jay looks around the bar as he savors his beer. He paused when he thought he saw you sitting among the 51 Gang. Will notices and looks in the same direction. "Is that Y/N?" asks Will.

Jay stands up for his seat, "I'm gonna go say hi to her"

You feel a palm pressed to your back as you hear someone's saying from behind, "Didn't expect to see you here tonight"

You turn your back immediately as you realize whose voice it is, "Jay!" shout you excitedly. You open your arms to hug him. Jay lands a chaste kiss on your lips before hugs you back.

Kelly and Matt look at each other over your head with eyebrows raised. "Well, that's something I didn't expect" goads Kelly.

"Severide, Casey" Jay gives them an acknowledging nod with his hands stay on your hips.

"How do you know each other?" Matt asks curiously.

Jay opens his mouth to reply, but you hear Will's interruption, "You guys finally made it, huh?" Jay rolls his eyes at his brother.

"These guys have been sending heart-eyes at each other since they first met" Will tips off the 51 gang. "Which I arranged, by the way. But this result was unintentional"

"No, we're not!" you try to deny.

"I was there, Y/N, at your almost first kiss" Will divulges.

"Oh my god!" you hide your blushing face behind your palms. Jay smacks a kiss on the side of your head, amused while the group makes fun of you.

"I guess this happened after Y/N rescued Owen?" Sylvie asks to confirm.

"Ooooh yes, our next year candidate!" Hermann yells. The others just clap and whistle in response. You thud your head to the bar table, abashed.

"Hey, don't be embarrassed. We are proud of you" Casey remarks. "That said if you want to go to the academy..." he continues.

"Nuh-uh, I love my job, thank you very much" you quickly state.

You spend the rest of the night beside Jay, chatting and laughing with 51 Family and Halstead brothers until you let out a big yawn. "Tired?" Jay asks you softly.

You nod, "Beer always made me sleepy"

"Let me settle the tabs, then I'll take you home" Jay squeezes your shoulder as he stands up.

Kelly observes you and Jay throughout the night. When Jay left your side, he lowly speaks to you after making sure everyone else is busy conversing elsewhere. "So Jay Halstead is the one who got your juice's flowing, huh?"

"Kelly!" you slap his arm, agape.

"I mean your writing juice! You said it earlier!" Kelly yelps, but his smirk contradicts his words.

"You're the worst" you just shake your head.

Kelly's face turns serious for a moment, "Does he know about your situation?"

"What situation?" you try to sound innocent, but Kelly just gives you a look.

"Told him about the collapsing stage" you deflated.

"Have you told him that you're leaving in two months?" Kelly pushes.

"It's still too early. Who knows, Jay might end this soon", your voice sounds unsure.

"Don't think so. He looks quite smitten by you. Should probably tell him soon", Kelly disagrees.

"I'm happy right now, Kels. Can I just enjoy this for a while?" you start to lose patience with him.

"He deserves to know" Kelly persists.

You look down at the table, your fist is clenched in frustration. Jay comes back and notices the tense atmosphere. "Is everything okay?"

You reply with a forced smile, "Yeah, let's get out of here" then stand up from your seat and give Kelly a quick hug, "Thanks, Kels"

You move to say goodbye to the rest of the group, which takes a bit of time since everyone wants a hug or has something to tell you.

"C'mon guys, my boyfriend has waited long enough" you cry out when Sylvie and Gabby hold you back from going. The group guffaw even louder and playfully nudges Jay, who just beams brightly at you.

"Good night, guys!" you casually shout, finally getting away from the rest of the group, with Jay's hand in yours.

I’ve done a few individual headcanons about cooking before, but I think it’s time for a refresher. You could call this... the main course.

Disclaimer: this shit is crack as fuck because I have very strong feelings about cooking lmfao. FOH don’t interact.

Tornado of Terror: She’d find a way to burn ice cream, honestly. She tries so hard (by god she tries) but her meals always come out as a convoluted mess with ingredients that have no reason being together. She eats her steaks well done and boils hamburgers. It’s a nightmare. She doesn’t really spend too much time in the kitchen, however, because she knows she sucks at cooking and because of this, makes 90% of her diet consist of takeout. But if she did spend more of her day cooking, she’d probably discover the recipe to meth accidentally. It’s that bad.

Silverfang: Stubborn old grandpa way of cooking. He’s got a handful of recipes that have been passed down for generations and he’s gonna carry those fuckers to his grave. When Garou was living at the dojo, the little bastard would try to make some changes to these recipes and Bang had to will every molecule in his arthritis-riddled body to not RKO this kid (not really, Bang wouldn’t hurt a fly). But I digress. He’s a decent cook, knows all the fundamentals and all of that shit.

Atomic Samurai: Can’t cook or bake for shit although he, of course, talks himself up like he can. The extent of his cooking knowledge is only within the realm of “shit you can roast over a campfire when your cheap ass can’t scrape together enough coin to pay the electricity bill”. But now that he’s got that S-Class paycheck and three other disciples to freeload off of, they pretty much cater to his every food-related need. He’s useless in the kitchen. Utterly fucking useless.

Child Emperor: Doesn’t know how to cook (little bastard ain’t even tall enough to reach the stove imo) but luckily he’s got that PHAT BRAIN so he can easily just build a Gordon Ramsey bot 3000 to replace his incompetence in the kitchen. His diet consists of Dino nuggets and microwaveable noodles so it’s not like he’s doing the world a great disservice by not learning how to cook properly.

Metal Knight: Same as Child Emperor except he’s a rich bastard and programs his bots to make that fancy shit with only the finest ingredients. He’s got enough cash from doing black market tech trades and building up his robo-army that this motherfucker could snort caviar for fun. He’s a real pompous asshole about it.

King: His mom taught him to cook a few things, nothing serious. He’s one of those dudes that doesn’t really know how to make much, but the few dishes that he does know how to cook are fucking BOMB. He’s got a cast iron skillet for making pancakes and everything, bitch is already halfway to being a chef himself. Other than that, however, he’s a ramen monster. His blood is practically pre-packaged bone broth.

Zombieman: I’ve said this in a previous hc but he’s a damn good cook. One problem though: he only knows how to make single servings of everything because he eats alone almost all the time. He specializes in meats. Bitch is a carnivore. He bought himself a set of those 500-dollar butcher knives so he can carve up cuts like a monster. He hemorrhages cash into fancy wood chips so he can get that smoky flavor juuuuust right. He’s got an Outdoor Chef setup on his patio. My mans is living the DREAM.

Drive Knight: He can eat but does he really need to? His cooking expertise is popping a new battery in. There you go.

Pig God: Oh my god if this man’s kitchen isn’t Michelin-Star quality. He eats a lot and he cooks a lot, it’s only natural. He’s got an indoor grill and pot chandelier and buys industrial-sized buckets of pickles and roast beef by the cow and— okay he just has a lot of food, alright? And he’s got that PHAT S-Class paycheck so my boy probably has a whole walk-in fridge just to put all the fucking food he eats. Bonus points if he hires a dishboy to work and a contractor to implement a three-sink dish station with “Clean-Rinse-Sanitize” stickers slapped on the steel, lol. But yeah, he cooks for 500 people at a time because he eats enough for 500 people at a time. Gotta maintain that figure, you know what I’m saying?

Superalloy Darkshine: He has. Oh my god— he has a full shelf dedicated to just. DOZENS OF JARS of whey protein. He has two blenders: one for fruit smoothies and one for protein shakes. His kitchen? Spotless. He knows how to cook and he eats like a bodybuilder (because he is one, duh) so he’s got that fridge STOCKED at all times. He cleans like he’s getting paid for it because nothing feels better than wiping down a gas stove until that bitch is spotless. However, his taste is garbage. He can throw down in the kitchen but does it taste good? No. Sometimes the ultra-healthy alternative to something isn’t always the greatest. He’s grown accustomed to putting zucchini in his cakes and almost damn well likes the texture of it, but don’t invite this guy to the potluck because he WILL show up with a vegetable nightmare that’s sure to make even vegans gag. Sorry bud, but nobody likes soy bacon.

Watchdog Man: furry ass.

Flashy Flash: I’ve said this before in a previous hc, but he’s pescatarian. He grew up on a coastal town before being sold of to the ninja village like a goddamned carpet and now fish is the only meat he eats. His cooking ability is about as good as one would expect from a homesless ninja. Like Atomic Samurai, he can throw it down over the campfire and still find a way to make a decent dish (in both presentation and taste) despite having limited knowledge and resources to work with. Bitch can whip up a five-star meal with some branches, a fish, and half a carrot like it was second nature. That’s about it though. He’s useless in an actual kitchen.

Genos: It’s canon. He’s a housewife. He only knows how to make the select few dishes that play an integral part in Saitama’s diet, though (because Genos can eat but he doesn’t really need to, so he only does it when he and Saitama are sharing a meal). Those dishes include things like: actual garbage. He cooks shit food. It’s not his fault. Saitama just eats like a fucking twat. There’s rats that live in the dumpster outside the restaurant I work in that have a better diet than him. Genos just works with what the poor bastard’s got and has gained a pretty mediocre grasp on cooking because of it. If he wanted to, though, he could easily be the best chef in all the land. Too bad he’s more focused on being an ultra-powerful speed demon.

Metal Bat: Tries his absolute best to cook healthy meals for him and Zenko when he almost always resorts to just popping a frozen pizza in the oven and calling it a day. I’ve said this before in a previous hc, but he eats his shit BURNT. Bitch like his steak well done, his yolks grey, and his chicken vaporized. The only exception to this is sushi because there really is no other way to enjoy it other than having it raw. Trust me, though. If there was a way to burn the fuck out of sashimi while still having it be sashimi, he’d find a way to do it and like it. But yeah, as I said: he sucks ass at cooking. He’s tried the tutorials, he’s bought the skillets, he’s sharpened the knives, but he just can’t fucking do it.

Tanktop Master: Same as Superalloy. They bond over gross-ass ultra-healthy recipes that only they enjoy. The Tanktop Gang loves him but they always kindly refuse to eat over at his house because they know he’s gonna try to make them ingest a broccoli loaf or some shit. He’s not too strict about his diet, though. He’ll chill out and have a pizza every once and a while, but only when he’s hanging out with the homies.

Puri-Puri Prisoner: He has a job in prison where he helps out in the kitchen for seventy-five cents an hour, but that’s about the extent of it. He’s got the bare basics down and could put together a decent meal for date night if he really tried (and had a damn kitchen to work with). On top of that, he can throw down some tasty prison food recipes, hand-crafted from the brick box itself. Ramen pad Thai, anyone?

Amai Mask: he’s rich as fuck, why does he need to cook? Bitch hired a chef and now all he does it drink skim milk and eat food from the top shelf. He couldn’t fry an egg if his life depended on it. Poor bastard doesn’t even know what a whisk is. And don’t even get me started on how much of a slob he is. The ten-minute process of making a single plate of spaghetti will have his kitchen in such a disgusting state that it’ll take him and a trusty Mister Clean Magic Eraser five hours just to clean it up. That is, if he even has the basic human decency to pick up after himself. He’ll probably just hire someone to do for him and then tip them a crisp 100-dollar bill for their troubles, only to make an even worse mess tomorrow.

Iaian: I’ve said this before in a previous hc, but yes: he can cook. It’s nothing special. He’s got a suburban dad sense of cooking where he, like King, can only make a select few dishes but makes those dishes taste magical. He’s got 0 utensils and shit kitchen to work with (because Kami’s place is probably like, centuries old on account of him still being a Samurai), but boy can Iaian whip up a feast like no other despite all that. It’s all protein-packed flavor bombs that look simple in comparison to, say, Zombieman or Metal Knight’s food, but it still tastes good all the same. Kama eats off of his plate all the time and it used to annoy him but they’ve grown so close that they might as well share forks at this point.

Okamaitachi: Can’t really cook, but they are a baking god. I don’t know much about baking but I know they’ve got a cupboard dedicated to their plethora of sourdough starters. They buy yeast by the pound and make enough bread to feed entire armies some days. Whatever the gang doesn’t eat, they donate it to the local homeless shelter and make it a habit to go out of their way performing good deeds that don’t always involve sword fighting (something Kami insists he instilled into them via his teachings— which is bullshit. Kama is just naturally good-hearted and sweet).

Bushidrill: Can’t cook or bake for shit but like Atomic Samurai and Flash, can throw it down on the campfire. Don’t let this man near any turkeys or pigs because he will spitroast the fuck out of them.

Fubuki: Okay, not only is she a great cook but she’s as dogmatic as a coked-out head chef. She and the Blizzard Group sometimes cook together in her massive kitchen (she poured all of her measly paycheck into it because by god, if her apartment doesn’t have a kitchen fit for a chef then it’s not worth living in), and she’ll be barking orders like a damn crow. She’s got the two-grand knife set, cast-iron everything, bronze accents on the sink, and the ability to deglaze a pan without starting a fire. She’s a natural. If she cooks for you, then that’s how you know she likes you. All in all, her food tastes and looks great. She’s a bit low on funds on account of being only Class-B, so she sometimes takes little shortcuts when plating her dishes, like using celery leaves in place of parsley and all that jazz.

Saitama: I’ve already said that his diet is absolute shit and part of that is due to being poor, but I will show mercy and say that he’s a decent cook. He only makes what he knows he’s gonna like and doesn’t leave any room for experimentation unless his budget allows it (which isn’t often). His kitchen only has the bare essentials. Genos has offered to buy him more equipment and even renovate the damn thing for him but Saitama refuses each time because then he’d have a bigass kitchen just for making a poor man’s omurice, and that would be a waste. His talent, though? Making a perfect omelet. He can fold the egg like a sheet with no tears and no brown spots. It tastes heavenly.

Mumen Rider: Ultra-safe in the kitchen. He doesn’t even own a knife sharpener because he’s clumsy enough to know he’ll cut himself the moment he even tries to use it. His pot handles all have coverings and he’s watched all of the food safety and fire safety videos out there. He could give a goddamned seminar on it. Food-wise, he’s a decent home cook. Nothing special. He does, however, share Superalloy and Tanktop’s nasty habit of over healthy-ing everything to oblivion and making it a tasteless, vegetative mess. It doesn’t matter if you invite him to the potluck or not because he’ll bring a cauliflower pizza anyway and y’all better fucking enjoy it or he’ll start crying.

Sonic: The same as Flashy Flash, minus the pescatarianism. He’d butcher a pig without blinking an eye, and often uses his katana in cooking (even though it poses like, 87 different safety hazards and is most definitely health violation). He can forage quite well and has taken a liking to wild mushrooms and berries over the years. It’s gotten so natural to him that he now knows by heart the specific time of year in which the wild berries are ripest, and which species of salmon inhabit certain streams on any given day.

Garou: Would burn water. End of story. His cooking is so bad and dangerous that everyone thinks he’s an arsonist when he really just starts fires on accident. Don’t let this fucker near a stove, for the love of god.

Class 1-A Girls as Roommates

Momo Yaoyorozu

First of all, you lucky bastard I hate you. Secondly, I’d like to make the point that Momo is wealthy af and has no financial need of a roommate. So, if you two are living, you’re probably already great friends with her or more. 

Momo loves to share. She is an extremely generous person, so she'll totally offer you some of her food when she cooks and even some of her shower products. 

Totally lets you borrow her clothes. Different sizes? She's gotchoo! Can and will create the best clothes for you. This is especially helpful if you have a date.

Speaking of her Quirk, its usefulness becomes really apparent when you two first move in and are still figuring out where things are or what you still need for the house. Bought that knife set but somehow forgot a can opener? Momo’s gotchoo again. 

A great communicator and takes the initiative to make sure you guys are on the same page about chores. Despite her busy hero career, Momo still does a great job keeping up with her fair share.

Please sit and drink tea with her. She'd love it. Probably the best thing about being Momo's roommate is coming home at the end of the day to this beautiful woman omg are you're okay with just being roommates and catching up over cups of freshly brewed tea. 

If something happens and you’re unable to pa your rent one month, Momo can cover it. Will not guilt or shame you over this. No matter what kind of petty roommate argument you two might have, she will never hold that over your head. Ever. Things happen, and Momo understands that.

The not so great...

Yaomomo is such a sweetie but...she's also a rich girl who is used to a lot space. Her furniture will fill up the whole apartment. An entire kitchen cabinet is stuffed to the brim with her teas, so you'd have to find some other space to shove your cereal.

Nonetheless, she tries very hard to be a good roommate - especially if it's her first place after moving out of her parents' house/school dorms - and this sometimes leads to her being overly accommodating. That and the above can lead to some tension between you two. 

Momo has such long, beautiful hair...and it absolutely gets clogged in y'all's shower. Good luck.

Mina Ashido

Mina is the fun roommate! I’m talking late nights spent goofing off, playing video games and watching movies or even just talking if you want. If you two weren’t best friends before moving in together, guess what?

You’re best friends now. or more?

Alien Queen is also Snack Queen. Our pink homegirl buys lots of snacks and is more than happy to share.

Um, garbage? What garbage? Her Quirk dissolves it and that’s one utility y’all are saving money on now to get Kaminari to help with the electricity

No matter how bad your day was, how shitty your boss, how long your commute, Mina can always make you laugh. Which is a nice way to end an otherwise completely shit day.

Actually pretty good about keeping the apartment tidy! Living in the UA dorm taught her a lot about being considerate of shared spaces and she’s always out and about anyway. So almost no worries about messes 

Because she’s either out and about or doing patrols, you actually get the apartment to yourself quite a bit?? Ummm, SCORE! Until you start missing your pink roomie/bestie

That is, if she’s not inviting/dragging you out to do stuff with her! If you’re someone who needs a bit of prompting to get out of the house, Mina is great for that!

Also...the roommate who is constantly trying to hook you up with her friends. Like, I’m serious. If you’re not already seeing anyone, this die hard romantic will constantly try to set you up with people hey, roomie, pls introduce me to Kirishima. You won’t need a dating app ‘cause Mina Ashido is your roommate and girl knows everybody.

The not so great...

If you're pretty introverted or just really prefer quiet at home, being roommates with Mina can be hard. Mina is a social butterfly - loud and bubbly and all these other wonderful qualities that simultaneously don't mesh well with most introverts.

Speaking of social butterfly, she invites her friends over. A lot. And y’all know that the Bakusquad spells c h a o s

It would also not surprise me if Mina had a number of...ahem, overnight guests. So prepare for extra (awkward) company at breakfast.

Sometimes gets so caught up in her social life, all those hobbies, and hero work that...she forgets that rent or utilities are due. Whoops. You’ll have to remind her sometimes. 😬

Good luck if you have wooden floorboards. Mina loves to dance and this means a lot of scuff marks.

Ochaco Uraraka

This cutie! 12/10 would room with her if I could

When she first started UA, Ochaco had to move to Musutafu and live on her on which I'm sure was a little scary for a 15-year-old girl and definitely lonely. She wasn't looking forward to being alone again after graduation but wait! She has you!

Really appreciates your presence in your shared home and will undoubtedly cherish you, even treating you like family. It makes her so happy when she comes home after a long day of patrols and having someone respond when she says, "I'm home!" Ochaco, lemme be your housewife

Video game nights with Dekusquad? Video game nights with Dekusquad! 

Pretty clean and always does her dishes which automatically puts her the top tier of roommate categories, let’s be real. 

She knows where all the deals are, when certain sales are happening, and where to go for the best discounts. And she shares all this hard-earned knowledge with her precious roomie (that's you, boo). Grocery shopping with her is intense because she gets super competitive about getting those deals before everyone else but it's also so much fun.

Master couponer. You knows those ladies that clip so many coupons that they sort them into little bags and actually sell them in bundles? That's Ochaco. She's even part of some online couponing groups. 

But she always hands you the coupons for your favorite snacks.

The not so great..

Ochaco works really, really hard and takes on a lot of missions. So, when she gets home, the usually upbeat hero can be a little...grouchy. By grouchy, I mean snappy and sulky and -- who is this woman and what did she do to your sweet, adorable roommate? 

Seriously, just don’t talk to her or make a lot of noise until she sleeps for 10+ hours and eats or she might send you floating to your shared ceiling.

That roommate who will get on you if you leave any of the lights on or stay in the shower for too long. She is NOT shelling out extra cash on utilities next month because of you!! honestly same

Toru Hagakure

Another fun roommate! 

We’ve seen her room, and we can tell by looking at it that she loves to decorate. If you (probably) have different tastes than hers, Toru will find ways to compromise and combine both your preferences to decorate your shared apartment! You know what that means?

Ikea trips. Toru’s enthusiasm alone makes it so much fun but it’s not as fun when you inevitably lose her in that Swedish labyrinth. (Hint: Check the various kids’ sections. She got distracted by the cute plushies.) 

If you two are not constantly updating your interior design, you’re at least adding to it. it makes the space just uniquely yours and feel so homey.

Toru has some real 👌👌 taste in movies. Her movie collection makes for some awesome movie nights. Bring all the blankets, plushies, and the like and you’re in for a chill night.

Out of everyone on this list, I feel like she’ll be the easiest to convince to get a pet. She skips the “well, who is gonna pay for food?” talk and doesn’t spend any too much time deliberating over her busy hero schedule - just jumps right on in to the nearest adoption agency.

Congrats, you’re now parents of an adorable, slightly grumpy rescue cat. Which - bonus - actually makes it so much easier keeping track of Toru because it’s almost always brushing against her legs or on her lap.

The not so great...

Definitely the nosy roommates. She wants to know all the details about your life and is the type to peak into your room because she's curious. Her Quirk only makes all the easier for her.

She likes to leave cute or funny messages on the fogged up bathroom mirror or with magnets on the fridge which is cute but...unnerving when an invisible being sends you random messages in your apartment.

....and according to the wiki, she loves hidden-camera prank shows? Welcome to Jackass, roomie. You’re gonna get pranked.

Also because of her Quirk, she often has to remove her clothes to make full use of her invisibility but this has also lead to a bad habit of leaving articles of clothing throughout the apartment. You often find random socks and gloves and even shirts out throughout the apartment.

Tsuyu Asui

A+ roomie. Seriously, give this girl all a gold star.

Super tidy, super considerate, and super stoked to live with you. She’s used to a full house and honestly wasn’t so sure about living on her own straight after graduation. Then came you!

Tsuyu looooves to cook with you. If your cooking skills need work, she’ll happily teach you. Out of everyone else on this list, you share the most meals together. 

Soooo many blankets and pillows in your apartment! Tsu needs the extra layers during winter and honestly, just build a blanket fort for you two. It’s great. just roommates huh?

Absolutely will text you just to check in if she makes it home before you and has no problem either waiting up for you or even walking to meet if it’s dark. And honestly, what’s better than 

Being super straightforward, Tsuyu always lets you know if there’s something up with the apartment or just if she’d like you to be a little quieter coming home. Also an observant person and checks in on your needs/preferences as well. Y’all rarely have any typical roommate spats because she’s direct and makes sure to communicate.

We stan a sweet, considerate frog roommate in this household.

The not so great...

Because she grew up taking care of two younger siblings and then lived with the entire 1-A class (19 teenagers in one building -- that's insane) in the dorms, Tsuyu actually has little tolerance for messes in common spaces. 

Tsuya Asui ain’t your momma. You're both adults and you both pay rent, so she expects you clean up after yourself and will call you out if you don't.

Especially about those dishes left in the sink. You can say that you just left the pots in there "to soak", but Tsuyu ain't buying it. And she tells you as much.

Not above shaming your messes on her Snap story i’m that petty roommate or bringing up that you forgot to take out the trash in front of other people.

Kyouka Jirou

She's the cool roommate. By that, I mean the one you’re lowkey bragging about when you describe her to your friends. Girl is a hero, plays pretty much every instrument, and is just a cool person in general. It’s hard not to brag.

Seriously, just her mere presence alone makes your place at least 70% cooler than it would have been if you lived by yourself. That’s how cool she is.

Super respectful of your privacy. Like, she won’t even know what your room actually looks like unless you actually invite her in.

Great roommate banter. Kyouka has a great dry sense of humor and likes to tease people, so you two can go back and forth all day.

Great texter. She always gives you a heads up when people are over or if you guys need anything for the apartment. Bonus: lots of hilarious pics of Bakusquad being idiots.

Don't tell her that you can hear her when she sings in the shower; it'd just fluster her and make her self-conscious. But being able to listen to that amazing voice in your own home?👌👌👌

If you're someone who doesn't necessarily need or even want a tight knit relationship with a roommate, Kyouka is your best bet. She's generally really chill and won't get hyped over being best friends. 

That said, she’s a pretty empathetic person and easy to talk to. She’ll absolutely stay up late with you just to talk if you need it. Gives great advice.

The not so great...

You will lose track over how many times you ask her to turn the music down. 

Like Mina, Kyouka comes as a package deal with the Bakusquad. Kyouka doesn’t invite them over often because even she doesn’t want that chaos in her home but sometimes it’s inevitable.

She’s not much of a cook. Plus she’s pretty busy keeping up with her hero career, music, and group of friends, so she doesn’t have much free time anyway. This means she orders out - a lot. Good news? Hardly any friction over cleaning dishes. Bad news? Her take out boxes leave little room in the fridge for your food.

BONUS: Regardless of who you room with, you’ll hardly ever worry about a break-in or any crime in your neighborhood because your roommate is a professional hero and will kick any home intruder stupid enough to try anything.

The Cat’s Meow - Jumin Han x Fem!Reader Pt 8

Sooooooooo....Bonus chapter? Yes? No? Maybe? I’ve got about 3 weeks worth of content scheduled so I’m debating a one-shot/bonus. We’ll see. Until then, we’re almost halfway through with chapter 8! Enjoy!

Part 8: Comforts for a Bad Day

                The front door slams shut behind me. I’m in a foul mood and I’ll be damned if the whole neighborhood doesn’t know it at this point. Peeling off my wet clothes in favor of something drier, I grab my favorite pair of shorts only to find that the dryer had eaten a hole in them and they are now useless. So I have to settle for sweats.

                I start dinner, just trying to make something simple and quick. I make the mistake of stepping out of the room for just a few minutes, when I come back, I’m greeted with fire. Trying not to panic but cussing all the way, I jam a metal lid over the pan and turn the stove off. I keep an eye on the thing for well over an hour before I was even brave enough to open it again and, thankfully, it’s out. However, I have to find something new for dinner, but I’m so angry and fed up that I just flop on the sofa.

                With a click, I turn on the TV and put a random show on in the background. When I’m0 finally calm enough to attempt dinner again, everything goes black.

                “You’ve got to be kidding meeeEEEEEEEEE!” I shout. No electricity means no heating up food, no TV or laptop, and no light for just about anything else. I lay in the darkness, hungry and in a seething fury, face first into the sofa.

                My phone starts to meow, meaning it can only be one of two people. My hand slaps across the floor before I find the device and bring it to my ear.

                ‘Hello?’ comes across much more muffled through the fabric of my couch.

                “_____?”

                ‘Hi Jumin’ isn’t any clearer.

                “_____, are you okay?” I don’t give an answer. “_____?!”

                Rolling over, I heave the biggest sigh. “Hi Jumin.”

                “Don’t scare me like that,” he sighs. “Are you alright? You don’t sound too thrilled to talk to me.”

                I grumble, “It’s fine. What’s up?”

                “Seriously. What’s wrong?”

                “Just a bad day…How was your day? Did your presentation for the cat hotel go well?”

                “I ended up postponing it. Do you want to talk about your day?”

                “Not really.”

                “Come on, _____. Tell me about it.”

                Groaning, I sit up. “My stupid phone didn’t charge last night so my morning alarm never went off and I was late for work. My clients were furious, which is understandable. Later, I had a dog bite me and the owner said it was my own fault.”

                “That doesn’t sound right.”

                “I refused to work with his dog without a muzzle which he refused and left without paying for the work that I DID do and scattering all the stuff on the counter on the floor. Shortly after that, a sick cat came in and, after giving my diagnosis, I was told that I’m a money hungry idiot who has no idea what I’m doing. I don’t think that poor cat will make it another year. People in general have been so rude today.”

                “Those people haven’t a clue what they’re talking about. You’re the best vet that I’ve ever come across and plenty of your clients have given your clinic high ratings.”

                “I know, but those people still pissed me off. And I worked right through lunch to catch up on my late appointments, but at least Yoosung was nice enough to share his lunch with me.”

                “When did Yoosung start working with you?”

                “Not long after your birthday. He’s smart.”

                “I agree. As long as he’s not stuck in his video games.”

                “I left my wallet at home so I couldn’t buy anything when I finally got off work, which I didn’t find out until I was already in line to buy something. Then it started raining shortly after I started walking home so I was drenched, I’ll be surprised if I don’t get sick. I almost set my house on fire trying to make food.”

                “What?!”

                “I had a grease fire. And now the electricity is out and I have no food in the cupboards unless I’d like to eat raw pasta.”

                He hums on the other end. “You’re right. You have had a rough day.”

                “Yep. Sucks,” I grumble. “Hmm, I might have string cheese in the fridge.”

                “_____, I have to go. Something just came up.”

                “Oh, okay,” I mutter.

                “Everything will be alright. You’re strong. I know you are.”

                A small smile crosses my lips. “Thanks Jumin. Talk to you later.”

                “Goodbye.”

                I stare at the picture of the man in cat ears from his birthday party for a moment before a loud meow stabs at my silent pondering.

                “Yeah, okay. Dinner time Mako,” I announce, heading into the kitchen to find the cat food to feed my animal. Afterwards, I go rummaging through my cupboards in search of something decent to eat. I stare at the open cupboards from my kitchen table trying to come up with something.

                My doorbell goes off.

                “Oh geeze. What now?” I hiss, heading for the front door. Pulling the entrance open, I stare at the dark figure for a moment. “Jumin?”

                “Hurry now. Eat up before it gets cold,” he orders, shoving something warm into my hands and ushering me inside.

                “Huh?! What the heck is this? What are you doing here?”

                “From the sounds of it, you haven’t eaten much, so I had my chef make you something.” He holds up a bag. “And I brought light.”

                “You can keep those if they’re candles,” I grumble. “Knowing my luck, one would tip over and burn my house down. I don’t need a second fire today.”

                He looks into a bag. “Um, more like lanterns. But I need to put the batteries in.” He moves to the next bag. “And I don’t personally care for them, but I heard that girls like sweets, especially when they’re sad, and I wasn’t sure which you like best so I got several different ones.”

                “I know I didn’t eat a lot today, but are you trying to make me fat?” I laugh. The sweet gesture, even if coming from such an awkward man not entirely comfortable with his feelings, seems to melt all the troubles of the day away.

                “Of course not. I’m trying to make you feel better.” He pushes me towards the couch. “Now go eat.”

                I sit on the couch, watching the rich heir fumble with batteries in a lantern. It’s clear that this wasn’t anything he’s had to deal with before, but the simple fact that he’s here, trying to cheer me up makes me happy inside.

                Opening the take-out box, I find something much fancier than I expected.

                “Holy crap. This is probably worth more than everything I’ve eaten all week combined.”

                Jumin frowns at me. “Really? Perhaps I should have my driver deliver you lunch every day.”

                “N-No no! Don’t do that,” I scold. “I told you, I can take care of myself.”

                “I know,” he sighs. “But sometimes I wish you’d just let me do something for you.”

                “Why? Couldn’t you use the money to pamper Elizabeth instead?”

                “I could. She’s…She’s very important to me. She was a gift from my two best friends and I’ve often believed that she was the only who truly understood me.” The man looks into the darkness, as if he’s remembering something. “I always thought that emotions were useless to me, allowing me to be taken advantage of by people who just wanted to get close to me for my money.”

                “I mean, a lot of people probably did that,” I reply, poking the food around the plate. “You were just protecting yourself.”

                “That’s true, but I’ve come to realize that perhaps I took it a little too far. Still, it’s not like any of those efforts mattered once I met someone who didn’t care about my status in life; once I met you.” Those dark eyes sparkle as he turns to me.

                I frown. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

                With a roll of his eyes, he smiles. “I can’t help but be a little happier when I see you.”

                “Aww, just a little?” I tease. Deep down, I pray he doesn’t notice the effect his words have on my insides, turning me to mush.

                “Alright, my entire day can turn around when you’re part of it. I guess that’s why I felt I had to drop everything to come over tonight.”

                “Oh god. Please tell me you didn’t traumatize poor Jaehee just to come see me.”

                “She’s…currently dealing with the board of directors I left hanging,” he says with a smirk.

                “Wow! Jumin, that so irresponsible!” I shout, unable to hide my smile.

                “Couldn’t help it. Someone important needed me.”

                I feel suddenly warmer beneath Jumin’s gentle gaze. The temperature skyrockets when an arm wraps around my shoulders, pulling me in. A soft kiss grazes my temple.

                “I should really stop distracting you. You need to eat.”

                We make light conversation before I start digging through the bag of sweets. The man had brought them for me and I’m not going to let them go to waste.

                “Ooo, Starbursts!” I rip open the yellow packaging. “Hah, they say that if you put the whole thing in your mouth and unwrap it without tearing the wrapper, you’re a good kisser.”

                “Oh really? Are you?”

                I shrug. “I dunno. I don’t really believe in stuff like that, but it’s fun to do.” I pop a pink one into my mouth, working the wrapper off with my teeth and tongue before pulling it out. “See?”

                “Let me see.”

                Without warning, Jumin leans in, cupping my face in his hands. Butterflies flutter in my stomach as his lips press against mine. The last time we had kissed, Jumin hadn’t been himself and I had forgotten just how soft his lips were; I had forgotten how much I enjoy his kiss.

                The man pulls away with a soft smile. “I suppose I may not be the best judge, but I think it was a good kiss.”

                My blushing face lets a smile slip. “Wow. Thanks for the very in-depth observation.”

                “Anytime.”

                Jumin and I casually share the sweets and the conversation. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable here in my little apartment, completely different than the last time we kissed or from my day earlier. I could spend forever like this, alone with him.

                I gasp softly, reaching out to snatch my phone off the coffee table to turn off the alarm. Cracking my neck, I sit up and the couch beneath me moves.

                Moves?

                Looking down, I find that I’m sitting on Jumin and no tomato could compare to my face. His eyelashes flutter as he blinks the sleep away. Looking up at me, a light chuckle escapes him.

                “What’s that look for?”

                “Y-You fell asleep here?”

                The man pushes himself up, putting his face extremely close to mine. “Of course. You looked so peaceful that, as a pillow, I couldn’t disturb you.”

                In an attempt to hide my embarrassment and shock, I put a hand to my face. “Could you be anymore shameless?”

                Jumin presses a kiss to my forehead. “If that’s what you’d like.”

                Regaining my composure, I shove the man back down on the couch, leering over him. Meeting his expectant gaze, I just want to make out with him desperately. I want everything to just leave us alone and let me express how I feel about him.

                But do I deserve him?

                It’s the same question I had asked myself the last time we spent a night together. I wish I hadn’t thought of it because now I’m resisting every urge to just be happy with him right here, right now. I grip at his shirt desperately.

                “_____? What’s wrong?”

                Sighing, I get to my feet, removing myself from him. “You were wrong.”

                “What?”

                I look down at my phone, looking for an excuse. “Oh crap. I gotta get ready for work. Um, thank you, for last night. It wasn’t such a bad day after all.”

                He smiles, standing up. “No problem. I’m glad I was able to make you feel better.”Now he glances at his phone and sighs. “Assistant Kang is not going to be happy with me.”

                “You’re going to send that woman to an early grave,” I tease.

                “I guess I’d better head home to prepare for my meeting.”

                “Probably a good idea.”

                I bid Jumin goodbye and watch his car drive away. The false smile slides from my face the further away he gets.

                “You were wrong,” I repeat. “I do care about your status. You deserve more than me.”

Accidental Snowbirding

So I went to Florida and accidentally became a snowbird. I drove south in September with no real timeframe for anything in mind, and I ended up staying on the Gulf coast north of Tampa (Pasco County) for almost three months, minus a couple of weeks I was in Georgia.

Some friends have asked me how the new, nomadic life is going, and I tell them that it hasn’t really felt that nomadic. I’ve enjoyed being close to my friend Ron — I had a regular rotation of several campgrounds, none of them more than half an hour from his place. It reminded me of the decade-plus ago when we both lived in Denver, in old, cheap apartments within walking distance of each other. A friend calls and says “do you want to come over?” and you just go over. It’s lovely. We both got into paddleboarding (more on that later) and explored some rivers. We even took an airbnb trip to the Smokies and northern Alabama before the pandemic escalated. So it’s been interesting and good, if different from the types of images that motivated me to buy this big-ass van (wilderness, solitude, aspen groves, desert mesas).

Here’s what I remember from the last few months:

A cotton-candy-pink bird forages on a shoreline and it is so quiet that you can hear its three-clawed feet pattering in the mud. Ninety minutes later we are scarfing down fried chicken in the car in a crowded parking lot.

In the trailer park, people drive golf carts around in loops: maybe this passes for exercise, or maybe they are hoping to run into someone to talk to.

Until November, I sweat and sweat and sweat, and then it cools off enough for me to run in the morning and it’s glorious. 

During the day, there is constant traffic and the lights are always red. There are a lot of billboards, all promising different things, but the one that makes us angry is the one that says “Jesus promises stability.”

I spend the night at a trailer park and the ladies in the office are sweet and efficient and wearing masks. But the spot I’m assigned is across from a mobile home with one of those flags that is half the U.S. flag and half the Confederate flag, and although my privilege probably keeps me safe here, I keep running through the equations with slightly different variables: who would be safe in this spot, in this trailer park/this county/this state/this country, and under what circumstances? What could make all of us safer? And the people who chose to pay for and display that absurdity of a flag, why is that flag the story they tell themselves? And what is the topography of the shared responsibility for all of this bullshit?

We paddle the Hillsborough River and see no other boaters but two alligators. One is basking on a log, and when I turn my head for a second it drops into the water with a massive splash: one moment there was a six-foot alligator; the next moment there was nothing but ripples. It was that fast. My friend decides he will not paddle here alone.

I see live oaks that have Spanish moss hanging from their branches, sure — but they’re also covered in lichens, and on the horizontal branches there are carpets of multiple kinds of moss and clusters of foot-tall ferns. It’s a whole ecosystem in one tree.

I’m driving “home” (most frequent campground) late one night and I am alone on a very dark road. In my headlights, I see a human figure in the middle of my lane, facing directly at me. I think: goblin! But it is a human person. I swerve into the other lane in case he moves. But he doesn’t move a muscle. He is in a half-crouch with his hands on his knees. I catch a glimpse of him in profile as I pass: his face is set in a rictus, jaw clenched. He is still staring straight ahead, unblinking, as if he hasn’t even seen me.

I call Ron just to reassure myself that I haven’t slipped out of the real human world and into someplace else.

“Oh my God,” he says. “But no, you’re still in the real world. There’s a lot of meth around here. He’s not a demon or anything. It’s just Florida.” He is wearing a dark sweatshirt and standing in the dark on a dark road; what if he gets hit? I call the police and I hate that to this day I still wonder if that was the right decision.

We get into paddleboarding. Ron already has an inflatable paddleboard, and I buy one with money I should be saving for things like van insulation or the loose crown on my lower left molar that is already living on borrowed time. But the paddleboard is amazing. Previously, I hadn’t gotten it: why stand when you could sit? I’m lazy and I have crappy feet; I hate standing. But this isn’t regular standing. It’s walking-on-water standing. In our favorite river, the Weeki Wachee, you can see all kinds of things from a paddleboard that it’s harder to see in a kayak, just because of the angle. On a paddleboard, you look straight down and there’s a fish striped like a zebra, an old pine log submerged ten feet down in the clear water, a scurrying blue crab, a bed of rippled sand.

We start at the public park and paddle up against a stiff current. Twice, we get to the three-mile mark and there is the same black-and-white cormorant in the same tree both times. We are familiar with the fact that if you time it right, so that you get back to the park as late as possible without actually paddling in the dark, and the crowds taper off so you have the river to yourself, the deepest pools are turquoise on our way upriver and viridian on our way down.

There are sometimes manatees on the river. In this part of the world, manatees are THE charismatic megafauna. And they are charismatic as hell. Once we are out late, a couple miles up the river with no one else around, and we see a mother and baby grazing on eelgrass in shallow water. We watch for minutes, mesmerized. The baby is tiny for a manatee: about the size of a Corgi. It must be very, very new. There is another manatee that I’m pretty sure I see several times on different days: it is very plump, with three pink slash marks across its back. We get to the point where, if there is a throng of other boaters stopped near where manatees are feeding, we don’t try to stop and see the manatees. We’ve seen them before, and we’ll see them again, when we don’t have to worry about the people and their kayaks and canoes in the current.

The last time I went to the Weeki Wachee, I went alone. The leaves were turning, because the calendar’s close-to-Christmas is Florida’s fall. I hadn’t ever planned on seeing a blazing orange maple next to tropical blue water, but it happened. Close-knit formations of big, soft gray, doe-eyed fish darted under my feet, and at the appointed time the water started turning dark green. In one of the final bends just upriver from the park, there is a deep spot called Hospital Hole. As I paddled down towards it, I saw one manatee, then another break the surface to breathe. I drifted over the hole, away from the manatees near the surface, and I saw the outline of another one eight or ten feet down against the very dark blue of very deep water.

The Weeki Wachee is a very narrow river, usually not more than thirty feet across and often only twenty. It’s also shallow, four or five feet on average, twelve where the current has carved a deep groove or pocket. Hospital Hole is at one of the river’s widest points, I’d guess maybe 150 feet from bank to bank. The hole itself — technically a sinkhole, but with a couple of small springs feeding into it — is only about 30 or 40 feet wide, but 140 feet deep. It goes down so far that there are different layers of water: freshwater, saltwater, a layer that is anoxic, another layer that is so full of hydrogen sulfide that divers can smell the rotten-egg odor even though they’re breathing compressed air. I read online that the manatees often go to Hospital Hole to sleep at night. The sinkhole-spring, like a big deep pocket, gives them space to stay together and still spread out. They can sink down below where they have to worry about boat engines or curious paddle boarders or whatever else manatees worry about. Every so often, they come up to breathe, then sink down again. Respire, rest, repeat.

It’s 7:17 p.m. as I am writing this, so they’re probably there right now.

So that’s Florida! Other, more nuts-and-bolts things that have happened include...

I installed lights and outlets. This was a big project and a big deal, since it means that I can have things like a fan (to keep me from sweating to death in the summer), an electric cooler (a.k.a. mini-mini-fridge) for things like vegetables and hummus and cheese and cold boozy beverages, and, well, lights at night that aren’t a harsh blue-white solar lantern, which is what I was using before October, when I made these improvements. Anything electrical is always a little scary; I’m nervous every time I have to go into the breaker box and always surprised when I’m able to touch it without shocking myself. I also had an extremely minimal understanding of how to splice wires together and how to connect all these lights to each other, to the dimmer switch, and to the breaker box. This involved a lot of googling, and even though the DIY van blogs seemed to say that installing lights would take half a day, it took me the better part of two days. But it’s done, and I’m very happy with it. Fiat lux, motherf***er!

My new favorite public agency is the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Occasionally, if I’d had a few drinks at Ron’s house, I spent the night parked in his driveway. Sometimes I stayed in private RV parks. (This was mostly driven by the need to empty the van’s port-a-pot once a week or so — public dump stations are not easy to find in this area of Florida; the closest was about an hour away.) But mostly, I stayed at campground operated by the SWFWMD. These campgrounds are in big tracts of forested, marshy, watery land, and they are great primitive campgrounds that cost $0. There’s no water, no showers, no other fancy campground amenities, but there is usually one outhouse, and each campsite has a picnic table and a fire pit. They’re basic and beautiful.

My favorite campground is called the Serenova Tract. It’s about 15 minutes from Ron’s house, and the campground is in a bunch of pines and live oaks. Horses are allowed, and on one of the last weekends I spent there, several people with horses stayed overnight and hung up Christmas lights. The next morning, they were joined by a dozen other horses and riders who all went for a morning trail ride through the woods. I was insanely jealous.

The other SWFWMD campground I stayed at was called Cypress Creek. It’s a little farther from Ron’s place than Serenova, so it was my second choice when Serenova was full but my van’s shitter wasn’t. It’s a beautiful spot, with tons of big pines. But right now I’m a little wary of it because the last time I stayed there I woke up from a dead sleep at 4:51 a.m. when I heard someone singing and talking to themselves. (The campground had been totally empty when I got there and still was as far as I could see.) It was probably just someone who had come in on foot and was drinking because it was cold (40 degrees) outside, but it was still a bit unnerving. 

I also have a favorite RV park. I was thinking that my relationship with these places would be strictly utilitarian, and it still mostly is. But out of the three RV parks that I’ve stayed at, there’s one small one called Suncoast that I actually kind of enjoyed: even though I only went there occasionally, the three staff people remembered me when I called or came in, and they often gave me a discount on their regular rates because I don’t use any electricity. They (both staff and most guests) also seem to be taking pretty good pandemic precautions. (I actually saw someone get kicked out of the office when they tried to come in without a mask, something that I’ve never seen in any other business since March!) The place has nice big pine trees, and by the office there’s a table where people put free food that they aren’t using, or occasionally two-day-old bread that someone got from Publix for free. The last time I was there, some people had decorated their campers and RVs with lights and it was kind of charming. I still heavily prefer to be out in the woods by myself and not spending any money, but I’m glad I found someplace pleasant for my once-a-week-or-so sewer/water needs.

I figured out how to stay warm while sleeping. This is a bigger deal than it sounds because a) I haven’t insulated the van yet, so at night, it’s only a few degrees warmer than whatever the temperature is outside, and b) I’m a very cold sleeper. Florida is SUPER WARM compared to any other place I’ve ever lived, but in December, it started getting a little chilly at night: down into the fifties, then the forties, then, a few nights ago, 30 degrees. I’ve camped in near-freezing or slightly-below-freezing temperatures before, but sometimes it wasn’t very comfortable — even with good long underwear and socks and a hat and a zero-degree-rated sleeping bag. But I’ve figured out a system for my bed that uses four blankets, layered like a licorice allsort: a quilt, a heavy wool blanket, another quilt, and a faux-wool blanket. If it gets below 40, I can add my zero-degree down sleeping bag and be not just comfortable but actively toasty, like a baking croissant.

Unrelatedly, I’ve been having a hard time getting out of bed in the morning.

I’ve found that my life in a van is basically like my life has been anywhere else. I work. I sleep. I stay up late reading things on the internet when I should be sleeping. Sometimes I go running or do yoga (while trying not to bump into the cabinet or kick the front console or hit the ceiling). Sometimes I do fun things, like paddleboarding or talking to friends. I make goals and plans and don’t follow through on them, except when very very occasionally I do. But when I’m looking up van stuff online, I often run across photos of people who are #selfemployed #vanlife and the photos of them working are:

The doors are open, framing a view of the cerulean sea, so that you can practically smell the gentle breeze blowing over the dunes. She has a laptop on her lap and is looking thoughtfully out to sea while a cup of tea steeps on a tray that is on the white coverlet of her bed.

A man is seated at the dinette in the back of his van. He has a laptop, a French press, a mug of coffee, and a plate with two scones on it on the table. The table, and in fact the whole dinette with its two upholstered benches, would be at home on a small luxury yacht, and it’s the kind of dinette that you make into a bed at night. The astute, intent expression on the man’s face give the viewer to understand that he is competent and disciplined and never stays up two hours past his bedtime because he’s too lazy to lower the dinette table and rearrange the cushions and put on all his sheets and blankets. We are also given to understand that the electrical system in his van would have no problems handling the power drain of a bean grinder, even though he is clearly parked in the high Rockies — again, with the back doors open, the better to take in the late spring air and see the fresh green of the aspen trees — and it’s often cloudy. Lastly, we are given to understand that he baked those scones himself, because when he’s not working, hiking, lumberjacking, or otherwise living his best life, he enjoys unwinding by baking bread and pastries. (Not in the van; don’t be silly! He bakes outside, over a wood fire.)

(A tangent: Why do so many people have their van doors open in photos I see online? Do they only stay in places with no bugs? If I tried that in Florida, or even Maryland or Colorado half the year, I’d be awake half the night swatting at mosquitoes and/or flies.)

The windows of the van are covered in silver bubble-wrap, so very little light gets in. Absolutely no doors are open, because the van is parked behind a Dunkin Donuts so the woman can get free wifi and not burn through all the data on her phone plan. She takes a break to heat up a can of Campbell’s soup on an alcohol stove, adding a handful of dehydrated mixed vegetables, to be healthy. As she stirs the soup, she gazes contemplatively out the windshield towards the adjacent parking lot, where there is an IHOP. #vanlife

A woman is sitting in the passenger seat of her van with her feet on the dashboard and her laptop on her lap. Beside her in the cupholder is a steaming Hydroflask full of the cheapest tea she could buy at Publix. The van is parked in a grove of live oaks. Spanish moss sways gently in the morning breeze. Behind the woman, in the dark recesses of the van, sets of clothes are hanging: leggings and a shirt, still sweaty, by the side doors, a bathing suit over the sink, a t-shirt and shorts for sleeping in by the rear cabinet. Several kitchen towels are draped on the driver’s seat and on the dashboard because the cab leaks above the sun visors when it rains, and even though she’s tried caulking it three times, she still can’t get it to stop. #vanlife

The good thing, though, is that I’m still getting work and making a living. I can do it someplace that’s safe, without having to risk my life to do it. And I’m getting paid a fair hourly wage. But then the very terrible thing is that everyone should be able to say what I just said, but so many people can’t: they’re not making a real living through their work, they have to risk their lives to do it, and they’re not getting paid a fair wage.

(Brief interlude as I stare at the ceiling angrily.)

Here’s what I’m doing next: I left Pasco County on the 16th. I’ll be in what I think of as “traveling quarantine” until the 30th, staying in a national forest near Jacksonville. (With a couple of stops at state parks to refill water, empty the port-a-pot, and maybe take a real shower.) I’ll be in Maryland on New Year’s Eve and will stay at my parents’ while I insulate the van, build interior walls, and do a bunch of other stuff so that I can call it (mostly) finished. Then I’m thinking of going to New Mexico and spending late winter/early spring there… parked on top of a mesa… sipping a cup of French-press coffee on my white coverlet while I thoughtfully gaze out the open doors of my van… (I really would like to park on top of a mesa though.)

Seeing all the food you prepared for dinner wasn't making you hungry at all. You called the kids from upstairs and sat down, pouring water into your glass.

"I am so hungry!!" Junsun exclaimed as he sat down and started eating. You smiled and stared at the two while they ate their food.

You thought about Yoongi's new affair. This young girl who had a disrespectful and cruel mouth. You sighed, looking at the wall in front of you where multiple pictures hanged on. You tried to figure out what she was implying on when she said that she already planned all of this.

"Mommy?" Ahran interrupted your thoughts. You turned to her and smiled, waiting for her to start talking.

"Why didn't daddy come to eat today?" She asked. Your smile faded and you put your glass on the table, trying to think of a good answer. "We two haven't seen daddy in a week now ..." her voice sounded hurt and she looked down. You turned to Junsun who was nodding.

"I miss Daddy ..." Junsun mumbled, biting his lip.

You took a deep breath and watched your children being sad about the fact that their father didn't spend time with them in a week. After the incident from today, you didn't want to talk to him but you put your pride away for your kids.

"No... he wanted to be with you. He is probably totally late due to much work ..." you lied and saw their faces getting cheerless until you finally gave in. "I will call him, okay?" You hesitantly pulled out your phone and dialed his number, waiting for his answer. He didn't pick up and you could tell why. Nonetheless, you acted as if someone was on the phone.

"Hello?" You started, seeing your children eyes lighten up. They watched with enthusiasm. "You're still working? Um, Junsun and Ahran are waiting for you ... tomorrow? Alright." You pout fakely and ended the fake call.

"And?" Junsun asked you.

"He said, um, he will pick you up from school and bring you to the amusement park tomorrow and after that, he will watch a movie with you." You lied, literally hating yourself for doing so. They jumped over joy and hugged you.

"Daddy will be home, finally!" Junsun sang which made you chuckle but feel guilty, immediately.

"Alright, guys! Time to brush your teeth and go to bed! You have to get up early, right?" You clapped in your hands while you stood up. You caressed their hair as they ran upstairs. Now you had to tell Yoongi to pick them up tomorrow. You decided to text him because in that way he will see it for sure. Hopefully, he won't cancel it due to his full schedule. At least he could cancel it for his children.

You cleaned the kitchen and went upstairs to check on your kids. First, you went into Junsun's room. His blanket was halfway on the floor and you smiled to yourself. Like father like son. You pulled the blanket over his shoulders and kissed his forehead before leaving his room to check on Ahran who was also asleep. You still went up to her and kissed her before going into your room. You changed into your pajama and lied down on the huge bed. Before you drifted off you checked your phone if there was any reply by Yoongi which wasn't the case even though it said 'read'. Putting your phone on your nightstand you turned to the other side of your bed. Your hands were under your cheek, trying to warm up. You hoped for his ignorance to be a sign that he had time and would pick them up.

You moved so much and tried to fall asleep. Something was bothering you today. The fact that you knew the real feelings of Yoongi towards you and your marriage or the fact that you shared a conversation with his new girl. It didn't matter that she planned all of this. Right now, all you could tell her was 'congratulations' because Yoongi was already head over heels for her.

If she tries a slight move on your kids you would forget about humanity.

Aghh why do I even worry about her words!? She is young and immature. What can she do other than taking all of the materialistic things from you?

You tried stopping all of your thoughts which were bothering you right now. Closing your eyes tightly you drifted off to sleep. _ "Mom, dad will pick us up today right?" Ahran asked for clarification. You nodded, looking at the road where the bus would come any minute soon. You always waited with your children until their bus came to make sure their way to school is safe. When the bus arrived you kissed them.

"Behave, alright!" you said as they nodded and jumped into the bus. You waved them their goodbyes and wanted to go home when you heard a familiar voice stopping you.

"Mis Y/F/N" you turned around, being greeted by your landlord. He smiled at you.

"Oh, Ahjussi ... how are you?" You smiled and he nodded slightly.

"I am fine thank you ... " you knew that he wanted to tell you something. "We already know us for so long and I know that you didn't pay the bill for the electricity and water on purpose. You probably forgot ... I just wanted to remind you since I saw you here" he said, your smile dropping down.

"Oh yes ... you're right. I, I forgot" you lied and looked around, being a little embarrassed about this situation. "I.. uh, we will pay the rent as soon as possible" you bowed down before leaving him to hop into your house. Yoongi must have stopped paying for the needs of the house. You also weren't able to use your own credit cards since he stopped the bank transferring money on it. You sighed and went to the kitchen to look up if there is something you need to buy since you wanted to go grocery shopping. Once you opened the fridge you were greeted by an empty one. There were some vegetables and fruits in the fridge but that's all. You closed the fridge, grabbing your purse in which you had a bit of money in it. Enough for going grocery shopping.

You knew that you couldn't sit home anymore. It was time to stand up for yourself and your children. You had to find a job to make a living. Even though Yoongi has to pay spousal support for their children after your divorce you promised yourself to never touch their money.

While going shopping you decided to look for a good job. You knew it was hard since you didn't work for more than 10 years now. They would prefer younger employees but still, you didn't wanna throw away a chance. Also, you decided to tell Yoongi to pay the bills this month, the last time. At least for his children.

Putting on your jacket you left your house and went into the city to go grocery shopping. With all of the grocery bags, you looked up the showcases if there is someone looking for a new employee. Sadly you couldn't find even one. That's why you decided to go home and look for a job on the internet. Nowadays everything is possible because of new technology. Also, it was already late and your children must be about to return with Yoongi.

You put the bags on the counter of your kitchen and grabbed your phone to look at the time. It was already 6 pm and you wondered why they still haven't returned. Just as you wanted to call Yoongi you changed your mind. Maybe they're doing something fun and enjoyable right now, it would be a pity if you would destroy their moment. Just as you wanted to place the groceries your phone rang. You picked up the unknown caller ID.

"Hello?" You mumbled.

"Is this Mis Y/F/N?" The female voice asked from the other line.

"Yes ... how can I help you?"

"Unbelievable! How can you let your kids stay in school for so long? Did you forget to pick them up!? They're already waiting for their parents to pick them up, for more than 4 hours-" you furrowed your eyebrows and tried to catch everything the angry woman spatted out.

"Wait, wait! I don't understand what you say. Didn't their father pick them up?" You asked in disbelief.

"Are you deaf Ma'am? No one came ... that's why they're sitting here" She said rudely.

Your eyes widened "I, I will come as fast as I can" you ended the phone call, feeling the atmosphere getting tense. Why the hell didn't Yoongi pick them up!? Furiously, you grabbed your phone and dialed his number. He didn't pick up and you called him again. Over and over again until he picked up.

"WHAT!?" He yelled from the other line.

"WHY DIDN'T YOU PICK OUR CHILDREN UP?!" you yelled back, feeling him getting astonished.

"What are you talking about? You never told me to pick them up!" he remarked, making you feel more irritated and mad.

"You're gonna pick me up right now and we will drive to our children's school to get them home!" You said, not pausing once.

"What are you talking about??" He asked, sounding confused.

"Our kids are in that goddamnit school and now you will drive me there to pick them up. RIGHT NOW" you wanted to save your energy for hissing at him until you saw him face to face. You ended the phone call and grabbed your jacket which you put on and waited outside for him to arrive. You accepted that he was rude to you, that he ignored you but you will never accept him ignoring his children. Not like that. His car parked in front of you hopped in, closing the door furiously.

"Hey! Calm down!" He said and looked at you "What are my children doing in school at this hour?" He asked.

"I guess I should ask you Mr. Min because you didn't pick them up!" You sighed, going through your hair.

"What do you mean? Why should I pick them up?" He asked, getting frustrated and confused about the whole situation right now.

"Because I texted you to pick them up. Yesterday! Because they missed their father and wanted to spend time with him when their father clearly doesn't care anymore-" he cut you off, furrowing his eyebrows.

"I didn't receive any text message from you!" He exclaimed, pulling out his phone to show you his recent messages which were empty.

"No way" you pulled out your phone and showed him the texts you sent him. His eyes widened as he saw the date.

"That's not possible... I mean-" you cut him off, knowing who could've possibly deleted the messages. "Just go already!" He pressed the gas pedal angrily.

The whole ride was silent until you arrived at your destination. You jumped out of the car and ran into the school, followed by Yoongi running behind you. Once you opened the principal's room you were met by your disappointed children.

"Mom!" Junsun's face light up when you kneeled down to hug the two.

"I am so sorry!" You said looking at the principal who sat on their desk. The woman stood up.

Yoongi kneeled down as well and pulled them into a deep hug. "I am so sorry! Appa will make it better" he said, sounding desperate and hurt.

You stood up and looked at the principal.

"Next time I can't make sure to find them and let them wait in school safely. You should look for your children..." she said, guiding you outside. She wasn't pleased with the idea of waiting for someone's parents to arrive and you noticed how annoyed she was right now. You thanked her before she left and were left alone with Yoongi. You turned to him and saw him making up to the two since they were sad about the fact that the couldn't spend time with their father.

"Tomorrow is our day!" He promised them and you saw them smiling which made your distress fade away even for a little bit. Once he made eye contact with you his smile faded and he helped the children into the car.

"Listen ... I didn't see the text" he said and you nodded.

"I believe you, Yoongi" you said honestly. "I guess I know who deleted them, though-" he cut you off not wanting to argue.

"Can you stop talking about here right now? The topic is about me and my kids ..." he mumbled. He knew that his new affair was possibly the reason for him not receiving a text but he was too ashamed to admit it.

"Yeah ... I mean it was a demon who deleted them, trying to avoid you spending time with your children" you whispered, knowing that he heard all of that. He rolled his eyes and went to his car. How can he be so stubborn? You hopped into the car and drove home with Yoongi. On your way home you saw Junsun and Ahran falling asleep from the inside mirror.

Yoongi parked in front of your house and turned around. A huge smile made its way to his lips as he saw his children sleeping. You watched him admiring his children. It was wrong to think that he doesn't care for his children. In the end, he is still their father who loves them as much as you love them, right? Just because he wants to divorce doesn't mean that he doesn't love his children anymore. Just because his love for you faded doesn't mean it faded for his children as well. You were silly enough to judge his responsibility and passion for his children just because you hated him for divorcing you.

"Will you take Junsun? I will take my princess ..." he smiled as he hopped out of the car to lift Ahran in bridal style. You took Junsun on your back in piggyback style because he wasn't heavy at all. You unlocked your door and switched on the lights so you two could see where you were going. The only sound which was heard was your footsteps and the stairs cracking quietly. You brought Junsun into his room and changed his clothes so he could sleep comfortably. Kissing his cheek gently, you left the room and went into Ahrans to be met by a confused Yoongi trying to change her clothes. You let out a quiet chuckle while opening the drawer to pull out her pajamas. You kneeled down next to Yoongi.

"Did you already forgot where her clothes are?" you grinned slightly. He bit his lip and watched you changing Ahrans clothes. She opened her eyes while you lied her down on her bed. "Mom?" she mumbled half asleep. "Where is dad?" she slowly drifted off. Yoongi squeezed her hand tightly and kissed her forehead.

"I'm always here, princess!" Yoongi had always a soft spot for Ahran in his heart. It was his first child, the first time he got called "Dad". When you found out about your pregnancy, Yoongi always came home with pink baby clothes. Even though you still didn't find out its gender. He was always saying that he had a flair for telling a non-born gender. Little did you know that he desperately wanted to have a daughter and his wish became reality.

As soon as Ahran fell asleep you went downstairs. He had to leave again...

"Would, would you like to have a drink before you leave? Tea? Coffee?" you asked him. He shook his head and looked around the room, biting his lip.

"I will take the kids out tomorrow, so don't worry..." he said and you missed those calm conversations with him. You nodded, not being able to talk right now because at any moment soon your tears would start falling again.

"I, I should get going ..." his breath was coming in gasps.

"Yeah ... you're right ..." you stared into his eyes, wanting to hold him back. Telling him to not leave and to stay with you. The silence filled the room and you wanted to ask him. Anything. Since when he forgot, since when he replaced you and why he stood silent. You wanted to tell him about the precious days where you called each other "mine". What happened to us. To our love. When and why did it stop blooming like your first day? As long as you could listen to his voice you would find anything satisfying.

You watched him leaving slowly as if he waited for you to say something. Why was he so oblivious to this whole situation. Your gaze went to the floor when he opened the door. He didn't look back and left the house. The loud sound of the door closing snapped you out from your trance.

You went to the front door and put your hand on the cold wooden door. Slowly, sliding down on your knees as you started crying in pain.

I really love this fucking page by the way, especially the shading in panel 2. There’s also some great foreshadowing here, but I’ll let you folks find it yourselves.

Something that Matt and I were joking about recently was language and accents in the MLaW verse. While the language that Free Marketeers is essentially supposed to be English (though they call it Treadspake) the accent is pretty different. It took me forever to find but here’s an example of what someone with a heavy Free Market accent sounds like to someone who doesn’t speak Treadspake.

This one is regarding the competitive nature of the Free Market and their attitudes towards monopolies. From your answer regarding an earlier question about the util, I gather that for the most part, monopolies are disliked. My question is this: what guarantees the continuation of this competition instead of the eventual creation of a series of monopolies? I suspect that the Free Market doesn’t have much in the way of Anti-trust laws. Excellent page. I especially love the perspective shot in the second frame.

Zarpaulus - Three words: Mega-fun food inc. There doesn’t seem to be any evidence that they do a thing to prevent monopolies, real life economic Libertarians don’t so why would fictional ones?

rfaramir - You don’t have to fight monopolies, so long as you have no State which can grant one. So-called “natural monopolies” are rare and not a problem to the free market. Think of a one-of-a-kind mineral mine. Consumers did fine before the mine was discovered, life got better when it’s otherwise-unobtanium made production more efficient, but if the price goes too high, the free market will work at creating alternatives or doing without, going back to previous production modes without the others-unobtainable substance. Potential competition keeps monopolists from charging truly damaging monopoly prices.

Iarei - That simply is not true. You’re drawing an imaginary line in the sand between ‘monopoly’ and ‘dictatorship’ that does not exist. “A government is a body of people, usually notably ungoverned”. In any hypothetical ungoverned free market, the most powerful monopoly necessarily assumes the role of governance. You’ve heard of ‘company stores’ right? Any barrier to entry for competition that exists under a corrupt government is going to exist in a free market system. The only difference is that the company wouldn’t need to bribe any politicians. A question was raised earlier in this comic – “How can Fizziz stay in business if their product is both foul and poisonous”. If you’ve been paying attention here you should already know the answer.

Killercow - No, it tends to be governments that aid monopolies. In a perfectly free market, in theory, a monopoly can’t hold any power because as soon as the price becomes too dear, another company can come and offer competition at a lower price. These are opportunistic people, who would jump at a chance to undercut a company that was being a little too excessive with their prices for their worth, and without a government to aid in forcing opposition out of business, or breaking strikes and such, monopolies would be much harder to obtain. Not impossible, but extremely difficult. For example, look at the role the security contractors play. On one page it is mentioned that Mega Fun Foods is subsidizing their losses to keep them fighting, and it is mentioned that “Few enough companies can do our job”. While they don’t hold a monopoly, because of the couple of other security companies, which keep them from overcharging, they are a specialized and presumably expensive commodity. They have skills that are rare and useful, and charge more for it. But even those skills are not unique to one company. As for Fizziz, I think that was supposed to be more of a joke than a serious commentary on monopoly, but it may have also been something else, like it has a niche market of… I don’t know, horse pee lovers or something. Or it might be an acquired taste. Or maybe they used to offer good products and now people just blindly buy the brand.

Iarei -  Monopolies help themselves, they don’t need a government to do so. All they need is thugs they can pay to shoot anyone not working the line or a sufficiently high barrier to entry. What magic power do you think you have over a monopoly that you don’t have over a government? A working government acts as a check against monopolies. Like, the government that’s literally fighting a monopoly owned mercenary company in this comic? The comic you’re reading? As far as monopolies you might be familiar with go, how about your ISP? If you live in the US I can all but guarantee you you’re overpaying. That’s in a country where the government nominally has legislation intended to prevent monopolies. In this example, it has nothing to do with the government, it has to do with the fact that those companies are better off ripping off the customers in their respective fiefdoms than expanding their infrastructure into areas with competing services with competitive rates. What do you think would happen if your gas, electricity or water were held by a private entity that could set it’s own prices? I’m sure some competing company can come out of nowhere and set up competing utility lines, right? Free market magic, goo! I’m sure you can find your own solution when prices for necessities become to prohibitive, right? Want a drink of water? Hope your rain barrel’s full or you’ll be buying from T. Boone Pickens. Oh no your house is on fire? Don’t worry, Marcus Licinius Crassus is here to help! Someone’s robing your house? Store? Did you pay your protection fund? Oh, and while this is getting beside the point remember that without a government there’s no regulation on things like ‘can that company dump toxic waste in my river’ or ‘can that company sweeten it’s drinks with lead acetate’. Is our governments perfect? Are they even moderately close to good? No, probably not. It still beats the ever living hell out the alternative.

Plaintextman - Remember that regulations like ‘minimum wage’ and ‘standard bread price’ come from governments. These are made to keep monopolies in check, or rather, to effectively grant the common man some power over companies, in turn evening out the concentration of power. However, also true that insane-level OHSA requirements, government-tendered projects to large companies and overtly strict permit regulations are all government-implemented things that can make it hard if not impossible for small players to get in the game, thus supressing competition. So yeah, it’s not really so much a question of whether there is a formal government or not. More a question of how those in power act, for they are the ‘government’. And this is ultimately determined by what kind of rights (formal and de facto) the common man is granted. Do you have the right to shop somewhere else without fear for your life? The right to your own property? Freedom of speech? I love the idea of free markets. They’ve been so successful over the centuries because of that awesome self-correcting mechanism of ‘competition’; just about every city ever had a market place where businesses could offer and compete, much more than can be said of less natural systems like communism. But “total objective freedom” doesn’t really exist, so no market can be truly “free”. Illegal (drug-) industry is example of an ‘anarcho-capitalist free market’ environment that’s also extremely unfriendly to just about everyone except those in power. And the reason why boils down to how uncaring those in power (“government”) are and how little power the common person (consumer) it given: as long as they pay nobody really gives a shit about them. And if they stop paying by say, buying from a cheaper supplier, they might as well die along with that supplier.

I wanted to deviate from the “parents are horrible” rhetoric for a moment, since that’s been running wild on Tumblr for awhile now. And I wanted to talk about something a lot of people don’t really think about - but yet post about all the time. 

I see so many posts that are like “when I have kids ---” blah blah blah and so many of them completely miss the mark. Yes, we all want to give our kids the things we never had. It’s very idealistic and naive to think that you’ll never punish your kids or that you’ll never have those kinds of “oppressive rules” (ie: a bedtime). And so many people are completely missing the best part of being a parent. 

Being sneaky. More below the cut because this turned into a freaking essay. 

It sounds off but hear me out - the absolute best part of being a parent is turning into a stealth 100 bad-ass. From day 1 you turn into a master of trickery, you really do. Don’t believe me. Fucking peek-a-boo. Then, tooth fairy! And the biggest, longest lasting one... Santa Clause. My own father (I’m 35...) will still try to tell me “uh, no... see... Santa’s real”. At this point, it’s a joke but think about that. That’s, for him, a thirty five year old bold faced lie. I’m not talking about the whole psychological bru-ha-ha about how Santa is used as some malicious tool to keep kids in line. No, I’m talking about that Christmas morning surprise. The “holy shit! someone straight up broke into our house and left us presents!”. That’s the sneakiness I’m talking about. The same kind of sneakiness that goes on whenever you just do something nice for someone and then be all “me? oh, it wasn’t me” but it was you and you are 100% enjoying yourself because you didn’t do it for the praise or the recognition, you did it because it was nice. 

And so many people are missing this key point to parenting. It’s not just Santa either, we do this kind of shit all the time. My daughter’s 15 and she loves Peace Teas (like - it’s a problem...) and those suckers are a buck a pop and she can plow through them like the antidote if allowed. We aren’t made of money but we routinely get them for her, nonchalantly put them in the fridge and when she sees them she’s like “omg! you got me some peace teas?!” and we both will be like “no idea what you’re talking about”. Because it’s awesome. She knows we’re lying our asses off but it doesn’t matter - because it’s also teaching her to just do nice things for people not because you want them to thank you or because you want someone to necessarily notice, just do straight up... nice things for someone for no damn reason. 

And then, even better, you get to plan out future sneakiness. For example - my daughter knows full well that if she lives with us after she’s 18 and she’s not going to school (even during the summer). She’ll be expected to have a job because she’ll be expected to pay rent. She already knows that once she gets her car (which we’ll be getting her because it’s insane to expect a sixteen year old to be able to afford a vehicle - it won’t be new but it won’t be a complete piece of crap either), but once she gets it, she’ll have to either pay to put gas in it and pay the insurance on it or earn it by like... watcher her brother or... doing out of role chores - etc. Now - she thinks that this is just us being people like her paying for her car, sorta. What she doesn’t know, or hasn’t figured out, is that this will actually teach her about bills. Not responsibilities because those aren’t just bills but she’ll start to learn about how much things actually cost (because let’s face it - teenagers, most of them, don’t have a damn clue). But back to the rent thing - she’ll be expected to pay rent. Not like a thousand bucks or anything crazy, but like... I don’t know, three or four hundred a month. Because food, electricity, and water all cost money. I’m not talking about mortgage or anything because that’d be paid whether she was there or not. But here’s the thing... that money she pays us? It’ll go into an account that’s for her. So when she does leave - say... she lives with us from age 18 to 22, not unheard of and not impossible either - that’s five years. Say she doesn’t go to college, but goes to trade school or something or she just works during the summer or whatever - or she wants a part time job. Whichever the cast may be, she could easily have paid us about ten grand during those five years. And ya know what? When she wants to move out? Guess what she’ll be getting from us? That ten grand. It’s some sneaky ass shit but it’s got a very good reason behind it. She’ll learn about paying rent (or mortgage for later) etc. She’ll learn about that responsibility but at the same time, I won’t expect her to save any money because come on, saving money is hard as hell mainly because it’s optional - but paying rent? Not so optional. So, we’ll save the money for her. 

Because to me - aside from the sneakiness of it - that’s part of it. I believe that part of being a parent is giving your kid the best shot they can have. You don’t have to be rich to do it - you don’t have to even have money be involved. But you shouldn’t just raise them until they’re 18 and be like “good luck!” No - you should give them their absolute best shot as they go out into the world. Buy them that car - it doesn’t have to be new hell, it just has to be reliable and relatively safe, do whatever you can to help pay for their college or pay for it outright - whatever the case may be. Give them that jump start. They will have earned it if you do it right. And part of doing it right is not letting them know that they’ll have this windfall because then they won’t do shit because they’re still young and why should they be responsible if they know their parents are going to just foot the bill for their first apartment or whatever. Offer to be that co-signer if you can, help them navigate the waters of the adult world because you’ve been in them, up to your freaking eye-balls and they haven’t. They shouldn’t have any idea how to adult. Because they aren’t one, the never have been. You’ve been an adult for awhile and you know like... what’s wrong with the washer when it makes a thumping noise and tries to run away on its own - you know that lining a bowl with foil and then pouring hot grease in there is ten million times easier than washing it out of a pan and you so know not to put it down the drain and why. You know how to find contact information for everything under the sun, even oddly invisible phone numbers for Amazon customer service. You know so much stuff simply because you’ve been there, lived through it - maybe your parents helped you or maybe they didn’t, it doesn’t matter. Because, again, you should give your kid their best shot. Lend your kids your experience, lend them your age when they have to deal with landlords or bankers or anyone who is treating them lesser simply because they’re younger. Lend them your knowledge of all the little things that no one ever thinks about when they leave home. And don’t do all of this stuff from 18, start when they’re younger. Teach your kids, both sons and daughters, how to cook, how to do laundry, how to clean. Give. Them. Their. Best. Shot.

I was driving on the M4.. I had 2 cars in front of me .. I was in the last car in the row ( third car ) .. the car in the front ( First car ) has braked suddenly .. The car in the middle ( second car ) hit it causing it much damage .. I could not stop at the right time and i hit the middle car afterwards .. Now .. The man in the middle car has lied to his insurance company and said that he stopped at the right time but when i hit him i made his car jump to the front and hit the front car .. I have now 2 insurance companies chasing me for money and treat me as a hunt because i had no third party property damage at the time of the accident .. Ok the situation is as follows: I am selling my car for a new one. I have asked my current insurer to transfer my policy to the new car which is fine. However I then questioned about temporarily insuring my old car under the policy and they wanted a ridiculous amount of money for a week - I also do not know how long it will take to sell the car. I questioned the amount and asked what customers generally do when they wish to keep an old car insured. I was told that I could drive my old car on a 3rd party basis as my policy going forward covers me fully comprehensive. I thought fantastic - but then I was shocked when I was told that if I drive the car it is insured 3rd party only but as soon as I park it up somewhere it is uninsured and could be towed away by the police. I have since read my policy document which claim that I can drive any other car 3rd party providing I do not own the car and that there is already insurance in place? hi, i was trying to get a car insurnace quote online today when i realised that under the conviction section there are no codes that correspond to my licence. i am from Northern Ireland and have points currently on my driving licence, when i tried to enter my conviction codes for my insurance quote they were all different. the codes on the drop down list all started with 2 letters e.g. IN60, SP40 but the offence code printed on my licence all start with 50 e.g. 5010042 is this because they are Northern Ireland codes? how do i get my codes onto insurance quote?""

Here is the scoop: Two years ago I injured my knee and got treated for puncture wounds, and had some minor problems with a popping sound here and there over the years. The ghostly maid: The greasy bucket

At a gas station called "The Greasy bucket", Trevor, Pike, and Jeff walked inside. Trevor was in awe at the variety of snacks, drink and other commodities that were before him. The clerk at the counter was a middle-aged man with a plaid shirt and a black hat. "Wow. I've been near gas stations when in the limo. But I didn't know they were like little baby stores." Trevor said. "Um, yeah. Did you think that gas stations only sold gas?" Pike said. Jeff approached the counter and said to the clerk: "Hey, Uncle Ruckus?". "Heya Jeff. Who're your friends?" Ruckus said. "Oh, I told you about Pike right? Well, he has this other friend who, believe it or not, has never seen the inside of a gas station. Isn't that weird?" Jeff said. Ruckus looked at Trevor and saw he was eyeing the hot dog spiner. "Uh hu...(Sigh) Does he live under a rock or something?" "No, he lives in a...Hey, what's wrong?". Trevor dropped his twists, clenched his heart and said : "Oh...Oh no...You've killed me! No! Noooo!", as he slowly fell to the ground. Both Jeff and Pike looked at their defeated foe, with simply saying "Good.". Trevor sat up and both he and Jeff looked at Pike with a blank expression. All three then burst out laughing. As Trevor was behind the counter, he noticed one of the fridges lights went out. The boy approached the fridge and opened it. Trevor noticed that no cold air was coming out. "Hey, Jeff. The fridge stopped working. How do you fix a fridge?" Trevor said. Jeff went up and said "You should have paid attention to what my uncle said. He told us that the fridge sometimes gives out. When that happens, just kick the bottom of it and it'll start again.", then kicked the fridge. Trevor stuck his hand in the fridge and said: "It's still not working.". Pike approached and said: "Maybe kicking isn't what that fridge needs.". "Or maybe you kick hard enough. Let me try." Trevor said. The boy backed up past the wet floor sign and all the way to the other end of the store. He started to briskly run towards the fridge. The man purposely spilled his drink and stepped in it. He fell over and shouted "Ahhhgh. Ow. My leg." Trevor ran up to the man and said: "Hey, are you okay?" "I think my leg is broken. The only thing that can make it better is legal compensation." he said. "I don't what that is, but I think I can make it better." Trevor said, the boy started to pound on the man's chest. She screamed and started to whack Jeff over the head with her purse. The beating leads them out of the bathroom. As Trevor ducked behind the counter, Pike approached and said: "Lady, you have been in there for 3 hours straight. What could you be doing in there?". The lady smacked Pike in the head and knocked him on the floor The lady retreated back to the bathroom. Jeff rose up and said "I think I need something wipe away the horrible site that I have just witnessed.". Trevor got up and said "What about that?", pointing to a slushie machine on the table with three levers, next to the coffee machine. "Perfect. Maybe a well-timed and painful brain freeze can clear away the disturbing images in my head.". The boy grabbed a cup and tried to get a drink, but nothing would come out. Pulling a lever that would normal dispense slushy, didn't seem to work. Even after multiple tries. "That's weird. It looks full." Jeff said. "Maybe it's jammed. Stand back." Pike said. The boy took a toothpick and shuffled it in the nozzle. "Try now." Jeff tried pulling the lever again. But still, not a drop came out. Trevor went up and said, "Maybe it's just unplugged.". He looked at the machine and saw that it not only didn't have a plug, it had no cord. "This thing doesn't even have a cord to plug in with.". "Do you see anything?" Pike said. Trevor kept looking and said "I...I see a sort of screwed on panel. Maybe we just have to replace the batteries.". The boys turned the machine to where it's back is facing the front. "Anybody got a screwdriver?" Jeff said. Pike pulled out a screwdriver from his pocket and said "Here ya go. Found one behind the counter.". He unscrewed the back panel and from behind it, laid a glowing circle. While Trevor and Pike looked confused, Jeff looked like he was about to freak out. "What is that thing?" Pike said. "It looks like a glowing donut." Trevor said. "Th-Th-That-that's a fusion device!" Jeff said. "Hold up. You mean the one that you find in power plant? Why is it the size of a bagel?" Pike said. "Yes. But, what's it doing in a slushie machine? Why does Uncle Ruckus have this?". Suddenly, the light on top of the machine started to blink, followed by the machine violently shaking. "That's not good. Is it?" Trevor said. "I think the fusion device is going critical. If it melts, it'll wipe out half the town." Jeff said. "How do we stop it?" Pike said. "I don- I don't know. I don't know the first thing about nuclear physics.". Pike looked at Trevor, who was on his phone. "What are you doing!?" he said. "Trying to look up how to stop a nuclear meltdown...Yes, I found a video...No, it's 30 minutes long.". "We don't have that kind of time. It's gonna go supernova in less than one.". All three were starting to panic. Mindlessly running around. Trevor stopped and said "Wait a minute. Your uncle said that there was a code we could enter to stabilize it.". Jeff snapped out of his panic and said "That's right! It was 3122. Quick, look for a keypad or something on the machine.". All three frantically searched the slushie machine for a keypad, but they found nothing of the sorts. "I don't understand. If there's no keypad, why have a code?" Pike said. Trevor looked all over the machine, then had an idea. "Quick, turn it back." Trevor shouted. They turned the machine back to where it was facing the right way. "I still don't see the pad." Jeff said. Trevor approached the machine and pulled the lever from the right once. Then pulled the lever from the left once. And then the lever in the middle twice. The machine began to calm down, the light atop it stopped blinking. Steam came out of the machine. All three boys cheered and danced like they never did before, then fell to the floor in relief. "Oh man. I thought we were gonna die for a second. How did you know to pull the levers for the code?" Pike said. "Well, I thought it would be a little strange to use a keypad for a password that only uses three of the first number. Then it hit me. Maybe it wasn't a code, but a sequence. So I thought about doing it with the lever. That part, I admit, I winged it on.". Ruckus came in and said, "What have you done!?". "Oh hi, Jeff's uncle. How was your daughter wedding?" Trevor said. "I remembered that I don't have a daughter. So I took a nap. But what did you do!?". "We just saved half the down using the code you told us. No need to thank us." Pike said as Ruckus approached. "Not that. I'm talking about the fusion device. You took the lead casing off. I gotta get it out of here before the feds get here." Ruckus said as he tried to pick up the slushie machine. "Too late." someone said. Two suited men walked into the store with guns and said. "Mr. Ruckus, you're under arrest.". The two men grabbed Ruckus and the machine and walked outside, where a jail truck awaited outside. The three boys ran to them and Jeff asked, "What's going on? Why are you taking my uncle away?". "Your uncle has committed several serious crimes, including theft of nuclear equipment and improper toxic waste dumping.". "How long is he gonna be in jail?" Pike said. "Best guess, for life. Come on Jim, let's go". one of the agents said. "Wait, should we scan these kids in case they might be radiated." the other agent said. The one agent pulled out a scanner stick. He waved the scanner around them and the beeped a couple times. "They're fine." he said. They shoved Ruckus in the back of the truck, took the slushie machine and drove off. "I thought that I didn't have any cousins." Jeff said. "You know what, I think this is for the best. From the way you described it, it sounds like your uncle life was going downhill anyway." Pike said. "So, what gonna happen to the Greasy Bucket now?" Trevor asked. "I don't know. With Uncle Ruckus going to prison, I guess it'll just get torn down.". Just then, someone in a suit came up to the boys and said: "Hello boys. I am a representative from Beatrice gas company inc. Have you seen the owner of this establishment anywhere?". "Just missed him. He got carted off the jail." Pike said. "Oh, then do you know who might have received his property rights?". "Well, I am his nephew, so I guess they go to me then.". "Excellent. Then as the newfound owner, I would like you to relinquish the property for a set price.". "How much are we talking about?" Trevor said. The woman in the suit got out a checkbook and written something down on it. "Is this enough?" the woman asked as she handed Jeff the check. Jeff looked at the check and said: "50,000 dollars! You got a deal!". The businesswoman pulled out a contract along with a pen and said "Excellent. Just sign here.". Jeff signed the contract. The woman took the contract and said: "Pleasure doing business with you.", then walked away. "How awesome is this!? 50,000 dollars!" Jeff exclaimed. "Isn't your uncle gonna be angry when he gets out of jail and finds his gas station's been sold." Trevor said. "I don't think he's ever getting out. Stealing federal property is a pretty serious offense. This place was going down under anyway. Come on guys, let's hit the town!" Jeff said. They were about to walk off, but a man in a business swiped the check out of the boy's hand and said "Not so fast.". "Hey! Why are you taking my money?". "I'm afraid to tell you that my client is suing you for the ineptitude of your employees. Someone filled the exhaust with gasoline, causing my client's car to explode and wind up in the hospital.". Jeff looked at Trevor, who was sweating. "How much do we owe?" Pike said. "I believe this may be enough to cover my client's medical bills. Good day." the man said, then walked off with the check. "Trevor. What the heck, man." Jeff shouted. "Um..whoops.". "How could you mistake the exhaust with gas?" Pike said. "It's a common mistake. I'm sure anybody could have made it." Trevor said. "Many people know that the gas tank usually isn't in the back of the car, but on the side." Jeff said. "Gimme a break. I've never seen anyone pump gas before. I've never paid attention when my limo driver stops for gas.". Jeff sighed and sat on the curb, looking depressed. Trevor and Pike sat next to him and Trevor said: "Hey don't feel too bad. Money comes and goes.". "Yeah, Jeff. You're lucky that's all that lawyer took." Pike said. "That was 50,000 dollars. What more could he have taken?" Jeff asked. "Oh, I don't know.
