BPP, it's good to see you back. I have missed you and your insights.

I have been Stan twitter for a while and I have always noticed how the so called fans treat Jimin. At first I assumed it was because of shipping business but I have since come to realise it's so much more that that. I have seen Taekookers hate on him, but I have also seen most of the members if not all of the members solo stan hating on him. I have also noticed other fandoms targetting him. I fail to see why. I have been watching BTS religiously and he comes across the most sorted one in the group to me. He comes across as someone who is fully aware of who he is as a person. I find him the most genuine one in the group. That's not to say I find the others fake but there is something about him. Even now, I have come from twitter and he is being hated on for just existing. What is this all about? I have been to their concert and honestly at the concerts, he gets the loudest cheers, like much louder than the rest of the members so it really confuses me. Is it like a trendy thing to do or do people actually dislike him that much? I have noticed that his content views are lower too even though he seems to be one that everyone seems to talk about. I find myself really confused with the whole thing.

My very first 'post' on this blog was about hate. I've dug it up and reposted it here just so I can reference it for your ask. It's really long, but please take the time to read it because the meat of what I want to say is in that post (in the second section). I'll say a couple more things specific to Jimin since that's why you're here, but if you’re interested, you can send a follow up ask or DM me for some general examples that I hope show the wider context, beyond BTS.

I want to say I sincerely think that contrary to popular belief, Jimin doesn't get that much hate compared to other members. The hate he gets is a bit peculiar in how vulgar and graphic it is and I think there's factors driving that. Perhaps he gets the most of it, but I don't think some other members are so far behind. Not that this is a competition, but I think there's this perception that Jimin is hated everywhere by a massive wide margin compared to the rest of BTS (or others in k-pop for that matter), when instead it's possible the group as a whole is hated and anybody deemed to be the face of the group, is persona non grata. And if his abs reveal during debut era didn't immortalize him as a face of Bangtan, he certainly accomplished it with Blood, Sweat & Tears in 2016. BTS would be nothing without any of the members, especially Jimin, so if you want to come at BTS, you come at Jimin.

Let's also get the obvious out of the way: a lot of people don't need a reason to hate. Some people genuinely enjoy hating other people, especially hating someone who is loved by a huge amount of people. And it's no secret that even in 2022, people are homophobic, racist, and generally disgusting towards other people at the slightest provocation - and this is where Jimin's perceived gender presentation and orientation, perhaps influences (or compounds) the hate directed at him - he could be perceived by the lowest sort of people, to be some kind of acceptable target.

Jimin is a man who to many people, looks like a woman. He is objectively drop dead gorgeous and sometimes cute. But the flip side is a lot of the hate directed at him is misogynistic in tone, and nasty in the way only the violating sort of hate directed towards women is nasty. I've noticed a similar thing with hate directed at Yoongi as well.

Another big reason is that k-pop is extremely and dysfunctionally competitive. Participants in k-pop spaces take the worst of internet culture and weaponize that against any perceived threats. They will use racist, sexist, disgusting and dehumanizing language at the slightest opportunity, as soon as they pick a target or identify a threat.

Now, I've not said this anywhere before, but I think the most threatening person in k-pop is Park Jimin.

Well, yeah.

I won't get into the 'all of k-pop' comparison in this post, but within BTS, if you're watching a BTS performance and anything impressively acrobatic or virtuosic is happening, chances are Jimin is the reason. His vocals are stratosphere high - one would be lying if they said they cannot hear Jimin on a track he's on. If he sings, you will hear him, you will know it is him, and you will react to his voice. That's what his voice is designed to do. Whether that reaction is positive or negative is irrelevant imo, what matters is that his voice causes people to instinctively react. Spend anytime watching him and if his wit doesn't get your attention, it's likely his eye-smile, laugh or good manners hiding a sardonic sense of humour is what eventually does it. Or so I've been told (lol). It's impossible to not notice him. Anon, around the time I got your ask, I received another ask wondering why Jimin stands out not just in BTS but in k-pop. All the above are reasons why, and these reasons are identical to those for why people hate Jimin. I said before BTS would be nowhere without him. The thing is everybody knows it, **especially** many people who hate him.

This is a summary of how many solo stans (and some ARMYs) perceive his conflicts with their goals/faves in BTS:

Namjoon - General popularity vs perceived contribution to discography

Seokjin - Vocals, Visual

Yoongi - General popularity vs perceived contribution to discography

Hoseok - Dance, "most caring member"

Taehyung - Vocals, Dance, Visual

Jungkook - Vocals, Dance, Visual

Any discrepancies with views could be due to algorithms discounting his views (he trends too easily), or due to solo stans and their diet versions. K-pop is competitive and there's no referee - this is unavoidable context for anything that happens in this space.

The short answer to the question of why so many hate him, is that Jimin is special. In my humble opinion. He's special to his team, to most everyone around him, he is special compared to the general male population in- and out-side Korea, he is special in every way.

Anon, I rambled a lot in this post, but I think it's important to remember that Jimin seems to be fairly insulated from all of this. It's easy to get sucked in to fandom and think the reality here aligns with the one out there, but that's not necessarily true. In the real world Jimin of BTS is a respected virtuoso and master of his craft, he laughs with his friends and drinks with Jungkook et al, he gives to his old/former school and invests in real estate, he travels the world and makes music with pretty dope (and now viral) music producers and works hard on his solo debut album. He comes online occasionally to laugh with ARMYs. He said recently that he's happy. I say let's celebrate that and him more, rather than worry or wonder about why losers are the way they are.

Hi, hello, how are you. I love your writing and I love choices and I think you’re really cool. So the one scene when they give Reg veritaserum and then Sirius starts asking him all these questions and Regulus says he’s drowning… I was just curious why there isn’t any follow up to that? Reg just walked out and Sirius didn’t try to reach out to him after and talk about it. I know James mentions it the next day and it doesn’t go well with Regulus, so is that why Sirius doesn’t make an attempt? Because he knows Reg will refuse to talk about it? Or is there some other reason you didn’t pursue that? (Thank you)

So they do actually talk about it. Sirius doesn't specifically search Regulus out because I don't think he knows how (he says it's because it never felt like the right time but the truth is he's scared). I've said this before but Sirius kind of builds these narratives around Regulus to protect himself from how much it hurt to have Regulus abandon him - because I do think Sirius feels just as abandoned by Regulus as Regulus feels abandoned by Sirius. And I think he is very hesitant to reconstruct those narratives because, again, they protect him (we see him struggling with this when Remus comes to him in the shack in chapter 35). But they do talk about it, Chapter 30, right at the end:

He looks so small,

says the annoying voice in Sirius's head.

He looks so lost.

“You said you felt like you were drowning,” the words come out of him before he’s even really decided to say them. They’ve been on his mind since the Veritaserum. He’d been meaning to find Regulus, to ask him about them, but it just somehow never felt like the right time.

“Not now—we’re not doing this now,” Regulus mutters. He’s still shaking from earlier and for a moment Sirius wonders if he’s crying, but when Regulus drops his hands his eyes are dry.

“I know what it’s like,” Sirius says, watching his brother warily, “to be alone in that house.”

Regulus shoots him a sharp look, the first since Mary left. “You weren’t alone. You had me.”

Sirius is surprised by the conviction in his brother’s voice. Surprised by how much he means that. “Did I?” Sirius asks, not even in an attempt to be confrontational but just…honest. “Because I don’t remember you ever being there Reg, not when it counted, not when I needed you.”

Silence.

Sirius sighs, running a hand through his hair. “Bella, that day, the last one, she wanted you to torture me, you remember?”

After a brief pause Regulus nods.

“Would you have? If dad hadn’t stepped in? Would you have done it?”

His brother is looking at him with his real face. Maybe that doesn’t make any sense, but it’s true. Most of the time when Sirius sees Regulus he’s walking around with this expression of distain that is far too similar to their mother’s. But here, now, he looks like Reg. Looks like the kid who used to follow Sirius everywhere, used to beg him to read stories and build snow forts. Who used to crawl into his bed at night when he was scared—not their parents bed, but his.

He’d always felt more like a parent than a brother to Regulus, maybe that’s why it hurt so much. That when things started to get bad, really bad, Regulus disappeared. He may not have chosen their parents, but he certainly didn’t choose Sirius either. Instead he’d gone and made himself as small and quiet as possible. As though hoping the world would simply overlook him. Never forcing him to make up his mind.

Eventually Regulus sighs, running a hand over his face before meeting Sirius’s stare.

“Yes.”

Sirius closes his eyes for a second. It hurts. But only a little. After all, it’s not as though he hadn’t been expecting it.

“See?” he says, opening his eyes again. “Alone.”

Regulus only looks away, back down at his knees, and Sirius realizes that he doesn’t even feel angry anymore, just…sad.

“Joyeux Noel Reg,” he says dryly, "J'espère que cette année tu apprendras à nager." He walks away before his brother’s silence can get too loud.

French words from the North of France (Nord et Nord-Pas-de-Calais)

I have no idea why, but today I have noticed more local words in my conversations with people - so here is a list of the words you would most likely hear in the Nord and not elsewhere, and/or that originated here. Many of them, however, are used in other regions or at least known to most people.

1. Dracher. Ex : Il va dracher toute la journée ! This means that it will rain heavily. Fun fact, in Scots, Dreich means wet, dull, gloomy, dreary, or any combination of these. Though it is likely there are no common roots (dracher certainly comes from draschen in Flamish), I love that the feeling you get from both words is somewhat similar. Miserable and wet weather.

2. Babache. Ex : Mais t'es babache ou quoi ? It means stupid, slow. It is not very insulting. It is more often used as an adjective.

3. Wassingue. Ex : C'est trempé, passe-moi la wassingue. A mop.

4. Braire. Ex : Arrête de braire ! To cry (loudly), as the primary meaning of the word is the sound made by donkeys.

5. Targniole. Ex : Arrête de braire ou tu vas te prendre une targniole ! A slap, to get brutally slapped in the face.

6. Je te dis quoi. Ex : Attend qu'il nous appelle puis on te dit quoi ! It can be literally translated as 'I tell you what', but here the what isn't asking for more information/expressing interrogation, it means 'what will happen/how things will go'. This is often the reason for quiprocos between nordistes and parisians.

7. Caboche. Ex : Mais t'as rien dans la caboche ? (Don't you have anything in the head?) Caboche alone means head (J'ai mal à la caboche). Having nothing in the caboche means you are not very bright.

8. Petit pain. Ex : Prends-moi deux petits pains à la boulangerie. It means pain au chocolat. An alternative that I have sometimes heard is petit pain au chocolat.

9. Carabistouilles. Ex : Elle ne raconte que des carabistouilles. It basically means that something is nonsense/harmless lies (bêtises, balivernes). My grandmother always says tarabistouilles and even though she may have invented it, I think it's very nice. In Ch'ti: carabistoulles.

10. Crayon de bois. Ex : Il me faut un crayon de bois pour le cours d'arts-plastiques. A pencil.

Now onto the words/expressions I have always used but didn't know they were specifically from the North:

11. Vingt(e). The number 20 but we pronounce the t. I have actually always felt not pronouncing the t made you sound less serious.

12. Être à pied de chaussettes. Ex : Dans cette maison, on est tous à pied de chaussettes. To wear only socks.

13. A toute Berzingue. Ex : Ce fou furieux roulait à toute berzingue. At full speed.

14. Décarocher. Ex : Le pauvre homme, il décaroche complètement. To lose one's mind. There is this idea of slowly losing grip on things, falling. It is often used in a humorous/emphatic way but the primary meaning remains too.

15. Nonoche. Ex : T'es complètement nonoche ou quoi ? Simpleton.

16. Si ça tombe. Ex : Si ça tombe il s'est perdu et ne nous trouvera pas. Maybe/perhaps/if things are like they could be/if anything. It really is hard to translate the connotation here. It comes from the expression "Si ça se trouve", which refers to a possibility or eventuality that is less likely to happen than 'maybe', and I would argue that the former is a bit more fatalist/serious (tomber is more brutal).

17. Tout partout. Ex : Il a fait tomber la farine, y'en a tout partout ! Everywhere; you are insisting on the fact it really is all everywhere.

18. A c't'heure. Ex : Y'a plus rien d'ouvert à c't'heure. At this time of the day, literally at this hour. More often used by older generations (40+) but not exclusively.

Quand on vient dans le Nord on braie 2 fois : quand on arrive et quand on repart !

Andy Warhol, Silkscreen of Botticelli's Renaissance painting The Birth of Venus, (c.1984)

(English Translation)

One of the only things I find incredibly compelling about this work is it’s medium. But a few other things should be taken into account when reviewing this work.

1– The subject; Warhol is mostly known for his soup cans and animals. I find this work to be particularly amusing; I visited Chicago, America for the Noel of 2019, and was exposed to a large traveling exhibit there of his work. I’m not so much a huge fan of his work, but I do find the way he strayed off from his normal style interesting.

2– Venus is an ancient Roman god of love and beauty. Botticelli’s Venus is a defined masterpiece by the art world— it is currently housed in the Uffizi Gallery, in Florence, one of the largest, most lovely collections of works in the world. Some people may argue on its meaning, but it’s broadly interpreted as Botticelli’s representation of the Neoplatonic idea of divine love, as so represented by Venus, in all nude.

L'une des seules choses que je trouve incroyablement convaincantes à propos de ce travail est son médium. Mais quelques autres éléments doivent être pris en compte lors de l'examen de ce travail.

1– Le sujet ; Warhol est surtout connu pour ses boîtes de soupe et ses animaux. Je trouve ce travail particulièrement amusant ; J'ai visité Chicago, en Amérique pour le Noël de 2019, et j'y ai été exposé à une grande exposition itinérante de son travail. Je ne suis pas tellement un grand fan de son travail, mais je trouve la façon dont il s'est éloigné de son style normal intéressante.

2– Vénus est un ancien dieu romain de l'amour et de la beauté. La Vénus de Botticelli est un chef-d'œuvre défini par le monde de l'art - elle est actuellement conservée à la Galerie des Offices, à Florence, l'une des plus grandes et des plus belles collections d'œuvres au monde. Certaines personnes peuvent discuter de sa signification, mais il est largement interprété comme la représentation de Botticelli de l'idée néoplatonicienne de l'amour divin, telle que représentée par Vénus, entièrement nue.

This concept is fascinating in regards to Warhol, as he was an outwardly gay artist in the (prominent) 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s art world.

I’d like to ponder on why he chose this specific work to reproduce; his own queerness was the subject of many of his works, such as The Chelsea Girls, a 1967 film he directed, or Torso, c. 1982, silkscreen print. He also has a few male penises depicted, such as Male Genitals, c. 1950s. Botticelli has hardly a depiction of queerness in his art, as his works (and most works of the Renaissance era) are for and based around the church. The sense of freedom present in Warhol’s art is something I have yet to seen completely captured by another artist; he did not care, and that is some thing of art itself.

2.1.9-L'inattendu

The opening of this chapter almost feels like the POV from the group with these giant men on these giant horses. We get a lot more numbers here and they're specific to the one. It also includes descriptions of their armour.

This chapter is a lot more clear than the previous one and conveys movement where the previous conveyed stillness. After got those more close up views of them that are basically close up shots we've down gone to a wide lens which follows them over the landscape. In doing so, Hugo says explicitely what he has just conveyed: “Il semblait que cette masse était devenue monstre et n'eût qu'une âme. Chaque escadron ondulait et se gonflait comme un anneau du polype.” I think this works very well to show how certain victory seems, how in control Napoleon feels that he is but also what he has inflicted on these men.

We get several more classical allusions in this chapter which have been present throughout the Waterloo sections, especially with regards to Napoleon. Although because of the revolutionary laws, several people have classical names, Enjolras is the principle other character that I can think of with these classical allusions.

And then this monster hits the "chemin creux d'Ohain" and it causes complete chaos for the horses. Nothing else that they've faced has but this does.

[L]a force acquise pour écraser les Anglais écrasa les Français, le ravin inexorable ne pouvait se rendre que comblé, cavaliers et chevaux y roulèrent pêle-mêle se broyant les uns sur les autres, ne faisant qu'une chair dans ce gouffre, et, quand cette fosse fut pleine d'hommes vivants, on marcha dessus et le reste passa.

This feels like the whole point of the book really. An imagine of society which is now crushing itself as it hits this inexorable ravine. If they'd known about it, they could have taken it slower and not crushed themselves but now that they have, the only way to go over it is literally using the bodies to fill it up. No wonder France as a whole is now losing.

And now we meet Hugo's god directly for the first time in this book. We had met many signs of God before and in the second chapter, we saw the chapel at Hougomont with Jesus but here we meet his God in a moment of power and learn a great deal in the process about how the magic system works.

[…] L'excessive pesanteur de cet homme dans la destinée humaine troublait l'équilibre. [...] Le moment était venu pour l'incorruptible équité suprême d'aviser. Probablement les principes et les éléments, d'où dépendent les gravitations régulières dans l'ordre moral comme dans l'ordre matériel, se plaignaient. Le sang qui fume, le trop-plein des cimetières, les mères en larmes, ce sont des plaidoyers redoutables. Il y a, quand la terre souffre d'une surcharge, de mystérieux gémissements de l'ombre, que l'abîme entend.

I feel like this ties into all the classical allusions that Hugo was making before, that Napoleon belonged to the age of classical heroes (and monsters) and not to the 19th C. This makes me wonder whether then the same can be said of Enjolras and Grantaire and Les Amis? Is this why their revolution doesn't succeed and can only be the inspiration for future ones?

Hypocrisy regarding translations.

“What aren’t you understand? For Lumen Publishing to PURCHASE the rights to translate the novels that means Square Enix allowed it, which means they wanted the translations. Once more, you cannot publish a translation unless you have the approval of the copyright holder.”

This doesn’t apply to the English version for some reason. Nor does it matter Nojima, the man who wrote the novellas, approves of the English version.

Nojima also said he wrote each story from the respective character’s perspective. I.e third person limited from Aerith in CoTLS:W. They are not objective statements from Nojima. Whatever let’s ignore this and continue to say he confirmed Cloud and Aerith lovers in multiple languages, except the English one that he supports. There isn’t much to say here, I mean...when the author himself supports this translation over all the others if pretty much makes “well it contradicts the German, French, and Spanish!” when here the author himself is approving the English version. Just...there’s no need to argue. Word of God has spoken. The English translation of the Novella is approved by the dude who actually WROTE the story.

The End of Everything

Sephiroth –the hero of Cloud’s youth, the man who took everything from him, and the foundation of the Jenova Reunion Theory. Cloud’s battle cannot end until he confronts the enemy of the Planet and settles things, man to man.

The Japanese, French, German, and English make no reference to Aerith specifically, but rather reference Sephiroth taking away many people/things from Cloud without any being more important than the other.

As a side note, it makes little sense for Cloud and Sephiroth’s final battle having to do with solely Aerith, considering he wanted to settle things with Sephiroth before Aerith was murdered.

Dark Horse did not remove “a reference to Aerith” because there was no reference solely to her.

Like the French version doesn’t have mistakes? Since we’re at it, let’s look at something the French translation did that is absent from the Japanese and English version.

While I’m still beating this dead horse let’s look at the French translation’s version of Cloud and Tifa’s love.

During his youth, Cloud was a young rebel who isolated himself from other children, because he wanted to believe that he was different. In his eyes, however, Tifa was a special person. It is in his memories that we discover this ephemeral romance.

Ephemeral of course means, fleeting. This has been used as canon proof by CA that Cloud’s feelings for Tifa were short-lived and fleeting. Here it states there was a short-lived romance.

This statement is contradicted in the same book, in the same language.

Let’s move on to the German version! Which...is pretty different.

Als Cloud klein war, wurde gleichaltrigen Kindern gemieden, Der einsame und ausgestoßene Cloud erschuf seine eigene Erklarung und glaubte, etwas ganz Besonderes zu sein. Fur ihn war aber Tifa damals sehr wichtig. In seiner Gedankenwelt wird deutlich, wie innig seine Emotionen damals fur sie waren.

When Cloud was little he was shunned by kids the same age. The lonely and outcast Cloud created his own explanation for it and believed to be something special. But Tifa was important to him back then. In the world inside his mind it become clear how deeply his feelings for her were.

In case your wondering, innig translates to “intimate” when doing a literal translation. The French says ephemeral, the German says intimate. You could say, “Well it doesn’t matter because it is in the past!” which brings me to the German translation of the highwind scene.

Scene: When Tifa is alone with Cloud on the night before the final battle and she doesn't know what she should tell him

For years Cloud and Tifa have fostered feelings for each other. Before the final battle against Sephiroth both can finally admit them.

The Japanese version:

2019 October Update

Woops, I slipped by my stated blog date since I thought September had 31 days for some reason. So here's the end of September update, 1 day late.

--------------------------

Writing... And more writing.

That captures the majority of what transpired the last 2 months. The biggest cutscenes have been scripted as well as most towns, so we're really close... I estimate that the writing will conclude within the next 3 *weeks* and we will actually have a game that can be played from start to finish... Don't get too excited though, because then begins the game's vigorous playtesting phase and more polish. And since I've never launched a commercial game before, the next steps (PR, marketing, lot checking, ESRP rating application, trailers recutting, release date finding, etc) are uncharted territory. The only experience I have is launching a flash game 5 years ago, and that was a lot quicker and a lot less complicated... And so, I can't gauge how long it'd take nor give an accurate release date yet. However, as soon as I do know, it'll be sure to post it here first!

--- COMPUTER BROKE DOWN ---

Among the events that transpired in the last 2 months, my computer actually broke down. It would manifest as the computer shutting off about 10 minutes after turn on. And this was really worrisome because if my computer croaked, it would be a huge blow to the game's development. The time it would take to restore the specific dev environment I had set up would be considerable...

Luckily, it was repaired after 4 days of intense troubleshooting. I'll spare you the long list of events that transpired, but eventually my brother and I were able to narrow the problem down to non-spinning fans on the graphics card. I was able to zippo-tie two chassis fans together, and insert them below the Gfx Card's heat sink. Much cheaper than replacing the whole graphics card!

--- MORE PLAYTESTING CHANGES ---

I'll discuss here some additional fixes/changes to the game based on my brother's previous playthrough (still going through that list, heh...)

F. Remember you can climb roots

I remember from a public demo I attempted (3 years ago?), that a lot of people got stuck at these roots, not realizing they could be climbed. Since then, we did a few things to ensure that the first encountered roots would be climbed. The roots' colors were brightened so they would stand out. A character, Ernest, comments that others have climbed the roots. And finally, standing in front of the roots will cause the "Press UP" tutorial prompt to appear.

So how did my brother fare when I did the playtest 2 months ago? He climbed the roots, thankfully. He climbed the next few sets as well. However, later on, in a dungeon, he forgot that climbable roots were a thing. Back to square one. So there's a lesson here... Even if you teach a player something, there's no guarantee that it'll stick.

So in the picture above, you can see my next attempt at an invisible hand to remind the player. In the red circle, notice there are 4 blue dots. These blue dots pulsate wherever there are climbable roots (They're a lot more visible in motion). The idea is to tie an unusual image to an action. I anticipate when the player sees 4 pulsating dots, they'll react by attempting a variety of actions, before eventually concluding that you can only climb them. And that this experience will be more memorable for it - to be conjured up whenever the player sees 4 blue dots. I look forward to observing what happens with the next blind playtester. (Btw, in reading this blog, you have disqualified yourself from playtesting :P)

G. Instant Food Eating

As stated in a previous blog post, the player can't eat from the menu. Food must be eaten in real-time. It's up to the player to find a safe spot to eat, away from interruptions. Some foods can be eaten more quickly, proving more valuable in a fight.

However, what about on the world map?

You can't use tools or items on the world map, which means no healing at all! I saw my brother opening the menu and tinkering around, confident that it could be done. Because why couldn't you?

Indeed... he didn't say anything, but I wrote it down as a feature to be added. And after adding it, found that eating from the menu was fun! After years of using the new system, to have the old flash system's implementation of healing again was refreshing.

And so I decided to add it as a possible new characteristic of food. There's now a special class of food, "candy", that actually can be used from the menu (world map or no). Rest assured, candy items will be balanced - costing more than regular food, and their healing effects will tend to be less than other more timely items.

H. Fishing Hud finally updated

This wasn't something discovered through playtesting, more of an unfinished task that sat around for far too long.

In the old fishing hud (perhaps an example of minimalism taken too far), the fish's health is represented by 10 white dots. In the new fishing hud, the fish's health lines up and mirrors the player's own stamina. Whoever outlasts the other wins!

I had actually been sitting on the finalized graphics for over a year. For some reason, the last 10% implementation of a feature tends to be the most boring. In game development, I find myself jumping around often, working on whatever can catch my interest. That's good for ensuring that the game's development is always moving forward in *some* capacity. But now at the tail end of development, only the most boring tasks are left...

--- WRITING ---

So I mentioned writing. One of the things written in the last 2 months was the entirety of the "monster" village's NPCs. This time I also roped in Pirate (formerly artist, now also writer), since she's quite familiar with their lore having drawn them and their town.

When I wrote trolls, I wanted to give them a unique speech, not unlike the Mr. Saturns from Earthbound. My idea was to capitalize all words and then strip away as many unnecessary words as I could, while keeping the meaning identical.

Pirate then took the result and improved upon it, establishing rules their language could follow to be consistent:

Simplified negatives (no instead of not/don’t/can’t/etc);

Object pronouns replace subject, possessive and reflexive pronouns (me/name instead of I/my/mine/myself).

No ‘be’ verb or it’s conjugations (am, is, are).

No verb conjugation.

No articles.

Another neat thing that happened naturally over the past two months was a construction of a "timeline". The timeline takes the form of a 2D chart, with the major players lined up on the left, and the years up top. There are new characters this time around, and having the timeline as a reference, helps to make sure the lore is on point.

Brickclub 1.1.1 - 2 + Introduction

Hello! I’m Alice she/her/hers, trying to catch up to brick club, not the sharpest pencil in the drawer, knows near nothing, so this’ll be something of a miscellaneous collection of rambles just for myself and hopefully it’ll work out!

Footnotes and app “common knowledge” say that the inspiration for M. Myriel is de Miollis, bishop of Digne from 1806 to 1838, emigrated to Rome during the revolution, anti-napoleon, bought back church land confiscated by the frev.

According to this article, which I cannot understand since it is in French, jvj was based on pierre Morin, released after 5 years in prison for stealing bread for his sister’s starving family, couldn’t find a job or shelter, was taken in by the aforementioned bishop and died in the battle of Waterloo - does this have anything to do w the pontmercy?

de miollis was born 19 june, 1753 instead of? 1815 - 75 = 1740? I couldn’t find anything remotely interesting that happened in 1740 except marquis de sade’s birth and hopefully that was an unfortunate coincidence.

he had 15 siblings, 7 of whom died young, 4 brothers, 4 sisters. of whom one brother took on the family business of conseiller, two (i think) were generals under napoleon - family dinners must’ve been difficult - and the last was a prefect. Hugo says Myriel had 2 brothers, a prefect and a general, which is close enough. de Moillis does not have a sister baptistine, but he does have a sister named anne magdeleine de moillis, married to a marquis, with a servant named genevieve. the article says perhaps hugo thought the name genevieve too noble for a servant, which i find silly bc magloire’s a perfectly lovely name. so i went in looking for his relationship with baptistine and felt terribly cheated to realize hugo had fabricated the sister almost entirely which i suppose is fair.

I think the article says that de Moillis was given the position bc his brother was a general under napoleon. and that the hospital thing fabricated as well but! i’m sloth and articles are so entirely dull.

A 17th century precursor to Mgr Myriel

This article posits that the creation M. Myriel was influenced by Lancelot’s 17th century novel relation d'un voyage d'aleth which sounds terribly interesting and i must look into it aaaand i’m terribly off topic

SO ANYHOW:

Myriel emigrated to Italy just as the revolution began and when Napoleon left Italy for France, one by fortune and the other by choice. And he said he was a good man while Napoleon was a great man - I promised myself I’d get throw the next book to call Napoleon a great man at the wall, but alas, I’m reading this digitally - so they’re somewhat opposites!

Myriel was in an arranged marriage and indulged in affairs, which his later parishioners v consciously forgot, which? I suppose? Shows his love for them is more unconditional than theirs for him? And could? Well? Parallel how ppl were so reluctant to look into the past of Madeleine and how easily they forsook poor jvj as soon as the v ancient news reemerged

Young myriel sounds like such a riot! A bit like? Courfeyrac aka the nicer tholomyès aw imagine if he were cosette’s father instead? I’m sure he wouldn’t abandon her Oh no I’m off topic but I suppose Hugo here’s either saying? Affairs aren’t virtuous and so ppl are capable of change - which would be hypocritical of him - or affairs are ok as long as you take responsibility and such which? i suppose I can get behind. Of course, with the ease of getting divorces nowadays, hopefully people wouldn’t stay in loveless arranged marriages. I remember, when I first read the book, being rather discomfited by the way Myriel seems to ignore how his actions affect women who depend on him? Such as the voluntary scarcity he not only devoted himself to but also foisted upon his sister and sweet Magloire. And? now the way he cheated on his wife, who probably wished no part in this relationship either, but has less freedom than he does in this marriage but ah now I’m terribly off topic and bumming myself out.

I wish there were more said on the 30 years they were married, on their exile to italy, i want to know it all! “Nobody knows” says the omniscient narrator oh come on Hugo spill the beans on myriel! I am the brainless gossiping mob tell me everything

I love magloire and baptistine’s descriptions I love them both! Hugo says a lady needs to be a mother to be venerable but i think that’s just you Hugo you have this odd thing for feral saintly mothers and who can blame you. Mlle. baps is an aspiration! mme. Magloire too! She’s so hard working despite being ill, and it just isn’t right she should be the only one to be so busy when she has asthma

Onto chapter 2! So um I know this is terribly off topic, but nap the bonbon said that an archbishop would have a stipend of 15000 francs while a bishop would be given 10000 francs, and this book published after les mis still cited the same numbers as well so it’s odd that Myriel has an annual stipend of 15000 francs? AHHh also! bonbon said that rectors - one class of them at least - would be paid 1500 francs annually, and i’m not entirely sure, but isn’t a curé a rector? as hugo said, myriel never really took more money than he needed. BUT he allocated 1000 francs instead of 1500 for his personal stipend and so I’m! very! confused! i feel like i’m v earnestly explaining how a triangle has four sides. i swear i’ll move on.

(adding on oh god i just realized?? baps gets 500 a year? i really hope myriel isn’t counting her pension as part of his own personal expenses... though itt does say that “Avec ces quinze cents francs, ces deux vieilles femmes et ce vieillard vivaient.” but that would be rather despicable)

I love the part where he converts the palace to a hospital! hugo started off by describing the extravagance and grandeur of it all, and then juxtaposing it to? the hospital and myriel’s decision to swap houses and there’s something terribly satisfying about the layout. just. how it ends with “Il y a erreur, je vous dis. Vous avez mon logis, et j'ai le vôtre. Rendez-moi ma maison. C'est ici chez vous.” it all wraps so nicely!

The book reiterates how Myriel’s family was ruined by the frev - to what extent, for both of his brothers are employed by the napoleonic government. To that end, it almost appears as a sort of denouncement of violent social change. However, that isn’t quite what myriel believes, it seems, at least according to his budget? since he allocates more to the People as opposed to family, so i’m very confused. Perhaps Hugo is saying that the sacrifices of a few good men who benefit from an unjust system is necessary.

Myriel took the transportation fee! it was hilarious. of course, i do have mixed feelings because M. Préameneau was right, it’s ridiculous for someone in such a small parish to apply for a carriage fee, which was at least partially why Myriel ultimately chose the donkey. and i’m supposing this most likely sets a terrible precedent for the next bishop of digne who might not have similar philanthropist sentiments. so Hugo’s saying we’re allowed to take advantage of a broken system as long as our own ends are good? how machiavellian! and the buildup was hilarious even if we all knew myriel would never pocket the money himself. poor Mme. Magloire though, it sounded like the household really could have used the money. I think the way she said? that he began by being kind with other people, and now he will end with us? it’s almost rather tragic. that he should’ve neglected the feelings of the people closest to him.

Hugo seems to have? Baps represent the spirit and Magloire the body, or at least more worldly worries, which seems rather classist of him . I suppose it might be a necessary evil of liking symbols so much - you inevitably fall into stereotypes - and i do love them both, but it makes me uncomfortable.

DM #13 traces

Distant Movements #13 a eu lieu vendredi 17 janvier à 10h45. Après quelques mois sans expérimentations pratiques, cette 13ème expérience est la première qui, à la fois, accueille des invités, et se joue en présence d'un public.

Contexte : Muriel Piqué était invitée par Alix Demorant, chercheuse, à présenter sa recherche-création doctorale *dans le cadre de la journée d'atelier« Recherche en création, Recherches transdisciplinaires en poïétique : méthodologies, enjeux et savoirs inhérents aux processus créatifs», portée par l'unité de recherche Rirra 21, à Montpellier. Nos invités sont Alice Lenay et Guilhermo… Dans la salle 102 du Site Saint Charles de l'Université Paul-Valéry, à Montpellier se trouvent les participants à cette journée d'atelier, dont Guilhermo et Muriel. Daniel, Annie et Alice sont chez eux, respectivement, à Porto, Montpellier et Paris.

Extrait de l'introduction en direct : « Nous allons vivre une expérience ensemble, de mouvements à distance, de création de mouvements à distance, peut-être d'invention de mouvements ensemble, peut-être même d'invention d'une danse ensemble pendant 15 minutes... » Le réveil est lancé ! Les premiers mots d'Annie seront : « on ferme les yeux... » Après quoi le corps, ses sensations, l'écoute de soi et des autres ont commencé à nourrir la guidance. De nouveaux possibles ont pris forme, en même temps que des impossibles sont apparus.

A la fin de cette expérimentation en public, la salle a posé quelques questions, en voici quelques unes rapportées : Questions : Avez-vous toujours les jeux fermés? Est-ce que vous gardez les traces ? Est-ce important de pouvoir les regarder après ? Réponses en vidéo:

Question : Est-ce l’outil numérique est une façon de retrouver ce qui s’est perdu dans la relation à l’autre (une compensation pour la désincarnation ?) ou est-ce que vous le voyez comme une nouvelle manière de vivre ensemble ? Nos trois réponses se croisent et complètent peut-être : Muriel : Je vois que dans le monde de la danse on cherche à trouver une nouvelle relation avec le public et je considère que le numérique pose des conditions nouvelles. Daniel : For me the internet became a site-specifique venue for which I create performances and experiences. I develop these new choreographies and theories based on classical methodologies for movement. Annie : C’est une recherche artistique qui prend en compte son corps devant l’écran et pose la question des spécificités des relations qu’on peut entretenir avec les autres via les machines.

Par la suite, nous nous sommes écrits, pour échanger nos sensations, nos perceptions, nos sentiments sur ce que nous venions de traverser : Annie a écrit : Pendant : pas très en confiance. Deux raisons : 1. pas assez de préparation ensemble pour se mettre “en place”, pas de reconnaissance de l'outil avec les invitées, pas de "pose de l'ensemble” en amont. 2. mon attention était trop double ? l'attention à l'intérieur au corps perturbé par le regard invisible des autres ? trop en train de faire pour eux ? Nous n’avions pas assez pensé cette contrainte en amont. Suite à cela je propose qu’on appelle pour l'instant chaque présentation devant un public une "démo" et ne pas “expérience” et encore moins une “performance”. Ce serait bien de toujours commencer une session avec une préparation, une "mise en état de pouvoir ...". Ps Je lis actuellement “Pensée en acte”/”Thought in the Act” d’Erin Manning et Brian Massumi. Ce qu’ils appellent “techniques de relation” et “contraintes encapacitantes” sont des concepts à creuser ?

Daniel : It's not as if we're resorting to complicated methods of connecting (like satellite for instance) but we're relying on the networked infrastructure which frames our common ways of communication and thus it is another mode of setting an environment to practice movement which becomes complete after the archival/documentation of the event takes place. Distant Movements is something (which we create) within a specific environment - through the Internet - and which sets the conditions for how we move. Interestingly enough the video documentation shows moments of entanglement between us (either by direct instructions and other less direct - can you touch me?! - which would then transform the group movement into one made of different qualities but in sync or at least connected with each other). It shows how the connection bounces and balances back and forward between us all... Is it the same as if sharing the same physical space? Are we conditioned by sharing the same interests and that's why and how we connect online?

Muriel : J'ai retrouvé le chemin de vos guidances. Ce qui pourrait signifier que les guidances ou invitations au mouvement sont très personnelles, singulières, propres à chacun, et témoignent de notre organisation mentale, corporelle, sensible... J'ai retrouvé un état de conscience de mes sensations et simultanément mon imaginaire de vous en mouvement. J'ai retrouvé votre voix et votre silence. J'ai découvert le "je", me semble-t-il pour la 1ère fois dans DM. J'ai découvert que je n'avais pas besoin de chercher à vous toucher pour vous sentir avec moi. Le silence me parait s'être approfondi. La guidance en elle-même m'a semblé "progresser" vers plus de fluidité. plus d'écoute aussi. et des silences plus longs... Well I could pass for a lot of nationalities in Europe but so far that never happens to me haha (except maybe for one time in Iceland the cashier thought we were Swedish cuz he recognised our host university sweaters)

I’m going to Italy in February, so that’s one off my bucket list…But tbh I’d like to visit them all ( I just LIVE for travelling and learning new cultures man)

HAHAHAHA OMG I think France is always represented as super Fancy, and oh. The Paris thing. don’t get me sarted on this. Apparently, France is reduced to a single city when it comes to American/foreign media X)
